1401  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Steam Weekend MMO sale on: June 14, 2009, 03:28:12 AM
I went in for AoC since I was always curious about that one. 7hr+ download. Let it go over night. Then in the morning it started patching. After about an hour of pointless 1 file patching segments I cancled it and did other things. Then I ran the game again and it had a whole new interface for the patching process and was downloading, first a 60MB file and then a 2GB file. Which was better than the single file patching which kept inturrupting anything else I was trying to do on the computer. But still from install that was like over 10hrs to get this game running.

Actually it didn't run at first. Each time I hit play the launcher would close and then re-start, then go in to a loop. After cruising the web looking for solutions I found there was some launcher looping issues. I deleted some files, tried to stop things in task manager, ran the game software checkup, rebooted. Nothing was working. Then I finally came across a lone post that said the Steam launcher doesn't work for the game. You had to go in to the install folder and run the files manually. Ugh.

So not a smooth start to the game but once I got in the game I was pretty pleased. Neat classes and the game looks fantastic. But after the free month I'm dropping it. Hopefully they'll do this again as I would be curious to try Eve.

I don't mind the Tony's so much. There's gotta be some cannon fodder in the show for the first few weeks before you get invested in some of the dancers.

I do have to say that this year it seems like they've picked a lot of great dancers based on the initial performance show. And for those that are interested Cat Deeley is supposed to have a running blog on EW.com. Hopefully it'll give some good background info on the show.
1403  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: D&D Online Free to Play! on: June 09, 2009, 07:02:42 PM
This was released before LOTRO, so the graphics are not as good but they're decent enough. Dungeons are pretty fun as they aren't the standard kill 1,000 mobs, kill boss. Each dungeon has a small story to follow and you'll encounter puzzles and what not. I remember their UI wasn't the best and took a bit of getting used to. Combat isn't as smooth as some other MMOs but tends to be a bit more involved.

The dungeons offer a unique experience as you get experience from completing them (not killing monsters)but its not always the best. Because of the D&D mechanic you have a limited number of spells/abilities you can use. There are "rechargers" in the dungeon but they have a limited reuse and are rare - often you need to fight several monsters just to get in those rooms. So you sometimes have to hold back on using spells/abilities while going through the dungeon. While that does add a new layer of strategic play its also quite fun to be able to let loose as you please. Often by the end of the dungeon all I could do was swing away at monsters with my basic attack.

I played in a 2 person group which didn't work so well in D&D Online. In most MMOs a 2 person group is fine for most stuff. In this game the dungeons tended to be either too difficult for 2 players or too easy. So the experience could range from being frustrating to boring. The game is definitely built around either soloing it (there are solo versions of the dungeons) or working with a 4-6 person group.

I should note I'm speaking from playing this thing about 2 years ago and I jumped back in to the game for a free weekend about a year ago. So they may have tweaked the dungeon experience to accommodate smaller groups better.

I might give it another shot with the free version. It sounds like its somewhat limited (free stuff I mean) but probably work checking out whats new.

I must be one of the few that actually liked Cars. I'd put Up in the good not great category. I do have to say it had the funniest elderly fight sequences I've seen. I just wish it went on a bit longer.

I didn't care for the short this time around. A neat idea but found the whole thing rather dull.
1405  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: So You Think You Can Dance Season 5 on: May 22, 2009, 05:07:04 PM
Yeah, it already looks like there's a few competitors you can really get behind and root for.

Anyone put off a bit by Nigels comments to the two guys doing the samba or whatever it was? Took me aback that he didn't try to use much tact in his comments. I have to admit it was distracting and neither guy seemed that great. Mary's comments seemed a bit more helpful with explaining how it was distracting to not have a lead and each guy would mirror what the other one did.

I'm looking forward to seeing the roomate of last years winner. Her dancing is similar to Katee's so I'm expecting stellar dacing.

1407  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Warhammer Online: Land of the dead 720p trailer on: May 13, 2009, 02:23:33 AM
I'm still playing it. Although getting sick of the T4 on my particular server as Order has been in defense mode for about a month now as Destruction has so many more players on their end at the moment.

