One of my favorite late 80's guilty pleasures showed up on instant. North Shore.

Here's the plot. A young surfing champ from Arizonia (they "surf" in a large pool over there) heads to Hawaii to ride the North Shore waves. It doesn't go as planned for this haole. Along the way he finds love, danger, learns the loco lingo, and a little bit about life too. Plus there's surfing! It's completly 80's cheese but so sincere that you gotta love it.

Now if Netflix gets Band of the Hand I'll be 80's cheese satisfied.
1082  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Books Read in 2011 on: November 01, 2011, 06:17:30 PM
Read the novella "As The World Dies: Untold Tales Vol 1" by Rhiannon Frater the other day. If you like zombie stories and haven't read her "As the World Dies" trilogy I would get on that. Its one of the best zombie series I've read. The trilogy is being re-release by Tor and only the first book is available. The second book is due out on the 8th. The last one isn't due out till April of next year.

But there's also this "Tales" book that got released. It has two stories in it. The first one is really short. It's a prequel to the main character and won't do much for anyone who hasn't read the series but answers a bit of a mystery. The second story however can be read by those who haven't read the series and still be enjoyed. It deals with a minor character from the book and shows his initial days of the zombie outbreak, how he survived and how he got where he was in the trilogy. Its a quick read you can complete in two or three hours but is a page turner.

There are a few minor spoilerish scenes but nothing that would ruin reading the books later.

I surprised myself by getting a little choked up when a couple of the characters from the trilogy entered the story. I hadn't realized I had grown attached to them till they were there on the page. Will have to read those books again soon.

In any case Tales is $3 on Kindle. Worth it for those who have read the trilogy. For those that haven't you would have to judge is $3 worth a few hours reading; but I'd recommend the first book in the series as a starter.

Yeah I get kicked every once in awhile as a Huntress. Its silly as you're able to contribute just fine. But I typically limit myself to putting down two dynamite stacks and spend the rest of my gems on repairing and upgrading other players defenses.

Also been coming across the phenomenon where players won't launch a match. They'll just sit in the tavern even when there are 4 people there. Very annoying.

I also wish they hadn't killed of Otis as that actor is one of the better character actors out there.  I love his work and would have enjoyed seeing him interact with a cast of that caliber.

Technically I guess he could come back.

But I too think it was more a selfish act. He was trying to save himself first and formost. You could see the desperation earlier when he was on the fence. Plus he could have easily shot to the head for mercy sake but didn't even do that.

He's pretty cold blooded and I like the way this show is going now. smile

1085  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] American Horror Story on: October 28, 2011, 05:52:21 PM
Yeah this first part of the Halloween episode was pretty strong. I hope Zachary Quinto keeps making re-appearances as he and his partner made compelling characters (wonder if his recently coming out was partly due to this episode coming up). I want to know what was on the monitor for the ultrasound.

The show definitely has me grabbed for the mystery surrounding whats going on. But I find I have no invested interest in any of the family characters or if they die or not.
1086  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] The X Factor on: October 27, 2011, 06:35:21 PM
I had the same problem with the volume. The vocals were very loud over the music or you could barely hear them over the music. I'm not sure if that's just due to it being a live show and shit happens or its intentional. That Simone girl got pretty brutalized by her vocals being so loud - really heard how bad she was.

But yeah it wasn't too much of a surprise about the sacrificial lambs. I had started noticing American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance puts through a few questionable contestants that are typically gone in the first few weeks so maybe thats the best way to put focus on the ones that are good.

Was also surprised on the brother duo going home. That had a pretty crappy song and didn't do anything with it as a duo. They basically just said I'm gonna sing this part first, then we join in for a bunch, then you end it. Would liked to have seen them play with the song a big more, maybe drop the music few a bit so they could show off their harmonizing. Or even doing a short little solo on that mandolin to keep it interesting. Oh well.

I didn't like the girls group at all. To me it sounded like there were a couple of college girls hanging around their dorm and a song comes on they all know so they start singing it.

The best of the night for me were Leroy, Josh and Drew. And I agree that Melanie got pushed a bit too far on that one for a first song.

And I don't know if its just me but the host seems to rub me the wrong way. Seems a bit too uptight.

One more nitpick since I'm in a bad mood. The contestants have to stop saying "thank you so much" after every compliment.

I sorta remember this game. I recall the T-Rex running across the road and having to avoid him and being disappointed when I'd do a lap and he wasn't there. Don't recall the races with the UFOs or ape or anything like that. Surprised they didn't include those in the screencaps. In any case I seem to recall this was a pretty bad arcade racer and difficult to boot.
1088  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dungeon Defenders on: October 24, 2011, 06:00:40 PM
Put several hours in to this over the weekend. A lot of fun.

