1202  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Netflix Instant Watch recommendation thread on: January 09, 2011, 05:21:45 AM
Saw another good recently added movie by the title of "Exam". Takes place in the future where 8 job applicants are placed in a room together. The room has 8 desks with 8 pencils. There is a guard in the room. Their instructor gives them a set of rules to follow. If they don't follow the rules they are disqualified. There is a single question they must answer. He starts a timer. 80 minutes are on the clock counting down. He leaves the room but the gaurd remains.

The applicants must figure out how to answer the question with the rules they've been told. It's an interesting process and I didn't feel cheated at all by what developed through the course of the movie. It's not perfect and I wish it went another direction towards the end but it was entertaining. If you liked movies like Cube you'll probably enjoy this one.

I also noticed that some movies were now offering different audio options for streaming (on the PS3 at least). I was hoping for choices between the subtitled/dub audio tracks but it looks like it may just be a choice between stereo and 5.1 tracks right now. It's a start.

1203  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Amnesia: the Dark Descent on: January 08, 2011, 03:52:09 AM
It does not. But the game doesn't start exactly where the demo does and the sections from the demo are spread out throughout the game. So there will be moments of retreading what was in the demo but its not that big of a deal. There will be new stuff before/after those sections.

It looks like the game is a puzzle platform style game from those pictures. Not what I was expecting if that's the actual gameplay from it. Less interested if so.

Video games: either Superman or Raiders of the Lost Ark for 2600

Neither game had much in the way of hints telling you what you need to do next. I know for Raiders I had to wait until Video Games Magazine had a few tips on it for advancing in the game. Recall one of the hardest parts was an area near the start where Indy falls down from the top of the screen and needs to maneuver to a hidden "cave opening" that's right below a branch. The "completion" screen had Indy standing on these titles with the Ark overhead. I remember my sister and I looking at each other at the moment we saw that and saying "what does it mean?" I still don't know.

Computer games: Ultima 2 for Apple //e

Had just gotten an Apple // and had Ultima 3 but was struggling through it when I got Ultima 2 for X-mas. I played it non-stop until I finished it. Loved that game. I did finally finish Ultima 3 - once those helpful Quest For Clues books came out.

Has anyone else had trouble with their account getting hacked into?

I found out a few days ago someone hacked my account and started using a Cataclysm trial for my account on Christmas. I hadn't used the account in about 7 months. Thankfully I caught it early and nothing was deleted. The person just leveled my character 10 levels. I changed the password then had Blizzard lock the account. I plan on going back to WoW once I get tired of LOTRO and will go through the process of re-activating it after being locked (think you have to send them some infomation).

No one had access to my account so its a bit of a mystery on how it got hacked. Dunno if I'm going to bother with the authenticator - shouldn't really have to it resort to that.

1211  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Ubisoft modified AC2's DRM? on: December 30, 2010, 07:04:41 PM
To answer the original question there is an option to save locally. I'm glad you started the thread as I had forgotten about that when I heard it mentioned awhile back. I bought the game during the Steam sale and had been playing it regularly so certainly want to save locally. It took me a bit to find where to change that setting. You would think it would be in the game options or on the silly Ubisoft UPLAY service but its not. When you launch the game there's a login window (to Ubisoft) and on that window is a small star type icon. If you click on that it prompts you asking if you wish to save locally.

If there was another location to change this where its more clearly laid out I didn't see it.

In the few days I played before turning this option on I did not have any issues with losing progress or getting disconnected from the game.

1215  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: LotRO goes Free to PLay on: December 23, 2010, 07:45:24 PM
LOTRO has started this daily lottory thing that's turned out to be pretty good. I've already won it several times on various characters. Lottories happen hourly and are easy to join.

Just go to and login. Then click on "more widgets" and select Lottory. You can then go in to the widget and see all the lottories. Just have to click on which characters you want to join the lottories and you're in. Check back in an hour to see if you won and also join others. Prizes range from various items, mounts, silver and what not.

