4841  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Watches on: September 14, 2007, 01:52:36 AM
Not too expensive (relatively).  The Seiko is 73,000 yen and Orient 45,000 yen.  So that would be about $650 and $380 respectively.  So not too expensive compared to those high end watches (Rolex?) but on the other hand, it's way more than I've ever paid for a watch before ($120).

It seems a little silly to walk around with the monetary equivalent of a PS3 on your arm or even a widescreen HDTV.  On the other hand, that $2000 HDTV will probably be hopelessly obsolete in 10 years time (PS3 even less) whereas you'd probably still be wearing that same watch in 40 years.

My birthday is coming up Sept 30th and I'm planning on picking myself up a little birthday present. I'm thinking either:

Seiko Perpetual Kinetic SNP004                               Orient something or other

What I like about the Seiko:

*it's kinetic so there's no need for a battery
*it's perpetual so I wont have to change the date until February 2100 (assuming I can make it smile)
*it has a 4 year power reserve so if you stop wearing it the hands stop moving but the date keeps advancing and when you start wearing it again, the hands automatically move to the correct time
*It's a quartz so it keeps pretty accurate time
*It has a solid back so I can get it engraved- perhaps "Nippon Tokyo 2007" or something

What I don't like about the Seiko:

*It's a quartz so all those mechanical elitists will laugh at me
*It's a quartz so it has the "ticking" second hand

What I like about the Orient:

*It's mechanical so I can give smug looks of superiorty to all those quartz users
*You can see the insides which is amazingly addictive to watch
*It's mechanical so it has the "sweeping" second hand movement
*The case back is clear
*It's kinetic

What I don't like about the Orient:

*It has a clear case back so I probably couldn't get an engraving
*Mechanicals aren't as accurate as quartz
*The dial is a little cluttered-I really don't need a slide rule
*It doesn't have a memory so if I stop wearing it I'm going to have to manually reset the time
*There's no day or date or anything

Anyways that's my conundrum right now. I don't know if many of you even know Orient. I've certainly never heard of them before.  They seem to be highly respected all over the world but not so much in North America.  Everybody says they're an amazing high quality watch for what you pay, comparing them to more expensive Swiss watches.  I may end up buying a completely different watch all together.  So do we have any watch enthusiasts here?  What do you like to wear on your wrist?

Is there no love for this type of game on these forums?  I don't recall ever seeing anyone talking about it (I admit, I didn't do a search).  I've been checking out some reviews and it looks like it has a lot of potential.  Have you played it? What do you think?  I know that people go nuts for it over here in Japan.  Is this game even out yet in America?  Someone must have impressions!

*edit* oh and I read in a review that it now loads on the go so now loadtimes are minimal (non-existent?) so there goes one major complaint from the first game.

I am curious why they should not be 3D?

What's the point?  There's barely any animation and the game looks cluttered as hell.  I don't include CM because it's so realistic and there's no grid.  You're basically playing a real time game with pauses.  I don't know.  I played Massive Assault and futuristic one in America and it totally turned me off these style of games.

4872  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Post-Apocalypse Now (AE AAR) on: September 01, 2007, 01:30:46 PM
Ok next turn.  I'm going to keep moving my Infantry west because I'm hoping that abandoned town might have some resources for the to take advantage of or maybe some sort of squatters.  I right click on my unit and then click on their name to move them....

Doh! There's something there alright! But they aren't squatters!  Independents.  Some random warlords perhaps. You can see in the information box that they have three units and one terrain bonus. Doh doh doh!  If I had had a recon unit, I would have had it in stealth mode and it would have been able to move on.  Unfortunately my infantry don't have stealth mode so they're screwed.  Looks like I'm going to have to show you how combat works a lot sooner than I had hoped.

Combat!  I don't have any choice in the matter unfortunately-they attack me.  I do have initiative in this battle though which means that I get to make the first attack.

Attacking is fairly simple.  You just right-click on the unit you want to attack with, then click on "Combat Attack" and then click on the unit you want to attack.  Observe below.

I chose to attack the unit directly in front of me.  Could I have attacked the unit to my far right?  I honestly don't know-I haven't read the manual yet lol.  Anyways, he's the one we're attacking.  The tentacle beast has an attack of 4 and a defence of 3.  I have an attack of 3 and a defence of 3.  So he rolls 3 die and I roll 3.

