Yeah, I'll still go see it no matter what.

Especially if there's another Milla shower scene  slywink
1842  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / New Resident Evil movie trailer on: July 07, 2004, 05:15:14 AM
Stumbled across this tonight while looking up something on Yahoo, but here's a new trailer for Resident Evil: Apocolypse.

I went to the first one expecting crap and was pleasantly suprised, but now that I'm expecting a decent movie - I'm scared it'll be crap.

Actually I think it's got Toby, Kirstin and Alfred Molina doing their voices.
1844  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Font Change on: June 16, 2004, 07:01:30 PM
Changed the Default font for the site to a different sans-serif to see if that makes it a little easier to read.

Lemme know if you like / dislike.

1845  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Game Discussion: Full Spectrum Warrior [Xbox] on: June 04, 2004, 04:34:29 AM
Guess I'm in the minority.  Picked it and Riddick up last night but got irritated / bored with FSW after the first few hours.  I'll play it some more this weekend to give it another chance, but here's my initial list of complaints.

1. Map areas seem small so far. This isn't something you can see in-game, you just reach an invisible wall. This is most frustrating in the first few levels I've played where mission objectives are also near these invisible walls. Several times I spent the time and energy to position a fireteam to run around the back of a building and outflank some enemy only to find that the invisible walls prevented me from going behind the building.

2. The oversimplification that if you're behind a corner or behind a solid piece of cover, then you're invincible. If I can see flesh, I should be able to shoot it.

3. Movement command system  / camera - the fact that you can't pull the camera out or reposition it to get a better view is pretty frustrating at times. Trying to move your fireteam further down a wall is near impossible w/o guessing where you're moving them too, and if your view get's obscured by a bush or something - you're just screwed until you move your fireteam .

Still the game does have some really cool features. Obviously the graphics are very nice, and I think the 3d Fog of War view was a really awesome innovation. So I'm hoping that my 2nd chance of playing it for an extended time will prove more enjoyable. Otherwise this will one will be going back really soon.
1846  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Full Spectrum Warrior Reviewed by IGN! :) on: June 01, 2004, 07:58:08 PM
Yeah I regret that while at E3 I never got a chance to swing by and try out Full Spectrum.

So now I just got back from a quick trip to EB where I just plopped down my $100 to pre-order Riddick and Full Spectrum. God man, two gorgeous games being released on the same day, and both with great early reviews. I doubt I'll get any sleep this week.

Was tempted to place an order for Malice too, but this whole quiet release scares me. No E3 showing, No early reviews, all these delays and publisher swapping all just scream that this game is gonna bomb. Which is too bad, cuz I was interested in it.

But anyways back to the topic. I'll be down for some multiplay action too, but considering the IGN review stating that the 45 minute training tutorial is absolutely necessary first, it might be a week or so before i've had enough time with the game to be ready for an online match.

But I do agree with you AgtFox, I'm more of an action guy. So I'm worried that I'll be too seperated from the action in FSW to find it really engaging. Pretty as hell though.

The white background makes the site harder to read.
Hmmm - where are you seeing a white background? Cuz We should have all the text on the site with a silver/gray background.

Just point me in the right direction and I'll fix it.

Its a known issue
/raises hand. Uhh Mr. Burke? How can something that was done intentionally be called a 'known issue'?

For the initial launch - we originally had planned on launching a 1024x768 site, but after looking through the web server logs - we could see that there were still a large number of users who view the site at 800x600. So we discussed it and decided that the intial launch should try and support the maximum amount of users possible.

Quote from: "Knightshade Dragon"
and we are working on a second version at 1024x768 as well as a scalable one that fits almost any resolution.
We will have another version of the site formatted for 1024 x 768 this summer (now whether that's something that will auto-select for you or if you'll need to choose that size format via a user preference isn't something I've figured out yet). However - I wouldn't count on a "scalable one that fits almost any resolution" - that would be a fairly easy item to do if we were still primarily text based, however with the new emphasis going on a much more graphical look - that is a very difficult task to do well (especially if you don't want to have miles of empty space surrounding graphical items on the page when run at ultra-high resolutions). That's not to say it's not something that is going to be looked into, just don't want you to have unrealistic expectations.

Quote from: "DiamondDecision"

Now, if you can kill the high-intensity, 3-foot-by-2-foot "CG" at the top of the page, life would be good. ;-)
;-) yes, one of the 'future features' would allow a bit of site customization, so you could have some other options besides that current logo.

