That's reassuring.  Hopefully, those early screenshots were from some abomination which has since been sent back to the hells from which it spawned.
Good.  Glad that they decided to drop that.

So, what's the story with this 15-gig Day 1 patch for the Master Chief Collection?  Is it possible to interrupt this for the sake of playing the campaigns, or is it basically locked down until finished?

-Autistic Angel

I read somewhere that, basically, the campaigns took up the whole disc, so the 15-gig Day 1 patch is the multiplayer components. Not sure it's accurate, but makes some sense (and means you'd probably be able to play the SP before the patch is done downloading?)
Wow, that's some amount of content that they had to strip out the mp maps from the disc.

Yeah, they've said that the big download is multiplayer-only components, so it would ensure people who "needed" that content to play would already be online.

From Game Informer's review:

Quote from: Matt Miller
The missions have little hand-holding, and youíre often expected to think creatively and solve problems on the fly. It makes this the most challenging Assassinís Creed title by a wide margin, and itís easy to get frustrated. The higher difficulty is pervasive, including in the newly revamped approach to stealth. Guards are far more aware than in previous games, and even new stealth options are rarely enough to keep anyone fooled for long. The combat system values punishment over communicating a sense of power; I like the increased need for observation in fights, and the expectation that I use all the tools at my disposal. However, the absence of reliable counters to devastating ranged shots is infuriating, and sometimes there are just too many enemies to understand whatís happening on screen.

I will be very interested to try this out for myself.  Based solely on this description, it sounds like exactly what I've wanted from the Assassin's Creed franchise for a long time: a sense of danger to the combat.  Even Brotherhood, which did combat flow better than any entry before or since, was more about slaying with style than fighting for your life.

On a side note, Miller scored Assassin's Creed: Rogue (8.25) a notch higher than Unity (8.0) and wrote:

Quote from: Matt Miller
For players trying to figure out which game to tackle first when two Assassinís Creed games release on the same day this year, the answer is to start here. Shayís story closes a number of story loops left behind on the American front of the Templar/Assassin conflict, and offers a crucial first step into the new European theater of war. Rogue proves why itís time for the franchise to chart some new territory, but leaves no doubt about why we fell in love in the first place.

I was considering waiting for the PC version in January, but with that Target B2G1 free sale still going on....

-Autistic Angel
Yeah, this would be a complete no-brainer if they had PC or PS4/XB1 versions now.  I really enjoyed AC4 and this has a great expansion on everything I liked about it.

Anyone run into this in their play yet?  Curious if this repeatable for everyone.

I pulled up a stream of this on PS3 and it has a huge "Black Flag mod" feel to it, but it also ties in a lot of stories from both III and IV with some times to Unity as well, at least at the historical setting.

Also seen some of the modern stuff and little nods to Far Cry 3 and another AC game, Phoenix Rising.

Looks like a good expansion to AC IV.

Anyone picking this up?

So why is it that you can go out and buy/download a copy of this right now and play, and yet reviews can't be posted until noon EST?  Why on earth would a review site agree to this?

Because the difference between getting a review out immediately, and getting it out a few days after release, makes a huge difference to the page views. The publisher sits with all the power here.

As much as I hate EA and Bioware (in its current form), at least they did the right thing by lifting the Dragon Age: Inquisition embargo one week before that game's release. Ubisoft on the other hand is notorious for lying in its screenshots and videos (so-called "bullshots" created from extremely supersampled renders in situations and positions that would never occur in the actual game), creating lots of preorder incentives, and then setting the review embargoes and NDAs to after the game's release.

As with most of these things, it's the consumers' fault for pre-ordering games. If only people would stop doing that, this kind of behavior by publishers wouldn't be encouraged. But of course this won't happen. Gamers expect to have their cake and eat it too, even if they don't get to know what cake it is or whether or not it's made by someone who actually knows how to make a cake.
Cake semantics aside, it's been a campaign to get pre-orders up with incentives for pretty much every major game studio.  It makes it a bit more enticing to get some virtual baubles early on than have to pay for them later or wait for the next-years edition with everything added in.  (a cake of cakes, if you will).  Most times, those pre-order bits are minor, but EA has done this in the past with ME3 and other games and it can have an effect throughout the game.

I think most of us throat-stabbing enthusiasts were at least already heavily inclined to purchase this year's installment, failing any sort of major collapse of the studio.

