"From the director of Watchmen and 300" Shit, I'm in. Not sure I could talk the wife into going to see it, though. Not even going to try to talk her into it.

A few things to get you up to date, Hetz Hepcat is now called HEpC due to an unfortunate episode in mexico and the following diseases. Most of the people here are bots under the control of the MasterBot Ceekey. If he ever learns your true name, he will have complete power over your soul. PR-Gamer is dangerous, since he's always looking for "extra's" in his horror movies... No-one has ever reported back. ATB went lettuce for a few years, but has since experienced the second coming and is now back to default mode. OO was taken down by eco-terrorists, or so they claim, which caused a serious influx of OO agents here, sent to investigate how to make a frontpage. oh, and everyone here is a bunch of pussies... Did I miss anything?

Here's what we paid out in the past couple of years
Bath gut and rebuild
Around 10k for around 10x8 foot bath, gutted, new fixtures. Would have been cheaper by close to 750, but teh wife likes a couple of items in every job that are made from 24k unobtainium.
Roof rip and replace
7500 for a smallish split-level. Tear off 2 layers of shingles, replace a lot of decking.
Hot air furnace
3600 for a high efficiency unit. Vents through pvc blowhole in side of house.
Foundation repair
call it a 1000, due to some contracted work.
That puts us over 22k, plus needs a new kitchen, disposal leaks, wiring needs fixed, paint paper, new rugs, insulating....
I need a drink.

I have had sprint for awhile and found out that the house was in a cellphone black hole - a combo of being on the downslope of a hill and having a 1870's stone church between my house and the closest cell tower. I called Sprint up and they sent me a miniature tower that plugs into my router. Problem solved, with no hassles.

From what somebody told me thirdhand, that's why Comcast prices its internet so high. They can't separate all of the content from the data. Enjoy!

I'm tempted to get a Rondo LP Custom copy (as the real thing will be out of my financial range for some time to come) - but usually when I buy inexpensive guitars, they just end up collecting dust.
This one may change your mind. The workmanship is very good on these.

Now's the time of year when we are inundated with warnings about "black ice". Oh yeah, the white ice is so much safer and has sooooooo much more traction. Where is our ice MLK when we need him?

I really don't give a crap what I get. It's always clothing from the wife and m-i-l and nothing from the kids. Even if I have a cheap and obvious want (here ******, it's a roller bridge for my electric guitar and it's only $30!) if it doesn't seem practical to teh wife, I'm not getting it. But this year, I'm at least giving gifts that don't suck and I'm happy about that.

I'll throw Subaru into the mix, although it seems like the resale prices are pretty high on them. I've had more people tell me I bought the right car (since I bought mine) than any other make I've owned.

If you can get one of those styrofoam coolers that perishable medicine comes in, you can use that and those plastic cold packs that are used instead of ice. Do you know anyone that works in a hospital? They could get the cooler and the coldpacks for nothing. If your friend has a porch where it can be left, you could overnight it with a signature waiver, so the shipper can just leave it for him. If you want to ship it more cheaply, you can go the priority mail route and it will get there in 2 or 3 days. I don't think that you need to go the dry ice route if you can get the other stuff.
My son took human growth hormones for 12 years and that's how they packed it.
<edit> Come to think of it, if it's frozen to begin with, you wouldn't need to overnight it either. Best wishes for your friend and hopefully the new year will be kinder to him.

Bought this a couple of days ago. Doesn't have the gadgets that you all require, but I didn't have much to put down and a 10 year old trade-in. Decent power in city driving, lots of backseat legroom and the boxer engine has zero vibration at idle. Honestly, I've never had a car that was this vibrationless at a stoplight. Haven't tested the awd yet, but Sunday promises to be messy.

To tell you the truth, the girl and I who were denleaders never followed the recommended activities because they were lame. It took a lot of work on our part, but we came up with things like mousetrap catapults, had the kids make huge spiders for Halloween lawn decorations out of trashbags and newspapers and stuff like that. Food pyramids are ok and all, but our format was: Pledge of allegiance check books Activity for the meeting Game Snack Dismissal Two things keep the parents involved. One, every week we had a snack and a drink and all the parents took turns. Two, our crafts were things like leatherwork, and other activities, like building tool caddies for father's day that required a parent's assistance. (I was always a little ambitious) Another philosophy we had was, if there was a younger sibling, they could participate too. If I had to make up extra kits for whatever we were doing that night, it was ok. It didn't hurt that Carol was very creative. In one meeting we made t-shirts using Japanese fishpainting techniques. If I haaaddd to work on food pyramids, I would have a copy of the zombie food pyramid handy too.

Cub Scouts is kind of like training camp for Boy Scouts, which is when the 'no parents' effect kicks in. Your description sounds like my memory of Boy Scouts, which was age 12+ I think.
I don't know any adult able to handle 15 8-year-old boys (the size of my son's den ) on an overnight camping trip, even with an assistant den leader.
True that. I didnt do the cub scout thing. Maybe he can try again at age 12ish.. I remember cub scouts as something done in a living room. No camping. Mothers involved. Pinewood derby type stuff. Crafts. Boy Scouts at age 11 or 12 you then get camping, neighborhood events and we even did rehab work in the national forest. Scout camp in the mountains for a week every year. Belonging to an active Boy Scout troop is something I would think almost every boy would enjoy and learn from. Correct. Cubbies is arts and crafts and parental involvement. Ideally, the activities are training for the more involved Scout stuff. When I was running my den, we made trailmix for and activity. Everyone brought in something and we mixed it up. I talked about nutrition, we went and played ship to shore and then had the trailmix as a snack. In Boy Scouts, it ramps up to them cooking their own meals. Couple of weekends ago, we had dutch oven chicken parm, stew, apple cobbler and "banana splits". Oh, yeah, archery and .22 rifles are real big in our troop too.
