1081  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Kindle Virgin - Please advise on: July 23, 2010, 06:51:56 PM
For zombie books I'd recommend the As the World Dies books trilogy by Rhiannon Frater. I don't recall seeing anyone mention these books here. They're pretty inexpensive on Kindle compared to the print version cost so the investment is pretty minimal. I can easily say these books are some of my favorite zombie books, right up there with World War Z. The covers of the books look like they are for young adults but you quickly find out they are not.

Well written characters, constant fights for survival, some good laughs, some bleak moments and a satisfying ending round out this fantastic trilogy.
1082  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Walking Dead stroll onto AMC on: July 20, 2010, 06:19:58 PM
Well I like what he said about wanting to eventually veer off from the comic story. After the first book (not sure what issues that covers) the story became stuff we've already seen or read before in other zombie books/movies. The books have a good cast but not sure the writer knew exactly what to do with them except kill them off, drive them insane, or maim them.
1083  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Inception, Nolan's latest film on: July 18, 2010, 04:49:27 AM
Definitely loved the film. My only (minor) complaint was the architect team member contributions seemed under utilized. I figured with as much time as they spent with that character they would use some of those maze/optical illusion like talents. I can only recall two instances where their talent came in to play. I was anticipating some crazy crap going on but I guess there was plenty of strange things going on to throw even more in there.

BTW saw this at a Muvico theater which was an interesting experience. Muvico is this upscale movie theater. It has a VIP balcony where you can reserve seats. You pay a premium for it but get some benefits along with it. The main benefit being are these oversized "love seats". They are the most comfortable movie theater seats I've sat in ever. It basically sits two people with some room to spare . There's also a nice gap between seats so your not too aware of anyone else near you - other than your loved one. It almost made it seem like a private showing. As mentioned you pay a premium for it ($16 a ticket) but damn if it wasn't well worth it for this film.

If you have one of these theaters near you its worth checking at out least once.

The artwork looks good for that. But will try and hold off for the Game of the Year edition (or whatever they'll call it) so I don't buy the game twice like I did F3.

I never had it either but played it a few times in either JC Pennys/Sears/etc. I didn't understand the game by just playing it in the store so begged the parents for it.

You can play the original Haunted House, as well as other A2600 games, online here: http://www.2600online.com/hauntedhouse.asp

This could be fun. Been awhile since I've tried a Commando's style game.

Still not sure why no one has made a good action/stratgey zombie game where you have to forage for resources and can build/upgrade defenses. Maybe its just me wanting one of those.

Neat idea. Initally I was thinking they should do this with more Atari 2600 classics but as I look through the list there isn't really any I would get too excited about seeing an update. Maybe the Artillery Duel/Chuck Norris Superkicks pack.

1090  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Champions Online (Cryptic's new MMO) on: June 29, 2010, 03:07:46 AM
For $7 and 30-days access you're not wasting anything. The game is a lot of fun with all the different powers but its lacking content and after awhile the quests are more of the same. But I think for 30 days you should have a lot of fun with it. If you play somewhat frequently I'd say at the 60-day mark the game will feel a bit stale.

I did this over the weekend. Seemed to work fine, been installing some of the new purchases to a larger drive and all the old stuff is working fine also.

ah, this is what I was thinking off - but didnt have time to search the forums myself :-)

I went through this process awhile back moving my steam games to a new drive. It wasn't all that bad. Although it took forever to copy all the installed games from one drive to another. But it was a one time thing - or at least an infrequent process - so no biggie. Didn't run in to any issues afterwards.
1092  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Overlord/Overlord 2 on: June 26, 2010, 02:03:06 PM
The first Overlord was great. Its similar in play to Pikman. I liked the humor to it too and how it poked fun at fantasy games.

I'll also mirror that using a controller is the way to go to play this one.

Overlord 2 is more of the same with better graphics but I didn't find it as fun to play as the original for some reason. It started off good then kinda lost its charm. If you enjoyed the first one its certainly worth getting cheap but just don't go in to that one expecting a better experience. Plenty of good gaming in the original and the add-on though.
1093  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Onlive beta on: June 26, 2010, 05:00:10 AM
I got in on the founders thing so played the service some tonight. Overall feeling of the service is that its ok. You definetly play games through it but from the three games I tried its a bit hit or miss.

First off I have a cable connection and am playing this through an ok Desktop. It can run Crysis on high graphics (but not ultra) and what not. The first game I tried was the Harry Potter Lego demo. This worked the best out of the bunch. Controls were responsive and it looked decent. The graphics were stuck at running at 1280x800 (or something along those lines) so on my 1680 x 1050 native resolution mointor graphics looked a bit muddy at times. Certainly not the sharpness I would get if run at native. Also because it was running at that resolution there were black bars above and below the play screen.

