damn kevin, that is a haul.  the only game i got was the joint ops expansion.  i did get a george forman grill/rotisserie and that looks cool though.

my wife got me the chronicles of riddick dvd (directors cut too) after seeing the icon for the game on the desktop.

sorry to hear that about your wife ron.  i hope she has good luck and gets a better job than the one she had.  any manager who fires someone just before christmas deserves a kick in the ass, preferably by someone with cleats on.

i should clarify.  the information that vagabond quoted regarding static/dynamic ip addressing was targeted to the router's LAN addressing.  of course, the external ip you get from the ISP could be of either type.  the company knows that a static is more useful to a person as it allows you to host a web page or game server, so they charge you for that option.

basically, if you assigned a static ip to the router's external, or WAN address, you would lose your connection to the net.  especially if you used an ip in the most common internal ranges for home routers, in the 192.168.x.x or 10.0.x.x ranges.  those ranges are specifically for internal use.

i realize this is probably much more information than you need, but it's in my nature to teach people about this stuff.  disregard if uninterested.  biggrin

In New Zealand I'd say about 40% of our games come in DVD cases (double-thickness, they're the same size as the "new" small game boxes, which they still come in for retail display purposes). It's great. The manuals need not suffer either.

exactly.  i can think of a few games that did this over here

thief 3
commandos 3
legacy of kain: defiance
PoP: warrior within

the manuals haven't been huge with these games, but they didn't need huge ones to begin with.  there was certainly more room than they used though.
9685  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Almost Genius... The Autobiography of Drazzil on: December 23, 2004, 06:41:36 PM
o....k.  how bout we get back on topic now eh?  whether or not someone served in actual combat or whether someone was a troll or not, was not the purpose of draz' post.   let's just move on.  life is too damn short as it is

as for draz, i know exactly how you feel regarding luck in life and difficulty with math.  i've always felt i had bad luck in small matters and good luck in critical ones.   despite my best efforts, i've never broken a bone or been in a major accident.  i've survived death once, when i got so sick my blood pressure dropped to 70 over 40, so weak i couldn't walk straight.  what makes this event lucky is my dad was staying with his girlfriend at the time and i had the house to myself.  a friend of mine came over to hang out and when he saw me, he got a neighbor to help.  i was in the hospital for a while as they pushed fluids into me via IV.  quite an odd experience if you've never had one.  at another time, i knocked myself unconscious after i hit my head on a 3/4 in dia bolt.  tore a strip of flesh out of my scalp and needed stitches.  i still don't know how long i was out and it's a good thing i woke up on my own.  it would have been a few hours before anybody found me.

i haven't had good luck regarding lost relatives.  my grandfather died right after i was born, hit on the sidewalk by a drunk driver.  my uncle was hit as he tended to his car-struck dog and dragged for several hundred yards.  they never caught the driver, and it's assumed he was drunk too.   one of my grandmothers died the morning after i went to visit her.  she called to me as i slept in the next room, and i was the one who called for help.  my great-grandmother died when i was living with her, after a long illness.  i was one of the first people to see her gone.  my second grandmother had a stroke, but she fought through the rehab and made a fairly full recovery.   life has made an episode of ER out of me.

my overall childhood was one of moving around and different "new moms", as my dad was and is not very good with women.  parents split when i was 5.  he's good enough to get their attention and date for a while, but neurotic enough to make anyone go crazy.  he's also prone to both anger and depression.  unfortunately, i learned the behavior long ago, and i still work at it today.  when i think of how happy i am with my wife, it actually bums me out.  i could see something like what happened to him happen to us.  i see that if i follow his footsteps, i would lose her, and rightfully so.  i love my parents and have been given a chance to know a great stepdad, who taught me more than he knows.  in that, i see my parents' divorce as something positive.

i don't want to leave this on such a bad note, so i'll say this.  in everything we do in our lives and everything that happens, some good can come of it.

got this from the register today...

