9681  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / yup, another trip pimping thread. Houston in october on: October 03, 2007, 07:50:29 PM
my bil is getting hitched in a few weeks and wants some family to be present.  so it looks like i'll be around houston (specifically, missouri city) from the 17th to the 21st.  so, what kind of cool things can we look forward to?  i'll have a few days before the weekend if anyone wants to meet up.
9682  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Escapist: Zero Punctuation on: October 03, 2007, 06:54:53 PM
again, the last line in the video is worth pausing for.

while i do love the game, he nails a lot of the points.
9683  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Oh Snap! Phantom Hourglass is Out! Impressions abound! on: October 03, 2007, 06:40:36 PM
ok, so it's a toss up between cc for $5 off and the misc crap, or full price at tru with a strat guide, right?  i'm a little price sensitive at this point, so i'm favoring cc, but the guide sounds good to have too.

how big is the strat guide?  does it include info on all the ship parts, and how detailed is it?

i don't use many guides, even the odd one i buy, but for some games, it really helps to have one occasionally.
9684  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [DS] Glory Days 2 on: October 03, 2007, 06:32:11 PM
this one is very interesting, and i have considered picking it up a few times.  the main reason i haven't is the price and the relative short campaign.  if there was a bigger meta game to it, then it would be perfect.

if you get bored of it, i'd be interested in trading you for something.

9685  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 40GB Ps3 399.99 Are you in? on: October 03, 2007, 06:28:22 PM
i've got two games for the pee ess three, and both of them were used copies.  one for a good price and the other for a game i haven't played in months.  motorstorm is inbound from gamefly, so i'll try that too.  it's more to get a better impression than the demo, and i'm not sure i'll really like the full game anyways.  tbh, i'd rather they sent me airborne instead, but whatever.

my system has seen little gaming use outside of the few games of warhawk and a 1/3rd playthrough of resistance.  a little bit of shadow of the colossus as well. unfortunately, the big hitter halo has taken all of my time, and mp is growing on me.

at this point, the ps3 is a dedicated f@h machine.  i got it with the sony deal so i actually paid less for it than the rumored 40gb.

whacky tobacky from kotak-y!

while the thread of truth is plausible (bungie wanting to do more than halo vs ms wanting more sequels), it's unlikely that ms would let their star player leave.

it would be like take 2 letting rockstar leave.

1.  Login with your Live account at http://www.bungie.net/
2.  Link it to your gamertag.
3.  hit the link above for the group and click 'join'

this will let you upload pics, movies, maps from the game.  check the screenshot thread for info about the first too.  once you create something, go into file share from the game and upload it to the server.

so, you're going to double down and hope your luck turns out better?  i'd rather put that $20 towards a known good game, even if it costs more or a pre-order.

thanks for being the space monkey though.  i'll put this in the firm "avoid this game unless i get paid to take it and need a new case" category.

i remember knight rider 2000.  mostly, i remember seeing the hoff try to reinhabit his '80's character with little success and a new version of kitt after the interim 57 chevy.  also, i seemed to remember liking some of the music for some reason.

yeah, that happened to me for the second one as well, except the dumbass hadn't managed to die and was just tooling around in it, just out of reach.  i think he was pissed that i hopped out above ground for the first one and the aircraft landed on it side, dumping him out.  i finally got him to give me a lift over to the arbiter though, so at least that worked out.
9703  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: To anyone using a unlocked/modified iPhone: on: September 27, 2007, 07:29:13 PM
apparently the update is out now.  gizmodo has it but i haven't gone through the comments to see if it bricks or not.

after an initial gleaming, it looks like at&t service + 3rd party apps are fine after update, but you need to restore to default first.

with and unlocked sim, there's some reports of bricking, some saying update is fine, but it relocks to at&t service.

