If we're doing tallies:
Tie tack/soccer jersey from Chile where my dad spent the last month
The official 'mission shirt' from the joint NASA/Chilean Armada mission he was on
America: The Book, a book from one of the essayists interviewed on the Daily Show, and a $25 B&N gift card
All-day paintball pass with equipment rental
Some really nice athletic wear; sweatshirt, shorts, and one of those nice Under Armour shirts.

I got America from a B Dalton that's shutting down for $15.  It's actually by the host of the Daily Show, Jon Stewart. smile  And it's funny as hell.

I know it's by the host... I meant I got another book from one of his interviewees on the show.  I'm more convinced with every year that Jon Stewart is one of the great interviewers of this generation... his talents are wasted on pimping bad movies and TV shows.

1248  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW and thier idiot quest programmer on: December 19, 2004, 01:39:15 AM
I've played pretty much exclusively Horde in the stress tests and open beta, and have a shaman at 32, with a roomie and a friend of mine being 32 and 33 themselves; we've never once lacked for quests, and most of the time I've had my quest log at least 3/4 full, and all I do is work on quests (can't stand grinding for too long).  A lot of the reason is perhaps that I go from one area to another, and travel back and forth trying to knock off my lowest-level quests before I outlevel them; it's good exp, easy, fast, and I've still generally had to abandon a quest or two every couple of levels because it's just not worth doing anymore (grayed out).
1249  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / ARRGHH!!!! Pulling hair out! Please help. on: December 17, 2004, 10:00:34 PM
Go PvE.  When you're in the mood for a scrap, run around the contested territories with your PvP flag on; I've never found most areas wanting for a fight or two, and usually you can get a pretty good 'pickup war' going by just running around a few folks with your PvP flag on.

Besides which, the PvP Battlegrounds system they're working on for PVP servers should provide exactly what you want; an area where you can go full PVP with objectives and areas to hold, but without getting in the way of questing elsewhere.

1251  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Phrases I hate. on: December 17, 2004, 01:23:07 AM
The only thing making mad props acceptable is when you, in jest of course, give specific numbers of them.

For example:
"That was clever.  You get two props."

That tends to annoy people who actually use it in conversations because they realize how dumb they sound.

Me, I'm waiting until I get enough props to trade for a turbojet.
1252  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / [WoW] PvP just not for me? on: December 16, 2004, 09:30:21 PM
PVP is definitely not for me.  Besides, I don't see any incentive to go PVP for this game... there's never a shortage of people willing to duel or PVP-battle on the PvE servers, plus you get to play minus the aggravation of getting ganked when you really don't feel like it.  Yeah, PVP can be atmospheric and intense and fun, but if you turn your PVP flag on in PvE, you can get jumped just as easily by anyone high-level passing by (if that's your thing).
1253  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PC Gaming version: Shut up! It IS time to reveal your GOTY on: December 16, 2004, 09:27:05 PM
Tough one.  Can't we have Games of the Year, or maybe just one GOTY for every year's worth of quality titles we got this year (which would come out to about 5 for me)?

World of Warcraft, HL2, Far Cry, and Rome are all struggling to be my GOTY.  Been addicted to WoW, but just reinstalled Far Cry last night, and getting the urge to play HL2 again.

Remember, the forum post said that it's a sneak peek, not a full changelog.  If it seems like too little for your class/profession, there's probably more.  Also, one of the Blizz community reps said that druids were getting a little love in the upcoming patch, so hopefully there's some changes there.

So maybe the databases have been overhauled and the auction house and mail may work as intended finally.  That'd be very nice.

How have they not been working as intended before?  (aside from the blank message to send items bug).
1259  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST Recap on: December 14, 2004, 03:22:48 PM
So I see that ABC is planning to run the pilot episode over tomorrow at 9, and I read somewhere that they're going into a mini-recap cycle before it starts airing again in January; so are they just showing the pilot again, or are they going to run all the episodes aired so far again before they start showing new ones?

I really, really want to get into this show, but I think it would be worse to see the pilot and then jump straight into the 12th episode, or wherever they are.

Let addict roommate play for the price of getting to keep the character he's working on now when he gets a new account and starts over.

Considering that hockey was always my favorite pro sport, and that I hate the parade of suck that has become of most pro sports nowadays, I'm allmost glad they're locked out.  I miss the hockey, but it gives the owners and players time to start acting like professionals, realize they're only screwing over their fans and themselves, and maybe start acting like civilized people again.

Do all blue items bind when you pick them up?

