1321  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 2k5 Post Game Commentary - CG/GG Games Only Please on: July 25, 2004, 05:03:02 PM
Naednek and I have had some intense online battles, the best of which was a game we played last night between my Dolphins (with an unretired Ricky Williams) taking on his Seahawks. With the game tied 10 all and the clock winding down in the 4th quarter, he completed a pass down to the 5 yard line. Game over, right? Well, fortunately for me, he had forgotten that he didn't have any timeouts remaining and the seconds thankfully ticked away, sending us into overtime. There, with a heavy dose of Ricky runs, I set up a pass over the top of his D stacked on the line on a 3rd and 1 and sprinted to the endzone with David Boston.

I'm loving playing this game on-line, even when I lose.  biggrin

demonigizer and i just had a tough defensive game in the buffalo rain. i ended up prevailing 13-3, sealing it when jamal lewis broke through for a TD run near the end of the game. the whole game was great fun, and i love how the statistics are saved instantly. a league would kick some serious butt.

ps demonigizer, i added you to my friend's list. i hope that's okay smile

I just played my first online game tonight against naednek after finally getting live set up this afternoon. I jumped out to a 10-0 lead with the Ravens over his eagles. But after an AWFUL pass interference call ( ) that got him down to the 5 yard line and set up a field goal at the end of the half, things just started to fall apart for me. I think I threw 3 picks in the second half (I was Kyle Boller, after all), 2 of which he returned for TDs.

I ended up getting smoked 38-17. All in all, though, it was great fun. I look forward to playing more CG/GGs online.  biggrin

I posted this over at GoneGold:

Well, I FINALLY have the game in my grubby little hands. I just played a half on all-pro difficulty to get a feel for it, and I have to say, I am not disappointed (except, perhaps, in my in-game skills). I chose to play with the Ravens so I could see just how much the unstoppable running back problem of 2k4 was addressed. Well, I played on all-pro and Lewis gained 34 yards on 14 carries. Part of that is because I suck, but I can definitely see that tackling is much improved. As for the rest of the in-game experience, it is really spectacular. The graphics on my HDTV are the best I've seen in a sports game (especially in the replays and close-ups), the gameplay feels much like 2k4 but with subtle helpful tweaks, and the presentation, as others have mentioned, is incredible. Some interesting things I noticed that others may not have talked about yet:

1) there is a "favorites" formation in your play calling screen that automatically stores the plays you use the most often

2) there is now momentum while running. this was especially noticeable on kickoff returns. no longer can you barrel ahead full-steam and then turn on a dime. the running game is also more challenging as a result.

3) there are TONS of cool new cutscenes, full of voiceovers by players and coaches. for example, i went for it on 4th and 1 and ran up the middle with jamal lewis. i barely made it over the first down line, and the measurement crew came out while lewis hung out nearby yealling "c'mon, it's a first down!". then when the chains showed it was a first down, lewis started pumping his fist saying "yeah, baby, yeah!". good stuff.

ok, i need to get back to playing now. i really suck. at halftime i was down 21-3 to the redskins. portis had 70 yards at half with a TD and coles had a 40 TD reception. i'm really bad at this point, but hey, i haven't even looked at the manual yet, plus this is my first time playing a sports game on the xbox. i'm not used to the controller yet.

Since then, I set up the stadium music to play "Baby Got Back" when I score a touchdown. I just scored on a 30 yard TD pass from Manning to Harrison. On cue, the music started. It even sounds like it's coming out of the stadium speakers. Too cool.

I think the best hope for both Ralph and I playing in the league from the same XBOX live account will be to hope that there are no Panthers-Ravens games scheduled this year.

Thanks, Eco. That would rock.

Have you noticed if the administrator is allowed to set the league schedule? If so, then the easiest solution would be to just make it so Raplh and I don't play in a head-to-head matchup.

Is it possible for two members of the league to live in the same house? If need be, we can just play our head-to-head games offline and then have the loser forfeit. If so, I'll be in also. My bastard brother already took the Panters, so I guess I'll take the Vikings. If someone else wants them though (as in, they've always been your favorite team), I don't mind taking some other team (preferably the Ravens or the Falcons).

You unfortunately must have separate Live! accounts, and the games must be played online.  Their system keeps up with it, not us so it isn't at all possible.

Sorry frown

Last year, Ralph and I encountered the same problem in the PS2 league. What we ended up doing was playing off-line in our head-to-head matchup and then told the administrator of our league who won. Apparently, he had the ability to assign forfeits, so he just gave a forfeit to the one of us who lost and a win to the one who won.

I'll take the Panthers!

If last year on the PS2 was any indication, this online league stuff kicks some serious booty. I can't wait!

I had NFL2k4 for the PS2 last year and online league play had unbelieveable potential. As soon as a league game was completed, stats were automatically uploaded to the ESPNvideogames.com webpage. There you could see updated standings, league leaders in pretty much every category, and detailed box scores on each and every game (in the format that you'd see them on espn.com or nfl.com). It seriously was amazingly cool.

The only problem is that every league I joined (and I joined 3 or 4) ended up fading away after only a week or so. Too many people just started flaking out on playing their games. The website generated a schedule, but it was up to each individual person to agree on a time to play their next opponent. The website even offered individual league message boards to faciliatate this process. Anyway, I never made it past week 3 in any league, because inevitably people wouldn't play their games. I guess that's the problem with trying to play a full league (isn't that 32 teams?) with a bunch of strangers.

If we attempt a GG/CG league, let's do are best to sign up only people who are committed to playing. Maybe we could even have a weekly gametime (e.g., Wed. night at 9 eastern or something like that). If we need to, we could have a smaller league of 8 or 12 if we need to. I'd love to participate in an active, committed league.

We could do a league of just 8 committed players to see how that goes at first.

I love the idea of a league, if people would be completely committed to playing their games. I hear this year, in addition to keeping standings, league leaders, and box scores for ever game, teams can even complete online trades between teams. That's just too cool...

I'll take the panthers!

I'm not on XBOX live yet, but I will be by August 10th.  biggrin

Also, although I'm not any good, I'm up for playing in any online capacity. I'd love to try a small league sometime of dedicated players, because having all your box scores and league leaders online at the espnvideogames site is pretty darn cool (from what I've seen from the PS2 version last year)

I'm actually thinking about selling in my PS2 to get ESPN for the XBox. That way I can compete in a GoneGold/ConsoleGold league with all you guys?

Who's up for it?
