I tried liking these games (I & II at least) but found them damn difficult. I could only last a few battles before my armies were too beat up to do anything and I couldn't afford new units. HoMM these are not.

That horse looks cool. Do you have to buy it or is it something you can win from one of the holiday quests?
1323  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Arcania: Gothic 4 on: October 18, 2010, 06:46:58 PM
Put a few hours in to this the last couple of days and it pretty much meets what Razgon has said. It's basically Fable lite in the way it plays but is missing a lot of the stuff that made Fable fun. I have yet to hit a single puzzle style quest. Just about all quests are kill/find x number of things. For each quest there's usually a dirt path that leads you right to where you need to go. So its almost funny to see all these dirt paths snaking all over the place. I know if I follow a dirt path I'll usually end up at a quest location.

There's a plot involving a war but I'm not too sure who are the good or bad guys and just how many factions are involved in the war. You get a smattering of talk about the war from talking to NPCs but nothing is clearly laid out so you can say  "Ah ha! He's the guy I need to support!" All I know is my guy wants to kill the King he may or may not be crazy.

The game could have used some extra time to clean up a few technical issues. I've run in to issues where dialogue repeats and character textures do not line up correctly.  For instance I had a conversation with this guy where his teeth kept appearing just below his lip. He had this line of dialogue "... I'm too old for this shit." Then the camera angle changed slightly and he said the same line "... I'm too old for this shit" with his teeth jutting out from under his lip. Another guy I was talking to was wearing a robe that was slightly open near the top so you could see part of his neck line. However his face/neck texture didn't quite fit the robe so there was an alarmingly small gap between part of the robe and the neckline.

However even with the basic quests, not knowing what is going on, and technical issues I still like the game. It's mindless action RPG-lite and I'm digging that at the moment. If it's 15-hours that's about the perfect amount for this.

Yeah looks like the two add-ons are free still but not sure how much longer they will be there as its showing double entries for the add-ons. One for Free and one for points.

You need to go to the Marketplace Add-ons section to see them both. When I went to My Games > Fable II > Downloads it only displayed one of the add-ons for free.

Dang. Missed that dealie.

Is there any way to purchase store items outside of the game or is it just in-game only?
1326  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: LotRO goes Free to PLay on: October 10, 2010, 12:38:45 AM
Just a heads up. The riding skill is 75% off for a "limited time". So it costs 49 points. They're also doubling the bonus points you get on the $50 points purchase (so 6,900 points total) which would net both expansion packs and some other stuff.

Riding skill dealie + other items on sale info:
Points dealie:

The riding skill deal was timely for me. Created two new character classes I wanted to play and used that deal. I did notice that you had to first get the ability to recall home before you could purchase the riding skill for the character.

Not with this film of course.

Returning player with a few questions for a premium account holder:

- Realistically around what level does content start drying up for free account holders? It looks like there are some early level zone packs for purchase. But would I actually be able to get to L40 mainly via quests and without having to grind?

- What, if any, are must have purchases from the store for free account holders?

Its a bit overwhelming since the last time i played this game was like two years ago. I do have the Mines of Moria expansion but not the other Mirkwood one which I understand doesn't come in to play until later. I'm assuming once I hit a certain level content is going to start drying up until I hit the expansion levels.
1329  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Champions Online (Cryptic's new MMO) on: October 06, 2010, 06:06:57 PM
I like that that expansion is offering a new 11-40 play area. Open up a few more areas covering those ranges and a few new starting areas and you got a fair amount of content.

1331  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Netflix Instant Watch recommendation thread on: October 01, 2010, 06:23:16 PM
Oh wow. I remember seeing the trailers for The Fall way back when. Then I just totally forgot about it.

I'll recommend Carriers staring Chris Pine (new Captain Kirk). It takes place a few days after the worlds given up trying to contain a lethal virus. Everyone is on their own or dead. A group of four young people drive cross country to try and make it to the shore of a remote area they plan to live. To keep from being infected they've set up rules to adhere to. But those rules are challenged almost from the get go.

For an end of the world movie this one has slower pacing but it kept me interested throughout. Like Monsters this is just a small slice of a larger story. I do have to say the ending sucked but that was 60 seconds from the entire movie and didn't really ruin it - just was disappointing.
1332  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Survivor. Where's the thread? Oh, here it is. on: September 30, 2010, 07:46:57 PM
Woo...Famke Janssen is a hawt insane cradle robber. I'm expecting some Fatal Attraction scenes from her in the near future. It'll be interesting if Julia and Matt let Sean in on their secret. I imagine its gotta come out sooner or later. Can't wait. And what's Christian gonna....oh wait. That's right this is the Survivor thread. Here I wanted to recap my thoughts on some exciting television watching but oh well.

