Parvity wuz robbed!

Another bitter jury that had a difficult time putting personal feelings aside for gameplay. While I was ok with Sandra winning I don't think she deserved it as she really didn't have much game. The only moves she had that I can remember were 1) Playing on Russells fears and getting him to vote out Coach. 2) Finding an Hidden Immunity Idol (HII). Parvity seemed to be gunned for since day 1 even by the Hero tribe before they merged (the JT letter). She also made one of the biggest plays of the game giving away the two hidden immunity idols (one to Sandra no less) to keep the Villains with the majority after the merge. Plus having to tip-toe with Russell to keep him from feeling like she was betraying him could not have been easy for 39 days.

But it seemed like most of the jury already made up their minds on who they would vote for before they got there. I've never seen a final tribal council with so few questions. It was mainly all statements. That means the remaining survivors don't have the opportunity to sell themselves so they just have to sit there and see how the votes play out. It robs both the jury members and viewers or any interesting insights the survivors can provide as well as sway votes based on their responses.

They need to tweak the final tribal council and allow the survivors to respond to jury members if they make a statement. Or bring back the option to plead a final case where the survivors can address some of statements the jury has brought up.

In any case Russell does a terrible job at selling himself at the end. On par with Amanda. Given what they showed at the jury and on the reunion show he has no end game. Given the last few episodes he was really shooting himself in the foot in getting votes. Out of everyone on this season though I'd put Russell in spot #2 for top player with Parvity still winning at #1.

Speaking of the #2 spot. How the hell could Rupert be #2 for that Sprint favorite player vote? What was likable about Rupert this season? And how did Erik not win for dumbest Survivor moves? He had the haircut to prove it. Speaking of dumb - Colby. But he did have one interesting insight about not allowing the contestants to go in the water or jungle. I wonder what that decision was about - and agree it takes the adventure out of the game.

Overall one of the best seasons of Survivor despite another finale let down.

I honestly don't see how any season of Survivor will ever be able to compare with this one again.

I agree. The last few seasons have topped the one preceeding it. For me it started with Fans vs Favorites (Season 16) which I thought was almost as entertaining as the original.

Last night's flip almost felt like it was more for our entertainment than it was for strategy.  While in principle I agreed it was to his best interest to split the girls, did he really have to do it so stupidly?  I guess you can argue that crap worked in his original season against the dumb chicks he was with, but he's already seen how crafty Parvati is, did he really think he could get away with playing the 2 of them against each other?

I think he lost his mind around there. The only thing I can think of why he did it when he did it was he had immunity so whatever he did it couldn't hurt him that night. In past Survivor episodes when people win the immunity idol they sometimes get in everyone's face. But the tactic he used was not deftly done by a long shot.

They should just end it here because next season is poised to be a real letdown.

I know. How much better can it get? Although like I mentioned before the last 4 seasons have topped the one before. But I gotta think it has peaked at 20.

What they do need to do for the next season is make the hidden immunity idols all look like Russell.
1403  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains on: May 07, 2010, 06:45:43 PM
That episode was all sorts of crazy. With mainly Russell losing his mind...and pants. That was some bat shit, lost in the jungle for days, type of thinking working Parvity and Danielle that way. Kudo's to Parvity for calling Russells bluff. That was a great scene where Russell saw his whole ploy fall apart and he didn't know what to do but yell and get angry. But also kudos to Russell for making Danielle cry at tribal, making me laugh at the "I was testing youuuuu" comment and confusing the hell out of Jerri to get her to change her vote at tribal. When was the last time you've seen someone on tribal go to and change their vote based on what was said?

I'm trying to figure out how Russell thinks he going to win now. Danielle seemed like a shoe in to me to get 0 votes at the final tribal. Parvity is the much bigger threat. Right now I don't see a single person on the jury voting for Russell based on the last few days - except for JT who still thinks Russell is surviving that All Girls Alliance. If Russell makes it to the end with Colby and Rupert will he get any votes still? Probably Candice's vote.

The biggest threats in the game right now for winning seem to be Parvity and Sandra. I have to say for barely being seen at all until the last few episodes Sandra is doing everything right - she says just enough or nothing at all. Plus that HII find helps.

Speaking of that I loved the idea of reading the HII clue in front of everyone.

