121  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: I need to make a cd that will play in a car stereo on: August 29, 2009, 01:59:10 PM
I dont have Nero installed on my new pc but used it on an old one.

When selecting the media to burn to pick music/audio cd and not data cd. Not sure of the exact wording. Then don't go over 700mb or whatever the CD limit is. Nero will convert the mp3 back to whatever cd's use automatically.
122  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: XBMC mod. Who's done it? on: August 22, 2009, 05:23:22 PM
I did it a while ago with Mechassault (OG not GOTY version) and a save game install. Hardest part was cutting and splicing a controller extender so that I could mod its end to USB to plug into my PC for the save game transfer. That was simple wire wrapping. Then when running the save just make sure you read what choices to make. The harder part is installing a bigger HD. I think both the basic mod and new HD are probably much easier now since I know there have been updates to the install pack I used since then.

Well we ended up getting her a $750 Gateway which came with a 1G ATI 4650 in it. While not top of the line, it should last her many years, and does (sadly) annihilate my PC so I now have ENVY~! smile I did play the Batman Arkham demo on it today and with everything maxed except AA and the PhysX options it played like butter at 1440x900. I was pleasantly surprised. She is now happily playing Spore which I bought for her last year, but she didn't want to play on my PC.

Sounds like the gateway I got at Best Buy (DX4300-03) [Rest of specs: AMD Phenom X4 9750 quad-core processor(2.4ghz), 8GB DDR2]. It beats the snot out of my old rig (Barton 2500 + 7600GT). Plays Far Cry 2, both STALKERS, Arma2, Fallout3, Bioshock very well (1440x900 w/ med to high settings depending on game [Sometimes no AA or Shadows]). I mostly play older games so I'm enjoying running them maxed out and picking out bargain bins I missed on my old rig.

In the 5-600 range I think the best you will get is an onboard HD3200. I recently got a new rig with a HD4650 for 750 at BB and it seemed to be the lowest cost rig with an actual video card. I could have got a similar spec rig with a horrible onboard for 100 less and then used that to buy a card a bit better than the HD4650, but I didn't feel like messing with all that. I didn't try online as I wanted a new rig the day mine died as I don't really have a tolerable backup rig.
125  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: THinking of buying first desktop in about 5 or 6 years-help! on: July 25, 2009, 02:47:12 AM
I dont think the 4350 would be a good card. While it would probably play the older games you missed out, the card would hold back your system for recent games.

My old rig just died and I needed a new one (AMD 9750 q 8GB RAM) quickly so got one at the local best buy with a 4650 in it. For $100 less I could have gotten the same rig with a horrible card and used the $ to get a better card but I didn't want to worry about power supply issues or wait. So far the 4650 is quite good. Beats the snot out of my old 7600 (along with a quadcore being able to push it better than my old rig pushed the 7600). Bioshock, Fallout 3, Arma1, The Witcher and both Stalkers all run excellent with normal to high settings (Old rig was mix of low and med). Also runs the COD4 and Arma2 demos well. I normally build my own but didn't want the hassle this time so at least planned on buying a store one with a horrible video card and then updating it but am happy so far with my 4650.

If you can't get a better video card from dell maybe try to pick a cheaper/free one and use the extra money to buy a different video card. The 4650 I have is ~$50 US on newegg while $120 US at Best Buy.

EDIT: If you like Nvidia, at the least I would go with a 9600gt. I believe its better than the 4650 but don't think the 9500 is wrong (I haven't looked at this comparison a lot but wouldn't want a Nvidia below these 2).

I recently finished it and enjoyed it. Wasn't the best but watching it now I liked it more than other stuff put out during/after the writers strike. I see why I didn't watch it when it was released due to all the other good shows but now with nothing catching my interest much I really liked it. I'm glad the CW replayed it as while I used hulu its not my preferred method of viewing.

I got secret agent clank for $10. Funny thing is I remember it being marked down to $20ish just a week or so ago. I should have bought loco roco 2 when I saw it for $10 too as now that copy seems to be gone. I really need to play my PSP more as my library grows from target's $10 clearance price on lots of good games.

Once I have a new rig I'll get it. I love OFP and ArmA. Still need to play more of both but have been busy. Sure they have bugs but at least Bohemia works on fixing them so I don't mind supporting them. And the mods...oh the mods...

i would hope a $2000 system would handle 'most' any game you try to run on it..?

or am i missing something here...

