also watched it last night, and i liked it.  wife hated it for the shaky cam.  i really wish this had been the cthulhu story hinted at last year, but whatever.  i thought the idea was brilliant, and the execution was pretty good.  the opening bit until the S hits the fan lasted too long, but at least it builds the characters up from what would have been a pretty shallow set of people.  not personally, of course, but from an emotional investment POV.  that everyone pretty much died gave it a very somber ending, which i appreciate.  far too often, we get this impossible situation which manages to kill almost everybody, except the one couple who miraculously survives.  (war of the worlds, day after tomorrow, etc.)

i totally missed out on the origin segment, and the reveal that it's a baby (which is in itself, awesome news for a proper sequel).

it's one of those movies where i look forward to a continuation of the storyline.

i wonder if calling makes any difference.  i used the web site because it was easier.

entered the ticket, got the box a few days later,  shipped next day, took 9 days to make it to tx, ~ a week to 'fix' it and then 9 days to send it back.  for that, i get a month of live.  woohoo.   icon_confused

yesterday, i saw they finally marked nwn2 mob down to 9.98.  pirates remained at 24.98, and rise of legends at 14.98.  no 360 games at all, and only a few ps3 sports titles and the same two copies of the orange box @ 29.98.

i still have an unopened copy of pgr4 that i grabbed at 15 if anyone wants it.  otherwise, it will go back in a few days.

Am I the only person doing this?  Where's dep?  Anyway, I am really digging MGS2.  I just met up with Pliskin, which means I have made it past the part that pissed everyone off.  It doesn't really bother me at all.  I like having to go to the data nodes to get your radar going.  Makes it a little more interesting.  Also nice to be able to shoot things in first person mode.  The story is pretty interesting so far as well.

The part that pissed me off the most and pushed me over the edge was where I was running around as Raiden.....naked.....holding a hand over my privates.......with no weapons.

I threw the disk accross the room and gave up at that point.  How close was I to the end?

About an hour.

Damn.  If I'd known that I would have pushed through to the end.

There's a part after that pissed me off more than any other part of the game, so you may have chosen wisely.
was it the
Spoiler for Hiden:
boss fight ala samurai warriors?

that pissed me off more because it had the potential to be awesome and was just more a giant pain in the ass.

I just finished watching that. There are no storyline spoilers at all, but it does give you a good idea of how it looks in motion, and shows off a few of the little touches that seem to be improvments over the prior versions.

The youtube video was higher quality but showed less variety. Definitely liking what I am seeing. How can I wait 6 more days? It's simply not possible!

do not unspoiler if you want to resist knowing how it all starts.  you have been warned.
Spoiler for Hiden:
intro has been posted.  it's pretty cool, and you can see the 'no loads' in action at the end, as it goes to gameplay right after a scene.  the initial load is about a minute though, and this on a ps3.  of course, the graphics are hard to judge from an off center blurry cam shot at low res, but it gives you a good feel for the first few minutes.  i like it, and i actually got a giddy moment there.  i will be 'sick' that day and will get a few hours of uninterrupted gaming.

link for the interested.

on a bad (and unexpected) note, it looks like the hackers have this one already, as indeed, they were the ones who posted the video.  i didn't realize that until the end of the video when the release group's name was shown.

a non spoiler-y comment.  i really like the music and the way they fold the credits into the scene.

Friend brought up a good point...

If the final 4 were Cylons all along, how is it that he fought in the original war against the 'old' model toasters. That means there were skinjobs all along?

i was thinking the same thing myself.  he and adama have known each other for a long time as well.

tbh, i haven't liked the premise since it was revealed, and i hope they have been F-ing with us the whole time about their being the final 4 of 5.  other than the internal torment, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
8421  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer is coming to a DS near you! on: April 23, 2008, 03:01:37 PM
i should not have attempted what i did last night, especially in my current state of mind.

this run went pretty well and i had been able to upgrade my main set a few times before setting off with a +3 polearm/iron shield set and a happy armband from mountain top.  i think i leveled up 3 times in the next level and i had not faced anything threatening yet, so i had a full head of confidence.  at one point in the mines, i saw what appeared to be a room beyond my reach and bordering an underground lake, so i dug out the wall with a pickaxe and found myself in one of those underground stores.