Also today Virtue/Class/Race are 20% off today if you were holding off on spending any points unlocking them.

Finally they brought back the double-points package bonuses which are pretty good deals. Especially if you are F2P as any purchase of points will upgrade your account to Premium (1 additonal character slot and 5gp gold cap).
1216  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: LotRO goes Free to PLay on: December 22, 2010, 04:00:58 AM
The traits really arre not going to factor in to much of anything at that level. At L40 we still only have 2 virtue/race trait slots open and its barely effected us. We did open up the class ones which had some significant bonuses. You can earn points (5/10/15/20) for completing deeds in areas and there are plenty of deeds to complete in the free to play areas. So with a little work you don't have to pay anything to open up new slots.

I fired up Strangers Wrath and played through the tutorial.  Water textures look screwed up, and there is no resolution options other than full screen (stretchy) or windowed (looks better), but it seems to be running OK so far.

You can modify the config file to put in the resolution you want:

The textures still look pretty horrible in spots and gameplay is not smooth at all. Hopefully they can fix Stranger's and Munch's to a playable state. Really want to play Munch since I missed that one.
1218  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Survivor. Where's the thread? Oh, here it is. on: December 20, 2010, 08:25:08 PM
Yup, that was a entertaining last episode. I'd say the last two episodes were the best from the season and the right person won. I forgot which contestant said Fabio had shown the most growth but he certainly grew during this last episode. I loved seeing Fabio get some smarts and made Sash look like an ass and didn't make Chase or Holly look too good either. He played that perfectly with everything he said and did. Plus the group voted out the right person, Holly, who would have had a good chance at winning.

I was wrong about how the final tribal would play out. I figured Chase would basically give it away but he actually fought. I don't think he sold himself on some of the things he said although Alina seemed to buy in to it with the whole man/boy thing - which I don't think she fully understands. I also figured there would just be a bunch of comments made by the jury but they actually asked questions. Useless Kelly even asked a useless question - didn't Sash basically just answer Kelly's question a few seconds before she asked it? I also liked how Chase, Sash and Fabio were jumping in on each others comments - which allowed Chase to burn Fabio on reminding everyone how clueless he was after the votes were in. If there are any takeaways from this season it would be for the final contestants to continue fighting even if it isn't their "turn".

But other than that this whole season was horrible. Probably one of, if not, the worst. In fact it's got me so upset I've started investing in this new venture capital that is global and has an eco-friendly atmosphere and is looking to OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT! Wha? Quick Wendy pass the bong back to Fabio. Jeff's about to ask how your husband correctly told you that you would be voted off first. Strange. I heard words coming from your mouth but they didn't make a whole lot of sense. In any case I know if you continue to wear that cowboy outfit with the oversized hat and tassels there will be no fluffing in your future.

So is this next Survivor with redemption island going to be another All-Star style game? There were quite a few former contestants in the audience. And they played up the Cerie vs Rupert thing. It seems too soon but the prospect of seeing Russel vs Rob is titillating. The All-Star crew would be the best ones to sell this "twist" if its going to be included going forward.

But the best news of night was that Survivor wouldn't allow quitters on the jury! Oh...unless they decide they want them on it. Soooo... did anything change?

Now I know I'm a bit biased, but I think people misread Chase as being flat out dumb, when I think his problem is not stupidity but more of an innocent uncontrollable sincerety that has gone so far awry in this game that he ends up unable to shut himself up even when he knows better... Colby kind of had that problem as well, the angst between being fundamentally a "good guy" vs wanting to do what it takes to win the game.

Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines with him being similar to how Colby acted in Season 2 by basically giving away the game. And while Holly isn't exactly as likable or as in the background like Tina was in S2 the finale may play out similarly. If those two are in the final I can see Chase doing something stupid like apologizing to Jane and telling her he doesn't deserve her vote and she should vote Holly.

