81  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gamescom 2015- Up Next EA - Tomorrow 4 am est on: August 05, 2015, 05:45:55 PM
Sorry, the EA conference was earlier in the day and the main channel is basically in variety mode, which leads to long patches where either nothing is being shown or straight gameplay with no trailers.

That said, there has been a few new trailers posted

Twitch had an interview with the head developer.

So, you play as Lincoln Clay, an African American Vietnam veteran, in 1968.  You are going to war with the Italian mob after they take out your adopted family.

* Car takedowns
* Improved stealth
* Building your own empire
* Play your own lieutenants against themselves
84  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4/PC] Galak-Z The Dimensional on: August 05, 2015, 06:48:54 AM
Ok, about 2 hours of playtime and the game is a lot harder than I expected.  Died twice at the same stage to a missile cruiser.  The hard aspect comes in as if you don't finish 5 levels, you have to restart. from the beginning of the season.  It's a bit of a pain in the ass as you only have a few things that stay unlocked, like your blueprints (unlocks items you can buy at the mechanic), and tokens.  You lose all upgrades to your ship on death or when you finish a season (basically, 5 levels with 1 or 2 set piece objectives and the rest randomized).  At least that was different for the first two levels I played, but it basically boils down to this:  explore an asteroid, pick up whatever you need for the mission while finding 3 or so ship upgrades and surviving the bugs and imperial ships that inhabit it.  Those two will fight it out and let you either try to sneak around, or engage to take out the shielded imperial ships while they are occupied in a battle.  You can sneak around given that your ship only comes up on scanners if they are looking directly at you and if you keep your thrust low, you can sneak past them (or drift if you get the momentum up first).  There are also scouts who will signal for help if they get the chance, regular ships who do okay damage, and the cruisers who will put a dent in you if you are not careful and can carry missiles.  Those you can usually take out with a first strike with missiles of your own followed up by a burst of laser fire.

You then extract out to an external hyper space point, power up your drive and get away.  I made the mistake of trying to power up with a cruiser close by and before I could get some distance, my shields had dropped and I died not long after.  The tokens you receive can act as an insurance policy, letting you restart the season with either your money or your ship as you left it.

Upgrades and repairs can be made at the end of the level or during if you find the mechanic's ship.  There are different weapon types, which you can modify with a number of tweaks like spread, autofire, ricochet, and more I haven't seen yet.  You have to pay for ship repairs and this can be tense if you need to get out and he only has one to sell.  My first death saw me getting 2 bars of health, then getting caught by a cavern monster who took 1 away.  You can also buy temporary boosts to your shield, which are quite nice as they double your health, but are lost if your shield completely fails.

The overall style of the game is quite nice and the animation of the individual ships is good.

So far, I think this is a pretty good little game and given the random aspects of the game and the permadeath, should keep you interested for a while.

Wow, was not expecting them to nuke Dinklage from the game.  not only are they recording all new lines with Nolan North, but re-recording all old lines.

105  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mafia 3 Confirmed - More info @ Gamescom on: August 03, 2015, 04:56:55 AM
I think it may have a good sheen of nostalgia over the top of the flaws.  I certainly have forgotten a few of them about Mafia 2 that have come to light while watching a streamer play through that one.  For example, the checkpoints are so badly spaced and arbitrary that you can lose hours for small and stupid deaths.  One mission in particular pits you against 2 dozen enemies, half of whom are entrenched and throwing molotov cocktails.  The insult comes after you finish the mission.  To advance the next mission, you needed to pay a character 10's of thousands of dollars.  If you had not saved up for this surprise payout, your options to raise enough cash were limited to robbing the few and sparse stores, along with the associated cost of changing clothes and risk of death, or farming cars for the scrap crusher.  You did this without so much as a checkpoint from the beginning of the mission, before the shootout.

I saw a player spend an hour getting the shootout down enough to beat it, only to die to a random carjack victim who put up a fight after grinding cars to meet the payout for an extra 45 minutes.

This section was so bad I remember almost rage quitting after playing it on hard, and that was without the money grind afterwards.

115  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Swindle - 2D procedural heist game on: July 30, 2015, 03:38:42 AM
This game is hard for another reason that proc-genned games are:  shitty generation.  I had the same issue with Counterspy last year and that eventually benched the game in my eyes.  I've had mines that appear at the bottom of stairs, which while they let you attempt a hack, have always blown up about 2/3rds of the way through, regardless of how quick/accurate you do the button presses.  I've gotten rooms where a swiveling camera sits above a mine and a safe with patrols making it impossible to thin them out or get to the mine/safe.  I've seen windows 3 levels high on the right side of buildings that prevent you from climbing over to get back to the extraction without a double jump.  Enemies are often standing on top of 1 square wide platforms, preventing you from attacking them.

When you toss those kinds of things in with the slow ratcheting of the quantity and the enemy types, it's better to just quit to title if you are going to have a run without a safe.  It's better than risking dying and losing ground against the calendar.  You need to grind a fair bit after the first hack as without hacking 2 or bombs, for the locked doors, you will not be going very far in the second section.  The upgrade costs are a bit high imo, but getting that trophy for completing it under the limit will be a good challenge due to it.

The game can be beaten beyond the limit, in theory, as there is a trophy for completing it before it's up.  Whether you can or not is based on how fast and bad the levels become.  I could see it getting so out of whack that you could be left grinding for small cash on the ground, which would only be a band-aid.

The controls take some getting used to, like a lot of games of this genre (Rogue Legacy, La Mulana, Spelunky) and some times, they are not good enough to pull off really great moves.  I wish it was as precise as something like Spy Inc/Stealth Bastard.  It is a definite improvement over Counterspy though.

That said, I really want to continue on as I have a soft spot for hard rogue-likes once I get the basics down.
