I hate it when I try to call Dr's offices or insurance companies - I know that none of your 'options' will work for me, and I just want to talk to a real person, NOW.

The ones I really hate are the automated systems you can 'talk' to. It never works. Normally when I get those, I just punch buttons on my phone randomly until the machine decides I'm an idiot and transfers me. smile

From what Ive heard from others, I dont think that would be true, but it does lead me to ask something- would having a hunter spec'd out for melee be a 'gimpy' build, or at least an ineffective one?
Yes, a melee hunter is generally considered to be a "gimp" build, mainly because a Ranged hunter is several orders of magnitude more powerful.

Agreed. I have a two handed sword that via raw DPS (the weapon only) is more powerful than my bow. Yet I do an absolute TON more damage thanks to all of my ranged spells/powers/talents.

A melee speced Hunter is a total gimp. Go either full (31 points or more) Marksmanship or Beast Mastery, and put the rest into the other tree.

As for out meleeing a Rogue in combat, not a chance. Once again it's the lack of spells/powers/talents.

Overall, a Rogue is a very powerful class. They can't take much damage, but oh man can they put it out. As long as they have a Paladin healing them (not a Priest, as they tend to get squished if they gain aggro that the Rogue can't pull off), they're nearly unstoppable. Rogues also have the ability to actually do noticable damage to a +3 or higher mob, something which most other classes can't even dream about.

The site linked above has a mod you can download that in a nutshell does a /who command for every level range for the entire world (but only for your side).

Then it takes that data and uploads it to the site. Simple as that, more or less.

Here's another one: Parenting Licenses.  If you want to have children, you have to pass a test, including a realistic hands-on internship in raising kids.  You are observed continually by an independent panel of judges who determine your fitness to have kids before you bring the little buggers into the world, screw them up, and create a drain on society.

With a realistic limit to the number of kids you can both support and care for!  It seems that often the least parentally and economically equipped people have the most children, and that is a shame.  I always feel bad for those kids.

After seeing how many people come into my pharmacy with state paid for insurance, most of the time with 4+ kids, I just want to stop paying my taxes. It's terrible to say, EngineNo9, but your statement is completely true - the people with the money and the ability to raise great kids never have them.

Yet all the losers have half a dozen.

Why is that?

Nothing quite like visiting Thottbot.com, punching in your quest name, and getting all the information you'd ever need to finish the quest (quest start, end, and all goals hyperlinked with maps showing where the item/mob spawns/drops/etc) right at your fingertips.

Why online sites are always far superior to a book.

However, it is a nice hint book, I do have to say.

Has anyone else seen the previews (by EA) of what they say is their next generation (Xbox 2 and Playstation 3) football game?
Also I think in PSM - they said the next playstation will make games look incredibly realistic, it will blow everything away.

From what I read, these shots have been proven to be doctored or 'drawn based on possibilities' and nothing more.

What will the next gen games look like? Personally, you won't see a giant increase in graphics at all.

Why? Take a game that looks the absolute best in your mind. What can be done to that to make it look better?

More polygons? The average person is still using a normal TV set, limited to 320x240 resolution. They won't see it.

Farther draw distance/no more fog? Whoopie.

Bigger/better textures all the time? See above.

Better framerate? Personally, I see all next-gen games being locked at 60fps all the time.

Anti-Aliasing? The low resolution and very high dot pitch of your TV set makes this nearly pointless. It'll be done, but you'll only see the effect on games that don't do it.

The main reason that PCs will look so much better (for the devs who do the hard work, anyway), is the resolution of your monitor. Your average game is played at 1024x768 or higher resolution.

Your TV set? 320x240 is what it truly displays at. At Progressive Scan (480p), your TV set is now 320x480.

720i is 720x480 resolution and 1080i is 1080x480.

But, who really owns a 720i or 1080i TV set? A very, very, small number of people. Yeah, quite a few games will support this resolution next generation (if I had to make a guess), but how many people will actually see it?

