For me it is cursive.  I am a working professional and I can't remember the last time I needed to write something over a paragraph in length in cursive.  I write quick notes to myself or others but nothing longer than a sentence.

Cursive is dead as far as I'm concerned. It's not even taught in schools anymore (or so my boss at work as said, as his three kids have gone through school). I just wish doctors would realize this and stop doing it, mainly as they have piss poor at best handwriting skills, and cursive only makes it worse to read! I'm trying to avoid killing my patients thank you very much!
4  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Retail cashier preference: robot or buddy? on: February 27, 2015, 01:21:09 PM
As far as I'm concerned, people who pay with check need to have the checkbook taken from their hands and beaten over the head with it until they grab their debit card (which they have, as otherwise they wouldn't have a checkbook) and use that instead.

Checks need to be banned for anything other than paying monthly bills by mail.

Quote from: Lee on February 26, 2015, 04:03:02 PM

Curious Destructor, I always assumed they train cashiers not to comment on what people are buying, do they? I don't mind it so much when they something like "Looks like you are making stew" but hate it when they say something like "You have a sweet tooth" when I am buying a ton of candy bars because they are on sale.

I would assume the general instruction would be to not comment at all and just get them in and out as fast as possible. Every chain is different it seems. Or it's just a more talkative employee.

Heard back from Squaretrade.  They'll need "2 to 5 days to evaluate" the extent of the damage.   Uh.  Ok.

"Does it work? No. Maybe it'll work tomorrow."
"Does it work? Still no. I'll give it another day."
"It still doesn't work. I'll give it just one more day. The damage looks all superficial anyway."

Sorry to hear about your, er, whoops though. Maybe it's time to go buy a Microsoft Surface from the Microsoft Store. You won't have an ordering problem at all unlike before! slywink

I hate self-checkout. Hate hate hate hate hate.

Why?

Because the stores take that as a reason to remove actual cashiers who can do things TONS faster than the stupid scanner can. And baggers, too.

Unless I'm buying like 2 items or less, I always go into an actual cashier line, even if I have to wait a little bit longer.

Disclaimer: I work in a grocery store.

I feel the exact same way. Unless it's from a developer you can 100% trust (and there's only a tiny handful in my book that fall into that) there's absolutely no point throwing your $60 into the wind hoping it's actually a good game.

Stop preordering anything. Wait for reviews. There will always be plenty of copies (especially digitally) to get if it's actually worth your time.

The Xenoblade Chronicles port requires the New 3DS.  I don't know whether that's a measure of the better processor or additional controls, but it's important enough that Nintendo is willing to risk disappointing a lot of people who had no earthly reason to research the issue.

Exactly. Why as a developer would you risk missing out on millions and millions of console owners by requiring the New New Really New 3DS...especially considering that your average consumer is a complete idiot?

It's obvious Nintendo gave the devs here a lot of money for this, but they won't do that for everyone. Would you want to take a chance on requiring a New 3DS console at this point when there's SO many of the 'old' ones out in the wild right now?

12  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Starbound on: February 04, 2015, 04:56:05 AM
The big difference is that Starbound is sci-fi based and Terraria is fantasy. And the mobile base that you have (as it grows, you can do some crazy things to it). And the races (each with their own ship designs and crafted items).

Yeah, the two games 'look' the same on the surface, but they're quite different as you play. Also, I've put in more hours into Starbound than Terraria for whatever reason.

Well worth it IMHO if you at all like the 'mining and crafting' aspect and such. Although it's ton more fun with friends.

The price difference between 3.5' and 2.5' drives are not that steep. And SSD drives are all 2.5 sized (which the console can use natively).

And does anyone need more than 2TB of console storage? Seriously, delete something.

Like I said about Tomb Raider, this is absolutely terrible for the gaming industry.

On the flip side...this also shows that Capcom is absolutely fucking broke. ALL THREE companies have bought exclusives now - Nintendo with Bayonetta 2, Microsoft with Dead Rising 3, and now Capcom with Street Fighter V.

AAAA gaming is fucking bankrupting the console industry as we know it. I'm saying it now - I think this is the last generation of consoles.

I really don't know what to think on this. This is a Big Thing if it truly is an exclusive, but as mentioned before I doubt it is. Although there seems to be some solid reasonings as it might be.

I dunno. We'll see once Capcom actually announces this (instead of screwing it up and posting it early).

