Got to have some great upgrades for that, including... wait for it... balloon tires! icon_lol

Anyone know for sure if this potentially awesome news is true?

I've still got Torchlight 2, Borderlands 2, and NHL 13 (plus FTL) to keep me busy. Maybe Little Big Planet Vita next time I look to be on the road. But we've finally hit the stretch of the year where there's too many games and not enough time.

Reposted from my morning rant on Facebook:

Well, since it's happening - here's my thought on the lockout. I believe both the players and the owners have made a terrible miscalculation - that any lengthy lockout will have as few lasting ramifications as the last one. The league is competing with so much more than they were last time around - and my whole generation of fans, who were in school or just starting out, and came back with our time and our disposable income, just came flooding back last time. Now we have families, careers, other responsibilities, and a lot of other things in our lives that we made trade-offs with to have the money and the time to spend on the NHL.

It's just so trivially easy to replace our entertainment now. Me, I'm going to replace the hours I spent watching hockey on Netflix or other things, and the travel and the money going to games will be for other things now. And when NHL hockey comes back, it won't be filling a hole - it will be competing with that other stuff, and the longer this goes, the harder it will be for the NHL to get as much of my time and attention ever again as it's had since the last lockout.

I mean, I believe I'm the type of fan the NHL should be terrified of losing - I have season tickets when practical, I travel to games in multiple cities, I always have Center Ice, I go to the Winter Classic every year, and I'm damn near always trying to be part of the conversation about hockey online, building its profile and spreading the game. Now I just have lockout fatigue - I'm done evangelizing the game for a while, even when it comes back, because hockey was the last thing I let myself get really emotionally invested in that I had absolutely no control over. At least when I suck at golf, or making candy, or writing, or anything like that - I own my failures and learn from them.

It would be nice if I felt like the NHL and the NHLPA were doing the same with their own failures.

I laid in bed last night thinking of alternative strategies to deal with intruders and whether to spend my money on this system or that. It's one of those type games.

This morning I played some more. One good tip, don't spend your scrap until you check the Jump Map. I missed out on a chance to buy a couple of crewmen because I was in too much of a hurry and didn't wait to check the next store.

I've flown and lost four Kestrels in a row, but I've got an Engi right now, which seems to be a slightly better ship. I'm doing decently, but I've reached that point where I'm reluctant to jump to a new system because it might just be the one that kills me paranoid

Man, I am just having such a tough time with combat in the Engi. So far I'm still tooling around with the Kestrel.

Lost my last ship when, down to a single crewmember, I decided to look into the Eye of Zoltan... and it transcended her to another plane of existence. Yow.

I'm over the whole Rory/Amy eternal love business though I like the, well enough otherwise. I could get used to Oswin, though...

The marital conflict thing seemed a little out of left field and there to serve the story instead of a natural progression for the characters.

I had a two-hour conversation with my housemates about this after watching the episode. I actually think significantly worse of Amy Pond's character for the way she handled it - I thought what she did was childish (in that, even though it was selfless, it was also very thoughtless). If this is the last we hear of it - lazy writing and it made me dislike the character, so that would suck. But I don't think it will be - I think that this opens up the potential for Rory to start having some doubts, not necessarily about whether Amy loves him, but about what she would do in a crisis and whether he can trust her.

My housemates are so wrapped up in Rory-love that they feel that it's central to his character that he OMGLOVESAMYFOREVARS, and that it would ruin his character to have him doubt her, even for a moment - while I think it would be awesome to see him have to really, genuinely struggle with a tough decision in a crisis and have to take her behavior into account. I think it's interesting in that all the external conflict made Rory a giant bad-ass, but now he might have some genuine internal turmoil to deal with.

I hope hope hope it makes for interesting characters, even if they're darker and maybe less likable (or if, since this is Doctor Who after all, they struggle with that, overcome it, and come out with happy endings).

Well, Steam has it listed as Summer, but also in between items at the end of September and the start of October in their release order. I'd guess around then is more likely.

I don't think Blizzard is shy about doing big changes, even well after a product has gone live. I wouldn't be shocked if we're seeing some major systems changes in a patch about a year out from release, and more when they release an expansion.

I'm not sure that some of these items couldn't have been predicted (is it really a shock that providing an efficient auction market resulted in drops being de-emphasized?), but given that they're willing to make changes and support this thing well out from release, I bet they solve at least a solid majority of them.

