9682  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / NBC and Apple part ways. say goodbye to itunes episodes on: August 31, 2007, 08:50:30 PM
looks like apple has laid down the banhammer on nbc shows, calling it quits before the contract expires.  the split is mainly because nbc wanted to raise it's per episode price to $5 per episode and wanted tighter drm controls.

i think nbc will be seriously regreting this move come december when their downloads stop.  instead of selling a ton @ $2, they'll sell miniscule amounts for $5.

going to push and try to finish bioshock 360.  psychonauts pc is getting interesting, so if i take a break from bio, that will be why.

i need to decide whether i'll keep playing dead rising or just send it back and wait for a cheap copy to come my way.  it's fun, but there's some good looking games i'd like to rent instead.

Does anyone know if these upgrades are going to carry over from mission to mission, or will you have to do it again on each level?

my guess based on the demo is that you would have to carry over the upgrades in the sp mode to ever reach the top upgrade.  i'd venture that your upgrades only last in mp as long as you are on that server.  maybe the achievement list could shed some light on that.

looks like it does in some form.
Weapon Virtuoso    40Upgrade all weapons in ranked matches

i like this one:
Human Flak Gun    5Kill an enemy player with a grenade while he is parachuting

it's at the top of my gamefly queue.
9689  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360]medal of honor airborne demo up now on: August 30, 2007, 05:02:08 PM
not sure i agree with the bit about the upgrades not enhancing the game.  i went back and played the demo on hard last night using the mp40 and k98.  the upgrades for the mp40 were very helpful.  a faster reload really helps early on, but the second is kickass.  a double size clip.  64 rounds of damage with a quick reload = bullet rain.  i see that being a very popular reason to use it mp, and if you can't swap weapons in mp, or get easy access to the german guns, it makes it much more enticing to play as the bad guys in mp.

i was actually bummed when the demo ended.  that doesn't happen all that often.
9690  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3] All remaining 60GB models on store shelves! on: August 30, 2007, 04:54:11 PM
i found this out personally after signing up for the card to get the $150 off deal.  as soon as i got approved, they were out.  said they should be getting more in, but i didn't believe them and didn't want to spring for a slightly larger hard drive and a game i might not like.  luckily, there was a sony store (you still get the credit this way) 20 minutes from work with a 60gb in stock.

good thing i got that one when i did.  even if they drop the 80gb model, i'd rather have the full hardware compatibility instead.

F*#k the missing sisters.. How the hell you all killing these Big daddies? to be specific the ones that charge at you? I swear, I am down to a min of 3-4 deaths no before I can down one, but with the weapon upgrades I can get them down fast enough.

what's your tactic right now?

i find that loading up the tommy gun with AP rounds is a godsend against the rosies.  they like to keep their distance and pelt you with their rivet guns.  if you get in their face, they'll smack you though.  electro shock, swap to the mg and unload on them.  hide and reload, then right back in.  hit any water they walk through.  i also load the shotty with the electric rounds as a standby.

against the bouncers, it's a different story though.  they run fast and hit hard.  the above tactic will only work out if you have a s-ton of med kits as you will take damage.  i think there's a tonic which will help though.  the one which procs on melee damage.  i want to try the melee route and hide with the invisibility tonic.  could be a fun cat and mouse fight.

generally, there's two things i recommend you do for each bd once you get the option to do so:

if you have the plasmid to brainwash them, use it.  they'll soak up damage from splicers and with two bd's, you are almost guaranteed to get an easy kill on them both.  just make sure you grab one of the girls after the first bd hits the dirt otherwise she'll run and hide.  happened to me and i had to wait a pretty good time until the pair respawned.
take as many pics as you can before you attack.  there's some good bonuses to be had.

9693  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360]medal of honor airborne demo up now on: August 29, 2007, 06:31:35 PM
tried the 360 demo last night out of curiosity and it really feels like a fun game.  i love the respawn mechanic as it gives you a real choice on how to tackle the objectives.  do i land near the allies and move up as a team, land just behind enemy lines and flank the front line or do i go for a roof top and use height to my advantage?  it's not much on paper, but it really improves the game over a linear progression of  checkpoints.

having the weapon upgrades feels wierd in a single player game, but i like it.  it gives me a reason to stick with the stock weapon instead of grabbing the first german weapon i see.  the differences are subtly helpful, which means you won't become godlike from just using a level 8. (i think.  i got my loadout up two levels, but later ones could be unbalancing.)

the only problem i have is speed with swapping the grenade for a gun.  too often i'd end up crouching or something instead of raising the smg. end up dying for this reason.

this went from next year maybe purchase to a solid rental.  i'll wait to see how the mp works out and the length of the sp game.
9694  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Halo 3 has Gone Gold! on: August 29, 2007, 06:16:15 PM
the mp coop interests me although the game in general didn't make it into the top 10 fps of all time list.  that last sequence in h1 burned me out on the game.  i never touched h2 and i seriously doubt i'll ever end up with the pc version as the vista premium still sits unopened on my shelf.

i regret not going with liongames for the ce though.  a great price and i could've lived with the shipping delays.

it's really just another casualty of the fourth quarter game glut.

Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 are more complex than Persona 3, but familiarity with Persona 3 should help with that.

