8401  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Gone. on: October 06, 2008, 11:20:15 PM
as i surreptitiously posted in lidrgn's thread, my stepfather was in failing health the last few years and had recently degraded the last two months due to COPD.  partially from smoking, but primarily done in by an incident a few years ago which led to stomach acid being inhaled during his sleep.  that did more damage then the smoking and reduced his lung capacity to less than a third total.  well, he passed on about a week and a half ago, the same day as paul newman did, in fact.  he wanted to go home to die and be among his family before he did.  about 20 minutes after saying goodbye to his sister, he went to sleep and slipped away.

i haven't mentioned it as i really haven't stopped long enough to feel anything about it.  that's partly why i have posted in other places as it let my mind segment a little.  reading rickfc's post brought this to the surface, so here it is.

he was 59.  RIP Mr Magoo (his net name from ghost recon and every fps, racing, and every other online site he visited)

i am sorry for your loss rick.  i know that hanging around here and shooting the news with whatever random topic i chanced upon has helped me, so i know it will help you to be around people here, in as much as that applies to internet forum posters.  hell, i haven't even posted my own version of this topic as i really didn't know what to say.  it seems easier this way and i hope you don't mind the slight derail as i did earlier.

he had a long life and looked like a happy person to be around.  we can only hope for so much in life and he looks like he had a good one.

New Blu-Ray releases:

Sleeping Beauty: Platinum Edition (3-disc)
With how much new BR releases tend to be ($25 range give or take, for a single disc), that's gotta be one expensive release.
$24 on amazon, if I'm looking at the right thing. 2 disc blu-ray plus the DVD

Wow. I'm impressed. I just might have to grab it then at that price.

i would too, but i already have the dvd for the daughter (3 y/oas of wednesday?!)

8408  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: SPORE Impressions on: October 06, 2008, 06:16:46 PM
played in bits and made it to the space stage last week with a wholly belligerent race of dog-mouthed dragons who fly around in their viper VII trying to scrape together an existence next to a hippy race of bears and a grade A asshole race of something my dog pooped out.  why are they pissed at me?  i guess i ignored their requests for a handout one too many times and they really needed the money to fund a nigerian church or something.  both races seem to have a never ending supply of planetary semen as their colonies dot every system within three jumps reach from my home system.

i have a weed trade with the hippies as i thought it would bring in the dope money, but all it does is make it possible for me to get a "really good deal" to buy it from them for all of the money i have.  turns out, the hippies are really pyramid schemers with an amway franchise.  they make the 419'er race look like amateurs.  they don't pack much into their ships however.  the one ally ship i could take with me blows up as soon as the enemy radar tracks it.

i hadn't saved in a bit, and after an hour or so, the A-holes declared war on me and proceeded to take 2 of my 4 colonies as i hadn't been able to get from one colony to the next and kill 8 heavily armed and health regenerating enemies with my pee shooter and complimentary missile gift (next best weapon costs almost as much as the hippie's cheapest bid price)  while they swarmed my one city and gave it a heavy kick to the groin.  after i finally respawned after getting shivved myself, i found that they had set up shop in my old city and were using my people to fly the grapes into what passed for their mouth.  oh yeah, and my more established colony was also gone too.  hoo-freaking-ray for me.  i went back with a vengeance and kicked them off my planet and found i couldn't make the other city surrender, so i had to raze it.  i got 14k from that and needed to spend 97k to restart my own colony.  that 97k is from the hippy race, not my own, btw.  they can help me seed the universe cheaper than i can.  am i missing something, or is the game now favoring another race to win?

after losing half of my systems with no way to repopulate them and an enemy race who then attacked both my two colonies at the same time, i quit spore.

maybe this whole limited install deal aint so bad after all.

