That's unfortunate because this game is fantastic (Fallout 4 sits next to the console unplayed as we speak).  It put it's hooks into me over the weekend and hasn't let go yet.  I was a big fan of the original and this one improves on it in nearly every way (though I agree some of the mentioned story beats are pretty cliche).  I'm especially jazzed to be raiding actual tombs and ruins this time around.  There are lots of nice open outdoor areas, but the game play pushes you into a lot of great underground areas; still not up to the level of something like Underworld, but a definite improvement over the reboot).  Combat feels a lot more exciting, the quick time events are spaced out a bit more and aren't the big focus they were in the last release, and there's just a nice level of polish over the whole thing.
2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4, XB1, PC] Assassin's Creed Syndicate on: November 02, 2015, 02:07:23 PM
Syndicate is far far better than Unity. The time period is fantastic, having two protagonists is really interesting and well done, and no bugs that I have run across.

It was boring, and formulaic of past greater days. I'm not a fan of sequels, most of the time. Granted, there have
been some terrific sequels, but usually after 2 runs at it, they just keep milking the cow.

It is definetly not a thinking man's action movie.  It just felt like I was watching a Monty Python take on Mad Max.
Silly attempts at humor, ho-hum story line.

Theron was terrible in the movie, Prometheus. And the same wooden performance was given in this movie.
Caught up in the hype, let down by the Movie.

60% would be the most generous score I would give.

So basically trade in the original disc and buy Taken King... check smile thanks!

So how does this work if you still have a copy of the original game but none of the expansions?  Do you trade that in and pick up Taken King for $60 or is there a cheaper upgrade path?  Do you have to install the originally Destiny first before getting the new stuff?  Am I over complicating this?

The new patch is awesome.  Got my cube last night; not too difficult, but the new area is really nice.  The changes to adventure mode are also very welcome.  New difficulty levels up to torment X, streamlined rift system, streamlined crafting, etc.  Definitely some nice additions from what I'm seeing so far.

they are talking about adding seasons, but not changing the fact that the game is easily hackable locally.  Seasons will be dominated by hackers.

The quote makes it sound more like they would focus on the "starting a new character from scratch with no support" aspect rather than the leaderboards.  I think with the whole season journey system being added in, there's lots to love about seasons on the console.  Leaderboards? Not so much.  Maybe keep the leaderboards but add "friends only" boards as well or something?
9  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Diablo III --Impressions start on page 36 -- on: August 20, 2015, 04:45:56 PM
Like Hark, I prefer the console version (XBone)  as I think it actually plays better.  Plus these days I just can't sit at a computer and game anymore (and no I'm not hooking it into my home entertainment system).  The PC version has seasons though (which are nice), and secure online servers so you don't have to worry about randos with hacked characters.  I only play with friends though, so it's not a worry for me.

Oh, and yes it is definitely worth picking up!  It's a MUCH better game than it was at release, and the x-pack made it even better.  A new patch is coming out soon as well which adds a bunch of new features.
10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Diablo III --Impressions start on page 36 -- on: August 18, 2015, 03:34:57 PM
Heh... I've been playing a TON of this lately with a buddy of mine.  The nemesis system is absolutely fantastic.  Hearing that menacing horn and vibration; letting you know he is on his way.  Then clearing the area so you don't get overwhelmed.  My main takes him down without any issue at all now, but some of my lowbies have a real tough time of it.

The game in its current state is really night and day compared to when it released (remember that horrible auction house??)  I really have yet to encounter another game that scratches that loot itch the way Diablo can... Borderlands gets really close.
11  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Diablo III --Impressions start on page 36 -- on: August 18, 2015, 12:41:55 PM
Patch 2.3 also includes Season's Journey, a new interface to keep track of challenges related to your progress through the season.  I like the concept of season's quite a bit, but I'm too much in love with the console version to go back to PC.

Just a reminder to fans of Ready Player One... Ernest Cline's latest novel Armada is now available.  I had it pre-ordered so it's sitting on my Kindle right now, but I haven't had time to read any of it.  I'll try to get a few chapters in during the day and report back on how it is looking later.  Anyone else pick this up yet?

or the fact that you have to see the boss (and almost always die) before you can even level up the first time so you lose all that progress

Your first point of insight is what actually triggers the ability to level.  This is easily accomplished by discovering the first boss, but you can also find a couple "madman's knowledge" in the sewer and consume one of those to get it up and running.
15  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4] Bloodborne (previously known as Project Beast) on: March 31, 2015, 01:16:54 PM
Fantastic game, definitely up there with Dark Souls the first.  There's a real HP Lovecraft feel to the whole thing that not many people are mentioning; more "scary" than the previous titles.  I'm progressing slowly (approaching boss 3 now), but am enjoying the hell out of the time spent.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Working through the workshop area to open up the next cathedral area, I ran across an enemy who had mass tentacles coming out of his face and a giant tube on the top of his head.  He grabbed me, wrapped me up and proceeded to suck my brain out of my head with that big tube.  Lost an insight level on top of the death, but man did that encounter make me jump!  Add the whole "great ones" cosmic god concept being hinted at and this is very much a Lovecraft inspired world.

Yeah I've just finished getting through the opening bit (co-op unlocked) and am really enjoying this game.  As others have said, the parkour takes a bit to get used to, but soon enough it feels plenty natural.  My current hangup with the controls is that I keep throwing firecrackers when I mean to kick someone.  Combat at the start is real hectic; you definitely feel weak and a simple one on one fight can turn a corner real quick when zombie buddies decide to show up.  Once you get a decent weapon (blue electro-pipe ftw) and become more situationally aware though, it gets easier.  I can survive mini-packs without too much issue now.  Hot tip... don't ignore those firecrackers.  They are crazy useful at least in the early game.