he had the usual assortment of herbs and pots and such, but only one weapon.  i check it out and it's 9 freaking thousand dollars?!  unidentified of course and a measly base 2 damage.  however, this one somehow hits 3 squares instead of 1 or something.  damn, i thought, that could be helpful later on (remember, my last death was at the hands of two mobs who repeatedly confused me).  of course, there's no way i can afford that amount as i had never even had that much in a single run.

but i did make a second 'door' into his store though....

you can see where this is going.

aside from my other equipment, i had a scroll of confusion, a couple of healing herbs, a dragon herb, and a knockback staff.  i forget what a lot of my other stuff was now, but as you'll see, i could have attempted this theft naked and got the same results.

now, enter in RL an eye problem, specifically conjunctivitis.  basically, one of my tear ducts is infected and swollen, making it painful to blink and really do much more than lie down and rest.  it's not a state conducive to playing games other than say, solitaire.

i crack open the ds and remember my great heist plan, so i review my equipment and the distance to the stairs.  (it was at the '1' position of a numeric keyboard to the store's '9').  i get the brilliant idea to pick up the sword and throw it across the lake, making it easier to fool the owner into thinking i was still going to pay him.  or something.  anyways, that part goes perfectly.  the sword flies out and lands along my escape route, just inside the room where i dug through the wall.  i leave the store and run down and grab it.  no sign of the owner, so i assume i have a decent head start and keep walking .  before i had gone halfway through this room, the owner steps in.  damn, they are fast.  fight or flee instinct kicks in, and in my state of mind, i chose poorly.  in one move, he then closed the distance to me and hit me with 97 damage.  my little 70hp would-be thief dropped in one hit, without so much as a fight.  i take some solace knowing that even with my equipment, i would have only made it one room over.

had i thought it all through and then executed it according to plan, i may have made off with a rare and unique weapon.  instead, i got sent back to the title screen, without so much as a rescue offer.  the game takes a hard line approach to crime.

8423  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Playing Metal Gear Solid 1 - 3 before MGS 4 - who is with me?! on: April 23, 2008, 02:25:53 PM
about 2 hours or so into mgs3 and it's such a different beast than 1 and 2 that it seems like a whole other type of game.  i'm liking it quite a bit actually, and i wonder why i never got that far into it before.  it probably helps that i grabbed the box set and have used the new camera angle the whole time.  i also grabbed a ds3 to go with it, so i wouldn't miss out on the experience.

re: mgs1 on ps3.  how do you do the trick in the psycho mantis fight?  i figure i'll play it on the psp after mgs3 and just fake it somehow.

8425  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer is coming to a DS near you! on: April 22, 2008, 10:54:50 PM
i had my first exposure to table mountain last night in a great run that ended much too quickly on 22?  it was two levels past the underground spring town.  i dropped in at the level and faced some bastard confuser who kept hitting me with confuse.  i used a restorative and hit him, then he confused me again.  unfortunately, one of those two-hits-per-turn walked up and started wailing on me too.  i never got another hit against them and used up all of my healing before they brought me down.  i had a pretty good chunk of equipment with me on that run, but all of my main stuff was back at the mountain top.

unfortunately, both the masseuse and oryu had long since been knocked out of the fight, or i may have been able to recover from it.

it's ok though, as i had been able to pay off the cook's fee, get the masseuse to join me, and upgraded a good chunk of my equipment on that run.   never so content with getting a cheap ass death before.

8429  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gaming backlog of ATB proportion. on: April 22, 2008, 08:32:34 PM
if my backlog was that small i would be a changed man.  i have a whole shelf of mostly ps2 games, only a small portion finished.  a growing list of 360 games too.  not many wii or gc games, but enough to be a backlog on their own.  it's too bad as i only seem to have them as a collection, not as a serious candidate for playing through.  a handful of xbox1 games too.

my portable collection is ds heavy right now, but at least those i can play anywhere.

The reasoning is, just like the PSP (at least in the beginning), you can now software hack your console to do things that the parent company wants you to buy (VC on the Wii, PS1 emulation on the PSP (among other things)).

So on the PC front, you'd say "In-store and online game purchases become completely useless thanks to bittorrent?"

I don't see this new emulator making more than the tiniest of blips on the VC sales.  I think the vast majority of regular VC purchasers will never even hear about this emulator, let alone install it.

but think of the poor souls at nintendo who will make less money because of this!
