81  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Biggest disappointment/surprise of the year 2015 on: December 21, 2015, 07:02:23 PM
Ok, we have ATB's GotY thread, now it's time for the biggest disappointment.  What game did you have high hopes for and felt did not live up to the hype?

I think that MGS V is mine.  We had this story of revenge, redemption and the Big Boss's fall from grace.  What we got was well, not.  I won't spoil it here, but suffice to say, the story ends with one of the biggest WTF third acts and left a plot heavy mission on the cutting room floor.  Whether it was Kojima or Konami, they killed a lot of good will with this game, long before the rest of the feud was public.

After Teggy's response below, I added the Surprise element we have had in years past.  What game game out of nowhere for you that you loved either more than you expected or had not followed until it was released?
82  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: GOTY 2015 on: December 21, 2015, 06:47:17 PM
The Witcher 3 is my GotY.  All of my issues are technical.  Large, believable world, multiple endings to quests, fun combat and gameplay mechanics.  Stays solid throughout without breaking down at the end.  Satisfying storyline.

Runner ups

Fallout 4.  Closest to GotY but interface/UI/reduced dialog kills it.  Fewer ways to resolve quests/take sides.

Batman Arkham Knight.  Great story, fun, if rote standard combat, car combat that gets deeper but doesn't become great.

MGS V:  Probably the best open world stealth action game ever made, but the story takes a massive bad turn in the last third, alongside a bad decision to force replaying missions as part of the story progression.
83  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Rise of Tomb Raider on: December 21, 2015, 04:43:12 AM
Took a few days in between, but I finished off the game on survival difficulty.  The end was an odd mishmash of MGS-style boss fight, stealthy sequence out of nowhere and over almost before it begun.  Finished with about 94% complete.  Overall, the game was pretty enjoyable.  Graphics were great and the stealth and combat was improved from the fist game.
84  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC, PS4, XB1] Just Cause 3 on: December 21, 2015, 04:19:58 AM
Yeah it helped immensely.  Load times were down to 10 seconds or less.  Not only was I able to play for a bit, I got a number of challenges done.  The game is big, shallow and fun for blowing off steam.

Patch 1.02 Now Live on PC!

Quote
I'm pleased to let you know that the 1.02 patch we announced earlier today is now live, ahead of the anticipated Friday date.

In the 1.02 patch (132.1MB), you can expect:

    Significantly improved loading times
    Optimizations to online stats
    General stability fixes
Fixed an issue related to challenges, wherein vehicles sometimes disappeared when starting a challenge
Fixed issues related to screen resizing and closing the game window before the game has fully started up

So I'm going back to playing and see if this fixed the CTD issues I've been having.
[/quote]

SNIP....

I really hope they can get this through certification on consoles quickly.
92  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Rise of Tomb Raider on: December 15, 2015, 10:25:16 PM
I am at the point of no return with this game, well almost.  I have gotten to where the game has told me that once I progress, there are no further camps, so no backtracking, weapon upgrades or skill upgrades.  I have about 90% completion and have backed out to get a few of the upgrades I can get before I start the end-game sequence.  I intend to finish this up tonight, but unlike the previous game, I doubt I will be going back for the 100% completion.  It's not that the game isn't worth it, but after 30+ hours, I'll have lost the drive to pick everything up.  Great game, if not for the stumble of launching across from Fallout and with the stigma of the exclusivity deal.
93  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: HURTWORLD........not another one. on: December 15, 2015, 10:15:01 PM
I have played a few and there are a couple of solid standouts and watched a few others.

7 Days to Die - smooth voxel based build, craft, survival vs hordes of zombies.  The crafting system is pretty in depth, requiring you to make molds for ammo creation and offer a variety of upgrades for structures.  Has both proc gen worlds and a crafted one. Regularly updated, MP, dedicated servers available.  I have played this the most as it has a good balance of risk/reward.