the footage of the plaintiff was taken when she was 17 years old, she claims. That not only renders the content illegal, but her status as a minor negates any consent she may have given to the game's developers to take and/or use the material.

here's a question for everyone.  if you bought a game with a minor baring her breasts, could you be punished for child pornography?

i guess this means no guy game 2:  girls gone wild edtion.

unfortunately, it looks like the file is ntldr.exe, which is the nt boot loader for the os.  i had this happen in class last year, and it required a reinstall to get it working again.  even though the file was present and i could copy a new one over from a working install, the os wouldn't start.  best case would be to boot up with the drive as a slave and copy files off it to another partition or a seperate drive.  if you had a windows ERD you could attempt a fix, but unless you made one beforehand, you can't get one now.

last shot would be to reinstall windows over the top, although that might not fix it either.
9689  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / With the next generation of consoles, will our PC VC's be... on: December 22, 2004, 10:02:32 PM
same thing was predicted with the last generation, specifically the xbox.  it didn't happen then and it won't happen now.  here's why:  the consoles will use either nvidia or ati video cards in them, and through the consolidation that a console has over a pc, games will look and play better than what's currently out for pc.  all that stuff about not having to code to the lowest common denominator.  but, as the years go by, the console slowly becomes outdated compared to current pc tech.

look at the xbox now.  games that were considered beautiful at the systems launch are no longer seen as having the greatest graphics.  even when developers learn all the tricks and we get better looking games as a result, eventually they get to the end of what is possible for a system.  meanwhile, the pc has slowly been making its way up the upgrade ladder and games end up looking better for it than a console.

it's pretty much inevitable with the current system we have.

oh, and you should have gotten a dell instead.  i can upgrade the video card.  when they bring out the mobile x800, i'll get me one.

don't worry about it warning, i feel the same way when it comes to coding smile

a bit of network information for you.

DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol) is a method by which your pc can recieve an ip address from a router automatically.  in its default mode, the router will hand out IP addresses to any pc or device that asks it for one.  this process is contrary to a different form called:

Static IP addressing.  here, you define the ip address that the machine uses and the other settings a pc requires to be able to access other machines on the network and the net.  if you run
ipconfig /all

on your machine, you will see information such as default gateway, wins, dhcp and dns servers.  you will also see what is referred to as a physical address, aka MAC address.  this is a unique id specific to your network interface card (nic).  i saw that the AP you are looking at has the ability to filter connections based on mac address, so it is a good choice.

WAN/LAN means wide-area network and local-area network.  simply put, the outside network and the internal network.  based on the settings you specified, you have dhcp enabled for the internal network.  you will need this enabled to allow the dell to recieve an IP address.  the AP will need to be set so that only the dell gets connected via wireless, or you could end up sharing your connection with the neighbors (and war drivers).

you are correct in your understanding of how the pieces fit.  the dsl modem feeds the router, which connects via cables to your home pc and the AP.  you will need to hook up the AP to the router via an ethernet cable, which means you have to set it up close by.  the AP will broadcast the signal to any devices within range (this can vary depending on where in your home you place the AP and what type of wireless you have). you don't need a seperate wireless card unless you plan on moving the pc away from the router.

re: the linksys wap11.  while the mac address filtering is good, the lack of wpa support is not.  wep can be broken easily, and if you are moving sensitive information between devices, this could put you at risk.  also, if you find a good 802.11g AP with mac filtering and wpa, you could use that instead.  802.11g supports a higher transfer rate (54mps vs 11mps) and is compatible with "b" devices.  you will end up spending a little more however.

other than all that, if you have your ssid set with a non-standard name and not broadcast, you will fall off the radar of most entry level hackers, as the cost to set up a real war-driver is higher than most people would consider.

hope that helps, and if you need more information, don't hesitate to ask smile

9697  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Anyone have experience setting up WiFi? on: December 21, 2004, 10:59:21 PM
the post that hepcat listed has a lot of good info on it, so i'll add to it.

