41  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anyone else playing Sacred 2? on: December 01, 2008, 07:09:56 PM
Part of your issue with the TG (tho they seem a tad weak to me as well) is a fundamental core design methodology of the series:  Balancing recharge time vs. power.  No matter what build you go with, the main leveling dynamic in Sacred is just that.  Make a power stronger or reduce its recharge, or compromise... i.e. make it stronger but put attributes in STA, or reduce its recharge but put att in INT or STR  depending on the CA.

The whole character build advancement is very much a balancing act.  Figure out what recharge time you want for each ability, and don't read more runes, or slot any until you have some leeway there.  OR... screw recharge rates and have a few once-in-a-while KABOOM CAs... but for that you better be awesome with your primary attack.  Also noteworthy is that almost every class can go with a primary attack pool of abilities, or more magic oriented... focusing in one school is easiest to balance but hybrids are more fun.  The only archetype that doesnt have much choice there is HighElf as all her CA schools are magic.  She can still be a damn good battlemage if you hybrid your skills between magic and melee/ranged since hybrid CAs will still net you a caster.  Similarly all the SW CA schools are melee oriented, but he can be pulsing with power if you focus your skills down the middle between warfare and CA lore/tactics.

I've not played all weekend because the patch is rumored to have changed itemization and people were reporting inventory changes after the patch so I wanted to wait.  But of course I have the steam version, and well what happens when a German company releases a major (650MB) patch on a US holiday weekend? That's right... nothing.  Patch isn't even up on Steam halfway through Monday... grrr I wanna get back in there.

Also, early on try to gear up with as much +atk,+def gear as you are able, IME if your atk is not at about (your lvl*10) you will have trouble hitting things, and if your def is lower than the same you better be a very fast killer or never get in melee range.

Thats a pretty common misinterpretation of the game and very similar to how I took Sacred 1.  The thing to see is that this is meant to be a Diablo-esque Online/Offline experience.

It takes a step back, but think about it this way:  You don't even get your final skill till level 65, and the level cap is over 200.  There are nearly infinite builds on each archetype so if you don't like the powers you've chose re-roll.  You can finish a run through the main plot at any appropriate difficulty in a relative short time if you wanted, maybe 10 hours or so.  There are over 600 side quests and bosses scattered about the lands not attached to any quest at all.  You can play the story and shelf this, but that is not what you have there.  Its completely fine at any level to just start the game up and grind a few levels, if you outlevel the spawn cap in that area the game is always pointing to where the next hardest zone is.  The main quest has basically 3 purposes while the game can be enjoyed in many others.  The MQ provides story and legacy for those who like narrative in this sort of game, It also must be completed once at each difficulty to unlock the next (except unlocking silver), and 3rd it provides certain fixed equipment rewards that are very nice if you haven't been out grinding and exploring.  The game should not feel like it has a slow pace, the only time I get that sense is when I am studying my map or trading/upgrading gear.  Otherwise you can just gogogo.  Im pretty sure I could get any char to lvl 10 on Silver in about 3 hours or so.  But I think the essence here is to realize that this game is not on rails at all even though its presented to be.  The world scales to some extent so its very hard to wander so far that its unsurmountable, but you could if you wanted to.  Next time just start a char and start walking somewhere its way more interesting.  The game has more in common with Fallout and Oblivion than it does with Dungeon Siege or that ilk.  TQ, Diablo yes... any other kind of RPG nope.

Edited to add that the reason I compare it to FO3 and TES4 is that the one thing it does not share with TQ or Diablo is that they are completely on rails.  Sure Diablo has random levels but still rails.  This is a huge prefabricated world open to explore.

No ones talking about it on OO either, terrible release timing.  Just giving this a bump to say I'm playing and I think its great.  We should try to get together for some MP if any one is still on-board.  Playing it in HC mode makes it almost a 3d roguelike, really great ARPG.

Just popping in here to say great party, great fun... Thanks for the hospitality Pete I'm glad I happened to be in town that weekend.  Hope I didn't sing too loud. ;p

KATO you are a badass sir.  You were pretty faded it seemed by the time we arrived, but still your calm collected honorable demeanor speaks volumes.

And as for the photos... Moliere and I arrived at about 5pm and I can confidently say that most photo ops were inappropriate for at least half of the subjects.  No one busted a camera out and no one mentioned it.  Considering that more than a couple of us were stone cold sober, that should say enough.  And once Pete got to the whiskey well...  eek

But I do think KATO got the Pete picture mixed up, he's Ritchie Sambora dammit!  IIRC it was Hark spinning on his back but I was a bit preoccupied trying to learn drums at that time.

