1281  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Soldiers HoWW2 MP Patch out on: November 05, 2004, 02:41:45 PM
Let me know if this is worth reinstalling the game for.
1282  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Penny Arcade's "Child's Play" toy drive on: November 04, 2004, 05:43:25 PM
This is a cause every gamer should be donating to.  It's nice when the media picks up on a story like this, rather than (for example) the Australian kids who apparently became murderers because of CS, and also maybe that devil music.  It's nice to get out the message that gamers, like everyone else, are by and large decent, generous people.

CNN is now reporting that he's critical, but saying hospital officials deny that he's dead.
1284  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Why WoW? on: November 04, 2004, 03:39:03 PM

WoW may not be too impressive from the initial retail release, but you must consider how Blizzard supports its games.  They will be improving, expanding, adding content for years to come.  Plus think of all the cool events Blizzard will be hosting and all the hidden treasure/secrets to find.  The ideas are endless.

Blizzard has the plans and manpower to make WoW fresh for a long time.  This is what excites me the most.

That's what's keeping me, a general non-MMORPG player, interested in this one.  Blizzard seems like they have the infrastructure and the gameworld to toss some fun events and storyline in.  City of Heroes... eh.  I played for a while, hit the same wall that most everyone else seemed to, and now I'm waiting for another couple of content packs.  It's not so much the ability to add more content that I'm looking for in my next MMORPG, it's the ability to keep things interesting between big content dumps.  Not just 'play out what's there, yawn, ooh content dump, play out what's there now, yawn, etc.'

Ditto.  We appreciate the chance you're giving us to show that it can be done in a mostly civil, appropriate manner.

The Country will never be united as long as the Religious right is so fanatical..

Hmmm... Funny how tolerance - the mantra for those on the left -  seems to be a one way street.  The anti-religious demand it from Christians, but yet are only "tolerant" themselves towards ideas they agree with.  I've seen none so fanatical as those who blame the "religious right" for every ill.

Um, I fully agree with the right of fantatical x'ers (where X is your chosen religion/bias/cult) to home-school their kids, be insular about their beliefs, be biased against one group of people, whatever.  My tolerance hits its limit when they try to choose for me.  There's a difference between allowing people to do what they want in private, and telling them what they can or can't do in the public realm.

Of course, I describe myself as moderate... maybe I'm far more extremist than I thought?

1289  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / post your WoW main/alt plans! on: November 02, 2004, 07:31:12 PM
I was going to have my main be an undead mage, but after playing a warlock up to level 11 in the new stress test, I'm thinking I might go that way instead.  I'm having a lot of fun with the curses and the pets, as opposed to just nuking whatever comes my way.
1290  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / WOW stress 2 has begun on: November 02, 2004, 12:55:25 AM
Downloaded... confirmed that you have to use Windows' built-in zip manager or WinZip.  WinRAR chokes on the file.

Edit:  And I can't get through the account creation process, either.

Edit edit:  Wouldn't you know that, the MOMENT I submit that last edit, it works.

It's fun watching the FP download speed go down slowly as more and more people start hammering the servers... I started at 500KB/sec, pretty reasonable on my connection.  Now I'm at 90K/sec and falling.  Stop downloading, you people!

Dreamhost.  Had nothing but good service with them.  About $100-$120 a year for more bandwidth and disk space than most people need, with full PHP support (along with a bunch of other languages), multiple SQL databases (I run two wikis on mine), email, and full telnet/SSH support.

Um, yeah.  So you do what they explicitly tell you not to do, then you lie to get out of it... I'm thinking, you know, that it wasn't the smartest move because you lied about something that's easily checked up on, and now you're scrambling to fake documentation.

My advice is to forget about that job, and definitely not to list that job on your resume, lest any potential future employers find out that you disobey orders, then lie to your employers, and then try to fake your way out of it.  Honestly, a short jail stay for shoplifting would probably look better on a resume than getting that off a phone call to a former employer.

Does the updated Source version include the bots from CZ? Although they arn't a replacement for real people I think they could be a could be a descent trainer for someone to at least learn the maps and weapons before jumping into the online pool witht the pirahnas.

The pirahnas are what I'm worried about.  Frankly I suck and I don't know the maps.  And I don't believe the Source version has bots.  It's online only.

It will, (the commands are in the console, just disabled for now, and some required files are missing) but not yet.  I've heard that some folks got the CZ bots working in Source with some inspired hacking, but I've yet to see any evidence of this, and I'm certainly not risking putting any unauthorized hacks in my Steam directory.