Land of the Dead is a free expansion. It's basically one zone with all new quests (PQ and PvE). The big mechanic is the new dungeon which I believe is geared towards a small group (6). Only one side Order/Destruction can open access to the dungeon at a time. However if the opposing faction opens access while you are in there they can go in and muck things up for your group by either trying to kill you or enable traps.

They had a preview of the expansion on X-Play and it looks like it could be fun. There's some consolish moments in the dungeon where you're fighting over sized bosses and some of the room mechanics looked fun - like one room where you had run and jump along these fallen columns to get through the room, if you missed and hit the ground monsters would spawn. It sounds like the entire dungeon will be full of those types of rooms.
1408  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Official 2009 American Idol Thread on: May 08, 2009, 06:38:02 PM
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Is what I said when Alison got voted off - complete with me busting through some straps holding my arms and legs down. Or maybe those were my cats. Come to think of it I haven't see them around lately.

Anyways it sucks that she's gone from the competition but I read she's going to be performing on the finale. So yay. I do have to say her second run through of Cry Baby was a lot better than her original. She really seemed to loosen up and just let go with her exit performance. Guess it helps to have the pressure off.

The Cris Daughtry new song didn't do much for me. Just generic rock but he has a pretty decent voice.

Gwen is too old to be doing the No Doubt thing now. She looked silly stalking on and off stage at her age. It didn't help she seemed out of breath after coming down the steps at the start. But in the end it didn't matter as the drummer in the tutu showed it could have been far worse.

And WTF Paul? Kindly. WTF! That was a lip syncing disaster. Scott MacIntyre has nothing on you. Is it really that hard to flap your jaw when you hear your voice? Not enough practice doing it in the judges chair eh? Plus, you're a singer (sorta) and couldn't even manage to really sing in front of the contestants that you are judging? For shame! And didn't you realize there was something wrong with your recording? It had all this electronical/robotic twang to it. Poor Jamie Fox had that same issue. Someone at Idol needs to be fired ASAP as we couldn't hear either of you actually sing.

And yes I know that paragraph is directed squarely at Paula reading this. Who says she's not a Gaming Trend reader?
1409  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Official 2009 American Idol Thread on: May 06, 2009, 07:46:53 PM
Ieeeyaaaaaah that was probably one of the better idol shows. Iaaayyyyyeeee really enjoyed Adam's performance even though it didn't vary too much from the source it was just too entertaining not to like.

AAaaaaahhhhhlison was decent but another one I didn't care for as much as I thought I would. She's still a much better performer than Matt and Kris so I can never understand why Simon keeps harping on the no personality thing. That criticism seems overdone.

My Wiiiiiiiaaaaaaahhhhhfe put it best when she described Kris performance lacking the vocal oomph needed for that song. But I do have to give him credit for at least trying to change up the song somewhat vocally more than the other contestants did with theirs.

Oh Gokey. This is the first time I am glad he's still in the competition. As soon as he started that screech I began laughing and it just kept getting worse. Then at the end of it he was going "thank you" "thank you" which had me laughing even more. You could see the shock on his face when the judges gave him the bad news. You could almost read his thoughts at the moment (...lord Jesus thank you for helping me rock that song...look at the crowd is going wild...Randy can't even talk....shhhh lovely people...shhh...let me hear Randy tell me...tell this Christan loving world...praise Jesus...how I could record that and have a #1 hit....shhh now...he's going to speak...he's going to spread the gospel about how gre...whatwhatwhat!!!??) before he lamely said he would need to review the tape.

The Kris and Danny duet sucked except for the parts where they harmonized. They actually sounded really well together. Whereas I don't think Adam and Alison sounded that great together. However Adam and Allison's performance was the more entertaining duet and they really did look like they were having fun playing off of each other which made it enjoyable to watch.

My hope is the final three will be Adam, Alison and Kris but I don't see that happening.

Finally did I catch Kara suggesting that Danny should have done a song from early Aerosmith rather than the one he did? I was still laughing too much at the time but if she did suggest that how much earlier does she expect him to go?
1410  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Official 2009 American Idol Thread on: April 29, 2009, 07:29:27 PM
This night turned out far better than I thought it would after hearing the genre of music. No really bad performances [other than Matt] so I don't have too much to complain about [other than Matt] but will do so anyways.

