Interesting idea for a sale.
1082  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Wasted on Steam (calculates your Steam stats) on: September 20, 2011, 10:09:51 PM
Pop in your Steam ID here:

Here are my stats:

•Has logged 774.4 hours of playtime — that's 32 days, 6 hours, and 24 minutes worth
•Has spent the most time playing Dragon Age: Origins, which accounts for 9.0% of their playtime
•Has played 104 games, while 140 remain untouched frown you can also view unplayed and played games
•Owns 244 games for a total worth of $2323.36 (at the games' current prices)
•Eleven games Crawley currently owns are on sale. View all of them?
•Their overall account cost per hour of gametime of the games list below is $3.00

Dragon Age: Origins as the most time played surprised me. I had put in 69.4 hours in to that game. I thought Majesty 2 would be the top one - I put 69.1 hours in to that. Bastion I played through twice and only racked up 12.6 hours. 140 games untouched...ugh.

Twor World 2 is on sale for $24.99, plus it's expansion nis 10% off/

It's a decent game but for one that's been out awhile still seems like it should have been about $20 or less for the main game. Will wait till the expansion gets to around $15.

I don't understand the logic if banking your business on streaming only unless you can get new releases at the time of release.  I don't want to watch old movies, I want to see the stuff I didn't catch in theaters.  Surely I can't be the only one who thinks that way.  Are there really enough people out there watching old movies over and over again to bank your entire business on streaming?

I don't know about watching old movies over and over but the streaming service has certainly gotten me to watch a number of non-blockbuster flicks I've really enjoyed - either stuff that's been reccomedned here or stuff I've discovered on my own. I've kinda gotten used that. They also have a pretty good selection of television programs on streaming, many decent ones I missed when they first began airing (Nip & Tuck, Pawn Stars, and now BreakingBad). I have 139 items in my streaming queue which is plenty of stuff to go through at the moment.

So for me the $8 a month is fair for what I get but realize it's not going to be desirable for everyone (or most).

I think they're also right on banking on streaming and winding down the DVD service. If the post office starts cutting back on distribution days or continues raising the price of postage that'll hurt. Better to switch the focus when they have the money to rather than wait for a last ditch effort.
1085  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Survivor: Fall 2011 on: September 15, 2011, 07:07:27 PM
I thought it was a good start. I thought I would enjoy Ozzy coming back and hating Coach coming back but its the other way around. Ozzy comes across as a bit arrogant and I hate that it looks like his tribe is looking so much to him, like they did Rob last season. I loved how no one wanted coach at the start but then it seems there was a bit of a turn around by the end of the show where a good number of people on his tribe were accepting him.

Cochran certainly stands out but man for someone who knows the show so well he was making an awful lot of mistakes. He didn't want to get in the water. It doesn't look like he prepared any basic camping skills. He started arguing with people early. In the tribal council he was basically digging his grave by bad mouthing Semhar. But then he talked his way back in saying how he was an open book (only gotta teach me once) which is pretty good. Then talked himself right out agian by prattling on some other complaints about Semhar just standing by the pot of water. I think he'll be gone soon.

I thought some of the other cast members they featured a bit will also be good. There's Jim who is going to rub everyone the wrong way. Dawn the mother who had a bit of a breakdown - can she pull it together? Brandon the leering, preaching, Hantz clan member who is going to see if he can keep his shirt on. Christine who fooled no one by looking for the idol immediatly. And Papabear who is probably too friendly for his own good. So some good short term fireworks.

I'm curious to see more of the Rick the cowboy as he just stands out visuallly. Then there was that Albert guy who pulled that one tribe member up the wall by sheer strength - want to see how he does in challenages. Sophie seems like she may be a long term PITA but so far she's only showing that side via the personal interviews - if she's keeping her opinions just to that and playing the game she could be a player.

I hope to god the tribe Ozzy is on is not going to give him much say and should put him in his place sooner than later. Right now most of them seem to be looking to him for answers.

But I think it was a good start and I'm hopeful the contestants start showing a bit more initiative rather than the ones from last season.
1086  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Survivor: Fall 2011 on: September 14, 2011, 10:02:12 PM
I don't think the 2 returning cast members is a spoiler. They've had at least one article about them on EW awhile back. It's Ozzie and Coach for those that are not following.

Ozzie did say a viable strategy for him would be to get voted out to redemption island and just keep winning there - which might be possible for him. But other than that so far this season doesn't look too interesting. Might feel different after tonight.

1091  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dead Island on: September 09, 2011, 03:22:56 AM
I'm liking the analog controls more. I found out that you can target specific body parts. Basically you have to have the recticle on the body part you want to attack BEFORE you go in to combat mode (left trigger). Then all your swings aim for that body part. I've been crushing heads, chopping off limbs, all sorts of grusome things.

