I'll say this. $400 to play games = no sale, IMHO. So it plays blu-ray movies. Its still marketed as a game machine.

But $350 to play games = sale?

I can't understand this line of thinking. Is $50 such a huge gap?  That's less than the price of a game.  That's less (or the same) as a years worth of Live.

I'm trying to figure out where he said he'd pay $350.....

Well I'm going on the assumption that if he doesn't have a PS3 then he probably has a 360.  However I could be completely wrong! smile

I preordered a 360 from Gamestop in April of the year it launched, way in advance of the November release date.  Gamestop not only didn't have one on launch day, but they didn't call me until the end of February of the next year - almost an entire *year* after I had preordered it.

I've never preordered anything again...

heh, I pre-order mine in May of that year and was one of only 4 or 6 who got theirs on launch day at the Gamestop near the place I was currently living.

And it's not about speeding up the load times, either. From PA (yes, I realize that they aren't exactly the best source to quote), they basically say that while the load times are like '50%' shorter, that 50% means that they go from 2 seconds down to 1 when it comes to the 360 vs PS3 versions.

Just saying - "I compared the 2 versions" doesn't mean the guys at PA have the slightest clue what they are talking about (and increasingly, Tycho appears to be more and more clueless).

Indeed-my stock in the PA guys has dropped considerably over the past couple months.  Still make kick ass cartoons but I'll always take anything they say with a lump of salt.

about the only time I read their front page anymore is to get the backstory on the comic, and that's usually summed up in the first few lines.
60460  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 360 vs PS3 2008 console war-the *other* front on: February 18, 2008, 01:55:17 AM
one thing to take into account is this:  now that the format war is settled I'm sure we'll be seeing companies other than Sony trying to sell Blu Ray players, and what better way for them to get sales of their product instead of the PS3 than to make cheaper BD players?  Amazon already has some on sale for 50 bucks cheaper than a PS3, and it won't be long until we see that gap widen to 100 or more (hell, at a 200 buck price point I'd consider getting a standalone player myself to save wear and tear on the PS3 if there were enough games for the PS3 that I'd be playing at the time).  If someone has no interest in console games but wants hi def they'll go for the cheapest player instead of the PS3.

Why is it that I have to click to see the price?  I read their explanation of it but it didn't really explain anything to me. Oh our prices our so low that we don't want to tell you what they are!

yeah, manufacturers MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) policy is really annoying.  basically, a company like Sony or Sharp (gotta mention another to avoid cries of Sony hater anymore icon_wink) tries to level the playing field for retailers by saying that if the item is being sold under a certain price they just can't shout it out to the world- the consumer needs to actively ask what the price is on their own.  In a way it's good as it stops big stores like Target or Walmart from advertising a crazy sales price on something (like a new release DVD) that they know they can afford to take losses to steal away the competition's customers.

The HD DVD player is not obtrusive, so I'm perfectly fine with it living in my entertainment system for quite some time.  And like it or not, I won't be watching any BR movies until the prices come down.  I'm simply not paying $400 for a movie player.  I didn't do it with HD, and I'm not doing it with BR, even though the war is over, so I may as well enjoy what I have.

they've already got some Blu Ray on sale for under 400 bucks, so you might not have to wait long.

Not a bad price for a BR player.  Now if only the the PS3 would go on sale like that!

I own that player, it's a damn fine machine and thats a great price.

actually there's two separate Blu Ray players linked there, one on Blu and the other on Ray.  The first is a Sharp and the second is a Sony.

Mass Effect.  Lost two hours of running around the Citadel because I

Spoiler for Hiden:
walked past the door of the seedy bar.  I just wanted to scope out the area outside the bar, except when I got 20 feet from the door, it popped open and thugs started shooting.  I took cover to get my bearings, and one of my guys decides to take cover by standing in the open door, I try to get a bead on some of the thugs, and get shot up myself.  Turns out that the last autosave was two hours earlier, and I hadn't manually saved because I wasn't expecting to get into any fights yet.

It's crap like that that makes me stop playing a game for the night, and sometimes it leaves such a bad taste in my mouth that I never go back to the game.

so, the game threw a surprise at you and you never want to be surprised again?  Tongue

still, that sucks.  I swear the game had an autosave right before that portion though.  I know I had to replay that portion a few times and for some reason had a save right near the entrance to the bar area.

50% is still 50%.  For that game it might not be so big of a difference, but a couple of years down the road when games are putting more demand on the systems, that might be a difference of 20 seconds vs 10 seconds.

and the PS3 moves one step closer to being a PC.  About the only thing that this will do to affect me is to make me play less games at the same time.  Of course, since I'm only buying used copies of games for my PS3 I doubt there will be any one time where I have enough to worry about filling up my HD.
