Wasn't the previous Lifetime subscription $199? I have one and can't recall exactly what I paid but I think I would balk at $299.

Yeah my digital DLs exclusively come from Steam. I found pretty quickly it would get hard to keep track of which service I downloaded what game from. Even if a game I want has a good sale on another service I won't get it unless I can transfer it over to Steam.

I don't even care that all my eggs are in one basket. The egg prices are low and its convenient.

A couple good deals today only:

50% off both expansion packs:
1,111 points for $11.11:

The Moria expansion comes with the two new classes Warden/Runekeeper. I do have to say I'm having a hell of lot of fun playing the Runekeeper. Its like the best of both worlds (damage/healing) rolled in to one. Haven't even touched the Moria content yet.

I agree That the guts thing was new and created some of the most tense moments I have ever experienced in a television, once i stopped laughing at sausage links hanging around their necks smile

I dunno. That seemed familar to me. Either something I read or had seen in another zombie movie where that was tried. The blending in thing certainly has been done going way back to Invasion of the Body Snatchers. But for whatever reason it didn't seem a new concept to me. I'm probably just geeking out on zombie lore knowledge.

As for the moral dilemma that would have probably worked better if the guy wasn't such a threat. He was ready to fight and potentionally kill others. If he was released that likely would have happened again so why let them go? If the person was someone who was weak, confused and in need of assistance it would have been more impactful. I think they missed the mark on it.
1287  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Walking Dead stroll onto AMC on: November 09, 2010, 12:56:24 AM
Didn't care so much for the second episode. I like that it veered from the comics but the episode wasn't compelling at all. Pretty much standard zombie stuff. It seemed like they were trying to shoot for some ethical dilemma with the van realization at the end "oh shit what did we do?" but the person central to that dilemma was so despicable who cares? The gore scene was over the top silliness and to me it came across as the television network trying to boast what they could get away with in showing gross out moments.

Damn reading all that back I sound jaded...but I guess I am as I've read/watched/played so many zombie things I'm just looking for something more clever and new. I'm sticking around for the show but I really hope they don't lose focus on what they set up and turn it in to another low budget zombie flick.

I do have to say I loved the final scene.

It was still up last night but dunno about today. If the Halloween event message appears on the login screen then it may still be up.

Just an FYI on the Haunted House after the initial timed quest you get in there you have to exit the haunted house to pick up all the other quests (can only do 1 quest at a time). The first time in there I was running all over the place looking for the other quests not realizing I had to turn in the one I was doing to get the others.
1290  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Recommend a spooky, maybe "doom like" FPS? on: November 02, 2010, 06:44:26 PM
Amnesia at the top of the list (not a shooter). L4D2 for sure. Bioshock. Prey. Doom 3 which felt like a haunted house to me and I enjoyed that but many did not. Minecraft if you're willing to be a bit creative (not a shooter). Dead Space for a 3rd person shooter. Resident Evil 4 has a few scares. Call of Cthulhu was a bit scary for the first few hours but then got crummy so only get on the cheap.

Not sure how System Shock 2 holds up in the scares department. I played it a few years ago again and it was more for nostalgic interests. Undying doesn't hold up in the scares department and was a bit of a let down when I played it again a few months ago. I had very font memories of that game. Fear 2 I didn't find scary at all and was a bit boring to boot.

This turned out a lot better than I thought. I've read the first three "books" in the series and overall thought the books were just ok. So the series was a nice improvement adding some new scenes and situations. Hopefully they can keep it up.

The last 5 minutes or so were when it took a dive for me. It basically turned in to the a-typical zombie horror flick with the moaning and the chomping on guts and what not. Wish they had done something unexpected or new there rather than same old same old. Then to follow that up with an odd music montage kinda turned me off.

But up until that point I was really enjoying what was there.

If you purchase Mines of Moria it comes with the 2 extra character slots and the two new classes with the L50 zones. But its a bit pricey in the online store (2500 points) if you don't have any characters close to 50. Maybe some Black Friday and X-mas deals in the near future.

Haven't finished it yet but its a lot better than I thought it would be. I never watched Big Brother and not at all familiar with the UK personalies but that hasn't effected me from enjoy it. Whew. Safe. Nothing on there I want or already have.

Good deal on Metro 2033 and totally worth it at that price. Neat story and fantastic atmosphere. Check out the demo if you are unsure about the game.

