After a terrific weekend, City of Steam’s 4th and final Alpha test has officially come to a close. Our thanks go out to all players who flooded in The Refuge last week; without your support, we couldn't have tested the game out as thoroughly. Also, we've piled up tons of player input since the test started, and will be looking into them shortly. Be sure to keep an eye on our website and dev journals to keep up-to-date with Beta news and development!!

Now we are heading for the fourth (also the last) Alpha Weekend starting on August 17th, featuring even more content and all 9 playable races. If interested, do remember to sign up for our newsletter for alpha key priority and choose your preferred races on 17th.

Hello all, we've just wrapped up a grand Elven Elite weekend and are expecting to start off the third Alpha Weekend with the addition of goblins. We look forward to seeing more players come in as we need to test out server capacity this time. If you haven't heard yet, this third test goes on live this Friday, August 3rd at 7pm (PDT, or 10pm EDT). More details can be found via the announcement on our website. Did I mention goblins? Goblins.

Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / City of Steam Alpha Preview Contest
|

Hello all, I'm Ethan at Mechanist Games, an indie game developer. We've been crafting our debut title, City of Steam, an industrial fantasy/steampunk themed browser MMORPG for a long time. Now we are approaching to an alpha launch in mid-July. (Thanks go to Knightshade Dragon, admin of Gaming Trend, who approved this thread). We're having an Early Preview Contest! Yep, the winner gets an exclusive personalized tour of City of Steam with us, the developer! You’ll get to see and play around the game before anyone else does (major bragging rights)! On top of this you’ll get to talk to us, and bring 2 friends! The rules are simple. Simply post a reply to this thread about why you think you should get a tour. This post should be well written and thought out (so a “plz u shud pick me lawl!” won’t quite work), but we don’t expect an essay out of it either, so the length should depend on how much you need to say rather than an arbitrary limit on our part. Quality, a good argument and relevance is what we’re looking for, so don’t feel the need to fluff it out just to make it look longer (not to mention we have a game to make, no time to read gargantuan posts!). Winners will be announced on July 6th, and the tour will be given on July 9th. Good luck, and we look forward to seeing the results! Want to learn more about City of Steam? Check out our website here. City of Steam Team

Ethan - sounds very cool. I'm loving the steampunk theme. Will check out your links when I get home. Best of luck!
Thank you. The industrial fantasy/steampunk setting is indeed one of the best parts of City of Steam,we are really excited that players love it. If you have any thoughts on this game, do drop by on our forum and tell us.

Looks interesting, but you might want to come up with a clearer pitch on how it stands out from other MMORPGs (outside of it being browser based).
Thanks for your interest. In the world of City of Steam, you can have personalized quest based on race/class combinations, weapon customization, rich and explorable stories and a visual style that is industrial fantasy/steampunk. Stay tuned for more updates and feel free to ask me more questions.

First off, I'd like to thank Knightshade Dragon, who approved this post.[/b] Hello all, I'm Ethan at Mechanist Games, an indie games developer. We are now creating our debut title, a browser-based steampunk-featured MMO under the name City of Steam. Luckily enough, we snatched a chance to show off City of Steam at GDC 2012 back in March. After a great reception, we'd really like to get the word out and get some recognition. If you are interested in the development progress of this game, do keep an eye on our regularly updated Dev Journals. A Little about the GameAlready years in development, City of Steam evokes an industrial age fantasy set in a mechanical world during an industrial revolution where the boundaries between science and magic have begun to blur, where humanoid steamtoilers partrol the streets and levianthan airships float just above the rooftops. City of Steam is set on the World Machine, a vast and ancient system of interlocking gears powered by unfathomable energies. Long ago, a race of ingenious conquerors called the Paragons sought to claim those energies for themselves, and destroyed themselves in the attempt. They left behind a shattered world and a complex legacy. Even now, millennia after the Era of Myth, that legacy continues to affect the course of history on the World Machine. To the races that already inhabited the mechanism - humans, goblins, orcs, and hobbes - they added the charismatic riven, insular draug, and half-mechanical dwarves. Life on the Mechanism has been revolutionized by the study of the Praragons' lost technologies. Airships soar overhead, robotic steamtoilers patrol the streets, and great factories produce weapons wielded by heroes and villains alike. Four great human nations have emerged since the fall of the Paragons: The confederated city-state of the Heartlands, the allied kingdoms of Ostenia, the patriarchal Republic of Avenoss, and the harsh Empire of Stoigmar. At the site of the Paragons' fall lay the City-State of Nexus, a once-great industrial center whose connection to the Era of Myth continues to attract attention from across the Mechanism. Rumor has it that something deep within Nexus has awakened - A secret that will change the world forever. Each of these scenes represents just a tiny once-off download for players because we've optimized our resources. The last one is a depiction of the mechanical world this game is based upon. Take a look at the Unity Project about the world on our website and look into its origins. Edit: City of Steam - POWER Steam (new video up)This is what results form stressed-out City of Steam devs trying to get CoS Beta ready, more coffee? Probably.... http://youtu.be/MsEwxqDL7eYClosed Beta Testing Date RevealedFinally and officially, we're aiming for having the Closed Beta Test in November. Back in July and August,2012, we had 4 alpha weekends for the game and received a positive response and tons of player feedback. In Beta, we'll bring you bunch of new features, content and designs (including a guild system, deeper storyline, etc). So if interested, do remember to stay tuned for more Beta updates lying ahead! Alpha Collaborator Packs Came to a CloseRegrettably but gratefully, we decided that it’s time to bid a farewell to the limited Alpha Collaborator Packs; they officially came to a close on September 23rd. Yes, you can still help us out afterwards through the merchandise store, Paypal donation, etc. We may be indie (and proud of it), but we’re very receptive to player feedback too, and strive to openly discuss the development process. Feel free to share your thoughts, and I’ll personally answer any questions you may have.
