Just a heads up it looks like Netflix is adding episodes of Season 2 to their streaming service soon after they air. This was a helpful find for me as the DVR was starting to fill up.
1402  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: 12 sci-fi shows that dies too soon on: November 19, 2009, 12:55:00 AM
There were five seasons of "Al!" "Sam!" "Damn it Ziggy!". That's enough.
1403  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: 12 sci-fi shows that dies too soon on: November 17, 2009, 07:49:05 PM
Dunno if I'd put Bionic Woman in there even though I did watch it but didn't care that it got canceled. I would add Journeyman in there as I felt disheartened once it got pulled. The underling plot and the writing for that show was really better than most stuff on TV at the time. They ended it without getting to explain why these people were time traveling and having that loose thread hanging sucks.

My honorable mentions:

The Lost Room - would have liked to seen this continue as a series but am ok where it ended
4400 - even though after season 2 it started to suck would have been nice to have some closure
Moonlight - despite being a chick show the ongoing story was pretty decent and I likely would have watched a second season...or two.

Wow. I actually said "that's the best game trailer ever" after I watched it. Wasn't expecting that at all.

Has anyone used one of the bluetooth > IR converters (like ps3toothfairy) to control the PS3 with a universal remote? I'm considering a PS3 as a replacement to my current DVD player but also looking for good solutions for having my universal remote control it for movies.

I did see someone walking around with one of these today (the floaty one). So the price looks justified if people are going to buy them.

Did the Netflix streaming on this series as a lark awhile back and after getting past the first few episodes I was surprised how much I enjoyed the whole thing. I'm definitely in for season 2.

Is there a way to see what addons and such are part of my account without rejoining and logging in?

I don't think you can without being able to log in and managing your account.

There may be a site that tracks Wow characters and displays their armor and what not. I know EQ2 has something like that on a few pages. If there's a page like that then you may be able to see their status.

I seem to recall reading that the boxed version comes with a nice manual or something. Any pros/cons buying the digital version vs. boxed? Also it looks like you can get the original boxed version for about $20. That can be upgraded to this version correct?

Same issue here. Cancelled the account in 2005 some time - just got email(s) about it being banned like you. I did manually log on the account - and that also says I am banned. So it is legit. No clue where to go from here. I emailed them but from my work email account because I couldn't get my 'official wow' email account to work from work for some reason.  I am locked out of my account maintenance so I can't change the email addr. round and around we go.

I have a new comptuer and Wow is not even installed - infact - I don't even think it is installed on my now 'old'  comptuer I used for the last year and a half - So unless they got my account info back in 2005 - the only way they could have gotten it sence then is from bizzard. Not from my machine.

So this whole account takeover ended interesting enough with KT making out like a bandit. To recap KT and I haven't played WoW since 2005. In 2008 KT got an email saying she had been banned from the service and could not access her account.

This weekend I had an odd hankering to play WoW and had two Burning Crusade Trial disks sitting on my shelves since around 2007. So we decided "why not?" and began the long patch process for entering WoW. I got in fine and all my characters were there. KT on the other hand couldn't access her account as it had been banned for "exploitation of the World of Warcraft economy or for being associated to accounts which have been  closed for intended exploitation." She went through the process of getting the account back by sending Blizzard a scan of her drivers license.

Blizzard responded promptly the next day and she had her account back. From the account history we could see someone paid for a complete month in 2008 and then entered in a 60-day game card after that. 5 days after they put in the 60-day game card they got banned from WoW. By now we pretty much feared the worst figuring the account had been stripped clean.

Things got worse when KT couldn't get in to the Burning Crusade trial. It kept saying the account was ineligible. With a little investigation we turned up that the Burning Crusade expansion was already added. So whomever had control of the account actually purchased the expansion.

We weren't sure what to do at that point. It looked like we would have to pony up the $15 to see the account. Thankfully there was a 10-day trial for the Wrath of the Lich King and KT was able to use that one to get in to the game.

What we discovered kinda blew us away. Not only were all her characters still there with everything on them but her main character had gone from L55 to L70 and was all decked out and on a flying mount.

It could have ended badly but whatever Blizzard was doing to track this stuff and effectively disable the account so only the original owner can get back at it seems to work pretty week. Kudos to them.

that reminds me of Heartbeeps.

I'm sad to say I saw both of those movies in theaters and remember it. Hell I can recall acting like I was Super Fuzz on the playground.

Nice little trivia about Heartbeeps - John Williams wrote the score for it.

