I did not get the extended warranty. That always seems like a sucker's bet. What are people's experiences there?

Put money away to cover repair/replacement and you'll be far better off, IMHO.

It also makes you be a lot more careful with it and such, too.

They still have those 'tons of potions' (generally a new NPC drop every 3 levels or so), but it's frankly not an issue as long as you visit a vendor every so often, and/or buy some bag space.

And I can't imagine playing ESO on a console. Why? Zero mod support.

What needs to happen is that the businesses that send DMCA notices and other crap like listed above need to actually be responsible for doing so in the first place. There IS a fine for sending a false one...which everybody on the planet (at least those who generally send the claims anyhow) is completely immune to getting hit with.

9  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Anyone tried Cricket wireless? on: April 06, 2015, 10:10:00 PM
Only thing I can really say is this - Cricket (and all other carriers that aren't the main 4 in the US) bounces off of one of the other carriers for their cell use (generally either T-Mobile or Sprint depending on the phone, but far from always). So find out which one it is, and then that'll give you a general idea of how their service will be and such.
10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii U on: April 06, 2015, 09:53:51 PM
Nintendo doesn't know what the fuck they're doing anymore.

They've stopped FREE FUCKING ADVERTISING with people making Youtube videos. There's a reason why NOBODY ELSE cares if you make Let's Plays - again, it's free advertising!

Their Amiibos? They're absolute fucking retards with their utter inability to make more of the 'rare' figures. I gave them a pass with their first wave, but THEY FUCKING KNOW BETTER now and they STILL don't give a flying fuck. They could have SO much more money with people buying these little toys that they don't otherwise make at all (like say, action figures and such), but no, they give everybody the middle finger and would rather not make more.

Nintendo nowadays is so out in left field they have no idea what game they're playing anymore. It's really, really sad.

Totally, yes. Like how you can find a dungeon in the first main town - which can (and totally will) kick your ass if you go into it as soon as you can. By design. PoE doesn't do the 'quest hub' mentality that most RPGs do. So come back later if you feel overwhelmed because odds are you are.

Nintendo wants you to 'upgrade' to their newest and best and more confusing name game console.

Slashdot has been posting some excellent 'stories' today, like this:

Quote
Imperial investigators are still trying to piece together what happened in last week's horrifying terrorist attack on our largest orbital defense station. Over a million loyal citizens, scientists, and medical staff lost their lives in the grisly attack while the station was being put through training exercises near the Yavin system. Billions more are in mourning, while a number of powerful senators have renewed calls to increase defense spending. Initial reports have confirmed Rebel involvement, and officials are making inquiries about a young insurgent from Tatooine with known ties to religious fundamentalists.

Larger fans can move more air per revolution, thus they can spin slower and generate less noise. Or at the very least, said noise is of a lower pitch.

3) The Galaxy BLADE Edge: http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/galaxy-blade-edge-chefs-edition/ (the world's first smart knife with smartphone capabilities!)
20  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Blackjack's new gaming rig on: March 31, 2015, 03:34:41 PM
The noise you're hearing is some kind of fan. My gaming rig has multiple large ones in it and I can always hear a low hum come from it. The only time it gets louder (and more high pitched) is when my GPU fan kicks in to high (as since that's a tiny fan, it makes a higher pitched noise).

Also, IMHO, do not get the 'hybrid' HD/SSD drives. The performance boost (minor at best) just isn't worth it. Get another full on SSD drive if you want to see everything speed on by.

While Destructor's list of bugs is quite serious, I wouldn't encourage anyone to wait to play for a patch. The worst bugs-crash on transition and it em - related - are simple to avoid. Don't double click to equip items, and don't go to the completely optional Hold until a patch hits.

The crash on transition bug (Redrick's Hold) is something anyone can hit because according to the forums, the files for the level itself are damaged (trying to unzip the data files comes back with an error in the file it tries to access for that map and like 4 others).

The other bugs are brain dead easy to 'stumble' into. Double clicking items to equip them deletes passive abilities. Loading your save game in the same zones where you get companions (at any point in the game) causes those companions to get cloned buffs from equipment. +Focus Items when equipped will outright -destroy- a Cipher class (you no longer gain Focus in battle). Saving the game with certain combat buffs on (like weapon replacement ones) and loading that save again causes you to permanently lose the ability to equip items in that slot. Sending your teammates to an inn (kicking them out of the party) can cause you to lose all the items they have on them.

There's also an unexplained one going around where something completely utterly breaks in the save game system, and when you get that, you can no longer save or load a game until you've wiped the game itself completely off your drive (and your saves as well).

This game is a buggy nightmare like so many other releases in the past 6 months. The sad part is that I STILL want to play it despite the bugs. Pillars of Eternity is that good!

Wow, very disappointed to learn about these bugs.  The game had otherwise been working fine for me.  I'll wait for the patch before I continue on.

Bugs that increase a character's stats/skills/defenses.
Bugs that decrease a character's stats/skills/defenses.
Bugs that permanently delete items.
Bugs that permanently keep summoned monsters around.
Bugs that permanently break the ability to hold weapons.
Bugs that corrupt map data, forcing you to delete the file in your save or else your game is done.

And a lot of the above can just happen by you playing the game normally. And you'll never know you got bugged until you look at things hours later.

