My guess is that it's probably just your disc-I mean, your PS3 uses hardware for backwards compatibility right?  I think all the ones in America still do.
4842  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PSP] D&D: Tactics impressions on: August 17, 2007, 12:20:49 AM
Well I have no idea what any of you guys are talking about so despite my love of tactical games I may pass on this one.  I'll have my plate full when I get my hands on Jeanne D'Arc and Brave Story anyways. smile
4843  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Minna no Golf 5 (Hot Shots Golf 5) on: August 16, 2007, 10:54:03 PM
I've been playing a crapload of Minna no Golf on the PSP lately.  The best golf game out there in my opinion.  Unfortunately in Japan we didn't get the $100 price drop although they are selling a PS3 package that comes with Minna no Golf 5 for about $524 US.  The 20GB version would be about $100 less of course.

Dragon Quest VIII had a story???  I just couldn't plow through that game I'm afraid.

I don't remember seeing in the GT review, approximately how many hours did it take to complete? If it was completed that is.
4846  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: HDTV recommendations for console gaming on: August 14, 2007, 02:56:56 PM
So let me get this straight-if I get a 32 or 37 inch TV, I don't really need to get 1080?  720p is fine?  Come to think of it, I can very rarely find TVs in that size range that are 1080i/p

GamingTrend gives it an 86%.  Not too shabby!  I'm getting this one shipped over here ASAP.

I picked it up at the $15 Circuit City deal but haven't installed it yet.  Glad to hear it's so good.

$15 is a steal!

I haven't been this excited and impressed with an expansion since the Throne of Bhaal.

Christ, it's 29.99 at Futureshop. With the US dollar at 1.05 Cdn, do they really expect me to pay twice as much for the same game? That's fucking ridiculous!
4853  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (now with IMPRESSIONS) on: August 09, 2007, 12:50:56 AM
Well I picked up Phantom Hourglass this weekend.  It was free-woohoo for Bic points!  As for my first impressions-wow Japanese games are HARD to read!  I had to get my girlfriend to translate the opening sequence because the story wouldn't pause so I didn't have time to read it.  Everything from there on in isn't as bad because you touch the screen to advance the story and if you can't read any of the kanji you just have to touch it and a little bubble will pop up with the more easy to read hiragana).
As for actual gameplay impressions...well I wont have many more until you guys get the game in October because that's probably when I'll have finally gone through and translated the initial dialogue/story opener smile
All I can say is that moving around using the stylus feels really precise and natural-I couldnt imagine going back to using the direction pad.  Also, being able to draw on the map is kinda cool.

I just checked it out.  It's a pretty good site but a little "too" gay for me.  I have nothing against it but when I want to read about games I only want to read about games-I don't want the gay/heterosexual slant.

What were the Japanese reviews for this one like?  I think I might pick it up tomorrow.  My Japanese is not up to par but I think it would be good practice to try it in Japanese. Looking at the pics on Gamespot, I seem to be able to read everything even though I can't understand it all.

4860  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Starcraft 2 hands on preview on: August 05, 2007, 09:02:55 AM
It looks to me like they're changing quite a lot.  From the 10 minute video I watched of the Terrans, they had a crapload of new units with new abilities which could change the balance of the game.  The graphics aren't mindblowingly beautiful but they're pretty good-and nobody plays this game for the nice graphics anyways.  I noticed that a lot of the dialogue audio is the same.  Someone please tell me that they still have the nuclear launch sequence detection warning still.  God I love that part smile

For example?  I'm not really into baseball so I won't be picking this up.  But im curious to know what makes it so great-I've seen it on sale over here.

Oh and I thought this was hilarious:

You think so? Do people do that for regular card games? (like Magic or Warcraft)
4863  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Eye of Judgement? on: August 03, 2007, 03:05:55 PM
Tycho over at PennyArcade is going crazy over some card playing game for the PS3-I've never even heard about it before.  Actually I'm not really even into card games like that but those guys are usually pretty on the ball when it comes to these sort of things.  Anybody heard much about it?

That HDD required label has been around a long time.  Don't know why people are just picking up on it now.  Here's a news article from February 06 about Football Manager which was the first HDD required game.  It's not a new trend you'll be seeing.  The number of Core Xboxes out there aren't a huge percentage by any means, but it's big enough to give anyone pause before saying "Yeah we're just going to cut them out."

Wow I would be seriously pissed off if I bought a core 360 and then found out that all of a sudden I couldn't play a lot of games on it.  I know the PS2 had FFXI but that's the only game that required a HD as far as I can remember and you could get it with the game.  Can you actually put a HD in the core 360?  If so then I guess it's not a huge problem, but if you cant even upgrade it then you'd be totally screwed.
4865  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Minna no Golf 5 (Hot Shots Golf 5) on: August 02, 2007, 03:16:00 AM
I asked a guy at a store the other day about Minna No Golf and he said it didn't have any english version included.  Sorry!

I would love to see the Core disappear since it was a bad idea to start with, but Microsoft seems pretty committed to it so I doubt it will be fully gone either.  As with all rumors, time will tell.

About effin' time they get rid of the Core model that has forced developers to develop for systems that don't have the HD in it (which was a VERY stupid idea to begin with).

And as already said earlier in this thread (and I've said many times before) - if Microsoft does a price drop, they need to drop the Premium to the Core level, and get rid of the Core.

What happens to the people who bought the core unit if they can't play any new games because they don't have a HD?

Huh
we used to play a game where you would have to try to flick a penny into the opponents "goal" (formed by the index and baby finger lying flat on the table).  It was more like hockey than football though.  Well I guess that's what being raised in Canada will get you.
4871  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DS Madden has paper football on: July 27, 2007, 03:01:39 PM
Forgive my ignorance but what the heck is paper football?  I went to your link but they just referred to it as something everybody would know.

Anybody else into this one?  Any must have expansion packs that I should pick up?
4876  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: You MUST rofl at this on: July 26, 2007, 03:14:01 PM
Technically all those people on that show are cultural icons.  Japan does not put "normal" people on shows like that.  They use famous celebrities who are already rich and really couldn't give a damn whether they won or lost.  There were two teams alright, but they weren't really competing for anything.  The losers got nothing and the winners got...nothing.  It's all about the laughs.

Yes I believe it's just the PS3 games that have no region encoding.  What I want to know is, if you can only play it in Japan, why the hell do they call it "International"?  It probably has something to do with the Japanese passion for naming their things completely differently from what they actually are.