Playing the game solo is possible but this is really meant to be an online game. Pretty happy with the online quick match play for the most part. Been in groups where everyone was learning the ropes (fun), people kinda knew what they were doing (very fun), and groups where they wanted to micro-manage everything (not fun).

Been mainly playing the Huntress as I want the portal gun (at L25 I think). I find I'm not contributing too much after the first few waves. The dynamite does a ton of damage but the maintenance on it is high. The ranged attack also has way too long of a reload time to make any effective damage dealer when some of the beefier enemies show up. The Huntress seems to be mainly used for repair/upgrade work during most matches. However I did find that the Huntress is great to have around when things start going bad. When defenses fail I'm able to run around and start throwing down dynamite and gas traps to help take care of the overflow.

Did the first boss fight with others that hadn't seem to have done it before either. So it was fun discovering how to beat the boss as well as trying to maintain all defenses.

So having a ball with this one. Enjoying it much more than Orcs Must Die - although I like that one too.

1090  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] The X Factor on: October 19, 2011, 06:48:48 PM
That was a 30 minute show dragged out for two hours. Even fast forwarding it took an hour to watch.

Here's my thoughts:

- Over 30s have the best talent but none of them are likely to win as they are going to choose someone current and that will last 5 years
- Only boys choice that I'd be interested in following is the druggie. And I can't figure out why LA chose the crooner - although it seems like each group has one easy choice for first one out
- Groups can all go the first day
- Good choices for the girls. Early prediction is the girl that did the Bieber "baby" song will win as she's vocally talented, and is current
- They need to get rid of Nicole Scherzinger. She is so fake its hard to watch her. And to tell 60 year old LeRoy that she wasn't sure he wanted it...lady he's 60 years old and would not be there if he didn't want it.
1091  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: PS3 - turns itself on on: October 18, 2011, 02:05:11 AM
For the sake of completion and in case someone else runs in to this the issue was the Harmony PS3 adapater. It looks like during the last update it forgot the device was registered. I guess for some reason the adapter would try connecting to the PS3 or send a "PS3 turn on" signal - not sure why.

In any case the solution was simple. Re-register the adapter on the PS3.

Everything has been working as it should.

There was a LOT of post production work done to the vocals, so they mostly sounded pretty good, but some I thought were just overdone to the point that it didn't really sound much like the person did during previous auditions.

I noticed that too - hard not to. They were playing with "reality" a bit too much for me. I think for that girls group it looked like the syncing was totally off at points.

But I'll still watch.  icon_frown

Oh man. Wizards Crown was great strategy/rpg but brutally difficult. I remember my characters bleeding all the time and needing a whole lot of bandages. And I seem to recall losing battles because I didn't purchase enough bandages to fix my guys up. Brutal.

Would probably give Wizards Crown another shot. Never did get the sequel for some reason. That was such a great time in computer gaming for RPGs.

I either had Knights of Legend on the C64 or //e. It ran so slow since it was accessing the disk just about any time you did something or it kept prompting you to swap disks - almost unplayable. It was horrible since I could see there was a meaty RPG there to play. If GoG got it I'd likely get it.
1096  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Survivor: Fall 2011 on: October 13, 2011, 06:13:56 PM
Pretty good episode. The challenge with the meat was probably one of the most disgusting and awesome challenges they've done. The vote was the highlight though. There's been too many seasons where a group of people have a chance to change up the game for the better and they never take advantage of it. I'm glad these guys did. Although I found it hilarious that Keith and Whitney would throw their votes away to make it seem like they're still with Ozzy. I don't know how those two guys are going to spin that to make it seem positive.

But glad it turned out the way it did. I hate the tail coat riders.

Jesus, Darklands. I think I still have the original box and 7 or 8 odd 3.5 disks for it. I remember it being a buggy mess and getting frustrated with it. Did those bugs ever get squashed?

Now they just need to get Knights of Legend. It might actually run well on current systems.

Agreed. That episode was a let down.

Here's my unspecific semi-no spoiler recap of why the episode sucked:

Spoiler for Hiden:
The setting was basically a typically Star Trek episode plot with a virus causing amnesia, fear of  the virus spreading and a core team trying to find a way to stop it before it kills them. However they somehow butchered any tension gained from the setup, threw in a bunch of stupid stuff, and made the cure so obvious early on that by the time they figure it out near the very end you wonder how these people could be in the medical profession.

That said the guitar made an appearance and there was some strumming.

No. Not part of PSN.