I get the sense this season is going to be one of the more boring ones. Beyond Fabio I can't think of anyone on either tribe I want to back. There's only one guy on the old tribe that seems to be playing the game (Dan?) but he's not likable and he's thinking way too far ahead. He's certainly no Russel Hanz. Beyond him no one else on that tribe seems to realize this is a game. The red headed doctor who is obviously intelligent pissed me off when she told the guy (Dan? again) she'd vote for whomever he chooses.  How lame.

Then everyone on the young tribe is either too cutthroat, have no personality, or is just plain mean (Naonka). So there is no one to back. Just Fabio. What they need to do is fly Shambo out for this season. I never really liked her as she was so dopey but I could back her this season. Heck the possibility of an alliance between Fabio and Shambo is just too good not to think of. Throw in a challenge those two are tied together and need to navigate an obstacle course and you got prime television entertainment. Wishful thinking.

In the short term the only thing I think I can look forward to is Naonka getting the beat down by Kelly with her artificial leg.

I haven't given up yet but this season has been disappointing.

$10 for a time-limited download rental?  Good lord: for that price, the director should phone you up after the movie for a personalized Q&A.

-Autistic Angel

That's the general price (on Xbox Live or Comcast OnDemand or whatever) for renting a movie on the same day that it hits theaters.  Sometimes they're only about $7 if it is a smaller indie movie, but either way you're basically paying about the same as you would for a single theater ticket.

Yeah I didn't think it was a bad deal. $10 for two of us plus didn't have to pay for popcorn and drinks.
1334  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Legend of the Seeker, Season 2 on: September 27, 2010, 07:32:08 PM
Still available on Netflix for steaming. The Season 2 conclusion left things open and was a crummy episode to boot.

However its still worth watching. I didn't like the series initially as it felt like Star Wars in a fantasy universe. But then it turned a corner after a few episodes and I was looking forward to see more. There's great chemistry between the three main actors (and the sexual tension between two of them keeps things fun) plus the stories were decent to boot. The second season adds Cara to the main character trio and she quickly became my favorite of the bunch so I was kinda sad Season 3 didn't happen just for her alone.

But you got 44 episodes of shows here and while the second season started to wane near the end that's still quite a bit of entertainment - and some almost T&A just about every episode. smile
1335  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [TTH] Whatever Happened to.... on: September 27, 2010, 07:06:04 PM
I played the Myst Uru game on Gametap and while that game looked great I didn't understand what the hell I was doing (first Myst game). I didn't quite get why it was an MMO. Players appeared in hub areas but it was never clear to me if you could solve puzzles together. Hell it was unclear what the puzzles were. I would find areas where I could manipulate objects but never understand their purpose. Or just blindly solve something without seeing a result. I recall there were technical issues too such as lag and player warping - which was comical. And I seem to recall the chat interface was archaic enough to come from the original Everquest.

I recall the most fun I had there was arriving at one of the hubs where people were "jumping" from the top of a temple down to the bottom. As you walked up the steep temple steps you would see a continue flow of people falling down from the top of the temple. But it was so silly because the fall animation was a stiff pose with your arms up in the are and because of the lag you would basically see these human forms sliding around or phasing in and out as they fell down. It was fun for all of 10 minutes and the best time I had in the game.

Games I would be curious to hear the history on would be Asheron's Call 2, Horizons, and Earth and Beyond.
1336  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Arcania: Gothic 4 - Demo released! on: September 27, 2010, 06:44:03 PM
I was pretty positive over the demo as I was expecting far worse. I actually liked the starting area was pretty confined and you were routed to where you needed to go to ease you in to it. Combat was easier to pull off than any previous Gothic game although possibly too easy. I found I could use the Bow/Arrow and just back up while firing and the monsters wouldn't reach me.

I figure this will be a fun lite action-RPG to play through. Since there's Risen I don't mind so much the original series trying something a little less hard core.

And the voice acting was horrible for that witch who I guess was Canadian.
1337  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Delve Deeper on: September 27, 2010, 06:11:26 PM
I played it for a few hours and its pretty good for that price. Definitely got my moneys worth.

This could be a board game. You basically have multiple teams of dwarf's competing to get as much money out of the mine for their king as possible. The team that gets the most money by the end of the set # of turns wins. Each team has 5 dwarfs on them and there are different classes of dwarf each with their strengths and weakness (e.g. one can carry more loot, one can fight better, one can move further).