It's really hard to say who might win at this point as there is no clear cut player left that is fully competent. Plus you have a jury that's full of angry, crazy and indecisive people. After what what went down at this last tribal I'm not sure how they would throw their vote. I get the sense there will be more speeches made than questions asked this year.

I also have to say I love Jane for throwing water on the fire to show that Dan's knees were just fine. He jumped up off the shelter like he had a pair of alligators going for his ankles.

Dang. Just recently finished the first season via Netflix streaming and liked it quite a bit. Its an odd show since many of the characters were not that likable or just wooden but the overall story and individual episodes won me over and kept me interested. It's too bad they don't give these shows a better shot. Even the first season of Fringe wasn't all that hot but got significantly better in the subsequent seasons.

Not much sci-fi to look forward to watching. Not sure if I'll bother finishing The Event and gave up on V a few episodes in. Nothing else sci-fi related has caught my eye.

I haven't purchased much from GoG before but figured with these prices might as well get some of the games. So picked up:

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic (had 1 and 2 but never this one)
Waxworks (Forgot about this game! Had it on the Amiga. Now they just need to get the Elvira games)
Realms of Arkania 1-3 (Had them all but likely not going to dig around trying to find these discs)
Another World (Figure I'd try the enhanced version finally)
Temple of Elemental Evil (still have the CD around somewhere but figure its going to be a pain to get working)
Outcast (ditto on above comment)

Really hope they get the Elvira games. I remember those as actually being pretty good.

Some good 50% dealies the next 7 days:

Wed - 50% off removing Currency Cap
Thur - 50% North Downs quest pack
Sun - 50% Evendim quest pack
Mon(next) - 50% off Inventory bags

North Downs and Everdim should compliment each other well for the post Lone Lands (L25-L30) crowd. We purchased the Everdim pack awhile back when it was 20% off and had a lot of fun there. It's well laid out and looks great. There's an odd leveling gap in there around L32 where quests dry up but then they pick up again around L34 and really hit their stride where there are a large amount of quests offered in the same general area. Another bonus if you're a prospector/miner is the entire zone has huge deposits of Rich Iron/Gold.

I remember hating North Downs when the game first came out. Back then it took forever to get your horse so even at L30 you were running around without one. It just took forever to do any questing in that zone.

Sash is getting more and more annoying, if that's even possible.  Didn't he say he was going to play his idol or was that just BS?

He probably didn't play it because he won individual immunity. I can understand that. But we'll see if he plays it the next time he doesn't win it. It is pretty smart to tell everyone you're going to play it as they are unlikely to vote for you in fear you do actually play it. A good tactic.

I think Sash made the right choice with going with Chase/Holly/Jane. If he actually makes it to the final four and doesn't win final immunity I think they would take him as someone who probably isn't liked over someone like Jane who is. Of course that person who's left out will be pissed and probably give their vote to Sash. On top of that there's three jury members who were part of his alliance (Brenda/NaOnka/Useless Kelly). So maybe the voting will be pretty close if he makes it to the end.

My ideal final 3 for this season would be Chase/Holly/Dan. Dan won't get a single question asked his way. Chase will give stupid answers. And Holly will just be crazy paranoid.

HBO's "Making Of" video for Game of Thrones:

Another boatload of movies were put on streaming the last few days so take a peek at feedflix.

Have two to recommend:

Twilight Samurai - Not your typical samurai flick. It reminding me a bit of Unforgiven as the main character is an unassuming family man financially in trouble that is given a job he doesn't want but is capable of doing. It's mainly a drama with little fighting so have that expectation going in.

Dorm - Coming of age story with a supernatural theme. Saw this a few years ago after a friend recommended it and it really surprised me. I was expecting your typical asian horror flick but it wasn't that at all. There's a couple of WTF culture shock moments in there but otherwise is easily digestible for the Western audience.

