The first review really kind of says what I've found out about looking for appliances in general. We decided on that for the extra drawer fridge thinger.
We are looking at this model at Best Buy. This one is on sale at just about every retailer so it must be time to make room for a new model. I'm fine with saving $800 and getting the old model. Beats the hell out of our 12 year old Kenmore which was a fine fridge but it's racked up some repair bills in the last few years. The 'in cart' price is $2420 or something like that.
It's time to replace the old fridge. My wife and I have been looking at the french door with the freezer on the bottom style but there are so many! Anyone have nice things to say about LG, Samsung, or Frigidaire or any other brand for that matter. We are leaning toward Samsung due to reviews but does anyone have one and can offer thoughts?

Overall, this was definitely a better episode, with everyone trying to move their own stories forward, at least. Well, not Andrea, really. And the Gov started to, but then, like an inept supervillain, he walked out on his master plan before it was really underway.
Spoiler for Hiden:
He took out one guy, then went through several rounds of stormtrooper level shooting until the zombie bus arrived. Why leave then? I think the one zombie showing up was supposed to be an impetus, but it seemed like a non-threat.
My guess is he didn't know really know the true numbers or firepower inside the prison, so he just sends in zombie bus to thin the herd, then pops back in later to clean it out.
Agreed.
Spoiler for Hiden:
I dont think it was the Gov's plan to end Ricks crew right then and there. He was performing an act of terror, not an actual assault. He didnt have enough troops or firepower with him, to take on a fortified position. He came in, rattled their cage, dropped the zombie bomb and split. Ricks crew is now damaged, divided and confused.
Spoiler for Hiden:
That seems like a dumb plan, though. Rick's crew has already come in and knocked this shit out of the town, despite their having superior numbers and firepower (and he does have some information through both Merle and Andrea and what he got from Glenn and Maggie, hazy though that info might be. He took out one guy and left. All he's done is stir up the hornets nest now, and these are hornets that have already delivered a nasty sting.
I don't see that as a problem with the episode, though. I totally see that all being what the Gov would do. It's more about his character which, in my opinion, is not as impressive as I was hoping for.
Spoiler for Hiden:
Well said. The scene with the Gov shooting his gun in the air after getting the good guys "just where I want them" and then leaving was idiotic. Someone needs to send him the Evil Overlord List so he can get his shit together.
I am not a gun guy and I didn't really grow up around guns. I write books and the characters in my books often use guns. That being said I went to a gun shop a few years ago and talked to one of the salesmen. We had a great conversation and he showed me around the weapons I wanted to write about.
I've owned a Rock River Arms Tactical Operator 2 ever since. I don't have an assault rifle because I need one. Seriously, if someone broke into my house in the middle of the night I'd more than likely shit the bed before I took a shot at them and risked shooting one of my family members by mistake.
I keep the gun locked in a hard plastic case. It also has a trigger lock. I have taken safety classes with my wife and daughter and every 2 or 3 months we go to an outdoor range and blow through about $75 worth of ammo. It's a hell of a lot of fun but I could live without the gun.
Manic! On top of the day job I'm putting together a 3 part interview with a who's who of the apocalyptic horror genre. I'm shooting for writing 10K in my new book, and I have to finish a 10 page screenplay for a workshop on Sunday.
Slightly different viewpoint. I will buy one if they maintain the same size (thinness) and weight. I don't want to go back to a heavy ipad like the 3 or 4. The mini is the perfect size for reading and surfing. I have an LTE mini on AT&T and it's been worth every penny so far.

A Microsoft spokesman told The Verge on Tuesday that when the Surface Pro ships on Feb. 9, a large portion of the unit's flash storage will be allocated to Windows 8, pre-installed apps and a recovery partition, leaving users a meager 36 to 65 percent of space to work with.
damn that's dumb. at least some of it can be reclaimed but still....
Not that I think it's a good idea, but it's not that different from any of the recent ultrabook designs, or for that matter from netbooks. Same thing for Macbook Air, etc as well.
I picked up a new macbook air last weekend and the 128 gig hard drive had 105 gigs free. The windows 8 ultrabook I returned and exchanged for the air? It had 40 gigs free when I fired it up. It is (as always) a symptom of windows.
Maybe it was 95ish. I checked with my son and he said it wasn't 105. I removed a few apps that I don't use as soon as I got the air so I'm probably remember the newly freed space. I'd check but I returned the machine (too cramped) and got a macbook 15" retina while they were on sale at BB this weekend.
They had Surfaces on display and they were pretty cool. Loading Word on a tablet was a trip. The little flat keyboard that came with it was really hard to type on. I had to really press down to get keys to register. Overall it was nice and snappy.
Over the last 4 years I've written 6 books, 5 have been published. I have a fancy-scmacy NY Literary agent that represents Chris Hardwick. I sold over 20K books last year, hung out with celebs, been hit up by movie producers concerning my books, I have NY Times best selling author's as friends, I've moderated panels at conventions with stars of the writing world, and all that's cool. You'd think that was a great life's achievement, right? (you did say brag)
But that's NOT my life's greatest achievement, I just wanted to put this into perspective. Being with my wife for 22 years is my greatest achievement. I would collapse into a shapeless mass of babbling jello without a purpose in life if she weren't with me every day.

