Wait a second....so you don't have to *pay* for your backgrounds!?   (Are you listening Microsoft?)

Seriously, I pushed a "Don't Feed the Metroids" warning sign to my 360.

supposedly you can do custom wallpapers on the 360 if you have Vista on your PC (and maybe XP, but all I remember seeing mentioned was Vista).  of course if I what I think you mean by 'pushed' is the same thing then you've already figured it out.

I finished Jerusalem (2nd kill) last night and was heading to Acre before calling it a night. I was like "screw the speed limit" so I just galloped full tilt from waypoint to waypoint purposefully reigning chaos on civilians and just killing any guards around when I stopped to do the waypoint. Not exactly stealthily keeping the Creed a secret, but quite a bit of fun! smile

About the guards in the Kingdom...is that why they attack you; because you are not using the blend button when on the horse?  I wondered why when I first went in there they attacked me on sight.

if you move past them on horseback at any pace faster than your blend pace they'll come after you.  it's profiling I tell you!

TW was fun, but it did suffer from that awkward dialogue. "Forsooth, thou art a knave so die!" which typically characterizes E(uro)RPGs. I lost interest in TW due to its rambling nature (same with Oblivion so maybe its just me). Witcher keeps things on track and lets me move quickly if i want. I finally got so bored of being in Act III last night that i just pushed forward to Act IV, leaving a bunch of quests behind.

yeah, TW did have some painful dialouge and was alot more open ended, but it's also one of the few open ended games I've finished (it joins the ranks of Daggerfall and Ultima's VI, VII & IX).

Far Cry 2 has absolutely zero to do with Crytek.  It's developed internally by Ubisoft and the developers have no problems changing stuff about Far Cry they didn't like (ie the main character, no mutants, etc).  Far Cry 2 may be great or it may suck but I wouldn't ascribe Crytek's development tendencies to the title.

well at least that's a ray of sunshine in the games development.

After Gothic III, I am wary of European RPGs.

That was my chief hesitation with The Witcher as well but no worries on that score.  It's amazingly well put together.

Yeah I have to second that.  The Witcher is much more polished and the localization is done much better.  I think most US players, were they unaware of the games origins, would not suspect it was a Euro game.  There are a few places where the conversations are awkward and its probably due to translation issues, but they are fairly uncommon.

Thirdeded. My opinion of Euro games was very low as well, but between Witcher and World In Conflict they've done a better job than MANY domestic companies. Don't let that hold you back.

The world feels like Medieval Europe (with elves and dorfs of course), but doesn't have any cultural issues in its execution. Actually I really enjoy the dark, gritty (and dare i say teh SEX!) environment, something you don't typically see in mainstream US games. It really is refreshing and engrossing.

Don't forget Two Worlds, which was pretty fun too.

it gets that bad towards the end?  crap.  I haven't had much chance to play with everyting else but to hear that they fucked up the end of the game like they did with Far Cry puts this game on the list of ones to pass around to my friends so they don't waste money on it instead of making them buy their own copies.  It also makes me wary of Far Cry 2 and their 'promise' that the story won't take a totally off the wall turn towards the end.

I could still play it and enjoy it, even with the load times, but I have so much other stuff right now I think its best to save this for when things get a bit slower.

well, it sounds like you might have a wait anyways.  they're saying the ETA for 1.2 is 'sometime before X-Mas'.......

so, is it just me or is anyone else finding the enemy AI lacking?  I'll get into a fight, jump up on the roof, wait for them to climb up and just whack them as they repeatedly try and climb up, or I'll find a couple of guards, assassinate one without the other noticing, hit blend, wait for the other guy to go 'someone killed bob!  oh no! ok, I spent my 5 seconds looking around, let me go back to the same exact spot as be-urk!'.  Heck, I walked up to a guy standing in front 6 or 7 other soldiers, killed him, and then walked away as they other guys slowly walked up to do their 5 second look and then return to formation without the captain standing in front of them.  It seems about the only people I can't just walk up to and kill are the Templars, and with them I'll just do the roof trick until they're dead.  No roof nearby, OK, I'll run away a bit, let them catch up, run a bit more, and eventually I'll find a building to climb.

OK, the patch came out just today.  Makes me think they knew about the issues and decided to release it anyways.  Anyhow, I'm kinda surprised at how nice the game looks.  The only graphics option is screen resolution, but the graphics themselves aren't too shabby.  Not massive next gen but still serviceable.  Here's some screenies from the second level (made using the lovely free version of FRAPS, converted from BMP to JPG):

We had been talking about this when it was first announced, at a military games forum I hang out at. I'm puzzled though. It was announced as a "value priced" title but it's going for $39.99.  saywhat I guess they meant in relation to the full-price console versions.

supposedly Activision decided not to make it a budget game, but from what I've seen it still feels like one.  The manual is a whole 3 pages, the menus are very basic, as are the options, there's no actual intro movie and the start menu folder has a link to Activision Value.  from the gameplay videos it looked like it was worth 30 or 40 bucks, but now I have to wait for the Vista patch to find out.

plus the console versions are $59.99

Also, for those that don't know, this is the rare game where blood is disabled by default.

Yeah, no go on the Shift-key shortcut for me either. I tried the shortcuts for a while, but I found I prefer using the middle-mouse radial wheel. I've gotten pretty good at it.

Thanks for the heads up about the blood.

In the last year Gamestop stock is up 112%.  In the last five years, it's up over 450%.  The only real way that you'd see them go away is if the next round of consoles go completely digital and all games come straight from an online service of Nintendo/MS/Sony.  But I think it will take another two console generations at least to get rid of physical media.  If Gamestop goes bankrupt in the next five years, it means very bad things for the gaming industry as a whole.
