but how long could Oblivions main quest be finished in?

The speed record is something like 10 minutes slywink  I find those kinds of measurements are largely useless.  If you tear through the game with blinders on, I suspect you could get through it less than 10 hours.  But how anyone could play that way, particularly on a first run through, completely eludes me.  I seriously doubt anyone playing for enjoyment will be able to finish the main quest in under 20 hours.  Maybe I'll give you 15, but I don't think it would be less than that.  Everyone does play differently though, and I just think there are too many different ways to go about experiencing the game to give a lot of weight to a measurement like that.  There's tons and tons of gameplay in the game - the 450+ page guide should be testament to that smile

10 minutes?!

geezus, why not just have a big button in the jail cell that pops up "you won. game over" and be done with it.

Having problems charging spells? I have two solutions:

1) Raise Dead. I always kept that on Tier 1. I toss that towards somebody and the AI wants to kill them and generally ignores you.
2) Slow Time. I always kept that on Tier 2. Takes only a second to charge, and between that and Raise Dead, the AI ignores me long enough to easily get a Tier 4 fired off.

The guide recommends both of those with either Inferno or Storm (or whatever the electric one is called) as the primary.  Looking at the stats, I went with electricity.  It seems to do more damage and stuns the enemy.

yeah, I use Slow Time in order to get my level 5 Inferno off.  Last night I made it through the Spire...

Is there any way to charge up a spell without standing around like a mannequin and letting baddies whomp on you?  I've maxed out Inferno, but rarely use it because it takes so damn long to charge and I hate being used as a tackling dummy while it's revving up.

That is supposed to be the trade off for using more powerful spells (similarly for the melee charge attack).  The easiest way to handle that may be to have a force push or time slowdown at a lower level so you can use that and then while the enemies are trying to recover you can charge up your big spell.  I'm not a full-time caster, but that seems like the logical solution to me.

i only end up using inferno at higher levels when i first start out a fight.  i can stand up to a few hits if they still need a moment to approach me.  beware though, because despite what the game says, i have been knocked back (and out of a spell charging) with a power attack.

I can't recall the specifics but Kathode laid out the changes IIRC so maybe do a search of his posts?  From what I remember of his description, the CE has a lot of really, really great bonus material and background.  It was enough to get me to order it.

yup.  exactly what i did

How does lockpicking work in the PC version?  I just skimmed the 360 review here and I had forgotten about Oblivion's lockpicking.  I have truly lousy physical dexterity.  I suck at shooters, etc.  One of my pet peeves is adding "twitch" factors into a RPG.  I know I am in a minority here, but that's what the stats are for!  Of course, that is why I usually dislike action-rpg/action-adventure games.  The thought of (the 360 version) of using 2 thumbpads to pick a lock means that I will never finish the game.  I hate the concept.

In the tutorial you run across a lock, and there's a splash screen that explains it, but it appears you use the mouse to move one pick and the keyboard to move the other.  unfortunately I clicked past it by accident and ended up using 3 bobby pins before it unlocked, but I'm not sure exactly what I did.  there's also a chance you can force a lock.

i totally missed the lockpicking tuturial...  hope it's in the manual or guide.

8418  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fallout 3 impressions thread on: October 28, 2008, 06:13:57 PM
well, despite my intentions, i did in fact get this last night and put in about two hours worth (eyes drooping as we speak)  due to a late night shopping trip that my wife cooked up at 11pm.  i waited until her plan was good and solid and then sprung the "btw, i think i'll pick something up while i'm out" on her.  all told, i got about 3 complete rotations of her eyes last night, but it was worth it.  stood in line about 15 minutes before they started off and was the 4th person buying it.  good timing.

i was able to play a bit, while skipping the manual (of course).  glad to see that you get the 11th hour respec ala oblivion just before you leave the vault.  i may do that once i have read up in the manual.  kathode, please give a big thank you to whomever was responsible for making the manual and for those who decided to make it as large as it was.  big  thumbsup

i loved the "first sight of the outside" world moment.  nice touch.  i had a huge grin when i heard who was on the enclave radio station.  awesome choice right there.  view distance is very nice and as a future sniper/stalker, appreciated.  found a few small details on my trek over to megaton and it is a great looking game, putting it right alongside gta4 in overall immersion.  small loads into buildings and little to no loads back out.  not perfect, and i would have loved to see seamless buildings in the outside world at least as i feel the split from outside/inside breaks the immersion.

took two quests while in the town and watched the sun set.  man it does get nasty dark at night and i didn't feel well equipped to be out by myself right then, but i did not find the right person to rent a bed for the night.  i did go out slightly before dawn and found my first quest target.  i see several ways that bit could be resolved which is a huge improvement over oblivion.  not just a black and white choice either, but multiple methods to get the job done.  sweet.

