I did a free day yesterday (just over 1,000 downloads) and a .99 sale today with some paid advertising. Just trying to get more copies in hands. More copies = more reviews. More reviews = sales. LOL it's a vicious cycle. Now a days it's all about amazon reviews. This whole changing genres thing is a pain in the ass.

The GM is a lot better than the beta but still pretty lame overall. I read that turning off parallax view helps. Parallax looks nice the first few times you show it to friends then you never use it again.

Don't read my book after Martin, sheesh. At least cleanse your pallet with something a little less epic first. My little paranormal murder mystery is pretty far from incest, backstabbing, politicking, and dragons.

urban fantasy is always a good cleanser after epic fantasy.  it bridges the reality with the fantasy quite nicely.  plus, you haven't written any of my go-to genre for fantasy follow-up:  sci-fi.
... yet.

My first attempt at writing a book was a Sci-fi spy novel called Zero Breath. I was about 50K words into it when I realized it was complete and utter crap. I tossed it.

Actually my bud Jonthan Moon and I are embarking on a new book. We just worked out a sweet deal to write a Cronenberg-esque horror thriller called The Boom Generation but it probably won't be out until early 2015. Not exactly Sci-Fi but it's going to be quite a different book for me.

My goal is to start work on an epic fantasy next year that's been brewing in my head for a few years. Fantasy has always been my first love and I plan to do right by her.

so, which version would get you a better profit?  I find myself reading more hard copies of books nowadays, but if Kindle is where you get a better profit I'll grab that instead.  granted, it might be awhile until I read it; my reading time is currently filled up with textbooks for classes (I hate writing poetry, shoot me now).

Buying from my website. The only problem is that I don't have books to sign and send out yet. They'll be here in about 2 weeks. Printers ...

It's all good. Any version is a win for me.  icon_biggrin

Stealth release!

The release date is Sept 10th but it's already starting to leak onto sites.

Brought.. Delivered to my Kindle Fire..  It's in my queue, but I have several books to read before I get to it.  I am looking forward to reading it

Thank you Soulchilde!

Yesterday was the release date and it was a blast. I did a live twitter chat, had an event on Facebook, and gave away about a dozen books. I only need to sell about 400 more books to make a small profit on this one - gah!

We had a thread about this game over on OO, but since they don't seem to be around anymore crybaby I'll start one here.

It's on sale, 40% off, on Steam this weekend. The game is in Early Access, but it's playable and a lot of fun if keeping people locked up and watching them in the showers is your thing icon_wink.

UPDATE: Forgot to mention, the game was just (today) updated to Alpha 13, which adds prisoner escapes, policy tuning and other updates.

Quote
Alpha 13 has been released! Steam users will be automatically updated.

It’s time to rethink your prison layouts! Prisoners can now dig escape tunnels, using tools they’ve stolen from around the prison. They will do their best to dig around buildings and walls (which slow them down), and they will even co-operate and join up their tunnels and dig together to escape quicker. If they manage to tunnel outside your outer wall they will dig up out of the ground in a puff of dirt, and make a run for it. And we don’t have snipers in the game yet, so it’s just tough luck if they make it that far.

An important thing to realise is that when prisoners are tunnelling, they are actually deep underground and often far away from their cell. However you will still see them in bed asleep. If you search a sleeping prisoner who is actually tunnelling, the fallacy will be immediately revealed - his face will be replaced by a papier mache dummy with a face painted on the front, enough to trick your guards into not realising what was happening. The tunnel will be revealed and the prisoner will pop out of the ground wherever he is, and will make a run for it.

You can build new Perimeter Walls around your prison, which are very tall, very deep and very expensive. Prisoners will do their best to tunnel around these, and will only tunnel through them if there is no other escape route - and it will take a long time to do so. However you can’t build pipes and electrical utilities through these walls, so you’ll need to plan where your weak-spots are going to be.

We also continue to work towards better right wing controls over your prison, for those that want them. You can now research and unlock a new “Policy” report, which allows you to set the type and amount of punishment doled out for fighting, stealing, rioting etc. The defaults are set to exactly how it was before, but if you choose to you could throw prisoners in solitary confinement for 24 hours after a fight, if you thought that was appropriate. This will have a seriously detrimental effect on that prisoner and he will not cause any more trouble for quite some time. On top of that, from the new Policy screen you can request automatic searches of prisoners and their cells when they go off the rails. Catch a prisoner with an escape tool? Automatically search his cell.

