Well, I was on the fence.  But my my local EB had a single copy, which I bought.  I played through the first 6 or 7 tutorials (a couple hours of play time).  I like what I see, but I've only scratched the sruface in terms of the depth of the game (there appears to be a ton of depth and details).

It's alot like Advance Wars, but not quite as friendly.  And it seems much more detailed.  I'll give more details after I've played some "real" missions.

More impressions please! I am ordering some games from the US tomorrow and I am hoping that this is good so I can pick it up as well.
4722  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Holy Crap, the 360 outsold the PS3 in Japan last week... on: November 09, 2007, 01:48:06 AM
Well considering that the Xbox 360 just had their biggest game release of all time that's not too surprising.  What IS surprising to me however is that the PSP outsold the Wii! Wow!  PSP is really coming into its own.

Well I'm gonna go with 08.  I think I would probably enjoy both but while the depth of 2k8 really appeals to me, I don't think I would take advantage of it enough to make it worth it.

If you have the option to rent both games for a week first I would suggest that option instead.

Unfortunately since I live in Japan I don't really have that option.  I suppose the correct answer is that it's difficult to go wrong either way?
4731  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / NHL 2k8 vs 08-which to get? on: November 05, 2007, 10:16:38 AM
I'm thinking joining the ranks of current gen console owners buy throwing my hat in with Sony and I wanna pick up a hockey game but I'm not sure which one to pick up.  I've been playing a fair amount of my last hockey purchase, NHL 2k3 and been having a lot of fun with it.  From the other NHL threads I've gathered that they are both strong contenders.  It seemed that NHL 08 had an edge with most of the forumgoers around these parts.  Is this still unchanged?  I like the depth of the 2K series but I've heard that the framerate is absolute shiite on the PS3.  I was also looking at some videos and for some reason the rink looks really strange to me-like way too narrow and the players look too big for it.  On the other hand I really like the dynamic camera that the 2k series seems to use.  I also like the deep franchise mode.  Is NHL 08 a better "pick up and play" type game?  I only ask because my potential teammate is my Scottish roommate who has started really getting into the 2k3 game so I don't want something with super super advanced controls that would really bog a hockey newbie down.

What do you guys think?  Remember I'll be going with the PS3 version of whatever game I get.
4732  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / US PS3=CDN PS3? on: November 03, 2007, 09:51:28 AM
Just saw this little story at Gamespot-not sure if it's news to anyone.  The new 40gig and 80gig PS3's are being released at the same price in both Canada and the US!  I'm assuming that this is the first time that consoles have ever been equally priced in the two countries since...forever?
4733  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anyone picking up a new 40 GB PS3? on: November 02, 2007, 01:50:43 PM
Oooh a 39,000 yen PS3 is actually only $320 Canadian!! and I get 10% Bic Points at Bic Camera! That makes for like...a $290 CDN PS3!
4734  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone picking up a new 40 GB PS3? on: November 02, 2007, 01:24:13 PM
At first I was appalled at the thought of not having backwards compatibility.  But now that I think about it, it seems like quite a good deal.  First off, it's down to $399 or 39,000 yen which for me would only be about $350.  Secondly, I read that they have a 65 nm chip and are much more power efficient than the old PS3's and that they are even quieter.  It comes with a reasonably large HD at 40 gigs and it comes with wi-fi.  It still has an extremely worthwhile Bluray player as well to boot.  The only downside is that it has lost its backwards compatibility.  But now that I think about it-I don't really give a damn about backwards compatibility.  I mean, the PS2 had backwards compatibility as well and I played a few PS1 games on it but I honestly can't remember the last time I played a PS1 game.  In fact, I haven't really even been playing the PS2 games either!  So the more I think about it, the more the PS3 seems like a great deal!  Oh and I forgot that the PS3 is finally starting to get some good games out! So am I missing anything here? Any reason to not pick up one of these new versions?  Has anybody gotten one yet?

Can Resistance be played with a mouse and keyboard?  Because I tried it in the store but console controls absolutely blow.

Highly unlikely.  You just need practice if you haven't played many console FPS.

But I thought the PS3 was supposed to be able to accept any USB mouse and keyboard?  Wasn't Sony going to force developers to implement mouse and keyboard control so that it would be standard for games like this?