The unplugging or turning thing off I would like to avoid as its a hassle to get behind the media center. I have everything set up so I don't have go in there.

It didn't turn on last night when I had the controller out of the room so I'm wondering if the controller is defective. The other thing I'm thinking it could be is the Harmony adapter. Going to try re-syncing both of those to the PS3 and see if it stops.
1102  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Orcs Must Die! on: October 12, 2011, 06:08:06 PM
I'm enjoying the game quite a bit. It's a 3rd person tower defense game like Sanctum but much better in my opinion. The defenses you can place are quite fun and have different uses.

My only complaint so far is that there are not enough waves. The level is over just as you're starting to build up your defenses. I'm hoping this is just for the few several missions as each you introduces to the level and how the new defenses work.
1103  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / PS3 - turns itself on on: October 12, 2011, 12:50:57 AM
Been having an odd issue with the PS3 of late. I found that its turning itself on. At first I blamed my wife (always a good tactic!) but then I saw it turn on when I was in the same room. I did the standard thing by taking the batteries out of all remotes (even though they're IR) and the batteries out of the Wii remotes (think they're bluetooth) then went upstairs. About 30 minutes later I heard it pop on. No one was in the room and the room was dark.

I have the PS3 controller removed from the room now so will see if that does anything.

Anyone run across this before or recently? I've had the PS3 for a few years now and this is the first it's happened. Haven't introduced any new bluetooth devices in to the house hold. There internet hasn't been much help since most people are reporting the issue back in 2007 and it having to do with the PSP, routers or light sources (sheesh).

1111  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Steam Deals Thread: Broken Sword Series + Fable 3 Sale on: October 06, 2011, 06:32:47 PM
I really liked Fable 3. Put 41hrs in to it. It's more of the same but not quite as good as Fable 2. I think it got an unessisarily bad rap. There is so much to do in the game, a lot of fun quests, and a neat world to explore.

I also purchased all the DLC. Here's my feelings on those:

Dog Outfit - Put it on once
Industral Knight Outfit - badass...wore this quite a bit
Dog Breed Set - mainly used the clockwork dog which was neat or just stuck with the default one.
Understone Quest Pack - This actually adds a new area to Fable and its kinda a hommage to the Fallout games. But its short and buggy (textures go missing, framerate issues at time, other oddities)
Traitors Keep Quest Pack - This doesn't kick in till after you finish the game. It's a pretty meaty expansion with a few new areas to discover and a bunch of new quests. I enjoyed it.

Adding all the DLC is a bit of a confusing mess as you have to go through Windows Live - also make sure to grab the few free DLC content you see on there. Co-op is also a bit of a confusing mess to get going but when my wife and I got it working it worked flawlessly.

They're both "decent" as you said. The sequel is about as good but doesn't quite stand out either. Some good characters and there was enough mystery for me to easily hang with it to see where it went.

Can't go wrong with the first one for $2.

I still have/use my 120 regularly but its getting a bit embarrassing using it as its comparatively bulky to everything else and the touch pad is so retro. Still like it though. Still have 60MB of storage left and like the Zune software itself.

A boatload of TV shows and movies were put on Netflix the other day. One of the highlights is the entire The Wonder Years series. Some other notables are Frasier, Warehouse 13, DS9, and the last season of Psych. Not much in the way of maintream flicks but did see they had Tron Legacy up there.

Yeah Ozzy's tribe isn't too interesting. It would be nice to see if there is some upset of power there and Ozzy goes home, or at least has to use the idol to stay alive, but I'm not buying it. People have a habit of just laying down and letting things happen as long as it isn't them chosen next - until it is it's too late and they can't do anything to stop it. So hopefully this Cochran thing pans out or a bit or Ozzy's "brother" (can't think of his name) pulls something off sooner than later.

For the other tribe my wishful thinking is that they get rid of Brandon. Then Mikayla (not that she deserves it) and the two of them have to live on and face off against each other on Redemption Island. ::pray to the TV gods::

Agree. I can't stand the dubs. I really wanted to watch "Ichi" but its all dubbed and couldn't listen to more than 10 minutes it.  Also wanted to see the Swedish film "Together" but its almost impossible to watch with that bad dubbing. I'm hoping Netflix will offer subtitled/dubbed audio options at some future point.

Tori Amos
Night of the Hunters

This is her new album that came out a few days ago. In my opinion its her best album since her first - she hasn't sounded better. A few tracks also feature her daughter who has a very unique voice. Check her out on these track samples: Job's Coffin, Cactus Practice, The Chase and Snowblind. I hope she sticks with singing. In any case this is a concept album so its just vocals, piano, strings and wood instruments.
