About 60 hours into Fallout 4 and I'm not even close to being bored. I imagine it's about the only thing I'll be playing this weekend.
2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (11/10) on: November 09, 2015, 11:10:17 PM
My PS4 reports that Fallout 4 will unlock in 5 hours and 50 minutes and it's my one and only purchase this week. Hell, probably this month at the very least.

Phew! I just checked the package of bacon in my fridge and it's already cured. Time to bacon up.

Already purchased Divinity on PS4. I have it on Steam but I can't wait to play on the big screen.

I'm having a blast with Wasteland 2 Directors Cut on PS4. After a few hours I finally have the game down. I'm amazed that they ported such an old-school game to PS4 and it's this well done. I'd say I'm 10 hours in and things are really starting to get interesting.
6  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Not sure what to do with my MacBook Pro on: October 14, 2015, 11:41:53 PM
Pick up a new Macbook and add one of these for $159 bucks for the 256 Gig. I've had one in my Macbook Pro Retina for over a year and it's a great drive.

I dusted off Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy. The game runs surprisingly well on my Macbook Retina. I had to watch a few gameplay videos to get back into the game and remember all the movement commands.
8  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Is There a Better Zombie Book Than World War Z? on: October 01, 2015, 08:36:39 PM
Jonathan Maberry's Dead of Night series is excellent.
Peter Cline's Ex-Heroes series is very good.
DJ Molles The Remaining series. Arguably the infected aren't zombies but it gets lumped into the genre.

But better than WWZ? That's a tough one.

They could have cut the show down by 20 minutes by removing the teen angst. Otherwise, I liked it.

Considering Elder Scrolls online. Is there any hope that it's a good game? The PC launch seemed to be a mess.

Arise o thread. Arise and shamble forth.

After checking out for close to a year (thanks a lot, divorce...), the next book in the Z-Risen series arrives tomorrow. I'm throwing a little facebook party tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM PST so if you're in the virtual area, swing by. I'll give away audiobooks and other stuff.

Also there is a brand new Book 1-3 compilation. 170K words of non-stop zombie action. Giggety.

I was surprised to see the pre-release was unlocked and is now playable on PS4. I've seen one strange stuttering when a cut scene started, otherwise the game plays well and it's absolutely gorgeous.
16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/XB1/ps4] The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on: May 14, 2015, 03:15:16 PM
I caved and pre-ordered on PS4 while it's on sale. I've always liked the Witcher games so this is a no brainer.

Mine makes a lovely addition to the room. It doesn't get used but it looks nice.

It's kind of funny if the name Alexa comes up on the television. The Echo always lights up - waiting for a question.

One fun thing is to take the remote into another room and do a "Simon Says ..." - freaked my kid out a few times she just blasted out something like "Nick, do the dishes."

Got this up and running on my macbook retina. Gorgeous game and holy crap I got sucked in, before I knew it I'd played a few hours last night and wasn't even paying attention to the time. I'd planned on spending 20 minutes looking at the pretty scenery. Phew, sleepy morning for me.

I'm seriously thinking about trying another character and paying more attention to the character creation screens. I kind of buzzed through them and created a big blue paladin. I'm intrigued by the possibility of playing an armor wearing wizard.
19  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Pillars of Eternity on: March 30, 2015, 04:52:53 PM
I purchased the Mac version and downloaded it yesterday. After I got to the first mission it hard crashed. Argh. Also, weirdly, all the bonus content that came with my version can't be found. I've tried to uncheck the DLC on Steam and check it again. It reports downloading but there's no making of video, manual, sound track, or map. Hoping this upcoming patch fixes these issues. Sadly I didn't get a chance to go back after creating my character, watching the intro movie, and getting my first small quest.

I hate going to gamestop. The constant "Do you want to pre-order. You should pre-order. PRE-ORDER MUTHA FUCKA!" "Got a tablet to sell?" "OMG we have a strategy guide! Bwaaaaafluffleburgersturgle!"

One of the worst experiences, and the one that made me start pre-ordering on Amazon, was when my son wanted a game for his Birthday. I went on the Gamestop site, found that a local store had them, and filled out the little reserve thing. I went to the store a few hours later and they said "Oh man, we sold out of that game a few minutes ago." I showed the guy my little reserve thingy and he said that it wasn't a guarantee. Then he asked me if I wanted to pre-order something. ARGH!

-Day job saw a nice raise

-Attended ComicCon, Texas Frightmare, World Horror Con, OryCon, Rustycon, and Crypticon. I made great contacts at all of these
-Lost 30 lbs at the beginning of the year and kept if off

-Started the year with divorce after 20+ years of marriage
-My 14 year old black lab got cancer
-Late delivering several manuscripts
-Dealt with heavy depression (but kicked it!)
-Barely had any gaming time

I'm not sure how they'd get software updated on the device. There's no way to plug it into a USB port of any kind. Maybe it can just download them. Since Echo, like SIRI, is cloud based I suspect all of the updates will happen online. I did notice that Echo was slightly sharper the second day. My son and I did a side by side comparison between Echo and Siri and Echo had a LONG way to go. I'll think about putting together a short video and popping it up on youtube.
26  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Amazon Echo on: December 04, 2014, 07:53:15 PM
I got my Amazon Echo yesterday and was somewhat underwhelmed. While it is very cool technology it isn't nearly as useful as Siri. The majority of my questions were answered with "I don't have an answer or that." One question I asked was how far the earth was to the moon. But Echo did tell me how large the moon was. I was also able to tell it to play specific songs from my prime music which was cool. The sound quality for music isn't that great. My little Klipsh bluetooth speaker is a lot more powerful and clearer.

