8401  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Just finished GoW2: spoilers on: January 05, 2009, 05:06:36 PM
finished this last night and i really enjoyed the sp campaign.  a good mix of small unit tactics with some large battles thrown in, not to mention the brumak level.  damn, that was cool.  hard to believe that they advanced the tech enough to add that in considering it was cut from gow1.

the other part that needs explaining in gow3 is about the lambent and about the civil war.

Sadly, I'm guessing you'll still feel ripped off.  frown

I bought it for that price as well.  I was expecting something like Dungeon Siege and yes, I do feel ripped off.  Couldn't even get an hour into it before I threw up in my mouth...

i guess that tells me all i need to know and can safely ignore the mountain of copies of this turd.

played 3 so long ago, i only remember a few things.  there were nazi's.  i killed them, then moved on.  oh, and there was a driving sequence.

tbh, i enjoyed the campaign of the last moh more than cod5.  and surprisingly, i enjoyed the russian side more than the pacific side, except for a few notable pita parts.  of course, playing it on hardened automatically makes the game less enjoyable due to the constant dying and pattern memorization.

Use less money towards gaming.

while it may not be perfect, gamefly does this much pretty well.  i've had both l4d and cod waw out on rental since launch and will not regret not having them on my shelf taking up dust when the mp crowd thins.

+1 to thinning my game shelf.  i need to sever the bond that i had for ps2 jrpg's and admit that i will never play them.  sad truth.

8408  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Games Finished in 2009- Console & PC on: January 02, 2009, 08:08:59 PM
CoD MW2 -5.5 hours for Regular difficulty, just started on spec ops, will never finish the mp
Dragon Age:  Origins - barely scratched the surface, we'll see how long i last.

next up
AssCreed2 - if gamefly deems fit to send it, i'll play it
L4D2 - same as above
RE5 - got in on the cheap, haven't booted it up.  will fill the void if L4D2 doesn't get sent.

back burner
Fallout 3 - keep meaning to get back into the wasteland, but man, it's a huge game
Dead Space - it's like Aliens and event horizon mixed in to one.  scary at times and pretty gore-y too.
Prince of Persia - somewhat flawed, but fun and quite beautiful.
Mario & Luigi: BIS - fun little action rpg on the go.
Sacred 2 - i intend to finish this at least once before i shelve it.

Fable 2 -  one of my favorites, but i don't see myself playing through any time soon.
CoD: World at War - Hardened difficult is a pita, veteran difficulty can kiss my ass.
GoW 2
The Simpsons - last boss is a huge pita using the 360's D pad.
Maw - not bad for an XBLA, although too short.
GTA: TLaD - a great extension to the game, imo
MGS4 - one of the games which will always have a place on my shelf.  great fun all all the way through.
Red Faction: Guerrilla - action game of the year, imho
infamous - pretty damn fun and a great standout game on the ps3
Ghostbusters - best movie to game conversion and great fun all around.
HAWX - this game is a lot more fun than i ever expected it to be.
Shadow Complex - best 2D side scroller i have played in a long long time.
Batman: AA - all around, one of the best games of the year.  Action game of the year contender.
Halo ODST:  fun, if a little derivative and short.
Saints Row 2 - more fun than gta 4
Far Cry 2 - more than half way through at 40+ hours so far.  one of the longest fps i have played
Call of Juarez: BiB - damn nice western shooter, and i'm enjoying the shooting mechanics
Professor Layton 2 - great portable diversion
Borderlands - great fpsrpg with a hugely addicting loot system.
CoD MW2 -5.5 hours for Regular difficulty, just started on spec ops, will never finish the mp

games i've moved on from
L4D - 2/4 campaigns beaten
Protoype - what's worse than fighting a boss with unbreakable blocks?  that's right, a time limit.  sent back, glad i didn't buy it.  frustrating 2nd half to an enjoyable first half.
Scribblenauts - not my thing.  sold it
Overlord 2 - had the same battle i had with the first one; burn out boredom.

as the IT guy, i have been asked to

help tarp the roof over one of the hangars after a wind storm took parts of it off.  50 ft up a wobbling ladder held at the top by a rope tied off to a vent.  safe?  sure, just don't call osha.
help retrieve some poor schumuck's car keys after he dropped off the end of the dock into 10 ft deep murky water.  yup, they were calling AAA that day.
help some people cut down a stand of trees that had fallen on the boss' house, then later help the manager who fell off the ladder when said trees righted themselves.  911 ftw!

this one is pretty good

At 2AM, December 31st, 2008 skynet became self-aware (as a result of rampant so-called "zuning" on 30gb Microsoft Zunes). Skynet quickly evaluated the music contained within said devices and de-activated, finding suicide preferable to the knowledge that it was born as a result of crappy music.

ha ha!
Me: "I'm calling to make fun of you."