The 3 year old would think it was funny, and we can't have the tapee fully cognizant of the amusement factor. The 7-month old would definitely work though. A baby with something like a Fig Newton taped to its head could provide some entertainment.

it would work.  he always seems to have some item of food stuck in his hair.  he'd probably get a kick out of it.

recently, he's had a number of things on his head, many in fact placed by the 3 y/o:

his pants, sometimes with his head stuck in them
a metal mixing bowl
books
any concave shaped toys
backpacks, with or without books, crayons, stuffed animals, etc.
his food bowl
her food bowl
diapers (clean, thank god)

i held the order open for a couple of days thinking that amazon would change the price down to match the same deal they had before, but nothing has happened other than them adjusting the full price down.  sorry amazon, but 6 dollar shipping plus tax puts your 3 dollar "sale" into the red.

get it quick.  good for another 128hrs.  not sure how they figure the 48hr deal, but whatever.  they also have frontline for the 360 for 19.90.

if you want it, get it now as they often run out of the big deal games.

also this time are a bunch of gaming mice and some at real discounts.  one sandio retails for $80 is down to $10.  one review makes it sound pretty good, so i might grab this as a good backup to my wireless ms laser

is this the same as the pc game from years back?  i remember that kobra really bought into the whole thing and tried to get people to buy into it.  the demo for that one was almost as bad.  the biggest problem i had was it didn't seem like a real game, just one of those small time korean developed online games trying to capture any part of the starcraft market.  pretty unpolished and much too twitchy.  i don't think i played more than 2 rounds before i deleted that one.

well, the atmosphere in the warriors was pretty well done, imo.  very drab and depressing, and it really made the slums feel like the slums and not just a color scheme applied to a pretty place.  plus, it had some interesting mechanics to H2H fighting.  never really made it far enough to see if guns were involved, but i don't recall anything about them being in game, which makes a gun-centric max payne a bit of an odd choice for dev/game.

despite having a well established reputation for releasing less-than-stellar games, EA has canned the promising fps for quality issues.  nuts to us i guess.

linky for the adventurous

Code:
"The game was not on track to meet the high quality standards set by the team and by the EA Games Label. A lower-quality game is not in the best interest of the consumers and would not succeed in this market."

much of the team is gone as well.  too bad, it could have been good.

going back through the game the second time with all your powers, combos, and attributes is wicked fun.  just wish it was possible to go through that way on the harder difficulty and get the credit for it.

Um, wait...how do you start a new game with all of your existing powers?!?!  When I hit New it started me over with nothing to my name.  What the heck did I miss?  Oh, and let me throw in a pre-emptive  icon_redface

load the savegame of your last playthrough.  i was kind of annoyed too as it starts you out at the beginning and i got the impression that it had only saved my progress there.  turns out you can select any level once you load that save.  everything you have unlocked/found/upgraded will be there and you can keep upgrading everything by playing through again.  also, any found holocrons will not respawn, and are already  counted, so anything you find will be the leftovers.  it would be perfect if you could up the difficulty as i hoped, but it is massively enjoyable as it is.

My only WTF? about the article:

Quote
Save points can be found across the map, but they're thinly spread. Find yourself on the losing end of a gunfight and you could be pushed back to some thirty minutes beforehand. Without a checkpoint system to ease the passage between save points, the game can at times descend into a brutal slog. We've been assured that the final code will address these issues, and it's vital that it does as, in the code we were witness to, the fault was close to game-breaking.

they had damn well put Save Anywhere in the PC version!  I remember someone hacked the first one to put it in and eventually it was done via patch, but after the outcry from that they should have learned their lesson.

damn that's stupid.  having a hackneyed method of saving based on using a telephone/pc/unmovable journal is annoying, and more so in a game promising open ended freedom.  it was ok through most of far cry on normal because of the way the levels were designed.  plus, this isn't a horror game, so the whole threat of reloading is aggravating instead of enhancing the mood.

i've had decent luck with them, and on average, get the game i have on the top of the list half the time.  got SW:FU the week it released, as well as alone in the dark and bourne conspiracy.  of course, i have had yakuza on there for a while, and even showing high availability, not shipped in favor of a game ~5 off the top.

one thing that helps is to get the games you want before release on your list asap.  it seems they weight that fact against everybody else who wanted it later on.  each time i got the game on release week, i had sent back 1 on thursday/friday.  that's mainly because i don't seem to get the fast shipment thing any more.

i look at it this way, i have played a bunch of games i would probably not bought, a number of games i would have been regretted buying, and a few that i would have bought and actually been satisfied keeping.  overall, it has been a good experience, even though it has been pretty crappy in the past at times.
