so, anyone got anything exciting?  me, I'm probably going to end up at a small get together over at a friends house where there will be food and booze.  Unfortunately all the women that will show up will either be married or dating a friend, but this year I really don't feel like putting up with crowds of strangers.  Tonight I shall also finally be exposed to Guitar Hero (and maybe Rock Band) so there should be some fun times.

I'll toss a couple of questions into the mix here:

Do the controllers recharge when you have them plugged in via the USB cable and turn the system off like the 360 rechargeable battery does?

and

Does the Blu Ray player always lose track of where you are on a DVD when you turn the system off?

Rock Band brought nothing new.  There were already many games in Japan and in US Arcades that had you beating on drums, singing into a mic, etc...

Same for Portal, for which the technology has been around for a while such as in Prey, all they did was give you control.  Unreal engine has had portal technology for a long time now, almost way back to the original Unreal 1.

I can't think of the last time I was at an arcade so I didn't know the drums and singing stuff was out there already (hell, I didn't think arcades existed anymore).  As for Portal, other than Prey I can't think of another game that uses portals in a portable way like that.

they story just didn't interest me in those 4- visually they were great though.  I have Ratatouille on my list, but right now it's only to see how awesome it looks in Blu Ray.

The problem with the used games/DVD business is that none of the money in that industry actually goes to the people that produced the product.  You may be paying 90% of retail price, but 0% of that goes to support the creators.  It's all profit for shitty businesses like GameStop and Blockbuster.

that's why I rarely buy used from Gamestop.  I'll trade in my games there, but the used stuff gets bought at a local place that's usually 15 bucks below GS on used copies of newer games.  Plus when I get new games from them cheap I can usually finish them and turn around to trading them into GS towards new releases and not lose much money in the process.

GameTrailers has recently released their PS3 GOTY along with the 5 nominees.

Uncharted wasn't even a nominee.  How ridiculous is that!?

from what I've played that is pretty ridiculous. Honestly, they should have kicked Oblivion off that list and given a totally new game it's moment in the spotlight.  heck, the only game on that list I have any desire to play on the PS3 is Ratchet & Clank- all the rest I already have for the PC or are Rock Band.

Having a hard copy of a console game or DVD is a must for me.

Why?

pretty much what DarkEl said, plus once I'm done with the game or the DVD starts gathering dust I can trade them in for other stuff.  Plus I can get the used stuff for a fairly reasonable price, where as no hard copy means no trade ins, thus killing the used game/DVD business.

Where does this come from - I guess it's purely generational?

I guess I'd qualify as a techno-nerd (I am in my 30's though), but I'd be happy if I never have to touch a piece of physical media ever again. Gross.

the only things I don't care about not having a physical copy of anymore are PC games and music CD's.  Having a hard copy of a console game or DVD is a must for me.

I tried the DS Lite, and after the initial wow factor wore off it ended up collecting dust and the other day got traded away for the first 4 Harry Potter movies on Blu-Ray.  Seeing as Gamestop is only offering 50 bucks for them I came out ahead by skipping them.