Another movie I saw in theaters I kinda want to add to this group is Saturday the 14th. I only vaguely recall it but I get the sense it was fun.  One for sure I'll add to the list is Modern Problems with Chevy Chase.
1413  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Trek Online (Cryptic's "other" new MMO) on: October 23, 2009, 06:50:11 PM
There seems to be speculation they're letting people in in waves. Which I guess makes sense if they're trying to limit bandwidth problems. For Champions Online it was awful on the open beta launch day just trying to get in the game. They had screwed up the pre-launch beta downloads and instead of having all those pre-downloads install a small file it started installing the whole 2gig game. The downloading was so slow as everyone else was trying to do the same thing. So if they're doing the waves it may be to avoid having it take a full day for people to download the game.

It would be nice to have them explain what their plans are for adding people.

I haven't gotten an email invite yet either.

I think he's talking about the remakes from Rob Zombie.  IMHO, they're weak sauce when compared to the brilliance of the original, Carpenter film(s).  I love Rob's music and his enthusiasm for the horror genre, but he really did mess up the Halloween franchise.

No, meant Halloween 3: Season of the Witch. Which like metallicorphan was the first in the series I saw. Haven't seen the Rob Zombie remakes yet.

It didn't really seem to pick up at all this season after a nice buildup of last. Unless the rest of the season rocks I'd be ok with seeing it die out. It's no Journeyman.

I wish there was more to the final boss fight than what there was but by the time I got to that point I was pretty satisfied with the game so was fine with it ending. I ended up at L28 with 12k gold and 10 learning points I couldn't decide what to use with. I was a battle-mage with L7 sword skill and L10 frost skill.

Skills I found most useful:

- lockpicking
- sneak
- alchemy (for + stat potion)
- pickpocket (L2 worked well)
- smithing (for later in the game when working with obsidian)

I didn't find much use for scroll or rune casting even though I maxed both those.

Great game overall. I went ahead and installed Gothic 2 Gold as lot of people seem to be comparing this one to that. Hopefully I can get past the horrid controls this time.

1420  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: World War Z Movie on: October 14, 2009, 06:46:54 PM
Just a heads up the The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks graphic novel is out now. It's basically an anthology where it shows zombie outbreaks over the years - starting with cavemen. The art in the book is really good. Lots of detail and not a wasted frame - which is important as there isn't a whole lot of text here. I went through the book in about an hour and got from it about what I expected.

There's a few memorable stories including a gruesome zombie domino effect aboard a slave ship and a story about some Russian Cossacks that get whats coming to them. But my favorite of the bunch would have to be a story involving the French Foreign Legion who get little warning about an army of undead coming their way. I could see that one being made in to a TV style movie.

If you liked World War Z or the original Survival Guide this is a nice addition to add to the collection.
1421  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Champions Online (Cryptic's new MMO) on: October 12, 2009, 04:52:03 PM
Hmm interesting. There is mission later on in the game where you get a similar injection that does the same thing but you can't use it outside of that mission. But I can't see the connection between Mr. Zombie and that mission so it may be a mistake rather than some early tie-in, which would be nice.

Was pretty bored by this episode. I liked the setup focusing on the recent high profile celebrity deaths but the Six Sense parody's is overdone, the Poltergeist one wasn't funny and the Ghost Hunter one was basically one joke for 5 minutes. When it got to Michael Jackson I thought it would improve but him trying to win a pageant? Pretty lame.

With all the dead celebs they had to choose from it seemed to me they missed a great opportunity by primarily focusing on just the two - and really Billy Mays???

Was that Chipolte bleeding thing based on a news story or something? The whole thing had me going "huh?"

1427  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Guitar Hero: Van Halen on: October 06, 2009, 03:14:37 AM
For those that sent in for the free copy you should be getting it soon. I just got mine in the mail today and I sent it out a week or so ago after GH5 launch. You don't get much with it. Just a sleeve containing the disc and some pamphlets for Band Hero and GH:WT.

I played a few of the songs and really enjoyed myself. I was a big Halen fan so kicking the game off with Panama was great and only got better once Running With the Devil came up as an encore. I'm playing on medium and both those songs felt just right with the notes that were popping up (for guitar) so it gives a great illusion of playing that shit. The entire band is on stage in their younger form...although Michael Anthony didn't look quite right to me. I'm also guessing this was back in the days where everyone was getting along because the few times I could look up Dave and Eddie were sharing some toothy grins singing together.

There is a career mode where you play as VH and earn money and then for the non-VH songs you create your own band ('Spotted Dick' in my case) from the GH cast and play those. You can use the money you earn to purchase new outfits and equipment. I didn't see much else there to purchase but didn't really look in to it too much. I just checked out Billy Idols White Wedding which was boring to 'play' on guitar but a fun song nonetheless and some Blink 182 song I almost got 100% on; missed the last goddamn note!