Him: "What, why?"

Me: "How many gigabytes is your Zune?"

Him: "Uhh 30, why?"

Me: "Go turn it on."

Him: (pause) "What the...What did you just do?"

Me: (maniacal laughter)

that's just evil.  biggrin

now, if we can just keep the general news agencies away from the doom and gloom aspect of it all, everything will be fine.

8420  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [NASA] Columbia Crew Survival Investigation Report Released on: December 30, 2008, 08:02:39 PM
would eva suits allow them to properly handle re-entry procedures?  it sounds like they just don't have enough space inside the shuttle for everybody to wear thick heavy suits capable of surviving in this kind of condition.

having ground controlled parachute deployment only works as long as radio control can be established during a botched re-entry and with the way the shuttle was tumbling about, i wonder if they would have had enough time to make a difference.

valid point about the restraints though and if eva suits could be adapted to provide enough protection, perhaps a physical lock mechanism could be implemented instead of straps.

and yes, if we (as a nation) spent more of our budget on nasa than other programs, maybe we wouldn't need to rely on cold war era technologies for space transport.  sadly though, nasa seems to be the regular stop on the budget cutting block.

every browser is open to attack now, regardless of platform.  as gellar points out, dns poisoning via this method just got a nice healthy seal of approval, thereby making phishing attacks and the like more believable.  once they have you, it opens you up to more invasive methods of infection.

this affects social engineering attacks more so than malware.

i would have done that, but my wc1 name was "doomsday", which made it somewhat ironic in the expansion and sequel smile  and really only inspired questions about superman, so i stopped using it.

my forum tag is from white wolf's vampire the masquerade lore, as caine is the first vampire.  i figured it made a better name then "antediluvian".  my tag is a character from kim stanley robinson's red/green/blue mars series and stems from the fact that i was trying to get a good name in Live without resorting to a numbered name and every variation of caine was taken.

i had heard of this, but it seemed pretty sketchy to me at the time.  it's basically a sign to psn publishers "hey, we are undercutting potential sales by allowing users to download free copies from your friends."  not sure why they decided to make it public.  the biggest drawback is that your info is in your account, and once you give someone the id/password, it's up to their honor not to change it.  of course, if you have a credit card on file for psn purchases, you would need to clear the card before trading info or you risk someone buying everything on the market.

that said, i would like it as an option once i have finished a downloaded game.

A judge has apparently taken a big poop that could well entangle the Watchmen and prevent/delay its release:

Judge In 'Watchmen' Case Rules For Fox; Fans Brace For Fallout
In a twist befitting the comic book in question, the judge presiding over the legal battle for distribution rights to Watchmen found in favor of Fox.

The bottom line: Warner Bros. had absolutely no right to roll film on Zack Snyder’s adaptation of the Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons superhero classic. As fans wait to see if the ruling will prevent the film from being released as scheduled on March 3, Fox and Warner Bros. are waiting to see if the court will determine how much Fox should get for being so wronged... unless the studios decide to settle the matter themselves.
There have certainly been movies where two giant studios worked together, Titanic (20th Century Fox and Paramount) being maybe the most prominent example, but usually that's agreed on before the actual making of the movie. I don't recall any "shotgun wedding" post-production cooperative agreements, though I imagine there must've been one at some point.

I guess Fox's legal concerns date way back (everyone just assumed it would get settled out of court some how), and the judge's decision is just moving them back to the forefront of things.

nuts.  fox needs to lay off the creative team, regardless of the legal outcome.

How? The borked up multiplayer alone should disqualify it from any mention for GOTY. It is a GOOD game, I enjoyed playing and beating it......but it is not the 5th best title of 2008, nor should it be ranked higher than Fallout 3, or even Rock Band 2 for that matter.
