300 years after Initial Contact...

Earth.  Nine billion people.  That was over 300 years ago.  There are slightly over nine million now.  The world as we knew it ended in 2025.  That was the year we made contact with an intelligence other than our own-or rather, they made contact with us.  In fact, contact between our worlds  had taken place long before we realized it-if you call 'obliteration' realization that is.

It was the Xenopods who found us.  It was the Machine who destroyed us.

The Xenopods are a parasitical, evolutionary species.  They use human biomass to birth and feed their young.  The young, xenogytes as they're called, devour the brain and then proceed to take over the body's central nervous system.  They may continue to consume the body but more often use it as a shell to further their evolutionary process.  The foundation of the Xenopod society is the Hive supported by the Queen.  A constant supply of biomass is needed to support the hatching of xenogytes.  The Xenopods had nine billion good reasons to come to earth.  They needed hosts with which to construct their army. They had been secretly establishing a foothold on Earth-the prelude to a grand invasion.  Before the Day to End All Days.  Before the Machine came.

We were not the enemy of the Xenopods-a race so puny and defenseless could never really be considered an enemy.  We were a commodity.  We were a resource to be used by the Xenopods to give them an advantage in the the war against their real enemy-the Machine Empire.  The two species had been warring perpetually for a millennium.  Allowing the Xenopods to gain access to such an important and abundant resource was not an option for the Machine.

A fleet of Machine Empire Superdreadnoughts folded into the edge of our solar system on November 11th, 2025.  They reached Earth 36 hours later.  In the blink of an eye, our fate suddenly changed from that of subservience to an alien Overlord to instant vaporization.  The Machine would not allow the precious resources to fall into the hands of the Xenopods.  Earth's cities were engulfed by nuclear hellfire and ray blasts.  No major population centre was spared.  But that was only the begining...

The Xenopods responded in force and for 20 years the battle raged on Earth's surface and the space above it.  Both sides established centres of operations on earth-visible and hidden.  The remaining scrags of humanity simply did their best to survive the onslaught.  Although 99% of the human population had been incinerated, the Xenopods still hoped to harvest DNA-and the Machine sought to prevent it. Finally, with the Earth nothing more than a war-scarred shell and with heavy casualties on both sides, both the Xenopods and the Machine simply...left.

During the war, the Xenopods began rounding up the remaining humans and shipping them to concentration camps for consumption or assimilation-or genetic experiments.  It was only after the war that the horrible truth became known.  During the war, the Xenopods had attempted to create human super-soldiers for use as cannon fodder against the Machine.  These creatures were composed mainly of human DNA with a few "additions".  Most retained their humanoid appearance although there were a few 'radical' experiments conducted by the Xenopods.  They remained subservient to the few remaining isolated groups of Xenopods until 150 years ago when they were finally freed from slavery by Ursius the Great.  They have slowly developed into a force to be reckoned with-a loose association of clans known as 'The League of Free Mutants".

And so for the next 300 years, Earth was in conflict between warring states.  Remaining pockets of Xenopods and the Machine fought each other and fought the Free Mutants for control of the last of the Earth's precious resources.  As dark as things were, however, there was one remaining hope for humanity.  One last chance to reclaim the planet.  What began as a seed-a ragtag group of resistance fighters-blossomed into a formidable empire-the Empire of Man.  The Emperor routinely sends forth his legions to gather the human survivors together and establish bases on the frontiers of the Empire. Each new day sees the Imperials working to reclaim territory from a bandit warlord, Mutant Clan, Machine Empire Citadel or Xenopod Hive.  Our goal is to reclaim what was taken from us, to crush the invader and the mutant under our boot.  It is God's will.  When the final shot is fired, only one faction will be left standing-the last of the Armageddon Empires.

I had the demo sitting on my hard drive for about two weeks but i couldnt force myself to install it.  The website and the AAR on OO was just TOO MUCH.  You know how you look at something and your eyes just glaze over?  That's not a criticism against the game-some games just make for better AAR's than others.  Anwyays i finally installed the demo and did alright with Bills guide.  i bought the game right after that and I'm starting an AAR of my own (not quite so screenshot heavy as the AAR on OO) for my DOD clan forum.  Maybe I will crosspost it here. I took one look at the AAR on the OO page, saw 1500 different pics and my brain just shut down.  I'm trying to figure out how to make an AAR that is more accessible to the casual gamer.  I'm not quite sure if that's possible.  Anyways I'll go ahead and post my prelude (which is just a rehash of the info on the website) in a new thread.

Well she's just the cutest little thing alright!!  But I personally think anybody who wants to have two huge dogs like that is crazy!  The first one must eat you out of house and home as it is! Are you by any chance one of those couples who has decided to forgo having kids and have dogs instead?  My aunt and uncle have done that.

I was a bit put off by Gamespot's review of Bravestory New Traveller for the PSP.  I bought the game anyways so I'll see what's up with it.  Most fans were outraged though.  Makes you wonder what's going on at Gamespot.

