if they had dropped the raiden half of mgs2 onto the cutting room floor, i would have loved the game.  it became way too meta for me to understand and it pushed the conversations as the primary focus.

instead of having great fights against memorable characters ala mgs1, i barely remember any of the foes from 2, except having to fight a fat man on skates (wth?!)

even the fight against the gear is foggy now, whereas i remember every part of the gear fight in mgs1.

that's just shoddy design right there.  by the time i got around to 3, i had already preferred splinter cell style stealth instead.

I played this a good bit the last couple of nights.  Did the first assassination.  I did all the investigations there and also visited all the view points and helping citizens parts.  I definitely love the atmosphere of the game, mixing Matrix-like computer stuff with with a ancient setting.  If the game is doing all the same things for the first kill, but 8 more times, I guess I can see how people might get tired of it.  I guess I will see if the game changes any as I progress.

the basic mechanics don't change too much, but the additional weapons and moves does change how combat works.  counters, short swords, throwing knifes, dodging, counter-grabs, and defense breakers are added to your repertoires of moves.  plus, the climbing gloves are actually quite useful as they can aid your escape and make falling off a building less lethal.

the game does a good job of building your abilities and lethality from a truely weak position to one of bad-ass power towards the end.  the assassinations are all similar enough in their way, but the execution (pun not intended) of each differs for each.  it's not hitman style differences, like poisoning or staged accidents, but it's not like you can just run up willy-nilly to each mark and stab him in the neck.

tbh, it's the build up and the side missions which will either kill your motivation or not.

does this mean all of our japanese and european "friends" will no longer be able to log in?  and if we have them, will they lay the smack down on us?

that would really suck the life out of my addiction if they start banning anyone with a non-us region tag on their systems.

wow, no mii support in fire emblem?  that's unforgivable.  every game could benefit from the addition of a cutesy depiction of a person shoehorned into the cutscenes.

my god, what a stupid thing to review on.  what, did they drop resident evil 4 or metroid 3 down because they didn't use them either?

i watched the video review, and yeah, he comes off more like a youtube reviewer than a paid "professional", so if he was let go due to a changing of the guard, then i can respect that.  gs will have to prove that they aren't just paying face talk that idea though.
9685  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Assassin's Creed Reviews on: November 30, 2007, 07:27:28 PM
i got the strat guide for $10, moreso because i thought it would offer some interesting stuff beyond the usual, and aside from the map, it's pretty much useless.  it details how to climb the surfaces of the view points and how to find the stuff you get on the map as if you were going to skip them.

and yeah, even with the map, it's not always easy to ID where they are.  i have 5 left on the kingdom map and 1/4 left  in damascus.  one of the buggers in the roman ruins is not in an easy spot to get to and i have failed the jump every time i tried.

also, does the ending mean:

we get another AC game in the past with altair, or do you think we'll jump up to a different ancestor of desmond?  the last bit hints at least a few games.

Ugh, I went through EXACTLY that same situation with a grimy gameboy (original brick version) with the serial number scratched off, with no box, no receipt, etc.  I offered her double the trade-in value (I was in a good mood) and she instead demanded cash back for it. My goddamned district manager folded and gave in to here cash demand AND gave her a Gameboy Advance (this was just prior to the release of the DS for timeframe) to boot.  What did I get?  A lecture about the customer always being right and a writeup.  Ya never know how these things will turn out...

that's a huge load of bs by the gm.

"the customer..." is one of the biggest myth lines ever written, and i hate it.  no, the customer is not always right as there are people who are not worth your business.  only those who have never been on the other side of the counter believe that.  it's not a huge %, maybe one out of every 100 or so, but some people are just unworthy of the term "customer" the way they game and cheat the system and try to return every broken, beaten, and junk piece of equipment for cash, and won't think anything is wrong with it.  "if you don't give me money for this, i'm never buying anything here again."  great, so i won't be giving you a chance to defraud us again.  thanks for the promise, if you live up to it.

Mass opinion often forms the morality of a society.

If we were a cannibalistic society, then the movie ALIVE would have just been dinner theatre.

and they would have served bits of the cast at the opening.

not to derail a perfectly good derail, but anyone clueless enough to just look in the box and not check the thing out deserves the punishment they get from management.  if that kind of thing had happened back when i was working retail, they'd be on the fast track out to the unemployment line, after the holiday craze.  we got screwy requests for returns all the time, but that doesn't mean they were honored.  you just need to be observant and not fall for the con.

and now for a derail of my own.  a middle aged woman once came in with a return.  it was a cordless phone and it had caked on dirt and grime.  the bag it was in was from a piggly wiggly.  (strike one.  returns were for items in sell able condition)  we have no piggly wiggly stores in my state btw, so i was not surprised when she produced a receipt from a franchise store in a state halfway across the country.  (strike two.  franchise goods were not allowed returns at company stores.  bad rule?  it's arguable).  i then saw it was bought two years ago.  (strike three.  nobody takes returns that long after the purchase date outside of costco)  she demanded cash (strike three point five.  after 30 days, until 90 days, it was solely at the manager's discretion.  after 90 and it was exchange only.)  the franchise had charged her $30 more than the phone ever cost at the company store, and we would not refund more than the item cost.

she steamed and threw her head up with a "we'll see about that".  never heard about her again.  i'm just amazed at how people will try to game the system with the slimmest chance of success.

i wonder if he made some of the decisions which hurt blacksite.

From everything I've heard, Blacksite would've sucked 10x more without Harvey's involvement.  He's very respected within our cultish little development community.  If you want to see what hurt Blacksite, taking a look at the stock ticker for Midway over the past year should give you an idea.  I think poor tech hurt DX2 more than anything.

hmmm.  ok then, i can respect that he was part of why blacksite didn't release a horribly broken product and that midway pushed it out to get the holiday sales.  it's not like it hasn't happened before.  it's unfortunate that they could have had a great game and instead have a mediocre shooter with half-implemented ideas.  (squad control, morale, destructible environments)

i didn't go and i didn't follow the ads either.  one of my friends went to fry's and was able to grab a 750gb hard drive for ~80 and a network equipped external housing for 50.  and then he went to find the end of the line.

this was the store he went to were employees were selling spots in line for $100.

the line snaked around the store and up and down the main aisles multiple times.  an employee was at the end with a bunch of balloons to mark the spot.  he saw the flow and just put his stuff back and left.  as he put it, not worth the savings for an hour's worth of waiting.

the whole parking lot was full to the point of waiting in a line of cars the entire length of the aisle for a spot.  getting out took some effort too as you were boxed in by the cars waiting behind you.  i can't imagine bothering with the effort when it gets like that.  of course, he's always been willing to go that far for a deal as he's done that before.

the completionist in me is driving me to go through and get as much of the achievements as possible now, because i don't know if i'll go through again.  i said the same thing about bioshock, but after a playthrough, it's not going to be as fun slogging through the same grounds.  i may try it again in a year without the hud on, but that's not likely.

hence, even though i enjoy being a badass who can and has killed 30 in a single fight, i'm now running from every encounter to the rooftops so i don't have to.  i want to get the flags, but i don't want to face the idea of checking every area just to be double sure i didn't miss it.  at least with the templars, their chest is still there to show they are gone.  the flags are just gone for good.  it was satisfying to finally get that 60th templar though.
