15041  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Champions: Return to Arms thoughts? on: February 10, 2005, 12:25:48 AM
Anybody playing this title? It's EXTREMELY MOTS compared to the original game (down to the exact same type of monsters and stages), but still fun.

Thoughts? Anybody playing online?

Good God I loved those clips. The creator of them received a good ol' cease and desist from Hasbro, so he had to take them off his site. I'm glad you can still find the vids around the net on other sites.

A big giant BOO to Hasbro for making him remove these movies. I haven't laughed so hard after watching some of these. They're just totally wrong.

Makes me glad I have them all saved locally on my PC. biggrin

Problem with Kalimdor is that the areas are spread out much more as opposed to the Alliance areas around SW and IF. Can't speak about the horde areas though.

Don't play as a Tauren then. Their starting area is SO spread out and requires SO much running, it's almost sad.

In SW and IF, their n00b quests are all within about 100 yards of each other. For the Tauren, expect to run a 1000 yards just to do one quest. But the Tauren do have a nicer starting area (visuals) than SW or IF has, IMHO.

I want the 'localization' patch myself (even though it'll fix our Paladin bug and kill our DPS even more than we have it now), just because it'll fix the Hunter issue where pets don't cause a mob to be tapped. Thus, if my pet hits a mob first (to gain aggro before me), I lose experience.

I'm guessing the US emergency number gets your location based on your number and not by any trace (ie what exchange u go thru based on your number etc).

From what I know, yes, 911 just uses a simple lookup to find out where you're calling from. That's why you can't call 911 through one of these services, as you have no originating call number/location.

But you bring up an interesting point though... These sites must keep some kind of call record though. They just have to. Then it's a matter of tracing the call back to the account record (and at the very least the credit card information used to purchase minutes for the call).

15055  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Oddbal laptop performance hit... on: February 07, 2005, 12:20:02 AM
Well, the only reason that the fan is on is because the OS is demanding more processing power than the low power mode (usually 1/3 to 1/4th of your processor's max rated speed) can provide. Thus, it creates heat and all that kind of fun stuff.

But you say it's sluggish when that happens...

Only thing I can think of - give the laptop the three fingered salute (ctrl-alt-delete) and bring up the Task Manager. Click on Processes, and see if there's any program running that's taking a large percentage of your CPU (short of System Idle Process, which is normal). If you see something, that's quite possibly the reason.

Also, break out the can-o-air and give the fans and air entry ports a quick blowing. There might be something clogging the fan or blocking the normal airflow.

Beyond that, I'm not sure. I personally use a fan pad underneath my laptop, so I rarely notice it the processor fan firing up unless I'm playing games.

Well, you can sorta find out of it's a RAM issue by removing the RAM entirely and rebooting. If you get the same message, that could be it.

But, as I've said before - do the usual. Make sure all the cables are connected properly (power especially), reseat every card and connector in the system, etc.

A quick search of Asus' site brought up three motherboards that seem to be the same thing. Hit this link:

Click on the link, pick a motherboard, and click on Download. That should allow you to pull a manual. I'd dig further, but I'm at work, and my connection utterly bites.

I loved FF8 because of the characters.  Each one was unique.  Quistis was absolutely gorgeous.  I even liked the moody Squall.  I never played FF9 because the main character with the tail (rat boy) and the little creature thing that looked like it was from He-Man (a cartoon I hated), both annoyed me (this is based on screenshots and reviews only).  I know it's a lame excuse since I didn't even try the game but caring for the characters is a big thing for me.

I am currently enjoying Star Ocean 3.  My only gripe there is the music being too loud and out of place in areas.  You need to keep the subtitles on so you can read since you can't hear the voices most of the time.  I tried Tales of Symphonia but it didn't grab me (again - characters).  Plus I didn't care for the combat scheme in Tales of Symphonia.

I hated FF8 because of the God-awful combat scheme where you were nearly forced to spend a half hour drawing or whatever the heck you did spells every time you found a new monster. That and the absurd decision to make you bust your controller and hands pushing buttons just to make your summons more powerful (and it was nearly required as well).

As far as Tales went, I was drawn into the game because of the characters and the combat system. I also loved SO3 because of the same action-based combat system.

But, as I said - everybody is different. Although you're really missing out not playing FF9 and the classic FF4 and FF6. biggrin

I'm highly interested in Darkstalkers and that Untold Legends game. Although, when I originally announced Darkstalkers was going to be a launch title on the site, why can't Capcom release the game on the standard sytems?

And as far as the price goes... I honestly think it's a bit steep. $250 for the console and a movie I could care less about (as I'd much rather watch it on my TV with surround)? Whoopie. The PS2 is what, $150 now? The DS is the same price, and the GBA SP is $89 in most places.

Ah, yes, and the Square button 'issue'. Wonderful design choice, especially when it was nearly stated that developers should work around the 'issue'.

What do I need to know about it?  I have a PS2 and XBox already.  What does the gamecube use for game saves?  If it is cards, are they expensive, do they have enough storage that I won't need to buy lots of them like I have for my PS2?

