5202  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 Launch Thread on: November 10, 2006, 01:37:34 PM
Well I got to play one at Toys R Us tonight.  They come out tomorrow in Japan and when I left work at 9pm there were exactly 3 people standing out front of the store.  So I guess if I wanted to have a PS3, I could have gotten one in 12 hours time.  Oh well!  Anyways today I played: Devil May Cry 4, Gran Turismo HD, Ridge Racer 7 and some tennis game that I forget the name of.  My impressions?  Well it's pretty big alright but I think it's the concave shape that makes it look bigger than it actually is.  When I sized it up and then ran over to where the 360's were I couldn't see a huge difference.  I wish I had had tape measure on me!  One thing I found a little annoying was that only the D-pad seemed to work in the dashboard. The analogue sticks wouldn't do anything for me.  It also seems (from those demos anyways) that every game requires you to push and hold the little PS button on the controller in order to exit out of the game.  I couldn't find an "exit" button for the life of me on any of the game menus.  The graphics are impressive of course.  That's to be expected for any new console.  The faces on the tennis game were photorealistic and didn't look like zombies from the EA sports games.  Gran Turismo was a big disappointment for me.  I've never been able to get into that game so I suppose I'm a little biased.  There's no interactivity with the environment whatsoever.  The backgrounds looked good but where basically static. I sucked badly in a Subaru WRX.  Like someone said before, for another game it looked like you could see seams in some of the cars an they looked a little jaggy around the edges.  Perhaps it's the juxtaposition with all the other beautiful things in the game but it really stands out for me.  That's one thing that I've noticed with this new generation HD stuff.  The picture is so sharp that you can really see it if it doesn't look perfect.  With a low-res TV these sorts of things don't stand out so much.

Anyways I had fun but I think I'm going to have to wait around until I can get a North American version so I can play my PS2 games.  That's such a pisser.  Couldn't they have developed it so that it could read both NTSC-J and NTSC-U/C games?

I honestly have no idea why someone would kill themselves to get a PS3 when 360s are easily available, less expensive, and have a much larger library of games, including alot of the PS3 launch titles.  I could understand if Final Fantasy or MGS were coming out with it. Do people really want to play Resistance or watch Blu Ray movies that bad?

I genuinely do not understand it.

By that line of reasoning, people would only ever buy the first console that comes out and next consoles would sell exactly zero units.  Why did people bother buying the XBOX when they had that beautiful, cheap PS2 with a BOATLOAD of games for it (with more still even coming out after the XBOX support has basically dropped off).

The 360 might be less expensive but when you buy that $200 HD add-on or pay for that upgraded 60 gig HD then the prices are pretty much equal.

Two days until the release in Japan!  If it wasn't for the fact that it won't play Region 1 (that's Canada and America right?) encoded movies then I would probably be standing in line with everybody else on Saturday.  Well that and the fact that I'd have absolutely zero chance of getting one.  And the fact that I have to work on Saturday.  mad

Regions changed with Bluray.  America and Japan are in the same region so movie watching isn't an issue.  The only problem with a Japanese PS3 is that PS1 and PS2 games are still region encoded so those aren't playable.

Dammit!!! If it wasn't for the whole "PS2/1 region encoding" then I would totally be out on Saturday for  a PS3!  Oh well.
And as for that size thing, it could be partially a perspective thing.  I mean if it's on top and you're taking a picture from a downward angle than whatever is on top is going to look bigger than it actually is.  No doubt that the console is actually bigger though.
5205  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Developer troubles with PS3? on: November 09, 2006, 03:26:38 AM
Well I don't know about lack of support but the PS2 was apparently always a pain to use for developers.  It didn't stop them from making great games though.
5206  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Okami vs Zelda ? on: November 09, 2006, 03:22:44 AM
I wasn't a really huge fan of the Zelda dungeons.  Some of them (relatively close to the begining of the game were just a bit too much for me.  So far I haven't done any dungeons in Okami.  Just running around and exploring and doing little quests for people.  I'm also not a big fan of how the fighting in Okami takes place in a sort of arena, now that you mention it.  Not a big thing just a small niggle.  And so far I think my little sidekick Issun has been a little bit too helpful.  I often feel as if I'm being led by the hand to conclusions which I've already made or would like a chance to figure out for myself.  I like the journal.  Does Zelda have that?  Sorta helps you keep track of what you're supposed to be doing next if you take a break.

