9681  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / EA BUYS DICE on: January 26, 2005, 08:49:24 PM
i was expecting this.  dice has been a big money maker for ea and for them not to buy when another pub might is risky.  sure, it now guarantees endless BF clones for the next 10 years, it ensures that dice will be around that long.

it also amazes me to think that with all the talk about the new systems, we haven't seen much yet in terms of games.  lots of talk, but talk is cheap.  (phantom) i do think that the big 3 will have showings at e3 though.
9682  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Johnny Carson has died on: January 23, 2005, 08:12:27 PM
it's eery the timing of his death came so soon after his name coming up again in the press.  i also heard about his jokes and letterman, and the radio station guys actually mentioned it how they thought we might lose him this year.  i don't think they expected it just days after, though.

good night, johnny.
9683  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Mercenaries Impressions on: January 22, 2005, 12:22:26 AM
the chop shop is just down the street from the mafia hq.  a large building with a few mafiosa in front.

i have noticed that your faction hit is so much smaller when you stay back out of range.  for instance, in a mafia mish to "dissuade" the SK by thwarting their attack on an NK base, i managed to stay back enough and didn't get any negative faction.  i did end up getting squished by an SK humvee who i think saw me blow up his buddies.

its odd they way npc's can end up targeting you for being in a battle.  i had an allied soldier shoot at me after i helped them and the chinese take down a small NK force.
9684  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Mercenaries - unlockable lucasfilim characters on: January 22, 2005, 12:17:27 AM
i unlocked jones the other day and from what i've seen, it resets when you reload.  i saved last night as indy and will report back if this is 100% true.

if not, i would guess that it would be a toggle code and you could use it again to change back.  just speculating though.

oh, and i did a perfectly flawless mission last night against the king of diamonds.

i notice that faction hits get much bigger in this round than they did previously.  my standing with the allies is low and i'm KoS to the south koreans.  time for a little bribery.

mercenaries is doing this to me right now.  i've been at odds to keep at eq2 during this time, as mercs is just so much fun.   i have been revisiting missions in my head and making plans for how i would do them over again.

i always know when i'm into a game when i check the impressions threads here and on OO to see if anyone has posted anything new.

i have that page bookmarked, big jake.  the came was called xenus beforehand and yes, the graphics make the game come off as budget, but the overall idea is great.  it's on my short list of games to watch, B level.

sorry to hear that this was the reason you asked about the xps gwen.

i had this happen to me a year ago, except it was my storage unit.  these guys were good, opening up every unit in 2 buildings (about 130) and taking the best stuff.  what they didn't take, they stored in their own locked units for a retrieval.  luckily, they never got that chance and the crime was noticed the day after they did it.  out of that, my wife and i lost 90% of our wedding gifts we had stored there, a large number of personal items such as old toys, and my entire pc cd collection up until 98 or so.  out of everything they took, we only ever recovered a few items containing personal information and a sleeping bag.  that's it.  that was also the last time i'll ever trust my stuff to someone else's storage.

good luck gwen.  hope they catch the guys.  they never caught mine.

i've been capping everyone, except for one lowly number who managed to get stuck underneath my humvee slywink.  the bonus money pays off enough to make it worth the hassle.  the danger to the extraction chopper makes it very important to fully clear the LZ, as it costs 25k to replace one of them.

haven't done the ace of clubs yet as i want to do all the missions first.  do the random missions change after an ace gets brought down?

i love blowing stuff up, and the control of the choppers and heavy machinery is spot on.  if only the t-54 had a barrel mounted mg.  i hate wasting AT rounds on rpg soldiers.
9691  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Inspiron XPS on: January 14, 2005, 06:20:32 PM
i've had one for a little over 2 months now, and its a great machine.  easily outperforms my desktop.  with that in mind, the battery life just plain sucks, but i wasn't expecting it not to be.  it gets just over an hour on battery save mode and that's without gaming at all.  the larger battery lasts ~2 hours, but no subwoofer in that one.  plus, the performance drops noticeably without external power.

i only use it plugged in unless i need to look something up that i have saved.  i imagine with the 9800 you have (i have the 9700, $350 was too much of an price increase at the time), you will probably have even more limited time off ac.  the fan is loud when gaming, but not leaf blower loud. i haven't seen any problems with heat, but with as much power is being used, keep those vents totally clear.

i am perfectly happy with this though, as the end result is a portable powerhouse.  played all of half life 2 with it, and it looks great at 1920x1200.  vampire also looks good

oh, i also would recommend not putting this on your lap for any major stretch.  one, its a bit heavy after a while, and two, the vents on the bottom could be blocked by fabric.

hope you enjoy yours as much as i do mine.

ok, so i decided to write up a whitepaper detailing the most recent threats to information security.  i have a head start on what i want to cover and also the various utilities to recommend.

what i would like to hear about from the people here (and cross post on OO) is what you use and why.  i plan to cover the full range of topics, so anything you use which reduces your risk of identity theft and similar threats, please let me know.
here are the topics i plan on covering

OS security
MS office applications
web browsers, both ie and alternates
viruses
spam
spyware
trojans
firewalls
wireless security
mail programs
instant messenging
online banking
encryption

my goal is to have this become a source of information for family, friends, and people here at work.  i intend to have the programs on a disk, and make it available for the average user to get a good foundation for keeping information safe.

any advice, suggestions are much appreciated

that's a pretty solid deal. However you could check out all your local Sears and see if they have the Metroid Prime bundle in stock, it's 50 bucks on clearance brand new...

