However, Grue, on the other hand, the GameSpot review states:

"PS3 owners are blessed with a slightly more solid frame rate."

and I've trusted GameSpot more than IGN in the past.

An AC programmer on QT3 basically that GS was incorrect- AC runs better on 360 than PS3.

On the other hand, if it's the person I think you're talking about, from all his posts that I've read I've found him to be extremely biased against the PS3.  And a bit of a dickhead to boot.

Well every time I play the demo I just enjoy it more and more.  Even the combat doesn't bother me so much now that the controls are becoming second nature.  I also love the jumping and how it's NOT like Tomb Raider (at least the older ones anyways).  I can make a jump from any angle I want and he ALWAYS grabs the god damn ledge!  I haven't missed a jump yet.  It's brilliant.

Rock Band party eh?  Well to each their own I guess!  I think it's bad enough that any grown man would strap a plastic guitar over his shoulder.  Still, I suppose there are far more destructive pastimes.
4687  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Panzer Tactics DS on: November 14, 2007, 03:52:28 AM
If the unit actually changes into a plane then I would suspect (never having actually played the game yet) that each unit boards individually.  Do you have to be adjacent to an airport to board or actually on the airport tile?  If the latter then you would have to wait to move the unit that you just embarked and then move the new unit onto that position.  Again I'm just guessing here as I've never actually seen the game.
4688  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3]Uncharted:Drakes Fortune on: November 14, 2007, 03:49:34 AM
Wow 9.1 that's great. I played the demo and enjoyed it a lot.  I thought it was a little action heavy though.  Hopefully there is more exploring and puzzle-solving.  Still I would definitely like to play this one.  It's not a Day 1 purchase for me (almost no games are) but it's definitely on my "must play sometime" list.
4689  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Panzer Tactics DS on: November 13, 2007, 03:35:48 AM
Here are some impressions I stole from Gamefaqs from a seemingly very mature poster-if only there were more of those over there! Also, one of the developers of the game is responding to questions in one of the threads (Beat the developer) or something like that.

Quote
Iíve gotten as far as the last scenario in the German Campaign (Stalingrad) and based on what I seen so far I can confidently say the Panzer Tactics is an awesome game. In almost all facets it has exceeded my expectations of what I could have expected for a turned based WWII wargame on the DS. This is not to say that the game doesnít have some flaws (the non-historical tank release dates and their associated data, more on this in a separate post). However, this does not detract from the game play and I think they did a good job with their other unit choices. The game mechanics are good and they have made some significant improvements on this aspect compared to its closest relative, the original Panzer General (PG). I will also say that from my perspective the mechanics make the gameplay superior to Advance Wars (AW). Now that will get me in trouble with the AW people (Iím a big fan of those games as well). But I come from the original cardboard counters days.

A quick comment of what I wonít talk about. Sound, I never play with in on and so I couldnít care less. Also, Iím not preoccupied with graphics, functionality is what I want.

Some general comments on the differences from AW (improvements from a wargame perspective). I saw criticism that the maps were too big and there were too many units. Compared to AW this is partially true. The maps are bigger. However, the number of units is comparable and less than some AW battles. From my perspective this is a plus for PT as the lower unit density allows for greater mobility and the opportunity to maneuver. This is one of the real operational advantages in warfare. The use of support fire is an advantage over AW. I donít expect to hear people discussing meat shields in PT. The campaigns are real campaigns with units moving from one battle to the next. Gone are the god-like CO powers, super CO powers and Tags of AW. I always though they were overpowering. PT does have mechanisms that allow players to gain limited local advantages. The officers, special unit abilities and commandos are very nice additions. They are costly and localized but they can allow a wise player to gain a critical advantage at the point of attack. AW does have more battles to fight and a map/battle editor; these are pluses for AW from a replay issue.

A few more general comments. PT is fundamentally different from both PG and AW in that One Hit Knockouts (OHKOs) or overstrengthed (PG) units no longer decimate all they encounter. Without the initiative mechanic from PG or the attacker fires first in AW, both sides tend to take damage. This wears down an attacker over time as it should. This forces stops for supplies and reinforcements that are now separate functions (in PG reinforcing also supplied). Supply also now costs money. Destroying units require coordination. This game definitely requires that a successful player use combined arms. Air superiority is essential, and with the movement distances and limited visibility reconnaissance is important.

In a separate post Iíll discuss the unit interplay which is mostly good. Iíll also discuss the biggest flaw in the game, the non-historical release dates and performance data for the tank units.

All in all a great game so far. Unless further play changes my mind the best game ever for the DS.

Hmm, seems like it might be a pass for me after all.  It sounds like one of those TBS games where I get too bogged down in learning the details that I forget to have fun, and I end up setting it aside before I really understand how to play.  Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, here I come!

Wonderpug I seriously doubt that you would get bogged down in this game.  It is basically a direct copy of Panzer General, the game that defined 'beer 'n' pretzels' wargaming.

Quote from: Frogstar on November 12, 2007, 02:17:30 PM

So, if you like that type of game (serious military sims with lots of units, unit data, terrain parameters, etc.), you'll probably love Panzer Tactics.

Here's a test. The following are some of the German Antitank units in the game: "5 cm PaK 38," "Sturmgeschutz III," "JagdPanther," and "8.8 cm AT Gun."  If (1) you like turn-based strategy games (or loved Advance Wars); and (2) that lists excites you, then you'll probably really like Panzer Tactics DS.  But I'm not a military history buff, so none of those units mean anything to me.