I understand that it's cloud based and that it will improve. For now, it's a very cool gadget to show friends. I DO think that the Echo has a future but the device needs time to mature.

Anyone else excited about this new gadget?

FYI this game went live digitally on PS4 at 9 PM Pacific time on Monday.  Wonder if that's a new trend.  I like it!

I had this downloaded and watched the timer click over through the last 30 seconds. Then came an agonizingly slow install. After an hour it was at 20% installed so I went to bed. This morning it was at 66%. I hope it's not my connection.

On the other hand. The pre-load was over 40 gigs - I wonder why it wasn't play ready at midnight EST.

I really feel like I need to write something and submit it, but I've never had the discipline to do the necessary rewrites. One of these days I keep telling myself I'll find the time to really focus on it, but then a good game comes out or I find some other hobby to explore and I never get around to it.

This was me until 5 years ago. I didn't submit my first story AND collect my first rejection until I was 40. The problem is that now I don't have time for games and it kinda sucks. I'd love to spend a weekend playing Diablo 3 but I have to freaking write.
30  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Have you ever written anything substantial? on: November 13, 2014, 05:44:26 PM
8 novels, 1 novella, 1 novellete, and about 20 short stories. My latest story - actually just finished it this morning, is called Dr. Spengle vs. The Unihorn Horror because Nazi's vs. magical, foul-mouthed, battle armor wearing Unicorns. It ran close to 9K words.

As far as plotting I usually have a terrific start in mind, then muddle through the middle parts, and come up with an end - about the time it's time to write the end. Phew - that was a run on sentence. I've written outlines before and managed to stick to them so I'm not adverse to doing them. I find I work best when I jot down plot points, as they come to me, inside the document I'm writing. My first major 3 page outline was for my former agent so she has an idea of where to potentially pitch the book.

When I'm done with a book I call it the "puke-draft" because no one should see what I've vomited onto the page. After about my 3rd rewrite I feel like it's getting there. By the 5th rewrite I've got a decent manuscript. I don't ever workshop or ask for critiques. I work with pro editors and they are good at content stuff as well as correcting my crappy grammar. The reason I no longer workshop is I find that all of that feedback strips my voice right out of the story.

If you want to learn the craft I suggest taking a class. I did a year of classes online at Gotham Writer's Workshop but there are any number of great schools out there. Taking a single creative writing class can be enormously helpful.

PS4. I used to be a PC gamer but I switched to Mac a few years ago and for the most part I don't miss PC games. Playing PS4 on my flagship Samsung with in wall Polk Audio speakers and a 12" sub is pretty awesome.

Gorgeous game on the PS4 - what little I got to play. After the opening chapter I was stuck a screen that said "Downloading - 45 minutes remaining." This was after the game had downloaded. Will this happen with every freaking level for the digital edition?

No, it won't. You didn't fully download the game before playing, but had you waited a bit, you wouldn't have had to see that screen you're describing. Almost all PS4-games support playing before the download is fully finished, and the download bar on the main UI only shows how much you need to reach the ability to start the game. You can find the actual download size and progress in the console's settings menu.

The bar was finished as in 100%. I don't know what was going on but it played great last night.

It surprised me that Apple has made its new default screen size 4.7 inches with the iPhone 6... and scarier that so many people are buying the Plus. I had an HTC One X (4.7 inch screen) for two years and moved to the iPhone 5s because I wanted a smaller phone. My wife has a Note 3 (same size screen as the 6 Plus) which, because it certainly isn't going to fit in her skinny jeans pockets and she rarely carries a purse, I end up having to carry. If she had the 5s (or any smaller sized phone) she could fit it in her back pocket at least, which is what I do and is kinda annoying.

I don't think people realize how much one-handed utility you lose with the larger screens, either. It's super clumsy to hold so your normal operation of the device becomes two-handed which to me is counter-intuitive. The only time I use two hands with my 5s is when I'm typing, and even then I can still get away with one hand a lot because of suggestive/predictive typing. I was always fumbling with my One X.

Looking at pics on the larger screen sure is nice, though.

I had a Note 3 for about 9 months and loved the screen real estate - just hated Android. A guy at work just got his 6 plus and he's kind of freaking about how big it is. He had a iphone 4s before this.

I'm enjoying the size of the iPhone 6 quite a bit. The 6 plus will be here on Monday so I can compare and decide which one to keep.

Was just searching for apps, and the top trending app is something along the lines of Verizon data transfer with another for AT&T. People have no clue about back ups and iCloud I guess.

I just used the AT&T app. It transferred all of my pictures, contacts, and stuff from my Android phone to my new iphone. Sure, I could back all that crap up but why not use this simple utility? It's pretty slick, I got them both on the network. My Note generated a QR code, my iphone read it and started transferring all of my stuff.