BTW you can now vote for the "Dumbest Move" in Survivor history and they'll be giving away a trophy to the winner at the final tribal council:

If they can do it for free great. But somehow I bet any free content will come piecemeal over time which you would blow through within an hour or two when released. I'd pay $30 to get a large content update, covering a wide range of levels, offering many hours of play, and having it all at once.

Or if they're too lazy steal City of Hero's archetect tool and let the playerbase build new stuff.

They need to do something big and soon about the lack of overall content to keep the game fresh.

1406  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Champions Online (Cryptic's new MMO) on: May 06, 2010, 07:20:13 PM
Hopefully the next thing they work on is new L1-L30 content. It gets an A+ in the variety of character creation/classes but its so hard playing through the same exact areas each time you start a new character. I love the class I'm playing but running through those same missions/areas kills the fun.

$30 expansion for those level ranges with a few new "dungeons" and it'd be a sale.

Early on they were showing a video of some guy near the scene that was taking a shirt off or something and had a red shirt beneath it. The news was putting a lot of emphasis on this guy and how odd doing that was (umm..maybe it was hot?). Is the guy that got arrested the same one in the video?

Colby & Rupert need to gang up on Russell and beat the livin' tar outa him.

Before they got 30 feet to him they would have been knocked out by all the Immunity Idols Russell would throw at them.

BTW there was this tidbit from Jeff Probst blog:

"Next season it will take more than just looking under a rock to find a hidden idol.  I won’t give away what we’re doing, but in planning our creative for next season we coined a phrase, “The Russell Factor” and it influenced how we will play the hidden idol next season."
1410  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains on: April 30, 2010, 06:35:48 PM
I think I would have flipped too if I was Candice. If she stuck with the Hero's she would be the first one to go once all the Villains were gone. No changing that short of getting immunity each time. By switching she looks to be at the bottom of the Villains as well but Russell had mentioned to her that he would need to call on her sometime later in the game...or something to that effect. To me that sounded like he was suggesting he would use her to get rid of one of his alliance members (Parvity?) before the end.

So for me that sliver of a promise is better than what was already set in stone. I'd roll the dice.

In the strategic sense of things Russell needs to get rid of Parvity to have a chance at winning. The people that are on the jury and who will be on it hate Parvity but really detest Russell. That'll likely favor Parvity. Plus Parvity had that huge move with playing the two hidden immunity idols - they are not soon to forget that and I bet even some of the hero's will respect that move. Remember none of the hero's saw Russell's battle with Boston Robb and all the amazing tribal council plays he had up until that point. So that's potentially 5 voters who are going to vote  on what they've seen since the merge.

So with that in mind I think Russel would be open to using Candice to get rid of Parvity and bring her to the end. If the final 3 was Russell, Daniele and Candice who would people vote for? Russell would wipe the floor with those two as they didn't do squat.

Attempted the capture the Great Jaggi quest last night and failed - I killed him. But I came away with a lot more information to know when he's primed for capture. Wasted the first trap and tranq bombs using those way too early. Luckily got a few more completing the sub quests but never got to use them.

I wasn't thinking it was going to be that much fun trying to capture an animal but it turned out even more intense than just straight killing. I'll give it another shot tonight.

A need to use traps a lot more - those rock.

Well I know Dirt 2 and Grid are fantastic racers and run great on lower end systems. I've played a bit of Dirt but only recently and think I was spoiled a bit by Dirt 2 so not digging it as much as I probably should be.

No idea how the other racers are. But if you don't have any of those and even have a passing interest in racing games you can't go wrong at that price. Dirt 2 and Grid are worth that alone.

I'm in for Demon Souls and for the wrong reasons.

Its one of those games that looks like it'll be so frustrating I'd probably give up after 30 minutes - so why bother? But at the same time there seems to be a lot of buzz around the unique experience this game offers.

I have a hard time passing up games that offer unique experiences. 5-10 years down the road someone will post a blog entry or a post about great games of 2010 you never played and Demon Souls will listed. Then there will be the two posters leaving comments about how they loved that game and never have played anything like it since. Then I'll be kicking myself for not plucking down the $35 to try it out.

So a bad reason to buy a game.

Aaron did a decent over the top ballad but it was kind of disturbing when he dedicated it to his mom.

Kara's comment to him about him changing the "making love" lyric made it disturbing too. I didn't know the song so wouldn't have known either way if he changed it but that comment just put a horrid image in my head.