you didn't say what type of router you have, so i don't know how capable it is of securing IP addresses.  the dlink router i have allows me to hand out specific ip's based on mac address.  using this route, you would hook up an access point and set the router to give one ip to the axim and the home pc's and to nothing else.  if the router doesn't have this capability, then give the dell a static ip and disable dhcp on the router.

the AP should have its default network name and administrator account changed.  disable upnp, as it can be used against you.  also disable remote web access for both router and AP:  it just gives hackers a front door to pound on.  don't broadcast your ssid and set up the highest level of encryption possible that both devices support (802.1x>WPA-PSK>WPA>WEP).  use a strong password and passphrase.

make sure you secure the AP down as much as possible.   you can be very easily taken advantage of if you don't tighten down your wireless.

small example;    i took my laptop to my dad's house to show it to him  and it has 802.11 built in.  without doing anything shady, i pulled up the wireless utility and saw that there were 4 networks in my area.  only one had any sort of protection and i could connect to the other 3 just fine.  speed was slow, but i could surf the net and do whatever i want.  knowing what i do about networks, i could have easily attempted to attack these people's machines or take control of the router.

or, i could have used that person's connection to run a mass mailer and get them in trouble.  by the time they knew something was wrong, the damage would've been done.  their isp would disable the account and it could take weeks to prove they had nothing to do with it.  by then, any chance of catching a spammer would be gone.

one last thing to add.  once someone is inside your router, it becomes much easier to set your machine up with all sorts of nasty things.

i have to admit though, the game was not all that hot looking, but of course this was ~3 years ago.  i never saw pics, just read about it.  the premise made the game seem pretty cool.  if it was more along the lines of space hulk or aliens, it would have rocked.  hell, if they modded alien swarm for a fps instead of the top down, it would be perfect.  a lot of the tension is lot with the top down view, imho.  still great though.

there was an older game i recall with coop through missions.  semi-futuristic.  codename outbreak.  it's actually the virtual precursor to stalker, although the coop has been gone from that game for quite some time.

if your'e looking for a more conventional fps with squad mates, try vietcong.  there are some great moments in that game and it's got coop against the ai too.  we have played that exclusively at our last few lan parties.  good chance that we'll end up playing that at the next one too.

there are not many games like this these days.  it's really too bad too.  remember a game called zero g troopers.  full range of motion and ship combat with friends.  it quietly fell off the radar a few years ago, although i have seen something like it in a 3d demo.

you could try the alien swarm mod for ut2k4. it's more aliens than starship troopers, but it's got coop.

katamari damacy
mr mosquito
maestro (or whatever that conductor game was called)
all the ddr and karoake games

i though that the gc had a good share of this market, but it seems they have let the market fade a bit.  i also think that tebunker nailed the issue on the head.  nintendo has to put its head into making new 1st party games, not reusing a lot of the old stuff.  they risk being seen as stagnant, as selling the same games they did 15 and 20 years ago, only with prettier graphics.  and while everyone loves a good sequel, we also love to play with new ideas.

well, thanks guys.  because of this post, i went out and grabbed yet another game.  my wife would be frowning right now.

anyways, it is a great looking game, although i seem to have a lot of lags/hanging operation moments.  if i toggle "night vision" on and off really quick, it causes the game to stop for a few seconds.  i usually alt-tab out and back and it works fine, but it is annoying.  had 1 ctd and one major graphical glitch requiring a restart.  the game could have used a little more time in QA, but all this aside, it's quite fun and looks great.

i like the bruises people get in a hand-to-hand fight and using a person's weapons against them.  it's also cool when you time your hit just right and stab someone in the side with the shiv, ending the fight in a single hit instead of wailing away on them.

if there was one thing i really don't care for, it would be the save system.  sure, it saves at the beginning of a "chapter" and checkpoints along the way, but towards the end of a chapter, if you need to revert back, you're left with restarting the whole sequence over again.