Quote from: "Knightshade Dragon"
expect the site to switch back from E3 mode shortly.
I would anticipate that sometime this week it will convert back (I'm thinking Thursday - mainly because I'm trying to play catch up with my real job and family after spending last week at E3). Plus as Ron said, there is still a large number of E3 post-writing that is still being completed.

You might also want to consider sticking author names up there somewhere, but I don't need to see that kind of stuff.
Yeah I had that in my mind as well. We were kind of thinking of getting away from all the staff tags in the news as a means of reigning some of that in, but I agree that there's a bit of value in listing who wrote something (if for no other reason than to know who to blame slywink ), so it'll probably be slipped in a very small font size

Quote from: "Gedd"
One other little nitpick, and this is more me being anal...on the main news page listing, my personal preference would be to have the system icons appear to the right of the titles instead of the left.  There's something oddly disconcerting about not having the titles of the new articles lining up.
I go back and forth on that one as well. On one hand I would like for titles to line up, but on the other hand it seems like having the system icons first makes it easier to scan the page for relevant system info (at least until we launch filters later this year) Plus if I moved them to the end - you have to worry about those fun little times when just the system images wrap and makes it look a little odd.

I'm not happy with the layouts yet, so I will keep experimenting.

Quote from: "Gedd"
Ack, one other little nitpick...serifed fonts should really be avoided on web sites.  The rule I always heard was you use serif fonts for print stuff, sans serif for screen.  There's actual usability studies out there that verify it, but I'd have to dig to find them. slambie will back me up on this (assuming she sees this post smile).
Laff - I've actually read a bunch of those books too. If you notice we do actually use Sans Serif for all text except in the headlines (which most usability and design books I've read have recommended that Serif fonts are more readable for headlines -- the exact opposite of print). So the site should be positioned for much easier readability. Once I get out of code-crunch time, I'd like to spend some time revisiting the column-lengths and word/letter spacing to even further increase the readability of the site.
1850  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Couple of things on: May 16, 2004, 05:35:01 PM
Correct - we all still have a bunch of stuff to finish writing up. We all survived on a minimal amount of sleep this last week to try and write stuff up while we were at E3, now we'll finish that up, and I'll integrate that information into the Game Info pages.

As for the news system - yes the old news system will be coming back online in the near future, however I wouldn't count on it being there for too much longer. We're going to re-discuss and make some modifications to the new news system before we launch it again.

Probably not the best time to ask for this stuff since you guys are at E3, but is there any chance you could put a date/time stamp on the main news page?  It's kind of hard to tell what's new without it.  You could probably throw them in on the individual news posts as well.

Also, it appears that HTML isn't working in the news posts:
That's actually something I wanted to have on the articles when we left, but I just ran out of time to implement it. I agree that I like to see when things were posted as well.

As for that news article - I had that reporter fix it that same morning afte seeing your post. HTML does work - it's just that I gave them all a WYSIWYG editor to enter in their news articles. Someone just litterally typed in the <a href tags into the WYSIWYG so it displayed as text rather than as a link.

Simple mistake.

But thanks for pointing it out, I would have hated to have that showing up all FUBAR like that all day.

Well, this is my first post here at the new Console Gold. I've been a longtime lurker, sometime poster over at the Gone Gold forums. I just have couple suggestions/comments/complaints.

Thanks for speaking up - i do appreciate comments.

Quote from: "namstalo"
First is, having the link to a news article lead to just that one artice seems like you are trying to inflate your page views. Heck, why not have news on the front page like nearly every other news page.
The E3 news thing was an experiment with a custom News system rather than the old one we've been using. The advantage was that it would make updating our site a lot faster which is a nice thing when you're sharing a wireless access point with 100 other people. Putting each article on a unique page was intended to have two benefits

1. It was supposed to allow reporters room to provide a lot more information in the news articles. I.e. Put up a full story rather than just a quick paragraph.

2. It was supposed to make it easier for readers to scan the generic news page and only click on the items that were of interest to them. (i.e. so you wouldn't have to scan over multiple  paragraphs of info about the new MP2 if all you wanted was to get to that Cliffy B Interview.