On Tuesday I had a choice to make.  It was either Final Fantasy 12 (8,800円), Bully (6,800円), Okami (6,800円) or Zelda:WW (GC (15,000円) + Zelda (3,100円) + (memory card (?円).
I went with the cheaper option and I think I made the right choice!  Hopefully by the time I'm finished Okami I will be ready for a trip back to Canada where I can pick up these games more cheaply.  Or will the Wii be region free?  If so then maybe I'll pick up a Wii here and then grab the new Zelda at the import store when it comes out.
5207  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Okami vs Zelda ? on: November 09, 2006, 01:33:27 AM
Is it even fair to make a comparison of these two games?  If so, I can't do it because I've never really had much of an opportunity to play any of the Zelda games as I've never really owned a Nintendo system (only a Gamecube for two days and then I returned it as I got frustrated playing OoT).  I'm curious though as to what people who have played both extensively think.  I just picked Okami a few days ago in Akihabara (for 6,800円  crybaby) and so far for me it has been 5 hours of pure unadulterated JOY.  For me this could be my Game of the Console I think.  Someone told me that you don't even really get into the full story until the 8 or 10 hour mark.  So how about it?  Does it out-Zelda Zelda?  Or is it a different kind of game that has its own good points?
5208  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 Launch Thread on: November 09, 2006, 12:09:36 AM
Here are some pics from Bic Camera in Tokyo of one of the PS3 stands.  This maybe old news to everybody in America if EB Games have their stands up already (which they probably do).  Again forgive me if that's true.

First pic.  They're playing a demo of Ridge Racer right now.  It looked alright I guess.  You can see on the sign that they're on sale starting 11/11.  I suspect the 9:30-10:00 part is approximately how long they'll be available before you're screwed for the next 4 months.

Second pic.  Games.  It shows the price of the PS3 on the sign on the right.  The 20 gig one is priced at 49,990円.  Suspiciously enough there didn't seem to be a price for the 60 gig unit.  The launch games (according to the stand) look like it's: Ridge Racer 7, Genji, Gundam, Resistance, some sort of golf game (not Hot Shots), and that bloody domino type game that they are always playing on tv here with all the Kanji written on them.  Hardly the type of game I'd want to show off on my new PS3.  Maybe my PS One.  There might also be the Sonic game as well.  I don't see the game on the stand in my pic but it was playing on the TV.

Third pic.  Close up of the game cases themselves.  They're shorter and wider than the old PS2 cases and they're clear plastic.  Sorry if this is old news to everybody but it was new to me so I thought I'd post it! smile

Looks like they're being pre-sold at about $1500 dollars.  Damn that is some pretty sweet profit!  Pretty decent way to get a PS3 for yourself free (if you're willing to give up your first one)
5212  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Need advice on which console system to buy on: November 06, 2006, 12:20:11 AM
On the plus side, I think the PS3 is coming out for 49,000 yen which is only.... $415 US!  You could pick up a free game with the difference.
5213  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Need advice on which console system to buy on: November 06, 2006, 12:18:00 AM
Remember that while the PS3 is region free on the games side, there is still region protection for movies.  Which means if you want to use the PS3 for a Blu-ray player, you're going to be stuck watching japanese hentai movies.

My copy of Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete arrived from Ebay earlier this week.  I hope to get started on it by the weekned after I write up a brief review of Grandia.

Onward!

So it took you about five weeks to finish a game?  Remind me to check this thread again in about 3 years! lol

Why bother getting Ridge Racer 6 when you can get Ridge Racer 7?  I'd take any FPS games off the list as they all play on the PC and they should all be played on the PC anyways.  Unless of course your console has mouse and keyboard support in which case I suppose it's ok.
I also have to agree that the Xbox 360 has been out for almost an entire year now so I would HOPE that it's list of exclusives would be significantly longer than other non-released consoles.

In these days of paying close to $600 to get the next top of the line graphics card (probably with a 2 year lifetime), I don't see how some people can balk at $600 for an entire console.

Don't get me wrong-I agree that $600 is a lot of money-which is why I don't have a $600 Nvidia card.  But there seems to be a lot of hypocrisy around here when it comes to dishing out cash for the computer and dishing out cash for the console (not calling you a hypocrite Kathode, just making a general observation about what I notice on these forums.)

Hmm yeah I have to agree about the HDTV thing.  I don't have any proof to back it up but I think most people are going to go HDTV nowadays.  Now they obviously arent all going to be buying $3000 plasma tv's but you don't have to anymore.  My tv is HD (kind of-it isn't the full HD im sure but whenever I watch Discovery HD it goes to a better resolution) and it only cost a little lesss than $400.  And it's 29 inches too.  Hell here in Tokyo, whenver I go into an electronics store, there are no longer any old TV's on display anymore.  All they have is the flat panel kind.

Can we still go to Gamefaqs and get codes for free or has EA removed that ability?  Say all you want about how it's your choice to buy the code but if you cant still look it up on the internet then they're not really giving you much of a choice anymore.  Perhaps there'll come a day when you can no longer input codes into your games?  Cheats either have to be unlocked through gameplay or activated through some main server after you pay for it.
