Great shots Simon. I particularly like the fourth one. What a perfect time of year for that shot. Which one is your favorite and when is the next challenge?

82  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Panic! SATA devices. on: November 07, 2004, 08:37:06 PM
Haha, I win.

My motherboard has two SATA connectors and two SATA raid connectors. Apparently I can disable the raid in the bios and use those two as regular SATA connections for a total of four. smile

The only question that remains is whether or not I'll be able to boot from an SATA optical drive. I'll find out shortly. Soon as I find the nerve.

83  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Panic! SATA devices. on: November 07, 2004, 06:18:00 AM
Thanks gentlemen. I'll probably have to get a controller card. Too late to switch motherboards.

I've spent the last couple of hours in the anandtech forums reading up SATA. What a mess I've gotten myself into. If I had known then, what I know now, I would have skipped SATA altogether. The cables are nice though.

Everything was going so smoothly too.  smile

84  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Panic! SATA devices. on: November 07, 2004, 02:11:45 AM
I was just putting my new system together and ran across a problem. I bought all SATA (never used it before) equipment: Motherboard, DVD, Harddrives X2. It wasn't until I was to the point of connecting all the cables that I realized there aren't any cables with more than one connector on it. I have three devices and there are only two SATA connectors on the motherboard.

After one of those 'oh shit' moments, I did a quick google for SATA cables and didn't see any that had more that one connector. Did I goof? Does my motherboard only support two SATA devices?

85  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 Impressions on: October 29, 2004, 05:31:37 AM
I've spent a few hours with it and I'll give you my quick impressions.

In a nutshell, it seems like more of everything. More rides, more details and more options. Besides all that, it seems to play very similar to the first one (I've only played one and I don't remember which it was).

The graphics are great. The 3D is nice, the people models are superb as are the rides, but I'm not sure that it adds much to the gameplay. It's still very much a tile laying game. It's great for the camera though. You can move the camera anywhere and the ride cam is pretty cool. I didn't think much of the coaster cam until I tried it and it's pretty neat. It works on any ride, even the merry-go-round.

The detail is what gets me excited though. For instance, the burger stand. You can sell a basic burger and set it's price. You also have a choice of condiments you can put on the burger, like cheese, pickles, and ketchup. You can build different burgers (with cheese, with pickles, with cheese and pickles, etc) and charge different amounts for each entry. You can also adjust how much of each condiment get put on each burger. The peeps like lots of cheese on their cheese burgers! That's the same for all the "stall" items. So far I've seen ice cream, milk shakes, coffee, soda, fruit juice, hot chocolate, and water. All of those can be customized with extras. The game is full of details in everything else too. You can even customize your workers uniforms.

The campaign mode seems familiar. I'm only on the first map though. I've had to restart once after getting familiar with the interface and all and I'm afraid I'll have to dump my current game as I'm down to about $250 and am losing money. I'm not sure if I can tweak my park enough to turn a profit. I'll have to be more careful of that next time. Maybe only one slice of cheese on the cheese burgers. smile

Something I read in the manual that sounds kinda neat, but I've yet to try it, is pictures. Apparently you can allow the peeps to take pictures on their own and the pictures are saved to your hard drive. That sounds kinda neat.

As for a negative... If I ever find that little punk that broke all my benches... I'll bury him in a tomb beneath the cupid fountain.

Anyways, there are my first impressions. I like it so far. Oh, I'm running it on a P4 1.8, 512 ram, Geforce 4400, and it's nice and smooth at the default settings, what ever those are.

Yesterday we revealed some exciting features coming soon to beta designed to help you individualize your EverQuest II character. These advancement paths include: character traits, enemy tactics, racial traditions, specialized training, and all-new spells and arts unique to each class. Together, these options will help you to make your character unique as you travel through the world of Norrath.

Today we'll provide more detail on traits and explain how they help you individualize your character.

