441  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Help me buy a GPS on: March 19, 2009, 09:49:03 PM
I have a garmin unit in my car and love it to death.  You can find a unit in the Nuvi line for whatever budget you are working with... mine has the stadard GPS fare, traffic, bluetooth (which in reality the call quality is crap so I never use it), and an MP3 player which I do use all the time and is quite nice.  I think I paid around $300 for it but you can give up some features and get one for around $150 I think. They also have a new line with 3D building view features and stuff. Garmin has always been the king of GPS, so I would recommend sticking with them for your automobile unit.

Scratch the above... I'm going to go the hauler and trading route to support mining missions and transport goods between stations.  Perhaps I can also act as a gateway for us selling our excess materials to other stations to maximize our income potential.
444  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [EVE] The Trendy Squid Trading Corporation - Mining op on: March 19, 2009, 01:58:43 PM
Ok, well I will probably start up a miner then and work my way towards the big mining barges.  Mybe train up to a cruiser on the side for running missions too.

So I've been reading these threads for about a week now sitting on the fence on whether to join up or not.  After reading the latest on mining and production this morning, I decided it's time to get off the fence and join!  So answer me this... what would you consider most needed by the corp right now? I used to play a long time ago and most aspects of the game are interesting to me so I would find most enjoyment by being useful to the corp filling a needed role.

Wait, they're called cheesesteaks, but you're not supposed to get them with cheese on them?

Wiz = cheeze whiz.  This is what authentic cheesesteak sandwiches use.
456  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Good time to buy a house now? Need opinions please!! on: January 30, 2009, 07:55:48 PM
Houses are real cheap right now, so it's definitely a good time to buy if you can get financing (it's MUCH harder than it used to be).  One thing to check though... make sure you can actually rent your place and make enough to cover the mortgage.  My friend had a house built recently, has yet to be able to sell his old condo, and it took several months just to get someone in to rent the place for a large loss.
457  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Pet Allergy Tests? on: January 29, 2009, 03:44:18 PM
So my wife and I are thinking about getting a dog.  The problem is we need to find out ahead of time if she is allergic to them (she's allergic to cats, and sometimes she gets stuffed up when visiting my parents, but it's hard to tell the cause).  Is there a way of finding out if she's allergic other than just exposing her to a dog for awhile and seeing what happens?  Maybe a blood test?

Sorry, but Mira is anorexic as hell. Elbows too pointy?  Try everything too pointy! If she ate a couple sandwiches she might be hot.
459  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: LOTORO Volume 2: Mines of Moria (paid, full-box expansion) on: January 27, 2009, 08:32:33 PM
Another week and still going strong.  The more I play, the more I appreciate the differences in userbases.  My playing style in MMOs has always been very much solo; I might join an instance group from time to time, but even then it was when I specifically knew someone in the group (completely random PUGs were never something I wanted to do).

I have now grouped countless times with random people and have yet to meet a single asshat.  Everyone is very courteous and enjoyable to play with and even OOC chat is generally fine (I can only think of maybe two times when people were being jagoffs on OOC chat).  I've even managed to make some in-game friends, joined a great kinship (guild) and am having a fantastic time.  My playtime now seems to be 50/50 between solo and group questing.

The story/lore is also still going very strong.  I've never played an MMO with such a strong and cohesive story element between zones.  Every quest from the large multi-step chains to the smallest fetch/fed-ex quest fits into the larger story flawlessly.

Currently my champion is up to level 29, questing in North Downs, have the money for my 35 mount in the bank and am saving for one of the nicer houses.

The wife and I spent most of the time making fun of Mira Sorvino's acting (here's a new drinking game: do a shot every time she flips her hair).  The rather rediculous opening put us on alert and it didn't really do much to improve over time. I suppose we'll finish it as we did have a good time making fun of it, but I'm not expecting to change my mind that it's basically crap.

I don't know... it just doesn't look that impressive to me, but I couldn't really say why. Maybe it's just too busy and doesn't look like it will work well for groups.

Well, I've been playing for a little over a week now and have to say I'm completely in love with this game!! The storyline and the locations are what really hit this one home for me; everything is exactly where it should be geographically and the look is just perfect.  I played a few different characters and settled on a level 18 Champion on the roleplaying server.  I'm not sure how many characters I will level up, but I'm going to at least take this one up to 60 and enjoy the ride.  I find myself not much caring about levels right now... I'm just enjoying doing all the quests and deeds that are available.