There's your food for thought. Please correct me if I'm wrong on some of the technical details though.

I use Cosmos and a few from Telo's mod.

From Cosmos:
Sidebar (gotta have the 12 buttons it gives you)
Bottombar (the one that adds on a huge choice of bars on the right bottom side, and can hide the ones you don't use - I use it for another 1x10 set of buttons)
Clock (gotta have that EXP per hour among other things)
Whatever mod that makes the quests scroll quickly and gives you a level estimate of them

From Telo:
LootLink (gives you a giant searchable database of items you learn as you click on people/use the auction - I have nearly 6000 items now in my list)
MobHealth (gives an estimation of how much HP a mob has left in numberical format, learns as it goes)

It's sad how many buttons I need as a Hunter, but I really need ~30 buttons easily accessable at all times without switching button bars.

Most popular realm: Bleeding Hollow (11,696 players)
Alliance Players: 194,800
Horde Players: 114,227

Dwarf: 33,799
Tauren: 29,726
Orc: 24,514
Troll: 22,777

You know, I don't get it - the Mages are arguably broken and Warriors are in desperate need of more love. So why does everybody play them? And the Shaman are arguably overpowered (like Pallys), but nobody plays them.

They do that with the mobs so you can't train them and screw/MK someone.

Exactly - Blizzard themselves said they designed the aggro system like that on purpose.

For example - if you train Stitches all the way to Goldshire, he'll attack everybody who's on his aggro list. Once his list is cleaned up (he kills all the PCs who have ever attacked him), he'll go back to what he was doing - which in this case is rampaging back to his zone.

Short of any AoE effects a mob might have, you'll be completely safe from any high level mob who gets trained in your direction if you don't attack. I for one like it.

I just have never seen a mainstream MMORPG be down for so long.  I'm not sure why they didn't test the patch out before they put it on the live servers because it was an obvious problem almost immediately.  Oh well, my son and I opened our copy of WoW a week early so we could get get our fix in smile

Guys, in my experience with Verant on EQ, they NEVER tested ANYTHING that went onto the Test Server. Period. People on Test could /bug something every single day they tested the game, and Verant wouldn't touch a single thing.

So, when patch day came out, all the testers would be there, saying, "We TOLD Verant CONSTANTLY this was broken, and they didn't listen to us."

After reading this constantly, almost every single patch, I gave up on them for good. Why I'm a happy WoW player right now. biggrin

And as far as the harvesting goes in WoW - it's an issue where the server knows that there is no node there, but your PC somehow thinks there is. /bug it and find another node to mine, and you're fixed. Or just log out/in and you're okay.

Are any other MMORPG games out there, specifically WoW or EQII, even having any sort of "Holiday Themed" things in their games?  Maybe anyone can post some of their holiday pictures in this thread and I'll appropriately title it, "Merry Christmas from __, __, __, FFXI, etc."

Yeah, I shouldn't have been the bitter jerk that I was going at FFXI like I did.

On the other hand, Square tends to be one of the very few companies that believes in celebrating the holidays. Halloween, Christmas, 4th of July (although I think that's more based on the server launch date than anything else), stuff like that.

The best you'll see in EQ is a series of quests/mobs that bring out the worst in people. FFXI does things that liven up the place. It's very different, compared to the rest of the games.

Go break out another image grabbing program (as the shoddy one included with FFXI only takes shots at 640x480 for reasons I never understood), and post some shots. I'd love to see more of it.

15064  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW - The Hunter Class on: December 17, 2004, 06:57:40 PM
As far as I'm concerned, my pet can hold aggro better than any tank. Unlike warriors, taunt isn't broken, require much in the way of rage, or anything else (sorry Warriors).

Once aggro filters onto my pet (one Taunt and one Claw later), it takes nearly an act of God on my part to get aggro back.