I would like to note that IGE also advertises (full-page back-cover ads, often) in many of the major gaming magazines.

This in no way is an excuse, but if you bring up Gone Gold being in PC Gamer, you can't ignore the fact that (IIRC) Computer Gaming World has IGE ads as we do.

Lokiju was saying that the ad in PC Gamer was bringing positive press to GG in the gaming industry.  That in fact has nothing to do with your point of 'CGW has the same ad we do'.

I would also argue that the statement you make leads to a very slippery slope of wrong-think and corruption.  The 'everyone else' standard of behavior is one of the lowest possible.  What you are saying is very similar if not the same as "Well everyone else cheats on their taxes so I might as well' or 'Well everyone else joined a gang so I might as well'.  This type of thinking is very close to what has allowed some of the worst atrocities in human history to be carried out in plain view.  Not to dramatize the point.

Personally I'd rather see ads for porn than IGE.  Of course I am not Christian, Conservative, Inhibited, Prude or Politically Correct (And I like Porn Tongue).  The one thing I do agree with is that as long as Ron pays the bills its his decision to make.  I understand the financial constraints of keeping this site up are considerable, and the pressure to keep it going (like in any small business) could lead one to take actions that they themselves would not prefer.  But there are no inconsequential choices, there is a reason the easy path seems so.

Your presumptions are accurate, for the GT wifi community to work we all need to add each other reciprocally.  What I'm not clear on is why you don't have room.  Is it because you have a lot of other firends on there already?  The friends list in game is 4 pages long; I've added everyone on here and then some and still have about 1.5 pages free.  But feel free to add me and share your info in the sticky thread.  I'll visit smile

I hope you know I'm not trying to nail you on anything Ron.  I was just very surprised to see that there.  Although I largely lurk here, I like this community and want to see it thrive.

So I'm curious... if no other advertiser banners have generated revenue (presumably for lack of clicks) what makes IGE more attractive?  Do they pay a flat advertising fee in addition to per hit commision?  I imagine something along those lines is what makes it more attractive...?

Also I've never really understood why these independent forums don't cross advertise for each other... especially since the demise of GG.  Wouldn't everyone benefit if say GT, OO, QT3 and now perhaps BC as well just gave each other free homepage mini-banners in a mutually reciprocal agreement?  Wouldn't that theoretically make every site's sponsor advertising more lucrative?

Well, I would argue that by accepting funds from that private interest the owner implicitly endorses the cause.

I think the bigger issue is that (whether they do it or not) Blizzard has specifically stated that anyone who purchases gold for real world cash will have their account suspended.  So...  This normally integrous site and administration, in running that ad, are advocating a service that can in fact cause the reader/purchaser to lose both their purchase and their account... and the site is partly supporting itself from a share of those marginally ill-begotten funds.

Although I see your point Ron... your argument is similar in my mind, to a starving person stealing bread from a grocery store.  "Sure its wrong, but would you rather see me starve?"

Erm, Im pretty sure that wasn't there before but I may be wrong.  Is GT deliberately advertising for MMO gold farmers or is that a distributed ad?

I just got a DLink DI-524 this week ($29.95 after MIR).  It appears to work perfectly, the catch is that Circuit City had mostly Ver. A's for sale but a very few of the box's said Ver. D.  This is the shipping firmware and the A is not compatible.. though C and D are.  It says on every box though, and the Version A's may be flashable to C or D, Dlink provides firmware upgrades so maybe.

And on the AC front, I was visited today by Coop, Addy, Xian and Scott and a good time was had by all.  Gave away two dressers today, Ill order a couple more tomorrow if anyone else wants to swing by for one.  Redd was in Utopia today and well... I don't like him... not so much.

All my fruit trees seemed to have sprouted so with any luck I'll have every native fruit type later this week.  Roald announced he's moving out today and had all his bags packed so one of you can expect him soon.  Also I think Addy has a bit of a crush on Mathilda the cow.  Shhhh... don't tell anyone. slywink

I really am loving the viral way content gets spread.  Its such a brilliantly simple idea I'm amazed Ive never seen it before.  But its so great that simply by connecting with people and/or visiting them the game is 'leaking' clothes, constellations, neighbors etc, while you are unaware and otherwise occupied.  I have clothes in my store designed by people not even on my friend list.  Excited for more surprises.  Does everyone have a fishing tourney this Sunday?