Do these seem kinda of underwhelming to anyone else? By level 22 you get a stat enchanement, a resist bonus, and a bonus to health/power/mana. Does not seem very robust. Maybe the higher level ones and racial ones will be cooler.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I can't think of anything better, but I don't see those as much of a choice. Is a warrior going to pick an intelligence boost? Is a rogue going to pick something other than agility? I doubt many roleplayers even would choose something other than the obvious choice. I also hope the racial traits add something a bit more interesting.

The racial enemies list though sounds good. Not just a boost, but it sounds like an involved quest/story line to go along with it.

I wouldn't buy it, but then I'm not too interested in it anyways, so it's pretty easy to say that. My boycott of Starforced games is 100% though, doesn't matter what the game is. Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion could come out with Starforce on it and I still wouldn't buy it.

93  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Feel like every other EQ2 joe schmo??? Listen to Moorgard.. on: October 20, 2004, 03:30:11 AM
Just when I thought my opinion of EQ2 couldn't go any lower, they go and do this.

And totally redeem themselves! smile

Seriously though. That sounds pretty neat. I hope that the folks that are in the beta or follow it close enough will post some of those traits lists.

I was like you until a few months ago. The only the only things I did were:

1. Turn off the built in messenger. I gather that people can force the messenger to pop up with spam.

2. Turn off the built in firewall. I had already been using the freebie Zone Alarm so I kept using that.

3. I either turned off auto updates, or it came that way by default, I don't recall.

I also run NTFS on all my partitions, but then I don't know enough about it to know why I wouldn't. smile

Does anybody have any tactical tips on how to deal with chariots?

The Egyptions declared war on me, and although I have been winning my battles with them, their chariots are like meat grinders.  Whatever I throw at them takes heavy losses, I think to their wheel scythes.

I can beat them, but not without heavy casualties, which makes fighting the next giant battle harder, until my campaign grinds to a halt due to lack of manpower...

I got ripped to shreds too the first time I went against Egypt. After a few losses, I decided to abort attacking Egypt by land and began attacking only coastal cities from ships. I don't think the chariots are as effective in tight quarters defending cities as they are fighting in the wide open deserts where they have to room to roam. You can put a serious hurt on Egypt by taking coastal cities (at least with the territories they held in my game) and then take cities that are less than a turns travel from those. The point being to not get into a fight in the desert.

The best part of EQ for me was the world, and it's something that hasn't been matched since. There were zones for your level scattered throughout the world and of course things like the famed trip from Qeynos to Freeport by way of Highpass is the stuff of great memories.

This is so true. Highpass or that gorge with the minotaurs and giant eyeballs? Pick your poison. What great adventures were had on that trek!

Quote from: "Animus"

EDIT: I know there are a lot in favor of instant travel (I've heard plenty of complaints even on the Wanderers boards about the griffon rides, which blows my mind) but I have to say it also drives me nuts that the boat travel is instant. PoP books pissed me off a lot too but it made some sense considering most of us had travelled the world back and forth countless times. But the whole fishing on the docks while waiting for the boat, getting drunk while on board and falling into the water thing is another set of fond memories that SOE apparently think will just bother people. Bleh.

Quick travel is my number one pet peeve in MMORPG's. Like you, I liked waiting for boats. Fishing off the docks, chatting up/ roleplaying with others, whatever. It made the journey seem like a journey.

It seems like most people like instant travel though. So I wonder, why even bother traveling at all? Why not just have a pull down menu and select your destination from a list. Lets not stop there either, lets have a pull down menu to select our level too, since gaining experience is just a dreadful chore to get out of the way as soon as possible. Let us have menus to select our equipment too since we're trimming the fat. Then we could all stand around at the bank and say "I'm level 50, look at my stuff." What would the Lord of the Rings be if Frodo could have just selected Mordor from a list!?

It's the journey, not the destination!

