Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Sound card and headphone recommendations?
|
on: October 20, 2004, 02:03:21 AM
|
|
I've been using a pair of Bose QuietComfort 2 headphones for a while now. They are, without a shadow of a doubt, the best audio equipment I've ever owned, and well worth it. The sound cancellation is great, especially for a noisy dorm room (if I have my eyes closed, I can miss the phone ringing, and can't hear the TV over even quiet music), they're comfortable for long stretches, and the sound quality is great.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Counterstrike:Source, is it safe to go in the water?

Give it a shot. Every time I play CS, I play passively; don't get caught up in the talk and don't ask too many dumb questions, and generally things go ok. TKing isn't a huge problem most of the time for me; just be prepared for a dumb team if you go out and play on public servers.

With all the chaos at my university last year when the Yankees won this series, I'm just hoping for it to go to Game 7. Anything for a little more chaos.

Doesn't double clicking the little mail icon automatically open up Gmail, no need to enter in your password? Yeah, it does, as long as you click the 'two weeks' link on the gmail homepage once. Otherwise double-clicking brings you to sign-in.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Problem with KOTOR installation. Please advise!!!

Why reformat? Go to some KOTOR forums, find out what hidden files and registry entries the game installs, and delete them. Reformatting would be like using a nuke to take out a city where you know a murderer is living.
If I had the game myself, I'd help you.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Jon Stewart rips into CNN's Crossfire...on Crossfire

They invited him expecting an easy target to make them feel good about themselves as a show that can ask the hard questions. But like he said, when you have to criticize the journalistic standards of a fake news show whose lead-in is puppet crank calls, what does that say about you? For what it's worth, I think Jon Stewart is one of the best interviewers out there today, Kerry interview regardless, and certainly more insightful and relevant than Crossfire's hosts.
The Crossfire guys deserved every second of his haranguing, and especially the audience applause at his criticism (which I don't think they expected at all, and seemed to throw them off).

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Yankees 2, Red Sox 0, bottom of the 3rd...

SOUR GRAPES. That's what it's all about if your're a fan of a team that can't handle the fact that the Yankee's front office goes after and get's the best talent available, and WIN.
TALENT, and professionalism, is what win's world series.
At this point, and I heard this same comment echoed on a sports radio talk show last week is this; The Yankee's ARE a PRO team, they come to the game ready to play as professionals. The Red Sox, they are like a college frat house full of individuals with the personality quirks and they are not up to the task of winning this series against the Yankees.
It's NOT the Yankee's fault the Red Sox suck....
26 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS the Yankees have...
ZERO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS the Boston Red Sox have...
The facts speak for themselves...I know who the better team is, and it's isn't the Red Sox. Why do you hate apostrophes so? Oh, and for the record, I'd like to see the Yankees put together the same talent and professionalism on a salary cap. Buying the fastest car on the road doesn't make me a better driver, but I bet I'd win more races until everyone else had one.

Yes, they were told that users weren't going to have the problems they used to. However, if you look at the company that produces Starforce, they've been telling USERS that they're not really having the problems they're having with previous versions.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Sell me on another browser than IE
|
on: October 16, 2004, 02:55:02 PM

What I love about Opera is that when you start it up, you can have the exact same browsing session you had when you previously quit! I could not find a Firefox extension that did that. Firefox lets you have many home pages, but Opera's implementation of this is better. Also, Opera is a full featured browser "out of the box" while you have to install third party extensions for Firefox, and they may or may not work with other extensions.
I used it for a year before I paid for it, but I only use IE for those few incompatible pages now.
Lorini Tabbrowser-Extensions. Go to Startup, and click 'Restore Last Tab Session'. Voila.

I still find myself typing 'go' instead of 'co' to get here (yay autocompletion!), but otherwise it's starting to fill in nicely. We need more good activity on the Off-Topic boards for when I get bored, though.

Gratch, there's an IE-View extension out there for Firefox that, if I'm not mistaken, uses the IE renderer for selected Firefox pages. I've never used it, as I'm not locked into any browser at work, but you might want to give it a shot and see if it can help.

Dust. Dust dust dust dust dust.
Fastest way to kill a CD-ROM drive, excepting hard shocks (which a desktop shouldn't be taking). Blow out your case with compressed air every so often; get all those little nooks and crannies. Between lasers and moving parts, dust can wreak a lot of havoc.

I still think it could be a heat-related issue. I had a heat-related problem a few years ago with almost the same symptoms; the inevitable BSOD seemed to pick a random process from my task manager, so if you're running the firewall all the time, maybe it's just picking that to crash on for some reason, especialy if it's taking up a lot of CPU cycles.
The easy test for this is to run something that takes a LOT of CPU cycles and see if it crashes faster. When I had heat issues my system would normally run for about an hour, but then would crash within two minutes of running some heavy compiling in C++.

Congrats, Malachai. I'll second the 'Jersey Girl' recommendation; sure, if you wanted a romantic comedy, that's not it. But for a good father-daughter flick, it's about all I can think of, and pretty well-done at that.

I recall seeing a magazine scan in Evil Avatar that addressed the price issues on the PSP a while back; there was a $350 package, but that included a 256MB memory stick, extra software, and a GPS reciever (go figure), plus all the little neat addons you would expect with a high-end package deal.
There was an intro price that was significantly easier on the wallet, though I forget what it was.

GamerTag is KeySJU; it's actually shared between an entire dorm, so if you add me to your friends list, you should be able to get a decent game most, if not all, of the time.
Edit: No longer shared. There were issues with that setup, so it's back to me and me alone.
Games list: Midnight Club II MechAssault Full Spectrum Warrior MtG: Battlegrounds Counterstrike NHL 2K5 Burnout 3

Hey All
Another idea that Ron and I had kicked around a while back was to add some stuff into our system to allow people to build an online listing of their game collections here on our site. From there it would be a simple matter of also allowing you to mark certain games that you like to play online (i.e. make it possible for you to find all other CG'ers that you could invite to play a round of CS:Source or Halo2.) Even take it a step further and let you mark titles that you want to offer up for trade. . Do this, and you'd have me here for good (not that I won't be anyway, but damn, that's a good suggestion). Also, thanks again to you CG guys who kind of got blindsided by the GG swarm; you've been nothing less than outstanding in accomodating us. I'd never ask you guys to do as much as you've done already on your own.