The game is an absolute nightmare with bugs...and yet I want to keep playing. It's that good of a game behind all the bugs.
23  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Pillars of Eternity on: March 30, 2015, 11:57:52 PM
I'm going to be very blunt at this point - I highly recommend against playing PoE at this point. The game is absolutely filled with multiple catastrophic bugs that can and will either completely screw over your characters by either removing their powers or turning them into near-superheroes, among many other things.

http://steamcommunity.com/app/291650/discussions/0/618457398976258195/

There's even more major issues that aren't listed above, too - I encountered save corruption which kept me from zoning back into a map that I'd explored until I deleted the map file in my save. Also my tank is a near-God at this point and has like 90 defenses across the board. No idea if I've hit some of the other character corruption issues.

The bugs are being fixed, yes, but until then, I seriously recommend stopping play.

EDIT: Lockdown, yes, that is correct. Like Baldur's Gate, Eternity is 'designed' around you playing with the NPCs that are in the game. It's recommended you get a 'generic' NPC or two until you've found the developer designed ones and then let them go back into the inn and such. The generic NPCs have no story, no nothing. You want the developer ones. They're that interesting to have around.
24  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Pillars of Eternity on: March 29, 2015, 01:49:21 AM
I wish my Druid had a defensive boost (wolf). Lots of DPS, but if something just looks my way my Druid just drops.

I ran into a game breaking bug myself - if you're in Raedric's Hold, and suddenly you can't map change, your save is borked (and apparently it hits a lot of people, too). Thankfully it can be fixed...manually:

http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/72016-raedrics-hold-game-crash/page-7

Long story short, you edit your save and delete the level data that is corrupted. Yes, that map is reset, but you can play again.

One really important tip: Play smarter, NOT harder. Even on Easy you can't just charge in with your characters. You'll get eaten alive. Use doorways to your advantage, send your tank(s) in first, whatever. Manipulate the encounters best you can.

And as far as magic goes - the inner circle (red) will hit friend or foe (generally, depending on spell). The outer circle (yellow, size changes based on Intelligence), will ONLY hit foes. With enough Int (and some getting into the proper place with your spellcaster), you'll be able to cast away without roasting your own party.

This game is amazing.

The best way I can describe it without going into huge detail is just saying this: This is Baldur's Gate 3.

Reviews have also said that this game is amazingly bug free (especially considering this is from Obsidian), has an outstanding story (without script errors of any sort), and is just tons of fun to play.

I can't even imagine playing ESO without mods. And the loading time is downright terrible at times, and I'm running it on a SSD drive. Oh, and the crashes since 1.6 launched.

Otherwise, not too much has changed since launch. Still a rather solid game with an enjoyable story and good mechanics. Make sure you grab the Imperial Edition (any release in the world, doesn't matter, all runs worldwide), and the Explorer Pack ($3-$4 via key sellers like G2A), and you'll be all set.
32  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Who is your cell provider? on: March 20, 2015, 02:04:29 AM
T-Mobile via a web only deal (which is a pay as you go plan).

$30 for 100 minutes, 'unlimited' LTE/4G data (5GB before they might slow down to 3G), and unlimited texts.

Only downside is limited coverage (I spend almost all of my time in a major metropolitan city, so no issue there so far), no insurance (seriously, it's not offered), you can't use any of T-Mobile's special deals like unlimited music streaming (doesn't count towards your data), and you have to buy the phone outright up front (but you can use any phone that they offer).

But for $30 a month plus tax...I sure as heck can't complain.

Cursive is dead as far as I'm concerned. It's not even taught in schools anymore (or so my boss at work as said, as his three kids have gone through school). I just wish doctors would realize this and stop doing it, mainly as they have piss poor at best handwriting skills, and cursive only makes it worse to read! I'm trying to avoid killing my patients thank you very much!
36  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Retail cashier preference: robot or buddy? on: February 27, 2015, 01:21:09 PM
As far as I'm concerned, people who pay with check need to have the checkbook taken from their hands and beaten over the head with it until they grab their debit card (which they have, as otherwise they wouldn't have a checkbook) and use that instead.

Checks need to be banned for anything other than paying monthly bills by mail.

Curious Destructor, I always assumed they train cashiers not to comment on what people are buying, do they? I don't mind it so much when they something like "Looks like you are making stew" but hate it when they say something like "You have a sweet tooth" when I am buying a ton of candy bars because they are on sale.

I would assume the general instruction would be to not comment at all and just get them in and out as fast as possible. Every chain is different it seems. Or it's just a more talkative employee.

"Does it work? No. Maybe it'll work tomorrow."
"Does it work? Still no. I'll give it another day."

I hate self-checkout. Hate hate hate hate hate.

Why?

Because the stores take that as a reason to remove actual cashiers who can do things TONS faster than the stupid scanner can. And baggers, too.

Unless I'm buying like 2 items or less, I always go into an actual cashier line, even if I have to wait a little bit longer.

Disclaimer: I work in a grocery store.

My backlog is so big and full of solid games I just see no reason to jump in without reviews these days.

I feel the exact same way. Unless it's from a developer you can 100% trust (and there's only a tiny handful in my book that fall into that) there's absolutely no point throwing your $60 into the wind hoping it's actually a good game.

Stop preordering anything. Wait for reviews. There will always be plenty of copies (especially digitally) to get if it's actually worth your time.
