Yes definitely keep the remote.  Using a controller for a remote is possible, just like it was on the old PS2 but it's the most retarded thing you could possibly do.

I don't see why that is, I can do everything from my PS3 controller with movies so why is it retarded?

Obviously you know your way around the menu a lot better than me.  First of all, instead of just hitting a subtitles button I have to open up the menu during the movie and search around forever to find it.  And sometimes when I try to fast forward or reverse (without using the menu) I accidently skip forward or skip back a chapter. Or it goes all the way back to the beginning of the movie. Or sometimes when I do get it to fastforward I cant figure out how to get the damn thing to play.  Trust me it's just a whole lot of stress. Having a remote control would be far easier.  Otherwise all our tv's would come with game controllers instead of remote controls.

I don't get the DS.  I mean I like it I guess-it's got a few good games but a shit-ton of crap games.  I was just scrolling through the list of reviews for the DS on IGN and almost the entire first page read 4, 4.5, 5, 4, 5, 5.5.  All the way down the entire page!!  How could a system that has so many sub-par games do so well?  I just dont get it.
4563  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command on: December 30, 2007, 10:00:23 AM
Well according to the IGN review, the PSP version was total shiite and the DS version was (as I predicted) even worse.

And now I look at XBLive and other services where you just download to a hard drive and have no ability to make a hard copy.  Over time people adapt and accept these different forms.

Personally, I think it will be pretty cool to have everything remotely stored somewhere so I could go anywhere and watch/play/access anything whenever I wanted to.  Imagine going to a friends house and playing the game you own or watching the movie you already bought.  Or doing it on an airplane.  Or any other public access terminal.  That's the future, not owning thousands of silver disks.

I don't know.  With Xbox Live we're talking about $10 games (or less?) that you download and play for a few weeks, maybe a year at most and then forget about them.  That's a lot different from a $40 movie.  As for remote access, that's definitely cool but who's going to want to have to re-download their movies all over again every time they want to watch it somewhere else.  I don't know if movie companies would go for that either.  The files will probably be DRM'ed up the ass and only playable on the system on which they were purchased, a la Walmart movies.  And who will pay for the bandwith? We've already got Microsoft locking out non-paying members from accessing measly 500 megabyte demos.  Also what do you do when these companies that you download from bite the dust?  Walmart isn't gone but their download service is.  What if you had bought hundreds of dollars worth of movies that are now tied to one computer?
4565  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Ever heard of Afghanada? on: December 30, 2007, 07:41:42 AM
No this is not another one of those clever American politician puns such as Canuckistan.  It's a CBC radio drama about Canadian soldiers fighting in Afghanistan.  My folks bought me Vol 1 and Vol 2 for Christmas and I've listened to at least the first six episodes so far and I'm loving it.  It really does a good job of getting across what the troops are going through over there and I can't help but feel the same emotions that the characters in the story are going through as I listen to it.  It has really piqued my interest about what is going on over there.  I'm ashamed to admit it but until I started listening to this series I had very little interest and even less knowledge about what is happening over there and I suspect that it's the same most most Canadians (unfortunately).  Anyways I highly recommend it.  All Canadians should give it a listen and I'd even recommend to all the Americans on here as well although I will admit the possibility that you might have to be Canadian to get a lot of it.  Nothing personal of course it's just one of those things.  Just like how the show Due South could be a mega-hit in Canada but in the States was more of a meh-hit.

Afghanada Vol 1

The price is definitely right-you can get it for about $30 on Amazon.

I went into a used clothing store today that just opened last week.  It's probably not your typical used clothing store-a lot of the stuff in there seemed quite classy and sometimes a little expensive.  They had a bunch of beat up Air Jordan 1's in a display case for 40,000 yen! ($370).  Anyways I look around and I come upon this briefcase.  It's a little beat up but I really like the feel of it.  Nice leather and feels really tough.  I take a look at the price tag-4000 yen (bout $35 or so).  The brand name is something called Jack Georges-it means nothing to me but I write it down in my schedule book and head for home.  When I get home I do a little search on Google and find basically the exact same briefcase (albeit a newer version).  Price tag? $450 bucks!  Cripes!  So I head back out to the store and buy it.  Think I've bought a fake?  I doubt it because Japanese usually don't go for fakes-they want the real thing.  I'm no expert when it comes to imitation but it seems like the real thing.  Maybe since it's an American brand nobody thought it was worth anything?  Or maybe I'm just being silly and older briefcases depreciate like crazy?

