Give me access to like 4 stations of my choosing (none of them are ESPN and none of them are the extended cable stations like HBO or Cinemax), along with the usual 'over the air' stations (ABC, NBC, etc), at a reasonable price, and I'll start paying for cable again.

Until that happens, good riddance.

I bought Dragon Age: Inquisition for way too little (yay for making Origin think that I'm in Mexico instead of the US by using a proxy, thus saving $25 on the 'digital collectors edition'), so I'm off playing that. I'd wish they'd patch it though - the 'cinema scenes' look so jumpy and low FPS.

Just remember, we were all really excited when we saw the Phantom Menace trailer too.

Actually, I was FAR more excited about the Phantom Menace trailer than I am with this piece of crap. You don't 'tease' anything by showing absolutely nothing whatsoever.

Somewhat related to the trailer:
125  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Star Wars Episode VII Director Revealed on: November 29, 2014, 03:12:39 AM
Actually, a crossguard on a lightsaber makes complete sense.

Think of swordfighting. Okay, so the two of you clash up with your blades. All one person needs to do is shift their force downward and suddenly their blade is chopping off fingers if there's no crossguard to get into the way.

Frankly it's something that was needed for a while now on a Lightsaber - some kind of protection to the hand wielding the thing.

As for the trailer - it didn't say anything, it didn't show hardly anything, and it didn't tell anything about what to expect on the movie. Basically Disney went out and said, "WE'RE MAKING A STAR WARS MOVIE!!" for all the zero people who didn't already know. biggrin

I wonder if these new stormtrooper helmets will allow the stuntmen and extras wearing them to actually see where they're going.

A little late replying to this, but:

4. No Clone Trooper armor was ever produced for the films.

It's become a joke how overreliant Lucas was on greenscreen and special effects over the course of the Prequel trilogy - virtually every set had some major greenscreen component, giving everything a slightly-too-clean sheen about it. But this might surprise you - there was never a single piece of actual Clone Trooper armor ever on-screen. Literally every time you see a Clone Trooper in armor, it's completely CGI - the only times any part of a Clone Trooper isn't ALL CGI is when their face appears, and any time you see a Clone Trooper with a helmet on, it's 100%.

To be fair, this probably had something to do with the original Stormtrooper Armor being notoriously uncomfortable to wear, see out of, breathe in, etc.

Quick question - I'm considering this for my eldest.  Since the kids invariably share games, I need to know how many separate save slots there are available.

My digital download version has 3. I'd assume that the cart version would be 3 as well (as games save to the memory card and not to the cart itself).

My Surface 3 (the piece of crap that it is with its shitty built in Maxwell wifi chip) is just my secondary computer if you will. It holds all my chat clients, Skype, and everything else I need. It sits underneath my gaming PC's monitor (or next to me when I'm on a console) and it gives me access to anything no matter what I'm doing.

Ubisoft has published a handy rundown of known technical issues with Assassin's Creed Unity as well as the status of fixes. Framerate's on the list for all platforms, with the following workaround offered pending more fixes: "If playing single player, we suggest that you disconnect from your internet connection (wifi or network cable). It could potentially improve frame rate." a game that all but DEMANDS multiplayer (especially to use the above hacking functions and treasure chest openings and everything else), Ubisoft suggests that you turn off the internet to try to get a boosted FPS?

Fuck. I'm glad I didn't buy this crap at launch.

Why are you guys buying the premium companion app anyway? You're basically telling Ubisoft that it's totally fine for them to shove these fucking blue chests in our faces. I'm not even going to install the base companion app, and I hate that these blue chests are everywhere despite not being part of the game. They might as well have had huge ads for their app hanging from the Notre Dame.

THANK YOU. Finally, somebody with some damn sense.

Ubisoft has the gall to embargo a review of a game they KNOW is rife with problems until 12 hours AFTER the launch (and here the latest Dragon Age game had its review come out a WEEK early), and now you're paying to open a fucking treasure chest that's right in front of you?