Shazbot.  I roll a 2 in attack but he rolls a 3 in defense.  To make a long story short, I'm screwed.  I missed.  It's now their turn.  They roll to attack me.  They beat me by 1.  Now despite the fact that my unit has 4 hit points and I only lost the roll by one my unit was destroyed.  I'm not sure exactly why that is.  I'm wondering if it has somehting to do with the "Neuro Toxin 4" that you can see on the Tentacle Beast card.  Anyways that's it for me this round.  I have lots of action points because I had no units to use them with so I'm able to deploy my Grenadiers and I also draw another card which gives me some sort of Intelligence centre.

*edit* after some reading of the manual it appears that when a unit wounds their opponent with the neuro toxin attack, they automatically take off 4 minus whatever I roll for my resistance.  If you go back to look at the Imperial infantry card, you can see that their "resistance" is only 1.  Which means even if I would have rolled perfectly (with only one die) it would still have been 4-1.  So the orignal attack of one and then the extra 3 from the neuro toxin special completely killed my unit.  DOH!

Well she's just the cutest little thing alright!!  But I personally think anybody who wants to have two huge dogs like that is crazy!  The first one must eat you out of house and home as it is! Are you by any chance one of those couples who has decided to forgo having kids and have dogs instead?  My aunt and uncle have done that.

We're not planning on any kids at the moment, and our dogs aren't necessarily an intentional test-run (even though they require almost as much responsibility), but we just enjoy dogs and love raising friendly, well-behaved animals.  It's very fulfilling and rewarding for us.

Simba actually doesn't eat us out of house and home.  He weighs 85 pounds, but the puppies actually wind up eating more than adults during their growing phase, but once they reach full-size you switch to adult food and cut back the quantity.  Nala currently eats two full cups of dry food a day (1/2 cup in the morning, 1/2 at night), and she'll eat even more as she nears 1 year (as many as 4 to 5 cups a day), but once she reaches full size I'll have to cut back the quantity and change into an adult food or else you risk obesity problems.  Simba only eats 3 dry cups a day (1 1/2 in the morning and 1 1/2 at night), and he's fit, healthy, and never begs for food or scavenges off of Nala's leftovers.  It's misleading just how much a dog has to eat to remain healthy (many people wind up overfeeding their dogs, hence my in-laws' 120-pound lab/golden mix  icon_eek).

The food isn't too expensive (we buy the Natural Choice Nutro line), it lasts a while, treats are given in moderation, and now that we have discovered a line of dog toys that are tested with tigers, we are even saving some money on replacing shredded toys because the new ones last so much longer.  So all in all the dogs aren't too terribly expensive (unless you factor in obedience training, boarding when we travel, annual vet bills, etc).  But even then it's not really that bad.  It costs me more time than money, and I'm okay with that.

Interesting-I love dogs but I think I love cats more.  They're so much less work!

4876  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Post-Apocalypse Now (AE AAR) on: August 31, 2007, 02:53:05 PM
Well I decided that I couldn't do both an AAR and teach how to play the game so for my DOD clans forum I decided that I would just do a quick guide.  So this place gets that too I'm afraid! Maybe I will be able to continue the AAR some other time.  Anyways!  This guide probably won't be much different than Bills except for the fact that his is far better written smile  I'm also only going to go over the first couple of turns I think.  It's just that initial hump that's a little difficult to get over.  Once you get going, it really isn't that bad.  After reading just part one and two of Bills blog I was good to go (all though I am still a total amateur and have a heck of a lot to learn-but at least now I know the basic mechanics).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok here goes. *deep breath*  I start a new game.  I leave all the options as they are except I chose the "Imperial Starter Deck" and I choose "random" for both my opponents.  Now the game starts.

The first thing I have to do is set up my base.  So first all the teams roll for initiative.  Anybody who has played boardgames before will know what this means. I had no idea until basically a couple months ago.  What it means is that the person who rolls the highest number of symboled die gets to go first!  As you can see, I kicked some butt here.