Give me access to like 4 stations of my choosing (none of them are ESPN and none of them are the extended cable stations like HBO or Cinemax), along with the usual 'over the air' stations (ABC, NBC, etc), at a reasonable price, and I'll start paying for cable again.

Until that happens, good riddance.

I bought Dragon Age: Inquisition for way too little (yay for making Origin think that I'm in Mexico instead of the US by using a proxy, thus saving $25 on the 'digital collectors edition'), so I'm off playing that. I'd wish they'd patch it though - the 'cinema scenes' look so jumpy and low FPS.

Actually, a crossguard on a lightsaber makes complete sense.

Think of swordfighting. Okay, so the two of you clash up with your blades. All one person needs to do is shift their force downward and suddenly their blade is chopping off fingers if there's no crossguard to get into the way.

Frankly it's something that was needed for a while now on a Lightsaber - some kind of protection to the hand wielding the thing.

As for the trailer - it didn't say anything, it didn't show hardly anything, and it didn't tell anything about what to expect on the movie. Basically Disney went out and said, "WE'RE MAKING A STAR WARS MOVIE!!" for all the zero people who didn't already know. biggrin

4. No Clone Trooper armor was ever produced for the films.

It's become a joke how overreliant Lucas was on greenscreen and special effects over the course of the Prequel trilogy - virtually every set had some major greenscreen component, giving everything a slightly-too-clean sheen about it. But this might surprise you - there was never a single piece of actual Clone Trooper armor ever on-screen. Literally every time you see a Clone Trooper in armor, it's completely CGI - the only times any part of a Clone Trooper isn't ALL CGI is when their face appears, and any time you see a Clone Trooper with a helmet on, it's 100%.

To be fair, this probably had something to do with the original Stormtrooper Armor being notoriously uncomfortable to wear, see out of, breathe in, etc.

Quick question - I'm considering this for my eldest.  Since the kids invariably share games, I need to know how many separate save slots there are available.

My digital download version has 3. I'd assume that the cart version would be 3 as well (as games save to the memory card and not to the cart itself).

My Surface 3 (the piece of crap that it is with its shitty built in Maxwell wifi chip) is just my secondary computer if you will. It holds all my chat clients, Skype, and everything else I need. It sits underneath my gaming PC's monitor (or next to me when I'm on a console) and it gives me access to anything no matter what I'm doing.

This...is appaling: http://kotaku.com/ubisoft-has-published-a-handy-rundown-of-known-technica-1658926091

(entire article pasted)

Ubisoft has published a handy rundown of known technical issues with Assassin's Creed Unity as well as the status of fixes. Framerate's on the list for all platforms, with the following workaround offered pending more fixes: "If playing single player, we suggest that you disconnect from your internet connection (wifi or network cable). It could potentially improve frame rate."

So...in a game that all but DEMANDS multiplayer (especially to use the above hacking functions and treasure chest openings and everything else), Ubisoft suggests that you turn off the internet to try to get a boosted FPS?

Fuck. I'm glad I didn't buy this crap at launch.

Why are you guys buying the premium companion app anyway? You're basically telling Ubisoft that it's totally fine for them to shove these fucking blue chests in our faces. I'm not even going to install the base companion app, and I hate that these blue chests are everywhere despite not being part of the game. They might as well have had huge ads for their app hanging from the Notre Dame.

THANK YOU. Finally, somebody with some damn sense.

Ubisoft has the gall to embargo a review of a game they KNOW is rife with problems until 12 hours AFTER the launch (and here the latest Dragon Age game had its review come out a WEEK early), and now you're paying to open a fucking treasure chest that's right in front of you?

I wonder why I've gotten tired of the series, and it's the above that explains it well. Companion app after companion app where they just want all your personal information to do stuff you would've been able to do back in the golden age of gaming for free (and without installing said app).

I got this game for PC yesterday and played it until I reached the second "bonfire". It seems very promising so far. Lots of people are talking about constant crashes and instability, but I haven't seen anything of the sort. On the other hand, my PC is pretty powerful, enough to run this game at a stable 60 fps on very high detail.

I've heard that this is due to some brand new 'unbreakable' DRM (at least according to a /. article). While it apparently has stopped the 'hackers' (after 3 days anyway), it's causing a lot of system instability in general to a lot of people.

Yeah, I've seen that too. Definitely a good thing.

Grimrock 2 is a huge improvement over the original...which honestly is really hard to do because I enjoyed the hell out of Grimrock 1. If you even remotely love the classic Dungeon Masters, Eye of the Beholders, or just want to play a beautifully remastered 'classic game', buy this now.