There was no way I could see to change monitor resolution. I'm not sure if they plan on changing that in the future.

Anyways the game ran fine and was responsive and fun to boot (I'm a Harry Potter fan). I liked that the game started right up without a need for an install. So for an initial impression I was pretty positive.

The second game I tried was Just Cause 2. I never played the game but knew from reading here and elsewhere the graphics are supposed to be amazing. I wasn't blown away with what I was seeing here. The graphics looked slightly muddy...worse than Harry.  I also noticed a split second delay in movement. And when I would spin around there was noticible clipping. But I got used to it pretty quickly and just continued on.

The game was playable but I felt like I was being denied the entire experience due to the muddy graphics. It was particularly apparent when looking at things in the distance. The further away things were the more muddy they got.

One thing that was fun was the alert telling you that someone is watching your game. This was actually kinda neat as I figured I'd try and put on a good show and get a bit reckless with the firefights. Unfortunatly one person spectated as I was trying to figure out how to select then throw some C4 which took a good 2 minutes. So I kinda like the addtion of the spectator mode as you feel like you need to up your game.

The final game I tried was Dirt 2. I'm very familar with this game and it runs, looks, and plays fantasticly on my computer. My experience with this game on OnLive was almost unplayable. The graphics were so muddy that it was hard to see when corners were coming up. You end up crashing a lot or have to stay on the CPU's ass so you can tell when a corner is coming up.

The controls seemd fine. I didn't notice the delay but was using the Xbox controller for this game so that may have hidden it some. But yeah the muddy graphics killed it.

I'll still give the service a try throughout the year and hopefully there are some improvements along the way.

Yeah one of these finally opened up here recently. Love their burgers and fries. Good BBQ sauce and also liked adding A-1 to the burger.

The one that got pimped was Sonic and those have started opening up recently here too. Tried it once but it really didn't do anything for me. There's also Fat Burger but there are only two in the state and none are close - maybe its for the best.

If it was no subscription fee these prices wouldn't be bad. But due to the subscription fees I can never see buying a game there.

I can see doing a 3 or 5 day rental during this first "free" year but none of the games on that list that offer rental interest me.

Sounds like the Serpent Lantern is a long group quest. They really need to do what AoC did and get an expansion pack out there with all new PvE content.

I do like the idea behind their Vet rewards that each 100 days you get a 5% experience boost when you play L1-15. Should make getting past those starting missions a lot quicker - but would also like they add new starting areas to keep it fresh.

while waiting for DLC, you can try I Hate Mountains, a fan made campaign set in the great outdoors.

Only had a chance to play the first two levels so far. That second level is one of the best L4D levels I've played. It takes place at a mountain lodge that was set up as a safe zone. Very intense from start to finish and one of the best designed levels for the series. Its oozing with atmosphere with almost every room giving a glimpse of how those survivors lived there before it went to hell...and then how they died after.

Can't wait to try the others tomorrow.

I can recall the family renting VCRs from the local video stores before they got inexpensive enough to buy. This was back when they were all metal and had the pop-up tape loading mechanism. Plus a WIRED remote control. Think our first purchased VCR was a Fisher 4-head hi-fi VCR. Now that was technology.

1111  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: AoC official forum Dev Postings of note on: June 03, 2010, 06:56:25 PM
Yeah, I haven't run in to any lack of quests until recently but I think that is by design. I'm almost L30 and getting a bit too big for the current zone I'm questing in (Wild Lands) and its starting to push me to do quests in the next zone (Borderlands?). There's a bit of a gap between the two but I'll likely just jump over to Cimmeria or Kheims L20-L30 zone and use those quests to level up. They should have plenty of quests available.

Outside of Tortage I've only run in to a few instances where other users were trying to do the same quest where I'd have to either wait my turn or group up for a bit. I'd say its on par with what I'd hit in WoW and EQ2 or other mature MMOs. For Tortage you'll run in to this a bit more as everyone is going through the same quests. Underhalls seemed to be the most annoying part as you'd have to wait your turn often. Outside of that it wasn't too bad.

1113  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Atari goes all a GOG on: June 03, 2010, 06:38:28 PM
Well I can kinda see it being a bit silly to put recent releases on GOG as there are several other digital distribution sites that also offer the game. The only benefit is the DRM removal. I'd rather continue to seeing GOG focus on getting the "older" games than more recent releases. That's what I attribute the site with and would love the focus to stay in that area.