Ok now I get to set up first.  I'm not sure what difference it makes because you only have a small area on the map to choose from.  What you have to do is take your "base tile" at the bottom of the screen and drag it to any one of the green tiles on your map.  See below for "dragging and dropping" smile

The next thing you have to is set up your base.  What you do is you take your Fortress card and drag it onto the tile that you just dropped.  You have no other choice for where it can go.  Again observe dragging and dropping.

Then you click on "start game" and the game generates a map (all you can see right now are white tiles).

Ok so now the game has started and I've got my base set up, so now what?  Well first we have to roll for initiative again to see who goes first (this will repeat every turn.)  Everybody starts out with three dice but what you can do is use some of your resources to buy more dice.

This will give you slightly better odds in the initiative roll.  Why would you bother doing this?  Well for one thing, sometimes it's better to be able to attack your opponent before he can attack you and secondly (maybe more importantly?)  The person who goes first gets 12 AP (action points), second gets 8 AP and third only gets 6 AP.  Almost everything that you do in the game costs AP so it can be quite important to win that initiative roll.

As you can see, I sucked quite badly in the initiative roll- d'oh!  Ok so my opponents go first, so now it's my turn.  So now what?  Well getting some darned units onto the map would be a start!  Don't think of this as a card game-think of this as a regular TBS game-with cards.  Once you get those units on the map you move them like you would any TB wargame.

If you look at the picture below, you can see that I have a few unit cards in my "hand".  In fact I believe I have 7.  Unfortunately you cant see them all at once-you have to scroll.  You can have up to eight cards usually.  Anyways I want to get those units out of my hand and into the map!  If you look at the side of the card, you can see some different coloured circles with numbers on them.  Those represent the resource cost to deploy the cards (you can see your resources along the top of your screen like in any RTS game).  Specifically those resource circles are: AP, Humans, Materials, Energy and Technology. All the cards are sort of "grayed out" which means that I don't have enough resources to deploy any of them at the moment.

NEXT TURN

Ok, finally I have enough resources to deploy a unit.  Bad luck with that draw-usually you can deploy in the first turn.  I would have liked to have gotten a recon unit but no dice.  Instead I'll have to use these Imperial Infantry.  When you hold the mouse pointer over the card, this detailed information will pop up:

It tells you everything you need to know about that unit.  So how do you deploy a unit?  Same way that we've done everything else so far.  You click and drag the unit onto your base.  You're not ready to go off fighting just yet, soldier!  First we have to put that unit into an army.  If you look at one of the pics with your base, you'll see a rectangular box next to it with the number "1" on it.  It should say "2" after dropping your unit onto it.  What you want to do is click on that box and that will bring up your army display screen with your unit in one of the boxes.  Click on "Create Army" at the top and name the army whatever you want.

Then all you have to do is click and drag (seeing a pattern here?) on your unit and drop him into the new army that you just created on the bar on the side!  Congratulations! You now have a unit who is good to go!

So you want to get out there and kick some alien butt?  Lets go!  This time, right click on the rectangular box and your unit's name should pop up (the Army name).  If the unit has stealth capabilities, you can spend one AP to get it to change into stealth mode.  Then right-click on the box again and right click on your units name.  Now you should be able to move the unit (only one hex at a time).  I'm going to head over to the west because I see what looks like an abandoned town.

I get half way to the town and....

Ooh! People!  Allow yourselves to be "saved" by the Empire! Come back to the fold!

Nice! So we just picked up 4 extra human resources!  That should come in handy.  Well my unit has moved as far as it can go.  There's nothing left for me to do now.  I have a little AP left over (it doesn't carry over from turn to turn) so I use it to draw another card and I get...

Oooh sexy!  These guys look like they'll have a little more oomph than the infantry will!  Hopefully next turn I have enough resources to deploy them!

300 years after Initial Contact...

Earth.  Nine billion people.  That was over 300 years ago.  There are slightly over nine million now.  The world as we knew it ended in 2025.  That was the year we made contact with an intelligence other than our own-or rather, they made contact with us.  In fact, contact between our worlds  had taken place long before we realized it-if you call 'obliteration' realization that is.

It was the Xenopods who found us.  It was the Machine who destroyed us.

