4761  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / More great Japanese TV shows!! on: November 18, 2007, 09:15:35 AM
Human Tetris!!  85% of Japanese TV is absolute shiite IMHO but some of it is just pure comedy gold.  Funniest stuff I've seen on Japanese TV I think (other than Takeshi's Castle/MXC)

Human Tetris I

Human Tetris II

Human Tetris III

Human Tetris IV

I'm still just playing the demo but it got a whole lot better with DualShock 3's!! I loves my DualShock3 smile

I dunno.  I kind of enjoyed it.  It was different.  Although I still think most motion sensing is just a fad.  I tried Motorstorm as well with the motion control and found I'd rather use the analog stick.

Did anybody try out this demo?  I don't recall seeing any chatter about it on GT.  I downloaded the demo and found it to be quite a good time.  Not exactly sure what kind of game it is-there doesn't seem to be any race involved (except against the time).  You basically drive a toy car around a room that has been set up with all sorts of toys and collect coins and pull of cool jumps and what not.  The full game is only 9.99 so I think I'll probably pick this one up.  It really shows off the Sixaxis qualities quite well (and the Dual Shock 3's if you have one).  Basically the DualShock 3 is the steering wheel.  Also if you flip over on your back you have to shake the controller up and down to flip it back over again.  Quite good fun for a $10 game.

Wasn't it EA's version that was totally crap last year?  Or are you guys talking about 2K's version of this years game?

Sorry if this has been posted before.  I'm not sure whether this is a good lesson for wearing your seatbelt or not running from the cops.  Anyways it's gotta rank up there as the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen (after ATB's Japanese dancer that is).

From Gellar's article:

"Update Nov 16: Japanese entertainment market data firm, Media Create, reported the following sales figures for games consoles in Japan for the week November 5 to November 11."

That's amazing when you consider that the 40gig PS3 didn't even come out in Japan until November 11th.  So the bulk of those PS3's were sold in one day.  I wonder if the PS3 will top the Wii this month.

The moms are great too.  Unlike back home (in my experience anyways) even if a Japanese mom is out pushing her kid around in a baby buggy, she is totally DONE UP!  None of this, 'Oh I have a baby kid so I'm going to use that as excuse to look like a slob'.

I can't help but think about the downside of this:

Guy: Come on honey we're going to be late for the game!
Gal: Hold on, I still need to put on my makeup and choose my clothes
Guy: It's just a baseball game! You don't need to put on makeup!
Gal: ..........(continues with her routine)

Yes this is very true.  Sometimes that bothers me about my girlfriend.  I never mention it though.  I value my life.  On the other hand I enjoy the benefits of being able to gaze at all the other 7 million women who also took time to put on their makeup

I thought I'd make a new thread instead of digging up a dead one.  I've been playing the demo of this since I got my PS3.  This game absolutely blows my mind!! It's god damned fantastic! I've never had so much fun with a racer before.  I don't even like racing games.  Anybody still play this one?  I know it was well received by reviewers but lost some marks for lack of tracks and online play (both of which have since been fixed I believe).  If I didn't already have a PS3 then this game would be a system seller for me-it's just that much fun!
4775  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Panzer Tactics DS on: November 16, 2007, 03:26:41 PM
I'm not exactly sure why either.  I do know that most people prefer hex grid though and detest squares.  A square can only be attacked from four different sides whereas a hex can be attacked from six.  There are more reasons as well but I'm not exactly sure what they are.

Hah that is AWESOME!! In a country full of strange people doing strange things that tops it all.  Even the Japanese people are staring at her! That's no easy feat.  My roommate road down the street in broad daylight in a pikachu suit and not a single person gave him a second glance.

Sweet I'm looking forward to playing it.  I just got notice that my copy shipped from America today.  I'll be up for multiplayer anytime when I get it.  Perhaps this game will open your eyes to the wide world of wargaming? smile

If there is a DVD in the PS3 can I watch that on my PSP?  I hooked the PSP up to the PS3 for the first time today.  It was quite cool.  It's pretty awesome how it's possible to say, find out while your at work that there's a great new demo at the PSN store, fire up your PSP and use it to remotely turn on your PS3 and then get your PS3 to download the demo so it will be all ready and waiting for you when you get home.  Heck you might even be able to remotely install the demo although I didn't test that out.

And this is where the thread turned from sort of funny to definitely creepy.

And BTW - cover-firing (pushing the aim button to lean out of cover) leaves you way too vulnerable IMHO. All I did was hold down L1 to go into the shoulder stance, keep myself behind a large wall, and fire. There seems to be a 'magic' point where you can aim at the enemy, but he's basically incapable of hitting you back. It doesn't make any sense to write it, but however the camera works, it allows you to see things that your character couldn't possibly see through his eyes to shoot back at.

replayed the demo tonight, tried this, &, yes, even for a lamer like myself, it worked perfectly - more ready than ever now. thanks, d...

Yep after playing the demo about 4 times I started loving the combat.  I hope it comes action filled. The grenade effects are awesome-especially the ringing in the ear effect that you get if you get too close.  Oh and destructible cover is cool too smile

I wouldn't call the PS3 dead yet.  Looking at CeeKay's article, it states that over 5 million PS3's have been sold to date.  That is basically one year (or 11 months?)  Looking at Wiki (not the best source I realize), the 360 sold approximately 5 million in their first year (and only 11 million over two years).  Yet I don't recall anyone complaining that the 360 was d0med.  I think that the PS3 is going to have a very good second year.  It had a significant price drop which is going to pick up hardware sales (it made me get one) and it's got some good games coming down the pipe.  The PS3 won't overtake the 360 that's for certain but I'm predicting that the PS3 will have a better second year than the 360 did.

