Hell ya I'm still playing this. 55hrs in and am just posting some spoilers for another very hard mission in the Battles of Ardania DLC. Figure I'd post this in case someone at some point decides to play. The third mission "Fire Wall" had me fuming! But finally got through it with. Here's some notes:

Spoiler for Hiden:
After pulling my hair out on this mission I checked some of the boards and the first thing I found was mention of a bug where if load a save game from this mission that will kick-start some of the events to happen sooner than they should. Mainly the Minotaur and Dragon attacks. So you basically get overwhelmed pretty quickly.

Here's the keys to this mission:

- Get dwarf's as quickly as possible (build 2 dwarf guilds)
- Have at least 1 clerics guild
- Explore the SW corner for the trading post and build that quick
- Clear out the mob generators as your hero's find them
- Do not go to the North where the minotaurs are (use fear if you need to)
- Once your dwarf's get near level 10 start building up your cash
- When you're ready start marking the minotaur to the north with 500gp kill quests
- Do not put money on the destroying the minotaur temple as that will just bring too many to handle
- Put lots of cash on defense of the two towers
- Put 500gp (or whatever you can manage) on new minotaurs that show up
- Use the King avatar when groups of minotaurs appear to be overwhelming your heroes. That will allow the hero's to kill them without taking more damage. Your clerics should heal them up if they got hurt
- When the two towers are built you got it somewhat easy at this point
- Build the dwarf towers around your town to help take out dragons
- Then just continue building your army, find the other towers and do the same tactic with those until they are built
- You have 75 days to build 6 towers

I'm probably one of the few that actually liked the Quarantine remake better than the original but it may be because I saw that version first. I also went in not knowing it was a remake and figuring it was going to be a crummy horror flick. I was wrong.

Still want to see Rec 2 but it hasn't been released here yet.
1083  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Top 50 scariest Horror Films? on: April 05, 2011, 06:35:13 PM
I was looking at "Quatermass and the Pit" wondering what the heck that was. But then saw it was titled "5 Million Years To Earth" in the US. I vaguely recall seeing when I was kid and would like to see it again. Kinda recall it was neat but don't remember being frightened by it at all.

I'd also swap out Evil Dead in place of Evil Dead 2. Except for near the end that one took itself more seriously as a horror flick. I seem to recall 2 was more campy.

Never understood the love for Jacobs Ladder.

Videodrome I know doesn't hold up well as I tried watching it awhile back on Netflix Streaming and it just came across as boring and bizarre.

I'd push Exorcist up to #1 for me. That movie still scares me.

Ok. I realize I'm probably the only one playing this game at the moment but I'm really addicted to this thing. Finished the Kingmaker DLC. Put 47hrs total in to this game and am pumped for the next DLC missions. The last Kingmaker mission was a PITA but finally got it done. Found out you really need to build multiple's of the same guild type to hold your own against the endless waves of vampires and goblins.

Just a few notes on the final Kingmaker mission if anyone plays this at some point:

Spoiler for Hiden:
For that final mission cleric guilds were the key for building a fighting force that wouldn't be wiped out. Once I had 6 clerics out there with all their powers I felt I had a bit of survivability. Once you can add the dwarf's to the fray things start going more your way. And I found that when the goblins attack putting a bounty on the shaman shorten the battles some. Towers are of little help although I had two up at any given time to help out. I only started doing the side quests after I felt I could really hold my own against the goblin waves. The extra cash you get for completing them helps build an even stronger force. But I wasn't in any rush to get the tasks done.

Is there a good brand of 250 scooter out there that's mechanically sound yet can be had at a nice cheap used price? They seem pretty nice and they are automatic and seem better for passengers.

Mine was a Kymco.... made in Taiwan. They're a well-known brand overseas, and mine was built well. I bought it for $3200 brand new, and sold it for $2000 in good shape with 3,000 miles on it.

Any of the Japanese brands are ultra-reliable.

The Italian scooters can be iffy. If there's one you like, be sure to scour the net about it first before buying.

Yeah I hear Kymco is really good. I always liked the look of the Aprilia Sport City scooters (Italian) - they have larger tires and are not expensive. The Honda scooters look to be under 250cc and don't know much about them. The Suzuki Burgman's are popular but are 400cc and above - never cared for the look of them.

You might want to take a peek at the Vespa's in your area. They're supposed to be getting rid of the 250's models in favor of the 300 models so may be able to find some deals there:

Actually there's sale going on now where you can get $1,000 off a 250 model:

Ninja 250? Perhaps Im too old for it. My beard is gray.