Stoopid forum effect. I picked this up today at a local Target. I tried to get a copy at Gamestop because their website said it was available and even gave me the option to Pickup @ Store. I only live a few minutes away so I drive over and they say they only have copies for pre-orders. I asked: "What if I'd filled out the pickup at store" form? They said sorry, they only have pre-orders in stock. Weird.
Did anyone find the time jumps in the last two shows jarring? Maybe it's just me, and really, they had the same sort of jumping around at the start of the season.
Still, what a great season, and Jessica Lange - wow.
Amazon Studios will be soliciting for scripts for the show. I'm thinking about trying my hand at it but writing screen plays is a PITA. A friend of mine won $10K in an Amazon studios contest to do a film treatment. Not too shabby.
5:30 greet the kids and then spend 5 minutes getting puppy attacked by my 8 lb Maltese fluffball. Bust out the laptop and catch up on social media crap.
6:00 wife gets home. We play the "What should we eat tonight?" game for a while. Try to write a few hundred words between cooking and watching TV/eating.
7:00 write.
8:00 watch some show from the DVR while still getting puppy attacked. Write because I can't do one thing at a time.

Sweet. I'll pick up a copy once I wrap up with the two Zed books I am reading now.
btw, if you still live locally, I'd love to buy a hard copy off of you.
Where is local? I'm near Seattle.
I am doing sending out signed copies of Among the Living and Among the Dead as a set for $30 and I cover postage. If you are interested I have a few left. Drop me a PM and I'll send details.
Unless you moved, i think you are up the hill from me.
Confirmed! I always head your way around 4th of July.
I watched it and it was okay. I expected it to be better but it was instead just so freaking ham-handed and riddled with cliches. Spoilerfying just in case.
Spoiler for Hiden:
Overall, Kevin Bacon phones in an okay performance as a (get this) former FBI agent turned alcoholic writer who may be the only person capable of cracking the case. The serial killer is obsessed with Poe and likes to cut out eyeballs.
Elements of typical procedural dramas abound while Bacon makes amazing leaps of logic just from walking into a room. Bacon sees the word Nevermore and is enraged enough to throw stuff around, go off in pursuit, and just then realize he hasn't carried a gun in years. How about the damsel in distress that can only be saved by Bacon? Or the hero worshiping FBI agent that's got Bacon's back?
This sounds negative but I actually liked the show and plan to watch a few more episodes. Since it's a FOX series chances are very good that it will get canceled.
It was cool to see Maggie Grace in the first episode. Too bad she won't be back.

Among the Dead is out - links to various formats here. I'm not sure when the audiobook will hit itunes and audible but it should be by the end of the month.
Nothing quite like getting a box like this from your publisher:
Now to finish the final book, Among the Ashes and then take a break from zombies.

I finished it today. Here is my one word review:
Glorious.
Seconded. It was an ending I was actually happy with. Very, very nice end to an awesome series.
It's stunning that Sanderson was able to wrap up so many threads and deliver a satisfying conclusion. I'm tackling The Way of Kings next.
Spoiler for Hiden:
How about that 70,000 word chapter The Last Battle? At times I felt a little bit lost and also disconnected from the fight. I think this is a by product of reading books like Malazan and Joe Abercrombie because you really get to see the battles from the front line soldiers. This is really a minor complaint, though.
Sorry to see some major character deaths but it was bound to happen. As much as I love this series the characters have been bullet proof since the first book. Egewene was probably the most shocking death.
It was touching to see that Jordan wrote the epilogue before he died.

