601  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Your Nintendo Revolution Controller rumor for the day.... on: June 23, 2005, 03:14:59 AM
I dont see how this controller would be any less confusing for nongamers, which I thought was one of their targets.

I'm currently wanting to get a gamecube for nintendo exclusives but want to hold out until more revolution details are given since its backwards compatible.
602  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Battlefield 2 Demo on: June 09, 2005, 10:05:08 PM
2 guesses whose connection will decide to not work tomorrow. Mine. Just so I cant try the demo. Of course it will work in the morning before I go to work, but will die as soon as I enter my home.

Its toying with me.
603  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Worlds "Biggest" hacker busted on: June 08, 2005, 09:44:21 PM
Hacking into government computers is not the best way to prove that aliens exist. Especially at the cost of so many years of ones life.

It would be better to just smash their broadcast system that keeps our minds asleep so that everyone can see.
604  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo Revolution downloads free? on: June 03, 2005, 09:33:46 PM
I think it would make more sense that you get free games based on what you purchase. Purchase the new Metroid game and get all the old ones for free, etc. This would be a good tie in of the new to old game.

Or just buy a new game and get X free ones to download, maybe the age of the system decides what you get (1 n64 vs 2 snes vs 3 nes, etc.)
605  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / GBA Recommendation on: June 01, 2005, 09:26:50 PM
I'd say DS.

It looks to be getting some really good games now that its been out a bit based on E3. It also has a better screen (true backlist?) than the GBA SP (or so I've head) so makes your GBA games look better. Go check out some reviews and previews and see if it interests you.

If you just want the ability to play what you already have then go with the GBA SP (Micro has smaller screen and the SP is still small enough to fit in a pocket).
606  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Wow! An 8 year old guitar prodidgy on: May 31, 2005, 02:51:44 AM
The amount of time someone has played should also be taken into effect. I would expect an 8 year old who has played for 5 years to be way better than a 16 year old who has played for 1 year.

He is very good though and will hopefully keep getting better as he gets older.
607  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Top 5 games you'd like to see re-made? on: May 25, 2005, 02:16:10 AM

A lot of people have listed Autoduel (here and on other baords).  What was so great about it?  Somehow I totally missed that in my gaming infancy...

Its an rpg with car combat focus. You can participate in arena duels with your car (different classes based on cost), be a courier (deliver goods to different towns while avoiding bad guys), be a vigilante (make cash by selling salvage from defeated foes) or any mix of the three. Your character has a driving, shooting and mechanic skill. There is an actual story line based on your prestige that unfolds as you play.

Here is more info.

I've recently been playing the pc version (used to play it on my ol' C64. Here is an arena duel during amateur night where I've just defeated an enemy.
608  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Where did your online name come from? on: May 24, 2005, 03:03:25 AM
First online name I stuck with was Bad_Airplane. A friend of a friend made it up as a band name but I dont think they ever used it. After 9/11 I wanted a different name because I didn't want people to think I was referring to it. I was listening to Melvins "Ozma/Gluey Porch Treatments" a lot at the time so went with the title of one of the songs - Creepy_Smell. It just sounded like a better name than some of the other titles.
609  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Why do they hate America? on: May 20, 2005, 08:59:51 PM
While I see lots of people in Jerseys, I see way less in the full uniform just walking around.

Someone wearing a nfl jersey would be more similar to someone wearing a star wars t-shirt than someone wearing full on star wars outfit.

Still, to each his own.

Just wait until a furries movie comes out. Just imagine that line. smile

Hopefully it wouldnt be in the summer because those costumes are hot (I used to work at Toys R Us and had to dress as one of the giraffes for the grand opening and just instore it was hot)
610  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / System Discussion: Nintendo Revolution on: May 20, 2005, 02:17:25 PM
I think to play Gamecube or older titles you have to plug a gamecube controller into the 4 game ports. If so than the new controller is very different from what we have now. Not sure if this is good or bad.

This Reuters article states "Iwata said the new console is aimed at customers who hate clutter and find current games and the controllers used to play them to be confusing and difficult." and "Right now, game consoles are important for the game fan, but for the rest of the family, it's just a piece of nuisance that's loud and eats up electricity ... We want to create games for people who haven't played games but are curious about them."

