Justin and I took a look at the Xbox One over the last month, tallied up what it does well, what it doesn't, and what we think Microsoft can do to fix it.

How'd we do?
Very good article. Do you have one coming for the PS4?
162  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Re: Books Read 2014 Edition on: January 02, 2014, 02:05:07 AM
I read 32 which was two more than my goal of 30 for last year and an all time high for me. I could have done more but I had a busy December and ended with a tome (very interesting though!) about Marie Antoinette when I could have polished off a couple of regular sized novels. If you have Goodreads then please add me from the Goodreads thread.

It's the new year again! Time for another bump! I blew through my annual goal of 30 books this year and probably would have set an unbreakable record (for myself) had it not been for a pretty busy December. Going to go for a goal of 35 this year.

I had to step away from the game when I got to the section where you drop down a level on your own ("we'll just wait right here for you to kill everything") where I died many clicker deaths, seemingly no matter what I did. Need to get back to it.
Yes that was an extremely difficult section. I tried sneaking and taking them out but I was always seen and mobbed. I ended up just running through and then getting myself elevated and in a corner and killing them all.
I am a third of the way through now and while my jaw is not literally on the floor it is literally dropped open practically the whole time I am playing it. I must look like a damned fool while I'm playing but I can't help myself. My favorite trick is using a bottle to get about 3 clickers to gather together and then using a single molotov on all of them.
Some of the sneaking parts are tough but I'm not bothered because it's so easy to restart an encounter and when the sneaking does work it gives you such an awesome sense of satisfaction!

No more speculation! I need hard numbers! It's my drug of choice. They ought to release console numbers every week like they do in Japan.

Interesting anecdotal stories. I find it hard to believe that the PS4 is THAT popular. Sony's production must really be constrained.
170  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Re: Crowdsourced! Best video game novels / comics on: December 23, 2013, 10:34:32 PM
I usually make a point of not reading video game novels. My TBR list of "real" books is so large that I don't have the time. That said I did enjoy the first Mass Effect novel and I do have the whole Republic Commando series by Karen Traviss to read. I also read a bunch of Doom books when I was in high school but I doubt they have aged well.  smile

Numbers really mean exactly zero right now. We're probably going to have to wait about 3 or 4 months before we can even guess what actual demands are like. That's when the real fun will begin!

As a public face for Microsoft's gaming division, it's Major Nelson's job to "spin," which is really just a negative way to say "marketing and promotion." There's nothing wrong with it. Every commercial you watch on TV for every product is doing the same thing.

Apparently MS did a damn good job of it too, because despite being significantly higher priced and suffering months of bad PR, they still managed to sell a shit ton of units. Sony Defense Force - MISSION FAILED. Please return to base.  icon_biggrin

Considering Sony outsold the XB1 on MS' home turf, wouldn't that be a MISSION SUCCESS  ninja

nope, the SDF should have stopped anyone from buying the XB1.  Even one sale was a failure on your part, let alone 909,000 and counting.  effin' new school SDF, it's like comparing New Direction to New Kids on the Block.
You're confusing the Sony Defense Force with the Sony Assault Force.
LOL. Sony doesnt need a defense force anymore fortunately. They don't need an assault force either.

If you guys hadn't noticed, I was kidding and not taking a shot at anyone - I'm not 100% satisfied with the console, and my annoyances are tempered with the reality that this is a launch and there is stuff that simply doesn't work yet.

There isn't a doubt in my mind that the 180 they took put them behind, and it shows. And you know what? When I'm changing games, and have to get up to switch disks? THAT is where I'm giving you all the finger.

The more I think about Harks' suggestion, whereby instead of a heartbeat, your console simply had to be online to have the certificate removed when trading in - well that just makes perfect sense. For all the disk games I have right now, I'm seriously considering simply going the way of CoD:G and Killer Instinct on games that may never leave my library. Buy em online and deal with it that way.

My concerns with that fall into storage - they'd better get that external disk setup sooner rather than later.
Why are you buying disks? All the games are available as a download.

There's no may about it really. Unless there's a cockpit recorder. It's unfortunate that the driver felt the need to speed but I'm guessing that driving a porsche probably does that to a person. The lesson that I'm taking away from all of this is that when I have a porsche, nobody drives it but me.

