I finished off these books over the last few weeks. I like this thread but I often forget to post in it. I have been in the mood for 'bizarro' lately.

842  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Crypticon horror convention - Everett WA June 18th - 20th on: June 12, 2010, 02:21:26 PM
Crypticon is in one week.  It's a horror convention in Everett WA. Is anyone else going? Would be cool to see some GT'ers there.

Last year it was in Seattle but they moved North for some reason. There are a lot of interesting guests. Check out the list at http://www.crypticonseattle.com/.

I'm in the camp that didn't care for season two all that much. The witch story line was kinda lame. I am looking forward to the new season and not just because Anna Panquin just came out as being bi.
844  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Horror Movie: Martyrs on: June 04, 2010, 03:30:57 AM
I loved Martyr's but I'm a sick bastard. It had tons of shock and gore. The ending was just ambiguous enough to keep me thinking about it for a few days after. I watched Human Centipede as well and wasn't nearly as disturbed as I thought I would be. That flick was all about what you didn't see. The German guy was creepy.

I dig all the great French horror. Frontiers was another one I enjoyed.
845  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: My new novel is coming soon! Warning - controversial title/topic on: June 03, 2010, 01:57:23 AM
We are live on Amazon! Soon on Barnes and Noble, Powell's and others.

It should be out on Kindle in a week or two and prices at only $2.99.

BTW an early reader (a friend who is also a writer) had this to say: "It's like Tom Robbins and Terry Pratchett had a retarted lovechild and left it on Charley Manson's doorstep... but only after they dropped the poor thing on it's head!"

You can check out a 30+ page preview of the book. I realize this one is not for everybody.  Tongue It is now available on Amazon and will trickle to other stores like Barnes and Nobel and Powell's over the next few weeks. I have a limited supply of books that I will be signed by both Jonathan Moon and myself at Crypticon in Seattle next month. Please PM me or shoot me an email at stupidzombies @ gmail.com if you are interested. They will probably be priced at $15.

After completing The Apocalypse and Satanís Glory Hole, the authors, Timothy W. Long and Jonathan Moon, fled the country. They were last seen in Brazil, sipping Singapore Slings with Mescal on the side at the Cross-Eyed Donkey bar.

The men are wanted in connection with a string of bowling ball thefts, zombie resurrections, and miniature bulldog jell-o wrestling. If seen, the men are considered wacked and hyper. Caution is advised unless you have a fresh supply of nitrous oxide to share.

Clergy leaders have sworn that the two men will be brought to justice for crimes against the Church and literature in general.

This is from the mockup. We went through a number of covers before settling on this one. I'm hoping to approve the proof in the next few weeks. This book is really beautiful. Lots of headers and some really good art work. Final page count is around 340 pages.

I'm a new convert to the cult of mac. I just got a Macbook pro last week and love it. I was really thrilled to see that Steam was out on the mac. The bigger surprise was that I had access to Torchlight since I already purchased the PC version. very cool.

My mac is my main writing machine but it is pretty damn cool that it can play Portal so well. I don't know what kind of video card is in the machine but it should be able to handle half-life 2 if they put that out.

The graphics aren't that great but the interface, menu's and pop up characters are very crisp. I can't really comment on gameplay except to say that it is a decent SRPG. I honestly don't care about the dating sim side. My wife and I are still cracking up at the game content and cut scenes. Ah - crazy Japanese games. Love em!
853  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PS3] Record of Agarest War on: April 29, 2010, 10:52:39 PM
I picked it up. What a laugh the packaging is. The mousepad is very um, comforting. LOL!  I guess I should go check out the game as well.
854  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PS3] Record of Agarest War on: April 29, 2010, 04:24:56 PM
So a couple of local stores have this. I'm a whore for SRPG's and the limited edition is rather funny. I showed my wife last night (she is Japanese) and she just about laughed herself silly. So worth it? Can anyone comment on the gameplay? One of my favorite games is Disgaea - is it close to that at all?

Coming out on Kindle?  biggrin

YES! And it will probably be $2.99 on kindle and B & N / smashwords. The electronic book trend is changing very rapidly. Publishers are finding that the cheaper books sell like mad. Zombie Wilson is on smashwords.com for $2.99 and if amazon ever approves the Kindle version it will be the same price.

(Just a side note. My good friend Rhiannon Frater edited Zombie Wilson Diaries. Last month she signed a 3 book deal with TOR worth 6 figures. I am so freaking proud of her!) If you like zombie books you better grab them while you can. Her self published trilogy will be pulled next month so TOR can prepare them for release.

Bad ispellchecker, BAD! LOL

We wrote the synopsis this weekend and it seemed good at the time but being writers we had to go back and change a bunch of stuff which was probably a good idea. DOH!

The book is being edited by a recent Bram Stoker award nominee. I'm really excited to have her onboard.

