841  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: National Novel Writing Month 2010 on: November 11, 2010, 03:51:27 PM
Just  got a list of revisions from my (hopefully) new publisher yesterday morning. Since then I have cranked out 1,500 words. I have about 4K more to add before Monday. Sure it's nanowrimo numbers but it is work.
842  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: National Novel Writing Month 2010 on: November 10, 2010, 03:51:14 AM
I have a measly 3K for the month. Even though I had to bow out of nanowrimo, this is pretty pathetic for me. I wrote the first 10K of my last book in 2 days. Then it took me 8 months to finish the rest.  icon_eek

I just saw the second episode and it was fantastic. It had just about every element that makes a good zombie tale.

That was one intense but LOOOOONG book.

I have a massive 0 words written so far! I had to give in before the month started. I was all excited to get started and then the completely unexpected hit my writing career. I can't say what it is just yet except that it is a trilogy of books that will compliment my other works AND it will be in much much wider distribution. I am on pins and needles right now waiting on the final word. ARGH!

It has to be a technophobe thing. ebooks are almost pure profit. It it was a money grab they would have priced the ebook at $20 like Follet's new book. I suspect she is "thinking of the fans" and wants them to have real books. Thanks, Harriet.  retard

Picked up my copy after work. This book is hoooge. 850+ pages of smallish print.

I have been reading TWOT books since the first one back in 1990 or so. Brandon Sanderson has done a fantastic job of finishing the job Jordan could not.

There it is and it looks sweet. But ouch, it weighs almost a lb.

I'm still sticking with my kindle.  Tongue

Is a color eink screen really that exciting to folks? I guess for reading graphic novels it would be pretty slick. Actually, if the screen was fast enough that would be fantastic.

But when I pick up a book to read they are normally plain old black text on a white page which is why the Kindle is, to me, the perfect reader. I purchased an iPad a few months ago and after reading on it for a month, went back to the kindle. You just can't read the thing in any kind of bright light and it is too heavy to read in bed.

853  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: National Novel Writing Month 2010 on: October 26, 2010, 06:59:25 PM
I have it down to two books but I'm not sure which one to do.

Stupid Zombies - A Tale of Horror, Prozac, and the Retarded Undead

Mitzle and Fode's Big Ass Galactic Adventure

I imagine I will just start writing one of them on Nov. 1st but I honestly can't decide which one to do just yet. But I'm pumped! I have not written anything this month in preparation.

So if ya'll want to keep word counts, and updates on this thread, I will try to do the same.
854  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / National Novel Writing Month 2010 on: October 26, 2010, 05:39:26 PM
National Novel Writing Month is fast approaching. NaNoWriMo, as it is called, is a chance to attempt to write an entire book in a month. It has to be at least 50K words and there is a website where you can upload your work and it keeps track of your count.

This is the first year I have had a chance to participate. Are others thinking of doing it?
855  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Amazon Kindle: Kindle 3! on: October 22, 2010, 04:44:29 PM
It really is the best device I have tried. I had a Kindle 2 and it was great but a bit bulky. The iPad is just too cumbersome to read on and if there is any light shining on the screen, forget about reading.

The Kindle 3, on the other hand, is light, thin and you can read it just about everywhere. It looks amazing in daylight.

Books are cheaper too. In fact (pardon my shameless plug) but you can pick up one of my books The Zombie Wilson Diaries for a mere $2.39 right now while it is on sale. It's the most fun you can have with a corpse in a coconut bra.

<Shameless plug mode off>

I like the lighted case but it gets hard to read at the bottom of the page. Others may have pointed this out.

What a great looking netbook. Sort of defeats half the purpose of a smaller lighter machine when it is priced at a grand. Ouch. The tear down pics were amazing.

I'm happy with my MBP. Best computer I have owned in the last 20 years. But that 13" MBA is oh so sexseh.

Finally finished Dragon Factory and now I too am anxiously awaiting the next Ledger novel in the series.  With the way Dragon Factory ended I'm really anxious for the next story.

I was almost as mad as Ledger and was shocked at what happened.  It really says something about the author when you become so involved with the characters that when something happens you feel impacted as well.  I feel as if I too want to go on Joe's next mission.   mad  And I bet Bunny and Top will be right there with him, just as desperate for blood.  Perhaps with Church/Deacon as well.   ninja2

I got a chance to hang out with Maberry a few weeks ago at a convention. We were on a 'zombie panel' with a bunch of other authors. Before it started I shot the breeze with him and it sounds like he has big plans for Ledger. More books, and (gasp) a possible TV show. He also has an epic zombie book due next year that has already been optioned for film.

He was very cool and down to earth. He walked with a cane and explained he had blown out his knee during a Judo match.

862  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: iPad and productivity on: October 20, 2010, 03:38:09 PM
I was on a plane back from a horror convention last month. The gauntlet had been thrown at dinner the night before. Write a zombie story that involved a time traveling chair. (See what horror writers talk about while boozing it up?) Anyway, my laptop was just about dead so I powered through a 1,100 word story on my iPad using the screen keyboard. It was painful! It seemed like every third letter was mistyped.

Playing games, reading email, and surfing the web. That is what the ipad was designed for.

I have not tried the keyboard that attaches to the ipad. It's clever but pricey.

I purchased the first game back in July. I played it for 30 minutes, got bored and forgot about it. Well yesterday I saw it sitting forlornly on my PS3 drive and decided to have a go. Whatever did not click the first time fell into place with a resounding clang. I played that game for 4 hours straight. Broke to eat and played another hour. I really love the hack and slash, moar loot, next level, just one more quest! feel of the game. Most of the humor is good although some of it barely got a chuckle. The over the top voice work really makes me laugh.

