I won't even comment upon their use of the Gravity Gun, as I have absolutely no plans on buying an expansion to the darkest and dullest FPS ever created. Half-Life 2 is so much better.

P.S. Can anyone say loot lag?

That made its way from beta into retail eh?

Short of the rare lag bubble in looting (twice in a bit over two hours), I had no problems looting at all.

I was in a semi-crowded NE starting zone, although the server itself was marked only as Low in population when I came in. I didn't look to see where it was when I left. I played from 12noon till about 2:15 MST.

Hit level 7 in that timespan. Had no problems finding mobs once I vacated the initial starting spot. Even before then it wasn't much of a problem.

Well more impressions anyone?  I am interested in this game but many of the reviews have pointed out that it is hard - much harder than the first game.  I have to admit I don't really care for really hard games, I simply have to much to play to get hung up on one fustrating game.

Anyway, how are people finding the difficulty?

Yes, the game is a bit harder than the original. Also, you have to (once again) wander the planet and try to find the artifacts hidden all over the place.

Is the difficulty a turn off though for me? As somebody who loved the first Metroid Prime, no, it isn't. I'm enjoying the added challenge.

Well, I've owned a Tungsten T|3 now ever since launch day, and I love it.

It'll play lots of games (although emulating the SNES is beyond its power), does lots of things, and as far as medical aps go, I found that this free app at:
http://www2.epocrates.com/index.html
was a great little program to keep on me (I work as a pharmacy tech at my local grocery chain).

Now, after the total blunder of the Tungsten T|5 (it's a freaking E2, NOT a T5!), I've been wondering if I should upgrade to the latest Dell Axim model, as it's been getting some great reviews around the web. The only issue is that I'd lose all the titles I have for my Palm, as they aren't cross-compatible.

Maybe I'll get the Treo 650 instead...

The battery power (or lack thereof) is an issue though. Under heavy use (running the .mp3 player in the background constantly), expect 3 hours, tops, of battery life. If you're not doing too much with it, it'll last longer than that, but at best, you're looking at about 4-5 hours of continous use between recharges.

I picked one up from Best Buy today, along with a copy of Super Mario 64 DS. It's silver and my first impression was that it looks good. I have to disagree with Devil's assertion that it looks cheap. The outside case looks relatively stylish compared to the SP and the thing feels very durable. Unfortunately, it is a bit on the heavy side. After the first twenty minutes it started to feel like a brick, but I'm starting to get used to it. Just got done playing MArio 64 for an hour and didn't have any problems.

I really should pick up Super Mario 64 DS. I loved the original, and I think it's about time I replay it again... biggrin

As far as the weight of the console is concerned, hold it exactly like Nintendo suggested inside the manual somewhere - one hand holding the Digital Pad/L Button (or the buttons/R), the other on the other side, with your thumb aimed towards the center of the touch screen. It's a bit odd at first, but it distrubutes one's weight rather well.

Honestly, I don't think I'll ever use the stylus short of Pictochat. The thumb thingy is too inaccurate for accurate point-and-click, although the game does compensate to a point if you have it on.

And to show off how well you are at controlling the touchpad, try going through the Morph Ball sequence with the MP:H demo using the touchpad only. If anything, it will drastically improve your 'touching' abilities. biggrin

One last thing - If you score in the top five of all three sequences in the demo, you'll unlock a secret movie in MP:H. Looks pretty, and if you want to show it off afterwards, you can click on a new glowy button at the title screen (Touch here to start).

Well, I've put in a bit of time on my DS here at work (I'm bored, so sue me smile ), and my first impression is as followed:

It's dark.

Maybe I'm used to the 'ultrabrite' technology on my laptop, or the ability to bring up the backlighting on my Palm Tungsten T|3, but playing the demo of Metroid Prime: Hunters, my first thought was that the game is very dark.

The game controls well, is very smooth (looks to be locked at 30fps), and is decently pretty (looks to be about a N64 title, if not a bit better looking thanks to the small screen). Surprisingly, after a bit of a learning curve, controlling the game with the wrist strap 'thumb thing' works very well. It won't replace an analog controller (something which you can find on portables like the Tapwave Zodiac), but it works.

But where's the controls to turn up the brightness? Maybe in a darker room it'll be brighter, as my work is filled with light. More on that later.

Yeah, I found the webmessenger site when I was browsing around before. It's better than nothing, but that's not saying much.

I just don't get this though. I pulled the full version of Netscape, which has AIM included, but while I can connect to the web with it, it won't use the same configuration protocols that the AIM feature uses.

IE/Firefox/Netscape under the Proxies tab has an 'Automatic proxy configuration URL' field, which accepts my proxy info (single line, just paste in).

AIM on the other hand, under the Netscape download, requires a slew of proxy info, including Host, Port, Username/Password, and what Protocol type I'm using. Why can't it just use the one line that the browser itself needs in order to connect to the 'net?

I simply don't have all that info, nor do I have any idea what the hell it really is. Anybody have any suggestions?

A few questions. I see they support GBA games, will those have any extra functionality?

Does it have PDA functions, like an address book, etc?

The DS supports all SINGLE PLAYER GBA titles. It does NOT support any multiplayer features whatsoever, as the link cable will not work with the DS. Other than that, yes, it'll play all GBA games out there.

