Did you  play past the first hour or so?  The beginning of the game is heavily scripted and full of QTEs meant just to get you into the story.  Once you land on the island and make your way to the first campfire, it opens up and gameplay changes significantly.

This is definitely a huge departure from the older Tomb Raider games (so you still might not like it), but don't let the first bit color your judgement of the title; it's really not representative of it.

Makes you wonder why everything is so buggy then, even beyond the regional features.  Also, knowing what sort of bugs they have fixed so far without touching the client would give clues as to whether this is true.

I'm hoping they realese some DLC of huge tombs to explore (a la Underworld).  It's the only thing I'm missing in this title.

The only confirmed bad guys in the movie are Electro and Rhino.  Everything else is just rumor and speculation. I'm betting they setup Green Goblin at the end for Spidey 3.

I thought the scene was designed to show Rick is finally coming back to sanity and rejoining the group.  Wasn't this the first tiem he's actually held the baby without looking like he's going to drop kick it?  There were a few other clues peppered throughout the episode as well... the heartfelt "be careful out there" he gives Andrea when she leaves, and the really quick glance of a white dress in the forest when he's standing guard which he doesn't go running after like a fool.

I think we've seen the last of captain insano.

Anyone else playing this?  It's currently in beta, but if you buy it you get instant access.

Gameplay is sort of a combination terrarria/roguelike where you run around collecting stuff, crafting items, and trying to stay alive, but once you die, the game is over.  I really dig the concept of learning how to survive little by little, figuring out how to feed yourself, how to survive the evenings, how to build up a base.  The game is extremely stable already, and the developers are adding updates at a failry decent clip. And these are real updates adding all new systems and things to do.

It's only $12 on Steam right now, and you get an extra copy to give away with your purchase, so try it out!

If they cozy up to online retailers, they can circumvent Gamestop altogether. Brick and Mortar game stores are  a dying model.  It will only get exacerbated. Perhaps not in the very next gen but by PS5 and XboxNEXTNEXT I bet GS is largely removed from the equation.

Agree completely.  Physical media and Gamestop are going away, but it's not happening this year.

Edit: ATB!!
51  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: New Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray and new kinect(EDGE) on: February 06, 2013, 02:44:57 PM
The best argument I have heard against all the "no used games next gen" rumors is that MS/Sony really can't afford to piss off Gamespot to that extent as they are the largest retailer of their software/hardware.  We aren't losing physical media in the next generation and the majority of sales will continue to come from physical media.  The numbers will certainly shrink over time, but we aren't there yet.  I would say the all digital/no used steam model is more likely going to happen in the gen after next (so 5 years down the road or so?)

I would also say the always online requirement isn't likely, as it immediately restricts your customer base.

Perhaps there are things they are putting in place at a hardware level so that they could turn something like this on in the future (spawning the rumors), but i really don't see that big of a change to the retail market happening this year.

59  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The 201X Health Improvement Thread on: January 24, 2013, 02:00:30 PM
I havn't had any real reason to post in this thread the last couple years because frankly I've let myself go quite a bit.  Weight steadily creeping up, blood pressure rising, getting flabby, feeling tired all the time.  I usually carry a gym membership, so I would get back from time to time, but peter out within a couple weeks and just lose my motivation.  Last November I went to the doctor's for a checkup and when getting weighed, I found I had hit 190 lbs.  Many might say that's not too horrible, but I have always told myself I would never let myself hit 200, and it was too close to the mark to ignore any more.  The doc also told me I had to lose 15 lbs if I wanted to get off my blood pressure meds.

Immediately after my appt. I went across the street and signed up at the gym again.  It's a Planet Fitness, and part of the membership is free classes with the on staff trainer. I met with him, told him what my goals were and he told me to just show up every day for class and he would take care of the rest.  One important note, this guy is an MMA fighter and really knows what he is doing, and even though planet fitness is mostly machines, they have a good enough set of free weights that we never touch them in our workouts. My daily routine is now to go to class, then hit the elliptical for a bit afterwords.  I also fixed my diet to a degree; rather than counting calories and all that, I just stay away from anything processed as much as possible.

