1321  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [NBA] Pacers/Pistons Brawl on: November 20, 2004, 08:42:02 PM
There's no excuse on the part of the players or the fans.  It's hardly comparable, but when I ran track, I had stuff thrown at me by fans of the host team.  You know what I did?  Found the manager of the meet, pointed them out AFTER my race was over, and as far as I know, they were suspended.  And imagine, me showing such restraint without making obscene amounts of money to ease my pain and indignation!

Sorry, but a professional shouldn't be rushing the stands no matter what's being thrown at them.  I don't have as much of an issue with decking a guy sucker-punching them, but if they're throwing beer, you wipe it off, change your jersey, and keep playing.  Playing sports isn't an excuse to act like a fuckwad, on the court or off.

As for the fans, I hope anyone who was caught throwing stuff on camera is indicted for assault, and anyone caught throwing a punch is indicted for battery.  Watching sports isn't a license to act like a fuckwad, in the arena or out.

Man i hope so. Mods would rock. I'd love to see a Natural Seletion or Day of Defeat redo in this engine.

You know Day of Defeat is getting the official Source treatment, right?
1323  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half Life 2: How to enable the console on: November 19, 2004, 01:20:39 PM
At least in CS:S, it was enabled through the Options menu.  Controls/Advanced/Enable Console.
1324  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines Impressions on: November 19, 2004, 02:07:56 AM
Suppose I'm interested in getting started with the pen-and-paper White Wolf books; is this game a good starting point so that I have an idea of what's going on?  I have a pretty good group for tabletop RPGs, and a few of us are interested in the World of Darkness stuff, but none of us really has a frame of reference.
1325  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half-Life 2 Impressions (Possible Spoilers) on: November 18, 2004, 08:53:41 PM
Wow... I just saw a screenshot and had a thought.

Go back a few years in your memory, to whatever the last screenshots you saw of TF2 were (God, when was that?  '98?  '99?  I'm getting old...).   Now, when you get far enough in the game, look at your squadmates.  The red cross on white armband... the rocket launcher guys... the ruined-city looking setting... looking familiar?

Conclusion, with the support of absolutely no evidence but a great gut feeling:  TF2 or TFC:S is coming after all, and it's set in City 17-style environments, with HL2-style characters.  The infrastructure is there, the physics are there... hell, imagine the Engineer class with HL2-style sentries, a gravity gun, and full-on demolition charges, in a modernized 2Forts, tossing explosive barrels back and forth between bases, snipers with those cool-looking blue beams, heavy gunners with a mobile Combine cannon, scouts (concussion grenades + ragdoll physics = fun), soldiers lobbing rockets back and forth...

I'm not even going to mention the other class I want to see, because I'd drool on the keyboard too much.  Mmm, HL-2 quality flames...
1326  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The HL2 OMG that was cool thread on: November 18, 2004, 08:43:57 PM
Going Wild West with the revolver and six Combine guards, then getting killed by number seven, eight, and nine.

Going up to a device I've never seen, hitting a switch, and suddenly seeing antlions pour out of the sand at me.

The crane.  Especially letting the Combine soldiers come out and start firing at me... picking up a 30 foot metal container and getting a good, heavy swing going before finally nailing them to a wall with it..  I don't think I've ever seen such a satisfyingly final death in a game before.

Sawblades.  Oh emm gee.

Anything with Striders in it.

That's about everything short of spoilers for me.  But there's a LOT of spoilers.
1327  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 Offline Mode -* First Post Edit *- on: November 16, 2004, 08:14:18 PM
It only accesses offline mode if you're actually offline.  Start Steam without a network connection, after having successfully logged in before, and it'll try to find one, then start in offline mode, where you can play anything you have all the local files for.
1328  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2: Upgrade Retail Version? on: November 16, 2004, 04:40:38 PM
The last I saw on the Steam forums was a hearty 'Good idea, maybe later'.  My advice would be to hold off on anything at least until DOD:S is out, there will probably be some word then.
1329  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 performance thread on: November 16, 2004, 04:34:12 PM
jonsauce, try the beta ATI Catalyst 4.12 drivers.  From what I heard from my friends who play CS, they're pretty much built ground-up to kick ass at the Source engine.
1330  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Robosapien Toy on: November 16, 2004, 04:17:53 PM
I saw that commercial last night.  When I saw it lift up that cup and turn it upside down, my first words to my roommate were, "Suicide robot.  Put it somewhere public, have it read a statement, and then upend a glass of water over itself.  Goodbye cruel human world..."
1331  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 performance thread on: November 16, 2004, 04:16:03 PM
P4 1.8 gigahertz
1 gig RAM
Radeon 9600 Pro AIW

I have it on High, 1024x768, and it runs mostly smooth, with ever so occasional of a stutter, not enough to bother me in the least.  I may turn down detail if things bog down too much, but considering I've had multiple explosions, vehicles, and characters onscreen at once in massively open areas while the engine is doing AI and physics calculations... if this game CAN throw any more at my computer, I'd love to see it.

1335  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half Life 2: Countdown to November 16 on: November 16, 2004, 01:11:54 AM
The Steam forums are, without a doubt, one of the padded rooms of the Internet.  I'm almost sad when they're down, because it means all the people who post there are now bouncing around the rest of the Internet.

