Tom,

Purchased and read in one day.  I like the cover art, the story itself, and supporting forum members.  I'm looking forward to the next installment - well done!

For the record, I enjoy Clines work as well.  Fun stuff.

Thanks a bunch for checking out the book. Yeah Clines is a good guy and a very talented writer.

Haw! Typo. There are some who call me... Tim.

Late last year I quit my day job to write full time so I have a lot more time to work on books. It also means I can finally finish novels that have been on my back burner for a while. IMPACT EARTH: SYMBIOSIS is a project I've been working on for nearly 4 year and bonus--no zombies! This is a super hero/alien invasion mashup set on the streets of Seattle.

My friend Peter Clines (seriously, if you haven't read The Fold, Ex-Heroes, or 14 get on it!) helped me come up with the synopsis. My normal cover artist whose name is Eloise J. Knapp worked her magic once again and created an amazing cover. My beautiful girlfriend Katie Cord, a publisher herself, and owner of Evil Girlfriend Media, kept me centered and encouraged me to keep pushing into this new genre.

Long intro but here's the thing. There is this myth that writing is a solitary existence. I couldn't do this without help. I don't post here very often but I do tend to lurk on a daily basis. I enjoy the banter, game reviews, and stealing pictures from the "this time it's personal" picture thread. Anyway, if anyone wants a free copy of this book, just message me with your email address. No strings attached. Just to forewarn you, the book is Kindle exclusive so I only have .mobi files. Anyway here's the cover:

What happens when you hang out at a con with stoker nominated author Craig DiLouie and you both trick convince British horror author David Moody to join in your madness? This. This is what happens.

We're calling it: Band of Brothers meets Dead Snow.

I'm curious to hear how you did the multi-author writing.  Did you each take a chapter and pass it back and forth for massaging, or did one do more outline and others flesh out details, or...?

We're writing separate books. I wrote the first novel. David Moody is working on the follow up called THE FRONT: RED DEVILS. Craig DiLouie will write the third then we'll start over again in that order. We're slated for 6 books total but there are plans for spinoffs as well. In a couple of months I'll write a novella called Night at Wereth: A Tale from The Front.

I have written with another author where we wrote alternating character/chapters. It was a blast.

I'm having a blast with Wasteland 2 Directors Cut on PS4. After a few hours I finally have the game down. I'm amazed that they ported such an old-school game to PS4 and it's this well done. I'd say I'm 10 hours in and things are really starting to get interesting.

18  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Is There a Better Zombie Book Than World War Z? on: October 01, 2015, 08:36:39 PM
Jonathan Maberry's Dead of Night series is excellent.
Peter Cline's Ex-Heroes series is very good.
DJ Molles The Remaining series. Arguably the infected aren't zombies but it gets lumped into the genre.

But better than WWZ? That's a tough one.

Arise o thread. Arise and shamble forth.

After checking out for close to a year (thanks a lot, divorce...), the next book in the Z-Risen series arrives tomorrow. I'm throwing a little facebook party tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM PST so if you're in the virtual area, swing by. I'll give away audiobooks and other stuff.

Also there is a brand new Book 1-3 compilation. 170K words of non-stop zombie action. Giggety.

I was surprised to see the pre-release was unlocked and is now playable on PS4. I've seen one strange stuttering when a cut scene started, otherwise the game plays well and it's absolutely gorgeous.

Mine makes a lovely addition to the room. It doesn't get used but it looks nice.

It's kind of funny if the name Alexa comes up on the television. The Echo always lights up - waiting for a question.

One fun thing is to take the remote into another room and do a "Simon Says ..." - freaked my kid out a few times she just blasted out something like "Nick, do the dishes."

Got this up and running on my macbook retina. Gorgeous game and holy crap I got sucked in, before I knew it I'd played a few hours last night and wasn't even paying attention to the time. I'd planned on spending 20 minutes looking at the pretty scenery. Phew, sleepy morning for me.

I'm seriously thinking about trying another character and paying more attention to the character creation screens. I kind of buzzed through them and created a big blue paladin. I'm intrigued by the possibility of playing an armor wearing wizard.
29  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Pillars of Eternity on: March 30, 2015, 04:52:53 PM
I purchased the Mac version and downloaded it yesterday. After I got to the first mission it hard crashed. Argh. Also, weirdly, all the bonus content that came with my version can't be found. I've tried to uncheck the DLC on Steam and check it again. It reports downloading but there's no making of video, manual, sound track, or map. Hoping this upcoming patch fixes these issues. Sadly I didn't get a chance to go back after creating my character, watching the intro movie, and getting my first small quest.