As for news on the front page. One of the main goals of the redesign that launched several weeks back was to help people see that we're more than just a 'news site'. So that main page is now more of a menu of all that's new or interesting on the site as well as links to all the most recent headlines. We still have a full news page and that will still be given a lot of attention. We just didn't want it to be the only thing people noticed.

Quote from: "namstalo"
Second, the E3 format is horrible. The forum link leading to directly to the E3 forum is annoying at best.
Sorry you didn't like it. I did the best with what graphics I had available at launch time. The thought behind changing the forum link was that during E3 - that would be the forum area where most discussion would be going. Considering how little traffic it got, it seems that was mistake. One we'll learn from and not repeat next year.

Quote from: "namstalo"
Third is the response to a post by ATB about the booth babe subject
I'll leave this for the forum mods to handle. I trust their judgement on how to handle the forum community. I'm just a coder.
Quote from: "namstalo"
Finally, I hope the lack of a Gone Gold link is due to the E3 format and will be there soon. There is a link to Console Gold there, so it seems fitting to return the favor.
I believe that Ron had mentioned that he was looking into this for the forums. But unfortunately I don't know his status on that.

Quote from: "namstalo"
Otherwise, it's good to see CS becoming something more. Good luck to you guys.

Okay off to bed for me.

Could you implement a next/previous for the screen shots. I love the thumbnail view, but once I click on one I would like to be able to just hit next to see the rest.

Thanks.  smile
FYI - I have been doing some experimentation on this. But still haven't found a solution that I'm really happy with. The easiest solution for me would be to handle with a little bit of javascript, but that would mean breakage for people using alternative devices (such as I do when I access the site via my pda/phone) or for people who have disabled JS. I have a few server side-side methods but none that feel elegant yet.

I will make it happen though. Just a matter of time.

I mean really guys, the latest shots of Diana Kaufman being all pixelated? This is the babe we collectively drool over. I'll admit that the jaw-dropper of her and the blonde from yesterday was great, but that body deserves better care! Do her justice! Do her for justice if the situation warrants! Do her for me! For me!!!!

Yeah that one is my bad.

My digital camera was out of juice - so I thought I'd try and use my digital video camera to grab some footage. Unfortunately I couldn't find a way to save the image any bigger than 320 x 240, and the screenshot system I built resizes all images to 640 x 480 - which is what caused the pixelation.

Anyone got any tips on how to save the video footage at a better resolution as a still image? It's a new Sony HCDR. The software that comes with it is absolutely the most confusing and un-intuitive crap I've ever seen, so I was forced to use Windows Movie Maker.

I probably should have deleted it, but c'mon -- even pixelated that's a great shot - just for the content slywink

Yes they are digital versions but they are supposed to include all of the normal print edition plus enhanced content.

Use this: to get the one year digital sub to Electronic Gaming Monthly.

Use this: to get the one year digital sub to Computer Gaming World.

Haven't seen any good print magazine free deals since the free XBN sub ran out a few days ago.[/url]
Super Cool!!!

I got one of those Tablet PC's so these are just as good as the print version for me.

Thanks for the tip!!

Ditto for me, But I'm even worse. If I can't run over pedestrians I get really, really annoyed.

Sick? Maybe.

But I play games to do things I can't do in real life.

Should be taken care of now.

Hey!  First of all, I think that the new site and the forums look great.
What sort of machine/OS is this all running on?
What web server?
What database for the forums?

Thanks for the compliment. Here's the short answers.
It's a LAMP box. (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP). Personally I would have preferred a different DB with stored procedure support, but can't beat the price of free.I coded the new site in XHTML and used CSS for all presentation elements (so all presentational graphics are seperated from content). It'll make things much easier to deal with going forward. The forums are just a standard install of PHPBB.

Quote from: "Balshazaar"
Finally, my one and only suggestion:  It would be great to have a link on the forum header back to the main page of consolegold -- not to the main page of the forums, but to the news/info/review page.
. I completly agree, unfortunately I only deal w/ the code on the main site and passed off the forums to Ron. I messaged him a couple times with this request today so i'd expect something to be implemented fairly soon.

Good Luck with the site. Feel free to ask questions anytime.

Just thought of something that I am certain this BBsystem supports, skins. Are you going to create some and then enable them? A friend of mine runs a board with this software and he's got skins so we can each view the board in a manner we choose. Just a thought.

Custom Skins are definetely in the future (and not just for the forums)
