1281  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Blizzard bans hackers on: December 04, 2004, 03:43:46 PM
Good.  Glad to see Blizzard is trying to preserve the fairness and balance of the game as long as they can.

a little on topic stuff here.

you could make an image of the disc and then install from that.  you would need the no-cd fix of course, but it would get you up and running.
you could also copy the installed directory over and hope that it contains everything that the game needs to run.  i did this with morrowind and it runs fine.
hope this helps.

Don't think it would help if his system can't read the DVD.  It's not copy-protection kicking him on install time, it's that his system can't actually recognize the disc itself (i.e., no filesystem shown).

How the heck do you fish??  I have a fishing pole but I can't seem to find a bobber.  Am I supposed to be using the shining bauble(sp?) to fish :? ?

Go near water.  Equip your fishing pole in your weapon hand (here's where it differs from skinning et. al.). Now, drag your 'fishing' skill down to the hotbar (NOT the pole itself, the skill from your spellbook) and click that.  Click the bobber when it starts to thrash around.  The lures increase your fishing skill temporarily, you'll probably want to start out with one of those just for skilling up.
1284  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW: there is something wrong with me! on: December 02, 2004, 11:02:20 PM
Honestly, a lot of it depends on what group you fall in with, especially if you're not a solo-oriented player.  I'd recommend creating a character to join the Wanderers or Almost Heroes (the two seemingly-semi-official CG guilds) on Whisperwind; see if playing with a group of mature(r) gamers helps your issues any.  I had a ton of fun soloing in the first stress test, then the open beta felt kind of dry.  But now that I've fallen in with the Wanderers, I'm having even more fun than I did at first.

Expect to see me a lot after that, when I settle down to a volunteer job for 40 REGULAR hours a week.

I'd fire it up and take one myself, but I have a speech, a term paper, and a project due tomorrow that can't afford me going 'hey, just five more minutes, honest'.

1289  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Questions regarding Xbox, Xbox Live and subscription costs on: December 02, 2004, 06:41:03 PM
As far as I know:

1) It really is that simple.  There's an RJ45 jack on the back of the XBox.  I have it sitting connected to my Linksys router right now, for Halo 2 action.  No dongles, no 'accessory kits'.  The only extra hardware I have is the headphones that came with my Live! starter kit, and those are optional.

2) There are third-party options.  In fact, I believe several people in here use them since XBoxes with modded hard drives were banned from Live.  I'm sure one of them will chime in shortly.

3) Yeah, as far as I know, you need the Live subscription for new content; that's one thing that isn't done through the third-party options.  So far, though, I've really not gotten much benefit from third-party options; a few boards for MechAssault (which I never play), a new one for Halo 2 (which I do play), and a couple of Splinter Cell levels, which was nice.

4) I have a decent PC, and will always consider myself a PC gamer first and foremost, but I get a lot of good use out of my XBox.  A lot of it, I admit, is my dorm environment; it's nice to pop in Madden, NHL 2K5, or Burnout 3 and just screw around with roommates for a while.  I play a lot less at home where I don't have other people who play, but I still get get use off of Live there.  Really, it depends on what kind of games you like.  The Box won't give you the depth or breadth of a lot of the PC games out there, but the PC can't approach the XBox on a lot of sports games and racing games.

That said, I don't think there's a much better investment out there for the $150-$200 it will run you right now to pick one up.  I have a pretty decent old machine; it's under the 2 GhZ mark, and my video card is getting up there in time now, but I don't see a pressing need to upgrade anytime in the near future.  I can run pretty much any game from this year's push of quality titles with no problem at high detail, and I don't see anything coming out in the near or medium turn that pushes the hardware any more than Doom 3 or HL2.  UT2K4 is running smoothly on my 700 mhz laptop with a 7000-era Radeon Mobile card.  You figure those engines will be in use for quite a while yet, people will figure out more tricks to get them running smoothly as the engines mature, and your machine will probably suffice as is for well over a year unless something truly revolutionary comes along out of nowhere.  The XBox, with a large library of titles available, a pretty good Platinum Hits collection for cheap, and smooth online play, is a great return-on-investment compared to the play you'd get out of a mid-range video card or the chunk of RAM you'd get for the same price.

/rant off.

It's things like this that make me not care about professional sports anymore, even if all the home runs and high-scoring games are 'exciting' and supposed to draw me in.  Show me real athletes who behave like professionals any day over these losers.

What a joke if he ever plays baseball again, after not only taking steroids, but lying to the public about it.  The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth isn't very respectable if it's only to avoid perjury charges.

If it's lost, how come there's 80 people in it?   Tongue
1296  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / How the hell do I play HL 2 offline??? on: November 23, 2004, 09:01:57 PM
Look, you can't run HL2 without Steam, okay?  If you start up Steam in the absence of a Net connection, it runs in offline mode.  There's no way around running Steam.  Steam can run offline, but HL2 can't run without Steam.

If you physically take that jack and yank the cord out, then start Steam, it will start in offline mode.  Otherwise, you have no choice.  If you're online, it logs on.

Edited to add: Unless you've put in the -heapsize option, HL2 won't use all of your available RAM anyway.

Just wanted to say, that I changed my password thinking that I would see the, "remember my password" box. I didn't. Grrrr. I think it's nonsense that by default it runs steam in the background. I hope I can get around this.