All my friend who purchased PS3 are using mostly as DVD/Blue-ray player and they are hard-core gamers.

I've noticed this is said allot, like whenever talk comes up for reasons to justify a PS3. Pretty much its said every time one of these threads comes up.

Not saying it isn't true but when that feature is one of the few good tings you can say about the system its pretty easy to see why its doing to badly.

Hint: In case people don't get at what I'm saying...its about the games.

Then how do you explain the Wii's success? smile

Yes simply powering on the PSP does not connect it to Windows.  You actually have to go into your PSP menu and select USB mode-this sounds like it might be your problem.

Initial impressions-the game is quite fun. The camera is quite crap.  I really love being able to rotate the camera 360 degrees and this game doesnt seem to allow me to do that.  Destructive terrain is awesome.  So is opportunity fire.  There is no grid.  If you have enough points to squeeze out moving a little closer to that wall then you can do that.  Actually I'm not a big fan of that system-I love the grid system.  With no grid there's no cursor either so you just have to use the left and right shoulder buttons to select your other characters.  Everybody seems to have two weapons. A normal weapon that has unlimited ammo (or is melee) and a bigger weapon that has limited ammo.  The maps are pretty huge so you pretty much need to look at the map screen to see what the enemy is doing because the game doesn't automatically centre on a moving unit.  That might be one bonus for the DS version.  But I cant imagine playing a game like this on the DS.

I can absolutely get that you folks are extremely busy.
I know you guys put a ton of work into the reviews and news.
I really, truly hope that the original post didn't sound unappreciative of that,
because I am (heck...as I said, I'm trying to go to the front page more
after that derailed thread the other day, because I don't want your effort
to be wasted). That thought crossed my mind as I was posting, and I chastised
myself saying "Not like you wrote a review yourself, genius."

And the truth is (which comes back to your point) that I don't feel
qualified to review it because I haven't played it enough.
I've put several hours into it, enough to know it is a far
superior entry to the oringinal DS title. But my own play time has
been sucked away by Phantom Hourglass, Eternal Sonata, WoW, etc.
Perhaps a quick-hit type of thing would be doable.

I think that in this particular instance, it might have been better
to not have a review of the title. This would be preferable to a review
that might lead some readers, who might have otherwise considered a purchase,
to another decision. It's a good Worms game, for all that entails.
If you like the series or have been considering trying it, this is a must-have.
If you don't like the core gameplay, this won't do anything to change your mind.

Your poem doesn't make any sense-there aren't enough rhymes in there.  Or are you trying to be Shakesperian?

Panzer Tactics should be out on Oct 31st I believe.  The website has 3 new videos up detailing the game! Looks great!  It looks like a straight-up Panzer General for the DS.  You even get Fame (Prestige) points that you use to purchase new units.

If you only knew...

Runway/taxiway incursions are my second biggest air safety concern (after fatigue).  Airports can be a confusing mess to navigate, especially in peak traffic hours with horrible ATC frequency congestion and in bad weather/low vis.  I actually like going into smaller municipal airports as they are more straightforward.  But O'Hare/Newark/LGA and their peers just plain suck, suck, suck!  Taxiing out my stress level is high, after takeoff, my stress level drops dramatically.  Then on approach it starts ramping back up. with the landing/clearing the runway phase being my personal most stressful time of a flight.  Consistently over the years the number of incursions on the ground hasn't improved at all, despite inflight problems remaining quite low.

Edit:  Oh, I don't agree with not disclosing the info.  I don't know what they plan to do with the results, but I'd hate to see all that time and energy and money wasted and the lessons learned not put to good use to improve things.

I always wonder after landing, "how in the hell do they know where to go?"

The number of copies MGS has sold is completely and utterly irrelevant to the quality of the writing and cutscenes. Halo has featured poor writing and a convoluted plot for 3 games and has sold far more than the MGS series-shall we compare?

Just being devils advocate here but I thought I would compare on Wiki.

Halo: 5 million
Halo 2: 6.5 million
Halo 3: 5.2 million

MGS: 6 million
MGS2: 7 million
MGS3: 4 million

It's fairly neck and neck, but the MGS series seems to be winning by a nose (so far).