Might want to look at the Yamaha V-Star or Honda Rebel for 250 cruisers. The class I took used both of those bikes for teaching with. If I didn't have my heart on a getting a scooter I would have got the V-Star as my first bike.

Scooters have come a long way. I had a 250 a couple of years ago, and it would do almost 80mph. And there are 650cc scooters now that easily top 100

Yeah the Vespa I have is a 250 and will go 85mph before the rev limiter kicks in. I hit that a couple of times on the freeway. But that's pushing it. The bike comfort zone is really around 55mph. There's still plenty of power on hand if you need to accelerate quickly.
1089  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Will be joining the motorcycle a few years on: March 23, 2011, 12:29:11 AM
Take the riding course to get your license before you put money in to anything. That will not only give you the experience you need for the license test but allow you to ride bikes in a "safe" environment. It'll also allow you to see if this is what you want to be doing. Beyond your bike cost you'll also want to factor in equipment as it's pretty expensive too.

This will be my third year riding and I've already had a couple close encounters. The worst of the bunch happened on highway where some idiot in the center lane hit the breaks so they could get off at an exit they passed. There were two cars in front of me and I saw them brake hard. I did the same but started feeling my bike skid. So I let off the breaks and swerved in to the left hand lane avoiding the car that was in front of me which was now almost at a stop. Thankfully no one was in the left-hand lane or it could have gotten bad. The other incidents were mainly people not paying attention but I was so no problem.

But hey its also a hell of a lot of fun the majority of the time. Last year I road my bike (a Vespa) from Chicago to Connecticut and back again. It was fun, boring, exilerating, tiring, stupid and freeing all bunched together. Looking at doing another road trip this year.

1090  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Majesty 2 announced on: March 21, 2011, 12:12:12 AM
Picked this up during the Steam sale a few weeks ago and have been playing it quite a bit (25hrs according to steam). There's something about this game that's very addicting to me.

Still working through the main campaign and had a few tough missions but got through them. Then I hit the third to last mission "Pretenders to the Throne" where you have two kingdoms on either side of you and need to take them out. That mission almost made me give up the game right then and there. None of the strategies I've used before worked and trying something new only ended the same way - my settlement being overrun by powerful Paladins just when I was starting to get things going. Very frustrating. Even after reading some strategies online I would still get overrun.

So if anyone happens to be playing this still and wants yet another strategy for this particular level I'm spoilerizing it before I forget.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Towers are your key for winning in this level. You need lots of them and need to get dwarf towers soonish. Once you have a good tower setup going to stop both kingdoms attacks you can build up forces to attack.

Start building things as far SE of the keep to open up the area where the caravan can be build. Build a warriors + rangers guild and marketplace. Build two defense towers. One will go dead center of the norther part of you keep building - get it as close to the keep as it'll go. The other will go to the SW corner of your keep - again as close as it can go. These two areas are going to mark where you build all your towers.

When the marketplace is up build the carvan (no need to upgrade it). Pump out your warriors/rangers and upgrade their keeps so you get the first level powerup for them.

Build a blacksmith.

Focus on building defense towers. Get 3 in the norther portion of your keep and four in the SW portion. Put them as close together as you can. It won't look pretty but it'll keep the attackers at bay.

Clear the dens that are in the immediate vicinity (wolf + bear den to the South of the keep, wolf den to the East of keep). Don't bother doing anything else with your heroes.

When your defense towers have been upgraded work on upgrading the keep. once you have that upgraded build the dwarf guild. And once you have that start building dwarf defense towers. Put one in the SW corner of the keep first. Then one in the north section of the keep. You'll need at least two in the SW portion to keep attackers at bay. Three would be better.

It's slow going to get enough cash for all that but once you have a stable defense you can start building other guilds, upgrading, exploring and attacking the other keeps.

BTW, I'd recommend attacking the SW keep first as they're the stronger of the two.

Forget about trying to save your villagers and Fast Forwarding the time is a big help on this mission.
1091  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Survivor Redemption Island Rob vs. Russell on: March 18, 2011, 06:38:36 PM
This past episode was pretty boring. The one interesting thing about it was Rob replacing the new hidden immunity idol clue with the old useless one. Since both tribes now have dominant groups in charge, and both of those groups have the hidden immunity, things won't get interesting until them merge and individual immunity is up for grabs. So they basically need a merge in this next episode to keep things interesting or else it'll be either Philip or Stephanie.