In any case I agree with you about the season. I'll stick it out but certainly one of the least entertaining seasons of Idol. I'm ready to skip to the finale. It seems like everyone has peaked so its going to be more of the same until the end.

Part of the problem this year is they've been so restricted in choices. Instead of Country week its Shania Twain songs. Instead of Rock week it was Rolling Stones songs, then McCartney/Lennon, and Elvis songs. Would be nice if they allowed them more freedom of choice so they could pick more current songs they can connect with. That would also dispatch with all the hollow "I'm honored to sing this song" comments.

The show seemed to begin sputtering a bit in this second season which is unfortunate since it started off so great and I love the Cara character. But the stories didn't seem quite as good as the last season. If they had more scenes of Cara and Kahlan in the Underworld the show would have continued on just fine.

I'll have to read the books at some point to see where they planned on taking things - I know the show is only loosely based on the books but the overall aching plot is similar, correct?

Speaking on inventory what items are must have in your inventory?

I typically keep it down to:

Heal Potions
BBQ Spit

Then when I get a quest I'll grab:
+ special items for quest (e.g. flash bombs, tainted meat, etc)

Still finding it difficult not filling up my inventory by the time the quest is complete.
1419  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains on: April 27, 2010, 12:23:32 AM
I was upset Amanda lost to Parvity too but I couldn't blame the votes. Amanada didn't bother to talk about all the things she did in that season to make it to the finale, and I seem to recall she did a hell of a lot. If you can't sell yourself by the end by explaining to people what you did to get there, good or bad and standing behind those decisions, there's little chance to get any votes your way.

BTW my "scripted" comment was directed at how perfectly the episode played out drama wise with an incredible twist at the end.  I don't think the show is influenced and am aware of the editing techniques - which go beyond not showing certain scenes to camera men asking the Survivors to re-enact conversations if they weren't able to get a good shot the initial time it occured. But that's pretty harmless.

I also discovered that, if I put the dungeon floppy in the drive while walking overland, it would start loading blocks of dungeon cells with multiple chests in them and in effect let me loot them for treasure. So in effect I discovered the art of cheating. In a game about virtues.

I remember doing that to. I recall reading about the trick in one of the computer magazines - Family Computing is coming to mind. It was a neat cheat and I remember I used it for both unlimited chests and walking from one island to another. Going from one island to the other was somewhat dangerous as you generated tiles with hallways leading to a dead end meaning you could wind up in the middle of the ocean. But typically the cheat would get you close enough to the island that you could just blink over there when you got stuck.

A fun cheat.

Is there a place where you can purchase/mine/combine to get armor spheres or do they only come as quest rewards? Would like to work on getting a new set of armor but the armor spheres seem to be rare.

Also is there a way to go to the second island (Sandy Plains) outside of questing there? I can't find a way to get there from the village or Moga Woods.

Right now I've primarily been focusing on using the hammer, and have it upgraded to the highest level. As a Monster Hunter newb should I focus on using and upgrading a single weapon or focus on getting them all? So far the hammer has done everything I've needed it to. I'm not sure if each weapon has different strengths/weakness against monsters or its just the attack/defense styles that differ with each.

I think this is the first time that I ever had an inkling an episode could be scripted. That was just too perfect. And now I know what it feels like to be blindsided as I did not see that scenario playing out the way it did in any shape or form - I love it!

The one thing that really gives it away this episode was scripted was Rupert calling everything the way it was. He didn't trust Russell because Russell swore on his kids with some horrible acting, he thought Parvity had a hidden immunity idol because she quit the immunity challenge quickly, and he knew you have to wait until the plantains are ripe before eating! His clarify on this episode almost made up for that ghastly showing the previous episode where he was drooling and slobbering over his mountain man beard trying to prove he was the shit - that image can't be unseen.

Parvity really upped her game in this episode and maybe even topped Russel's big move earlier when he gave the HII to her. If Parvity gets to the finals the non-vindictive hero's (which is probably everyone but Rupert) are going to remember that big move but have no clue about Russell's earlier big move along the same lines. There may be another web site in the future.

It almost feels like a lock now that Parvity/Russell/Danielle will be at the final tribal council.

Other things of note. Boob jobs apparently don't hold up well after hanging on to a 20 foot pole for hours. Amanda is a horrible liar and manipulator "my head hurts!". Colby has checked out again. And here I thought the kimono was a bad choice of fashion.