Note: don't google glory hole at work!
858  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / My new novel is coming soon! Warning - controversial title/topic on: April 15, 2010, 04:16:19 AM
Hey all,

I know some of you enjoyed Zombie Wilson Diaries. I had a lot of fun with that one. Well last year I was approached by a writer about doing a collaboration. We share similar interests in the bizarre. Bizarro to be exact. We talked for weeks and sketched up a plot about the apocalypse gone terribly wrong. We took a rather unique approach to writing the book together. We picked our characters and melded them into the plot but we told the book from our respective points of view. We didn't just pass a manuscript back and forth. Anyway, the book is done and coming just in time for Crypticon in Seattle this June (we will both be there doing readings and being goofy, swing by if you are in the area!)

So now the warning. The book is a very silly thing - probably comparable to South Park humor without all the bleeps but it will offend some. The title is:

The Apocalypse and Satan's Glory Hole.

Feel free to check out a synopsis at our blog. I just posted the prologue today as well. In a few weeks I'll have at least a chapter read on my new podcast.

One thing I would like to mention. Bizarro books are a good time, I love them. But they are short. We hope to break that trend. This book is nearly 115K words and the manuscript is a hefty 413 pages.

This is a rough draft of the synopsis:

Armageddon arrived on a weekday which was really inconvenient for a lot of people, including The Four Horsemen. After their appearance on The Kayla Mangrabler talk show, they decided to go their separate ways and cause as much havoc as possible. Jesus has been stuck at the craps table for three days, sipping vodka and Redbull, completely missing the end of the world. But he is about to meet up with Death and go on a road trip that will test their resolve and blood alcohol content level.

Now, an unlikely band of heroes are going to Las Vegas to fight the apocalypse. Creepy Chuzz with his one armed, heroin addicted monkey Phil are heading there in a flying ice cream truck. His best friend Leon, now on the run from Pestilence who has his designs on the janitorís bathtub LSD addled brain. Assuming he can escape the clutches of the insane Father Maniwhore.

Along the way they will encounter bouncing glory hole boxes, militant lesbians, an undead general, a flying demon named Princess Sally, hordes of zombies, and a trio of secret agents hell bent on delivering a cease and desist to Lucifer himself.

But they better hurry because the devil is rising in the desert, and he is hungry to start what his son could not. The apocalypse, but only if he can get it on with his giant floating glory hole.

I'm sure someone is trying to port Android to the phone. I'd like to see Windows 7 running on it but MS said it's not going to happen. But I bet someone will figure out how to do it. There is a video floating around of the OS running on this phone but I'm not sure if it is real.
863  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Tmobile's HTC HD2 on: April 03, 2010, 03:31:33 PM
Did anyone else manage to snag one? They sold out in about 4 hours but I wandered into a Radio Shack last weekend and they had them in stock. I upgrade phones a lot because I'm a technology whore. After a week of use this is the best phone I have ever owned. It also made me curb my desire for an iPad.

This monster has a 4.3" screen and razor sharp graphics. The downside is that it runs Windows Mobile. HTC did a nice job of covering up the OS with their 'sense' interface but you can still tell there is a ratty old dog hiding under the chrome. The phone is freakishly fast, comes with 16 gigs of storage and feels really solid. It is a big phone but I can live with that.

Oh it comes with the Barnes and Noble ebook reader - which is cool but you can't load your own books on it, you have to buy them from B and N if you want to read on it.

864  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: iWhat? This is My Next Phone... on: April 03, 2010, 03:22:40 PM
I just picked up a HTC HD2 over the weekend. I'm stuck on T-mobile. I think the EVO is going to be very similar but it does have HDMI output. The only thing that sucks about the HD2 is that it runs Windows Mobile.

EVO looks sweet and if the HD2 is any indication, be prepared for a very fast phone. I had a G1 and Cliq before this and they are way too slow for prime time. The screen on these new phones has to be seen to be believed. Watching movies on it is just ridiculous. They are so sharp they almost look 3-D.

870  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / The Zombie-Wilson Diaries - Now Available! on: February 08, 2010, 03:10:09 PM
The book is now on Amazon. In a week or two it will start showing up on Barnes and Nobel and other book sellers. This is a complete rewrite of the online blog and it spent 3 months in editing. The book is also being considered for a movie option which just blows me away.

The Zombie-Wilson Diaries

It should have been the perfect vacation. A beautiful island without a soul in sight. Blue sea so clear I can see the reef. Palm trees swaying in the wind, and a girl with barely a scrap of clothing on.

There is only one problem. She is a zombie and she wants to eat me. That's right. My only companion is a creature with a hunger for human flesh. I should bash in her brains and toss her in the ocean but I don't have a volleyball to talk to.

