8401  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: XBOX 360 controller redesign on: August 20, 2008, 08:52:44 PM
damn that design pic looks stupid.  not only can you not use the pad for analog games, but you can't use the buttons with the d pad.  nevermind the mindfrack of swapping left hand movement, right hand view/action.

oh well, i guess we'll just have to mod our own stuff if we want a decent d pad for anything other than slow games.
8402  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Firefly on Blu-Ray Official on: August 20, 2008, 04:53:23 PM
let's see if this gets past the logical purchase sensors.

dvd set, $25 when i got it on sale.  looks good enough upscaled on a 1080i hdtv.
bd set, $90 with no likely good sale price for some time.  will look better, but not leagues above what i have.  plus, like ceekay says, it hits dead center in the middle of a hugely expensive game season.

no deal.  not enough extras to warrant a purchase any time soon.

most of my first posts were about SA, halo 2 (??) and r&c: uya.

ah good times.

don't worry, we'll play it enough for you too.

oh good then, i can go back to sleep.
8405  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 5 months left! what are you buying? on: August 19, 2008, 05:35:09 PM
first day or close enough
Fallout 3 - my most anticipated game of '08 left
Fable 2 - moved up from the maybe list.  'nuff said
Mercenaries 2 - 1/3rd of the first big reason i bought a 360.  let's hope it earns the silver medal behind gta4
Far Cry 2 - wide open world in africa.  something unique and it looks great
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky - loved the first, this is a great way to revisit the game world
Aliens: Colonial Marines - this one came out of nowhere and granted a wish i have had since aliens online and only briefly glimpsed in the avp games.

interested in, but wait for reviews/sales
Ghostbusters - very likely to get bumped up.
Batman: Arkham Asylum - if it releases this year, that is.
Rock Band 2 - while i love rb, i am not that great at it.
Saints Row 2 - looks like a great take on the sandbox genre, but i think mercs 2 will be a better fit for now.
Force Unleashed - very much looking forward to the demo on this to make my final judgment.
Infinite Undiscovery - looks/sounds good, but i have vowed to finish lost odyssey before picking up another jrpg to sit on the shelf.
Resistance 2 - still have R1 to finish up.
Gears of War 2 - while i will miss the mp launch goodness, i never really dug the first one.
Dead Space - feels like bioshock in space, but i think i will end up waiting a bit on it.
Spore - beware of the hype.  i am holding my self back from this for a bit.
Shaun White Snowboarding - one of the few wii games i am actually looking forward to.
Tomb Raider: Underworld - loved TR legend, but this one gets bumped back to next year for me.
yakuza 2 - need to find/play yak 1, but this sounds pretty cool
persona 4 - it would be stupid to get this as i still haven't unwrapped p3:fes, but you never know.
Mirror's Edge - not sure how much fun this is just yet.
Colonization - another sid production, but i never seem to get enough playtime with the pc these days and have barely touched civ 4 bts
The Last Remnant - see note about jrpg and lost odyssey.
Sacred 2 - could be a great thing until d3 comes, but there's been very little news about it, so i am a little wary.

only ~350, so much less than last year around this time.  but there's a lot of maybe's to consider.
a tough year to be sure.
8406  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Preview] Hands-On with Fable II on: August 18, 2008, 09:48:14 PM
sweet.  nice write up again Ron.  i'll let it all sink in and then ask some questions later.

i wonder how much of the world will be altered by your actions, these so named "dynamic areas".  worth a second play through i would bet.  any word on how large the world is?  how open it was when you were running around?  any glitches in the graphics at this point?  were there dynamic environmental sounds?  background music?  how alive did the world feel; animals, realistic lighting and shadows, character animation?

it's going to be good.  another game to squeeze into the fall 08 madness with mercs and fallout.

