Haven't looked here for awhile but I've not ignored any challenges.  Was in "vacation" mode for a couple weeks in March though. Sorry.  Still playing, still accepting all challenges. smile

... and that's why computers destroy us at chess.  It is a solid state affair.  It does seem simpler, and is very human to want to see the chess game as a narrative, as indeed it certainly is some respects.  However, the decision of what is the best current move relates only to the current position and our silly human attachments to that narrative often lead us to make poor moves.  It is good practice to be able to look at a position and decide the best move without knowing how the position was arrived at.

One of us. one of us!  Come on in the, water's great wonderpug. I don't know how long I can maintain my current obsession level but till then chess, chess, chess.  When I'm not with my gf or playing online, I'm studying chess or looking for games at a coffeehouse... so much chess.  Wish I didn't take ten years off, I'd be like awesome now! smile

Hi all, sort of a crosspost, sort of not.  I've been playing a lot of chess lately and really enjoying it.  For a long time most of the free online options kinda sucked.  I've been playing on chess.com and its got a great interface, chess forums, and articles and trainers.  Its also got free ranked live and correspondence chess.  I think its really great and I want more opponents in correspondence so I can improve.  I'm playing as earbiter.

If you decide to sign up and want to thank me for pointing it out, here's my referral link: http://www.chess.com?ref_id=6607830

Let's play some Chess.

Also Grudbegriff recommended chesstempo.com over on OO and it is a great site for free drills and trainers.

Here are their intentions for 1.2 patch:

http://forums.riftgame.com/showthread.php?165691-New-Info-Updates-to-PvP-Souls-Crafting-and-more!

Here are the reparations for today's debacle:
Quote from: Trion
We're going to assume that if you are an active subscriber you were intending to participate in the final stages.

1) Operating on that assumption, later this week everyone will be receiving an in-game mail with the River of Souls Event Reward Pack containing:

Symbol of Purity This item starts a quest you can complete to obtain

    250 Otherworldly Sourcestone
1x - Purified Treasure Cache Contains a random chance of obtaining one of the special world drop event rewards from the day of the event
Common Grave Goods Bag -Unique 20 Slot Bag (NEW ITEM)
Uncommon - Shroud of Anti-Life Lorn non combat Polymorph
Rare Nimble Spectral Horse 90% Speed Mount
Ultra Rare Swift Spectral Warhorse 110% Speed Mount
Shadetouched Weapon Cache The starter item for the Rare Death weapon quests. You can choose whichever level appropriate one you'd like.
The following two Achievements, since not everyone who was (or wanted to be) present was able to obtain them.
        Grim Hero
        Grim Protector

2) The achievement for kneeling to Alsbeth will remain available in her incarnation inside the River of Souls.

3) Additionally, we're also going to continue the Otherworldly Sourcestone drops for the next few days, for those who haven't yet finished off their collections and would care to.

4) And since the question has come up quite a few times -- the ability to complete the quests from the Shadetouched Weapon Cache will continue, such that you're always able to finish them.

We have a sizeable Defiant Guild on Estrael.  At least 14 unique players...  Not sure where we'll be at for endgame but for now we have a very pleasant bunch having fun on a fairly regular basis.

Incoming patch 8am PST:

Quote from: Trion
Hotfix #14

WORLD EVENT
* Rings from the event merchants are now properly labeled as 'Unique'. These rings were previously set to be Unique but the text was not appearing on their tooltips.
* Added a display for the level requirements to Shadetouched Weapons Cache quest starting items. The level requirements existed previously but were not displayed on the item tooltip.
* Death Rift: Eternal Souls: You know that dragon that had wings but liked to walk a lot? He flies now!
* The Battle for Freemarch zone event now rewards Otherworldly Sourcestone for participation while the River of Souls event is underway.
* Adjusted the stage objectives for the River of Souls event Rift, 'Pride Before the Fall'. Added better messaging to the stages involving the Soothing Stone Light.

GENERAL
* Fixed the Normal Practice Dummy having the defenses of a Boss Practice Dummy.
* Guild Perk: Planar Protection: Fixed a bug that caused this perk to consume Banner reagents.
* Fixed a bug where the Sir or Dame title would occasionally not be sent to eligible characters.
* Corrected the stats on the essence 'Elusive Prey' to have Melee Critical Hit instead of Spell Critical Hit.

ZONES
* Fixed issues in high-level zones that could cause Invasions to not spawn. This should help with zone events not spawning their Invasions as well.

SANCTUM
* Scotty's Induction Ceremony for the Runeguard will no longer be interrupted by hostile creatures appearing in the same area.

SILVERWOOD
* The rare spawn mob, 'Pandora', can now be killed by Defiants.

DUNGEONS AND RAIDS
* Over 100 new item drops have been added to Expert Dungeons and Raids!

DARKENING DEEPS
* Expert: Scarn: Fixed the fires so they stay stuck on the bone piles.
* Expert: Scarn: Molten Phlegm effect is now cleansable. If your buddy is on fire, put them out!
* Expert: Scarn: Reduced area of Scarn's frontal cleave so it shouldn't catch players who are visibly outside of the front area of effect.