All I have is this diary and my own Zombie-Wilson.
871  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Ubisoft unveils new copy protection system: on: February 03, 2010, 04:27:39 PM
I like how games like Mass Effect 2 and Dragonage have handled this. You buy the game and after the install you get access to bonus stuff right away. Not to mention free future stuff.

On the other hand I'm not so keen on the micro downloads that cost 8 bucks. Those things come out so fast I always wonder if it is just stuff they stripped out of the game so they could sell it later.

As far as this scheme that Ubisoft is trying. I am out as well. If my internet goes down or I am on my daily commute I won't be able to play their games. No thanks.

Is this the ME2 thread? I thought I would see five or six pages of stuff. I'm very much enjoying the game. The story telling is top notch. The cut scenes are a bit annoying. I think for the first time the in game graphics kick the rendered stuff right in the junk.   icon_lol

Artists still seem to need that promotional giant in their corner.

Traditional book publishers have pulled back marketing for all but their established authors. There is very little advantage to new authors anymore in professional publishing houses since the promotion went away. I don't know much about electronic distribution, but I do know that self-publishing is entirely respectable for print now that new authors have to shill their own work.

Well said. You would be amazed how many New York lit authors sell barely 500 copies of their books.

Also, and this is straight from an agent. Now a days to get a book published and make a tidy bit of profit you have to have more than just good writing. They look for that something special or unique that will help market a book to perspective publishers. They turn down well written books all the time because they simply can't market them.

It's a freaking crapshoot. Some make it and some fail. Self pubbed, old school pubbed, you probably have a better chance of winning the loto then making it big as an author. But there is always that chance that something will be so unique it will just sell. Case in point. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Seth Grahame-Green. Laugh and scoff at his mashup. I know I did. He went small publisher. But his book sold itself, with a good bit of help from Jane Austen of course. Now it is in the sixteenth printing and he just signed a deal for half a million. His next book? Abraham Lincoln vampire hunter. It will sell too because he has a name for himself already.
874  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Self Publishing and eBooks? The future of Print? on: February 02, 2010, 12:30:58 AM
Amazon now pays out 70% royalties on kindle sales provided you list the book between 2.99 and 9.99. It used to be 35%. I love it because I already split royalties 50% with my publisher. My first novel Among the Living has been out for about 6 months and has sold about 180 copies on kindle at $5.99 a shot. But it didn't become available until October last year so this has been a nice little boost to my sales.

A good friend of mine is self published. She started out online, writing a story on a forum. It grew into 3 novels. She took the books and paid an editor to go over them and paid an artist for the cover. Then she purchased a pro account on create space and put her books up. It was pretty risky but she was already developing a fan base. The nice thing about self pubbing is that you get a healthy chunk. Sure CreateSpace takes their cut but a writer can pull in 4 or 5 bucks a sale.

Of course it can also go the other way. It can be poorly edited, have crap artwork and sell maybe 2 or 3 copies. "Mom, Dad, buy my book please". A lot of people don't like self-publishing, they think it is a bad word like taxes. But publishing is changing. As long as you have a good marketable product and can reach an audience, what is wrong with doing it your own way?

As it turns out, her method was pretty well thought out. She went on to sell a lot of books. Like thousands of them in just a year. She has also picked up a movie option for the books and an agent that is actively soliciting her work to the big New York firms. Self publishing can work. The nice thing is that it looks good to the big guys. I know amazon picks up books that sell a lot and offer the authors full publishing deals.

Thanks for starting this thread!

I know this is swaying way off topic but the numerous points about self-publishing are near and dear to me - open a new thread on it anyone? Here here a great blog post by Jon Konrath talking about how much money he makes self published versus how much he makes with a publisher.

Go iPad! Kindle support or not I still want one.  Tongue
876  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: the Apple iPad/ iSlate / iThingie? on: February 01, 2010, 05:38:15 PM
I wonder if the kindle reader will work on the iPad. I love how I can take out my itouch and pick up where I was last reading when I have a few minutes to kill. I can't imagine they will be too keen on keeping it around when they have their own library to promote.

I am very surprised at Macmillan and amazon over the weekend. Publishing is changing and the big houses are acting like the music industry did a few years ago. They need to adapt or step aside.

Seriously, why should an eBook cost $15? There is no overhead. No warehouse cost. And the authors don't make any more royalties off the books. If they kept the price reasonable they would sell a hell of a lot more ebooks. AND Amazon has already announced that they are bumping royalties on kindle to 70% provided the books are priced under $9.99. I've actually asked my publisher to lower the price on my new book for Kindle. If I had my way it would sell for $2.99 but it looks like $4.99 will have to do. BTW. eBooks sell 6 copies for every 10 paper copies on Amazon.

Just a few random thoughts ...

I expect to have a proof of Zombie-Wilson Diaries by this weekend. The book has gone through 4 months of rewrites and edits. To celebrate the upcoming release, my publisher is holding a contest.