Here are the photos for comparison.  Whatever the truth is, I'm happy with it.  I feel like all I need to do now is go out and get my PhD and become a university prof and I'll be set!:D

I've always wondered how many people collect games assuming they'll go back and play them again, but then they never do. Gaming turns out to be an expensive hobby if you fall into that trap. If you rent, or buy and then make an immediate auction upon completing the game you can usually get way with only spending $7-$15 on a game.

But if you pay $60 for a game, convince yourself that it belongs in your replay collection, but then never play it again- you can easily burn through several hundred to a few thousand dollars a year.

I never pay $60 for a game.  I usually wait till it's about $40 or even 29.99.  And I will also buy used.

For those of you who think that the next big thing with movies will be video downloads and not Blu-ray or HD-DVD (a completely ridiculous theory in my opinion), I present this:

http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/27/wal-mart-shuts-down-video-downloads-after-a-year/

If one of the most powerful companies can't get a download service to work then who could.  I for one, will always demand my media in the form of a hard copy and so will everyone else who isn't a techno-nerd.

It gets more and more interesting.  Pakistani government accuses Al-Queda of perpetrating the assassination and Al-Queda denies it.  Government and representatives of Bhutto's party disagree on how exactly she was killed (I'm not sure what difference it makes whether she was shot in the head or was killed by her sunroof).

I haven't gotten anything at all in my spam folder or in my inbox via Gmail.  Hmm.

Lucky you. I get 20-30 pieces show up in my spam folder a day. Thankfully they all end up in there instead of my inbox, but it's still annoying. I prefer Hotmail's way of doing it - they just never show up (in the spam box or anywhere).

I have both a GMail account and a Hotmail account.  I've always found using Hotmail to be, by far, a more preferable experience, in really any aspect.  My only complaint about Hotmail was when my account size was limited to like 5mb, despite GMail offering like 2gb at the same time.  Now account size isn't an issue, and my only complaint is gone (I think they are both around 5gb).

I detest Hotmail.  I have account but haven't really used it much since I signed up with Gmail almost 5 years ago now.  What does Hotmail have that Gmail doesn't just out of curiousity?  If it wasn't for Gmail then you would still have a 5MB Hotmail account today.

Interesting blurb on penny arcade about mods:

Quote
Mods need to come over on memory cards for some inexplicable reason. Indeed, gamers lured by the promise of the $400 forty gig machine (or those who purchased the twenty-gig, as I did) don't even have the slots to use mods built in. Oh, you weren't aware? I'm sure they'll be glad to hear that.

Looks like there's been a "correction" issued by the Penny Arcade guys, specifically Tycho, on this matter.  And I say "correction" in quotation marks because it's the most half assed thing I've ever read.  Basically he blames Epic's Mark Rein for his being wrong.  Mark seems to have written a perfectly courteous email and Tycho responds with sarcasm.  Mark suggests that you don't need a memory card to transfer mods, that you can use any old USB key or even an Ipod and Tycho completely skips over the first part and makes a sarcastic reply about needing to install Linux on your music player before you can transfer mods.

I must say I've lost a fair amount of respect for the PA guys.  I'll keep visiting their site because they make funny comics but from now own I'll be taking everything they say with a large grain of salt.

I'm on Chapter 6 now which I guess means I might be about 2/3 of the way through.  This might be one of the first games that I actually finish since beating FFT about 8 years ago (yes I'm bad at finishing games!)

It's got a few quirks but I've enjoyed the ride so far!  Story is a bit bleh for me and I feel little attachment to most of the characters.  However things start picking up around Rouen.  I hope I can beat this so that I can finally open up Brave Story New Traveler!