1299  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / So I never played CounterStrike. Feel free to mock me. on: October 30, 2004, 03:55:36 PM
It's probably a good idea to play through the 'easy' campaign of CZ first, just to acquaint yourself with the weapons and maps so you don't have to run around the map aimlessly for several rounds, but after that, I say just jump in.

After the intitial online validation, do you need to be connected to the Internet to play single player game??????

Definitive answer: NO.  The FAQ posted on EvilAvatar was very clear about that.  Connect once, activate, and you're good to go after you pull the internet cable.

People need to let this go. It's funny, but there's no reason to hate the girl, any more than any other spoiled brat celebrity. All she wants is what ever other teenager wants, and that is to be a rock star. She fucked up, paniked, and blamed her band, but compared to other famous people (nba players, for example), it's a pretty mild offense.

What if we hate all spoiled brat celebrities?  Is it okay to make fun of her because she's now made herself an easy target?
1304  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Far Cry 1.3 patch on: October 25, 2004, 06:16:16 PM
Ugh.  Look at the known issues list; I don't feel like starting over because I installed a patch that they refused to provide a 'rollback' patch for and now savegames are borked.  Not  to mention setting my quality lower because I'm using Cat 4.9 drivers.   Or checking CapsLock before I start the game.  If you're going to disappear for months to 'fix' a patch, at least show up at the door with something that's quality.  They released a great game, but they need to work on support quite a bit.

What if you don't have the internet?  How do you register/play HL2?  Are they going to have a 800 number to call ala Microsoft?

You don't.  I expect 'working Internet connection' will be in the requirements on the box.  It'll probably piss a lot of people off, but that's the risk they run.

It'll be 'gotten around' within the first day, if not sooner, methinks.

But surely any method to 'get around' this kind of thing would require an Internet connection to find.

I hope it's not moved up too far.  I just got into the beta.

I also hope I can get to it from behind my firewall, of course.  Not looking promising, since I can't launch the Sony LaunchPad, and there's no response from their webserver.  If WoW is the only thing I can actually play (stress test worked fine behind my firewall), then it wins by default.

Also, it's gall, not gaul.  Been playing a little too much Rome: Total War lately?
1312  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Battlefield: 1942 Anthology bundle pack question on: October 23, 2004, 06:18:38 PM
No offense, but if you're looking for the kind of depth and complexity that requires an extensive printed manual, BF1942 probably isn't going to be your cup of tea.  I never cracked the manual once in all my time playing.

As for the add-ons, you really, REALLY don't need a manual for those.  They're basically packs of additional maps and weapons; I don't think they added any notable features.  And there are plenty of maps and weapon lists online to look at if you want info on them, some on sites that would put a printed manual to shame.  It would be like having a printed manual for the UT2K4 Community Bonus Pack.
1313  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [P] Majority of Bush supporters think Iraq had WMD on: October 23, 2004, 06:15:20 PM
Quote from: "JSHAW"
So what do you guys think happened to the WMD?

If you have more choices to pick from than these, post them;

1. WMD moved prior to the invasion/war.
2. WMD programs dismantled and nonexistant prior to the invasion/war.
3. NO WMD prior to the invasion/war.
4. WMD's buried in the sand, underground, not yet found, never will be found.

WMDs mostly dismantled, lost, or sold to other factions, but all of that occurring years and years ago.  I think there's a continuing threat from the mere existence of those weapons, but I don't think Saddam, at least at the time of the invasion, posed any additional threat, and wasn't manufacturing any more at the moment (even if he wanted to).  I also think the invasion itself, and the anarchy that followed, resulted in a massive increase to the threat to the US, as any stockpiles and materiel that did exist for WMDs was distributed to parties unknown.  We needed more men on the ground, more oversight, and better planning, especially since we made WMDs such a huge part of the case to invade.

I was recently without internet for several months recently for a couple different reason and if that were to happen again, am i screwed?

You can copy the .gcf files to a CD or DVD for backup, though I'm not sure if you can reactivate those without an internet connection.  But as long as you have the single-player games installed and registered once, you can play them just the same.

That's not the issue.  We know they did have WMD in the past.  The dispute is whether they had WMD, or the faciilities to produce WMD, in terror-effective quantities at the time of our build-up to invasion.  That looks ever more doubtful.