Each team has a turn where you do 3 things during the turn:

- Lay down a new mine tile that opens up and/or connects mine passages
- Move your dwarfs
- Mine/Unload Spoils/Combat

The further you dig down in to the mine (lay down mine titles) the better riches there are. But there are also monsters down there that will wander around and attack any dwarfs. So its sometimes important to stack up your dwarfs so they have a better chance at defeating the monsters. But you won't always have to worry about that especially if you have a fighter dwarf which can take and deal some significant damage but can't carry much loot.  You can be a bit nasty with the monsters and use your tile piece to link one of your opponents mines to where a bunch of monsters are. I've only done this once and while useful I felt I wasted the opportunity to open up the mine in the section I was working in.

The other teams are AI controlled. I didn't really feel challenged by them. I won the first two games I played. There may be a difficulty setting I haven't seen yet (I hope there is). The main problem with the game is there is no save option and my first game took over an hour to finish and the second one close to that. To make things worse you have to sit and watch each of your opponents turns when they move each individual dwarf on their team. So if you have 3 other teams you have to sit there and watch 15 individual moves. Then when thats done the monsters move and you have to watch them go at it. Then if there is combat you have to watch that - actually that you need to see and if it was just that it would be ok but its a lot of waiting till you get your next turn.

So for less than the $5 this is a fine game. I do hope they add some type of save feature and there's a level selector for more challenging opponents.

1338  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Monsters on: September 25, 2010, 04:40:22 PM
I ended up liking it too. It's a slower paced film focusing on the two main characters as they make their way back to the US through the infected zone. There's an sense of unease and dread as they do so and there's more focus on that than any real scares.

So an action film this is not. Neither of the main characters encounter or work with the major players trying to deal with the monsters as would be the typical hollywood take on this setup. The thing is the setting for this world is so well realized I would love a more action oriented franchise or book series in this universe. This is a small story in a larger one that's going on so left me wanting to know more.

This was the first On Demand film I bothered to purchase and I have to say I was pretty impressed with the quality. Usually the free On Demand movies/TV stuff I'll watch I'll see macroblocking or the sound will just be stereo. The picture quality for the film was crisp all the way through and the sound quality was also very good (not great). So it exceeded my expectations on what I was expecting. But in the end I think the better all-around experience would have come from the theater.

1342  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Digital Sales Beat Retail Sales on: September 21, 2010, 06:35:06 PM
Another + for BigFish. My wife buys a ton of these games where you try and find specific items in an image. I don't quite get the lure of those but she loves them. Big Fish seems to get several new games daily which she'll gobble up.

For me I've basically moved away from purchasing physical copies of games. Digital copies tend to run cheaper, are more convenient and save space. Given that most physical copies of games come with a mediocre manual or just a slip of paper it seems almost pointless to purchase them.

The only physical copy games I can see myself purchasing in the future are ones that are not on Steam and MMOs as the installs for those tend to be huge.

Jeff Probst has said this seasons challenges will be less physical and more puzzle oriented due to the tribes age differences. So I image there will be quite a few puzzle pieces to come. As long as the challenges are creative I don't mind them. And I dig Jeff Probst saying "puzzle pieces".

1345  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Survivor. Where's the thread? Oh, here it is. on: September 17, 2010, 06:59:20 PM
A pretty boring start to the series overall. The Talisman of Power thing is a dumb and probably ruin the challenges when used. I'm also not sure about the whole reveal for the hidden immunity idol. Are the clues just going to show up at each treemail? That'll stink. But I do like the fact it was unexpected and now two people who probably didn't want to work together have to. And why didn't the old team get a hidden immunity idol clue?

You can already tell the old people's tribe is in trouble. Too many old bittys and grumpy old men. I don't get the sense they'll be able to get any unified orginization together to win the challenges. However I do like the fact that Machete is on the tribe so there's that going for them.

I'm also thankful the young tribe has their own celebrity lookalike in Fabio. They need some comedic personality to even out their cutthroat attitude.

So not off to a good start but maybe its working towards a slow foot blistering boil.

1348  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Comcast On Demand rentals 5.1? on: September 15, 2010, 01:00:37 AM
So I basically never use Comcast OnDemand to rent any pay movies although I've used the free On Demand content. Are all the purchasable OnDemand movies Dolby Digital for 5.1 sound? It looks like most of the free On Demand movies are.

Basically the film Monsters is due out On Demand on 9/24 and I figured I'd save the trip to the theater and some $$ to watch it next month at home. Of course I want a good experience (HD/5.1 sound) but its unclear if all those movies are in 5.1. It's not DTS but I can live with Dolby Digital if its that.