It looks like you cut back and forth between playing as Halen and then your generic band at each venue you unlock. There's some extras for the Halen content where you can see the Lyrics or facts about the song as it plays. Didn't see much else but only played a bit so far. Thumbs up for free.

Saw it today. There were a total of 7 people in the theatre which should tell you how quick this one will be around.

The beginning of the film is great and reminded me a lot of the movie Cube. You got two people who wake up with only some memory of who they are and try and piece together things based on what little they know and the few clues they have to work with.

The movie starts going downhill once they come across their first monster. Then the film switches from smart psychological sci-fi to Resident Evil complete with lame characters, actiony sequences, and other unbelievable stuff. It stays with that almost till the end. Then the last 2 minutes of movie were great.

I really wished they kept the tone that the movie began with. That would have been a much better and more interesting picture.

Its still worth a rental or better Netflix streaming.

I'm still trying to lock down a good gaming podcast. The 1UP podcast so far seems the most professional out of the ones I've listen too. CAG was pretty decent too but that Wombat guy is annoying to the point where he ruins things. Joystiq seems to be similar where there's the one annoying juvenile guy. Unfortunately that guy was substituting for the main host during the podcast I listened to. At one point when Ludwig (I think) was giving their impressions of Mini Ninja's, a game I was curious to hear a bit about, the host jumped in and basically said they only want to hear about real games - which I gathered were any FPS or games with lots of explosions. I'll have to give it another listen when the main host is back. Hopefully whomever it was that was hosting that podcast is normally put on a short leash.

I'm pretty new to podcasts. I recently replaced my ancient MP3 player with a Zune (not HD) which has opened up the podcast world to me. I'm interested in hearing favorites for ones to check out.

Also curious to which computer gaming ones you listen to? There are so many to choose from that I'd rather cut to the chase of finding the good ones. So far I've tried an IGN and 1UP. I didn't care so much for the IGN podcast, which was focused on gaming gadgets, but did see there were other IGN podcasts. I did like the 1UP podcast so may subscribe to that one.

Got to play the Crisis at Monster Island PQ which introduces the zone over the weekend. That was some amazing fun and a great way to introduce the zone. I really wish they didn't wait till around L30 to start introducing some of the more involved quests (e.g. Dr Destroyers Factory and that brain lab in Canada). If they had a bunch of those from the get-go a think a lot more people would be grouping together in the long run.

At level 26 now and haven't hit a content gap yet. But there have been plenty of points where I've been doing missions marked 1 or 2 levels above me. Since hitting 20 or so I've been having to run around between Canada/Desert/Millennium City to get quests within my level. Whenever I dry up in the area I'm in I just use the crime computer to tell me where to go.

I also notice that after PvP my experience bar will typically go up a tick and I'll do PvP for short spurts.
1439  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Official 2009 American Idol Thread on: September 10, 2009, 07:01:12 PM
Ellen was a guest judge on last seasons So You Think You Can Dance. She was only there for a single night and basically wore out her welcome by the end. She was funny but offered nothing in her critiques other than one-liners. You knew she had no business judging the dancers which made the whole thing lose the little bit of credibility it has. Thankfully it was just the single night.

Dunno how she's going to bring anything extra to American Idol. Would rather they just go back to the 3 judge panel with what they already have. Hell if they were so hard up for a 4th judge they should have brought in one of the former contestants as they would have something to bring to the critiques.

If they bring back the judges save again this year along with this then that Simon Fuller guy is way out of touch with the audience.
1440  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Champions Online Open Beta impressions (starting Aug. 17) on: September 02, 2009, 03:43:55 AM
From all the complaints about the nerf I was expecting the game to be impossible to play. After several hours I didn't notice too much difference than before. With my solo character I was completing missions just fine but did notice battles were slightly longer (electricity build with no defensive/offensive buffs). I did have one super villain battle which lasted about 30 seconds (20 seconds more than usual) but still was not a close battle. It was nice to see the villain laster longer, as they were able to get off several powers during the course of the battle. Normally they get off 1 charged attack and then be dead.

Playing as a team (2 players) was little different than before. We were still plowing through mobs and multiple ones. Triple health mobs did take a bit longer to kill but other than two or three times where we got overwhelmed I didn't feel in danger.

So I'm not sure what all the complaints are about. Even in the game chat people were complaining of nerfs. From what I've seen the game still needs to be tweaked to make things more difficult.