And what does a Hunter bring into a group? An amazing aggro getter that doesn't require much in the way of healing. My pet regenerates at almost double to triple the speed of a similar level PC, requires no food or water to regain HP/Mana, and is capable of doing quite a bit of damage.

The Hunter is also able to tank decently (I can easily pull two at once by letting one beat on me while I fill the other full of arrows), I can split pulls (freeze Trap works wonders for 10 to 20 seconds depending on level), I can slow adds (Concussion Shot/Wing Clip), and I can easily steal aggro from any fragile Mage/Cleric who's gotten it.

However, the true power of the class is based on the person at the PC. I do admit - the pet is dumb. He'll follow a fleeing mob to his death, never change targets unless you tell him to, and his pathfinding is limited to what the mobs use (which generally sucks). If the Hunter is capable of watching over the entire battle, and controlling the situation, he's a fantastic class.

Just my 2 copper.

I see Hunters plowing through mobs 3 levels about them.  Pet tanks and never loses aggro...

Yikes.  That's bad.  Maybe cutting damage back a bit and updating the pet's taunt would fix it.

And here's the whole issue about the Hunter - if the pet is unable to hold aggro, the Hunter is utterly useless, as the class is all about ranged attacks.

And later on in life, attacking +3 mobs isn't the wisest of choices. At 32, yes, I can take on 35 mobs, but my pet takes a ton of damage (almost needing a heal to keep standing), and I waste a lot of arrows as I keep missing. I can cut through +1 and below mobs like a hot knife through butter, and I can take on +2 mobs with relative ease (but still missing nearly half my shots). And I can take on multiple +1 and +2 mobs without too much trouble.

Balancing the Hunter is gonna be tough. Remove the pet's ability to hold aggro and you break the class. Period. Mess with damage too much in general, and the class is broken.

Well, I got frustrated with some CS issues and major bugs with EQ2 and have caved into the darkside.  I have a hunter who is now lvl 19.  My best solo moment so far was taking on a lvl 21 elite mob and winning to finish off a quest.  I am very impressed with the hunter so far... I am going heavily into beast mastery talents, so far I have increased my pets HP by 10% and thier focus by 20%.  Next I intend on upping thier damage.  It may not be the most effective build but I am loving it.

The general concensus is that there's two ways to 'properly' 'build' your Hunter - either go Beast Mastery or whatever the spec is that has all the Ranged powers in it. Your pet is very powerful, as is your bow. Improving one or the other makes you that much more stronger in the end.

And Biyobi - LOL. Sorry, I was just trying to find some comparison, and that's the first thing that came to mind. Oddly enough, I was thinking of using a dagger on my Pally just to hold taunt better, but then I realized they couldn't use the weapon.

As far as nerfing goes... There's some saying that the Hunter is balanced as far as power goes. Remember this - you need to feed/level your pet, which takes time and inventory space. Your main method of attack (the bow) requires ammo, which starts to get expensive at the higher levels (42 silver to fill my 14 slot quiver with level 30 arrows). So, in a sense, they are balanced with the amount of power they have.

We'll see what Blizzard does. All I know is this - the Hunter is the most popular class, based on everything I've seen so far. That alone means something.

And yet, the most graphically advanced console with the best online play was soundly defeated by the PS2 this generation.  I think Iwata's right.  Also, it's not as if Nintendo is not pushing graphically forward, albeit slowly.  The GBA had SNES-era graphics, the DS is N64-era.  The PSP reflects the current generation, but it also has a 90 - 360 minute battery life.  The design decisions for the new handhelds have both positive and negative points, but after seeing how well the DS is selling, I'm not worried for Nintendo.

Also, remember this - the GB (yes, the old black and green brick) beat out FAR more powerful handhelds (the Game Gear, the Atari Lynx, the portable TG-16, etc).

Why? It's the games and the console itself.

The GB ran forever on four AAs. The GG and the Lynx sucked on them like water.