I wonder why I've gotten tired of the series, and it's the above that explains it well. Companion app after companion app where they just want all your personal information to do stuff you would've been able to do back in the golden age of gaming for free (and without installing said app).

I got this game for PC yesterday and played it until I reached the second "bonfire". It seems very promising so far. Lots of people are talking about constant crashes and instability, but I haven't seen anything of the sort. On the other hand, my PC is pretty powerful, enough to run this game at a stable 60 fps on very high detail.

I've heard that this is due to some brand new 'unbreakable' DRM (at least according to a /. article). While it apparently has stopped the 'hackers' (after 3 days anyway), it's causing a lot of system instability in general to a lot of people.

Yeah, the devs deliberately reduced the importance of perfect timing in this game. There are still timed puzzles, but the window you have to complete whatever you need to do is larger and more forgiving than in the first game.

Yeah, I've seen that too. Definitely a good thing.

Grimrock 2 is a huge improvement over the original...which honestly is really hard to do because I enjoyed the hell out of Grimrock 1. If you even remotely love the classic Dungeon Masters, Eye of the Beholders, or just want to play a beautifully remastered 'classic game', buy this now.

Because they're stupid, that's why.

Also, they like money - games that stop you via 'energy' tend to make a TON more than normal premium downloads.

A comment from someone on the Ubi team has made me worried about these consoles, he basically said that AI is processed by the CPU and that the PS4/Xbox are not powerful enough to handle the game above 30FPS (steadily) because of it. Granted, AC games tend to have more AI characters on screen at once than most games, but it's still disheartening. I'm hoping the limitation is overcome as time goes on or at least only applies to open-world games of this magnitude.

Keep in mind that (apparently) both consoles are 1.6GHz quad-core AMD machines of some generation. I'm not at all surprised we're running into problems especially considering that PCs are available 2GHz faster (and I'm guessing a generation or two ahead in efficiency, too).

In short, there's no way we're reaching the 'mythical' 1080p at 60fps this console generation either.
142  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox One Discussion on: October 07, 2014, 02:04:07 AM
Thanks, XB1 owners - Assassin's Creed Unity is being nerfed down to your level because of bags of money (and/or corporate stupidity):

It started with a quote from Ubisoft Montreal producer Vincent Pontbriand, speaking to the website Video Gamer about their decision to keep Unity maintaining 900p resolution and 30 frames per second on both the Xbox One and PS4.

"We decided to lock them at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff," Pontbriand reportedly said, no doubt referring to a string of extended conversations that have sprung up in the past year over the technical differences between Sony and Microsoft's current-gen consoles.

No doubt this also means that like Watch Dogs, the PC version will be shit and/or heavily modified. Hopefully a few ini tweaks (and other things) can restore the game to looking like it should on the PC version.

(I'm joking about blaming XB1 owners - but I still think it's a terrible idea.)

My PS4, which I bought at launch, is just gathering dust. The only thing I turn it on for is playing the console exclusives - everything else is absolutely totally better on the PC (which what the PS4/XB1 is to begin with, except extremely behind in tech)...what games I actually play to begin with.

So, they may be skipping Windows 9 because of...lazy coders?:

When Windows 10 got announced, there was one immediately glaring question: Why Windows 10? Maybe for the extra distance from 8, but a Redditor who claims to be a Microsoft dev has a better—and funnier—answer. The name "Windows 9" could break a whole bunch of lazy code.
Microsoft dev here, the internal rumours are that early testing revealed just how many third party products that had code of the form

if(version.StartsWith("Windows 9"))
{ /* 95 and 98 */
} else {

and that this was the pragmatic solution to avoid that.

If this is true or not I have no idea. But to be frank...I wouldn't be surprised at all. Also explanation of what the code above means and why it's bad is in the link.

EDIT: This link is provided at one point:

You know what? I do think this is entirely true.

And I've run into segments that I call, "The RNG is trying to kill me." Gun has 1% jam chance. It jams. Next turn I hit reload to fix it. I go to shoot the next turn and it jams again.

That said, spread out over what I've played so far, the jam chance seems to be accurate. It just means that every single gun needs a Sturdy Mag installed into it.