I do kinda like Redeption Island for allowing the two teams to trade information or call out people if they have the oppertunity. I'm not sure how big a factor the person coming back in to the game will play.

Got to check it out a bit during lunch. Outside one of the train stations there were about 30 people standing around in white and red uniforms with a 3DS tethered to them. I think it was only me and one other person that was checking it out.

Basically tried out 3 games:

- Lego Star Wars
- Nintendogs
- Some racing game

First being outside it was hard to see the screen. The 3D effect in the first game I tried, Lego Star Wars, didn't seem all that great. I did love the new little controller nubbin you slide around. It worked really well. Not much to say about the game. It was a Lego game so played and looked like one.

The 3D screen in Nintendogs really stood out to me. You could see the depth there pretty easily. I did notice I had to look at the screen at a certain angle to really see the 3D. When I wasn't in the sweet spot I could still see the game fine but the 3D effect didn't look crisp. I never played a Nintendogs game so wasn't sure what I was doing but did manage to give the dog a bath, feed it, and lamely throw some toys.

The third game I tried was some driving game. This had the best 3D out of the games I tried. The game itself was nothing to talk about. Basically a racing game with powerups.

There were a few other games there to try (Madden, Street Fighter, Pilot Wings, Mii something or other) but I got the jist. One of the tethered people asked if I was going to buy it. I was truthful in saying I wouldn't but would likely get it when the second generation comes out. Its neat tech but there's no games on the system right now that make me want to go out and buy it.
1094  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Survivor Redemption Island Rob vs. Russell on: March 11, 2011, 08:22:56 PM
Some of these girls it seems like they're brand new contestants as apparently they don't have enough personality to appear on screen for more than seconds at a time.

A little let down about Russell going and did feel for him when he broke down - you could tell how much Survivor meant to him and he fit it so well. I did love how he went all Hyde again and stirred things up by goading Ralph to reveal info. I'm fine with not seeing Russel on the show for awhile. Say another 4-5 years. It would give him time away from the game to reflect and hopefully come up with a new strategy. I don't buy that he wouldn't come back.

I loved Rob's commentary about Philips poor choice in swimwear and how things were flopping around. It's both an "ew" and "har" comment in one. I really hope Philip sticks around for awhile yet. I'm not even close of being tired of him randomly telling people he's a former Federal Agent. And it wouldn't be fair for the viewers to have him leave before he explained who's getting the Gorillia and/or the Lion.
So far this is a pretty strong season. I'm not sure if its going to be one my favorites but its already memorable.

*modified for clarity sake

I also took paladin as i'm going sword and board (something else I rarely do).  The healing capabilities were a pleasant surprise in that line, too.

I'm going down the Paladin line for my main one and other than the full heal there's not much healing going on. Later down the line you get healed for dealing damage with your triggered shield attacks or blocking with your shield but its not a significant amount of healing. It helps keeps you in the battle a little longer but you'll still need the caster heals or potions.

I do have to say the class is a lot of fun though. It was pretty boring to start with but I think around L15 I began to have a change of heart. Now at 27 I'm really liking the class.

The only complaint I have is output damage is so low that in PvP your role basically becomes to annoy the opposition than to actually kill them. After I finish out the Paladin line I have to look in to lines to raise my damage output.

So it looks like there's no PvP level range implemented for the game. There were a bunch of level 45's hanging out Gloamwood killing all the L20 players. Our guild couldn't put a dent in the few high level players and they basically stopped everyone from being able to quest or do anything in that zone. They really need to put in some limitation there as its no fun entering a battle you have 0 change of winning.
1100  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Divinity 2: Ego Draconis/ Flames of Vengeance add-on/ Dragon Knight Saga info! on: February 28, 2011, 06:10:40 PM
I think the expansion comes bundled with the first game. So you would have to buy "The Dragon Knight Saga" edition to get it.

Steam has both the original game and the bundle (surpisingly the bundle is $10 cheaper). But its still pretty pricey at $40 if you just want the expansion. You probably want to wait until a sale.

And the expansion starts right where the original game left off. In fact there's no pause between the final cut sequence of the first game and the intro of the expansion.
1101  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Divinity 2: Ego Draconis/ Flames of Vengeance add-on/ Dragon Knight Saga info! on: February 24, 2011, 03:51:47 AM
The expansion basically starts out where you get quest after quest. It's a bit overwhelming for awhile. It might be best to just choose one of the quests you have and follow it through.