I know a lot of players would be screaming over it, but I wouldn't be shocked to see a Bind on Equip system make its way into 1.1 - that would resolve a lot of the AH issues.

Spent some good time on this last night. My WD is hugely buffed - the pet changes are massive and make the class a lot more fun, at least for the high-30s level range I was kind of mired in. The Monk changes are much subtler and I didn't really notice any outright differences, except that I was able to get through Act I of Inferno when before I was stuck in the Halls of Agony, where elite packs were wiping me every time - but I also got a good gear upgrade from a drop, so who knows if that's what pushed me over the top - probably a combination. 2H weapons are viable for Monks now, which is cool.

I ended up getting to Paragon level 1 with the Monk - it's got a nice little 'ding' animation, and I have to admit it was nice to have something other than gear to keep me playing, even if that bar does move veeeeery slowly. NV stacks contribute an experience bonus, which was another good reason to just run an entire Act - we'll have to see how I do on the 2nd act of Inferno now, whether I hit the wall or not.

Didn't really notice any rubberbanding, and the better animations for Molting and Frozen help out a lot - I might actually consider playing a hardcore character when I get bored with softcore now that I can see the things that will blow me up better.

Pretty gutsy by the 'Canes to bring in Sasha Semin on a 1-year deal at $7 million.

That's high, but he is a heck of a player, and on top of the forwards they already have his possession and defensive skills could make a big difference. I wouldn't be shocked to see him pot 35+ goals, and north of 40 if he's a first-liner there is not out of the question.

Those are both great games you're passing on.

I know, but at this point I have games I bought at the Steam Christmas sale I haven't touched, and not a ton of gaming time. I figure I'll stick with some more casual games as purchases until the backlog thins out a little (and work is calmer), and I can probably pick them both up for $10 in the next Steam holiday sale.

If they assume the status quo is the players' starting point (which is not unreasonable, the players seem okay with the current system and even offered to play another system under it), then meeting in the middle would be something like 51.5 percent to the players, which is reasonable. I would actually see 50-50 as likely the final split, but only if the players trade that 1.5 percent for the other bargaining chips the owners hold (getting rid of escrow, better final appeals process for discipline, schedule/realignment concerns, etc). If I were a betting man, we end up there, but the players have to give more than they wanted - maybe a fourth year on entry-level contracts, maybe expanding the contract slippage threshold to 20 games instead of 10, or giving up salary arbitration entirely.

Personally, I think it's a non-starter - rolling player salaries and share back isn't going to fix what's wrong with the league structure, which is the disparity between haves and have-nots from a market standpoint. They need to rework the whole revenue-sharing model, which is going to pit owners against owners (exactly why the league doesn't want to put it on the table).

The choices as I see them - address competitive concerns by screwing the players out of mobility (making small teams more competitive by giving them 3-4 more years of control and cheap salaries over drafted players), or do it by screwing big-market owners out of competitive advantage by making them share cash more evenly with their Sun Belt brethren.

I really do feel more pessimistic that we're going to lose October hockey at least.

A lot of it, and I think this is a shame, is just that time and moving sites has just split the 'original' forum population up to the point where there's no longer critical mass. I think a lot of the folks I enjoyed interacting with on the forums went even farther back than the Console Gold days, back to the original Gone Gold forums - then I think when in my life that was. When I was a more active part of that community, I was in high school, had all the time in the world, etc. The forum splits happened while I was in college, but it was cool because I had the time and energy on my hands to still follow both of the split forums pretty extensively. These days, I pretty much check here out of habit, and don't post a lot because I'm not a college kid spending all day on the Internet anymore - I've got a job that takes a bunch of time, way more non-computer-based hobbies, and when I am on a computer I'm spending my limited time playing games or doing other stuff than forums. Twitter has also sort of bumped forums down my list of 'things I do on the Internet', as well.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's had a ton of life changes in the decade-plus I've been participating in the various forums this community has drifted between. There are some fantastic folks around here, but you take any group of people with interests so varied and a few of them will drift off over time.

It sucks, but that's sort of just life. One moves on, finds other communities on other mediums, etc. I guess I could post a new non-depressing thread if it'd make anyone feel better. smile

It happens all the time.  Awesome though that this is going to generate a ton of money for two very good charities.  Fantastic response to this by The Oatmeal and if karma comes into play, FunnyJunk will lose the vast majority of their internet traffic (and thus their income ) over this.

