1441  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Guitar Hero: Van Halen on: October 06, 2009, 03:14:37 AM
For those that sent in for the free copy you should be getting it soon. I just got mine in the mail today and I sent it out a week or so ago after GH5 launch. You don't get much with it. Just a sleeve containing the disc and some pamphlets for Band Hero and GH:WT.

I played a few of the songs and really enjoyed myself. I was a big Halen fan so kicking the game off with Panama was great and only got better once Running With the Devil came up as an encore. I'm playing on medium and both those songs felt just right with the notes that were popping up (for guitar) so it gives a great illusion of playing that shit. The entire band is on stage in their younger form...although Michael Anthony didn't look quite right to me. I'm also guessing this was back in the days where everyone was getting along because the few times I could look up Dave and Eddie were sharing some toothy grins singing together.

There is a career mode where you play as VH and earn money and then for the non-VH songs you create your own band ('Spotted Dick' in my case) from the GH cast and play those. You can use the money you earn to purchase new outfits and equipment. I didn't see much else there to purchase but didn't really look in to it too much. I just checked out Billy Idols White Wedding which was boring to 'play' on guitar but a fun song nonetheless and some Blink 182 song I almost got 100% on; missed the last goddamn note!

It looks like you cut back and forth between playing as Halen and then your generic band at each venue you unlock. There's some extras for the Halen content where you can see the Lyrics or facts about the song as it plays. Didn't see much else but only played a bit so far. Thumbs up for free.

Saw it today. There were a total of 7 people in the theatre which should tell you how quick this one will be around.

The beginning of the film is great and reminded me a lot of the movie Cube. You got two people who wake up with only some memory of who they are and try and piece together things based on what little they know and the few clues they have to work with.

The movie starts going downhill once they come across their first monster. Then the film switches from smart psychological sci-fi to Resident Evil complete with lame characters, actiony sequences, and other unbelievable stuff. It stays with that almost till the end. Then the last 2 minutes of movie were great.

I really wished they kept the tone that the movie began with. That would have been a much better and more interesting picture.

Its still worth a rental or better Netflix streaming.

Pretty decent deal. Plenty of time to reach level 40, play around with different characters, and L40 one of those too.

Rodeo Cheesburger from BK. Haven't been to BK in forever so not sure if they brought them back but I know the last few times I went they were not on the menu. These were value cheeseburgers with BBQ sauce and onion rings. Loved those things.

I'm still trying to lock down a good gaming podcast. The 1UP podcast so far seems the most professional out of the ones I've listen too. CAG was pretty decent too but that Wombat guy is annoying to the point where he ruins things. Joystiq seems to be similar where there's the one annoying juvenile guy. Unfortunately that guy was substituting for the main host during the podcast I listened to. At one point when Ludwig (I think) was giving their impressions of Mini Ninja's, a game I was curious to hear a bit about, the host jumped in and basically said they only want to hear about real games - which I gathered were any FPS or games with lots of explosions. I'll have to give it another listen when the main host is back. Hopefully whomever it was that was hosting that podcast is normally put on a short leash.

Not that it matters now, since it's premiering tonight, but there's a 14 minute preview of this on XBox Live. I've put it on the DVR to watch based on the preview but was a bit disappointing with the one flash forward they showed. Was expecting aliens, a major catastrophe, or something epic along those lines. It was very tame compared to those expectations.  icon_neutral

I'm pretty new to podcasts. I recently replaced my ancient MP3 player with a Zune (not HD) which has opened up the podcast world to me. I'm interested in hearing favorites for ones to check out.

Also curious to which computer gaming ones you listen to? There are so many to choose from that I'd rather cut to the chase of finding the good ones. So far I've tried an IGN and 1UP. I didn't care so much for the IGN podcast, which was focused on gaming gadgets, but did see there were other IGN podcasts. I did like the 1UP podcast so may subscribe to that one.

Got to play the Crisis at Monster Island PQ which introduces the zone over the weekend. That was some amazing fun and a great way to introduce the zone. I really wish they didn't wait till around L30 to start introducing some of the more involved quests (e.g. Dr Destroyers Factory and that brain lab in Canada). If they had a bunch of those from the get-go a think a lot more people would be grouping together in the long run.

The TiVo HD will record HD shows over the air. But the device requires a subscription in order to work. Subscriptions are monthly/yearly or lifetime based.

At level 26 now and haven't hit a content gap yet. But there have been plenty of points where I've been doing missions marked 1 or 2 levels above me. Since hitting 20 or so I've been having to run around between Canada/Desert/Millennium City to get quests within my level. Whenever I dry up in the area I'm in I just use the crime computer to tell me where to go.

I also notice that after PvP my experience bar will typically go up a tick and I'll do PvP for short spurts.
1453  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Official 2009 American Idol Thread on: September 10, 2009, 07:01:12 PM
Ellen was a guest judge on last seasons So You Think You Can Dance. She was only there for a single night and basically wore out her welcome by the end. She was funny but offered nothing in her critiques other than one-liners. You knew she had no business judging the dancers which made the whole thing lose the little bit of credibility it has. Thankfully it was just the single night.