The Xenopods are a parasitical, evolutionary species.  They use human biomass to birth and feed their young.  The young, xenogytes as they're called, devour the brain and then proceed to take over the body's central nervous system.  They may continue to consume the body but more often use it as a shell to further their evolutionary process.  The foundation of the Xenopod society is the Hive supported by the Queen.  A constant supply of biomass is needed to support the hatching of xenogytes.  The Xenopods had nine billion good reasons to come to earth.  They needed hosts with which to construct their army. They had been secretly establishing a foothold on Earth-the prelude to a grand invasion.  Before the Day to End All Days.  Before the Machine came.

We were not the enemy of the Xenopods-a race so puny and defenseless could never really be considered an enemy.  We were a commodity.  We were a resource to be used by the Xenopods to give them an advantage in the the war against their real enemy-the Machine Empire.  The two species had been warring perpetually for a millennium.  Allowing the Xenopods to gain access to such an important and abundant resource was not an option for the Machine.

A fleet of Machine Empire Superdreadnoughts folded into the edge of our solar system on November 11th, 2025.  They reached Earth 36 hours later.  In the blink of an eye, our fate suddenly changed from that of subservience to an alien Overlord to instant vaporization.  The Machine would not allow the precious resources to fall into the hands of the Xenopods.  Earth's cities were engulfed by nuclear hellfire and ray blasts.  No major population centre was spared.  But that was only the begining...

The Xenopods responded in force and for 20 years the battle raged on Earth's surface and the space above it.  Both sides established centres of operations on earth-visible and hidden.  The remaining scrags of humanity simply did their best to survive the onslaught.  Although 99% of the human population had been incinerated, the Xenopods still hoped to harvest DNA-and the Machine sought to prevent it. Finally, with the Earth nothing more than a war-scarred shell and with heavy casualties on both sides, both the Xenopods and the Machine simply...left.

During the war, the Xenopods began rounding up the remaining humans and shipping them to concentration camps for consumption or assimilation-or genetic experiments.  It was only after the war that the horrible truth became known.  During the war, the Xenopods had attempted to create human super-soldiers for use as cannon fodder against the Machine.  These creatures were composed mainly of human DNA with a few "additions".  Most retained their humanoid appearance although there were a few 'radical' experiments conducted by the Xenopods.  They remained subservient to the few remaining isolated groups of Xenopods until 150 years ago when they were finally freed from slavery by Ursius the Great.  They have slowly developed into a force to be reckoned with-a loose association of clans known as 'The League of Free Mutants".

And so for the next 300 years, Earth was in conflict between warring states.  Remaining pockets of Xenopods and the Machine fought each other and fought the Free Mutants for control of the last of the Earth's precious resources.  As dark as things were, however, there was one remaining hope for humanity.  One last chance to reclaim the planet.  What began as a seed-a ragtag group of resistance fighters-blossomed into a formidable empire-the Empire of Man.  The Emperor routinely sends forth his legions to gather the human survivors together and establish bases on the frontiers of the Empire. Each new day sees the Imperials working to reclaim territory from a bandit warlord, Mutant Clan, Machine Empire Citadel or Xenopod Hive.  Our goal is to reclaim what was taken from us, to crush the invader and the mutant under our boot.  It is God's will.  When the final shot is fired, only one faction will be left standing-the last of the Armageddon Empires.

I had the demo sitting on my hard drive for about two weeks but i couldnt force myself to install it.  The website and the AAR on OO was just TOO MUCH.  You know how you look at something and your eyes just glaze over?  That's not a criticism against the game-some games just make for better AAR's than others.  Anwyays i finally installed the demo and did alright with Bills guide.  i bought the game right after that and I'm starting an AAR of my own (not quite so screenshot heavy as the AAR on OO) for my DOD clan forum.  Maybe I will crosspost it here. I took one look at the AAR on the OO page, saw 1500 different pics and my brain just shut down.  I'm trying to figure out how to make an AAR that is more accessible to the casual gamer.  I'm not quite sure if that's possible.  Anyways I'll go ahead and post my prelude (which is just a rehash of the info on the website) in a new thread.

We're against the sports forum.  This way it actually gets attention from other people and doesn't denigrate into a Devil/Lockdown/Starshifter thread smile