The GB had Tetris, Mario, etc. The others, well, while the GG had some good stuff, the Lynx was limited in the software area.

My attitiude towards games are the following - fantastic graphics are a bonus, not mandatory. It's the gameplay that counts in the end. Period.

.

A hunter with a melee emphasis would be different from the 90% of us Hunters who are just pouring all their talent points into Marksmanship.   Tongue

No offense, but making a Hunter who goes Melee is like making a Warrior who uses a dagger as his main weapon. Yes, it can be done, but your class isn't designed to work that way.

The Hunter is designed to have just enough Melee power to get into combat and survive it. He can off-tank something while shooting arrows at the primary target for a while, but he's not meant to get down and dirty in melee combat.

Case in point - at level 31, I have two 18 DPS melee axes (bonuses to Agi on both for my ranged skills). In comparison, I have a 16 DPS bow (Harpy Bow or something). Even with my pet tanking all the time (so the mob can't dodge/parry my blows), I can kill a mob far faster with my bow than I can melee.

Why? All my damaging powers are ranged based.

I'm not telling you how to play your game though, so if you want to be a melee Hunter, go right ahead. I'm just saying that they make a far better ranged class. That's why they have a pet that can tank.

Hunter by far, from my experience. Why?

You know how most people say to grind on -1 and -2 mobs for lots of experience with no downtime? I can grind on same, +1, and +2 mobs with no downtime. My cat and I absolutely slaughter the opposition.

Getting a group slows me down. Just find an empty spot (easier on the quieter servers and if you visit the out of the way places), and go nuts. Bonus points if you find quests associated with what you're killing, too.

The only thing that stops me are my loot bags either filling up, or I run out of arrows (after about two hours of non-stop killing at level 31).

My 'best' series of kills was taking on four mobs, one after another (so I was either in a solo or duo fight constantly), without stopping (adds throughout the whole fight), and without either my pet or I getting killed. It took everything I had to do it, but I did it.

Show me another class that can take on 4 mobs without even a second's break between battles (the same level as you, too), and get away with a victory.

So... raptors, where and how?  If I was a troll hunter, it'd be easy, but as a NE, I don't want to wait so long ;-).  Then again, my snow leopard does look really nice.

You'll have to pay a visit to The Barrens to grab a younger Raptor. It's linked off the Night Elf Territory, but you'll have to travel through a relatively safe (following the roads and with a map) 20-30 zone to get to it.

Personally, I'll be sticking with a cat in some shape or form. 1.3 attack speed (yes, 1.3 seconds per attack instead of the more common 2.0), can learn all four currently available skills, has about as much HP as I do at 30 (950ish HP), and eats just about anything.

Why do you want a 1.3 second pet? Casters. While your pet still has the same DPS overall, attacking that quickly utterly kills casters. I've taken down a level 28 Werewolf something (a caster) taking absolutely no damage at 29, as it dared to cast a spell. Between my 1.3 second cat and my 1.5 second (after quiver bonus) bow, he couldn't get a single spell off before he dropped dead. biggrin

I had fun yesterday hanging around the Crossroads with my 29 Night Elf Hunter sniping the NPCs buried inside the town, just trying to see if I could get a PC to come out and play.

After about 45 minutes, seeing nothing but the occasional low level (highest was a lone 25 Warrior), I gave up and wandered back to questing.

And left a pile of dead NPC bodies in my wake. biggrin

Thottbot - the best site (IMHO) for finding just about anything. Want to see maps overlayed with specific mobs or mining spots? It's there. smile

Anyone know of any good websites that have detailed skill breakdowns for priests?  I use Thottbot a lot, but honestly there are a lot of holes in it's data (at least for priests).

Thottbot has holes in it? Since when? They're the most informative site I've seen as far as WoW goes, period.

The only holes I've seen are some exact percentages in Talents, and that's it.

As for any other sites... The only one I can think of is Alkazham, but I have no idea how to actually spell it to provide you a link.