More examples of AC engine jankiness.  I just an NPC walk up towards the hero and a dead target, then over a gate and through an outside wall.  This after another witnessed said assassination and walking casually away raising any kind of alarm.

Got say I'm a little disappointed in the AI I've seen so far.  Little if any improvement over previous games.

Bleh maybe I'll end up skipping this one.  Wish FC or GTA was releasing this week!
Fwiw, it still looks like fun and if you have interest in revolutionary France then it's an easy recommendation imo.

My copy is in the mail, so I should have some impressions of my own soon.

I watched some leaked gameplay videos last week, and noticed some pretty extreme pop-in for the crowds. The game would replace one NPC model with a completely different one right in front of your eyes. I saw people that were just in front of the player character completely change their costume (including adding a hat!) in an instant.

Is any of that in these new streams?

I wouldn't call it extreme, but I have witnessed flags popping in as you moved through a crowd, which is a bit jarring.

The game does have that level of AC-brand reality defying moments though.  Main char was walking a tightrope above a crowd and nobody notices it.  Crowds are made up of lots of identical twins.

The engine really shines at times though.  Walking around in a sunlit palatial room and everything is well detailed and the smoke and defused sunlight are quite nice to look at.  Shame they had to dump the time progression though.
94  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4/XB1/PC] Assassin's Creed Unity on: November 10, 2014, 06:45:01 PM
ok, I just timed a load between two cutscenes and it was 45 seconds.  Ouch, that's going to get annoying.  Granted, the load time results in having all of Paris in the game to roam around in, so it's just one of those trade-offs we have to deal with.
95  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4/XB1/PC] Assassin's Creed Unity on: November 10, 2014, 06:26:19 PM
Well, based on the early video, I haven't seen any npc pop-in.  The cover mechanic is about what you expect from a third person sneaking game.  Hard to tell graphics quality due to the stream, but loading screen after the mission I watched was a bit long imo.  There was a pretty big crowd in one section and it looked pretty good.

I don't know Leo.  Maybe they should trade that draft pick they got from the Harvin trade and try getting Golden Tate back.  Tongue

That really urks me.  Come on SE, stop fucking around with this consumer-hating garbage.  First you drop TR2 from a mult-plat to exclusive for money, now you add f2p transactions to an open world game?  If they go this route, then I'll have no trouble skipping your games.

SE, are you trying to top EA for the most hated gaming company?

Consumer hating garbage?

Dude, you really need to look at SE's history with where Final Fantasy has landed - they've never EVER had a problem with swinging on one console or another.
Yeah, I guess that's true enough for Square's properties.  I'm still annoyed that they did this with Eidos' games despite how well TR sold and was received on both platforms.  They are expecting FF level returns on games that have not had the same historical selling patterns.  Equate this with what could happen if Activision bought Rockstar.  Now we suddenly have huge, CoD-level expectations for games like Bully or RDR or The Warriors.  It feels too much like the EA days when they shuttered good studios for not performing to their higher standards.

They started with Nintendo, dumped them (on console at least) during the PS1 days and was primarily a Sony console-only until XI and XIII.  They've targeted the console where they felt they would make the most money in return.  Trust me, I would love some of their DS titles to come out on Vita as well, but they don't see the point.

That urge that you get to go and hunt one of them down for revenge instead of focusing on the main quest or improving yourself in a more efficient way is what makes this game so great.

One aspect of the nemesis system that can work to your favor, even early on.  Death threat one who has killed you and also has an exploitable weakness, then hunt him and you'll get a better rune.  You can let him rank up a few times, but it can backfire if he eliminates those weaknesses when he levels.

Also, wraith stun is your friend. No matter what their strengths are, you can keep them locked up and whittle their health down.

Well, here we are with what would have been a punchline to a joke a few years back once Ubi decided to get yearly updates to it's AC franchise.  Split right in the middle of two generations and all the promise of an expanded take on last year's Black Flag and a new engine with much-requested co-op in Unity.  Halo gets the master package of games not named Reach or ODST and a fresh coat of paint over the whole thing.  It's also the best bang for you gaming buck with more MP levels than you could get bored of in a year.  Batman also makes his 3rd appearance in a blockier form than anyone thought before Arkham Knight was kicked out of 2014.  We also have the latest update to WoW
