this could be awesome and one more reason for me to finally upgrade the old wingman 3d joystick i have laying around to something more recent.  that and arma 2 (and maybe that WW I flight game) are luring me away from the console.

god damn that's a weird promo.  now, with your nvg's and gow 2 lancer, you will be a fine target for the local PD to take down when they get the call you are prowling around in your black sweat pants at night.

i'd have to say though, as one whom firmly believes that a zombie apocalypse is rising, NVG's would be downright vital  thumbsup

the funny thing about chrome 2 is that it was first hinted at over three years ago and not a peep out of them about it for a long time since.  i figured it was dead or rolled into something else.  it was on my radar due to the potential for infantry vs mech combat.

knowing that coj 2 was made with it makes me somewhat interested in it now.

these.  definitely.  sadly, i think that jj is not keen to doing a sequel now that he's all big mr star trek.  he'll probably stick to doing those now until the new cast gets as old as the first.  not that there's anything wrong with it, but cloverfield could make a killer sequel, something like a 28 weeks later (where is 28 months btw?)

i wish you the best of luck on that interview.  may it land you a permanent gig.  too many i know haven't been able to get stable jobs post layoff, myself included, but contract work is still work.

8414  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: New Mechwarrior coming on: July 09, 2009, 04:10:45 PM
they want to make the mech's more viable so you don't just move on as soon as the next big thing comes available.  i love that as i was very fond of using lights to take down heavies by surgically removing their weapons and hobbling them.

now, all we need is the marauder II and i'll be happy.

as usual with these gamestop sales, if you want something on the list, better go soon.  i grabbed the last copy of hawx for the 360 yesterday and it was only the first day of the sale.

and yes, they don't update the used prices on these things, ever.  which is really stupid if they want to clear out stock.

too bad it's so short a visit though, as we could all meet up for a beer or something.

If you ever plan on having kids, it's going to get worse...because trust me, kids are great, but they're also the ultimate stress you'll have in life.

+ two headaches, aged 1 and 3.  they also cause a lot more stress in a marriage than you would expect, and it has to do with parenting workload.  when the parents work different shifts, as with my wife and I, you end up with one parent taking over more of the job of raising them and that can cause resentment. i get this all the time, and it's currently the cause of our own spat.  she resents that i get home in the evening and only have to 'put in' a few hours before taking them to bed and that i get free time afterwards.  i've learned that if i don't want her mad at me as soon as she walks in the door, i have to be off the pc or xbox, even if i've already done the usual housework.

in any case, if you are always the rock in the storm, stay strong and show her that even though you have your spats, you still love her and the little things cannot break that bond.  it's a hard trick to learn, and not one i've perfected tbh.  the ones who love you most know just what to say to hurt you.

good luck man.  good luck to us all.
8421  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: ArmA II - demo, videos, reviews and other stuff on: July 08, 2009, 04:47:36 AM
really impressed by how well it looked and ran on my system.  i was expecting a hit due to the 4400 processor and it ran very nicely at mostly high settings.  i managed to get through the first demo mission from the chopper and thought the ending was a bit abrupt.  basically, we had lost a few men on the path in and i was dragging a man to safety to patch him up when the bmp drove up.  i thought i was a dead man, but i guess he was the cavalry as none of the squad attacked or hid.  i was so invested in getting my guy out of the firefight that i didn't notice the friendly running up to my position.  had the mission not ended there, i likely would have put two into him.

i skipped arma1 after having a wretched time with the demo and played ofp up to where they start sticking you with a squad to manage, but i had a hell of a lot of fun with it and even grabbed the expansions.  arma2 does gives me the same reactions ofp does, plus the enhancements and graphics are much improved.  i do hate hearing about the stealth bug though.  that's incredibly asinine that it wasn't caught as stealth was a major part of survival in the first one.  not an easy part due to the ai's eagle enhanced eyesight, but doable.

has this hit the shelf yet?  i have been having problems with steam not finishing up the download properly and had to get both the arma2 demo and eve online from another site as steam always showed 'downloading' despite showing no progress.

Sacred 2 is getting an expansion pack, Ice & Blood.  the new Dragonmage sounds mysteriously appealing.  I was holding off on Sacred 2 for a summer buy to have something to play during the summer gaming drought, but now I may hold off to see if they release a Gold edition like they did when the first game's expansion came out.

i wouldn't worry about waiting for the expansion ceekay.  there's more than enough gaming to be had just with the 6 characters they have now.

and look on the bright side, you can dress up the female characters in skimpy clothing, or power armor, in the case of the seraphim

a dragonmage could be a fun character to play through as well.
8423  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PSP2 in development,as powerful as XBOX1 on: July 07, 2009, 04:24:46 PM
of course this is true.  you think any of the big 3 are not developing some kind of next gen system to eventually replace the current one?  they just don't want anybody to know about it.  now the specs are of course hugely speculative, but when have they not been?  hell, the Wii ii will most likely have a full body motion suit that allows you to sit on your couch and twitch to make mario jump on the mushroom.  it will be awesome (in 720p!)

But, like I said, with the rapid improvement of streaming movies in regular and hi-def, Sony may have already missed the boat.

I don't think downloads really appeal to collectors. I can see it killing off the rental industry, but not appealing to the collector. I collect movies so I can watch them over a period of many years and loan them to friends. locking it to one device doesn't appeal to me at all, not only because I can't loan them, but because I know it has built in obsolescence.