As for the PDA... This would be a fantastic idea. Just think - a console that can play games extremely well and be a PDA AND sell for only $150 (compared to a $300 Palm device)? Now that would sell.

As I said though - I need a browser based solution, as most software packages (I've tried Trillian and now Gush) just can't seem to get around the firewall we have up at work. Either I don't know how to configure the thing properly, or the funky way our firewall works (requiring that link I provided before) just outright stops it.

I'll give Netscape a try (had to download all the files here at home though, as once again, I couldn't get around the firewall), and I found out that MSN.com has their own web based chat service as well.

Wish me luck, as I want to be lazy. smile

Gush uses a proxy and gateways so you can communicate with AIM, MSN and Yahoo networks. Unless they block the jabber network which it runs on.

The whole problem is that I access the internet via a firewall somewhere down the line (requires a user/pass to access), and as thus, most software programs simply won't accept the commands to bypass it.

That's why I liked AIM on the web - it was completely contained in the browser window. Nothing to download.

I'll give it a try, as well as Netscape's thingy. I haven't used Netscape in, well, a very long time. biggrin

To be exact, I have to type this in under the 'Automatic Configuration URL' field in Firefox:

15063  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Official Playstation Holiday 2004 Demo Disc Nukes Saves! on: November 19, 2004, 07:23:20 PM
Just wanted to post here and inform of you all that the 2005 Holiday edition of the Official Playstation disc WILL nuke your memory card if you play it:

http://www.consolegold.com/News/news.php?NewsID=583:

Do you have the official Playstation Underground Demo Disk for Holiday 2004? If so, remove your memory card(s) from the console before playing Viewtiful Joe 2, or else you WILL regret it. From the Gaming-Age forums:

Everything was fine until I played the Jak 3 and VJ 2 demos on the Playstation Underground demo disk... The next time I booted up my system I went to the console to check something out and it told me that my memory card (1st party Sony) needed to be formatted.

Great. So, the demo disk erased my memory card. It was just fine before I put it in because I checked it to see something and afterwards I checked it again to see if it put any saves on my card. That's when it told me I had to reformat. I am going to try to recreate the conditions again just to verify but just a warning to be careful.

Update: I have been able to recreate this bug 100% of the time. It happens when you boot into the VJ2 demo and make it to at least the 2nd load point (where you get the mach FX).

According to posters, this is affecting any and all memory cards you may have inserted, no matter who made the card.

I've been a lazy bum here at work over the last few months, and I've been visiting AOL.com and clicking on the idiot button to use AIM on the web (as I'm behind a firewall and that keeps Trillian and anything else I usually use from working).

Well, yesterday, AOL decided to change the AOL.com front page, and now instead you have to visit aim.com to access the 'bring up AIM on the web' feature.

Only one problem - aim.com is a blocked website.

So, in order to continue my lazy practices here at work, I need some way to either punch around/through my firewall (not likely), or I need some kind of link I can simply click on (or some sort of Javascript code like AOL used before).

Does anybody have any suggestions/tips?

Ripped from somewhere else:

"Getting the game to load as much of its self into memory as possible also helps a lot; to do this, right click on Half-Life 2 in steam and select properties, then click launch options, put in "-heapsize 256000" without the quote marks. For the number, choose half your total system memory, in the examples case, its for a system with 512megs ram, you should use 512000 for systems with a gig of ram."

I run a gig of RAM and I did the recommendations listed - made a HUGE difference as far as the fabled 'Loading' screen goes. And the game seems to be a bit smoother as well.

The only MMO in recent history (or history, period) that I know of that allowed people to keep their characters was Lineage 2, and that was because the majority of testers had no plans on buying the game as it was so bad. biggrin

It's not gonna happen. At best, you'll be able to transfer your beta characters (or one of them, anyway) to their official Test server. To a retail server, it's not gonna happen. It will SO break the economy, among many, many, many other things, it's not even funny.

Like any hugely popular MMO, the login server simply isn't meant to handle 100,000 simulatinous login attempts. biggrin

The only way to knock that off is to bitch-slap the lot of them in a Halo 2 deathmatch. biggrin So, here's the situation in Casa de Whiteboy:

Honestly, your best situation is just to get a bunch of wire and drag it up and down every time you want to play Xbox Live. It solves any extra expense/issues/whatever with getting wireless.

It's also a lot cheaper. You're looking at least $50 just getting a wireless connection hooked up (with the risk of issues) verses $10-$15 tops for a long length of cable.

Xbox Live is $50 a year. You give Microsoft your card and they'll auto-renew you each year as well.

From what I hear, Blizzard only has one item server. In short, whenever anybody loots, their request goes all into that server, which is outrageously overloaded right now.

There wasn't this problem in Beta or even the Stress Test. However, thanks to the Open Beta (and the 500,000 people who signed up for it), they now know the weaknesses in their system.

Blizzard knows about this and will have it fixed at launch. At least they better. smile

The dust devil I saw was 4 lanes of street wide. It didn't do much but gather up a ton of dust and blow it around like a tornado.

Remember - they're nowhere nearly as powerful as a tornado. Hell - odds are, even if you walked into it, you'd only get pounded by small bits of rock and dust. Yeah, it would hurt, but it doesn't have the power to pick up your average human.

The reason that tent thing flew was because it was light and had a lot of surface for the wind to pick up (like a parachute).