No, because I've seen several blues in the AH.  However, I think the default behavior for blue items in instances and drops is bind on pickup.  I love that it discourages item farming for real money, but it's annoying seeing blue loot you could use get picked off by someone who's just going to VT it.
1266  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW -- Grouped with Morons on: December 09, 2004, 07:12:39 PM
That's nothing.  Picking up blue items that you can't use... WITHOUT asking if anyone else wants them... that's gypped me out of four blues already.  And only one guy (a guildie) understood and actually apologized.

But to the other three idiots, and any other ones in the future, you shall incur my eternally-green-item-clad wrath.

1269  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / What are the must-see movies? on: December 07, 2004, 03:44:36 PM
My list:

The Third Man:  Just watch the lighting, the setting, and the monologue on the Ferris wheel.  Filmmaking doesn't get any better.

Princess Mononoke:  My personal Miyazaki favorite.

Black Hawk Down, especially if you've read the book and appreciate the reality behind the situation.  Sizemore is excellent in his role.

Princess Bride:  It's inconceivable that you haven't seen this.

a little on topic stuff here.

you could make an image of the disc and then install from that.  you would need the no-cd fix of course, but it would get you up and running.
you could also copy the installed directory over and hope that it contains everything that the game needs to run.  i did this with morrowind and it runs fine.
hope this helps.

Don't think it would help if his system can't read the DVD.  It's not copy-protection kicking him on install time, it's that his system can't actually recognize the disc itself (i.e., no filesystem shown).

How the heck do you fish??  I have a fishing pole but I can't seem to find a bobber.  Am I supposed to be using the shining bauble(sp?) to fish :? ?

Go near water.  Equip your fishing pole in your weapon hand (here's where it differs from skinning et. al.). Now, drag your 'fishing' skill down to the hotbar (NOT the pole itself, the skill from your spellbook) and click that.  Click the bobber when it starts to thrash around.  The lures increase your fishing skill temporarily, you'll probably want to start out with one of those just for skilling up.

Honestly, a lot of it depends on what group you fall in with, especially if you're not a solo-oriented player.  I'd recommend creating a character to join the Wanderers or Almost Heroes (the two seemingly-semi-official CG guilds) on Whisperwind; see if playing with a group of mature(r) gamers helps your issues any.  I had a ton of fun soloing in the first stress test, then the open beta felt kind of dry.  But now that I've fallen in with the Wanderers, I'm having even more fun than I did at first.

1280  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Questions regarding Xbox, Xbox Live and subscription costs on: December 02, 2004, 06:41:03 PM
As far as I know:

1) It really is that simple.  There's an RJ45 jack on the back of the XBox.  I have it sitting connected to my Linksys router right now, for Halo 2 action.  No dongles, no 'accessory kits'.  The only extra hardware I have is the headphones that came with my Live! starter kit, and those are optional.

2) There are third-party options.  In fact, I believe several people in here use them since XBoxes with modded hard drives were banned from Live.  I'm sure one of them will chime in shortly.

3) Yeah, as far as I know, you need the Live subscription for new content; that's one thing that isn't done through the third-party options.  So far, though, I've really not gotten much benefit from third-party options; a few boards for MechAssault (which I never play), a new one for Halo 2 (which I do play), and a couple of Splinter Cell levels, which was nice.

4) I have a decent PC, and will always consider myself a PC gamer first and foremost, but I get a lot of good use out of my XBox.  A lot of it, I admit, is my dorm environment; it's nice to pop in Madden, NHL 2K5, or Burnout 3 and just screw around with roommates for a while.  I play a lot less at home where I don't have other people who play, but I still get get use off of Live there.  Really, it depends on what kind of games you like.  The Box won't give you the depth or breadth of a lot of the PC games out there, but the PC can't approach the XBox on a lot of sports games and racing games.

That said, I don't think there's a much better investment out there for the $150-$200 it will run you right now to pick one up.  I have a pretty decent old machine; it's under the 2 GhZ mark, and my video card is getting up there in time now, but I don't see a pressing need to upgrade anytime in the near future.  I can run pretty much any game from this year's push of quality titles with no problem at high detail, and I don't see anything coming out in the near or medium turn that pushes the hardware any more than Doom 3 or HL2.  UT2K4 is running smoothly on my 700 mhz laptop with a 7000-era Radeon Mobile card.  You figure those engines will be in use for quite a while yet, people will figure out more tricks to get them running smoothly as the engines mature, and your machine will probably suffice as is for well over a year unless something truly revolutionary comes along out of nowhere.  The XBox, with a large library of titles available, a pretty good Platinum Hits collection for cheap, and smooth online play, is a great return-on-investment compared to the play you'd get out of a mid-range video card or the chunk of RAM you'd get for the same price.

/rant off.