GREENSCALE'S BLIGHT [Raid]
* Duke Letareus, Infiltrator Johlen, and Oracle Aleria now drop 3 items when killed.
* Prince Hylas now drops 4 items when killed.
* Greenscale now drops 4 items when killed, and additional Relic items have been added to the possible drop list.
* Resolved a rare edge case where the instance would crash during a raid wipe-triggered Lord Greenscale reset.

AUDIO
* Addressed a bunch of audio issues with combat sounds being very quiet or not playing at all.
* The Lute purchased from Artifact rewards has more even-volume sound effects.
* More audio volume-level fixes for sounds playing too loudly (level up, anyone?) or too quiet.

CRAFTING
* A system fix to Unique-Equip crafted items that made them look for the base item when checking the Unique-Equip status went in with the 1.1 patch. This made identical rings or weapons with different Augment or Rune types unable to be equipped at the same time (or re-equipped if you already had them on a character and removed one or both). We are taking a look at the current Unique-Equip crafted items affected by this to see if further adjustments to their power are needed in order to keep them desirable.
* You can no longer close opened crafting reward containers and lose items left inside.
* Quests from dropped Cloth starters (The Caress of Cloth, Textile Texture, and From a Humble Scrap) can once again be completed and lead to the follow-up provided by the turn-in NPC.
* Calamitous Runes and Ravaging Runeshards now provide Spell Critical Hit. Devastating Runes and Destructive Runeshards now give Melee Critical Hit.

SETTINGS
* Added a self-cast modifier key dropdown under Settings -> Combat. This allows you to set a key that will always try to self-cast an ability if that key is held while the ability is used (such as setting up 'Alt' to allow 'Alt+1' to attempt to self-cast the ability in hotbar slot 1).
* There are now two sliders to scale the size of player and NPC nameplates under Options -> Name.
* Video recording: A bit rate slider has been added to the recording options window that will affect the quality and size of the video created.

CLIENT/SERVER
* Coin lock should be behaving better for players who also run VPN software on their machines.
* Server performance improvements.

man, I'm having an epic gank day in stillmoor today.  A little advice to mages, don't use all your mana spamming aoe looking for a rogue, then he can kill you and you can't fight back.  Don't wait before drinking to get back mana/hp after a pull, even if you have friends around.  I can sap 1-2 people, blind another, kill you, then vanish and all your friends can do is say 'sorry bro'. slywink

I also found that sapping someone when they are collecting a quest item interupts it.  Bonus points if you do it before revealing you're in the area so they aren't sure for a second why it stopped collecting.

(and yes, I am that guy, just ask Blackadar.  It was his guildies today as well, tell Lilith and Schadenfreude that Hark says hey!  With his/her name, they can't really complain either)

Hark, what rogue build are you using?  I'm using a ranged build, but it's not too effective for 1on1 pvp.

My name isn't Hark but Assassin/RS is the shiznit for melee rogues.  I'm 32/24 atm... planning to be 40/26... Wargus has a similar build and we make a fierce duo.  There is something to be said for going deep assassin but the abilities from RS really flesh the whole thing out.  I feel pretty unstoppable and if/when I get jacked Shadow Shift -> Slip Away = bye-bye.  I can post a sample build if you like.

This may change at 50, but for now this is my favorite build.. pve, pvp or otherwise.

With a riftstalker I could have another 10% but, that would only be temporary while porting.

You really do need to focus on upgrading your planar focus ASAP.  It makes a really big difference.

I had actually bought a new focus but forgot to slot it as I was very tired when I shot that.  Makes me glad to know that I'm only trailing a standing lvl 50 by 100 pts of crit though.  Cheers.

keep in mind that I focus on End and not phys crit on all my gear and essences though slywink  Only my talents are crit spec with ranger/assassin.  You could easily have a much higher crit chance if you focus on it, I just find that in pvp hp is needed.

Oh yes, I will. smile  I plan on playing Sin/RS endgame and +crit is the key.  You gotta make those incoming bursts count. >smile

I'm also not quite sure how you pulled that I want easy mode out of my last two posts on the subject, but no, that isn't what I want, especially considering I have another post a page back saying it was broken before.  I still think it could use some tweaking, as in minor adjustments.

Oh! Play a pure NB! Its argued they have the best sustained melee dps for rogues.  I've played both my rogues as NB and its a very nice power set.  actually do NB with 5/5 Ranger/Sin for the 10% crit bonus! >smile

Though honestly NB/ with 13 RS for the heal and 5 sin for crits and puncture is a much more survivable PvE build.
24  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Rift on: April 01, 2011, 05:25:04 AM
I've admittedly not played much these last two days but the stealth changes seem a little too strong form your description.  I'd agree that last week assassin stealth was easy mode compared to any other toon for quest completion and gathering mats and artys.

That said... I do think Incap should be viable CC.  Seeing as you can only have 1 mob incapped, needed to do it to your target makes the basic rogue 2-fer impossible.  You can not fight one mob directly while his escort stands sapped if you need to sap to get your jagg off.