Not sure how to take these statements about the controller and who they are making games for. I like having lots of buttons. I dont want a 1 button controller that only has 1 action command. I figure their controller will have some gyro functions like some of the recent gba games, but hope it still is semi normal. If its not I dont see a lot of game developers writing games for it at least not multisystem games, unless they would write it for the gamecube controller. What type of games will they make if their focus is not on gamers? I like popcap games but dont want a console that only has those type of games.

I want to like the Revolution because I like Nintendo games and havent played any gamecube ones. So a Revolution with backward compatibility sounds good. Maybe I'll just get a used gamecube instead. I've already got enough PC and XBox games to play through so I'm not in big hurry to rush into the next gen and I'm definitely waiting until all 3 are out until I decide. I was just hoping more details (even just game footage) would be showed of the revolution.

Edit: From other posts I've read on planetgamecube, maybe N is opting out of the MS vs Sony vs Nintendo thing. Let MS and Sony fight for one set of gamers/games and then those that want Nintendo exclusives (true exclusives due to weird controller) would buy the Revolution. Since N often makes cheaper consoles, maybe if its cheap (and small) enough than many wouldnt mind buying the Revolution just for the N games.
611  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Sprinkler System Anyone have one? on: May 19, 2005, 04:21:10 PM
Hmm. No clue.

I have one but I just dont run it in the winter. I just turn it off at the main control box.

Previous owner who had lived there since it was built mid-80's never mentioned having to do anything special in the winter (just showed us the on/off box and timer controls) and he was anal with telling us how to keep everything running.

Maybe those further up north have to do something with them in the winter.

I have a rainbird and a quick look on its website just mentioned the on/off switch for rain, winter and maintence.

Some lawn maintenance company website did mention winterizing them by blowing air into them to get the water out. Then in summer they test them for leaks. Maybe try calling some local sprinkler installer and ask them about it.

Sounds like you just turn it on, but maybe they wanted to do the leak test and other summer maintenance on it.

I just want Autoduel remade with today's tech.
613  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / So where do you stand right now? on: May 17, 2005, 04:29:05 PM
Not really sure.

I'm definately waiting to see how the systems and games turn out.

I like my Xbox and like the specs on the 360 but want to wait and see the games and more footage. I dont buy when they first come out but maybe pulled in if a price drop occurs when the PS3 or N Revolution are released.

I've never had a ps2 but I like the library of games it has to offer.

I also like Nintendo games (Have a SNES and GBA). The ability to play Gamecube games is nice and its game library would have more games that I could play with my son.

I dont have a HD TV so all the games are going to look fine to me since I'm already content with current game graphics.

Main thing that will sway me is games. I have a huge xbox and pc backlog to burn through while I wait and watch.
614  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / How many hours a week do you watch tv? on: April 23, 2005, 04:06:56 AM

Sweet. Hope it turns out good. These type of games are one of my favs on the GBA.

Ive been wanting one that wasnt fantasy based and either sci fi or real world. Still would like a more real world Jagged Alliance turn based strat.

617  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Any other console gamers not care a whit about handhelds? on: March 17, 2005, 04:15:59 PM
I like my GBA for reasons all ready stated, such as playing while watching TV especially with the wife.

I also like 2d platformers and the GBA has lots of them. I never finished most that were on the SNES so now I can. I also like the strategy games it has like Advance Wars.

I'll also play it when I'm at the inlaws and were stuck watching hours of TV.

I'm not getting a newer model (PSP or whatever Nintendo has next) for a while. Lots of GBA gaming I can still do.
618  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / time to upgrade? on: March 12, 2005, 03:00:45 PM
The GeForce 6600GT should be around $200 and is supposed to be a real good card.

Here is a link to a comparison of it to ATI Radeon 9800 and GeForce 5900XT.

This is one I've been looking at to upgrade to.

Try the defrag.

Have you updated any drivers lately?

I suffered from the CS:S stutter even after they patched it due to fragmentation. My drive never seemed to defrag right but once I got a new HD it ran fine and the new HD had almost no fragmentation while the older HD never seemed to clean up.

Its the Use button, whatever you mapped it to. In options go to keyboard and look under the miscellaneous section. If you dont know, buy a defuse kit and it will greatly decrease the defuse time.
623  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Five things that irritate me about console gaming on: February 04, 2005, 05:54:00 PM
I like forward back strafe on 1 stick and up down left right on another.

This way its similar to FPS control on a pc to me.

The forward back strafe stick is like WASD keys while the other stick is like my mouse controlling up down left and right.

I would like it if the controls could all be modified by the user.