It's just a shame that not more folks are linking/name-and-shaming the attorney who sent it, not just FunnyJunk. They're both culpable.

It's always a blow to deal with the Pens, especially for a serviceable player. But I think, given Fleury's regression, it's the right move for both teams - the Caps get something instead of nothing, and the Pens absolutely needed someone to push Fleury harder than Johnson could. Given that Washington has about emptied their system (the only high-ranking prospects they seem to have left outside of DC now are Grubeaur, Eakin and Galiev), moves like swapping Bourque for Hamill and Vokoun for a 7th should hopefully help rebuild some depth (not to mention hopefully holding on to the 1st from Colorado and their own). It's definitely a team that's going to have some holes to fill soon, and free agency can't hit all of them.

Yep, looks like another Patch Tuesday fiasco. Extended maintenance plus downtime.

I sort of remember early WoW being this bad or worse on Patch Tuesdays, though. The saving grace there was that there were enough realms that if you had a character on a second realm you had a good shot at one of the two being playable.
153  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Diablo III --Impressions start on page 36 -- on: May 29, 2012, 06:53:17 PM
It's actually pretty interesting to watch what's going on as they work on the Diablo 3 infrastructure - I mean, I run a much, much smaller application at my job, and I've seen some of the same kinds of things - for example, when the AH auctions were all unsorted. Our application tends to get a little weird with SQL queries when the DB is in bad shape, and sorting seems to be the first thing to go out the window - so seeing today's patchnotes where they talk about sorting of past auctions being fixed, then the AH still being down for 'database checks', makes me think "Hey! I bet they're scrambling around to defrag indexes, update statistics, and/or optimize queries 'til everything works!".

Not that it's such a stretch to imagine that the AH is wonky because the databases are slow, but it makes me feel better that Blizz deals with the same stuff I've seen, and the same patterns (sorting goes odd, then transactions get slow, then you have to start taking stuff that's not working offline)!

Wonder if they're fixing up the queries in-house, or if they've got some database consultants in to optimize the hell out of any calls against their AH database. Maybe they pulled queries from the WoW AH that scaled well to one side of one realm but couldn't scale up to all of D3.

I am starting to get sick of the first part of Act I - but only because I've run it about six times already, between four characters and co-op, not counting the open beta. One more to get a wizard up to a decent level, then another push forward. About to finish Act I with my demon hunter, and the monk's not far behind.

I'm really enjoying how differently each character plays, though - I suspect this persistence with getting one of each leveled is going to pay off soon. My Demon Hunter feels very well geared, so hopefully I can use him to grab some loot for the other characters - my Barbarian in particular was really only getting bows as drops for a long time, so I struggled even with the Skeleton King. The money I invested in the blacksmith early on is really paying off, though, as the salvage I'm getting ensures I have a few tries to get each character up to a minimally acceptable level of gear.

The thing I'm loving best right now is how absolutely not in a hurry I am right now to finish even Normal. Haven't touched my WD in a few days, played co-op as a monk (up to 13) and a DH (up to 9). Will probably pick the DH up tomorrow night, and just keep swapping back and forth until I can bring my WD back into the co-op rotation.

One thing I'll say is that I feel like I'm learning a lot more about the game playing all the encounters through as three classes. Since I'm planning on at least trying out some Hardcore mode eventually, I think this is pretty useful.

One thing I could be doing better at is trying the skills that don't immediately look great - need to figure out better builds instead of just going with the easiest options.

What's the prevailing opinion on salvage vs. sell?  Not having seen any of the higher level equipment, I'm not sure if it's better to hoard components for crafting or get more money so I can grab equipment from the shop.

What I've been doing is training up the blacksmith ahead of my level and seeing what items I will be able to use. What's been happening is that there will be a weapon or armor I can use, but not until a few levels away, and I can see how much materials it will need. So I can at that point salvage enough to get the materials I'll need when the time comes and then just sell everything else. That's been keeping me in enough gold to pick up interesting stuff from the merchants as well as being able to immediately pick up items from the blacksmith when they become available for my level.

I also stopped picking up whites and greys a long time ago. They are worth nothing vended and you fill up on blues pretty quickly.

I salvaged near everything through 21 on my Witch Doctor - now I've got enough mats stashed away that I can craft anything I want on lower level characters, to the point when I can craft the items as soon as they're unlocked. I figure I'll go back to salvaging when my stock drops below a full stack of essences.

Doubled on whites and grays, but watch out for gems or recipes, which are also white.