Ohh..please keep us (at least me!) updated.

I'm currently running W2K too as I've homebuilt my last few rigs and never picked up a new O/S. It served my old hardware fine as the games I wanted to play (except 1 or 2) worked fine with a few tweaks and the few games that wouldn't work were above my specs anyways. Happy it got me some postapoc loving with F3 and the Stalkers, but I'll new something new to play ArmA2 and OFP2.

I plan on getting a laptop first as my current way is ancient and then I'll get a new gaming box. Not sure if I want to build one or have it prebuilt (either custom or generic with me slapping in a new video card).

Gah. Already got a few steam things today (monster truck nitro, arx fatalis and freedom fighter pack). At least that was only $16.

Since Clear Sky is $15 and everywhere else its been stuck at $30 forever I went ahead and got it. Also got some other bargain binners (Chrome and Rogue Trooper for $15) to bump my day's total to a regular new game prices of $50. Never used gamersgate before. Seems to work well so far.
137  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Wii] Where to start for Rock Band/Guitar Hero newb on: May 28, 2009, 03:10:13 AM
I recently got RB2 for WII and am digging it. Strangely it was the wife who wanted it the most. Picked up a 2nd guitar since she hogs it, though I enjoy the drums a lot too. We both seem to like the RB2 songs and now that the wii has DLC its even better (I've only dl'd a few of the free songs so far).

Not sure how Guitar hero stuff is as we got RB2 since we liked playing a friend's RB1. One thing I don't like about GH is that you have to stick a wii controller in the guitars which looks silly to me (Sillier than me playing plastic fake guitars on a wii for either game smile  retard ). I do like that GH is compatible with RB stuff but for whatever reason still like RB stuff more.

RB has enough songs I and the wife like to both stay entertained.

Anyone you know with either one or even just one? Or just try playing or watching both at a store or online along with checking out the song lists.

For me the first 2 chapters were great, the middle chapters were tedious, repetitive and boring, and the last two chapters were great. So if you can get through the middle portion of the game then you should enjoy it overall. But yeah, office hallway, after office hallway. after office hallway kills the middle portion of the game.

Thats similar to how I felt. A bit after half way it felt like a slog for a while then got back to fun. I think its short enough to be worthy of a play through even with the dull part.
143  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Are there too many gaming choices? on: May 09, 2009, 01:42:00 AM
I have an aging PC, ds, psp, xbox1, ps2 and a wii. I'll upgrade my pc one day but am in no hurry. It will be part to play games I missed and part to have a slimmer yet more powerful rig. While I would like a xbox360 or ps3 I just cannot justify it as I haven't played what I have already got. So I just play what I have and pick up a few bargain binners I missed. I've got enough to keep me busy for a while. Worse is I go back and play old favorites.

I do like lots of options though as it breeds competition.

I don't see it as a problem though. All media is like this. Tons of books, music, movies, etc. to where you can't read/watch/listen to everything.

This just started showing up: http://pointbeer.com/point/ around here. The amber is decent, nothing ground breaking. I'll admit I was suckered in by the pretty labels on the bottles. If it was a little cheaper I'd drink it more often, but 8 plus for a sixer isn't worth it imho. I don't know if any of you Wisconsin or Midwesterners have this readily available but I'd be interested to hear more opinions.

Also, Copper Hook is showing up now, and as I said earlier I love Redhook's seasonals, and Copper Hook is no exception.

Ive recently got a few of their brews as I just started noticing them popping up around here. So far tried the Winter Ale and their Brown Ale. Its not as flavorful as other stuff but around here its fairly cheap ~$6. Normally a bit cheaper than Shiner or about the same $ as Leinenkugel. Like Sam Adams it seems to be good stuff to ween people off of bud/coors but I'll still gladly drink it if its around or I don't like spending more money.

Just load up the map in the editor and drop down whatever ride you want.

Sadly my rig won't run ArmA2 or even OFP2. Once I clear my backlog down I'll probably upgrade. Hopefully both of those games will be out and patched up a bit.

I'll definitely end up with ArmA2 at some point as I really like OFP and ArmA..warts and all. I also like how Bohemia supports their products and keeps working on patches (ArmA got a new beta patch 1.16 at the end of Apr).