I really like Allisons voice and performance but this is the first time I've noticed that she doesn't pronounce the words fully. It sounded like she was mumbling a few times which took me out of the performance.

Kris was alright but I think he may be in trouble too tonight as nothing about that set him apart from the others. It was a "nice" performance - definitely in the bottom 3.

My *almost* surprise moment of the night came from Danny, who [other than Matt] I don't really care for. When he started out his singing sounded great. Fantastic in fact as he toned it down and just sounded smooth. Then about 15 seconds in his voice began to bottom out and got a bad sound to it. Then he launched in to the same yelling routing and ruined the whole thing.  Bleh. And what's with the "thank you" "thank you" and love signs he was doing after the performance? Damn, he could have turned me around with that performance if he delivered on how he began the song.

Adams performance totally blew me away though. At the end of it I was like "WTF did I just see there?". I was actually stunned at how good that was. I came very close to rewinding the DVR to watch it again and I've never done that. My wife made a comment that she can't wait to see him in concert (I'll skip that one) but its a good point. Which of these guys would you actually pay $50 to see in concert? If I had to choose I think Adam and Allison would both have pretty entertaining concerts. I'm not so sure about Kris or Danny - is there someone else I'm missing?
1411  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Best Buy $10 game sale on: April 27, 2009, 06:03:16 PM
I went to the BB near here after 1pm (yesterday) figuring I wouldn't find much but was surprised that they had multiplies of just about every game listed there on it's own sales rack right in the games department. It wasn't labeled very good that these stacks of games were on sale - each one had a tiny $9.99 sticker on it, sometimes on the top of the case.

In any case I was easily able to get the three games I was looking for - Condemned 2, Silent Hill: Homecoming, and Ninja Gaiden DS.

Red Alert was tempting but would rather play that on the PC.

1413  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Robert Rodriguez's Predators on: April 24, 2009, 07:14:20 PM
I just got AvP2 on Netflix. Boy that movie stunk. About 60 minutes in they seemed to bail on the story and copied Aliens, complete with the same lines from that film. The Predators really lost the cool factor since the sequels/spinoffs were made so hopefully this reboot will bring that back.
1414  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Gamersgate Weekend Deal: Space Siege 75% off on: April 24, 2009, 07:06:15 PM
Is GamersGate a download service where you need to have the client installed to run the game? I've been waiting for this game to get super cheap, and that price certainly is, but want to avoid having to download yet another download client.
1415  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: "Quiet" Radeon 4850? on: April 24, 2009, 06:55:53 PM
Yeah. I had ordered a replacement GeForce card for the one that bit the dust. Then thought this might just be an opportunity to put in the best video card my computer could handle, which was the 4850. Not a huge improvement over the 8800GT but definitely noticeable in many games, Particularly in Warhammer Online which allowed me to play with all graphics maxed when there where a lot of people on the screen at once.

The performance improvement won me over the sound of the fan which I would stop noticing a bit after starting up a game. So I kept the 4850 and sent the 9800GT back.

I haven't looked at after market coolers before. That would just replace the existing video card fan? I haven't looked how the fan is attached but I imagine an adhesive of some sort.

Soviet Kitsch by Regina Spektor

If you've never heard her, I can sum her up in one sentence: Tori Amos without the rape.  Talented and often very amusing songwriter.
This one was a few days ago but just spent some time listening to it. The first few songs I was like WTF as there's some odd lyrics and melody changes. But as I continued I got in to it and looked forward to those quirky moments in her songs. When I finished I had to listen to it again.  Very unique - and I like the accent.

I'd say she sounds a bit more like Bijork than Tori Amos, especially with her lyrics but she definitely has the Tori flavor with the piano. Her myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/reginaspektor) has a bunch of song selections but only one off this album (Us) which happens to be one of my favorites from it.

I ended up buying her other album that has some odd stuff but looks like she went more current ditching the piano for a more traditional pop/rock sound in many of her songs. It's not bad but a bit different than this one. I was a bit annoyed at Amazon for not making the Prince Caspian song a single download as I'd like to get that too but I can live without.

I have the 4850 (one of the early ones with the craptastic loud fan) and it's a great card except for the fan/noise.  I do have the manual fan control setting on my ATI overdrive tab...what driver version are you using?  And do you have the full CCC package installed?

