1361  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / HALO 2 CLAN on: November 10, 2004, 06:39:08 PM
Well, you can only be a member of one clan... as much as I'd like to start one and get into the game now, I think it's better if we make an 'official' decision.  I want to play in whatever Console Gold clan we come up with, but I don't want to join one now and then find that half of my friends have jumped ship to play another clan  if/when Ron starts one up later.  Stick together, team!

But that's just me.  Any other opinions?  Does anyone else want to start up the Wanderers?
1362  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What's Wrong With You People??!?? on: November 09, 2004, 05:20:19 PM
I like to jump in offline and learn one or two maps and the controller setups before I go online, but that's it.  I'm not practicing headshots or anything, just where to go and what to do when I get there.
1363  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / HALO 2 CLAN on: November 09, 2004, 05:18:34 PM
What are we going to be named?  I know the old GG MMORPGers have 'The Wanderers', and it would be cool to have something with a little more zip than 'Console Gold' as the name.

Also, Gamertag is KeySJU, if someone gets around to creating and adding some names in.

1365  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Halo 2 - It's ON! (impressions thread) on: November 09, 2004, 03:02:26 PM
I guess I'm just lucky... the EB down the way had a few hundred show up, but the Gamestop right by the subway entrance, where I preordered, only had about 40, and I wes 8th in line.  Got my ass kicked in the tourney, and was out of the store by 12:15.
1366  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / HALO 2 CLAN on: November 09, 2004, 02:35:02 PM
Any movement on this?  I'm ready to go with it.
1367  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Halo 2 - It's ON! (impressions thread) on: November 09, 2004, 02:32:18 PM
Got it.  I agree that there are definitely LOD issues that take away from the cutscenes a little, but when I'm playing I don't notice them at all.  Multiplayer is A+ brilliant.   KeySJU on Live, look me up.
1368  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Halo 2 - It's ON! (impressions thread) on: November 08, 2004, 10:00:11 PM
Yeah, look me up for live, too.  Gamertag is KeySJU.  Take a look at the XBox tags list in the MP forum if you haven't already.

I think that one might have old MUD or MUCK heritage, too.
1370  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Halo 2 - It's ON! (impressions thread) on: November 08, 2004, 06:35:38 PM
In at midnight, and glad to be.  Preordered it this weekend at Gamestop.  Depending on roommate, TV, and Ethernet situations, might be on Live as early as 1:30.

*sigh*

Somehow I don't see the bunch around here sticking together enough for this.
The second I can create a clan I will be doing so and posting it here kids.  I should have the game before any of you so I should trump the whole 'everybody has a clan so we are all scattered' thing too. smile

You're the best.  Post here and tell us how to join when it's up?

Anyone have a copy of the .exe that they could email me? It would suck if, after I can't play any SOE game and had a flawless time with the WoW stress tests, I couldn't play because of a stupid freaking patch.

I don't know much bout this kinda stuff, but are you sure that's all it would take to get you into the patched game?  The patch is 19mb, the exe is 4mb.

I don't know.  The EXE was the only thing the torrent downloader was showing.  If I need more stuff, by all means, tell me where I can get it.

Edit:  Sorry, bit of confusion.  The Blizzard Downloader downloads an EXE: WoW-number-to-number-patch.EXE.  That's the 19.4 meg one I need.
1373  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / HALO 2 CLAN on: November 08, 2004, 01:10:26 AM
In.  In.  IN.

IN!  IN, damn you, IN!

Sorry, midnight tomorrow can't come soon enough.

Did I mention... in?

Anyway, I think a CG clan is a great idea.  Enough of the old GGers are around, and they're always great to play with (at least in UT), and the existing base of CG people is probably pretty good.  I don't think it would be competitive, but it would be great with the alleged Virtual Couch thing to just be able to jump into a running GG/CG game at any time.
1374  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / xbox to computer monitor? on: November 08, 2004, 12:52:32 AM
I was actually trying to get an S-Video cable for the XBox earlier today, but apparently in Queens it's well-nigh impossible.  EB was sold out, I didn't feel like standing in line for 10 more minutes at GameStop listening to some 8-year old cursing out his Spanish-speaking mother in English for getting him a Gamecube game instead of PS2, and in Best Buy they were completly unhelpful finding anything but the advanced A/V pack, which includes more stuff than I want and that I don't want to pay extra for.  Any recommendations on a reasonably-priced cable that I can walk into a place, ask for directly, pick up, and leave?
1375  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / WoW Patch Now!!! on: November 08, 2004, 12:42:53 AM
Um, this sucks.  BitTorrent is blocked at my university...  that means I can't download the patch, and thus, I can't play until I find an HTTP mirror?  The Blizzard readmes mention that their downloader tries an 'alternative download method', but I see no proof that it's doing anything besides failing.  Bastages.

Anyone have a copy of the .exe that they could email me?  It would suck if, after I can't play any SOE game and had a flawless time with the WoW stress tests, I couldn't play because of a stupid freaking patch.

First off, if it's hooked up through component cables and is blurry, you have some hardware/software issues you need to look into. I think what you're getting at is Composite video cables. Meaning the yellow video cable.