I'm in the middle.  Was a bit too easy before, and this sounds too strict.

probably because things don't just suddenly stop being the way they are because changes are coming.  Short of stopping playing at all that is.

Also because even after 1.1 pushes live, rogue maximum MDPS is highly situational.  In PvP you almost never get the optimal attack off so even with the balances coming in Sin alone still cannot guarantee damage output without an ability to always be in position.  Thus my recommendation for heavier RS investment.  No Fang carrier ever escapes from me... EVER.  I break cc, I teleport after they do... I stun... I port in from stealth so they never even knew I was in the game... and I bleed them dry even if I've been killed in the process. Sin/RS has HUGE advantages, it just won't be toe to toe melee....

he does have a point though Chess.  At level 50 melee rogues change fairly drastically in effectiveness.  I felt very powerful in pvp up to 50, never had much problem with anyone.  Then at 50 I still felt pretty good for awhile.  Then as people got geared in level 50 gear from expert dungeons and prestige ranks it all went to shit.  Rogues don't scale well compared to the other classes at that point.

There are clearly some issues with 50+ prestige gear and the fact that PvE raid gear trumps it by far.  A rogue will never be able to melee toe to toe with a War dps, or a cleric and I don't think they should.  My reason for endorsing the deeper RS investment is the versatility it gives the rogue:  Mobility, stealth and teleport are the advantages the rogue has why not maximize them?  Since with current design you just can't be the melee powerhouse people think Sin should be, why not look at the options?  These are the skills that bring the rogue back into balance if you actually invest in and use them.  Sin is not a primary melee-er, you are a ganker by definition.

(and I think we both know having a point doesn't not justify being a dismissive asshat in an open discussion.)

I can't help but reccomend you use a role to try a more even split between the two.  At 37 I'm 32/17 Sin/RS and about to respec.  You can make up for a lot of loss of burst dmg by investing in your "after phase shift" abilities.  Once the burst from Instincts/Jagged/Puncture/Impale drops off you just port to their back and get the massive bonus to crit and keep it coming.  Not to mention that a perma/speed stealth Sin with 4 teleports is a monster in PvP.  I almost took out a 44 ranger dueling in Meridian square.  He only got me because he could see through my stealth and broke my initial burst... but he couldn't keep me snared or off his back.  Sin/RS is my hands down favorite spec for both PvE and PvP.  Cheers.

Instead of a big burst damage, with good sustained damage...we are a weakened version of most Warrior without the plate armour and survivability.
Why would I be wanted for Dungeons or Raids?

I'm gonna hang in there with it, haven't done much PvP yet, but I will.

A big job ahead for the Dev's in the area of balance and synergy with the souls.

The way rifts have worked you got credit for however many actions you executed inside, period.  The most efficient way to get a gold contribution score  (still is til the patch) is to stand there and use an instant zero cooldown self buff every gcd for the whole rift while everyone else fights.  Long cast heals at appropriate times just cant compete with a dps rogue launching an attack every single gcd.  This is why they are fixing it.

Either way its 20 champions and some runes for $20 minus $10 free riot points.

35  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Learning guitar: Best way to do it? on: September 06, 2009, 01:47:58 AM
I think everyone learns differently and has different natural aptitudes.  If you've previously played bass you know what you are getting into at least, and if you can sight read sheet music you don't have much to fear.  The hardest part in that case in getting started will likely be your form.  There are likely going to be chord shapes that feel very unnatural for quite awhile and you want to make sure that you learn to hold the neck properly because bad habits really don't go away. (I still play with my thumb hooked over the top of the neck which is nice for certain fingerings but is basically a really bad habit otherwise.)  I learned by playing and singing songs I liked, at first they sounded like crap and when they started sounding the way I thought they should I started branching out.  You won't be able to improvise too well on a guitar until your muscle memory is fixed anyway.  I honestly couldn't 'play what was in my head' until after like ten years, but I've seen guys get that good in four months too.  Since you read sheet scales are a great idea, just take some time to remind yourself where each note is on the fretboard and the patterns of duplicates and octaves.  When you play songs though don't try to play the sheet its normally a piano line anyway, play the chords and focus on the clarity of the chord and whether your strumming is producing the rhythm you mean it to.  Hope that helps.

See Last Post.

Server is closed, it was mostly full for several hours straight tons of ladder points.  Will post again next time.

X-post smile

In case any one wants to play I'll have a trackmania nations server running for the next 3-4 hours or so. Moliere and I will be in for probably a couple of hours anyway. If you are curious you can get Nations free at http://trackmania.com and be up and playing in a couple minutes. The game has digital control for gas and brake but and analog control is enabled and best for steering.

I have United Forever and would love to compete at it, but for now I'll keep to hosting the free content.

The server is called Octopus Overlords, no password in case a few racers can draw a bigger pool. It is 5 minute, Time Attack, with Ladder Play enabled. Standard Nadeo Blue Nations Stadium Tracks.

Come on in. If it looks empty its because I'm spectating, I'll hop in if anyone else does slywink
