Technically I think the USB ports were there from the begining. Some games had mouse and keyboard support I think.  Not sure which ones though.

This is part of the reason why backward compatability is a non-issue for me in the HDTV generation. Put any xbox/PS2/gamecube game on a decent sized HDTV and you get to see all those glaring graphic defects and jaggies. Playing FF12 on my friend's 42" LCD is just painful.

It must be a shame to be a graphics whore Tongue  Missing out on all those great games that have basically everything else.  Of course I don't have a 42" LCD tv so I guess I don't really have anything to compare it to.  I bet I'd rather play FFXII than that mediocre Xbox 360 RPG that I don't even remember the name of anymore.  Or the PS3's first mediocre RPG for that matter.

I'm not even sure what you're accusing me of here.  Are you saying I'm anti-Wii? I'm pro-Wii??  I don't even have a Wii (or an Xbox 360 or a PS3) so I'm certainly not going to play any of them.  I have no idea what I said in the PS3 thread but as for the other thread, I was commenting about the fat jackasses who play bowling while sitting down and not about the wii itself.  You're obviously in need of some kind of medication and I don't think it's valium.

Fair enough, but then how do you explain the plethora of PS3 threads?  I'm sure there are more Wii owners on this board then there are PS3 owners.  I just found it odd as hell that the Wii seemed to be MIA from the boards.  Anyway that was yesterday-perhaps today is a different story.

Seriously, what in the world has been up your ass the last few days? You are seriously obsessed with the Wii to extend of absolutely bashing the other consoles, you are wondering why we don't have essentially an entire forums worth of posts for a console that is brand new and most people don't have...and you are trying to tell us that because Bill Harris, an internet blogger that has no more insight into the next-gen console wars than any of us declares the Wii the winner after ONE WEEK we should all wonder why we aren't talking about it more? Dude, get a grip.

Are you referring to me?  For one thing I haven't been bashing any consoles lately and secondly I've been in Kyoto for the past 4 days so I haven't even been posting lately.  I just found it strange that there are more threads right now for a console that was released a year ago then there are for a console that was released 4 days ago.
5207  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Can someone point me to the Nintendo forum? on: November 24, 2006, 11:54:36 AM
I'm assuming that there is one because there's basically one Wii-themed thread on the first page and that is in regards to selling one.  The Wii was just released a couple of days ago wasn't it?  No Zelda threads or anything?  Is it because everyone is so busy playing it?  Or is everyone just generally apathetic towards the Wii?  The oh so omniscient Bill from Dubious Quality has already declared the Wii the winner of the next generation console war.  He really ought to come check out this forum for a rebuke.

*edit* at second count there appears to be more than one Wii thread but none with great enthusiasm

Nope, all hd disc formats are coming in those slightly undersized boxes.  However, the PS3 ones are that semi-transparent plastic, which has always looked really cheap to me.  They also use it for the PSP cases, but for those, the artwork covers most of the plastic.  The PS3 label leaves a lot more of it exposed, and I think it looks awful.

Phew! Fortunately I caught that in time because I base all my movie and  console purchases based on what the case looks like!  Roll Eyes

It's not a game system anymore.  It's basically a free $1500 profit.  I consider myself a pretty hardcore gamer but I had no idea that the 360 was going to be a huge thing on Ebay and I didn't pick up on that then I'm pretty sure that most casual gamers never thought of it either.  But now everyone and their grandmother want to sell one on Ebay.  Just one more thing to blame the evil Microsoft empire on.  mad  Of course, console makers could also get their shit together and actually make sure that they have a decent stock available before they release.

So far from the reviews I've been reading, the PS3 SIXAXIS controller is getting better feedback than the Wii controllers!.  The reviews didn't really rave about the Wii for either Call of Duty 3 controls or Excite Truck but both NHL 2k7 and NBA 07, had good things to say about the SIXAXIS controller.
5224  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Excite Truck: 6.8 at Gamspot on: November 15, 2006, 03:24:13 PM
I was most interested in what they had to say about the controls, what with some people saying it's the second coming of Christ and some people saying it's a gimmick.  Doesn't look like we'll get an answer on that from this game.  They seemed very neutral about it.  As in, it has potential but could have been better implemented.
5225  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 Launch Thread on: November 15, 2006, 10:15:59 AM
I was in Toys R Us today and was checking out some prices. PS3 controllers are going for $60 Cdn (and I thought 28 bucks was expensive) and the games were $55 Cdn.  A little less than that actually.

And what would upset you more?  Opening up your new console to find that it doesn't have component cables or opening up your console and finding that it's NOT region free and it's NOT backwards compatible and it DOESN'T come with an HD player installed?  I'd far rather just dish out the few bucks for the component cables and have those other things included.

Well if people are just replacing their launch PS2s now then good on Sony!  I seriously doubt that there's 250k people replacing their PS2's Roll Eyes  IF that were true, Sony would have a recall on bigger than their battery fiasco.  Believe it or not their are probably many familiies that just can't afford to buy a console (I'm talking at last generation prices not this generation) and they have to wait until the console is on it's last legs before picking one up.  I'm not poor but when I was younger I waited on average of 2.5-3 years before picking up my PS and PS2.  With all the great games still coming out for the PS2 I'll probably pick up one of those cool 'slim' PS2's before I get a PS3.