I'm sure I'm in for the sequel.

I was really excited about this game until I read the 6 hour game time. Hmm, $10 an hour. I think I can see a movie cheaper than that.

The first Zombie Convention is being held in Seattle over Halloween weekend. Anyone else planning on attending? I work about 5 minutes from Seattle Center. I think this is going to be incredible!

Check out some of these guests:

George Romero
Bruce Campbell
Max Brooks
Ted Raimi
SG Brown
Chuck Palahniuk
Malcolm McDowell

And tons of other people including me! With any luck I will get photos with my zombie wilson ball. It has become a hit at the cons I have attended.

My first book signing is that Friday at 4:00 PM in the exhibition center. I'll have copies of all 3 novels but the main one is The Zombie Wilson Diaries. That doesn't mean you have to buy a book. Just stop by and say you are a GG'er. I will have some cool swag for friends.

Amazon is selling Fall of Giants at $19.60 for the hardcover and $19.99 for the Kindle. The Kindle version is more expensive than the hardcover.  crybaby

WOW! That is just plain ridonkulous. I'm out. Both HB and Kindle version. I love some Follett but I won't support that publisher's greed. Ken won't see any more of the money if the book is $10 or $20. Trust me on that one.

EDIT: It has 53 - 1 star reviews, everyone of them cites the price. OUCH! Yet the Kindle version is #7 in sales.

I was having trouble getting into the game for some reason, then this weekend it 'clicked' and I played a single game for hours and hours. I started a standard game, as I understand it, from this thread, epic is really slow. I can deal with that but does anyone have an estimate on how long a game can run (hours) at this level on say a large map?

I concur on the intro video. I am so sick of watching it. Show me an hourglass, dancing pink bunny, anything but the same 15 seconds over and over.

So there I was at Target, minding my own business, shopping for cleaning stuff, when I happened across the electronics section of the store. And lo it beckoned to me, a dark grey encased wonder. A device I said I would not purchase because I now had an ipad and would read books upon it's gorgeous display - while working out my forearm muscles.

But fate, ah, you changer of tunes. Twas you that did me in. Not the fact that I am a gadget junkie.

I came home with a wifi only version.

So yeah. This thing is sweet. I love reading on it. I had a Kindle 2 for over a year and never regretted the purchase. The first two books I loaded were Mustaine and Brandon Sanderson's new door stopper The Way of Kings.

I attended Horror Realm in Pittsburg last week. As you can see, my Zombie-Wilson ball gets around.

Ashley Williams from The Human Centipede. She played the middle (eww).

Jonathan Maberry - Author of Patient Zero, Dragon Factory, and a new zombie book called Rot and Ruin.

Me with Rhiannon Frater. She helped me with the editing on ZWD and is one of my biggest fans (so she claims). She recently signed a huge 3 book deal with TOR.

Got my zombie on! We shot a commercial for my publisher. About a dozen writers dressed up as zombies. It was good goofy fun.

Yay! Thanks for buying my book. I hope you get a laugh out of my little contribution to the genre.

I liked Raptorman's new one. I know some felt it was more of the same but I dig his stark journal style. It feels so real. I have exchanged a few emails with him and he seems like a genuinely nice guy.

I'll be at Horror Realm in Pittsburgh next week promoting my zombie books. I even get to sit on a panel with Jonathan Mayberry. What a hoot that will be!

Oh while I have a captive audience, probably owing to the amazing picture below, I have a new ebook only short novel coming out in the next few days. It will be $1.99 on all digital platforms. Here is the cover:

879  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Among the Living: Revised and Expanded Edition is done on: August 26, 2010, 01:11:18 AM
Hi All,

My first book, Among the Living: A Zombie Novel, just went through a huge overhaul. I spent a month rewriting it and then it went to a professional editor. The first version was not proofed as it was supposed to be and it went to press in very poor shape. Back when it was released I know a number of you purchased it. If you did, please message me and I will send you a new version. It is only the PDF version but I will feel a hell of a lot better knowing that you got your money's worth. The kindle version has been submitted and as soon as it is approved it will replace the old one. You can refresh the book to get the latest.

I've been trying to come up with a way to help out GT. I was going to offer a contest but I think I have a better idea. If you donate money to help fund the new server, let me know and I will give you a free copy of either Among the Living or The Zombie Wilson Diaries. I know it's not much, a token, but I do spend a lot of time here even though I don't post much.

This has been a great last year. My books have sold a lot and ATL is even headed to stores as part of a deal my publisher Library of the Living Dead Books has worked out with BN and Borders. I have three books out and I'm signed for a few more. I had a lot of help from GT last year so I hope that I can give back a little with this little offering.

880  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Elemental: War of Magic on: August 26, 2010, 12:52:20 AM
I got the game on Monday and pretty much spent all day playing it. Yeah it had problems, the UI is ... weird. I mean it tells you everything you need to know but the count down timers are sort of distracting as things happen during turns. Also the research happens too fast for me. It's about every other turn that you get a breakthrough then it is a scramble to figure out what to put your advancement into. It locked up a lot and crashed a good bit. I played several games to about the 300 turn mark as I learned it.

All that being said, this game is really freaking addictive. I can't wait for the weekend so I can give the new version a test drive. There sure is a lot of potential.

One other thing. There is no such thing as bad publicity.  Tongue