This looks fun and it is mac compatible. I'm in. Thanks for the heads up.

self  publishing via e-books is where the is at for the writers especially for less well known writers.  They get to cut of the middle men and probably one of thr reason publishing houses were against the format.  Anyway, looking forward to it

It's actually the opposite. Building a fanbase as a self published author can be brutally hard. There are something like 30K ebooks published on amazon every month so it gets harder and harder to stand out unless you plan to spend a decent amount on advertising. It helps if you are tapped into a genre and known in that genre's community. A friend of mine is very friendly with the horror genre and has reviewed a ton of books for them. He spent years working on his first zombie book and when he released it you can bet that every author he's helped was right there promoting his book.

Could you define urban fantasy? Is it exactly what it sounds like? And by that I mean...fantasy set in...an urban setting?

Buuut. What are the hallmarks of said genre.

If you have Netflix you can stream Dresden Files which will explain it nicely

I'm a big fan of Dresden and Jim Butcher.
143  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: So I wrote an urban fantasy on: August 27, 2013, 04:16:30 PM
Thanks all. The book will be on kindle, nook, and every other ebook format as well as paperback. The page count is just a hair shy of 300. The audible version may take a few months.

Part of a series? If it sells. I've outlined a sequel but need to finish a few other books first.

Just to be upfront. I work with a traditional publisher but I'm stepping away from that with this book and self publishing. If that stigma bugs you that's cool - I understand. While I have an agent, actually the same agent as Chris Hardwick for his books, things are changing and writers are actually making money from their books these days.

For this book I put about $1K into editing, cover, and formatting. I'm doing everything a publisher would do except I have control of my book. More importantly I'll collect 70% royalties instead of 20% on ebook sales. Yep, ebook sales are where it's at. If I only sell 500 copies of this book I'll make my investment back. If I don't sell that many - well, back to the drawing board.

Anyway I really try not to spam the board with book sales stuff but this cover was so striking I just had to share.

149  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: headphone advice please on: August 20, 2013, 06:30:28 PM
I'm one of those idiots that spends a ridiculous amount of money on headphones. I have everything from a set of in ear Vsonic GR07's ($180) to Sennheiser HD-700's which run about a grand. As far as pure listening - and if you want to spend the money, I don't think you can beat the Sennheiser HD-600's. Yeah they retail for about $400 but you can pick them up for around 300 if you shop around. These are open ear headphones so music will bleed out but it's really like having a set of high end speakers attached to your head.

If you don't want to spend that much then these are the undisputed king of low cost but incredible. Audio-Technica ATH-M50S. I'd call these my fun, all around go to headphones.

I love my Polk in wall speakers and they were reasonably priced. I have 8" for fronts and 6" for sides. The side speakers are about 10" from the ceiling. The fronts are in the middle of the wall and my newish Samsung 60" is mounted in the center. I think I spent about $600 total on the speakers.

Saw it last night.  I has always wondered what it would be like if you gave the greenlight to make a movie like this to a competent person instead of Michael Bay or Roland Emmerich.  It turns out if you do that you get a hell of a movie that isn't filled with pointless explosions, bad humor or groan-inducing stupidity.  It really pisses me off that this movie isn't raking in the cash.  This is all that I hoped it would be.  It's not Othello, but it was extremely entertaining from start to finish and God bless them for giving Idris Elba a major role in a blockbuster.  That man is awesome.

just look at the sky instead.

I wear watches because I like the look of it, but am thinking of getting a Pebble watch.

I'd hold off on the Pebble. I just got one and I'm surprised at how buggy it is. Half of the notifications don't work requiring either jailbreaking your iphone or if you are on Android downloading hacks - even then you'll be digging through forums looking for solutions to simple problems. For as much money as they raised I'm surprised that so little effort has been put into the actual software.

The watch itself is a really cool concept but it looks and feels really cheap. The display is pretty nice though and I'm enjoying a LCARS face.

My pebble watch is supposed to arrive today - can't wait to check it out.

Just call Nintendo...as long as your 3DS is registered on club nintendo they'll check and add your fire emblem with no problem.  I had to do this a couple of days ago and it showed up a day later.

I logged into club nintendo today and my $30 credit was smiling at me. So now, what to spend it on.  nod