For the most part a new one is 99 bucks new and about 60 used.

i just checked the sears and while they had the bundle, it still rang up at $100.  i would have got it for $50, and a few games for the wife.  too bad though.

my wife got me the chronicles of riddick dvd (directors cut too) after seeing the icon for the game on the desktop.

sorry to hear that about your wife ron.  i hope she has good luck and gets a better job than the one she had.  any manager who fires someone just before christmas deserves a kick in the ass, preferably by someone with cleats on.
9713  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Anyone have experience setting up WiFi? on: December 26, 2004, 08:41:09 PM
i should clarify.  the information that vagabond quoted regarding static/dynamic ip addressing was targeted to the router's LAN addressing.  of course, the external ip you get from the ISP could be of either type.  the company knows that a static is more useful to a person as it allows you to host a web page or game server, so they charge you for that option.

basically, if you assigned a static ip to the router's external, or WAN address, you would lose your connection to the net.  especially if you used an ip in the most common internal ranges for home routers, in the 192.168.x.x or 10.0.x.x ranges.  those ranges are specifically for internal use.

i realize this is probably much more information than you need, but it's in my nature to teach people about this stuff.  disregard if uninterested.  biggrin

In New Zealand I'd say about 40% of our games come in DVD cases (double-thickness, they're the same size as the "new" small game boxes, which they still come in for retail display purposes). It's great. The manuals need not suffer either.

exactly.  i can think of a few games that did this over here

thief 3
commandos 3
legacy of kain: defiance
PoP: warrior within

the manuals haven't been huge with these games, but they didn't need huge ones to begin with.  there was certainly more room than they used though.
9716  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Almost Genius... The Autobiography of Drazzil on: December 23, 2004, 06:41:36 PM
o....k.  how bout we get back on topic now eh?  whether or not someone served in actual combat or whether someone was a troll or not, was not the purpose of draz' post.   let's just move on.  life is too damn short as it is

as for draz, i know exactly how you feel regarding luck in life and difficulty with math.  i've always felt i had bad luck in small matters and good luck in critical ones.   despite my best efforts, i've never broken a bone or been in a major accident.  i've survived death once, when i got so sick my blood pressure dropped to 70 over 40, so weak i couldn't walk straight.  what makes this event lucky is my dad was staying with his girlfriend at the time and i had the house to myself.  a friend of mine came over to hang out and when he saw me, he got a neighbor to help.  i was in the hospital for a while as they pushed fluids into me via IV.  quite an odd experience if you've never had one.  at another time, i knocked myself unconscious after i hit my head on a 3/4 in dia bolt.  tore a strip of flesh out of my scalp and needed stitches.  i still don't know how long i was out and it's a good thing i woke up on my own.  it would have been a few hours before anybody found me.

i haven't had good luck regarding lost relatives.  my grandfather died right after i was born, hit on the sidewalk by a drunk driver.  my uncle was hit as he tended to his car-struck dog and dragged for several hundred yards.  they never caught the driver, and it's assumed he was drunk too.   one of my grandmothers died the morning after i went to visit her.  she called to me as i slept in the next room, and i was the one who called for help.  my great-grandmother died when i was living with her, after a long illness.  i was one of the first people to see her gone.  my second grandmother had a stroke, but she fought through the rehab and made a fairly full recovery.   life has made an episode of ER out of me.

my overall childhood was one of moving around and different "new moms", as my dad was and is not very good with women.  parents split when i was 5.  he's good enough to get their attention and date for a while, but neurotic enough to make anyone go crazy.  he's also prone to both anger and depression.  unfortunately, i learned the behavior long ago, and i still work at it today.  when i think of how happy i am with my wife, it actually bums me out.  i could see something like what happened to him happen to us.  i see that if i follow his footsteps, i would lose her, and rightfully so.  i love my parents and have been given a chance to know a great stepdad, who taught me more than he knows.  in that, i see my parents' divorce as something positive.

i don't want to leave this on such a bad note, so i'll say this.  in everything we do in our lives and everything that happens, some good can come of it.

the footage of the plaintiff was taken when she was 17 years old, she claims. That not only renders the content illegal, but her status as a minor negates any consent she may have given to the game's developers to take and/or use the material.

9719  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / I done Broke Something on: December 22, 2004, 10:12:10 PM
unfortunately, it looks like the file is ntldr.exe, which is the nt boot loader for the os.  i had this happen in class last year, and it required a reinstall to get it working again.  even though the file was present and i could copy a new one over from a working install, the os wouldn't start.  best case would be to boot up with the drive as a slave and copy files off it to another partition or a seperate drive.  if you had a windows ERD you could attempt a fix, but unless you made one beforehand, you can't get one now.

last shot would be to reinstall windows over the top, although that might not fix it either.
9720  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / With the next generation of consoles, will our PC VC's be... on: December 22, 2004, 10:02:32 PM
same thing was predicted with the last generation, specifically the xbox.  it didn't happen then and it won't happen now.  here's why:  the consoles will use either nvidia or ati video cards in them, and through the consolidation that a console has over a pc, games will look and play better than what's currently out for pc.  all that stuff about not having to code to the lowest common denominator.  but, as the years go by, the console slowly becomes outdated compared to current pc tech.

look at the xbox now.  games that were considered beautiful at the systems launch are no longer seen as having the greatest graphics.  even when developers learn all the tricks and we get better looking games as a result, eventually they get to the end of what is possible for a system.  meanwhile, the pc has slowly been making its way up the upgrade ladder and games end up looking better for it than a console.

it's pretty much inevitable with the current system we have.

oh, and you should have gotten a dell instead.  i can upgrade the video card.  when they bring out the mobile x800, i'll get me one.