Well I think I know the answer to that question.  The first and the last are normal anti-tank guns and the second and third are self-propelled anti-tank guns.  and the 88 is way more powerful then the 5cm Pak.  Know I suppose I have a little military knowledge to know that but I'm no grog.  And I think I would easily be able to tell the difference if I had no idea what those were.  I mean, when you're buying units there's probably a little picture isn't there?  Something so you could tell whether or not it was self-propelled or not?  And obviously (usually) the more expensive the unit the more powerful it's going to be.  So already, somebody with no military knowledge already knows the same thing that I know.
I would highly recommend people to try this game.  I couldn't stand AW with those annoying fucking kids!  Just completely ruined it for me!  Again this game is basically a direct copy of Panzer General and PG was the game that got me over the hump and gently introduced me to the wide world of wargaming.! smile

Well I may have been one of the last people here who did not have at least one of the current gen machines, but no more! I just picked up one of the new 40gig PS3's complete with Spiderman 3 on BR.  Final price: 39,800 yen - 18,300 yen worth of Bic Points and then bought with my Cdn credit card = $181.43 CDN!
Not too shabby for a PS3! In fact that's almost $150 less than I paid for my PS2 and I bought it two years after initial release!  Lack of backwards compatibility is a bit of a bummer but the fact that I got a PS3 for less than the price of three PS3 games helps to assuage that feeling smile
Unfortunately I don't have time to play with it right now but I'm gonna get on tonight and download a crapload of demos!

4707  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Help me identify my TV on: November 09, 2007, 02:21:40 PM
Welll it does actually but not regular component. I found this on Gamefaqs on the Hardware page:

Quote
* D-Terminal
Supported Resolutions: 480i/p, 720p, 1080i/p
                       (support varies by display)
Supported Audio Types: Mono, Stereo, DPL1, DPL2
Picture Quality:       Great

D-Terminal is a type of video connector that is used exclusively in Japan. It
carries a component video signal in a single cable, but is otherwise no
different than the three cable connectors used in the rest of the world.

And according to my previous post, the D1 terminal "causes the signal format of the output of the video signal to be resolution-converted to 525i."  Does this mean that it will at least up-convert my PS3 games to 525i?  I suppose that's slightly better than 480p anyways I guess.  I'll be going out tomorrow and buying a D1 terminal connector for the PS3 tomorrow.

4709  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Help me identify my TV on: November 09, 2007, 07:03:24 AM
Well it's got this thing on the back:

I have no idea what a D1 terminal is.  I found this on a patent page:

Quote
Title:    VIDEO SIGNAL PROCESSING APPARATUS AND METHOD
Abstract:
A video signal processing apparatus and method for providing a high-quality image display effectively utilizing the resolution. A microcomputer (16) controls a reducing filter (66), a memory (67) and an enlarging filter (68). When the output format setting of a D-terminal (21) is a D1 terminal, the microcomputer (16) causes the signal format of the output of the video signal to be resolution-converted to 525i. When the output format setting of the D-terminal (21) is a D2 terminal, the microcomputer (16) causes the signal format of the output of the video signal to be resolution-converted to 525p. When the output format setting of the D-terminal (21) is a D3 terminal, the microcomputer (16) causes the signal format of the output of the video signal to be resolution-converted to 1125i. When the output format setting of the D-terminal (21) is a D4 terminal, the microcomputer (16) causes the signal format of the output of the video signal to be resolution-converted to 750p. The invention may be applied to digital video devices that process video signals.

So I'm guess that that means that my TV has the potential to display 525i.  And of course the PS3 only does 720i/p and 480/ip (and maybe sometimes 1080).  So I guess that means I'm stuck playing in 480p?

In that case what sort of connectors should I go with? S-video?  My TV doesnt have the component inputs, only those D1 inputs.
4710  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Help me identify my TV on: November 09, 2007, 06:40:31 AM
Well that's the thing, I know that there's a resolution change.  For example the bar along the top that pops up and gives you information on the channel is significantly smaller when you're changing from the Discovery HD channel than if I was changing from an SD channel to an SD channel.  So what I'm wondering is, does this mean that my TV might have 720 resolution?  Or is it more likely to just be 480p or something?  Or is it something in between?
4711  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Panzer Tactics DS on: November 09, 2007, 03:45:01 AM
Well I took a risk and ordered it online.  There are a couple of favourable impressions on Gamefaqs so hopefully I don't get burned! I look forward to playing some of you guys online in a couple weeks (when my copy arrives in Japan).

I'm planning on picking up a PS3 possibly as early as this Sunday and I'm just a little curious as to whether or not my television has any HD capability.  Normally I wouldnt suspect that it does.  It only cost about $400 and I bought it two years ago.  But for channels like Discovery HD for instance, there is a noticeable difference in clarity and resolution from the other normal channels.  So what I'm wondering is, well, what the hell does that mean? Is what my TV is doing only one step up from what the most basic TV's display?  It's a 29 inch Sony Trinitron and the model number is KV-29DS65.  However whenever I do a search for it on Google it usually comes up with just Japanese webpages and I can't seem to get much information from it.  Is it possible perhaps that my television is an EDTV?

It's alot like Advance Wars, but not quite as friendly.  And it seems much more detailed.  I'll give more details after I've played some "real" missions.

More impressions please! I am ordering some games from the US tomorrow and I am hoping that this is good so I can pick it up as well.