Okay, after listening to the article and checking out the CONET Project (you can get the 4-CD set as MP3s off of, that's pretty freaking neat.  Unsettling to fall asleep to, though.

Okay, maybe not.  But you looked, didn't you?
1338  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Screw RX Med... on: November 16, 2004, 01:04:37 AM
Okay, I'm sick of this.  For the last hour today, and several times before, RX Med's stupid spam site has been popping up for almost every legitimate site I try.  NYTimes, FilePlanet, Steam, Gamespy, all of those are co-opted.  It's not on my computer's end, either; I've tried from different on-campus IP addresses, with different computers.  My machine is clean of spyware, and my hosts file is locked down tight.

Is this something I should be bitching to our 9-to-2 IT department about, or is it typical now to have mainstream sites hijacked for a day at a time?
1339  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half Life 2 - the reviews are in on: November 15, 2004, 08:44:20 PM
I'm hoping that those 'disappointing' aspects like story and AI are disappointing in comparison with the best imagined theoretical wonderful versions, and not in comparison to, say, Far Cry.  As a college student myself, I'm all for grading it on the curve instead.
1340  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Q] How did Halo 2 impact your life? on: November 15, 2004, 08:42:14 PM
Not a bit.  I have Tuesdays off anyway (love that MWF class schedule), so it was easy for me to wait up and then play until 3 and still not miss anything.  It would've had me tired on Tuesday night, since I was up again, but a 2:45 AM fire drill in the dorms meant that everyone was tired and cranky the next day.

1342  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2: Steam vs Retail on: November 15, 2004, 06:59:32 PM
Also, it would be difficult to sell unless you have a buyer who trusts you quite a bit.  Because the unlocking is key-based, not CD-based, you could easily sell off the CDs to some poor clueless soul without the username and password of the Steam account that it was registered to.  I know I wouldn't trust someone to sell me a copy of HL2 that had been unsealed already.

1344  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / OFFICIAL HALO2 CLAN NAME POLL on: November 13, 2004, 05:58:09 PM
I like Knightshade(s) as a backup.  It's not totally dumb or official-sounding, and not really likely to be taken.

Of course, I pity the poor fool who tries to restart THE CURSED HALO 2 POLL OF DEATH!
1345  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / No Movie for you! on: November 12, 2004, 11:20:40 PM
The FCC can't tell them what they can or can't air; that would be censorship.  They can only impose such hefty fines that it's not economically viable to air much of anything.
1346  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / HALO 2 CLAN on: November 12, 2004, 08:21:40 PM
Let's wait for KD.  He said his XBox would be up and running by today at the latest, so we'll at least give him a shot to give us the go-ahead to make an official unofficial temporary clan.

Yeah, I know the one you're talking about.  I got curious too, it offered to sign me off Live because co-op is only playable by split-screen or whatever.

1351  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Good web hosting? on: November 12, 2004, 05:52:45 AM
It's a freaking big page with what looks like lots of CSS and such, but it loads and renders fine and fast on Firefox 1.0.  No slowdown here, and even the main page renders in under a second (at 12:52 AM here, I'll try again tomorrow prime-time).  Try going to the command line and running 'tracert' and see if it's a Comcast server or something in between slowing you down.
1352  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Halo 2 breaks all sorts of records... on: November 12, 2004, 05:49:47 AM
If MA2 just implements the virtual couch and some robust playlist modes like Halo 2 with the same core gameplay, it'll already be pretty impressive.  I'm coming to the conclusion that 50% of the enjoyability of Halo 2 on Live is the seamless integration of the party system, the matchmaking, and the well-thought out Friends interface.  If every online game could be like that, it would be wonderful.
1353  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Halo 2 - It's ON! (impressions thread) on: November 12, 2004, 05:48:08 AM
I think when you try that it tells you that you can only do it on the same box.  I'm 99% sure that online co-op was dropped.

Well I take back a few of the harsher things I said about Halo 2.  I still think the single player is a big let down and that they dropped the ball on it, but I got to play some 2v2 on split screen last night, and man... it's really apparent they spent a lot of time getting the multiplayer just right.

We had some really great games doing nothing more than simple deathmatch.  If I ever decide to get XBLive I'll have to check out the online play as well, but as far as lan play goes I'm sold.

I would go so far as to say this game justifies XBLive in and of itself.  I've played some split-screen matches too, in teh dorm; 2v2 is fun, especially on the smaller maps, but you haven't played until you've played some 4v4 or more CTF.  When you have a fully loaded Warthog, two Ghosts, and a Banshee all rolling out on the offensive at once, it gets fairly epic fairly quickly.
1357  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Halo 2 - It's ON! (impressions thread) on: November 11, 2004, 08:06:33 PM
For the people reporting graphical hiccups, what model XBox do you have?  Our dorm has one from original release, and mine is much more recent; a lot of the stutters that are noticable on the older one aren't on the new one.  I don't know if it's just the older DVD drives or what, but the pop-in and stutter don't feel as bad on the newer XBox.

I'd like to run it to keep it official if we can.  My Xbox died on me which is why this isn't already done before you guys even GOT your copies.  What bad timing.  As we speak, my staff is taunting me because I can't play...I can feel the love, its sticking sharply in my back!  I should be back on my feet today or tomorrow at the latest.

Sure thing.  With no word, I wanted to get it on its feet, but since you're going to be up and running that soon, I'll leave it to you.