5235  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 Launch Thread on: November 10, 2006, 01:37:34 PM
Well I got to play one at Toys R Us tonight.  They come out tomorrow in Japan and when I left work at 9pm there were exactly 3 people standing out front of the store.  So I guess if I wanted to have a PS3, I could have gotten one in 12 hours time.  Oh well!  Anyways today I played: Devil May Cry 4, Gran Turismo HD, Ridge Racer 7 and some tennis game that I forget the name of.  My impressions?  Well it's pretty big alright but I think it's the concave shape that makes it look bigger than it actually is.  When I sized it up and then ran over to where the 360's were I couldn't see a huge difference.  I wish I had had tape measure on me!  One thing I found a little annoying was that only the D-pad seemed to work in the dashboard. The analogue sticks wouldn't do anything for me.  It also seems (from those demos anyways) that every game requires you to push and hold the little PS button on the controller in order to exit out of the game.  I couldn't find an "exit" button for the life of me on any of the game menus.  The graphics are impressive of course.  That's to be expected for any new console.  The faces on the tennis game were photorealistic and didn't look like zombies from the EA sports games.  Gran Turismo was a big disappointment for me.  I've never been able to get into that game so I suppose I'm a little biased.  There's no interactivity with the environment whatsoever.  The backgrounds looked good but where basically static. I sucked badly in a Subaru WRX.  Like someone said before, for another game it looked like you could see seams in some of the cars an they looked a little jaggy around the edges.  Perhaps it's the juxtaposition with all the other beautiful things in the game but it really stands out for me.  That's one thing that I've noticed with this new generation HD stuff.  The picture is so sharp that you can really see it if it doesn't look perfect.  With a low-res TV these sorts of things don't stand out so much.

Anyways I had fun but I think I'm going to have to wait around until I can get a North American version so I can play my PS2 games.  That's such a pisser.  Couldn't they have developed it so that it could read both NTSC-J and NTSC-U/C games?

I honestly have no idea why someone would kill themselves to get a PS3 when 360s are easily available, less expensive, and have a much larger library of games, including alot of the PS3 launch titles.  I could understand if Final Fantasy or MGS were coming out with it. Do people really want to play Resistance or watch Blu Ray movies that bad?

I genuinely do not understand it.

By that line of reasoning, people would only ever buy the first console that comes out and next consoles would sell exactly zero units.  Why did people bother buying the XBOX when they had that beautiful, cheap PS2 with a BOATLOAD of games for it (with more still even coming out after the XBOX support has basically dropped off).

The 360 might be less expensive but when you buy that $200 HD add-on or pay for that upgraded 60 gig HD then the prices are pretty much equal.

Two days until the release in Japan!  If it wasn't for the fact that it won't play Region 1 (that's Canada and America right?) encoded movies then I would probably be standing in line with everybody else on Saturday.  Well that and the fact that I'd have absolutely zero chance of getting one.  And the fact that I have to work on Saturday.  mad

Regions changed with Bluray.  America and Japan are in the same region so movie watching isn't an issue.  The only problem with a Japanese PS3 is that PS1 and PS2 games are still region encoded so those aren't playable.

Dammit!!! If it wasn't for the whole "PS2/1 region encoding" then I would totally be out on Saturday for  a PS3!  Oh well.
And as for that size thing, it could be partially a perspective thing.  I mean if it's on top and you're taking a picture from a downward angle than whatever is on top is going to look bigger than it actually is.  No doubt that the console is actually bigger though.

5239  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Okami vs Zelda ? on: November 09, 2006, 03:22:44 AM
I wasn't a really huge fan of the Zelda dungeons.  Some of them (relatively close to the begining of the game were just a bit too much for me.  So far I haven't done any dungeons in Okami.  Just running around and exploring and doing little quests for people.  I'm also not a big fan of how the fighting in Okami takes place in a sort of arena, now that you mention it.  Not a big thing just a small niggle.  And so far I think my little sidekick Issun has been a little bit too helpful.  I often feel as if I'm being led by the hand to conclusions which I've already made or would like a chance to figure out for myself.  I like the journal.  Does Zelda have that?  Sorta helps you keep track of what you're supposed to be doing next if you take a break.

On Tuesday I had a choice to make.  It was either Final Fantasy 12 (8,800円), Bully (6,800円), Okami (6,800円) or Zelda:WW (GC (15,000円) + Zelda (3,100円) + (memory card (?円).
I went with the cheaper option and I think I made the right choice!  Hopefully by the time I'm finished Okami I will be ready for a trip back to Canada where I can pick up these games more cheaply.  Or will the Wii be region free?  If so then maybe I'll pick up a Wii here and then grab the new Zelda at the import store when it comes out.
5240  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Okami vs Zelda ? on: November 09, 2006, 01:33:27 AM
Is it even fair to make a comparison of these two games?  If so, I can't do it because I've never really had much of an opportunity to play any of the Zelda games as I've never really owned a Nintendo system (only a Gamecube for two days and then I returned it as I got frustrated playing OoT).  I'm curious though as to what people who have played both extensively think.  I just picked Okami a few days ago in Akihabara (for 6,800円  crybaby) and so far for me it has been 5 hours of pure unadulterated JOY.  For me this could be my Game of the Console I think.  Someone told me that you don't even really get into the full story until the 8 or 10 hour mark.  So how about it?  Does it out-Zelda Zelda?  Or is it a different kind of game that has its own good points?
