I got this game for PC yesterday and played it until I reached the second "bonfire". It seems very promising so far. Lots of people are talking about constant crashes and instability, but I haven't seen anything of the sort. On the other hand, my PC is pretty powerful, enough to run this game at a stable 60 fps on very high detail.

I've heard that this is due to some brand new 'unbreakable' DRM (at least according to a /. article). While it apparently has stopped the 'hackers' (after 3 days anyway), it's causing a lot of system instability in general to a lot of people.

Yeah, the devs deliberately reduced the importance of perfect timing in this game. There are still timed puzzles, but the window you have to complete whatever you need to do is larger and more forgiving than in the first game.

Yeah, I've seen that too. Definitely a good thing.

Grimrock 2 is a huge improvement over the original...which honestly is really hard to do because I enjoyed the hell out of Grimrock 1. If you even remotely love the classic Dungeon Masters, Eye of the Beholders, or just want to play a beautifully remastered 'classic game', buy this now.

I still can't understand why more developers don't give the option to choose between IAP, or a full priced premium download. The number of games I've skipped because of these stupid timers is in the dozens.

Because they're stupid, that's why.

Also, they like money - games that stop you via 'energy' tend to make a TON more than normal premium downloads.

While I love the 6, the whole thin-ness thing is really reaching the point where you're almost trying to grab a razor's edge if you don't add some sort of case on it. It's also such a slick surface that it'll slide out of your pocket at the slightest change in body angle. As I found out.  icon_redface

That's one reason why I got an Apple case on my 5 - the thing was too small and too slick. I was afraid of dropping it too.

A comment from someone on the Ubi team has made me worried about these consoles, he basically said that AI is processed by the CPU and that the PS4/Xbox are not powerful enough to handle the game above 30FPS (steadily) because of it. Granted, AC games tend to have more AI characters on screen at once than most games, but it's still disheartening. I'm hoping the limitation is overcome as time goes on or at least only applies to open-world games of this magnitude.

Keep in mind that (apparently) both consoles are 1.6GHz quad-core AMD machines of some generation. I'm not at all surprised we're running into problems especially considering that PCs are available 2GHz faster (and I'm guessing a generation or two ahead in efficiency, too).

In short, there's no way we're reaching the 'mythical' 1080p at 60fps this console generation either.
129  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox One Discussion on: October 07, 2014, 02:04:07 AM
Thanks, XB1 owners - Assassin's Creed Unity is being nerfed down to your level because of bags of money (and/or corporate stupidity):

It started with a quote from Ubisoft Montreal producer Vincent Pontbriand, speaking to the website Video Gamer about their decision to keep Unity maintaining 900p resolution and 30 frames per second on both the Xbox One and PS4.

"We decided to lock them at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff," Pontbriand reportedly said, no doubt referring to a string of extended conversations that have sprung up in the past year over the technical differences between Sony and Microsoft's current-gen consoles.

No doubt this also means that like Watch Dogs, the PC version will be shit and/or heavily modified. Hopefully a few ini tweaks (and other things) can restore the game to looking like it should on the PC version.

(I'm joking about blaming XB1 owners - but I still think it's a terrible idea.)

My PS4, which I bought at launch, is just gathering dust. The only thing I turn it on for is playing the console exclusives - everything else is absolutely totally better on the PC (which what the PS4/XB1 is to begin with, except extremely behind in tech)...what games I actually play to begin with.

Like JCC, I'll buy a WiiU one of these years (maybe), just for their exclusives...but we'll see.

There is nothing wrong with 8 (once you either update to 8.1 so you don't boot into Metro anymore or you install a replacement Start Menu bar (Classic Start Menu is awesome)). That's all 8 did over 7 - change the UI. And it's something I fixed Day 1 upon installing.

So, they may be skipping Windows 9 because of...lazy coders?:

When Windows 10 got announced, there was one immediately glaring question: Why Windows 10? Maybe for the extra distance from 8, but a Redditor who claims to be a Microsoft dev has a better—and funnier—answer. The name "Windows 9" could break a whole bunch of lazy code.
Microsoft dev here, the internal rumours are that early testing revealed just how many third party products that had code of the form

if(version.StartsWith("Windows 9"))
{ /* 95 and 98 */
} else {

and that this was the pragmatic solution to avoid that.

If this is true or not I have no idea. But to be frank...I wouldn't be surprised at all. Also explanation of what the code above means and why it's bad is in the link.

EDIT: This link is provided at one point:

You know what? I do think this is entirely true.