Surprisingly I thought Tim had one of the best performances of the night. I thought he sounded great and actually performed the song really well. He didn't resort to the creepy stare he normally does.

But yeah Ryan's dancing was a distraction and pretty disrespectful. Even though Tim is joke (except for tonight) that wasn't classy. Ryan seemed to be saying or doing strange crap the entire night.

I didn't care for Shiobans performance either. Even though I really liked her at the start her quirkiness is starting to get a bit old. Similar to how Kelly Pickler's dumb southern blonde act got old. I get the sense she may be in the bottom three this week.

But I'm hoping it will be Andrew and Aaron going home tonight.

I thought for sure Courtney was going and they still managed to switch it up on me.  I'm still a bit confused on how it went down, as I believe the final vote was 4-3, and I'm pretty sure I saw Russell vote for Courtney.  Did Danielle stick with the plan and vote Coach?  What the heck was Russell doing, did he know they would be starting the jury already and this way he could say he never voted for Coach?  Speaking of which, if they started with 12 and jury is beginning, does that mean they are going to do a 3-person finale (9 person jury)?

Yeah, its going to be a 3-person finale. Those suck.

I'm not sure exactly why they split the vote but Russell did vote for Courtney instead of Coach. And if you noticed he also signed his Courtney vote. I hadn't seen him do that before so my thinking is he was sending Coach a message showing he was loyal to him and can say to him if he makes it to the end that he never voted for him.

Danielle voted for Coach.

I'd definitely like some inside info on what went on there with the votes. Russell may have said one thing to the girls and then did another.

Yup, some fine Amanda editing this week. That certainly compensated for Rupert's metamorphosis to an extra from Quest for Fire. Dress him up with a lion skin and club and we got our Captain Caveman live action film.

JT is in such hot water now. He tried to make the best of getting caught with his pants down but there's not much you can do to diffuse that. It was a risk looking for the idol that won't pay off now. But I love that the Hero's tribe has jumped to the conclusion that there's an all girl alliance. Could things work out any better for Russell....unless there is actually one there they haven't shown us. But I don't think there is - it's old school Survivor now and I always recall those falling apart pretty quick with the bickering.

I also love how Sandra exploited Russell's weakness for fear of people gunning for him. Well played. But I think that still worked to Russell's benefit due to this all girls alliance idea. This should solidify in the Hero' mind there is one when they meet next...well until Courtney or Sandra give it away.

But the best part of the episode for me came during the previews for the next episode where they showed all the stupid Survivor moves over the past 19 seasons - then showed a new clip of JT telling the tribe they should give the immunity idol to Russell. Bahahaha! I really hope that happens as I'd love to see their reaction when it bites them.

These last few seasons of Survivor have been so good. Just when you think things couldn't get any better something new happens to top everything before.

I noticed when Tim was asked to stand up for the results there was a lot of high-pitched squealing. I have a feeling the Aaron fan base is starting to go to Tim. I have sinking feeling though that Tim might make it to the final 4.

I'm glad they finally got rid of the save for the season. I didn't think they would use it on Mike as while he's ok he's not great. But I have to say he really seemed to be giving it his all with his performance last night. I think that was the first performance someones done since they implemented the judges save where I actually felt they should use it. But I don't think Big Mike has much of a future. He'll release an album and fade away.

Well the Russell vs Rob thing ended with a bit of a fizzle. I was hoping there would be more of a power play but it didn't seem like Rob put up much of a fight trying to get Coach and Jerri back on his side. But I did love how Coach looked like a sad puppy when Rob denied the "little man" a hug. It almost made up for the showdown fizzle. I can't wait to see what Coach says about that next week.

Colby is back! Yeeaaaaaaaah! He needed to show he was back in a big way, a competitor, a gladiator, a superman and by Jupiter cock he did! I don't know what Jerri was thinking trying to stop James 2.0 from laying up his air balls. Push, splash! Shove, shove, splash! Wiff! Wiff!

He showed he got his mansuit back. Even Candice knew not to try and stay the Beast of Somoa's hand from grabbing and squeezing her ass.

He and Rupert need to go on the WWE as the new Somoan Brothers! Ruperts got part of the look down but they both have the attitude.