102  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / RTW: Factions and Units. on: October 14, 2004, 08:25:23 PM
Scipii get Arcani as well. I think it's the market line of buildings that builds them. Speaking of them, has anyone made much use of them? I built four of them and sent them out alone to try ambushing with them. Never was able to, and one problem I had was that the group that contained the captain wasn't able to hide anywhere like the rest could, so they were still restricted to hiding in a forest. They did seem ok as morale breakers as part of a conventional army but I didn't use them enough to really test them.

103  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / RTW: Factions and Units. on: October 14, 2004, 07:17:36 PM
Do each of the Roman families get a unique unit? As the Scipii, I was able to build a couple of navy units (their names escape me right now) that I never saw any one else use and required a temple to Neptune to build. Am I correct that each Roman family has a unique line of temples and therefore a unique unit or two?

Finally. I conquered the world with the House of Scipii in the year 133 BC. The long campaign is just that - long. It's been what, almost two weeks? And I just finished my first game.

It was fun, but at the default settings, it was a little easy. I look forward to trying again though with a short campaign at a higher difficulty with one of the non roman factions.

I don't know. Have you looked around here much? It looks like a lot of Gone Golders are going to give this place a shot. They've added alot for PC games already and might do more.

I mean, in the PC games forum, Hetz is already gushing over his latest greatest game and CSL has started his next greatest game of all time tourney. In the Road to Gold, someone spoofed DNF GONE GOLD!!! Hardware and Software help in the same forum now! I don't know. I'm going to give this place a shot. I hope alot of others do too. I'd hate to lose that collective of gaming knowledge.

Regarding the Culture Penalty. That's good info, thanks everyone.

It would be a logistical challenge but I wonder if it would be worth it to bring a stack of peasants from home along with your distant armies to disband into a newly conquered foreign city.

By the way, is there any way to see who the populace of a city is culturally attatched to?

119  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / EVERYONE READ PLEASE on: October 12, 2004, 06:06:46 AM
1.) What do you want out of Console Gold? What can we do to faciliate you? (within reason)

Forums are all I need. And the plebes to populate them. Everything I needed to support my game hobby I found in the Gone Gold forums. If you add those (and it looks like you already have), then I'm golden.

3.) Can I count on your support with the ads? I don't have a lot but they support the site.

If you mean clicking on ads, sure. I can't promise to buy my games through them though.

If we invest a ton of time, will everyone up and leave?

That's a good question. Friendly, mature gaming forums are what I'm after. That's what Gone Gold gave me. But forums aren't worth anything without the people. If the PC forums here fail for whatever reason, there will be nothing to keep me here. No matter how nice you guys are. smile I guess if I were you, I wouldn't invest much into the PC side for awhile and see how it goes with just the forums. On the other hand, maybe some front page content or other PC content might help keep the forums going. Tough decision, but then I know Jack about running a website.

So. PC Games, Hardware, Multiplayer, and a Weekly Deals forums for sure for me. R&P seemed more like a dick slapping contest than anything else. I suppose it was fun to watch the Conservatives end up in the little dick corner after getting whooped by the Liberals everytime, but I could live without that. There's no shortage of places for that around the net.

Now, if you were to add front page PC news, reviews and that kind of stuff, that would all be gravy. I'd certainly get use out of that, and I'd enjoy that, but I could get by with just Gone Goldesque forums.

Thanks again for being so gracious Console Gold.

120  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Anyone else having problems with Gone Gold? (Pt. 2) on: October 11, 2004, 12:20:00 AM

I'd like to say thanks to Knightshade Dragon and the other powers that be here for being so accommodating. Even reasonable folk might see this horde of homeless gamers camping on their yard and be a little defensive about it. Not you guys though. You guys here at Console Gold have been gracious hosts at the least.

All that said though, I don't want to relocate. I want to go back home. Gone Gold was my only source for game news, reviews and general info for a couple of years now.

If Gone Gold is gone though, and you all open up PC game forums, I'll probably have to stick around.

Here's to the future.