Dunno how she's going to bring anything extra to American Idol. Would rather they just go back to the 3 judge panel with what they already have. Hell if they were so hard up for a 4th judge they should have brought in one of the former contestants as they would have something to bring to the critiques.

If they bring back the judges save again this year along with this then that Simon Fuller guy is way out of touch with the audience.
1454  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Champions Online Open Beta impressions (starting Aug. 17) on: September 02, 2009, 03:43:55 AM
From all the complaints about the nerf I was expecting the game to be impossible to play. After several hours I didn't notice too much difference than before. With my solo character I was completing missions just fine but did notice battles were slightly longer (electricity build with no defensive/offensive buffs). I did have one super villain battle which lasted about 30 seconds (20 seconds more than usual) but still was not a close battle. It was nice to see the villain laster longer, as they were able to get off several powers during the course of the battle. Normally they get off 1 charged attack and then be dead.

Playing as a team (2 players) was little different than before. We were still plowing through mobs and multiple ones. Triple health mobs did take a bit longer to kill but other than two or three times where we got overwhelmed I didn't feel in danger.

So I'm not sure what all the complaints are about. Even in the game chat people were complaining of nerfs. From what I've seen the game still needs to be tweaked to make things more difficult.
1455  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Champions Online Open Beta impressions (starting Aug. 17) on: August 31, 2009, 06:48:49 PM
Yeah, they need to balance the game a bit more. My wife and I haven't had any problems tearing through mobs. Henchmen go down in about 1 second, mini-bosses in about 5 seconds, and bosses between 10-15. It was fun as you could tear through missions but now its a bit unfun as its little challenge.

Even the Fight Club mission at L17, which recommends 3 people gave us no problems. The one time during that mission I got overwhelmed I just held down block and within seconds my wife took out the mobs that were swarming all over me. I can't think of another mission, so far, that had us in any real difficulty.

They really need to raise the health on all enemies. Henchmen need to have health more along the lines of the min-bosses, the mini-bosses double what they already have, and boss battles should, at the least, take a minute to complete.
1456  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Champions Online Open Beta impressions (starting Aug. 17) on: August 30, 2009, 03:00:05 PM
There's always going to be those people that level up way before anyone else. The L38-L40 users after 48hrs are not the norm. After two days of heavy playing I'm at 18 and I've already been through the newbie zones multiple times. The new players are going to level a lot slower their first run through. But I do agree, at this rate, people will hit 40 well before any signifcant content areas come out. They'll need to get an expansion out there pretty quick as after the 2nd L40 character you've probably seen it all as far as content goes.

This was a toughy for me but ended up melting and getting it. Had The original Dawn of War, Titan's Quest (both) and STALKER but none of the other stuff. Mainly got it for the two Company of Hero games, the Dawn of War expansions and Dawn of War 2.

Semi regretting it as the games I really want to play will probably wind up as regular weekend dealies (I missed the two times DoW2 was on it) and could wait to play those but ah well. It's done.

It sucks, I know, but it wasn't misrepresented. There is some noise about it on the official forums so I wouldn't be surprised if they turned it back on. Stay tuned!

Logically the concept that something virtual is limited in stock is hard to process, no matter how clearly stated it may be.

Hmmm, maybe I should sell my account with the lifetime sub. $500 anyone? biggrin

That's part of the reason I was fine with getting the lifetime. I figure I can sell it later for what I paid for it and maybe some more. I saw a LOTRO Lifetime account going for $480. In a few years I imagine any core players that didn't purchase a Lifetime will want one.

Came across a few other decent clones.

Samus is looking a tad malnurished there but otherwise has the equipment right.

It's the Man of Diamonds! aka "Diamond Man"

Probably the easist clone to create but still looks fantastic jumping around

Zombie Hulk Smash!

There was also a fantastic P.N.03 character running around with the acrobat skill so they were doing cartwheels all over the place. Unfortunately they didn't stand still long enough for me to get a decent shot.
1462  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Champions Online Open Beta impressions (starting Aug. 17) on: August 21, 2009, 08:55:13 PM
Well I found Cryptic's policy on creating characters that bare a resemblance to existing ones:

Here's the crux of it:

"While Creating your Champion's Costume: You may not create costumes or costume/name combinations that are recognizable as the registered property of any company. (This includes things such as: comics, anime, movies, or video games.)"

Which to me sucks as its damn fun to see if you can create an existing character with the tools you are given; like creating celebrity Mii's. Hopefully you can still get away with creating versions of the characters that are obvious parody's.
1463  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Champions Online Open Beta impressions (starting Aug. 17) on: August 21, 2009, 03:18:47 PM
So what are your thoughts on seeing versions of existing "heroes" in the game? And what is Cryptic's stance on this? Is copying an existing work within this game a copyright infringement?

For me I'm loving creating existing video/computer game characters. I also get a kick out of seeing well made copies of existing superheroes in the game.

Here's the latest one I thought was really clever.