I'm just not getting comfortable with targetting with a gamepad though. Never played many FPS on a console until recently.

My wife likes the popcap games. Most of my games maker her dizzy due to not being 2D. The only one of my games she has really played and been interested in was Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2.

Though she also likes old school Atari, NES and SNES. On MAME she'll play Tapper and Mrs Pacman, etc.
627  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBox DVD drive prob (most likely :)) dying... on: December 29, 2004, 05:23:07 PM
You could also make your own action replay and then transfer the files from memory card to your computer.

Just buy a xbox controller cable extender (so you dont ruin your original) and a usb cable. Follow instructions as from here to connect the wires. This makes a usb cable that will now connect to the xbox controller which your pc will recognize. Then install the appropriate driver. Finally, download the action replay software.

You can also find prebuilt xbox - pc converters if you dont want to make your own. If you can electrical tape a wire together you can do the mod, its just 4 wires. Just match and wrap.

Other sites explain this too. Just search for xbox to pc controller.

629  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 Demo and Source impressions on: December 22, 2004, 05:37:42 PM
I had the sound stutter even after the patch no matter what settings I tried.

I recently upgraded my HD and copied everything from the old one to the new one and now I dont get the stutter. Both drives were supposed to be 7200rpm drives but the old one seems slower. The new one is also less fragmented than the old drive (defragging the old drive never cleared up the problem and some files were still fragmented).

Not that this is viable for everyone but it worked for me. Now CS:S is much better since I dont die due to stutter during the first 5 minutes of each map.

I've been playing way more CS:S than HL2 so haven't finished it yet, but am enjoying it. Its not the greatest game ever but its still a fun game to me.

I really should start playing at least a few rounds each weekend. Mix up my CS:S with some UT so it doesnt go all stale on me.

I thought Moore just stuck the monument there of his own accord. Its like me putting a monument at my work. Or am I confused?! (About this, not in general )

The city putting a monument up in a public building is different than a person putting a monument up in a public building. This is before you even get to the church vs state thing. Just because he works in the building doesn't mean he has the authority to start installing whatever monuments he wants.
635  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Counter-Strike: Source - Need some help on: November 30, 2004, 01:31:13 AM
Quote from: "Demosthenes"
Fire only in 2 and three shot bursts unless creating suppression fire for teammates.  Take a second to aim even under fire, the game rewards accuracy.

This is highly important.

If you just hold down the button and go full auto you will spray bullets everywhere, not just where you are aiming.

The guns have different recoil so some are more forgiving when going full-auto.

What I did when starting was find a ct/t gun I was good with and stick with that gun for a while. Once I was comfortable with it I went onto another gun. I still can't snipe for anything, but I dont mind being a medium to close range man.

I can use Steam and filter for CS:S and see lots of servers.

Are you using any other filters?

Messing with mine, if I set up the Anti-Cheat filter to Secure only then I don't see any CS:S games, but can see older CS games. Maybe make sure this is set to All or Insecure.

638  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 - sound stutter problem officially recognized on: November 23, 2004, 06:07:48 PM
I've been able to play HL2 ok with the stutter. It mainly seemed to happen the first time I shot something at the start of a game but decreased as I played.

It mainly drives my batty in CS:S since during my first 5 minutes or so of play I die almost everytime time in combat since I stutter for a few seconds. I noticed that it goes away as I play too so I didnt stop playing completely. It just makes those first few minutes a pain. But once they fix it I cant blame stutter for my suckiness  Tongue
639  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Counterstrike: What's the deal? on: November 20, 2004, 04:38:16 PM
There are 2 kinds of maps.

1 - Hostage Rescue (CT rescue hostage by taking them back to buy point)
2 - Bomb map (Terrorists plant and set off bomb while CTs try to diffuse it)

As for who is an enemy and who is friendly, it just takes time to recongize all the skins.

You can set buy scripts to buy specific load outs at the beginning of each round. CS:Source lets you buy your last loadout. I'm not familiar with setting them up I just became familiar with the buy menus.

Best  thing to do is learn the maps. When dead ghost around the map to find out where everything is. has an old manual. Some stuff is out of date (Escape/Assassination) but Hostage and Bomb info should be good. Was trying to find a better how to but havent yet.

Dont worry about dying a lot. I haven't played CS in months and almost all I did was die when I played a bit last night. On one map I had more kills in one round than the previous 2 maps I played because I couldnt kill squat.[/url]
