I remeber GG forum, and there would be few posts every few minutes, with great range of topics. Right now this forum seems almost extinct.

It gets like that on the weekends.  Apparently a lot of our readership are slackers and post from work during the week.  Or maybe they have lives.

Yes, I've come to notice this - most of our readership are slackers at work bored out of their minds. biggrin

And, dtb, where do you find those things?

I like EB, but that's probably because most of the workers know me and won't push me on things they know I won't buy.  So, any of you guys seen this $3 insurance offered or am I the lone one here?

My local EB here in AZ started doing the same thing as well. As I've worked at EB for a few months (but years ago), I know just how poorly people take care of their games. It's like they rub them into the carpet or something.

But, yes, more often than not it'll be more pure profit for EB. That and their extended warrenty service on consoles other than the PS2. smile

Yep and they are sifting the logs of that site.  Anyone else feel the hand of violation up the skirt of civil liberties?  Oh wait, we gave those away didn't we....

Just think of all the e-mails that'll be sent out to many, many, many high-speed internet subscribers over the next month or so because of this.

Why try to actually track down people who've downloaded stuff, when you can 'acquire' one of the larger torrent tracking sites and just dig through their server logs?

The saddest thing about the modern EQ is the fact that lower-level zones and/or Antonica zones are almost completely unpopulated.  When I played the game most recently, (from right before the release of LDON to right after the release of GoD), I wasn't aware that Antonica was so 'unpopular,' nor was I aware that the game was so top-heavy in terms of levels.

From what I know, the game is extremely top heavy. The only people who still play it are those who raid all the time. They're too in love with the time they've spent with their character to move on.

Most low levels are being power-levelled, or are taking the more common grind (had to do with Padual Caverns for 10 levels early on or something, if I remember right). The 'easiest to level' zones.

They changed a paladin ability.  Blessing of Light now doesn't make first-level heals super efficient.  I don't have Blessing of Light, since I'm not 40th level yet, so I can't say whether this matters at all to the average player.

Blessing of Light seemed to flat out (or close to it anyway) increase healing powers by the listed amount. 210 HP bonus for the slow heal, and 60 HP bonus for the low level one.

In short, Paladins could spam the lowest level heals and get the full HP bonus applied to it. That made them absurdly effecient healers. Nice bug.

I doubt it has anything to do with coding.  Blizzard's real keen on keeping their art direction consistent, and Taurens just aren't the right size to be riding other races mounts.  Kodos cost the same and offer no advantages because every racial mount costs the same, and none of them have advantages.

I've never heard of rare or dropped mounts - can you provide a link?

Tell Blizzard to work on my Human Paladin Mount then - my legs and cloak clip right through/into it all the time, and whenever I rear up (jump while standing still), my face smashes right into my horse's head.

As far as the rare/dropped mounts - there's a level 60 boss somewhere that drops a mount. Everybody but the Tauren can ride it. I don't know the name offhand, as otherwise I'd give you a Thottbot link.

Just for fun I opened up IE to exactly 800x600, and you're right - the CG logo plus ad are longer than 800 pixels wide. Yeah, it's obvious when presented with the numbers, but I figured what the heck.

I guess the reason that none of us notice is is because we all surf at larger than 800 pixels wide resolution.

This game is much harder than the first, I'll give you that. Either that or the Vah Shir Berzerker sucks as far as armor goes. In refrence, my first two playthroughs on the original was with the Wizard and Ranger.

As far as that 'invinicible' robot boss goes, you get into melee. He can do a TON more damage at range than he can in melee. It's not even funny.

You get into melee, block his strikes, then attack/spell. Repeat ad nausea until you've won.

Repeat this trick for most of the bosses in the game.

Keep in mind that at the time, I think the only race that had racial traits were the Undead, and Tauren had this one ability, and there were several problems with Plainsrunning as compared to the standard mounts.

If I remember correctly, you'd gain the Plainsrunning ability after running for like 10 seconds, and the first hit would knock you out of it. So, yes, it was useful, but useless compared to a real mount.

Can't tell you how many times I've been hit while riding across the countryside...

Problem with Kalimdor is that the areas are spread out much more as opposed to the Alliance areas around SW and IF. Can't speak about the horde areas though.

Don't play as a Tauren then. Their starting area is SO spread out and requires SO much running, it's almost sad.

In SW and IF, their n00b quests are all within about 100 yards of each other. For the Tauren, expect to run a 1000 yards just to do one quest. But the Tauren do have a nicer starting area (visuals) than SW or IF has, IMHO.

I want the 'localization' patch myself (even though it'll fix our Paladin bug and kill our DPS even more than we have it now), just because it'll fix the Hunter issue where pets don't cause a mob to be tapped. Thus, if my pet hits a mob first (to gain aggro before me), I lose experience.

I'm guessing the US emergency number gets your location based on your number and not by any trace (ie what exchange u go thru based on your number etc).

From what I know, yes, 911 just uses a simple lookup to find out where you're calling from. That's why you can't call 911 through one of these services, as you have no originating call number/location.

