Boy, am I glad I told the Devils season ticket rep to call me back in August when he got in touch a few weeks ago...  icon_eek

I can imagine a few ticketholders are PISSED. They had a 90% renewal rate and sold 2000 new packages, they had announced yesterday morning before the news broke.

I bought a Freelancer and I don't even know why.  Was weird picking a ship not really knowing much about it.  I kind of went with it because it looked neat.

That's one of my two ships as well (the other one being the Origin 325a). To me it looks like the ship that is the closest to the Millennium Falcon / Serenity kind of experience, which is why I got it in the first place.

I really want someone to be able to fly mine while I man the turret with my Oculus/Hydra combo...

I went to D&B with my engineers one time and they had the most bizarre Rambo gun-shooter there.  The storyline made little to no sense and was obviously put together by the scene sequence randomizer.  I'm still toying with building a MAME cabinet.  Anyone here ever built one?

No, but I'm thinking that after my next tiny NY apartment, when I move back out to suburbia I'll think about building one. The Ouya might be a solid base to work from - I've been super-happy with that as a reasonably-priced emulation device that basically takes no work to set up on its own, wouldn't take much power or cooling, and doesn't need a lot of space.

If you check out Reddit, /r/mame seems to be mostly cabinet-focused.
125  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Ouya on: July 07, 2013, 08:45:01 PM
You guys, apparently I'm super-lucky, or something - I happened to decide I needed a new distraction for the long weekend (because I have extremely poor judgment), and went on Amazon to check if the Ouya was available. Lo and behold, it was, and I Primed myself one with two controllers to play with over the holiday.

I freakin' love this thing. It really is unbelievably tiny, easy to set up, requires next to no cabling (power and HDMI), and in general is about as close to 'plug-n-play' as I've found in a console.

I unreservedly recommend it as long as you know exactly what you're getting - which is a kit that currently has next to nothing available "natively", but has ridiculously amazing/easy emulation capabilities - I've spent maybe fifteen minutes on the native games/demos, but I already feel like this thing is coming close to its worth.

Off its native app store, you can get emulators for Commodore 64, Atari, NES, SNES, GBA, Nintendo DS, Genesis, and PS1, and it's easy enough (even for a numbskull like me who knows zero about Android) to sideload MAME for arcade emulation. With an 8GB USB stick I had lying around and two controllers, this thing suddenly becomes a multiplayer emulation station that's SO. EASY. to set up and play.

I'm excited about the potential for seeing a ton of Flash games and Unity games ported over in short order, but I think this thing could be worth it at $99 even if very little additional software development gets done for it. I think it's a great little box that's awesome for an enthusiast who wants a bedroom 'retro' console or just to get their emulation onto the big screen easily.

I ended up staying mildly reasonable and just parking the Aurora LX in my garage. I'm hoping that the alpha will be out in time for me to at least try a Freelancer or an Origin 315p before I sink the cash on one of them - I love the idea of an exploration ship but I do want to tool around in them first before buying the lifetime insurance.

Damn. They've talked a lot about Oculus support, which has my absolute interest. I'm debating between the basic-est of basic packages, or the package with the MISC Freelancer, which would much more fit my playstyle...

I experienced a major glitch in the game too.  It might be due to running low on HD space.  I basically lost 5 hours of play and was forced to restart from the beginning.  I saw the "Loading 0.00%" message in the save screen but couldn't save because Save was disabled.  Luckily I didn't have any other issues after I deleted some old game data to make more space.

How much space is enough? I have 20GB+ free after the install.

Official technical support forums are the best place to go. That or post here first.

Not sure what's causing it. You're literally the first I've heard of such errors.

Yeah, just looked there. There's a twenty-page thread on this stickied to the top and the general advice seems to be that if your PS3's hard drive isn't in tip-top mechanical shape, The Last Of Us won't work - something about their engine just breaks if your HD transfer rate drops. Some people have had success by reformatting, and almost everyone who reports that they've put in a new hard drive say it's fixed the issue. My PS3 is pretty old (not a launch one, but the original big clunky model), so I guess my PS3 is just too worn out to actually play new games now (first time I've had issues like this though - played some Dirt 3 earlier this week without a problem).

I'll try reformatting tomorrow, I guess (since I don't have any saves on the PS3 I still care about), but I am not sinking a single dollar into buying new hardware and opening up my PS3 just to play this game. Oh, and I was dumb enough to buy it on the PSN so I can't even resell the game to partially recoup the cost.