Also found that jump kicking almost always knocks the zombie down. Very helpful when you have to deal with several zombies at once.
1092  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mystery GOG countdown (now general GOG discussion) on: September 08, 2011, 05:53:48 PM
Dunno if I could play through 4 and 5 again. U6 I missed completely. I had an older PC at the time and the requirements for that were too high. By the time I got a new computer U7 was out and just went right to that and didn't look back.

U9 is the other one I'd probably try. Recall having the demo and it ran like crap so not getting the game - which ended up being a good idea since the release was almost unplayable. But I'd still buy it for cheap just to have it. smile
1093  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dead Island on: September 08, 2011, 05:40:10 PM
I switched over to using my 360 controller and am finding that works really well with the game. I'll stick with using it over the mouse/keyboard. I also am trying the analog combat controls, where you use the right controller to swing your weapon. It took a bit to get a hang of but is pretty satisfying when you do. Not sure I'll stick with it though. One issue is if you invert your control scheme it doesn't invert the combat controls which is annoying. Another is I'm finding it hard to smack zombies with the controls once they are on the ground. Then I keep having a reoccurring situation where a pack of zombies shamble towards me, I wind up for my initial swing, and miss. The zombies get all on me and I go in to panic mode. I forgetting how to fight, take a bunch of damage, and run away. But maybe that's not such a bad thing as its made for some real tense situations.

I have to say I'm really enjoying the game so far. I'm only a few hours in though but am eating it up. Would like to try some co-op once its fixed.

Any interest here?

There was someone who posted a similar screencaps on the Dead Island forums on Steam. Looks like one other person who had the same issue had the gamma all the way up:

I know I had to turn it down quite a bit. It says so the "Dead Island" logo is barely visible but I had to turn it well below being visible.
1095  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Free to Play (DDO and LOTR online), couple questions on: September 07, 2011, 06:38:10 PM
We returned to the game as Premium players (as we had subscribed before they changed to FTP) and purchased a $50 point pack when they ran a special where they added additional bonus points to the existing packages bonus points. So we gained like an extra two thousand points on top of the bonus points you already get from the package. It basically gave us a large amount of points to spend and we were able to purchase the two necessity items (bag slots + gold cap removal). Then we just waited for sales to use our remaining points on quest packs, skirmishes and other items we wanted. Since they had sales weekly, and the always good holiday sales, it wasn't long before we had a fair number of the quest packs to take us up to L50, a few skirmishes, and some other smaller items.

We ended up purchasing the Moria expansion for about $20 at a store but they had a sale not too much later that was about the equivalent price in points. That expansion also gave us two new classes and two more character slots.

We purchased a $30 point pack later (same bonus points offer) to get the Murkwood expansion and a few other quest packs and skirmishes. So we pumped in about $100x2 in to the free to play model to get most of the game and expansions which isn't too bad in my opinion. You can spend far less and still get a lot of out the game.

Watched a couple more good ones recently.

"The Reef", is an Aussie shark attack film. Its somewhat by the books as far as those films go but it looks great and gets the tension right.

The other two were mentioned here before. The Korean films "I Saw the Devil", which is bloody violent but compelling to watch, and "The Man From Nowhere" which has a bit of a "The Professional" feel to it.
1097  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Quick Netflix Streaming Question on: August 22, 2011, 08:55:29 PM
You'll also want to use Feedflix ( to help find new movies that recently arrived for streaming and ones that will arrive soon. Its easier to go through that list than the Netflix web site. And I've notived Feedflix list is more up to date than the Netflix site. I've noticed with some films/shows its taken about 24 hours for the shows to appear in the "New Movies/TV shows" listing on Netflix after release. Feedflix correctly lists when streaming shows are available. You just need to search on the film/show and add it to the queue and start watching.
1098  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Netflix Instant Watch recommendation thread on: August 19, 2011, 12:33:33 AM
13 Assassins is an action packed film that was pretty decent. Its in the vien of "7 Samurai" where a bunch of samurai with big personalities take on a much larger force. There's a few spots where it went slightly too far taking liberties with reality but other than that it's a fun and bloody action picture.
1099  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Need suggestion for gaming podcast on: August 18, 2011, 06:08:58 PM
Gamers with Jobs is probably my favorite. They mainly focus on computer/video games but will talk about card/board games at times as well as iPhone/iPad games. Every once in awhile they'll get guest game creators to join their calls and usually talk about their games a bit. Kev Levine (Thief/System Shock/Bioshock) goes on every once in awhile and is usually pretty fun to listen to. The show is best when they have the main crew together but I also like that they'll swtich things up and have a secondary crew do podcasts as well - they're usually pretty decent too.