I basically kept picking up quests till I got to the tree (you'll know it when you see it). Then just picked a quest and tried following through on it to completion or as far as I could go. I widdled down the quests by the time I got to the tree one.

I thought the quests in the expansion were a lot more fun than what was in the original game even though the expansion is just confined to the city. There's a lot of variety and some neat stories to boot.

Haven't heard of Pinball Mania but the others I played the hell out of on the Amiga. They probably don't hold up well to today's video pinball standards (Zen Pinball) but will have to get this for nostalgic purposes.

Balls of Steel, the Duke 3D tie in pinball collection, had some really good tables too - loved the Mutation table. Hopefully they'll get that at some point. It probably holds up a bit better.

That was a great opening for the season. Philip reminds me a bit of a former boss I had. He was so fixated on process and control where certain steps had to be followed exactly before you could get to the final goal. The problem was he would create the process and all those steps he created would turn in to inefficent busywork. If you didn't follow the process exactly he would get all flustered just like Philip was getting.

I suspect he's going to be short lived on that tribe but it will be fun seeing his frustration build until he goes.

Dunno if I'd reccomend this exactly but since it was the strangest movie I've seen I figure I'd mention it. The film is "Dogtooth". Its about a family where the three "kids" (like 20 year olds) have been cut off from the rest of the world. Their parents teach them differently from everyone else. Like words that mean one thing to us mean something completely different to them (a "phone" is a salt shaker apparently). Planes can fall out of the sky and turn in to toy planes. The father brings home a prostitute to have sex with the son weekly.

I started the film thinking I would just check it out for a minute or two but couldn't turn it off. I had to see where the film was going. When the film ended I've never been so vocal. I basically said: "What?" "What?" "WHAT?" "What???" "What just happened?" "What?" "WHAT!?!?"

This film moved waaay beyond "Zardoz" for the strangest film I've ever seen. And it has a dance number that topples the odd dance number from "Napolean Dynamite."

Picked it up on Steam. Once you install the game you have to put in all this registration information including your name/address/bday/email information. I tried skipping that part but then the game runs in "demo mode". So I regretabilly filled in all the information and "unlocked" the full game (didn't I just purchase this?). It seemed like overkill what they were asking for. I got some code afterwards which I'm not sure where it comes in to play.

But I got in the game and played for an hour. Do have to say the game looks nice and runs very well and I like the start so far. Too early to give any real impressions but there's already plenty in this thread.

If they're there you're probably good and can continue. If not you may want to look at restoring a save.

Watched a really good Kung Fu movie - IP Man. I noticed the sequel was out in theaters this week and had a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes so figured I'd give the original a shot.

The movie has some pretty fantastic fighting sequences. There is a ten man vs one fight sequence that's probably one of the best fight sequences I've seen. The film plot starts out like any typical 70's Kung Fu story might but then throws a curve in to the mix. I found the main character, IP, pretty facisnating and you can't help  but root for him. The plot gets a little heavy handed at times in the melodrama and there is a revision to world history at the end that was a bit strange but hell this is a Kung Fu movie.

This film looks great by the way. You could tell a fair amount of money was spent on this.

So if you like or liked Kung Fu movies this is not one to miss.

I'm in the same boat. I was expecting the worst but really enjoying it. I like the tighter format of quick comments/votes and not focusing so much on the bad/goofy auditions. Stephen Tyler is a big reason I'm enjoying it. I like his goofy comments and that he's also intently listening to each contestant and gets in to the auditions at time.

I'm interested in to hearing how they handle the live critiques during the actual show.

But so far one of the best seasons of Idol in awhile.

FYI this is the original Red Faction game from 2001 if you want to save a click to verify.

Woo. Finally finished the expansion. I thought the expansion was better than the original game. Even though you didn't get to use dragon form all that much I thought the quests were a lot of fun and kept me interested throughout. It also had a MUCH better ending to it than the original game.

According to Steam I played 52hrs - it seems like more to me. Reached level 46 by the end and basically was just throwing skill points in to various passive skills I didn't care about. It wasn't a great game but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The 5.1 sound on the PS3 is nice, but being able to control the 360 with my Harmony remote is also nice.

There is an adapter from Logitech/Harmony that you can add to your PS3 that will allow you to use Harmony remotes with the PS3. I bought one after I started using the PS3 Netflix more and more. It's simple to set up and works flawlessly. It was $50 when I got it but I've seen it go on sale for around $30.