It looks like it's the latest Catalyst version (8.6). I created a profile and manually edited the profile file to turn the fan down but it doesn't appear to be working for some reason. It sounds just as noisy any speed I change it to.
1419  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Official 2009 American Idol Thread on: April 15, 2009, 06:28:12 PM
I'm rooting for Allison but year she didn't quite fit with that song. She didn't sound all that great either and I like her voice. I was floored by the gushing comments from Paula and Simon over that crummy performance. When they've been so harsh on many of her previous fantastic performances  ("you got talk more" wha...?) this definitely came across to me like they had a pre-written comment script.

Kris's song choice was neat since I love that album, but not "love love love dawg" the album like Randy. That's a difficult song to get across in 2 minutes and I don't think he succeeded especially if there's already complaints here about not recognizing the song which is another strike in peoples books. If it was Top 5 he would normally be in trouble for something like that but I don't see it here.

I think California came close to a power outage with Adam's song. They threw every light trick they had at that performance.  It was fun to watch but probably one of my least favorite by him.

I think Anoop, Lil and Matt are bottom three. Anoop did the best out of those three. I'm hoping either Matt or Anoop go as I'd like Lil to stay around for another week. I'd be happy if she actually does something amazing but equally fine if she does another dreadful song exposing how off the judges were with their early praise.

And was it me or was Quentin Tarrintino trying to mask a huge pot belly? Something was not quite right there in some of those mentor videos. It was also a bit odd with him offering singing advice as he's just a fan of the show and doesn't actually have a music background.

Finally when Kara was giving "critique" on a performance there was a shot of the judges table and you could see Simon trying to hack something up. What was that about?
1420  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: "Quiet" Radeon 4850? on: April 14, 2009, 06:09:37 PM
Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I think my best bet is to try and turn the RPMs down on the fan. The Help Files indicated that when the card starts to heat up it will spin faster until cool then go back to whatever speed you set it at. The only problem with is I can't locate the fan speed controls. The Help Files say they are in the Catalyst Overdrive tab but it looks like I can only control the clock speeds there.

Anyone familiar with this? According to the Help Files my card does support fan control.
1421  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / "Quiet" Radeon 4850? on: April 13, 2009, 06:41:29 PM
My GeForce 8800GT card bit the dust a few days ago so I took it as an opportunity to upgrade to a Radeon 4850, which is the fastest video card my computer would be able to support.  However, whereas the GeForce 8800GT was basically silent the VisionTek Radeon 4850 fan is annoyingly loud. On the plus side games do actually run a bit faster.

I hate having to compromise sound level with performance gain and was hoping someone might know of a 4850 card that is a bit quieter? Each one I look at seems to have this huge fan attached to it.

Thanks.

It's odd but I've found Paula to be rather clear headed this year. She actually has a lot of constructive things to say to the contestants. It takes her forever to get to her point but the advice and criticism she is delivering is usually dead on.

Ah, the Canadian forest set that they always seem to use. biggrin

Or at least wherever they're situated when they taped these shows.

O'Neal makes a crack about all the planets looking like forests in one of the early episodes which was a nice way to poke fun at their limited filming locations. The show was definitely done on the cheap with limited resources but it makes do just fine. Even the episodes where they go all out to create a unique look to the planet it never comes off as spectacular. But its the characters and stories that make it all work.

It looks like its still alive. Played through it in alpha/beta and except for a few elements (dragon playable race and crafting) it was all ho-hum. My wife tried to subscribe to the game about a year after it launched to see if there was anything new. She had a hell of a time getting through the billing process. It was like they were purposely making it difficult to take your money. When she finally got through the game wouldn't launch. It was subsequently uninstalled and the subscription canceled.

So the price they have listed here seems a bit high.

Here are 9 comments from the results show last night*

1. The live group performance lip-sync changed to a taped group performance lip-sync. It was bad before but this is even worse. Will they do that on the tour?

2. The Adam/Lil/Danny Judges Save is a farce and they should cut their loses and just use it on the next show regardless who is slated to go home just to make the whole thing null.