A slight nod to The White Ribbon. German film that takes place right before World War 1. It's kinda a Mystery but there's no answers given to anything that happens in the film. You kinda have to draw your own conclusions of who might have done what. Which some will probably like, others (like me) will be just ok with, and then some will hate that there's no resolution. What I enjoyed most about it was just seeing the daily life of this small town in the early 1900's. It was kinda like a dark and gritty version of Wallnut Grove.
1230  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Will you use a public toilet that is hugely soiled? on: December 03, 2010, 01:47:26 AM
Saw the same thing happen where someone apparently missed the entire toilet and had some small explosion while doing their thing. I couldn't figure that out. How do you miss the entire seat? And what the hell is going on to make a splatter pattern like that? It was at least two weeks before I even considered using that stall. If someone actually sat in it while I was in the other stall I'd break protocol and ask what the hell they thought they were doing.

Thankfully our office is pretty decent and while every once in awhile there's some disgusting backup or what not the cleaning crews come by twice daily to make sure everythings in order (poor them). But damn that incident just didn't make a damn bit of sense to me.

So the massive update was added to the game the other day. If you are a F2P person Lowlands is now free for all so you can quest up to about 34-35 level range. There's some nice improvements to the bank to allow easier sorting of items. They added a bunch of items to the various factions where they had little to offer before (e.g horses/weapons/armor/etc). And to help gain faction and fill out those quest leveling gaps they added random daily quests.

They also have a promotion going on the entire month where one new store item each day will be 50% off.

Lots of good ones up there today. Dirt 2 and Metro 2033 are steals. Will probably get Alien vs Predator for that price and eying the Indie Air Pack even though I probably won't try anything but Gratuitous Space Battles.

It seemed like all my Steam Black Friday purchases are impulse buys on games I hadn't considered buying but can't pass up the cheap price on. Had no intention of playing Alpha Protocol or Kane and Lynch 2. And seeing as I have yet to install GTA 4 since purchasing it 2 years ago I probably shouldn't have gotten Episodes from Liberty City. But then again I only spent about $20 on all that.

The one game I was hoping they would have a deal on, Darksiders, didn't appear. Maybe before X-mas.

Yeah, I'd rather not give them my credit card info. I know it's all very safe now on the Internet slywink but I'm still a bit of a chicken.

I don't like doing that either so I do my PSN purchases through Amazon. When you buy PSN content on Amazon you get a code for the game/content then enter that code in to PSN. The content is then unlocked.

I do notice that it sometimes takes a few days for content to appear on Amazon after release. And I'm not sure if they match sale prices if PSN is doing a dealie on a game/content as I don't purchase a whole lot on PSN. But I've gotten a few games and Zen Pinball tables without issues.

If you go to the Video Games section on Amazon you'll see a category for Playstation Network.

I started playing with the gamepad and like that better. But some of the quick switches of the camera angles suck - like when you jump or climb down from somewhere the camera is usually in an awkward location where I can't see what I need to see.

Stealth doesn't seem to be working all that well but it also doesn't seem to matter. Took a mission where I needed to place bugs all around an airport without being detected. There's a gaurd right in front of you when you enter the level. So I moved a bit away from my initial cover and was detected. After killing a bunch of guards I was able to disable the alarm only to have it go off the next time I tried a zipcord. I completed the mission just running and gunning. For some reason the mission was a success and I got a boat loat of money.

Oh well. $5

This is the one of the few movies I've seen where I liked the movie better than the book. I didn't care for the last book so my expectations were not high going in. So I was surprised when I found I didn't want it to end. Definitely a dark film with few light moments. But I was digging that the actors had a wee bit more serious content to chew on. That dance scene in the tent kinda surprised me as when they started I was like "what the hell is this? This is gonna be dumb" but turned out to be sweet.

It was a bit odd to leave on such a down note in the film too. Not a single clap from the audience when it was over.

Its hard to say where this stacks for me in ranking with the other films since it was such a different flavor than the others.