I'm guessing there's going to be a merge next week which I'm really looking forward to. Russell needs a new challenge and I think that will present him with one. I'm also guessing the Hero's hidden immunity idol will play a part it in as they didn't show any scenes of them looking for or discovering it.

I also have to give it up to Jerri for realizing her old way of playing Survivor just isn't going to work and that Russell will really be an asset to her. But it sounds like Parvity is looking to start an all girls alliance...or did I hear that wrong? Didn't she mention something like that that right in front of Russell? Russell no like.

My daughter graduated with Siobhan so things around here are so Idol crazy  it is sickening. I have had to watch more of this crap then I ever thought I would. it just amazes me that with all the talent that is out there they still pick mostly crappy people to compete. I just don't get it. And who helps them pick the songs they sing some just monumentally horrible choices.

I'm sure quite a few of the choices are selected as cannon fodder for those initial weeks and so the standouts actually stand out. And there's some good ones they pick that just don't work out for whatever reason. Really the only contestants that matter are the Top 10 for the tour and then the final three.

As far as picking songs its left up to the contestants. Thats why you keep hearing the judges harp on song choices. I know in the past too some contestants have complained they had to switch songs at the last minute due to the show not being able to get the rights for their original song choice. I'm ok with the contestants choosing their own songs because it helps show if they know who they want to be as an artist and they have no one to blame but themselves if their choice is a disaster.

I think it was last season in one of the early rounds one of the girls chose to do "Every Breath You Take" by the Police. This girl was teen pop song material and decided to make the song fit her style. She had this horrible up-beat arrangement and smiled through the entire thing not realizing the song was about a creepy obsessed lover. It was hilariously bad. But half the fun of the show is watching train wrecks like that.

Not a huge fan of the book either. I had someone suggest to me it was a great book but didn't sit down to read it until I heard they were going to make a movie out of it. It wasn't a horrible book. I'd say its good but I can never see myself re-reading it.

The movie was bad but not Wing Commander bad. I at least go through the whole thing.

Here's what Tyson said on why he voted the way he did:

So basically a selfish reason to try and get Russel and Russel's idol in his pocket.

I'm missing James now. The REAL James which finally showed up for this episode to offer some hilarious comments on banana etiquette and flabby guys in a muscle suit. I dunno who this other angry roidrage James was in these first few episodes. That wasn't the James I used to know and enjoyed watching. Too bad he's gone now.

But maybe this means my other favorites will show up instead of these impostors. Like Rupert! You remember him, right? That fun loving pirate! And Amanda! That never give up until the very end hottie - Ok the impostor is still hot! And Super Survivor Challenge Dominator Colby! Maybe they'll make a return - at least in the episode they are voted out.

Oh well.

Tyson is definitely up there with dumbest survivor moves ever. Why turn a win situation in to a potential no win? It wasn't quite as bad as Erik giving his immunity necklace away at tribal and then getting voted right out but its up there. I still don't quite understand how Russell was able to get Tyson to vote that way based on that speech but I guess he's a great judge of character and manipulator - but that's master level manipulation.

I did love the silly speech Russel gave for Coach's benefit about loyalty before giving the immunity idol away. I think that's going to work with getting Coach on his side. I have an odd feeling that Russel is going to turn this whole thing around. If he was able to manipulate Tyson to put it in his head to vote the way he did I have some faith he'll be able to manipulate Coach to be on his side. I'm thinking Jerri would move over with Coach too. It might be as easy as asking them "Do you want to be instrumental in taking out one of the biggest threats in Survivor history?" (which is Russel but they don't know that).

I love this Rob vs Russel showdown and hope Villains win immunity next week so the showdown continues.

I get PC Gamer and GamePro still and they fill my needs - I'm first a PC gamer and a light console gamer.

GamePro gets a lot of flack but I've been with them for about 6 years now. The mag covers both console and PC gaming but leans heavily on console gaming. It's a nice mag for me since I can just quickly flip through it and see what console games might be worth a look.

But they recently redid their magazine. It is now more article focused and less tiny paragraphs surrounded by glitzy screen caps. So I miss the quick read and throw away style. I'm not bought on this new style and since most of the articles are console centric they don't hold a lot of interest to me. But the subscription is dirt cheap so I'll probably keep with it.

It's something to read while on the can.

I think I found it. The cover looks very familiar and I think it did have Howard the Duck in it.