I suppose you have to place them in your starting cities?  I can't remember how PG did it.  It sorta makes sense though, I mean, how are you going to raise a new army in a city that you've just conquered?  That would be like the US expecting Iraq to spontaneously recruit an army after they had just conquered it.  Ridiculous isn't it? smile

I also dated a Korean woman once-she had some incredible talents which I won't mention here. smile  One thing I remarked when I went back to Toronto was the absence of really cute or hot women.  Oh sure there were some alright, but they were few and far between.  Even at places that should be chick magnets such as the Toronto Eaton Centre (mall).  One of my favourite pastimes when I go into Tokyo is just to wait at the train gates and watch them pour off the trains and walk by. They should be selling tickets to be able to see something like that.  And don't even get me started about the high school girls.  I swear to God I've never touched one before though! icon_wink  Don't get me wrong-back home I never gave those girls a second glance.  But here it's impossible not to. I dunno-maybe it's something in the water.

I'm up for it sometime-but first I have to get my copy from America and play through the tutorial and whatnot although if it's as similar to Panzer General as I think it is then it should be a breeze.

I could probably hook you up with a rumble controller if you want.  Shoot me a PM if you're interested.  I don't know whether AC supports it though.

Well I can understand that.  I grew up in a small town that was basically all white and I would never ever give an asian girl a second glance.  That changed in university however with more exposure.  Now I can honestly say that I prefer asian girls over white girls (although with experience I don't have the asian fever like I used to).  I still like white girls but they just cannot hold a candle when it comes to being "cutie".  The moms are great too.  Unlike back home (in my experience anyways) even if a Japanese mom is out pushing her kid around in a baby buggy, she is totally DONE UP!  None of this, 'Oh I have a baby kid so I'm going to use that as excuse to look like a slob'.

However, Grue, on the other hand, the GameSpot review states:

"PS3 owners are blessed with a slightly more solid frame rate."

and I've trusted GameSpot more than IGN in the past.

An AC programmer on QT3 basically that GS was incorrect- AC runs better on 360 than PS3.

On the other hand, if it's the person I think you're talking about, from all his posts that I've read I've found him to be extremely biased against the PS3.  And a bit of a dickhead to boot.

If the unit actually changes into a plane then I would suspect (never having actually played the game yet) that each unit boards individually.  Do you have to be adjacent to an airport to board or actually on the airport tile?  If the latter then you would have to wait to move the unit that you just embarked and then move the new unit onto that position.  Again I'm just guessing here as I've never actually seen the game.

Wow 9.1 that's great. I played the demo and enjoyed it a lot.  I thought it was a little action heavy though.  Hopefully there is more exploring and puzzle-solving.  Still I would definitely like to play this one.  It's not a Day 1 purchase for me (almost no games are) but it's definitely on my "must play sometime" list.
4800  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Panzer Tactics DS on: November 13, 2007, 03:35:48 AM
Here are some impressions I stole from Gamefaqs from a seemingly very mature poster-if only there were more of those over there! Also, one of the developers of the game is responding to questions in one of the threads (Beat the developer) or something like that.

Quote
Iíve gotten as far as the last scenario in the German Campaign (Stalingrad) and based on what I seen so far I can confidently say the Panzer Tactics is an awesome game. In almost all facets it has exceeded my expectations of what I could have expected for a turned based WWII wargame on the DS. This is not to say that the game doesnít have some flaws (the non-historical tank release dates and their associated data, more on this in a separate post). However, this does not detract from the game play and I think they did a good job with their other unit choices. The game mechanics are good and they have made some significant improvements on this aspect compared to its closest relative, the original Panzer General (PG). I will also say that from my perspective the mechanics make the gameplay superior to Advance Wars (AW). Now that will get me in trouble with the AW people (Iím a big fan of those games as well). But I come from the original cardboard counters days.

A quick comment of what I wonít talk about. Sound, I never play with in on and so I couldnít care less. Also, Iím not preoccupied with graphics, functionality is what I want.

Some general comments on the differences from AW (improvements from a wargame perspective). I saw criticism that the maps were too big and there were too many units. Compared to AW this is partially true. The maps are bigger. However, the number of units is comparable and less than some AW battles. From my perspective this is a plus for PT as the lower unit density allows for greater mobility and the opportunity to maneuver. This is one of the real operational advantages in warfare. The use of support fire is an advantage over AW. I donít expect to hear people discussing meat shields in PT. The campaigns are real campaigns with units moving from one battle to the next. Gone are the god-like CO powers, super CO powers and Tags of AW. I always though they were overpowering. PT does have mechanisms that allow players to gain limited local advantages. The officers, special unit abilities and commandos are very nice additions. They are costly and localized but they can allow a wise player to gain a critical advantage at the point of attack. AW does have more battles to fight and a map/battle editor; these are pluses for AW from a replay issue.

A few more general comments. PT is fundamentally different from both PG and AW in that One Hit Knockouts (OHKOs) or overstrengthed (PG) units no longer decimate all they encounter. Without the initiative mechanic from PG or the attacker fires first in AW, both sides tend to take damage. This wears down an attacker over time as it should. This forces stops for supplies and reinforcements that are now separate functions (in PG reinforcing also supplied). Supply also now costs money. Destroying units require coordination. This game definitely requires that a successful player use combined arms. Air superiority is essential, and with the movement distances and limited visibility reconnaissance is important.

In a separate post Iíll discuss the unit interplay which is mostly good. Iíll also discuss the biggest flaw in the game, the non-historical release dates and performance data for the tank units.

All in all a great game so far. Unless further play changes my mind the best game ever for the DS.