Honestly the conditions you'd need to put it in in order to break it sound pretty fucking uncomfortable in the first place. That's what's dissuading me - the likelihood it will not feel good in my pants. The bending is a far secondary concern.

Yeah, that's my issue too. I just need to visit an Apple store and see how both feel/fit into the clothing I usually wear.

Also, once you put any sort of case onto the phone (even the minimal Apple ones for example) it'll strengthen the case itself dramatically.

Jamming is an entertaining stat, as proven by Space Hulk. It keeps you on your toes and makes you keep your options open, rarely being able to expect things to run smoothly. And no, you don't multiply by 10. The percentage is accurate in my experience.

And I've run into segments that I call, "The RNG is trying to kill me." Gun has 1% jam chance. It jams. Next turn I hit reload to fix it. I go to shoot the next turn and it jams again.

That said, spread out over what I've played so far, the jam chance seems to be accurate. It just means that every single gun needs a Sturdy Mag installed into it.

I'm shocked!
Because they, like Apple, tested it at the very MIDDLE of the phone...and not the massive weak point at the volume button.

Take a look/read - quite informative IMHO as to why the phone breaks down as it does.

Also, BTW, between the three latest iPhones, the force in pounds needed to bend the phones in the middle:

5 - 130
6 - 90
6+ - 70

Yeah I get the phone is bigger but ouch.
148  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Let's talk Iphone on: September 24, 2014, 07:41:26 PM
Word of warning - the iPhone 6 (and especially the plus it seems) is entirely capable of being bent out of shape by the strength of just your hands (as well as sitting around in a pocket).

Yes, this is an issue with a lot of larger phones it seems (especially since we're in the 'make it tiny thin above all else!' times), but frankly it's something I'm surprised to hear about in an iProduct. Looks like it's well worth investing in a good case (as it'll help absorb any kind of bending stress like that).

This is the article that convinced me not to try it. It uses AT&T for roaming, but they charge T-Mobile for it, so the user's data speed is throttled.

If there was a way to test out their network without buying I would be willing to try them, but no one I know has T-Mobile. I don't want to risk buying a full price phone even if I can switch to AT&T, because then I end up paying a lot more in the long run. Unfortunately it's easier to just keep giving Verizon money.

Very interesting. Well, only thing I can say is that I spent all my time in a very populated city, so I just don't have to worry about roaming and such (also, my brother has AT&T and I haven't seen any performance differences between the two). Although I'm not happy to learn that my wifi calling doesn't actually 'work' as I'm on a prepaid plan. Oh well. Still don't make any calls. LOL

Verizon is far from perfect, and expensive, but I know it works. Won't have the Verizon phone until October unfortunately.

T-Mobile piggybacks on AT&T's network and it's quite solid (subscriber here since April of '13). It's not Verizon, but nothing else is.

From my understanding, it's more about resource collection than anything else. Do you not own land (which is easy to do as each server has a land max, and, well, they're all taken within the first day of a server opening)? Well, you can plant trees and herbs and such anywhere you want...and then anybody can take it from you as well.

Some things in retrospective:

THE ENTIRETY OF MARVEL, which includes all the comics and movie licenses and toys and everything else was sold for $4 Billion.
THE ENTIRETY OF LUCASFILM, which is everything Star Wars (basically) was sold for $4 Billion.

Mojang, which exists as a single (hugely) popular game and one that isn't so (especially in comparison of the first), along with server rentals and a multitude of action figures? $2.5 Billion.

...the figures just don't add up at all. Especially since Microsoft says that they'll make their money back in a fiscal year (by June 2015). Wow.

I love Minecraft (and bought it for a very early beta price of like $12 years and years ago, and still play it today, although it's heavily modded up) just as much as the next person. But it's absolutely not worth that price.

Get off the contracts! Contracts are the devil! Go to T-Mobile! Tongue
64 GB iPhone 6+:
AT&T - $399
T-Mobile - $849

So not signing a 2-year contract to get the device subsidized, when I've used all my previous devices for three years, will cost me an extra $450 dollars?  I think I'll pass.  Tongue

I pay $30 a month plus tax on T-Mobile for my iPhone 5 (web only plan of 100 minutes, 'unlimited' data, unlimited text, full LTE support). A similar plan would be $80, easily (and it was that -after- discounts on Sprint, the last plan I was on). So you save $50 a month.

Over the usual 2 year contract (24 months), you've saved $1200...assuming you don't break the phone (this plan does not allow insurance) or do something like upgrade in a year (although you'd still save money in the long run).

EDIT: Yes, I realize that I run my phone under a very 'specialized' plan, but it has saved me so much money already. And it'll keep doing so, too.