Loving this character creator. I just found out there's a pull down menu for head/body/hands/legs that offers even more options including jackets! Didn't realize they were there till I started hitting the random button and wondering where all those new pieces came from.

In any case here's my latest. Not quite as good as the Duke clone but not too bad either. I wish they had normal sized knee pads I could put on or specifically size the robot ones. Meet Ben.

Indy, do you know where the Polecats are hanging out?

Is this what I gotta fight to get a sequel made?

Having a great time playing around with the character creator. I forgot how fun the COX character creator was and this one is right up there with it. Made three characters but only two are worth showing off.

Feather Duster

Nuke Dukem

Shake it baby!

I've seen a few other "familiar faces" in game including, believe it or not, Weird Al Yankovic.

The Activsion site is saying it can take up to 6 weeks to ship the Van Halen disc after you type in your code. Still would get it before the regular release.

I went with the Amazon dealie where you get $5 towards MP3 downloads (although it looks like it has to be songs from the game) and $10 off your next video game purchase. Never got World Tour so probably going to use that $10 towards World Tour and get the instruments for $89. It came out cheaper than getting the $99 GH5 guitar bundle and the drum set for $89 (doesn't even have the mic or World Tour) seperately.

If the problem with registering is due to high demand on the system well then that's what the beta process is for - to iron out those things before launch.
1470  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Darkest of Days debut trailer..time travel shooter on: August 14, 2009, 07:02:41 PM
Same meh from me. The controls felt off to me for shooter. The graphics were not all that great and there were some odd pop-in animations like at the very beginning where arrows raining down on you appear out of no where. I almost stopped playing the demo - then the sci-fi stuff happened, which got me interested enough to play the rest of it.

My opinion slightly improved but not enough to buy it. I liked the Civil War theme, and mowing down enemies with a futuristic machine gun was kinda fun. But there were some jarring moments where the game would all of a sudden turn in to an on-rails shooter. When you were left to your own devices you had to get to certain points on the map to get the game to move forward. This even goes for an escort mission where you are required to head in to a trench to get to the next point to advance the story when you probably could have just as easily went around the trench and avoided the Confederate in the trenches.

When its on Steam for $5 I'd probably consider picking it up. Or better if it arrives on GameTap.

Whats the verdict of the rest of the books? I'm reading on Amazon that the plot starts crapping out. Given the price of the books I've been hesitant to purchase more. Any opinions on the rest of the series?

I'd also recommend heading to Kyoto. When doing some training for my company in Japan I went to Kyoto on my only free day. Really amazing place with some neat temples and rock gardens. I headed there from Osaka and I think the train ride was only an hour or so (one transfer). I had one of my trainees with me at the time and that made getting around a lot easier on me as I don't speak/read the language fluently enough to be effective. He was able to help avoid having to wait in any of the long bus lines by the end of the day I got to see quite a lot as well as eat lunch at a very traditional Japanese restaurant in the area which I probably wouldn't have found or went to on my own.

If you don't know the language you might want to look in to hiring someone local to go with you.

Who was better than Joshua last year?

Katee was a better dancer. Joshua was right up there with her but Katee was more impressive. The judges really built up Joshua by continuing to reference how he didn't have such-and-such training and that he shouldn't be able to do what he's doing. Like this year I would have been happy with either of the final two winning but the better dancer (Brandon) didn't win and it went to someone the judges built up ("I think you're peaking at the right time").

Definitely a good finale for the show. It's also great to see the show getting some popularity and they were able to move to the Kodak theater for the finale.

The better dancer didn't win (same with last year) but I'm happy with the results since it wasn't Evan winning.

Anyone else notice Little C was missing from the judges Chorus Line routine? Also anyone heard why they were doing the next show so soon - September 2nd I think they said? Even though I love the show I would have been fine with a longer break in between.

That's huge!

They have a similar exhibit at the Georgia Aquarium. There's a large viewing room where you just couldn't help yourself but sit down and stare at it in awe. The Georgia tank looks to be a bit more diverse. As you walk around the tank there's different viewing areas and a glass hallway where you see stuff on either side and above you.

I posted a few videos of it on YouTube awhile back. My camera definitely doesn't hold up to the quality of the HD stuff but you get the idea. Certainly a must see if you head to Georgia.

1479  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Do you still get excited for games by id? on: July 22, 2009, 05:46:38 PM
I'm not as excited about this game as I was Doom 3. But Doom 3 was their last real company produced game which was 5 years ago. Back then what you could still do with a 3D engine was quite new. We were amazed by real-time lighting effects, physics and even simple stuff like enemies that could interact with the environment. Since then there's been a lot of impressive 3D engines (Half-Life/Fear/Crysis) and there doesn't seem to be the huge jump in technology used in these engines that are mind blowing anymore. It's mainly improvement on graphics/physics.

I didn't see anything in the Rage preview that had me asking how they did that or wondering if I was looking at something real-time or CG.

I'm sure there's going to be some neat unexpected technology improvements but based on what I've seen so far I'm not jumping out of my seat in excitement for it like their last game.