Component is actually the red, blue, and green cables, and is a step up from S-video.

To answer your question: If you're using the yellow video cable with the red and white sound cables, then yes, an S-video cable would be a step up.

Yep, that's it exactly.  I'm using the red, white, and yellow ones, and it's just ever so slightly blurry on my monitor.  It may be driver issues with the video card, but I doubt it (it's looked the same through many, many iterations of Catalyst drivers).
1378  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Going to buy an Xbox what do I need to buy? Advice please on: November 07, 2004, 10:29:25 PM
Memory card is useless.  I highly recommend a Live subscription and the headset, though; my understanding is that there's a Live starter kit with some really good play value in it now (I only got Tetris Worlds).  Halo 2 is going to be it for games over Live.  Otherwise, grab a few extra controllers if you expect friends over, and have fun!

I don't know of any keyboard combos out there; the controller is really what everyone uses, and it's about optimal for Halo.  The headset comes with Live, but here's a little secret; it's a standard cell-phone mono jack.  I use my Live headset on my cellphone when I'm in my dorm, and I imagine if you have a cell headset already, it works the other way too.
1379  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / xbox to computer monitor? on: November 07, 2004, 10:24:51 PM
I have an ATI All-In-Wonder video card, with  the XBox running to it through component cables.  It's a little blurrier than I'd like, which is slightly distracting in fast-reaction stuff like Burnout 3, but perfectly adequate for Halo.  I'm in a college TV situation, so the ATI card saves me a ton of space in the room and trouble when I travel back and forth.  Anyone who have one of these, can you tell me if the S-Video input is worth it for additional clarity?

This is a cause every gamer should be donating to.  It's nice when the media picks up on a story like this, rather than (for example) the Australian kids who apparently became murderers because of CS, and also maybe that devil music.  It's nice to get out the message that gamers, like everyone else, are by and large decent, generous people.

WoW may not be too impressive from the initial retail release, but you must consider how Blizzard supports its games.  They will be improving, expanding, adding content for years to come.  Plus think of all the cool events Blizzard will be hosting and all the hidden treasure/secrets to find.  The ideas are endless.

Blizzard has the plans and manpower to make WoW fresh for a long time.  This is what excites me the most.

That's what's keeping me, a general non-MMORPG player, interested in this one.  Blizzard seems like they have the infrastructure and the gameworld to toss some fun events and storyline in.  City of Heroes... eh.  I played for a while, hit the same wall that most everyone else seemed to, and now I'm waiting for another couple of content packs.  It's not so much the ability to add more content that I'm looking for in my next MMORPG, it's the ability to keep things interesting between big content dumps.  Not just 'play out what's there, yawn, ooh content dump, play out what's there now, yawn, etc.'

The Country will never be united as long as the Religious right is so fanatical..

Hmmm... Funny how tolerance - the mantra for those on the left -  seems to be a one way street.  The anti-religious demand it from Christians, but yet are only "tolerant" themselves towards ideas they agree with.  I've seen none so fanatical as those who blame the "religious right" for every ill.

Um, I fully agree with the right of fantatical x'ers (where X is your chosen religion/bias/cult) to home-school their kids, be insular about their beliefs, be biased against one group of people, whatever.  My tolerance hits its limit when they try to choose for me.  There's a difference between allowing people to do what they want in private, and telling them what they can or can't do in the public realm.

Of course, I describe myself as moderate... maybe I'm far more extremist than I thought?

I was going to have my main be an undead mage, but after playing a warlock up to level 11 in the new stress test, I'm thinking I might go that way instead.  I'm having a lot of fun with the curses and the pets, as opposed to just nuking whatever comes my way.

Dreamhost.  Had nothing but good service with them.  About $100-$120 a year for more bandwidth and disk space than most people need, with full PHP support (along with a bunch of other languages), multiple SQL databases (I run two wikis on mine), email, and full telnet/SSH support.

Um, yeah.  So you do what they explicitly tell you not to do, then you lie to get out of it... I'm thinking, you know, that it wasn't the smartest move because you lied about something that's easily checked up on, and now you're scrambling to fake documentation.

My advice is to forget about that job, and definitely not to list that job on your resume, lest any potential future employers find out that you disobey orders, then lie to your employers, and then try to fake your way out of it.  Honestly, a short jail stay for shoplifting would probably look better on a resume than getting that off a phone call to a former employer.

Does the updated Source version include the bots from CZ? Although they arn't a replacement for real people I think they could be a could be a descent trainer for someone to at least learn the maps and weapons before jumping into the online pool witht the pirahnas.

The pirahnas are what I'm worried about.  Frankly I suck and I don't know the maps.  And I don't believe the Source version has bots.  It's online only.

It will, (the commands are in the console, just disabled for now, and some required files are missing) but not yet.  I've heard that some folks got the CZ bots working in Source with some inspired hacking, but I've yet to see any evidence of this, and I'm certainly not risking putting any unauthorized hacks in my Steam directory.

It's probably a good idea to play through the 'easy' campaign of CZ first, just to acquaint yourself with the weapons and maps so you don't have to run around the map aimlessly for several rounds, but after that, I say just jump in.