'course I'm not putting money where my mouth is. I've only purchased 3 games from GoG since it's been in beta. So what I want may not be financially what they need. But if they were to expand to Amiga emulated games I'd likely spend some serious $$ on Psygnosis and Cinemaware games.
1114  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: AoC official forum Dev Postings of note on: June 01, 2010, 06:38:36 PM
Just started playing this again and noticed people in chat asking for more players to launch the PvP matches. I'm on a PvE server and I do have to say I haven't bothered to try and get in a PvP match. Asking for players to join the PvP matches is a bit of a turnoff too as it makes me think it isn't really worth it if no one is doing it in the first place.

I'll eventually give it a shot but am in no rush.

I do have to say the game is a lot better this second time around than the initial 1 month I played way back when. The combat seems a lot slicker and progression a lot quicker (5 days of playing an already have a L23 Conq and L27 assassin). Feats seem to have been tweaked too as both my characters seem like killing machines with the Feat choices - I don't recall choosing Feats having such a dramatic effect. Its too bad they still haven't introduced mounts before L40 though. Jogging/Sprinting just sucks.

Even though Lee's home town is like two towns over still wasn't feeling much interest in him and thought Crystal was the better singer. However I think he's the better American Idol winner choice for what it is. Crystal didn't quite fit in the mold of that. God knows what her first album would be like if she won - pop something or other. Hopefully 2nd place gives a bit more freedom in music style.

I couldn't believe all the people they were showing at Mount Prospect green. Kinda wish I'd gone to that now or to his "concert" at Arlington Park. Oh well.

When I went through Mount Prospect today I was expecting a bunch of Lee fanfare but other than the old "vote 4 Lee" and "good luck Lee" posters there was nothing. Even the little LED display in downtown Mount Prospect was flashing news of some upcoming play instead of a congratulations message.

I'll probably head out there this weekend and take a few pictures of the signs for prosperity sake. But looks like the town is ready to move on as am I with American Idol.

1119  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains on: May 17, 2010, 06:39:38 PM
Parvity wuz robbed!

Another bitter jury that had a difficult time putting personal feelings aside for gameplay. While I was ok with Sandra winning I don't think she deserved it as she really didn't have much game. The only moves she had that I can remember were 1) Playing on Russells fears and getting him to vote out Coach. 2) Finding an Hidden Immunity Idol (HII). Parvity seemed to be gunned for since day 1 even by the Hero tribe before they merged (the JT letter). She also made one of the biggest plays of the game giving away the two hidden immunity idols (one to Sandra no less) to keep the Villains with the majority after the merge. Plus having to tip-toe with Russell to keep him from feeling like she was betraying him could not have been easy for 39 days.

But it seemed like most of the jury already made up their minds on who they would vote for before they got there. I've never seen a final tribal council with so few questions. It was mainly all statements. That means the remaining survivors don't have the opportunity to sell themselves so they just have to sit there and see how the votes play out. It robs both the jury members and viewers or any interesting insights the survivors can provide as well as sway votes based on their responses.

They need to tweak the final tribal council and allow the survivors to respond to jury members if they make a statement. Or bring back the option to plead a final case where the survivors can address some of statements the jury has brought up.

In any case Russell does a terrible job at selling himself at the end. On par with Amanda. Given what they showed at the jury and on the reunion show he has no end game. Given the last few episodes he was really shooting himself in the foot in getting votes. Out of everyone on this season though I'd put Russell in spot #2 for top player with Parvity still winning at #1.

Speaking of the #2 spot. How the hell could Rupert be #2 for that Sprint favorite player vote? What was likable about Rupert this season? And how did Erik not win for dumbest Survivor moves? He had the haircut to prove it. Speaking of dumb - Colby. But he did have one interesting insight about not allowing the contestants to go in the water or jungle. I wonder what that decision was about - and agree it takes the adventure out of the game.

Overall one of the best seasons of Survivor despite another finale let down.

I honestly don't see how any season of Survivor will ever be able to compare with this one again.

I agree. The last few seasons have topped the one preceeding it. For me it started with Fans vs Favorites (Season 16) which I thought was almost as entertaining as the original.

Quote
Last night's flip almost felt like it was more for our entertainment than it was for strategy.  While in principle I agreed it was to his best interest to split the girls, did he really have to do it so stupidly?  I guess you can argue that crap worked in his original season against the dumb chicks he was with, but he's already seen how crafty Parvati is, did he really think he could get away with playing the 2 of them against each other?

I think he lost his mind around there. The only thing I can think of why he did it when he did it was he had immunity so whatever he did it couldn't hurt him that night. In past Survivor episodes when people win the immunity idol they sometimes get in everyone's face. But the tactic he used was not deftly done by a long shot.

Quote
They should just end it here because next season is poised to be a real letdown.

I know. How much better can it get? Although like I mentioned before the last 4 seasons have topped the one before. But I gotta think it has peaked at 20.

What they do need to do for the next season is make the hidden immunity idols all look like Russell.