If Steam is running without asking you for a password at start, and going straight to the background, you're good to go anyway; remembering your password is the default behavior.  If you don't like that, there's a box in Settings that says 'Don't remember account information on this computer.'
1298  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / How the hell do I play HL 2 offline??? on: November 23, 2004, 07:19:28 PM
Go to the game under 'Play Games'.  Right-click it, go to Properties.  If it says 'Offline Mode Ready', you're good to go.

If you're offline and you start Steam, it'll detect that you're offline and give you access to your games based on the saved password.  If you're online, it will never go to offline mode without some nifty firewall tricks.

There's no excuse on the part of the players or the fans.  It's hardly comparable, but when I ran track, I had stuff thrown at me by fans of the host team.  You know what I did?  Found the manager of the meet, pointed them out AFTER my race was over, and as far as I know, they were suspended.  And imagine, me showing such restraint without making obscene amounts of money to ease my pain and indignation!

Sorry, but a professional shouldn't be rushing the stands no matter what's being thrown at them.  I don't have as much of an issue with decking a guy sucker-punching them, but if they're throwing beer, you wipe it off, change your jersey, and keep playing.  Playing sports isn't an excuse to act like a fuckwad, on the court or off.

As for the fans, I hope anyone who was caught throwing stuff on camera is indicted for assault, and anyone caught throwing a punch is indicted for battery.  Watching sports isn't a license to act like a fuckwad, in the arena or out.

Suppose I'm interested in getting started with the pen-and-paper White Wolf books; is this game a good starting point so that I have an idea of what's going on?  I have a pretty good group for tabletop RPGs, and a few of us are interested in the World of Darkness stuff, but none of us really has a frame of reference.
1303  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half-Life 2 Impressions (Possible Spoilers) on: November 18, 2004, 08:53:41 PM
Wow... I just saw a screenshot and had a thought.

Go back a few years in your memory, to whatever the last screenshots you saw of TF2 were (God, when was that?  '98?  '99?  I'm getting old...).   Now, when you get far enough in the game, look at your squadmates.  The red cross on white armband... the rocket launcher guys... the ruined-city looking setting... looking familiar?

Conclusion, with the support of absolutely no evidence but a great gut feeling:  TF2 or TFC:S is coming after all, and it's set in City 17-style environments, with HL2-style characters.  The infrastructure is there, the physics are there... hell, imagine the Engineer class with HL2-style sentries, a gravity gun, and full-on demolition charges, in a modernized 2Forts, tossing explosive barrels back and forth between bases, snipers with those cool-looking blue beams, heavy gunners with a mobile Combine cannon, scouts (concussion grenades + ragdoll physics = fun), soldiers lobbing rockets back and forth...

I'm not even going to mention the other class I want to see, because I'd drool on the keyboard too much.  Mmm, HL-2 quality flames...
1304  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The HL2 OMG that was cool thread on: November 18, 2004, 08:43:57 PM
Going Wild West with the revolver and six Combine guards, then getting killed by number seven, eight, and nine.

Going up to a device I've never seen, hitting a switch, and suddenly seeing antlions pour out of the sand at me.

The crane.  Especially letting the Combine soldiers come out and start firing at me... picking up a 30 foot metal container and getting a good, heavy swing going before finally nailing them to a wall with it..  I don't think I've ever seen such a satisfyingly final death in a game before.

Sawblades.  Oh emm gee.

Anything with Striders in it.

That's about everything short of spoilers for me.  But there's a LOT of spoilers.
1305  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 Offline Mode -* First Post Edit *- on: November 16, 2004, 08:14:18 PM
It only accesses offline mode if you're actually offline.  Start Steam without a network connection, after having successfully logged in before, and it'll try to find one, then start in offline mode, where you can play anything you have all the local files for.

P4 1.8 gigahertz
1 gig RAM
Radeon 9600 Pro AIW

I have it on High, 1024x768, and it runs mostly smooth, with ever so occasional of a stutter, not enough to bother me in the least.  I may turn down detail if things bog down too much, but considering I've had multiple explosions, vehicles, and characters onscreen at once in massively open areas while the engine is doing AI and physics calculations... if this game CAN throw any more at my computer, I'd love to see it.

Okay, I'm sick of this.  For the last hour today, and several times before, RX Med's stupid spam site has been popping up for almost every legitimate site I try.  NYTimes, FilePlanet, Steam, Gamespy, all of those are co-opted.  It's not on my computer's end, either; I've tried from different on-campus IP addresses, with different computers.  My machine is clean of spyware, and my hosts file is locked down tight.

Is this something I should be bitching to our 9-to-2 IT department about, or is it typical now to have mainstream sites hijacked for a day at a time?

Not a bit.  I have Tuesdays off anyway (love that MWF class schedule), so it was easy for me to wait up and then play until 3 and still not miss anything.  It would've had me tired on Tuesday night, since I was up again, but a 2:45 AM fire drill in the dorms meant that everyone was tired and cranky the next day.

Also, it would be difficult to sell unless you have a buyer who trusts you quite a bit.  Because the unlocking is key-based, not CD-based, you could easily sell off the CDs to some poor clueless soul without the username and password of the Steam account that it was registered to.  I know I wouldn't trust someone to sell me a copy of HL2 that had been unsealed already.
