Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Another !#@#!@ reason to hate Steam (Civ 5)

Imagine my delight when I was in Walmart today and saw Civ 5 on the rack three days early.
Imagine how pissed off I got when I got home, installed it, and Steam wouldn't let me start it because it's before the release date?
To hell with this garbage. If I buy it at a store and take it home I should be able to play the game, PERIOD. Last Steam game I ever buy.

Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / My new gay bar
|
on: August 26, 2010, 01:11:58 AM
|
|
So, the Muslim investors championing the construction of the new mosque near Ground Zero claim it's all about strengthening the relationship between the Muslim and non-Muslim world.
As an American, I believe they have every right to build the mosque - after all, if they buy the land and they follow the law - who can stop them?
Which is, why, in the spirit of outreach, I've decided to do the same thing.
I'm announcing tonight, that I am planning to build and open the first gay bar that caters not only to the west, but also Islamic gay men. To best express my sincere desire for dialogue, the bar will be situated next to the mosque Park51, in an available commercial space.
This is not a joke. I've already spoken to a number of investors, who have pledged their support in this bipartisan bid for understanding and tolerance.
As you know, the Muslim faith doesn't look kindly upon homosexuality, which is why I'm building this bar. It is an effort to break down barriers and reduce deadly homophobia in the Islamic world.
The goal, however, is not simply to open a typical gay bar, but one friendly to men of Islamic faith. An entire floor, for example, will feature non-alcoholic drinks, since booze is forbidden by the faith. The bar will be open all day and night, to accommodate men who would rather keep their sexuality under wraps - but still want to dance.
Bottom line: I hope that the mosque owners will be as open to the bar, as I am to the new mosque. After all, the belief driving them to open up their center near Ground Zero, is no different than mine.
My place, however, will have better music.

Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Sex offenders can be kept in prison
|
on: June 28, 2010, 07:04:49 PM
|
Late to the party, but has anyone actually ever seen how one of these places is run?
There are countless sex offenders out there, but the ones deemed not fit to return to society are placed in a 'civil commitment center' for treatment, which if they actually do it takes around 5 years. During those 5 years, they are living the life off your tax dollars. They have air conditioning, directv, free medical and dental (well not free, since you're paying for it) have access to all kinds of classes like TABE, GED, CDL, and computer programming, so when they get out they have mastered a skill. They wear civilian clothes and have free roam of their little paradise city. They have giant LCD tv's in every single dorm (usually 2), playstation 3's and xbox 360's, incoming and outgoing phone lines, psp and xbox 'multiplayer sessions' where they play against eachother in tournaments, a huge gym, a chapel, pool tables, a volleyball and basketball court. It's almost like a Hilton! For every "resident" housed, we are paying around $37,000 annually to hold them. And that's just the tip of the iceberg..
So yeah I agree it's good we can detain or commit these guys (sexually violent predators) but if you saw the way these kinds of places are run courtesy of your tax dollar, it'd make you sick.. you can rape and torture a 5 year old kid, and end up in a place like that for the rest of your life, should you refuse 'treatment'.
My solution? Run the commitment centers like a regular prison. At least in Florida, they have basic tv (4,7,10) they have NO air conditioning, have to wear uniforms and live in a very disciplined environment. That'd save the tax payers a lot of money if we ran them the same way.
Do you have any evidence proving any are actually run as you describe?

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Ship Simulator EXTREME!

Does that Greenpeace thing mean I can park my boats in front of oil freighters and cause accidents? Or perhaps picket on a boat while watching helplessly as Japanese whalers kill whales?
I bought the first one on a big sale. Wasn't all that good... if you think about how Flight sims abstract land, but realize that a boating game will take place 90% of the time over wide expanses of water... well... you get the point.
My biggest beef is the lack of a "free sail" option like Flight simulator. I should be able to disembark at Marseille and get a reasonably accurate Mediterranean experience as I sail to Algeria. But it just isn't like that at all. You have either close to Marseille (not even the whole area around the city) or open sea.
Bael
Exactly. Saw this criticism made of the last version of the game. Guess the developers didn't care too much.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Steam--your cd key is already in use
|
on: March 11, 2010, 09:05:44 PM

So, I go to Best Buy and pick up Napoleon Total War. Get it home. Try to install it. Get error message telling me this CD key has already been used.
Doublecheck my typing. Try it again. Same thing. ****.
Take game and receipt. Go back to Best Buy. Ask for another copy of NTW. Get told it's not their problem, and that I need to email Steam support.
Which I have. Three times, over the last four days. No responses.
Escalate at Best Buy, eventually get phone call from local DM..."You have to contact Steam support."
What's Steam's rep in handling these situations? Am I SOL and out $43?

http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/01/13/haiti.pat.robertson/index.htmlGuess they shouldn't have sworn that pact with Satan, huh? Seriously, is there anyone in this country stupid enough to believe this senile old a*****e's rants at this point? Wait, this is America, 2010. Don't answer that. Seriously, though, I'd love to see him say that to the faces of the poor suffering people he's talking about. Oh wait, that's right, it's easier to be a moron in your TV studio. F**k you, Pat Robertson.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / San Andreas (PC) camera control--can anyone help?
|

I really, really want to play this...but I find the camera is all over the place. Having trouble controlling my view either driving or on foot.
Is there any way to make the camera behave a little more--any setup that'll make it be like it was in Vice City, for example?

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Thank you to a person who helped a scared teenage girl 25 years ago
|
on: June 25, 2009, 09:11:49 PM
|
|
As a teenager, I used to like to go into Manhattan on the weekends--I'd take my dad's monthly railroad ticket and explore the city.
One weekend, i went in, and was about to cross the street at the corner of 7th Avenue and 34th Street when I just took a wrong step, and tripped backwards. Before I knew it, i heard a loud crack, and then I screamed in pain and fell to the ground, because the crack was my ankle breaking in two places.
I was 15 years old. Out of my mind with pain. Screaming and crying. And spent a good minute or so on the ground like that as people walked briskly by, no one wanting to help.
Until I heard a woman's voice, right next to me, screaming for police. She stayed with me and comforted me, through the police and an ambulance coming for me. Told me everything would be fine. Stayed there when other strangers just walked on by.
As they were about to load my stretcher into the ambulance, I looked up, to thank her...but she was gone.
In the ambulance, as we were on our way, one of the paramedics asked if I'd known the woman who'd been my guardian angel in my hour of need. When I told him I didn't, he told me he did, and he told me who she was.
Over the years I'd thought a number of times about contacting her. To thank her. Even if she didn't remember me. But for whatever reason, I put it off, and hadn't thought about it in years...
Until I got home a little while ago and saw the headlines on Yahoo.
Rest in peace, Farrah Fawcett. And thank yiou for protecting a scared, hurting girl when she needed it. I just wish I'd said it to you while you were alive.