So here we are, two months later and I havn't missed a day (other than christmas and new years).  The trainer has been kicking my ass on a steady basis (he gives me much more advanced stuff to do than the others in class) and I feel like a new man.  I'm down to about 175, the fat has dropped off of near everywhere but a small spare tire around the middle.  The flab is about gone and I am looking really cut and getting much stronger. Come summer, the spare tire should be gone and I'll be fully ripped.  I'm already full of energy again, and am hoping to get off the meds soon; I feel better than I have in years!

Given the amount of time, effort, and money I and others put into this place, posts like this just break my heart.  I really don't know what to do other than more - write more reviews, write more articles, write more news.  We've got big plans for 2013 and it's my hope that folks take a moment to see it.   Honestly, the forums baffle the hell out of me.  For instance, when we post up more videos than GameTrailers.com and then somebody comes in the next day and links to some other site rather than taking a second to look at the work we put in, it just stings.  When it happens nearly all of the time it just makes me completely confused.  I'd gladly take suggestions on how to make it better.

I think we have had that discussion not that long ago? As others have pointed out as well, others do what GT does, and unfortunately to my mind, better. If you are asking why, I do think it has to do with, as I also mentioned previously, to me the frontpage has no soul whatsoever. Its just a mashing of news articles that I can find anywhere on the net. Granted, most of the reason is just that I started viewing RPS a while ago, and that has just stuck. I find that they are quite good journalists whose writing I really like, but then again, I actually havent read a frontpage on GT in over a year.

As I also mentioned sometime ago in another post, GT has become another of the 7-10 score sites, where you pretty much never go below a 7 in reviewing a game, and thats a shame, since the scale is 1-10! I know last time you responded you thought you had a 60 something somewhere, but hey, thats not the point. The point is the scoring doesn't matter when you do it like this - its just noise without any meaningful disctinction. (EDIT: Ha, I just saw the two 60+ reviews on the frontpage now!)
As I also pointed out, I have no idea what GT stands for right now, if anything.  For lack of better words, to me the site's frontpage lacks personality, so I never go there.

Looking at the posting stats though, it doesnt look good. 2500 posts vs 5000 last years december? The forum activity IS declining.

I  would like to address this as I had actually had a very similar opinion of the site.  I would be in the habit of hitting the front page real quick, skimming and seeing just one or two announcements a day and jumping right to the forums.  I the last few weeks however, I have seen LOTS more content being posted.  We still have the standard announcements, but serveral new opinion pieces are showing up on a regular basis now. Even the announcement fluff sounds like there's more personality being written into them.  If this continues, I can see this easily turning into a site that I read rather than skim.

As for the forums, I wouldn't bother worrying about them really.  The front page is where the money is made and that's where the time and effort needs to be focused.  My only suggestion would be integration between the forums and the comment system.  Needing a separate account sucks, and having them tie together might draw more new people into the forums.

Finally, a personal note of appreciation for the extra work going into the site lately; I at least have noticed and am enjoying it. Keep it up guys!

All right, so what do people think of the depiction of race in the film? I'm not talking Spike Lee's obviously messed-up view, what do you think?

My only complaint was that Django didn't have much agency during the first half of the film.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Schultz taught him to fight, to shoot, to read, etc. It was like the "magical Negro" but in reverse. Sure, he was a "natural," but Django and most of the slaves only did anything at the beginning because a white man rode in. I'm not sure how comfortable I am with that.

Having said that, I absolutely loved it.

I actually prefer that to the "oh look, I magically know how to do all these things myself even though I've lived as a slave all my life!"  Anything else would have felt fake and Hollywoodized in my opinion.

I've come to the conclusion that I don't really enjoy playing the campaign solo, but co-op it is incredibly fun. Amazing how adding one more person can completely change how the game plays.