Subnautica - Underwater survival on a foreign planet.  Looks gorgeous and has some very enjoyable mechanics.  Crafting is manageable not exhaustive.  Has a good progression between day 1 and day 14, with you working your way up from an escape pod to a fully equipped sub that can become your mobile base.  Moderate amount of danger through all stages of development.  Updated fairly regularly, SP only, no plans on MP.  Played 10 hours, got the big sub and now have a larger world to explore.

The Forest - Stranded on an island after a plane crash.

Empyrion:  Galactic Survival - Voxel based mining and crafting, with multiple planets, interplanetary flight and exploration.  While the planet - space transition is artificial, it makes for a nice bump in performance.  MP, dedicated servers, updated fairly regularly.  crafting is nice in that it lets create some advanced items without having to build every piece in between.

Planet Explorers - SP and MP voxel based mining and crafting.  SP mode is similar to a traditional MMO, with small quests standing in for a tutorial.  Crafting options exist for vehicles, weapons and structures.  Alien world generation can be very unusual.  Updated irregularly.

Watched but not played

Stranded Deep - Think Castaway, with your goal being self sufficiency and eventual escape from the islands.  You vs. the environment and hostile animals.  SP only.

Reign of Kings - Rust style MP focused with castle building and siege engines.  Crafting seemed good, but tuned for a group.  Combat similar to Chivalry

ARK Survival Evolved - Dinosaurs, hunting and taming. MP focused with groups being more effective than lone wolf.

Savage Lands - Medieval / Celtic mythology based survival.  Feels like Rust mixed with Skyrim.

Winding down the end of the year with a handful of games and the first" early access on a console" game that I am aware of, and it's a favorite on PC.  Will the console players respond to it the way Steam users have?  This will be a good test of the program.  Beyond that, we have a small amount of games hitting this week.

Yesterday when I played the PS4 version, the load times were atrocious. At one time I spent what must have been 3 minutes at a load screen. Today things were much better, with no load screens truly outstaying their welcome. I suspect that the absurd load times from the first day must have had some relation to the online communication.

Agreed on those load screens, and it's very spotty.  had a few reloads due to attacking a base with air support and it was either 30 seconds or ~3 minute loads for the same exact location.  It makes the challenges a huge pain in the ass as you load in and load out for each attempt.

I played for about 5 hours and have shelved it for now.

Not my kind of game but it is interesting.

Well, it looks like a far cry game.  Hunting, collecting and crafting with ranged and melee combat with a decent stealth system.  I would be feeling more like getting it were it not for the glut of other open world games and if it felt more than a mod for FC4.

Agreed.  Dead is my interest in paying $15 for a game I already have and could play on pc for a third of Sony's asking price.

I didn't, but picked everything up and had to slow walk back.   Even worse, I told Dogmeat to stay back at the top of the hotel and had to go all the way back to get him afterwards.

Haven't had any issue with 10 and Steam.  I did have an issue like that come up in Win 7 though after a driver install failed.  Steam wouldn't even run unless I had in compatibility mode.

Just a note that Best Buy will have this on sale for PS4/XB1 tomorrow for $35. With GCU, you can pick it up for a cool $28, which I fully intend on doing.
I did this and await the game to be delivered tomorrow.  Not that I will end up playing it yet, I still have Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fallout 4 and Just Cause 3 before it.
119  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What are you buying this week? (12/1) on: November 30, 2015, 03:19:05 AM
This is it, folks.  The last big launch day of the year.  Not usually a big week, but in fact we have three major titles and a smattering of smaller ones.  For my part, I only have one game to pick up, despite the sales of Steam, Green Man Gaming, PSN, XBL and others, and on top of that, got it for 1/3rd normal due to some discounts and codes.  I did end up buying a R9 290 GPU to replace my four year old card and make Fallout look/run better though, so it's clearly a loss in the savings department.

On to the games.

Have it pre-ordered on PS4 (can't argue with 20% off) and looking forward to tearing down the government of whatever country we are going. They upped the destructive capability.