I don't KNOW I will still have an xbox 360 or PS3 in 5 years, but I'm pretty sure I will have a Bluray/DVD player so my investment is safe.

this is also why i won't buy full games on the eventual 360 DL service.  same price as the disc and no way to recoup anything should i decide to sell it.  i would rent them ala gamefly, but for me, buying a DL is strictly on a sale or a hard to find game, like you see constantly on the PC side.  xbla games are pretty much in the bargain bin status for me, so i don't feel that they are a bad purchase.

i have played less than one fifth of this gen's games on either the ps3 or the wii.  at least i have a decent internet surfing, blu-ray playing, media computer (that also plays the occasional ps2/3 game) by the tv though.

8427  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Stuntmag Ignition 360 - 4 bucks at Fred Meyer on: July 03, 2009, 06:12:19 PM
ymmv as i don't know how many copies could still be out there, but i found it yesterday for 5 bucks with the usual 20% off, which is a great deal on an older game and definitely lower than the used price you will find in a gamestop.

i grabbed two (of four) as i think a buddy will be interested in it, but if anyone wants one, i'll get one for you at cost.  (shipping, tax)

they also had the regular assortment of games, but it looks like they intend to keep them as they still want too much.  only other notable mention is AC 4 for the 360, marked down to 25.

almost afraid to as if it runs, i'll be clicking buy as soon as i'm done.  i have many fond memories of ofp and not all of them from playing the game.  we had great fun setting up races and the like in the editor, not to mention some of the scenarios we cooked up.

the clip posted earlier with 1500 ai's in a single battle makes me very excited.  that's a war going on, not just scripted bits like in most war games.

logmein has a free version with limited features like no data transfer to the client, but Basic works very well for most users and you can have more than one client (5 iirc) and multiple users with different access levels.  we used it at work for a limited test case and it always did very nicely.  plus there's an iphone app. (not free, unfortunately)  but it also works via safari, or so i've heard
8431  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Awesome App Megathread on: July 02, 2009, 09:18:50 PM
i'm using  it works pretty well, but i might try that one if i keep running into problems.

and i would group sys admin stuff into it's category as it isn't just os related. apps like defraggers, search engines like Everything and reg or driver cleaners.

then you have os prep tools, like nlite or vlite, driver compilations, driver backup software.  update systems like autopatcher, and filehippo.

that liberkey site and have a good categorization convention, so i'd recommend something similar.

launchy is great and i wouldn't set up a system any other way now

Virtual Desktop - 4 desktops you can switch between and group your open programs by task.  can be buggy, but it works very well most of the time.

notepad++ - the best notepad replacement i have ever used.  plugins for multiple uses, programming language coding, file tabs and sessions, and it works portable.

Console.  command prompt replacement and it looks pretty slick with a transparent interface.  command prompt portable is pretty slick too.

System administration
all of the pstools apps are great, and fepstools is a slick gui interface for all of them.
powergui - powershell interface, helps ID and script creation
wmic - windows management interface command line.  super fast method to pull data and perform common maintenance tasks on groups of servers.
vnc.  many flavors and some great choices for small administration tasks and help desk stuff - need to help someone far from home who can't figure out basic stuff?  get them hooked up with this and you can remote manage their system without overwhelming them with tech speak.

as for my major interest, portable applications, there are a number of them.  mostly, i go by what's listed on, both main page and forum, and

liberkey is a great super suite of portable applications too and make a good site to start.

these are just what i know off the top of my head.  there's a lot more.

top honors so far:

RFG, for all the reasons that have been mentioned.  just a damn fun game with a destruction engine that sets the standard. if they made an arcade game using it ala boom blox, i would buy it in a heartbeat.

infamous, while taking a back seat to prototype (which i haven't yet played) does a lot right despite some issues.  i for one had a blast in it and even though i don't feel the need to go through again for the good side, i had a lot of fun, throughout the game.

ghostbusters, for making the dream of millions of fans come true.  great effects, story, humor, cast support, and solid gameplay, with mp to boot.  this is how you make a game out of a movie.  if other movie games were this good, we would not view them with disdain.  we would love them.

Mays suffered from hypertensive heart disease... No evidence of exterior or interior head trauma was found during Mays' autopsy, Adams said

well, if that's the cause, then that clears the airline of any negligent wrongdoing.  of course, i'm not entirely sure yet.  hypertension + an unseen trauma could very well add up to a sudden death where it would have just left a healthier person with a headache.

+1 to WBS and Grue about the difficulty, particularly the part about playing on experienced.  up until then, i was having a great time and hadn't had any major problems, even when you aren't with the whole group.  (i think the first section with ecto-1 was troublesome, but that was before i used it to capture).  the damn cherubs in the first section are just huge pita's and ray was no help at all. most of the time, i had to revive him 3, 4 times, and worst of all, he's too brain dead on when to revive you.  he ran into to save me several times as they were pelting me with the fireballs, knocking us both out.  nice save man.

the only trick i had was using webbing the gate first and then dodging everything (but not with B, as that breaks the web) and hoping to get a good shot at the little bastards.  i think i tried it about 10 times before quitting and then aced it when i went back last night.  the section later on was also a pita even with all 5 of us as it just took to long to get any of the floaters captured, and you then had those ghosts plus the undead slashers, the tombstone creepers, and the damn cherubs flying around.  really damn aggravating as i was constantly running around playing medic.

then the last boss?  first try, no problems getting the trick or staying alive.

i do like the ending and that they tell you how many ghosts/artifacts you found in each level.