Cagcast (Cheap Ass Gamer) is another one I listen to regularly. It's a three person crew - CheapyD, Wombat and Shipwreck. Their best stuff is usually at the start of the show when they talk about what's been going on in their lives. Its ususually pretty humorous. CheapyD is basically Howard Stern so expect crass. Wombat has an annoying personality who I hated at first but kinda grew to like now that I've gotten used to him. Shipwreck is the most even keel of the bunch and is a hardcore gamer but down to earth. When they added Shipwreck it really helped with the chemestry. They're all console gamers so all the games they discuss are those but they also discuss sales numbers which is usually pretty interesting to hear. They had one of their best shows recently #240 so check that one out to start with.

I put a number of hours in to it on Gametap. It's a solid on asphalt racer that had steller graphics at the time and still decent today. Its made by the same guys that did Dirt 2 so it will have the similar slick interface to it.

There's two people in the office that do this same thing regularly. However they don't bother saying "x company is doing this deal". They basically just tell the retention people the bill is too high and ask what can be done to lower it. The retention people find them a deal going on and move them over to that. Then in another 6 months when their bill goes up they do it again.

I've always been tempted to do it but it sounds too troublesome to go through that process every few months.

Finished with 16 tickets. Was trying to get the Sanctum one but after 3hrs of playing only made it to the 3rd level - just too many waves to go through in that game.

So my haul for this year is:

X-SuperBox ($10) - Probably won't touch it for years
Dead Space 2 ($15) - Have it on the Xbox but will want to play it again with headphones
Mass Effect Pack ($20) - Don't have either of the games on PC. Why not?
Sanctum ($4) - Not as fun as I was hoping
Atom Zombie Smasher ($3) - To me just an ok game but good enough for $3
STALKER Clear Sky ($2.50) - Completes my Stalker collection (but when will I find time to play them???)
Fable 3 + DLC ($35) - Been playing the hell out of this. Not sure why it got such poor reviews. Having a lot of fun with it
Super Meat Boy ($7.50) - Purchased based on all the postive reviews. Only played a bit of it so far.
Star Wars Force Unleashed II ($10) - It doesn't have that insane install size like the original. Figure its gotta be $10 worth of fun
Spectromancer + League of Heroes + Truth and Beauty ($5) - Didn't have either of the expansions. Forgot how fun this game was.
Lead and Gold ($1.50) - First games I played one guy kept constantly nerd raging that people shouldn't choose the sniper if they can't shoot. Tongue
Medal of Honor($10) - Will play it eventually
Bit Trip Beat - ($2) - ok I got it for the ticket...I'm weak
Back to the Future ($12.50) - Will get to this as soon as I finish Sam & Max...and Monkey Island....maybe.

Total tally $138...holy crap!

Edit: Oh don't feel so bad after seeing CeeKay's haul.

Minor Outbreak: Rec or Quarantine - Quarantine is the US remake which I actually liked slightly better

Other end of the world reccomendations: Invasion of the Body Snatchers  '78 and Carriers

8 tickets so far. Been trying to do the ones for the games I already own. Most entertaining achievement for me was the Defense Grid one where you can't use cannons/guns for any of the maps. It made me try new tactics out and found a good one with using multiple tesla coils - fun. Also neat was for Lead & Gold where someone set up a server just for that achievement - so got that one completed in a few minutes.

Will have to try the L4D2 one tonight. Haven't played that game in awhile so will be fun to go back.

Anyone tried Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 on the PC? For $10 it's perked my interest but it sounds like it may have had (has?) technical issues. Also I know the original was like a 20 gig download due to inlcuding all the languages in it or something like that. Anyone know if the same deal for 2?

Only other game I'm looking at today is Dwarfs!? for $5.

And Black Ops needs to be way cheaper than $40.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 ($10)
Lead and Gold ($1.50) - always wanted to check it out

Metal of Honor - ($10.00) - why not?

And a maybe to Bit Trip Runner ($2.50) - which is another one I wanted to check out but kinda doubt I'd play it much.

Great price on Witcher 2 which is totally worth it at $34

I remember having to play the game in a postage stamp size window to get it to play well. I said screw that and went out and got a Voodoo card. What a difference. Full screen and running smooth. That piece of hardware gave my computer a whole new life. I loved multiplayer back then too as I had @Home as an ISP (cable). In Quake multiplayer my pings were in the 40s while most everyone else was 200+ with the 56k modems. The insanely low pings made me quite a menance. Multiplayer mods like Team Fortress and Jail Break were so fun and gave so much extra life to Quake. Good times.

Also have a One and found it easier to use than an 880.

You did mention you had kids. Any concerns about them dropping the remote? If so you might want to look at the more inexpensive Harmony remotes. I think most of them have the ability to use the Harmony software. You just DL the software, tell it what hardware you have and it will install the macros for controlling all the devices. I think I had to do some tweaking with some of the timing of turning devices on/off  but once you have that done you're set.

Only bright side to it is that its gotten me to go back to the original Witcher and finish that. I did notice you could import a Witcher 1 save to Witcher 2. What does that get you?