But you bring up an interesting point though... These sites must keep some kind of call record though. They just have to. Then it's a matter of tracing the call back to the account record (and at the very least the credit card information used to purchase minutes for the call).

15068  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Oddbal laptop performance hit... on: February 07, 2005, 12:20:02 AM
Well, the only reason that the fan is on is because the OS is demanding more processing power than the low power mode (usually 1/3 to 1/4th of your processor's max rated speed) can provide. Thus, it creates heat and all that kind of fun stuff.

But you say it's sluggish when that happens...

Only thing I can think of - give the laptop the three fingered salute (ctrl-alt-delete) and bring up the Task Manager. Click on Processes, and see if there's any program running that's taking a large percentage of your CPU (short of System Idle Process, which is normal). If you see something, that's quite possibly the reason.

Also, break out the can-o-air and give the fans and air entry ports a quick blowing. There might be something clogging the fan or blocking the normal airflow.

Beyond that, I'm not sure. I personally use a fan pad underneath my laptop, so I rarely notice it the processor fan firing up unless I'm playing games.

GT2 had obvious bugs? I remember there being a bug/car configuration in Gran Turismo 3 that could absolutely break the physics engine (your racecar would pop one mother of a wheelie and accelerate to upwards of 1000mph), but beyond that, I don't remember much wrong with the game.

15076  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Help Needed! on: February 03, 2005, 08:57:56 PM
Well, you can sorta find out of it's a RAM issue by removing the RAM entirely and rebooting. If you get the same message, that could be it.

But, as I've said before - do the usual. Make sure all the cables are connected properly (power especially), reseat every card and connector in the system, etc.

A quick search of Asus' site brought up three motherboards that seem to be the same thing. Hit this link:

Click on the link, pick a motherboard, and click on Download. That should allow you to pull a manual. I'd dig further, but I'm at work, and my connection utterly bites.

I loved FF8 because of the characters.  Each one was unique.  Quistis was absolutely gorgeous.  I even liked the moody Squall.  I never played FF9 because the main character with the tail (rat boy) and the little creature thing that looked like it was from He-Man (a cartoon I hated), both annoyed me (this is based on screenshots and reviews only).  I know it's a lame excuse since I didn't even try the game but caring for the characters is a big thing for me.

I am currently enjoying Star Ocean 3.  My only gripe there is the music being too loud and out of place in areas.  You need to keep the subtitles on so you can read since you can't hear the voices most of the time.  I tried Tales of Symphonia but it didn't grab me (again - characters).  Plus I didn't care for the combat scheme in Tales of Symphonia.

I hated FF8 because of the God-awful combat scheme where you were nearly forced to spend a half hour drawing or whatever the heck you did spells every time you found a new monster. That and the absurd decision to make you bust your controller and hands pushing buttons just to make your summons more powerful (and it was nearly required as well).

As far as Tales went, I was drawn into the game because of the characters and the combat system. I also loved SO3 because of the same action-based combat system.

But, as I said - everybody is different. Although you're really missing out not playing FF9 and the classic FF4 and FF6. biggrin

I'm highly interested in Darkstalkers and that Untold Legends game. Although, when I originally announced Darkstalkers was going to be a launch title on the site, why can't Capcom release the game on the standard sytems?

And as far as the price goes... I honestly think it's a bit steep. $250 for the console and a movie I could care less about (as I'd much rather watch it on my TV with surround)? Whoopie. The PS2 is what, $150 now? The DS is the same price, and the GBA SP is $89 in most places.

Ah, yes, and the Square button 'issue'. Wonderful design choice, especially when it was nearly stated that developers should work around the 'issue'.

What do I need to know about it?  I have a PS2 and XBox already.  What does the gamecube use for game saves?  If it is cards, are they expensive, do they have enough storage that I won't need to buy lots of them like I have for my PS2?

How about the controller?  I find that the XBox S-controller is the most comfortable console controller I have ever used.  The PS2 controller is a little too small for comfort on long gaming sessions.  Which one is the Gamecube controller comparable to?

You'll want to purchase the Nintendo Memory Card 151 (or some number close to that). That one card will be more than enough for all of your saving needs (about $20). I've had my Gamecube since launch, and I still have space left.

I have no qualms about the small controller, but it is the smallest of the three controllers by far. As long as you aren't playing any titles that require both analog sticks at the same time all the time (of which there aren't that many), you'll be fine.

I know that is a lot of questions about the cheapest of the consoles, but I have hated the Nintendo Corporation ever since they screwed over Atari back in the 1980's.   Therefore, now that I am thinking of giving them money, I guess I want reassurances that the Gamecube isn't going to destroy my house, or kill my cat, and that it will be just as comfortable to sit there and play for hours with that silly looking controller.

Last time I checked, Atari caused the great videogame crash back in the 80s because they produced a ton of absolutely worthless games that everybody just had to have, and the industry collapsed upon itself (See: ET). Nintendo themselves brought it back from the grave. But that's not here or now.

I've been a Nintendo supporter ever since the NES, and I'm still here. Odds are the system will last forever and a day as well. But ultimately, it's up to you if you wish to take that kind of risk. smile