Of note, I've never played an MMO with a more mature playerbase than this one.  Never a problem finding help with quests or people being asses.  It's a nice change.

I had played LOTRO when it first came out and ended up not playing after a week or so.  It just wasn't clicking with me at the time.  This weekend however, I signed up again and started playing.  Having an absolute BLAST this time around!  Maybe it's changes in the game, maybe I picked a better character type (lvl 13 Champion) but it is definitely resonating with me now.  The player base also seems much nicer.  Look up Alaros on Elendilmir.

I'm the same as Teggy.  On my back I sometimes wake myself up I snore so bad.  On my side nothing.  Thankfully, I always slept on my side anyway, so on the rare occations where I end up on my back, the wife just kicks me and tells me to roll over.
473  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: How did you choose your Gamertag or Forum name? on: December 30, 2008, 08:54:43 PM
I've had this name since I've been on the Internet.  It's the last name of Thomas Covenant from the Chronicles books.  Back in the GG days there was another person with the name ThomasCovenant; that wasn't me.

Thanks to a heavy snow storm this weekend, I got some serious gaming time in and finished Assasin's Creed, as well as starting and completing Crackdown.  Crackdown was pretty fun, but pretty short too.  I found once I got my athletic ability up to a decent level, you can easily skip to the end of all the generals.

476  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Drinking habits and me on: December 18, 2008, 06:28:02 PM
Well, think of it this way.  You say that having a hangover once a week is negatively impacting your life.  So just stop drinking so much that day.  Catch a good buzz on and stop there, or pace yourself differently.  If you honestly don't have enough control over your behavior to be able to do that, then you probably need to get help.  Unless the negative impacts of the hangover really aren't that big a deal.  If they aren't then who cares?

478  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Is it Unreasonable to Fear for Obama's Safety? on: December 17, 2008, 02:39:47 PM
During the election, my wife was walking outside to get the mail and someone actually slowed the car, rolled down the window and yelled the N word out at her.  This is something that had never happened to her before, and we are both old enough to have lived through times where odd/angry looks were fairly common (we are an interracial couple who have known eachother for a good 15 years or so).  These days, we get more comments on how nice we look together rather than anger.

She didn't really seem to mind it (she's not much the type to let some idiot get under her skin), as she chalks it up to people being ignorant, but she had something very interesting to say about why it happened.  She said that with the election going on, people's deep seeded fears and prejudices were more likely to bubble to the surface.  Whether we see it or not, racism is still out there quite a bit; people just hide it better as it's not socially acceptable anymore. When people start to freak out that we might get a black president, they will lose their minds so to speak and say things they normally wouldn't. I was talking politics with my brother at the time (a staunch republican) and he even crossed the line with me and I nearly hung up on him.

Now that the election is over, it's a question of whether people will bury those feelings again or not.  I think they will, as I honestly think as a whole this country is getting much better with each passing generation and nothing is going to stop that.  Some might fight it and there is still a ways to go, but it's a losing battle. This is certainly an interesting time in our lives.

Well, thanks to becoming newly married, bought a house, and bough two new/used cars within the last few months, I find myself on a much tighter budget than I am used to.  One effect has been on my gaming habit.  I've always been very ADD when it comes to games, hopping to whatever happens to interest me that week/day.  It also promotes a HUGE backlog.  Thanks to not having as much money to throw around towards games lately, I have actually gone back and started finishing some stuff in my collection.  When I finish a few titles, I sell them to GameStop and pick up 2 or 3 used titles. I have to say, I'm getting much more enjoyment out of games than i have felt in a very long time.  I'm enjoying the stories and doing more in each title, trying to really get my money's worth.

What I've finished lately:
1) Tomb Raider: Legend
2) Tomb Raider: Anniversary
3) Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
4) Fallout 3 (main storyline, going to go back and do more side-quests sometime)

Currently Playing:
Assassin's Creed

Next Up:
Crackdown or Rainbow Six: Vegas 2

So, in the spirit of my new found dicipline, what have you all finished up lately and what are your own gaming ADD stories?