Does this game have that great optional analog control scheme from Dead Island where you could control how you swing your weapons and target and break limbs on the zombies?

I seem to have met my match in Act V with Adria: The Witch (aka Spider-Woman). Any ideas? I've tried everything in my L54 Crusader toolbox, and seem wholly unable to bring her health meter below maybe 70%. Then the stupid heart slugs (or whatever) fill up the screen. If she has a weakness, I can't find it.

Nobody on bnet seems to join open multiplayer games anymore (presumably the only people left playing are L70 players now) so it doesn't seem like I can get any help on this that way.

I guess I'll Google it but thought I'd ask in case anyone here even remembers playing through Acts anymore.  icon_smile

I guess I knew sooner or later D3 would go back to pissing me off and frustrating me. Nothing like a love-hate relationship.  icon_neutral

Don't be afraid to lower the difficulty for a fight you are having trouble getting through.  I think i remember having to bump it down for that fight myself the first time through, then jacked it back up right after.  The Act V bosses are all long and tough.

Just did some searching and found the answer

"Dying Light features seamless drop-in/drop-out co-op for up to 4 players. The multiplayer is fully integrated with the campaign and allows the players to complete quests together, explore the quarantine zone, and take part in special co-op challenges."

Anyone know if the entire campaign can be played co op, or is it like Unity with only special missions available?

yeah the word is that driving is horrible first person.  You can supposedly set default camera settings for different modes (first person on foot, third person while driving, etc) so once you have a preference figured out, it's all automatic.

Like sometimes I want to go through a window but instead I'll either hang on to the side of the window, or if there's a balcony I'll land on the balcony's railing. Then I do a little dance grabbing the side of the window and hopping to the railing for awhile a few times before making it through the window.

Many people seem to be missing this (the pop up for it went away pretty quick), but to go through a window, you position yourself near it then pull the left trigger.  MUCH easier than trying to aim yourself through it.

So why is it that you can go out and buy/download a copy of this right now and play, and yet reviews can't be posted until noon EST?  Why on earth would a review site agree to this?

This is actually the first Call of Duty game that I can say I am enjoying.  Most years that I have bothered trying it out, I lose interest/get frustrated after a day or two tops.  hearing about the new mobility options (which I enjoyed in Destiny) got me to pick it up again this year and I am absolutely loving it.  I'm definitely not a very good player, but the gun-play and movement is fun enough that I don't really care.

How "punishing"/hardcore is it compared to the original game?

If you were a fan of Demon's Souls/Dark Souls then you will love this one.  If you didn't like them or thought they were too hard, this one will not change your opinion.  Having to learn new tactics to deal with enemies might make it feel tougher at first, but you quickly get over that.  One of the classes can take a decent amount of punishment before dying too which makes it a good toon to start with.
33  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/PS3] Dark Souls II on: March 13, 2014, 03:22:34 PM
Picked it up on Tuesday and am completely, totally in love. After a solid 5 hours or so of play, here are my random mini impressions:

1) The world is incredible.  The feel of everything is very Dark Souls but nothing looks rehashed so far.  I'm spending lots of time just poking around every corner trying to find shortcuts/loot/etc.
2) Combat is a bit different now as far as timing and animations.  The controls are all the same so it will be familiar to past fans, but you will be relearning how to deal with enemies.
3) When you die now, you lose a small bit of your max health (it can eventually get as low as 50% of your original HP).  You also become more and more "hollowed" as this occurs.  You need to use a certain object to restore your humanity and return to 100% health.  Not sure how I feel about this mechanic yet.  As the items are not super common to find, and are expensive to buy, there's a definite risk/reward thing going on. i will say it's not as bad as I originally thought it would be when reading about it.  I also suspect that when you get further into the game, buying these items will become much less of a hassle.  It also is a small slice of health per death, so if you are careful and don't die too much, it won't be a huge consideration very often.
3) The story looks good so far.  It does a great job of integrating lots of these mechanics into the lore but has that same Dark Souls ambiguity about it.  You'll be piecing together what's going on from lots of different sources just like you did before.
4) The menu system is worlds better this time around.  Much easier to get around and compare things.  There are also nice tool tips and indicators to let you know what things do and what they affect.
5) The starting area seems to ease you into game play better than the asylum did, and they don't throw a boss at you so quickly either.  There are a few uber tough enemies hidden away so you can try your luck against those, but it's all optional.
6) I haven't met my first boss yet, so can't say how those will work out.  I'm a pokey player, so don't assume it will take you the same +5 hours to get to the first boss.
7) Fast travel FTW!!!  You can now fast travel between bonfires immediately upon activating them.

In summary, this is DEFINITELY a Dark Souls game.  There's enough differences in here so it feels like a true sequel, but it's not a different type of game.  Best thing I can say is that it feels like playing Dark Souls for the first time all over again. If you are a fan, this is a MUST BUY.  10/10

It was garbage (and I'm a fairly forgiving viewer).  Pacing was bad, the action lacked any tension or excitement, writing stunk.  There were a couple enjoyable scenes throughout, and some of the concepts they were trying to address were interesting (focused on the humanizing aspect more), but it was just too poorly executed to pay off.  Dull