i found a few scattered enemies and with my perception at 7, able to choose my encounters.  too bad it couldn't improve my own perception as by the time i approached the second quest target, i was spotted by a demon dog and a rifle toting bandit.  i think they were fighting each other, but the dog made me as an easier target and attacked me instead.  i backpedaled from the bandit while firing off rifle shots (which all missed due to me running like mad) and i was finding it hard to select either the pistol or my trusty baseball bat and taking a lot of damage.  i popped a stimpack (these things will be critically important early game) and thought i could turn it around.  well, apparently, the bandit's buddy was coming back from a hunting trip or something as he caught me by surprise and promptly turned me into the wasteland's newest piece of burnt corpse with his flamethrower.  oh well, at least the dog had a hot meal.

after long last, it is finally here.  a chance to see whether kathode should be praised or brazed.  slywink  personally, i haven't been this existed for an rpg since the other bethesda game, and i expect to get as much game time out of this as i did in that one.

of course, when oblivion was released, we didn't have the glut of other triple A games to contend with, so the addiction could be more painful this time around as the other games get neglected while we all wander around dc in power armor.

so, who's doing the midnight launch madness?  no go from me, even though the lure is high.  make sure to take a break this time and give the rest of us something to read (and drool over) until we get our copies in the morning or later.

Yeah, I don't know...

30 miles from where I live, we have 4 wind farm projects.  The first phase is done, about 10 miles from the coal-fired power plant where they'll put that electricity generated from the first 60 turbines on the grid.  Eventually, there will be around 300 wind turbines in that area.

Each turbine requires hundreds of yards of concrete, brought in from 60 miles away.  Each turbine, blade set and tower is brought in from the east coast by rail and trucked the last 300 miles to the site.  Each turbine requires that 6 semi-trucks (1 for turbine engine, 2 for blades, 3 for tower) and twelve pilot cars make that 600-mile round trip.  So, 10,800 miles per turbine on the highway and thousands of miles by diesel-powered rail.  Then there's the energy required to engineer, manufacture and produce each unit - impressive pieces of machinery, to be sure.

The first phase, according to the utility, will provide 16.8 megawatts of power when fully functional, enough to power an average of 4,300 households per year and the turbines are projected to last for 25 years.  That's some pure, clean, renewable energy.  So clean that if we consider the carbon footprint of the manufacture and installation of each turbine, if they operate trouble-free for 25 years, we could actually break even.

It's schadenfreude.

pitifully sad when you put it that way.  don't forget the carbon footprint of all the people who designed, manufactured, delivered, installed, operate and maintain the site.

well, after ~10 hours of playing, i finally figured out what the H those gargoyle statues are.  it was driving me crazy to hear those damn impish voices insulting me, and then i saw one above an archway.  it was satisfying to blow it up with the rifle i have.

i find that money making offline is much slower than i thought it would be, something like 1 payoff per hour vs the every 5 minutes or so in game.  oh well, it won't hurt i suppose and if you play it evil, you can make more off them.   icon_twisted

my fiancee (in game jeweller in bowerstone) broke up with me after a few days of not getting married.  i think i'll use the 20k i have earned, buy a house, woo her again, marry her, then find out what the "wheel of evil" is all about.  icon_twisted  i hear spouses get bonus points too.

anyone notice that the regular jobs time out?  i had that happen with the blacksmith and i wonder if i'll be able to finish off the job to level 5.  it is harder, but the money is better than wood chopping for me.  i also advanced far enough to do a merc mission.  nothing too hard, just clearing out a basement full of bugs, but it paid pretty well.

i have found a wandering book seller who helped me train my dog to level 3 in both treasure and fighting, and now i see he gets beaten up during fights more often and needs healing.  we are still evil, although i think i see him turning brown again.  i'm still very blue, and can see strong chest muscles over a slight paunch (too much fatty foods i guess).  no magic running through my veins, but i try to mix it in now and again.  using the fire spell pretty exclusively as the force push just didn't seem to be as helpful.  ranged combat allows me to zoom in for more damage, but it's very slow.  melee unlocked combos last night, and those are very nice.  combine that with flourishes, and i can handle a mob nicely.

great little moment last night when a villager remarked that i was quite scar free for being such a well known fighter.  i had one odd thing happen when wandering around old bowerstone.  a villager attacked me on sight.  needless to say, she didn't put up much of a fight, but thankfully, i wasn't charged with anything.

getting further into the story and fought some tougher enemies than bandits and hobbes (sp?), plus a large boss, which was cool.