Take that back!! You can't talk that way about Bob Cole and Harry Neale?  Those two are Canadian Living Treasures!!  That hockey game looked like shit but as someone who has spent the past three hockey seasons in Japan, the audio was music to my ears.

I really wish I could recommend more. MLB The Show is an outstanding game. Motorstorm has wonderful graphics and great gameplay, but not my type of race. I don't really like Resistance. I keep trying to like it, and I just don't-and of course the cross platform titles great elsewhere are still great on PS3. Really, we need more games anytime now.

This is my whole problem with the system.  NO games.  I have right now a deal to get one of these for $350 and I won't jump because there are no games now, nor in the near future that I can find.  Hell, everything that used to be solely for Sony are now 360 as well.  Really bummer.

I agree with you there.  My PS3 arrived Last Friday.  So Saturday I went online and downloaded all of the full game demos available on the PSN Store.

Motorstorm - Seems OK if I can find it cheap.  The game seems like it could be fun online but it's nothing spacial after playing Dirt on the 360.

Ninja Gaiden - Nice graphics but I've already played the Xbox version and I don't want to spend $60 to play it again.

F1 Racing - I had never heard of this game before downloading it.  Seems fun because I do like and follow F1 racing.  I might pick it up if I see it on sale.

Resistance - I have played this game before and I don't think the demo does it justice.  I plan on buying this at some point.

Heavenly Sword - Very short demo.  Seemed like a hack and slasher to me, but not as good as God of War.  Maybe a rental.

I bought the PS3 because i had some disposable income available and it was a nice deal.  But I just don't see the thing getting much use if I don't enjoy Warhawk that much.

Yeah, I hear ya.  I went ahead and bought it for $350 simply because I could not beat the price for a system that was never used by its previous owner.  Brand new.  Problem is, I don't know why I bought it.  I think in the next 6 months I might play 3 games on it.  Pitiful to say the least.  I may just turn around and sell it or trade it in for store credit and wash my hands of it for good.  So sad too because from the previous generation the PS2 was far and away my favorite.

Pretty dumb move of me to buy the darn thing.  I just could not pass up the shininess of it.  Damn buyers remorse.  Oh well, I would rather spend $350 and be upset than $600.   Most amazing thing of all is how Sony screwed this up so badly.  Nothing against those who love it, but I just ain't seeing it.  If MGS4 and Killzone 2 suck, then you can just flush this system down the toilet as I see it.

On the other hand, if you were to buy it two years from now, it would still cost about $350 but you wouldn't have hardware based emulation. It's not like it's costing you money to sit under your TV is it?

oh, and did they include smoke grenades, and if so are they as cool as they were in CoD2?

I talked to one of the developers about this.  There aren't going to be any usable vehicles in the game when it ships.  There might be an addition later or it might be something included in an expansion, but it won't be out of the box.

They had smoke grenades that looked really cool.  The stun grenades were even better though.  If you got hit with one, the entire screen went white, you'd hear a high-pitched sound, and your vision would slowly come back to you with a jerking effect as your eyes are trying to readjust to the scene.  Very cool.

Hardly an innovation.  We've seen that in Counter-strike at least since it came out for Source.
Did I ever say it was innovative?  It was something I just wanted to point out was there.  The implementation of it was very well done.

No-but you made it sound like it was the first time you've ever seen such a thing.  I think it's impressive as well-only I was impressed with it over two years ago. smile

4977  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Japanese baseball on: August 27, 2007, 04:31:29 PM
Ahh yes they sure know how to do things in Japan.  Cute Japanese girls doing cheerleading routines all game long, along with singing in that cute Japanese voice (you know-sort of sounds like a bunch of drunk mice at a karaoke party), being served beer by girls in ridiculously sexist "baseball uniforms"-oh and there's some sort of game going on in the background as well smile

Seriously though it's good fun.  I went to a "company" tournament and watched Honda play Mitsubishi.  This isn't like your typical office league though.  These guys are high quality and they're playing in the Tokyo Dome!  Some of them actually get drafted into the Japan League.

I'm not a big follower of baseball in general and I was a little distracted this game (I didn't actually realize the game had started until the 7th inning smile ) but I've made a couple observations about Japanese baseball.  It's similar to American baseball although there are a couple differences.  First,  the batter is not actually allowed to leave the batters box until a full count has been reached.  He may not hit or be hit by the ball and the pitcher may not walk him or strike him out until full count has been reached.  Even if the count is 3-0 or 0-2, it will eventually go to 3-2 before the outcome is decided.  This leads me to wonder why they don't just change the rules to make the count automatically 3-2 and just have a single "sudden death" pitch.

Secondly, if there is a runner on first and there are no outs then the batter will bunt.  This is not optional and if the batter does not bunt he receives a game misconduct and given a thorough thrashing.  Nobody will be surprised by the bunt either.  There's no half swing which turns into a bunt here.  The batter patiently stands with his bat over the plate waiting for the pitcher to throw the ball.

