That's because you're too busy actually producing stuff.

I produced some gas last night. Does that count?

I used to hit gone gold every day, it was probably my first stop in the morning. I had even agreed to do some game reviews for the site, (I was the games editor at another site, and writing for a few others) but then everything just went south. Anyway, GT's a great place to hang. Here's to another 10 years - <virtual quaff>.

A new clock radio for my iPhone 5s
A Ken Onion Kershaw knife. I immediately sliced my finger open so it passed the "ridiculously sharp" test.

And without sounding like a sappy d-bag. My best gift was from my fans. During December they've snatched up over 3K copies of my books.

I think that was the finest episode of TWD yet. Finally we are getting to what I want! I want real threats, real consequences to the character's actions, I want more than endless supply runs. I realize that it's a long running series and there has to be a lot of filler and fan service but wow. That episode really put the fucking apocalypse into zombie-apocalypse. Well done. Bravo. Must watch again.

101  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Feed the zombies .99 book feast on: November 27, 2013, 04:21:02 AM
Hey all. I've organized a huge indie book event on Facebook called Feed the zombies - $.99 book feast. The event is all day tomorrow, November 27th, and you'll be able to pick up something like 20 books for a buck each - with one exception - a box set of 5 books for $1.99. I've gathered a who's who of the genre and brought in some new blood. Rhiannon Frater, Craig DiLouie, David Moody, Mark Tufo, and John O'Brien to name a few. So gorge on cheap undead reads before you gorge on dead bird.

102  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: How has your life changed since the last "next gen"? on: November 25, 2013, 01:25:20 PM
It took me about a year and a half to get on the next gen train last time around. I had a lot of time to play games and my wife tolerated them well enough. I had several consoles do the red ring of death thing a year later which was lame!

Now my kids are grown but I'm still married to the same great gal, 23 years next month, and I have almost zero time to play. I've put a paltry 2 hours into the new Call of Duty game since it was released. In the last 5 years I've written 7 novels and the more I write, the more time I have to dedicate to the craft and fulfilling publishing contracts. But that's not the only reason I don't play games as much as I used to. I just can't seem to get into games anymore. Skyrim was the exception - I think I lived in that game for a few months. In fact I'm scared to start it up again because weeks of my life will just disappear.
103  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Not more zombie books! on: November 23, 2013, 02:09:12 PM
It's out early and it's only .99 for the first week of release. The book features a number of sketches by Zach McCain, the guy that did a few of my book covers including Among the Living. I'm a big fan of his work and it was really great to hire him for the project.

Is this book independent from the "Among" storyline?

It is! In fact it's set in the same world as another one of my books, Beyond the Barriers, but it's different characters and set in a different time/place so no knowledge of the other book is required.

This is a free serial so you can read the book online. It's even optimized for phones.

I was so excited about it, even ran out to get it on release day, and then... wow.  I don't recall even learning the game enough to kill a single dinosaur.  I do seem to remember moving a crate, though.

I had completely forgotten about Hand Simulator 1998.

It looks just like the first Command and Conquer games.  Not a bad thing really if the gameplay is good.

Man, the video got me lured in more and more, then they dropped the "download for free!" bomb at the end.  Now I need to read up on how aggressive a free-to-pay scheme they're using.

I also couldn't get a good sense of whether the gameplay was more RTS-like or tower defense-like.  I'm thinking more the latter?  Build your base and then defend it?

Ugh. Looks cool but download for free makes my eyes glaze over. I know, how jaded... I'm sick to death of all the Freemium stuff.

new addition:  Grabbers.

When alien monsters go on a murderous rampage on an Irish island, the only survivor is drunk -- because alcohol makes blood toxic to the aliens. Now, as a sober cop tries to stop the carnage, the rest of the town must get wasted in order to survive.

New Smart Cover feels very cheap. I had a leather cover on my 3, and the plastic one looks and feels very cheap. It does attach ok, but bubbles up in the middle just a bit. Not a big deal, just wish I could use my old leather cover.

I'm surprised they weren't offering a leather case this time around. I got a red cover and it also bubbles up a bit in the middle. I think this happened on my mini as well but not any more.

115  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: the Apple iPad on: November 01, 2013, 09:35:46 PM
The iPad Air is something else. I went in to pick up my black 16 gig AT&T and stopped at the display to see how they felt. It's a bit of a shock when you pick one up because they are so light now. It really is an iPad mini with bigger screen. After handling the device I decided that I liked the white better. They were really cool about it and said they had plenty in stock so I was able to return my preorder and get a white one. When have you ever heard of an apple store saying they had plenty in stock on a launch day?

Anyway. I'm pretty blown away by the new size and weight. I think they have stuck the perfect balance between what a tablet should be while maintaining great battery life and a lot of power. The bezel is so small that when you hold the iPad and read you kind of forget you're on a tablet. Not sure if that makes sense ...

I think this might be a perfect 10" tablet for gaming. My iPad 4 was great but the weight made me want to avoid dual stick style games. They are great for the first fifteen minutes but then the iPad gets heavy.

I'm off download X-COM and KOTOR to give it a work out.

oh, and have you ever heard of Leanpub Crusis?  if so any opinions?  I stumbled across them on the National Novel Writing Month website.

I think I understand this idea. So authors setup their books and then base changes on reader input? With Kindle you can update books on the fly and they are usually available within about 12 hours. Maybe I missed the point of Leanpub?
120  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Amazon Kindle: Kindle Paperwhite! Updated Fire! Kindle Fire HD! on: October 18, 2013, 10:16:10 PM
I got the new Paperwhite a few weeks ago and really love it. The screen illumination is something else. It's so soft now and I don't see any of the weird lighting of the old one. The device is noticeably faster. The other great feature is the book pop up that allows you to quickly scroll through a book but will return you to the last page you were reading. I read that the contrast was better and fonts were sharper but it's hard to tell. Anyway,  thumbsup from me.