Yeah, Persona 3 is like the gateway drug into SMT.  It really helps to learn the basics like demon types and spell names (which confuse the crap outta me).  I think from an accessibility standpoint it's probably best to tackle the SMT games in reverse order from when they were released this gen:

1) Persona 3
2) Devil Summoner
3) Digital Devil Saga
4) Nocturne
Very well said and I totally agree.  Devil Summoner is a departure from the series... but it's definitely more accessible than DDS1 + 2 and Nocturne.

nocturne was so overwhelming at first, that i went and bought the strat guide.  seeing that and how much time the game would suck up pretty much killed any momentum going in.

dark cloud 2 also sits in a similar category.  when i hear someone say "i spent over 200 hours in dc2" i find it much harder to get going.

not sure what changed about me, but my devotion to long rpg's has been declining for a long time.  not since the 99 hours i put into ff7 an age ago have i played any one game for so long.

i might recommend dc1 over dc2 just because the world building aspect is toned down.

surprised noone has mentioned the xenosaga games.   icon_twisted

after what, 8-ish hours, i'm still enjoying it quite a lot.  i'm tooling around with the houdini splicers and the plant lady.  damn those things are annoying.  glad i picked up the upgraded shock plasmid.  it looks like one of them just keeled over in one hit after i hit the water pool he was standing in.

getting the bd's to fight each other is great fun and well worth going through with slightly hobbled adam levels.

i tried the resistance demo last night and found out the horrid truth about my hdtv.  it's not capable of 720p.    mad

it's not bad looking, but man was i not impressed.  the environment was great in size and detail, the number of enemies was much higher and the battle was hectic.  the whole thing just felt like m-o-t-s.  i think i need to give it more time and try out the second part of the level.

it didn't help that i had just stopped in bioshock after a 3 hour gaming binge and my mind kept wanting to play resistance the same way.  it took me a moment to stop changing weapons instead of firing them for instance.  the controls also feel floaty in comparison.  is there a way to crouch?  i kept wanting to duck under cover.

i'll add it to my gamefly queue instead of one of the older 360 games i have there.

thanks for the suggestions so far.  what about the downloadable games?  i have d/l'ed the blast factor demo but haven't tried it out yet.  what about calling all cars?

well, thanks to the sony deal, the price drop, the 5 free blu ray movies and my resolution to hold back from spending 200 on games this fall i'll never get time to play, i am the proud owner of a new system.  oddly enough this marks the first time i've ever had every console in the current generation.

so now i'm left wondering what will be a good game to start off with.  i am leaning towards r&c:f, but that won't hit for a while.

the system just begs for something other than protein folding to do with it's processing power.  btw, is there a gt f@h group to join my work to?

so far, i'm impressed by the package.  very sturdy and a beautiful looking console.  the interface is slick, but i much prefer the live experience to psn.

i do have a large library of ps2 games to revisit in the meantime and i'll get a few ps3 games via gamefly as soon as i decide which ones to get.

Well, with you having such an old PSP, it's somewhat easy (especially if you choose to go the Lumines route). Then you just have to patch it with a homebrew version of 3.52, and you'll be all set with the best of both worlds (all the official features and the joy of homebrew).

9718  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Why Do We(I) Care About Achievements? (Bioshock inspired) on: August 23, 2007, 06:49:13 PM
i must admit to a little score whoring.  some of the ones i have, i have set out to get outside of the normal playthrough.  a handful in saints row were like this.  i also felt a little remorse at sending crackdown back without getting some of the random feats.  if i hadn't gotten so addicted and played to the point of burnout, i would probably still have it.  i'm annoyed that i missed one thing in overlord which will prevent me from getting the 100% evil.  i'll be annoyed if i miss an early recording in bioshock which keeps me from getting that one.

i'm most annoyed when an achievement point isn't tied to anything tangible in game, and is boring to pull off too.  finding all of the cd's in saints row is like this.  i have no interest in the song unlocks, so the only reason is for the points.

i love getting points when i least expect it.  the crackdown ac. for keeping a car in the air for x seconds was cool as i got that after a cluster grenade attack from a skyscraper.

i hate it when large amounts are tied to small milestones.  oblivion's could have been so much more than just the quest line advancement.  edf2017 is horrid for this reason as it takes the points at completion to the extreme.

i also hate the insane requirements for some mp achievements.  gears and the 10k kills.  hosting x number of matches or playing for 8 hours straight in graw.  those i see as the most harmful types.  you have to play long after you would have probably moved on just to get those ones.
9719  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Console game trade ins on: August 23, 2007, 06:14:02 PM
for reference, the "keep it" price from gamefly dropped to $40+tax.  still a bit high imo, but comparable.

to answer your q, it depends on what you want vs your time investment to sell or trade here.  if they have a game you're interested in, i'd go for it, assuming the used is in good shape and you are ok with a used copy.

if you have a hollywood video, check out their game store side.  they can occasionally have good deals on trade ins.
9720  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Bioshock = System Shock 2 2007 Edition (NO SPOILERS) on: August 23, 2007, 06:08:28 PM
if you are going to sell, do it now.  i doubt the buzz will be as strong once the big game hits the scene.

that said, if you do keep it, the figure is pretty cool and will be a permanent fixture on my game shelf.  i'm a little disappointed in the other extra, the music cd, but i really bought it for the figure anyways.