I also looked at PS3 and 360 which I think are also supposed to get it. From what I can tell the PS3 is stereo (PLII) and the 360 trailers via component cables was coming up PCM PLII.

So any experience? Or other caveats that would have me rethinking this idea and just waiting till October to see it in theaters?
1349  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Amnesia: the Dark Descent on: September 14, 2010, 05:53:42 PM
I ended the game with close to 40 tinderboxes and maybe 4 or 5 oil flasks. I was very selective on using the tinderboxes until I hit around 30 and then I figured I might as well use them more. I typically just used them in areas I figured I'd need to solve a puzzle. Or if there were hallways I would light a torch on or near a corner.

I mainly utilized the lantern so there were times where I was down to 1 oil flask but never out.
1350  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Amnesia: the Dark Descent on: September 12, 2010, 12:31:16 AM
Finished the game today. Steam says I played 7hrs total which is probably about right. Enjoyed the game throughout for the overall experience. Had a single puzzle I couldn't figure out that I had to look online to find the solution. There's 3 different endings to the game and after finishing one you can do the other two.

There's a code you get after the credits. The three codes can be used to unzip a "" file thats in the games directory. It has a bunch of concept art and early video demos of the level editor and game. There is also a really neat document in there that the developers used to pitch their idea for the game. The storyline of the game they pitched is very different than the one they ended up with. There were also some mechanics from the original concept game they didn't use (such as money). Worth a read through if you enjoyed the game.

1355  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Amnesia: the Dark Descent on: September 09, 2010, 06:41:45 PM
I put a few hours in to this the other day and am loving it. The little tips from the developer at the beginning of the game explaining how the game is better played as an experience driven game than just getting through as quickly as possible really set the right tone for creating an immersive experience.

I never did care for Penumbra as I quickly became bored by it and just stopped playing. Having the right expectation of how to play these games should help. I'll have to go back and try those games again with this mindset.

In any case if you played the demo it isn't too long before the game will veer away from where the demo takes you. It was nice to see how quickly new material is presented. Later you'll visit another one of the demo areas and then a bit later still the last part with the water - which goes on a bit longer than what was in the demo.

My favorite moment so far was when I was looking around a room with a closet and I heard the door in the adjacent room bust open. Some text popped up warning me I should hide as I can't fight whatever it is. So I jump in the only hiding spot, the closet, and close the doors and wait. And wait.

I don't hear anything but at this point in the game I was playing so long that i was fully immersed the game. I was actually afraid to open the closet doors to find something lurking in the room. Great stuff.

All puzzles I've run across have been logical or just something I missed.

The story you uncover as you piece together your history and the current state of things has me interested and I can't wait to see how it all turns out.

So far the game is a winner.

Finished off the first season of Nip/Tuck. Awesome show. I can't stand watching the surgeries but love the characters and the writing. I found the show pretty dark overall but there is some really nice wit on display too. The stories typically do not go where you think they are going to go. I loved being continually surprised and often stunned when the show went from the unexpected to over the top.

Highly recommend the show if you haven't seen it. If the surgeries bother you they become less prominent a few episodes in where they are reduced to a 30 second music montage.

I read the show starts losing steam during Season 4 and then after that it gets worse. But hell if there are 4 seasons around the quality of S1 I'll be happy.

Mass Effect.

I loved the sequel and it would have been nice to go into it with a carry over character and my own backstory.

I stopped playing because I wasn't having fun. And playing games is a hobby, not a job.

I've tried multiple times. Just can't get into it. The combat system is super awkward.

Same for me, though it wasn't exactly the combat.  It's just "something" that has never clicked.  I'm actually still trying to get through it, hopefully before the GotY edition of the second one comes out (or whatever they'll call the one that has all the DLC).

Same issue with the original Mass Effect. Stopped playing it after awhile and didn't touched it until Mass Effect 2 was sitting there in the shrink wrap. Instead of popping in ME2 I willed myself to put the original back in and complete it knowing if I didn't do it then I likely wouldn't later. With setting the goal of focusing just the main mission and not getting caught up in side-quests or crew relations I was able to finish the game in two or three days of playing. But I almost stopped right from the get go as my last save started at a driving mission. Ugh.

I'm glad I went through the process of finishing the first game. There were quite a few good moments in there and by the end I was pumped to play the sequel to see how the decisions I made played out.

I think I can say it would be difficult to go back and play the original after the sequel. The interface and gameplay is clunky and slower paced which would be an adjustment.