Super, super frustrating.
131  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3] The Last Of Us on: June 27, 2013, 01:36:48 AM
Not sure if this was earlier in the thread (trying to avoid spoilers), but I can't play this.

Like, it's actually literally broken. I get about five minutes in, and there's a section where I get either a clipping error and fall through the map and have to quit, or about half a second of cutscene and then a "Loading 0.00%" screen that never changes.

So mad. I'm sure that not everyone is having this issue but it's a damn console game!

So, that's $60 down the drain for five minutes of quality entertainment...

Edit: Great, and when looking for any solution to the problem, I run across a GIANT F'ING SPOILER in a thread title. THANKS INTERNET. GLAD FOR THE HELP.

This year is the year I finally feel old - I can't both stay up for every night of late games AND be sufficiently productive at work. So I hit a middle ground - gut it out for a period or two, feel tired when I wake up, and also feel bad that I missed exciting endings.

Love the result of Rangers-Caps last night, not too happy with how we got there though - I'm still not 100% sold on Oleksy but with passes like that it's getting harder and harder to believe that he's just an uncannily lucky AHL scratch made good. What I'm hoping is that Lundqvist looks human for 3-4 minutes at a time every game - a little secondary scoring like that Chimera goal is going to make this series much easier than having to gut it out on 1-2 Ovi/Backstrom goals a night.

That Eller hit... man, Diaz owes him about fifty "I'm sorry" fruit baskets for even attempting that pass.

What the FUCK is wrong with people these days?? It's all so frustrating and depressing...

You could think of it like that. Or you could think of it like 'within 60 seconds of the explosions, there were police and Guardsmen and civilians pulling down barricades, and using belts to improvise tourniquets, and reacting so quickly and skillfully that even with a ghastly event like this, only 2 people (so far) have died.' They did that after 2 blasts, so they must have known, on some level, that another blast was possible, but they did it anyway. I don't think we're in a world where we just happen to have a high percentage of our good guys happen to stand around when this stuff happens - I think a damn high percentage of people are, when it comes down to it, selfless and well-meaning - I'll take that against bemoaning the one in a million people who are really, truly, maliciously insane.

I feel bad for the product team, and worse every time more of this nonsense comes out. EA as a corporate entity obviously are at fault here - but this is -such- a train wreck that we know that the project team has to have been handcuffed by release date and PR from implementing well or talking honestly.

This is clearly a project driven by the checkboxes EA wanted on a feature list, not by what a designer thought would be fun. I bet the original intent was to have cloud computing driving things like Sims, traffic, etc - but when the implementation was broken, or just not practical, the product team didn't have the weight to throw around to make the PR spin change. This just had to be an always-online, cloud-driven project, because the cloud is hot this year, don't'cha know? The folks saying it has to be aren't the ones figuring out how that will make it more fun.

Having been on doomed projects before (albeit not in this industry) - even the hopeless optimists on their side have probably known for a long time that this thing wasn't going to come together. That is the worst kind of work, and I hope the folks who are (justifiably) mad pile on where it's justified, instead of saying the product team is awful.

Dammit. Devs have admitted that casinos are broken and they're working on a fix.  Recycling plants are broken. Pathfinding is broken. I've been pretty forgiving about the server woes but I'm getting really disappointed that the game itself is turning out to be half baked.

If I had to guess - probably a lot of this stuff was working great on dev servers, but they've had to tune down/turn off anything remotely computationally intensive under a full server load in production. I know if I were building a game like this with cloud processing, pathfinding would be something I'd write a super-easy algorithm for just as a failsafe, assuming it would be used little enough that nobody would notice. They might just be waiting for enough people to move on to other games that they can turn it back on.

Or it might just be half-baked.
149  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / MLB 13: The Show [Vita] on: March 11, 2013, 03:50:39 AM
Anyone else playing this? I love the series, so I downloaded it Tuesday night - and promptly have run into a roadblock of having zero time so I've only managed to fit in about three half exhibition games.

It seems solidly harder than 12 was, even after turning down the difficulties - pitching is fine, but I'm having real trouble stringing hits together. Most of my games end up being 1-0 or 2-0 shutouts with me on the wrong side.