I've only played G1 but have G2 Gold installed. Only played a bit before being sidetracked. Currently playing through other titles before going back to it.

From what I recall G2 Gold adds a decent amount of content. From posts I've read of people that played G2 and G2Gold it seems like they liked the additional stuff. It also makes the game harder which one may or may not like but there is a tweak utility you can use to modify the difficulty.

Besides using school computers to look up info, the first thing I can really remember is trying to download a patch for Wages of War in late 96. Think I had to learn how to span it onto 2 floppies also. I know I did a few things before on the net but that is what sticks in my mind. This was around the time I got my first PC but I didn't have internet connection at home.
152  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Can't believe it happened to me (laid off) on: April 22, 2009, 04:14:25 AM
My last day was 4/7 but I sort of knew it could happen anytime for the last year. We were a small office and needed more clients. Almost had them but in the end it didn't matter. We were recently acquired and the main company shut down our office though this actually let me have a better severance than if the original company just went bankrupt. While the new parent company did similar stuff it was more automated than the manual work we did.

I've only sent out a few resumes but seem to be having OK success. I've had 3 interviews for sending out resumes to 4 companies. 1 I already had but didn't get the job but it seemd to ge well. 2 I have later this week with one of them having 3 positions. I've seen a couple other jobs that I don't quite quality for but will send my resume as I doubt most people meet what they ask for either and I'd rather have them reject me then me reject myself. There are also a few job placement companies that seem like they would be a good fit if I need to use them, but I haven't yet.

I've mainly been using a local job ad site and indeed.com, which seems to scrape from dice and monster and some other sites. I've also used it to look up other possible positions on companies I see with open jobs I didn't quite match for.

Good luck to you in finding something soon.

I sometimes entertain the idea but think the distances are too vast and the universe too large for one to come here. I would expect other life to be other there, intelligent too, just due to the size of it all. I just don't see them coming here. Maybe if we were in a more hip part of the galaxy but we are in the sticks.

I do enjoy reading ufo stuff though. I like both current and real old accounts. Its interesting to see how what we see changes. I really like the steam punkish airships of the late 1800s.

I still have NWN1 installed. Still need to get NWN2. Loading it up there are still a lot of online worlds going.

The only ones I tried were SoulForge (they have both NWN1 (SF3) and NWN2 (SF4) servers I believe), Alboria (Both under PW Story) and Always Autumn (Action). I think I spent most my time with AA. Fun people were on there, admins seemed active and some basic quests. Alboria seemed to have a lot of quests so you didn't need a admin. Soul Forge was OK but I stuck with AA for whatever reason. Its been over a year since I tried them though but a quick peek shows they are still active.

Can't quite think of the other I tried (Thale?) but it was a bit too much in character rpg stuff for me. I normally just run around solo unless I meet a few people after being on a while. Not into lots of rpg talking so to not out of character talk on them I solo'd.

The guild & registry forum for NWN1 seems quite active that might have other suggestions.

EDIT: Thain was the other PW I was trying to think of and it still seems to be active. I think you have to use direct connect and use the IP from Thain's website faq as I don't think it shows up on the MP server list thing.

When the Geometry teacher was on the loose they made such a big deal of him touching the janitor and shaking Danko's hand before he turned into them. Just because Sylar might have touched Nathan years ago doesn't mean he should have the ability to turn into Nathan now that he has the shape shifter power. Noah's wife can be explained because she has been hanging around DC and Sylar was stalking her to ruin Noah. Its different with Nathan because he's been in Mexico and AZ the whole time Sylar has been a shape shifter.

Yes, but do you think Noah's wife would let Sylar get anywhere near her to touch her?  If he did, I guess he would have to be disguised.  They never showed it, though, so we can't know.  With regards to the janitor and Danko, he had to touch them once and so they showed it.  Again, I'm not saying I am right, but his power can certainly be that he has to have touched them once at some point in order to be able to do it.  Nothing in the show has shown that it couldn't be his power.

I thought Sylar was disguised as Danko and he touched Noah's wife when Noah and her were arguing at Noah's work. After that scene Sylar goes into the bathroom where Danko is and Danko gets mad that Sylar is playing around.

I didn't hate the ending but didn't think the last few minutes were great (I liked the EP but it seemed they had to shoe horn in an ending since it was cancelled). Sort of seems like they were just trying to have some fun with it..bad word play and all.
