Gah you buggers!! My friend picked this up for me yesterday but the lady at the post office said that it could take 'up to three weeks' to get to Japan!!  What sort of assbackwards post office is Canada running anyways!?  It'd better not take anywhere near that long!  mad

4963  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: July NPD - "The Wii is just a fad" on: August 24, 2007, 01:37:26 AM
How is it that the Wii is eclipsing all the other consoles and yet it only managed one single title in the top 10???  What are people doing with their Wiis anyway?  The Wii may be ridiculously cheap but I won't even consider buying one until it can back up the hardware with the software.  And in my opinion it's doing an even worse job than Sony in that department.

Spoiler for Hiden:
The 5th one you get when you place the moon and the star in the correct order on the rock/paper/scissor type thing.  The only thing I can't find is whatever the 6th thing is.  It isn't an armlet though-it's some circular shaped thing.

4967  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: This Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD thing is taking a long time to finish on: August 22, 2007, 01:28:58 PM
Sorry Gellar I think I misread your post-I believe that we're actually arguing the same thing-that music downloads are so successful because in that case convenience is far more important than physical media.  I don't think we'll ever get to that point with DVD's.

And that's great that I can get a 1TB HD for $270 US.  But what happens when I fill it up?  Go out and buy a second HD for another $270?  By that time, BlueRay players will probably be MUCH more reasonably priced so why bother?  And what happens when that great HD gets fried?  I suppose there might be some sort of licensing thing that lets me redownload my movies but God would it ever be a pain in the ass to download 50 movies again.

Honestly, as long as people continue to buy movies then physical media is here to stay. When people spend $30-40 on a movie they want something PHYSICAL for it.  Renting might be something else altogether but it'll be limited to the fringe.  I'm sure (i'm talking out of my ass here) that the majority of people would far rather drive the two minutes to their local video store, or pick something up on their way home from work rather than sit down and wait for a download-even if it is only half an hour.

I would be fine with downloadable content, but they have to get the quality up to the standard that HD DVD/Bluray has set.  Currently, only a select few HD broadcasts can come close to the quality of HD DVD.  I would hate to lose that much quaity.

Seriously. 25-50 gb downloads of each and every hi-def movie over broadband? In what country, decade, and price point? This is still a pipe dream.

Meh.  3 years ago noboby would dream of downloading 5.2 gig standard def movies or 1.5 gig 30 minute console game demos either.

It's not meh man, think about it. Where are they going to get stored? Whose hard drive, whose cable box? How is ownership going to work? You want 50 25gb blu-ray movies? Where are you going to get the space? It costs a freaking arm and a leg for a 300gb TIVO. Thats 12 movies, done. Where are the tv shows going? How long will rentals last, will they stream? I don't care how fast you can occasionally get a 1.2 gb demo-maybe 20 minutes eveyr once in a great while? So what, it will take 6 hours minimum if we are lucky to get a hi-def movie? Why the hell would the average schmuck do that when they can get it from Netflix in waves for as cheap as a tivo subcription or roll down to blockbuster and have it in 20 minutes?

I think that this digital distribution is the wave of the future, absolutely. But all this glib, "meh, we have the technology to do it now you naysayers are wrong" stuff is just plain silly. The infrastructure at its most basic might be there, but it is at least one full consumer cycle of 5-10 years from reality.

Finally, someone with a head on their shoulders.  I'm not a big movie collector but I probably have about 40 or 50 movies.  Even at only 20 gigs each, where am I going to get a 1000GB harddrive?  Or am I going to have to redownload it everytime I want to watch it.  Physical media will always be king-because we are material creatures and having a collection of "bytes" is not very impressive or satisfying.

Gellar your comparison to Itunes is apples and oranges.  People listen to music on the go-they don't watch movies on the go.  Nobody wants to be carrying around a big-ass cd player that can only hold one cd at a time.  However when I'm in the comfort of my own home it doesn't bother me in the least to take a DVD out of it's case and pop it in the DVD player.

4972  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Re: Should we merge Sports and Console Gaming? on: August 21, 2007, 11:58:07 AM
Yes let's merge it.  The sports forum is pretty damned dead and some threads don't get nearly the attention that they need.  Hot Shots Golf 5 for instance. And I would just delete the sports forum-I personally don't think any of the threads need to be moved.  There's new iterations of the games every year so the old threads are basically obsolete.

Blu-Ray/ HD will always remain a niche product much like the Laserdisc.  The next paradigm shift will be downloadable HD content, and by the time the HD TV saturation reaches critical mass the tech to make it happen will be reaching maturity.

Mark my words.  It'll be a paradigm shift on the level of VHS>>DVD

I don't see it happening.  What happens when my harddrive craps out and I lose all the movies I downloaded?  I'll be seriously pissed that I didn't have a physical back up like a Blueray.  And for renting movies, I LIKE going to the video store and browsing.  I like the physical feel in my hands.  If it wasn't for us kids, our parents probably still wouldn't have a DVD player.  Do you really think they're going to start downloading films via broadband?  I don't think so.

I don't think it's that terrible a selection.

We Were Soldiers
Sky Captain
The Perfect Storm
Apollo 13

All quite good movies in my opinion.  Nothing wrong with owning a little Lara Croft either.

Anybody have this for trade?  I'm looking to pick this up so I can play my PSX games on my PSP.  I just walked around Akihabara all day today, found the last remaining copy of the Japanese game in all of Tokyo, brought it home and found out that it had already been patched up to 3.51  mad mad mad mad

I have: Sid Meiers Pirates, FIFA 07 and Legend of Heroes.

If you don't want to get rid of your game, but just want to help out a fellow GT'er in distress, I could just pay you for your shipping costs and then send the game back to you once I've downgraded (or bricked) my PSP.

They're selling a PS3 package with Minna no Golf in Japan.  Unfortunately it doesn't come with the $100 discount that they get in America so I'm holding off.  I'm playing a LOT of Minna no Golf on my PSP right now.  I just wish it had multiplayer.

Just installed Deus Ex GOTY, installed the patch, ran the game, installed HDTP and then installed Shifter mod.  I had a problem getting the game to start (something about the dx something or other-a problem with the command line) but I managed to fix that.  However the game doesn't look any different to me.  I took a couple of screenshots of Paul but they look exactly the same to me.  Have I done something wrong?  I start up the game using the HDTP icon.

I've been playing a crapload of Minna no Golf on the PSP lately.  The best golf game out there in my opinion.  Unfortunately in Japan we didn't get the $100 price drop although they are selling a PS3 package that comes with Minna no Golf 5 for about $524 US.  The 20GB version would be about $100 less of course.

I haven't been this excited and impressed with an expansion since the Throne of Bhaal.

Well I picked up Phantom Hourglass this weekend.  It was free-woohoo for Bic points!  As for my first impressions-wow Japanese games are HARD to read!  I had to get my girlfriend to translate the opening sequence because the story wouldn't pause so I didn't have time to read it.  Everything from there on in isn't as bad because you touch the screen to advance the story and if you can't read any of the kanji you just have to touch it and a little bubble will pop up with the more easy to read hiragana).
As for actual gameplay impressions...well I wont have many more until you guys get the game in October because that's probably when I'll have finally gone through and translated the initial dialogue/story opener smile
All I can say is that moving around using the stylus feels really precise and natural-I couldnt imagine going back to using the direction pad.  Also, being able to draw on the map is kinda cool.