Frame rate is much smoother than last year's, so that's nice. It's still a damn attractive game for portable, and I still don't think there's a better ball game out there - until an NHL game comes out for Vita, this will probably be my top game in hours played on the platform.

153  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Microsoft Surface on: March 02, 2013, 03:03:09 PM
Random unstructured impressions before a busy weekend:

It's thicker, and heavier, than I expected, even knowing it was going to be thicker than the iPad. It feels pretty solid though - the kickstand is a really nice touch. I know a lot of folks who are super-picky about ergonomics complain that you can't really change the angle of it, but it works for me.

Mini-DisplayPort is great. I already have a cord for that kicking around for my Macbook so the thing docks right into my existing setup. The built-in display is crisp and bright, though auto-brightness is a bit wonky to say the least (I read that MS is already looking into patches for this).

Speaker is just okay, and I haven't had opportunity to try the headphones out yet.

The touchscreen is responsive, and the pen is fantastic - it acts as a pointer when it's close to the screen, which I didn't know and which is great.

It's fast, for a tablet - I threw Steam on there, and while I haven't played much of anything besides BIT.TRIP RUNNER, that ran smoothly, and even with the Type Cover controls well enough that I got through 1-11 eventually. I'm planning to use it for the foreseeable future more as a retro/adventure gaming console than anything that's going to push it, gaming-wise; it looks like I'll be able to play Sam and Max, Walking Dead, Monkey Island, and the Longest Journey series with just the pen (though I do have to tinker with the app settings to turn off the pixel scaling). Throw in Syberia and some other adventure games off of GOG, Football Manager, and maybe OOTP and I should have a lot to do without having to even set up as a laptop.

Battery life is adequate, for me - it's plugged in if I'm doing real work, and it lasted a night on my lap in front of the TV, so I don't need much more.

From a 'real work' perspective - I threw VPN on there, and was able with just a Bluetooth keyboard and the pen (day before my Type Cover arrived) VPN to my corporate network, remote desktop to a server, pull in some files via FTP, and do some work setting up applications and databases. With just this and a 3G hotspot, and especially now with the Type Cover, I can basically handle anything short of running a full HyperV environment for demos and research (and I'll do that as soon as there's an i7 model with 8GB+ of RAM).

Things I don't like - the Windows app store is crap (but I knew that already), so a lot of the stuff out there that would make the Metro part of the OS useful on a tablet is just awful. I haven't found a good Twitter client, there's a million unofficial Facebook apps that look sketchy as hell, and I haven't seen a good Google Reader client that doesn't crash. So my Metro usage consists of the touchscreen IE, my IM client (which is actually okay), and a Reddit app that's alright but prone to crashing. I'm hoping as this thing gets out in the wild in bigger numbers it'll start to see some real app support, just because the more things that are usable as a non-keyboarded tablet the more useful it'll be.

I think, just from the perspective of having a usable work laptop along with a LOT less weight than a full-size one, it's already a success - it's basically going to be my default personal machine for travel from now on, and I see it getting some time in front of the TV as a tablet as well (though I wouldn't use it for Kindle, etc - too heavy to sit and read with).

For the past month or so I can hardly check even new releases without retrying multiple times, let alone browse any selection, and the one thing I did buy (Pinball Arcade table pack) I had to retry 3 times. It might have been longer - hadn't touched the store in months before that.

I don't recall any issues, but I haven't really checked the Vita version since they put the store online.

That's sort of full of weasel words though. Of course you would expect a newer console with a small install base to have faster-growing sales than a console with a mature market and rumors of an impending successor. And the 'almost' means that it might not even be there.

Homebrew club tonight! Unfortunately none of our recent brews are ready (two in secondary, one kegged but without a way to get it easily to the club, one bottled but not fully carbonated yet). Next month should be great for that, as we'll have the equipment to bring properly carbonated draft beer in plus (with any luck) three or four new bottled varieties.

So today is just tasting and thinking up the next thing - probably ordering ingredients for an 80 Shilling ale someone wanted to try.

Work is work and we're just going to see what the rest of the week holds. Considering that last week had System Shock 2 come out, a Longest Journey sequel announced, and an awesome time at a speakeasy in a 1920s gangster costume, this week has its work cut out for it to measure up.

Then a slower day Friday, capped by trying out a speakeasy I've been wanting to go to for ages with a friend.