It seems generally recommended to play the game in easy mode as the other levels make it too difficult. I went with that recommendation and I think that was the correct choice. Its a story driven game and focuses more on that than the FPS combat. So on easy I didn't feel I needed to worry about conserving ammo which just made for a better overall experience.
1299  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Champions Online (Cryptic's new MMO) on: October 27, 2010, 06:03:05 PM
As a lifer what they offer is fine. Was hoping they would offer monthly points on top of it but oh well not a huge deal. I'm playing it irregularly - mainly jumping on when new content is added. I still see myself selling the lifetime account in the future and I imagine the move to F2P has upped the value so I'm good with that.
1300  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Arcania: Gothic 4 on: October 27, 2010, 04:00:19 AM
Ok. So while everyone else is playing the shit this week (Rock Band 3/Fable 3/Force Unleashed 2/etc) I've been finishing up this game. I figured I was probably getting close to finishing the game at about 13 hours in but I was waaaay wrong. It took me 23hrs of play time to finish the game. Holy cow it went on far longer than it should have.

The game plays like Diablo II-lite. Then after about 15 hours they throw away and semblance of an RPG and your quests narrow down to basically a single quest line.

I did like some things about the game. The game looks wonderful. There are certainly some impressive visuals to it and probably the best looking game since Just Case 2. It's also mindless fun. Once you get some decent armor and weapons you become death and destruction. You can pretty easily take down anything thrown at you and  it's just fun to mow down enemies so easily.

I even grew to like some of the minor bugs in the game. All trees in the game sway like there are hurricane force winds blowing - except you never hear any wind. Once you get to the swamplands this phenomenon is hillarious with all the deep rooted trees jiggigling and swaying. I also grew to love the dialogue bugs. The voice actor for the main NPC was likely recorded seperately from all other NPCs. Any time a strange name is said the NPC voice actors will say it one way and the main character will say it another.

NPC: "Can you bring these seeds to Jabbo?"
Main: "Who is this Jaybo?"
NPC: "Jabbo lives in a hut down a ways on the left"
Main: "Fine. I will bring these to Jaybo"

It's almost as if the main character is trying to be a pisser on purpose. Unintentional but funny.

There's a lot wrong with the game and I wouldn't reccomend spending $50 on it. If you liked Gothic this is nothing like it. Best to think of it as a new game. I would reccomend it once it gets down in the $20 or lower area. I put 23 hours in to it and while it wasn't the best gaming experience I've had it wasn't awful either.

1302  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Arcania: Gothic 4 on: October 22, 2010, 12:41:20 AM

I think I died exactly once to monsters in the full game so far and that was due to lazyness of just going in and swinging away (I'm more of a caster). Battles are simple affairs especially if you use a combination of ice (slow) and melee. It'll also work fine if you just use arrows while back up but that takes longer.

I'm enjoying the game for what it is but it's definetly a C grade action RPG. I'm about 13 hours in now and getting close to having my fill of the game but think I'm close to the end now which is just fine. I've got the Baldur's Gate Trilogy mod ready for playing after I wash my hands of this one.

1305  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Arcania: Gothic 4 on: October 18, 2010, 06:46:58 PM
Put a few hours in to this the last couple of days and it pretty much meets what Razgon has said. It's basically Fable lite in the way it plays but is missing a lot of the stuff that made Fable fun. I have yet to hit a single puzzle style quest. Just about all quests are kill/find x number of things. For each quest there's usually a dirt path that leads you right to where you need to go. So its almost funny to see all these dirt paths snaking all over the place. I know if I follow a dirt path I'll usually end up at a quest location.

There's a plot involving a war but I'm not too sure who are the good or bad guys and just how many factions are involved in the war. You get a smattering of talk about the war from talking to NPCs but nothing is clearly laid out so you can say  "Ah ha! He's the guy I need to support!" All I know is my guy wants to kill the King he may or may not be crazy.

The game could have used some extra time to clean up a few technical issues. I've run in to issues where dialogue repeats and character textures do not line up correctly.  For instance I had a conversation with this guy where his teeth kept appearing just below his lip. He had this line of dialogue "... I'm too old for this shit." Then the camera angle changed slightly and he said the same line "... I'm too old for this shit" with his teeth jutting out from under his lip. Another guy I was talking to was wearing a robe that was slightly open near the top so you could see part of his neck line. However his face/neck texture didn't quite fit the robe so there was an alarmingly small gap between part of the robe and the neckline.