Ok...so I played the WoT game back in the day. Should I start at book one and just begin cranking through them, or can I skip some of them like I did when I re-watched Star Wars? (there is no redeeming quality to The Phantim Menace)
The books are pretty slow between 7 and 10. 10 is the worst offender because nothing happens. And I don't mean that in a Seinfeld way. The problem is you have to read them all.
I've been reading this series for 22 years. I started the first one a few months after my honey moon and much like my lovely wife they have been in my life ever since. I don't know if any other writer has influenced me to want to write as much as Jordan has. Sure I write in a completely different genre but everything I learned about world building has it's foundation in reading his books when I was in my early 20's.
I'm about at the halfway mark as well and --WOW has it been a good read so far. Sanderson's writing is much more workmanlike than Jordan's but it is good to bring so much closure. Still, I miss what an excellent writer RJ was, particularly in the first 6 books.

so, the book looks pretty. having a hard time resisting the urge to read the last page
No kidding! I am even avoiding looking at chapter titles at the beginning of the book. I I even suspect there is a spoiler on a forum I don't even look at the thread.
I have read the first 100 pages and stuff is happening fast but I'm reminded, again, that Sanderson is a very good writer but he doesn't have the same skill as Jordan. You can whine about skirt smoothing and braid tugging all you want but with a series that is this size, Jordan did an amazing job of having unique traits, no matter how annoying.
Did anyone see all the negative reviews on amazon just because there is no ebook? Lame.
I loved Jordan, I love the setting and I loved the series but I will continue to whine about the skirt smoothing and braid tugging. Honestly though when you look at 14 books and over 3.5 million words it wasn't used all that much. I did a quick check and braid was only used 47 times in book 9 I'm going to miss the series.
The no eBook thing until April is completely stupid though. It was a huge mistake, the publisher should not have listened to the widow who honestly doesn't understand the new medium and it will cost both of them quite a bit of money in the short run. Honestly it's already available on the main sites in multiple formats and every one of those downloaded is at least a potential loss of a $20 sale.
VERY painful to the publisher. ebook are almost pure profit.

I can't wait to see this movie again. If you get HDNET the movie will be on later this month. I think it's the 23rd but it may be the Wednesday after. I don't know if I can wait a few weeks to see it again, may have to order it on itunes this weekend.
I don't see it on their online schedule. Maybe next month or different network?
I don't see it now either. Weird, maybe it got pulled for some reason.
I can't offer advice on all of the appliances you listed but our Washer died a few days ago and we've done a lot of research. We're going with an LG front loader that also offers steam for cleaning. They are running a small rebate at our energy company but the washer is still close to $900. The thing that tipped the scale after talking to many salesmen (and reading reviews) was consumer reports listing this washer as one of the best.
With the french door fridge. When both doors are open it lets out all of the cool air. If you have a lot of people in and out of the fridge you lose a lot of efficiency. Some have double doors with the first door opening up to quick items like soda and milk and eggs but they are crazy expensive.
There are several 'standards' so measure very carefully before you make a decision. When our house was almost finished we went in with a measuring tape to be safe.
She fought to steady her hand as she lowered the blade. It almost dipped to the ground, but she refused to drop it. It was hers; she had purchased it, practiced with it, bloodied it, and eventually killed with it. They had a history, Kate and this sword, and no man in a green suit was going to separate her from it.
Another joined him and pointed a gun at her. He spoke, but she had trouble processing the words. Of course she wasn't bitten; of course she wasn't one of them. The words came out in a jumble, slurred and bereft of conviction.
“Have you been bitten?” the other man screamed as he chambered a round. Why do they always do that? she wondered in some vague region of her mind that was still lucid. Why do they always chamber a round to emphasize a question? It was enough to point a gun at someone’s head; you didn't have to be a dick about it.
She tried to reason, to tell him everything was okay, but those words didn't come out. Instead, she said the only thing that she wanted to be remembered for.

My daughter and I saw this yesterday and I was absolutely blown away. I expected to hate the slow pace but really loved the entire movie. I can't wait to go see it again. There is a theater about half an hour from me that is showing it in 3D HFR.
I got this on my Vita thanks to a gift card. I'm about 4 hours in and the game is really hard to put down. I didn't play the original but I'm really getting a kick out of this game.
The mother looking for the puppies (that may have been eaten by their Python) in her ridiculous Gucci shoes while the overworked housekeepers take care of the kids and clean up all the dog shit was probably the finest moments in the movie.