3. I forgot how much Ruben sweats.

4. The Joss Stone/Smokey Robinson duet was both awful and creepy. For some reason I couldn't tear my self away.

9. I wasn't feeling Stevie at all even though he tried to bring some life to the show. And wasn't that supposed to be a Motown medley? It sounded just like snippets of Stevie songs. And someone's gotta keep Stevie away from the bon bons! Had to be said.

* Using Kara Dioguardi mathmatics

But perhaps this comes more in to play with big ticket items like HDTVs.

I also had too many questions about what effect seeding the planet with people would have. First of all, English would have been the dominant language worldwide, and there would be sudden evidence of complex tools being used, even if they got rid of all of their existing technological equipment. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

You know those cylons that took off with the base ship? On their way past Jupiter they said "screw this" turned the ship around and came back guns a blazing. Only Hera survived.

The Judges Save was all drama without any meaning again last night. Anyone notice how the judges were barely paying attention to Alexis' performance when she was singing for her life? I think Simon looked up for a bit when she walked towards the judges table but no one else was paying attention which indicated to me the whole thing is a farce.

Not that its going to change much but that whole element is as unnecessary as the judges walking out from behind the stage on the competition night.

Out the final 2 up there Alexis should have been the one staying but neither of those two had a shot in hell at winning as is.

Caught up on the season this weekend (On Demand). So far its an ok season. No one is standing out to me as someone I really want to root for although Taj is at least perking my interest as she's seems the be the only one willing to add some strategy. I do have to say that challenge where they spun the people on a top was one of the most hilarious challenges in any season - although a bit out of place for the show overall.

Coach is definitely the Ace of this season. You can't wait to see him go down and be humiliated.

Spent at least 4 years playing it. Started in one of the early betas and finally stopped playing after the Shadows of Luclin addon. I went back to it late last year when they re-activated everyones account for a month and you could download the game + all expansions and play it for free. Had a lot of fun revisiting all those areas and seeing some of the changes that were made. But had no desire to go back to it. Its still a grindfest with a complicated UI (remember you can only memorize about 8 spells at a time) and I'm spoiled by the ease of todays MMO's.

What's fantastic about that game is I still come across some of the guild members on other MMOs I've played over the years.

Gotta say it again, this is the best PC gaming deal out there. $60 a year for a large variety of games with 2 games added weekly. Plus a single account comes with the ability to create logins for family members, I think up to 3, at no extra charge. So I have my own account and I created a login for my wife so she can play any of the subscription games on her own computer at no additional fee. This is my 3rd year on it and we both use the service regularly.

Here's a page where you can see a listing of all their games: http://www.gametap.com/video-games/premium-games

The main complaints I read about the service are:

- You don't get to keep the games after the service ends
- Can't use 3rd party mods
- Games not always patched to latest version
- Minor Mac support
- No support for Windows 64-bit operating systems (although that's supposed to be supported soon)

None of these issues have bothered me and I think the pluses outweigh the negatives. There's such a large variety of games and I've discovered quite a few gems I normally wouldn't have purchased or wanted and never got around to it.

I'd watch a Boba Fett: Body Hunter series.

I'm hoping for a buddy cop series staring Boba Fett and Jar Jar.

J.J. & the Fett?

If it's on Fox - Dollhutt: The Leia Organa Chronicles

Han Solo travels back in time to warn Leia that judgement day is coming to Alderaan but the bitch's been mind wiped by some crime lord and now thinks she's a wookie.

What?

I don't like the judges' save rule. As justification Ryan points to contestants like Chris Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson who were voted out early. Bad examples - they went on to be superstars! Winning American Idol isn't necessarily the golden ticket to fame - sometimes getting the boot is a GOOD thing.

I agree with that. It also adds some emotional value to the show when someoned good gets voted out. Then the next day at work you get to bitch about it with your co-workers and say stuff like "Did you vote for them! No!? Me either." Plus the Daughtry thing wouldn't have mattered with this rule as he was voted out in the 4th round and this is only good up till the 5th.

I would put Doom 3 up there as a scary game. Headphones + lights out made for a frightening experience. I would have put Dead Space in there as that was just outright creepy and had plenty of scares.

I started playing Undying again a few weeks ago. It doesn't hold up quite as well as I recall. But I remember the initial time through it was pretty freak'n scary.