However even with the basic quests, not knowing what is going on, and technical issues I still like the game. It's mindless action RPG-lite and I'm digging that at the moment. If it's 15-hours that's about the perfect amount for this.

Just a heads up. The riding skill is 75% off for a "limited time". So it costs 49 points. They're also doubling the bonus points you get on the $50 points purchase (so 6,900 points total) which would net both expansion packs and some other stuff.

Riding skill dealie + other items on sale info:
Points dealie:

The riding skill deal was timely for me. Created two new character classes I wanted to play and used that deal. I did notice that you had to first get the ability to recall home before you could purchase the riding skill for the character.

Returning player with a few questions for a premium account holder:

- Realistically around what level does content start drying up for free account holders? It looks like there are some early level zone packs for purchase. But would I actually be able to get to L40 mainly via quests and without having to grind?

- What, if any, are must have purchases from the store for free account holders?

Its a bit overwhelming since the last time i played this game was like two years ago. I do have the Mines of Moria expansion but not the other Mirkwood one which I understand doesn't come in to play until later. I'm assuming once I hit a certain level content is going to start drying up until I hit the expansion levels.

Oh wow. I remember seeing the trailers for The Fall way back when. Then I just totally forgot about it.

I'll recommend Carriers staring Chris Pine (new Captain Kirk). It takes place a few days after the worlds given up trying to contain a lethal virus. Everyone is on their own or dead. A group of four young people drive cross country to try and make it to the shore of a remote area they plan to live. To keep from being infected they've set up rules to adhere to. But those rules are challenged almost from the get go.

For an end of the world movie this one has slower pacing but it kept me interested throughout. Like Monsters this is just a small slice of a larger story. I do have to say the ending sucked but that was 60 seconds from the entire movie and didn't really ruin it - just was disappointing.
1314  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Survivor. Where's the thread? Oh, here it is. on: September 30, 2010, 07:46:57 PM
Woo...Famke Janssen is a hawt insane cradle robber. I'm expecting some Fatal Attraction scenes from her in the near future. It'll be interesting if Julia and Matt let Sean in on their secret. I imagine its gotta come out sooner or later. Can't wait. And what's Christian gonna....oh wait. That's right this is the Survivor thread. Here I wanted to recap my thoughts on some exciting television watching but oh well.

I get the sense this season is going to be one of the more boring ones. Beyond Fabio I can't think of anyone on either tribe I want to back. There's only one guy on the old tribe that seems to be playing the game (Dan?) but he's not likable and he's thinking way too far ahead. He's certainly no Russel Hanz. Beyond him no one else on that tribe seems to realize this is a game. The red headed doctor who is obviously intelligent pissed me off when she told the guy (Dan? again) she'd vote for whomever he chooses.  How lame.

Then everyone on the young tribe is either too cutthroat, have no personality, or is just plain mean (Naonka). So there is no one to back. Just Fabio. What they need to do is fly Shambo out for this season. I never really liked her as she was so dopey but I could back her this season. Heck the possibility of an alliance between Fabio and Shambo is just too good not to think of. Throw in a challenge those two are tied together and need to navigate an obstacle course and you got prime television entertainment. Wishful thinking.

In the short term the only thing I think I can look forward to is Naonka getting the beat down by Kelly with her artificial leg.

I haven't given up yet but this season has been disappointing.

-Autistic Angel

That's the general price (on Xbox Live or Comcast OnDemand or whatever) for renting a movie on the same day that it hits theaters.  Sometimes they're only about $7 if it is a smaller indie movie, but either way you're basically paying about the same as you would for a single theater ticket.

1316  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Legend of the Seeker, Season 2 on: September 27, 2010, 07:32:08 PM
Still available on Netflix for steaming. The Season 2 conclusion left things open and was a crummy episode to boot.

However its still worth watching. I didn't like the series initially as it felt like Star Wars in a fantasy universe. But then it turned a corner after a few episodes and I was looking forward to see more. There's great chemistry between the three main actors (and the sexual tension between two of them keeps things fun) plus the stories were decent to boot. The second season adds Cara to the main character trio and she quickly became my favorite of the bunch so I was kinda sad Season 3 didn't happen just for her alone.