How about the controller?  I find that the XBox S-controller is the most comfortable console controller I have ever used.  The PS2 controller is a little too small for comfort on long gaming sessions.  Which one is the Gamecube controller comparable to?

You'll want to purchase the Nintendo Memory Card 151 (or some number close to that). That one card will be more than enough for all of your saving needs (about $20). I've had my Gamecube since launch, and I still have space left.

I have no qualms about the small controller, but it is the smallest of the three controllers by far. As long as you aren't playing any titles that require both analog sticks at the same time all the time (of which there aren't that many), you'll be fine.

I know that is a lot of questions about the cheapest of the consoles, but I have hated the Nintendo Corporation ever since they screwed over Atari back in the 1980's.   Therefore, now that I am thinking of giving them money, I guess I want reassurances that the Gamecube isn't going to destroy my house, or kill my cat, and that it will be just as comfortable to sit there and play for hours with that silly looking controller.

Last time I checked, Atari caused the great videogame crash back in the 80s because they produced a ton of absolutely worthless games that everybody just had to have, and the industry collapsed upon itself (See: ET). Nintendo themselves brought it back from the grave. But that's not here or now.

I've been a Nintendo supporter ever since the NES, and I'm still here. Odds are the system will last forever and a day as well. But ultimately, it's up to you if you wish to take that kind of risk. smile

15068  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / How do you evacuate an entire state, anyway? on: February 03, 2005, 04:53:32 PM
From the 'funnies' I used to do in my Wrap until my sources dried up:

Connecticut Tries to Force Evacuation of Itself

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Despite what residents may have seen on television, the state of Connecticut was not ordered evacuated Tuesday.

State emergency management officials believe someone pressed the wrong button, and instead of running a test of the emergency alert system, midday television viewers and radio listeners were told that the state was being evacuated.

"There is absolutely no evacuation or state emergency," said Kerry Flaherty, of the Office of Emergency Management. "It was an erroneous message."

The department was investigating how the alert was sent. Officials said it is manually released to broadcasters.

The error prompted Gov. M. Jodi Rell to issue a statement reassuring residents.

"We are looking into the circumstances and will take every step necessary to make certain this type of problem does not reoccur in the future," she said.

State police said they received no calls related to the erroneous alert.

So, here's my question. How do you evacuate an entire state? And what music/sound plays while they're displaying the warning on your local TV? Iron Maiden's 'Run To The Hills'? biggrin

And along the same line - is there just some control console somewhere in the capitol that has a bunch of giant red idiot buttons on them? Buttons like 'Test Emergency Broadcast Service', 'Severe Weather Alert', 'Incoming Typhoon', 'Evacuate State', 'Stay Puft Marshmellow Man Is On The Loose'?

Funny when you think about it, no?

Any thoughts on Xeno I and should I try it before Xeno II?  I believe these games are similar to Final Fantasy right?  I loved FF VIII, but absolutely hated FF X (too much movie, very little game).  I never tried FFIX.  I'm also currently playing and enjoying Star Ocean 3.

You loved FF8, yet hated FF10, and never played FF9? Personally, from what I've seen, if you enjoyed FF7/FF8, then FF10 was a hit as well, and FF9 was a bomb (as it was more old-school). But, as the saying goes - to each their own.

I for one hated FF8, found 10 boring, and found 7 to be responsible for Americanization of RPGs as we know of it today. Even though it wasn't that good of an RPG in the end. And I loved 9, as I've been playing the FF titles since #1.

Anyway...Star Ocean 3 is a great game, as is Tales of Symponia on the Gamecube. Other RPGs to try (if you don't want to try Xenosaga) are the two Wild Arms titles due out in the next month or two. One is a remake/redo of the original Wild Arms game, and the other is the true sequel to the series.

Completely agree with you there. Why some company can't put together this basic formula and put it into a next generation title is beyond me.

Zelda is a must. Arguably the best Zelda title ever made.

Conker is also a must. If you have any sense of humor at all, you'll be busting a gut at many places of the game. Just remember the timeperiod when it was made, as some of the jokes were funny back then. Of course, who can't forget the Great Mighty Poo? biggrin

Starfox 64 is a fun shooter to pick up. It also shows the origin of the Rumble Pack (a device that has been in every controller since then in some form), as well as the feat of a ton of voice in a very tiny space (as far as the storage space of carts go).

Many other games as well fall into the 'amazingly great' category.

Super Smash Brothers: Melee
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Resident Evil 4

F-Zero GX

However, I ask you this - if you could redesign the control scheme for Metroid Prime, to make it dual analog, how would you do it without losing the rapid switching of weapons/visors that is needed in this game?

The NPCs are in a spot thats hard to find and you first have to do a whole series of quests before you can get this one. Plus, the completion of the first quest they give you ends at an NPC in Darnassus and that NPC gives you no indication that NPCs you helped now will offer you another quest.

Isn't it also like a level 45+ quest as well? I've seen a few players with this pet, and I've realized it's far cooler than my little panda I have.