8416  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Sword of the Stars: A Murder of Crows Expansion Announced! on: August 15, 2008, 06:44:08 PM
i can agree with the first half hour disappointment.  i had slowly expanded out from earth and had made some of the fleets pretty decent sized for that phase of the game but it was all very droll and boring.  build, assign, move, next turn, rinse repeat.  occasionally, a colony ship would land on a decent planet and i would name it.  unfortunately, my 2 year old hit the power button and killed my empire before i found any enemies to fight.

i really need to give this game a fair shake again.

good luck with this, but at this point, i think you are SOL on every seeing any of that money returned.

too bad he picked the items up.  with a delivery address, you might have had a shot of recovering the items and/or busting him on the spot.  by now, he knows the gig is up, so he would be stupid to call/visit.  if he is that dumb, play along and get the cops involved.
8419  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Bionic Commando Rearmed Impressions on: August 14, 2008, 06:55:48 AM
ok, the d-pad is really getting me annoyed.  both against a boss and again in 06 i was constantly getting screwed by hitting the wrong grapple at the wrong time.  it's just too damn unreliable.  if i'm trying to swing at an angle, it's a good chance that i'll grapple straight ahead instead.  getting the timing down for an angled swing followed by a vertical hang stopped me from getting past the boss in 02.  it's frustrating.

i am really hoping that i'll get adjusted to the 360 controls, or i will be pretty much done with this game.

I have absolutely zero desire to see this movie.  None.  Not even a little tiny bit.  The potential for cool was there (i.e. the Clone Wars cartoon series was awesome), but every single thing about this film just screams "epic fail".

a big +1 to everything you said.  if LF felt it necessary to add a baby jabba to add some kiddie appeal, then i really have no desire to see this.  the preview i saw last even had a clip of it and was the beginning of the end for me.  no way i'll even bother;  i have better movies to go see instead.  a gay jabba in the movie is probably the last thing anyone wanted to see and is not something i ever expected to write about for that matter.  they must be out of their FN minds.

shame really as i liked the original animated cartoon and have them on dvd.  i'll go watch that instead.

just a quick note for others looking at BC:R.  tearing issues apparently hamper the 360 version, and the well known limitations of the Dpad are noticeable.  the ps3 version also offers remote play.  no word on tearing there yet as the psn likes to make us wait an extra day.

core gameplay is good however, regardless of which version.

8430  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Bionic Commando Rearmed Impressions on: August 13, 2008, 07:11:23 PM
for the first time ever, i really regret getting this on xbla.  had i read about the psn version and remote play, i would have got that version instead.  plus, the damn d-pad is so wonky and the analog so loose that it makes some of the directional swinging a big pain in the ass.  the only + to getting the 360 version is the discount on points cards i got so it makes the game $7.50 instead of 10.

overall, no tearing that i could notice (1080i over component) and the graphics look nice.  has all the nuances of the original with a nice layer of polish.  plus, i like that it saves progress after every full stage.

i have a 120gb drive in mine, so it is definitely interesting to see what they can do with loading times.  i anticipate using this in fallout 3 for instance, and maybe other open world games.  i think we will see new games being able to take more advantage of this as an option.  it should be possible for devs to code something in to improve it if they know about it before hand.  there might not be as noticeable an effect for older games though.

and yes, it does seem odd that the more powerful our consoles have become, the more like a pc they get.  downloadable content, patches, now installs, oh and bsod's of course.

Yeah I don't know why they felt the need to include that tidbit.  Newsflash: Unfinished game is unfinished.  Kotaku is there!

no S, man.  the game doesn't even have an official status yet.

combat being boring is kind of odd though.  yeah, so batman is mostly punching and kicking.  he isn't freaking spiderman on the ground and can leap 25 feet in the air and grapple bad guys or anything.  just make sure that he can use whatever weapons and environmental objects are around.  hell, give us a modified version of AC's combat and i'd be happy.  the super hero in gotham city ala gta just sounds so kick ass.

give us a collection of batman's biggest foes to fight, thugs and mobsters to take out, gadgets to hunt for bad guys, radio scanners to hear police responders calls and a few interesting ways of getting around town, and you got a hit on your hands.  surprised it hasn't been done with batman before.

not sure what they should do with simon pegg.  on one hand, he's a great actor to cast, but scotty was just so iconic in his older years that it's hard for anyone to really replace him.  i saw that pic and it doesn't do much for me.

i think it will be difficult for any of us to get a good feel for a character and the actor until we see what direction the story is taking.  if they go for a more serious tone ala nolan's batman, then the actors may be just right.  who knows.