There's plenty of objective gametypes (depending on whether your predilection is capturing of flags, or arming of bombs, or, uh, kinging of hills, etc).  You may want to try the Team Tactical playlist, which has more of an emphasis on smarts than twitchiness.  The typical game in that playlist is five rounds of "first team to five kills", so you can't go running around like a crazy person.  It's a totally different pace than usual.

sounds good.  even though i must have died a hundred times in the later stages, i did try to avoid going all rambo and just charging in blindly.

well, i will definitely want to go through on coop on the harder difficulty levels, just for that experience, but i would like to get the skulls for the changes they add to scoring.  plus, the ending is a bit changed for legendary i hear, so i'd like to see that.

got a very Alien vibe from the ending.  i fully expect to see a spinoff series pick up in the far future with a new race finding the hulk and wiping a very thick layer of ice from the glass to reveal MC's face.

not sure what the extra ending stuff from the legendary completion is or could be, but i'm hoping to find out soon.

overall, i liked the game quite a bit than i thought i would.  i really enjoyed that late game sequence with the aircraft, especially the battle against the scarabs. a lot of aircraft flying around taking pot shots at one another and these mammoth tanks menacing anything that got close.  i brought one down near one of those snowy outcroppings and was able to jump right on to it's head.  raced up, ripped one of the plasma cannons off it's mounts and proceeded to blow the S out of it's core.  great fun, and got a nice view of it while i was taking off in the aircraft.

i loved the flamethrower.  really made level 8 much more manageable.  got a great Aliens vibe using it.

Technically, you can carry 6 grenades now!  You just can't figure out how to affix more than 2 of each type to your super cyborg armor.

wait a bit.  you'll see ninja

finished the game last night, took about 9 hours.  if you think the cannon/mg is cool, there's an even better variant of that later on.  i felt like a real badass at that point.

not only are the later mass battles fun, but they are huge.  to me, that makes up for having such a clean look throughout.

for what?  I'm not seeing any unusual ads....
For the video... Adblock seems to think the video itself is some sort of ad - I couldn't view it in Firefox either until I added escapemagazine.com to the whitelist.

that did it, plus adding videoegg to noscript.

9714  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What is the deal with downloadable PSP sites?? on: September 26, 2007, 09:53:23 PM
they are.  this is the same scam as those sites which claim to let you download full games and movies for free for a one time fee.  from what i've gleaned off other sites, they charge you to download the torrent file.  not exactly a good source if you ask me.

and yes, homebrew apps are available to play psp images.  if you own the disk, you can do this yourself, or so i've heard.  there's emulation for the older generations and some useful/unusual applications.  i haven't done anything more with my unit than n64 emulation and super mario 64.  it's a bit easier with the fat psp, but the slims already have a custom firmware out there.  it's only possible with a homebrewed fat/pandora's battery though.

ha! beaten to the punch.  oh well, i'll have to fall back on substance rather than speed.

But I played the first level of the game last night, in single player, so why isn't it showing my kills?

hmm.  not sure.  if you have it turned on, it will show up in the campaign record in the Score column.  it tracks whether you play solo or coop.  did you finish the first level or just a part of it?  i started the 7th campaign level and it doesn't show any stats from that just yet.

here's a faq on this

this could be a fun way to go through once you get all of the skulls.

O rly?  I suppose it tracks if you turn on point scoring... since I don't have that turned on.

it tracks even if scoring is off as i didn't know to turn it on before hand and have been playing the campaign without it.  it also tracks your medals, stuff like # headshots, vehicle kills and enemy types.  not sure what the "hero" enemy class is, but i have killed a few of them too.

what's odd is the number of medals you get in a play through.  i've got so many of them that a real life soldier would be forced to carry a huge placard just for parades. biggrin

played up past the end of level 6?  and even though it's not the best game of all time, i have had a lot of fun with it.  i should probably be able to finish it tonight.  i really wish i had turned on the coop campaign scoring, but apparently if you do you have to restart.

graphics wise, it has impressed me more with the same things which were cool in h1.  big open levels with little to no load between areas, transitions notwithstanding.  i really wish more games would take this approach as it makes the world seem larger and not just a collection of similar levels.  it also gives you the ico like experience of seeing areas you will get to in advance.  sure, level detail is spartan, but it's functional and suited for the gameplay.  this isn't crysis we're talking about.

favorite part so far:

Spoiler for Hiden:
seeing the scarab for the first time.  damn was that a big mother, and it had a pretty cool entrance.  i like the take down method too, although i wish it was possible to drag it down with heavy weaponry.  i was a little bummed that the tank cannon couldn't do more damage than the banshee's.  still a cool fight though.

oh, and the flood moment was actually cool. one, if came right after an awesome fight/cutscene, and it was done pretty well imo.  it was not dragged out as it was in h1.  i liked the insides of the flood ship too.  reminds me of the enemy ships in homeworld cataclysm.