But you got 44 episodes of shows here and while the second season started to wane near the end that's still quite a bit of entertainment - and some almost T&A just about every episode. smile
1317  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [TTH] Whatever Happened to.... on: September 27, 2010, 07:06:04 PM
I played the Myst Uru game on Gametap and while that game looked great I didn't understand what the hell I was doing (first Myst game). I didn't quite get why it was an MMO. Players appeared in hub areas but it was never clear to me if you could solve puzzles together. Hell it was unclear what the puzzles were. I would find areas where I could manipulate objects but never understand their purpose. Or just blindly solve something without seeing a result. I recall there were technical issues too such as lag and player warping - which was comical. And I seem to recall the chat interface was archaic enough to come from the original Everquest.

I recall the most fun I had there was arriving at one of the hubs where people were "jumping" from the top of a temple down to the bottom. As you walked up the steep temple steps you would see a continue flow of people falling down from the top of the temple. But it was so silly because the fall animation was a stiff pose with your arms up in the are and because of the lag you would basically see these human forms sliding around or phasing in and out as they fell down. It was fun for all of 10 minutes and the best time I had in the game.

Games I would be curious to hear the history on would be Asheron's Call 2, Horizons, and Earth and Beyond.
1318  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Arcania: Gothic 4 - Demo released! on: September 27, 2010, 06:44:03 PM
I was pretty positive over the demo as I was expecting far worse. I actually liked the starting area was pretty confined and you were routed to where you needed to go to ease you in to it. Combat was easier to pull off than any previous Gothic game although possibly too easy. I found I could use the Bow/Arrow and just back up while firing and the monsters wouldn't reach me.

I figure this will be a fun lite action-RPG to play through. Since there's Risen I don't mind so much the original series trying something a little less hard core.

And the voice acting was horrible for that witch who I guess was Canadian.
1319  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Delve Deeper on: September 27, 2010, 06:11:26 PM
I played it for a few hours and its pretty good for that price. Definitely got my moneys worth.

This could be a board game. You basically have multiple teams of dwarf's competing to get as much money out of the mine for their king as possible. The team that gets the most money by the end of the set # of turns wins. Each team has 5 dwarfs on them and there are different classes of dwarf each with their strengths and weakness (e.g. one can carry more loot, one can fight better, one can move further).

Each team has a turn where you do 3 things during the turn:

- Lay down a new mine tile that opens up and/or connects mine passages
- Move your dwarfs
- Mine/Unload Spoils/Combat

The further you dig down in to the mine (lay down mine titles) the better riches there are. But there are also monsters down there that will wander around and attack any dwarfs. So its sometimes important to stack up your dwarfs so they have a better chance at defeating the monsters. But you won't always have to worry about that especially if you have a fighter dwarf which can take and deal some significant damage but can't carry much loot.  You can be a bit nasty with the monsters and use your tile piece to link one of your opponents mines to where a bunch of monsters are. I've only done this once and while useful I felt I wasted the opportunity to open up the mine in the section I was working in.

The other teams are AI controlled. I didn't really feel challenged by them. I won the first two games I played. There may be a difficulty setting I haven't seen yet (I hope there is). The main problem with the game is there is no save option and my first game took over an hour to finish and the second one close to that. To make things worse you have to sit and watch each of your opponents turns when they move each individual dwarf on their team. So if you have 3 other teams you have to sit there and watch 15 individual moves. Then when thats done the monsters move and you have to watch them go at it. Then if there is combat you have to watch that - actually that you need to see and if it was just that it would be ok but its a lot of waiting till you get your next turn.

So for less than the $5 this is a fine game. I do hope they add some type of save feature and there's a level selector for more challenging opponents.

1320  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Monsters on: September 25, 2010, 04:40:22 PM
I ended up liking it too. It's a slower paced film focusing on the two main characters as they make their way back to the US through the infected zone. There's an sense of unease and dread as they do so and there's more focus on that than any real scares.

So an action film this is not. Neither of the main characters encounter or work with the major players trying to deal with the monsters as would be the typical hollywood take on this setup. The thing is the setting for this world is so well realized I would love a more action oriented franchise or book series in this universe. This is a small story in a larger one that's going on so left me wanting to know more.

This was the first On Demand film I bothered to purchase and I have to say I was pretty impressed with the quality. Usually the free On Demand movies/TV stuff I'll watch I'll see macroblocking or the sound will just be stereo. The picture quality for the film was crisp all the way through and the sound quality was also very good (not great). So it exceeded my expectations on what I was expecting. But in the end I think the better all-around experience would have come from the theater.