Finally, the hardcore fans are crazy and will literally cheer all game long.  I'm not talking about a group of ten people either.  I'm talking about an entire section of the stands. They just like the excuse to break out of their shell I think.  Of course they're still Japanese so it's very organized cheering.  Still it's a lot of fun just to cheer smile  I have a few pics and videos.  Unfortunately for some reason I never got any of the actual game  nod

I gotta say, after having to dink around in those crappy little cars for the first few missions and then getting my hands on a roadracer-the feeling of raw power was just unbelievable!  The fact that I couldnt just tear around the city made it even more fun smile

How is it that the Wii is eclipsing all the other consoles and yet it only managed one single title in the top 10???  What are people doing with their Wiis anyway?  The Wii may be ridiculously cheap but I won't even consider buying one until it can back up the hardware with the software.  And in my opinion it's doing an even worse job than Sony in that department.

Sorry Gellar I think I misread your post-I believe that we're actually arguing the same thing-that music downloads are so successful because in that case convenience is far more important than physical media.  I don't think we'll ever get to that point with DVD's.

And that's great that I can get a 1TB HD for $270 US.  But what happens when I fill it up?  Go out and buy a second HD for another $270?  By that time, BlueRay players will probably be MUCH more reasonably priced so why bother?  And what happens when that great HD gets fried?  I suppose there might be some sort of licensing thing that lets me redownload my movies but God would it ever be a pain in the ass to download 50 movies again.

Honestly, as long as people continue to buy movies then physical media is here to stay. When people spend $30-40 on a movie they want something PHYSICAL for it.  Renting might be something else altogether but it'll be limited to the fringe.  I'm sure (i'm talking out of my ass here) that the majority of people would far rather drive the two minutes to their local video store, or pick something up on their way home from work rather than sit down and wait for a download-even if it is only half an hour.

I would be fine with downloadable content, but they have to get the quality up to the standard that HD DVD/Bluray has set.  Currently, only a select few HD broadcasts can come close to the quality of HD DVD.  I would hate to lose that much quaity.

Seriously. 25-50 gb downloads of each and every hi-def movie over broadband? In what country, decade, and price point? This is still a pipe dream.

Meh.  3 years ago noboby would dream of downloading 5.2 gig standard def movies or 1.5 gig 30 minute console game demos either.

It's not meh man, think about it. Where are they going to get stored? Whose hard drive, whose cable box? How is ownership going to work? You want 50 25gb blu-ray movies? Where are you going to get the space? It costs a freaking arm and a leg for a 300gb TIVO. Thats 12 movies, done. Where are the tv shows going? How long will rentals last, will they stream? I don't care how fast you can occasionally get a 1.2 gb demo-maybe 20 minutes eveyr once in a great while? So what, it will take 6 hours minimum if we are lucky to get a hi-def movie? Why the hell would the average schmuck do that when they can get it from Netflix in waves for as cheap as a tivo subcription or roll down to blockbuster and have it in 20 minutes?

I think that this digital distribution is the wave of the future, absolutely. But all this glib, "meh, we have the technology to do it now you naysayers are wrong" stuff is just plain silly. The infrastructure at its most basic might be there, but it is at least one full consumer cycle of 5-10 years from reality.

Finally, someone with a head on their shoulders.  I'm not a big movie collector but I probably have about 40 or 50 movies.  Even at only 20 gigs each, where am I going to get a 1000GB harddrive?  Or am I going to have to redownload it everytime I want to watch it.  Physical media will always be king-because we are material creatures and having a collection of "bytes" is not very impressive or satisfying.

Gellar your comparison to Itunes is apples and oranges.  People listen to music on the go-they don't watch movies on the go.  Nobody wants to be carrying around a big-ass cd player that can only hold one cd at a time.  However when I'm in the comfort of my own home it doesn't bother me in the least to take a DVD out of it's case and pop it in the DVD player.

Yes let's merge it.  The sports forum is pretty damned dead and some threads don't get nearly the attention that they need.  Hot Shots Golf 5 for instance. And I would just delete the sports forum-I personally don't think any of the threads need to be moved.  There's new iterations of the games every year so the old threads are basically obsolete.

Blu-Ray/ HD will always remain a niche product much like the Laserdisc.  The next paradigm shift will be downloadable HD content, and by the time the HD TV saturation reaches critical mass the tech to make it happen will be reaching maturity.

Mark my words.  It'll be a paradigm shift on the level of VHS>>DVD

I don't see it happening.  What happens when my harddrive craps out and I lose all the movies I downloaded?  I'll be seriously pissed that I didn't have a physical back up like a Blueray.  And for renting movies, I LIKE going to the video store and browsing.  I like the physical feel in my hands.  If it wasn't for us kids, our parents probably still wouldn't have a DVD player.  Do you really think they're going to start downloading films via broadband?  I don't think so.