Well it's a bit early to say anything right away as Microsoft isn't obligated to respond every time Sony reports something. We'll have to wait until the NPDs come out. I think the xbone will have respectable numbers if not as good as Sony.
Sony will get a huge initial boost in Japan because all of the console gamers will buy one right away but then I forsee a huge drop-off by the second week. It's always that way in Japan. The people who buy games are very passionate and do so right away and everyone else doesn't bother. There's rarely a long tail for any product in Japan. I would think they would see a 400-500k boost in the first week even with the sad state of the console market over here.
183  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Re: 2920 Days until launch. Which system are you getting? on: December 03, 2013, 09:56:17 PM
I don't think it's fanboyism as much as it is schadenfreude due to Microsoft's hubris. I don't want to see Microsoft fail at all but I will enjoy seeing them come in consistently number two if that's what ends up happening.
As for the posting of numbers, I won't begrudge Microsoft for not doing so as Sony essentially took their ball and went home the entire last gen when it came to posting results.

Last night I was trying to show it off to some friends and pretty much none of the special things like voice activation or snapping/unsnapping was working well.

Voice recognition with a bunch of other people in the room/background noise is an exercise in futility. I had the same experience at Thanksgiving, and with multiple people milling around (even when they were attempting to be quiet), it just got confused. It's even worse if you have people screaming "Xbox watch porn!!!" at it constantly. When I play in the evenings after the kids are in bed, voice recognition is nearly 100%.
Your Thanksgivings sound pretty funny.

It's been disabled because of euro launch. Disasterous timing Sony.

Well I guess I will have to change my vote as I ended up flipping mine for $220 in profit. While I like the sound of being able to buy a new one for about half price, overall I'm sad because I bought it to play it not flip it but ever since our baby was born I just do not have any free times to play games at all. I could just go out and rebuy it but now that I've sold it I feel like I've gone past a certain point and I'm much less likely to buy again. That makes me sad.

Something we realized while playing last night - you can't talk about the xbox while playing the xbox, because it keeps bringing up the menus smile

So we need to come up with an appropriate code word for the xbox. Something along the lines of "sham-boogie" or "sleestak" might work.

I suggest we pick one of these:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Father of Lies
Lord of the Grave
Lord of the Twilight
Shepherd of the Night
Old Grim
Father of Storms
Caisen Hob or "Old Hob"

How about 'Boner? As in," Hey, what do you think of my 'Boner?"
"Looks great, do you mind if I play with it for a while?"

I will say the controller was AWESOME. Like the 360 but the sticks feel way better. Why oh why can't Sony give up the horrifically bad Dualshock design?! I am still yet to see a playable demo for either system anywhere, so I still haven't had a chance to hold the DS4.

If you had, you would know that they DID give up on the horrifically bad Dualshock design. The PS4 controller is excellent.

They still have the left stick in the position that is not my personal preference so I remain skeptical, but I would like to pick one up and feel it for myself.
Fixed that for you. Essentially, the controller difference is down to personal preference now.
199  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Re: Did you change your allegiance? on: November 25, 2013, 03:16:48 PM
I'm still with Sony. I would love to have two consoles (or more!) but at this stage in my life that's just not possible. I don't have time for even one and I don't think my wife would forgive me for getting another one.
Anyways I was pretty satisfied with Sony's exclusives last gen and MS and I did not get off to a great start this gen with their initial plans for all video gamers. That combined with the fact that I don't find the Kinect or TV aspect at all compelling and the $100 price difference and the overall (if slight) power advantage and my personal belief that this gen the PS4 will be the lead platform for most games means that I'm sticking with Sony.
That said, if you have the means and opportunity to get both consoles then by all means that's the best thing to do.

At the risk of being abused for posting negative xbox information, I'm going to leave this right here. It seems fairly significant if you are living in Europe (or just the UK?) I'm not familiar with this sort of thing so perhaps a fix is fairly easy to implement but if it is true then it really makes you facepalm. This type of North American-centric thinking seems pretty representative of the problems MS has had in the past (huge controllers and consoles in Japan) and possibly in the future with the Xbox One.

Edit - Ahh Ralph beat me to it.