Well today was my first day of AC:WW 'Online' and wow it really adds a dimension to this.  Within a bout a minute of opening my DS today Addy (TML) came to visit, and brought an apple.  He bought a new wall in my Nook's and came to check out my pad.  Then we went to his town for a bit, when Xian (Depward) came to play too and we used teamwork to uproot a tree so that Addy could sprout a new fruit tree in that spot.  Addy even gave me his sweet Roman Helmet, and said he'd order another from himself from Nook's catalog.

I left cherries in every town I visited, and managed to get apples, oranges, peaches and pears to plant back home.  I met Orph in Blarney (I think) and he said he'd been looking for a shovel all week... I recalled that Nook had a spare one for sale today and invited him back. When I asked about exchanging friend codes he showed me that if you meet a stranger in someones town, you can add them automatically through the friends menu, without having to discuss the specifics. Very Good feature.

So Orph came and got his shovel, and we discussed fishing, so I told him to go check out the aquarium in my museum, and he was very impressed with number of fish I'd donated already... The place is almost full smile

Later on this evening I turned on the game for some normal 'offline' play and I noticed 3 new constellations in my sky, "The Cube", "Its Grasping Arm", and one that was a 'dipper' (don't recall the name atm).  Then as I made the rounds looking for fossils I saw a bottled message on my beach.  It was from Clay (who I had no contact with today aside from him adding me to his contacts) and the message read "gamingtrend.com".  Then I ran into Blanca the mysterious cat, who had a really cool angry face drawn by gim from ~home~.  I gave her a new skullface and sent her on her way.

So thats one day of ACWW via Wifi.  wow.  I sure hope that the game really has enough in there and Nintendo keeps seeding more to make everyday that interesting.  Even if not, that was good fun.

Yeah I was on Argent Dawn most of yesterday evening and it was a mess.  I was having an awesome time, and had paired up with a fellow dwarf for a long questing but eventually the whole thing was too unstable for us to continue.  Aside from realm crashes, player rollbacks... the database lag was so bad that the game couldn't even tell that my Hunter had tamed a pet.  I had it, but I couldn't see its mood and it wouldn't come up in my Character sheet.  Too bad we were having such a blast.  ArcBlade the Dwarf Warrior I salute you wherever you are!

It's painfully obvious that you all hate -Lord Ebonstone- for his freedom -- his freedom to take aggressive pre-emptive action against people like bimbo15 -- and all this liberal hand-wringing over so-called "civil discourse" makes me sick.

74  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Chessmaster question on: December 28, 2004, 09:36:35 PM
I would say that CMX is not a good way to learn openings.  As Gorath has suggested, more 'secular' books or instructional videos will fit the bill more adequately.  The opening reference in CMX is a bit too vague for anyone who doesn't already grasp the fundamentals of chess openings and the types of positions that each is trying to create.

Honestly I've seen some VERY strong players who lack any formal opening book knowledge.  Just starting with 1.e4, or 1.d4 or responding in kind can be enough for some serious mileage.  One can play a tough game simply by adhering to tactical and strategic fundamentals, playing for control of the center, and patiently responding to the opponent.

That said, the Audio lectures in the program are OUTSTANDING.  Just the narrated Waitzkin games are worth the purchase price IMO.

I do think Martin's acting has gotten a bit cliched, but his writing is top-notch.  I was in a production of "Picasso at the Lapin Agile" a stage play he wrote in 1999 (I played Elvis), and its brilliant.  He actually came to see the production and was very humble and gracious when I met him.

Crossposted from OO:

I'm gonna go ahead and give this a "Wow"!

As noted above the box doesn't even approach passing a lift test so whatever.

The game is gritty and atmospheric to no end. Graphically, I'd say HL2>Riddick>Doom3. Riddick's indoor environments actually look better than HL2 IMO but nothing can beat HL2's outdoor stuff. Also the faces just aren't up to Source caliber though they come close. Riddick uses WAY more shaders than HL2 in Dx8 mode and its lovely.

Audio is outstanding and makes terrific use of 5.1, Voice acting is mostly spot on (Quite a few F-bombs though so hide the kiddies). The story is compelling, I started it up "just for a test" and 2 hours went by in a blink. Really my only compunction is that its gonna be over too soon. Even a couple hours in I can feel the ending on its way. But Max Payne 2 had that issue also and its still one of my favorite action narratives. For my $30 I'd rather get a completely enjoyable 10 hours than 20-30 drawn out repetative ones.

Honestly I would have given this game a hard pass if it wasn't for Greg K. absolutely praising it, but he didn't let me down. I guess one last thing worth mentioning... If you don't like Vin Diesel don't bother, you'll be looking at him A LOT.