I hate going to gamestop. The constant "Do you want to pre-order. You should pre-order. PRE-ORDER MUTHA FUCKA!" "Got a tablet to sell?" "OMG we have a strategy guide! Bwaaaaafluffleburgersturgle!"

One of the worst experiences, and the one that made me start pre-ordering on Amazon, was when my son wanted a game for his Birthday. I went on the Gamestop site, found that a local store had them, and filled out the little reserve thing. I went to the store a few hours later and they said "Oh man, we sold out of that game a few minutes ago." I showed the guy my little reserve thingy and he said that it wasn't a guarantee. Then he asked me if I wanted to pre-order something. ARGH!

-My 14 year old black lab got cancer
-Late delivering several manuscripts
-Dealt with heavy depression (but kicked it!)
-Barely had any gaming time

I'm not sure how they'd get software updated on the device. There's no way to plug it into a USB port of any kind. Maybe it can just download them. Since Echo, like SIRI, is cloud based I suspect all of the updates will happen online. I did notice that Echo was slightly sharper the second day. My son and I did a side by side comparison between Echo and Siri and Echo had a LONG way to go. I'll think about putting together a short video and popping it up on youtube.
36  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Amazon Echo on: December 04, 2014, 07:53:15 PM
I got my Amazon Echo yesterday and was somewhat underwhelmed. While it is very cool technology it isn't nearly as useful as Siri. The majority of my questions were answered with "I don't have an answer or that." One question I asked was how far the earth was to the moon. But Echo did tell me how large the moon was. I was also able to tell it to play specific songs from my prime music which was cool. The sound quality for music isn't that great. My little Klipsh bluetooth speaker is a lot more powerful and clearer.

I understand that it's cloud based and that it will improve. For now, it's a very cool gadget to show friends. I DO think that the Echo has a future but the device needs time to mature.

Anyone else excited about this new gadget?

FYI this game went live digitally on PS4 at 9 PM Pacific time on Monday.  Wonder if that's a new trend.  I like it!

I had this downloaded and watched the timer click over through the last 30 seconds. Then came an agonizingly slow install. After an hour it was at 20% installed so I went to bed. This morning it was at 66%. I hope it's not my connection.

On the other hand. The pre-load was over 40 gigs - I wonder why it wasn't play ready at midnight EST.

I really feel like I need to write something and submit it, but I've never had the discipline to do the necessary rewrites. One of these days I keep telling myself I'll find the time to really focus on it, but then a good game comes out or I find some other hobby to explore and I never get around to it.

This was me until 5 years ago. I didn't submit my first story AND collect my first rejection until I was 40. The problem is that now I don't have time for games and it kinda sucks. I'd love to spend a weekend playing Diablo 3 but I have to freaking write.
40  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Have you ever written anything substantial? on: November 13, 2014, 05:44:26 PM
8 novels, 1 novella, 1 novellete, and about 20 short stories. My latest story - actually just finished it this morning, is called Dr. Spengle vs. The Unihorn Horror because Nazi's vs. magical, foul-mouthed, battle armor wearing Unicorns. It ran close to 9K words.

As far as plotting I usually have a terrific start in mind, then muddle through the middle parts, and come up with an end - about the time it's time to write the end. Phew - that was a run on sentence. I've written outlines before and managed to stick to them so I'm not adverse to doing them. I find I work best when I jot down plot points, as they come to me, inside the document I'm writing. My first major 3 page outline was for my former agent so she has an idea of where to potentially pitch the book.

When I'm done with a book I call it the "puke-draft" because no one should see what I've vomited onto the page. After about my 3rd rewrite I feel like it's getting there. By the 5th rewrite I've got a decent manuscript. I don't ever workshop or ask for critiques. I work with pro editors and they are good at content stuff as well as correcting my crappy grammar. The reason I no longer workshop is I find that all of that feedback strips my voice right out of the story.

If you want to learn the craft I suggest taking a class. I did a year of classes online at Gotham Writer's Workshop but there are any number of great schools out there. Taking a single creative writing class can be enormously helpful.
