84  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: I had a pretty sad encounter today at Rite Aid on: July 03, 2014, 03:46:29 AM
I've seen it on both sides when I worked retail.  I rang a guy up for some stuff (under $20) and when I gave him the total, he asked me if I knew about reparations.  I responded that I had and that I was waiting for mine from the Russian government for losses suffered during the revolution, then asked him if he wanted to pay by cash or credit.  I got an odd look for that but he paid and left.

I later was in a position of assistant manager and had two younger African Americans working with me.  One guy who came in tried his hardest to wait until I was free then finally relented and let the older, darker guy help him.  I wasn't able to see everything that went down, but my co-worker said that the customer was very stand-offish and was hesitant to answer any kind of questions.  When it came time to pay, my co-worker held out his hand to take the card from him and the customer instead threw it onto the counter.  He had barely stopped to grab the bag with his receipt and left with my co-worker holding the card out and trying to hand it back.  The guy came back about 5 minutes later, would not speak to either of the other guys and accused that the clerk was trying to steal the card.

He was so belligerent that I asked him to leave and told him that there were at least 2 other people who saw what happened and did not back his version of events. My co-worker felt hurt and insulted; I felt shame at having shared the same skin color as this customer.

My wife had a co-worker who would regularly threaten to sue the company if they ever let her go for racial discrimination.  It took years for them to get enough paperwork showing repeated performance issues before they could fire her.

long story short, you can run into racist a-holes when you least expect it.

I'm slowly making my way through the first season now.  Just crossed the halfway mark, episode 7.  It's a slow burn, but it is keeping my attention and I find myself wanting to watch an episode or two a night instead of game.  That's a good sign.

Who are you and what have you done with our Hetz?

Serious note, I'm glad that the UI is improved.  I have no interest in Ryse or the current crop of exclusives and only mild interest in DR3, otherwise I might find myself in the same boat you were in.

91  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Tomorrow is July 1, will we have ATB's GOTY? on: July 01, 2014, 05:43:09 PM
Of games released this year, I'd have to put Transistor at the top of the list.  Thief was a miss on most accounts.  Strider is fun and a great game, but the art, music and gameplay of Transistor is much better than any other game I've played from 2014.

Watch_Dogs gets the GOAT by being the sole nominee.
92  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Underwold: Ascension (Ultima Underworld spiritual successor) on: July 01, 2014, 02:43:14 PM
Saw this today on Polygon

Quote
OtherSide Entertainment is resurrecting the Underworld series of dungeon crawling role-playing games with Underworld Ascension, the newly formed studio revealed today.

Paul Neurath, a veteran of games like Ultima Underworld and the former co-founder of System Shock and Thief developer Looking Glass Studios, founded the independent development studio, which acquired the Underworld brand and is looking to hire developers.

Now all we need is a revival of Ultima without all that mp house building stuff they've added and it will be just like the early 90's again.

Sniper Elite 3 maybe for the XB1

Aren't those games terrible?

I haven't played it myself, but the last Sniper Elite game seemed reasonably well received.  Looked like a neat mix of assassinations, trap-laying, and run-for-your-life escapes through some fairly open level designs.  Also, x-ray kill cams.

Personally, having never even heard of Divinity: Original Sin before this morning, reading all the excitement here enticed me to get educated and make a purchase before the Steam sale ended.  Looks pretty neat!

There's some good walkthrough videos out there.  here's one about gameplay options.

Also, it hit PC on Friday, so you can hit up the reviews there.  So far, it seems pretty favorable.  Plus, it offers the whole campaign in co-op.

Well, got tricked into adding one more on the last day (Stanley Parable) - which put me over $100 for the first time in the sale. A lot of good looking games that I can play in spurts around the baby for a while to come...
Yeah, I hit $90 (Pre-tax).  Had you said that at the start, I would have laughed at you.  I averaged about 7.50 per game or expansion.  I held back from many big sales on games I honestly don't expect to play for a while and full-price games with only half-decent sales.  I might have swapped a few indie games if I wasn't expecting a game in a similar genre to come up soon.

Suarez out for 9 games and four months for his third career bite attack on an opposing player.

Seems kind of lenient for a 3rd offense and at the World Cup of all things.
Agreed.  He should be banned from the sport.  No place for that kind of aggression in sports.

I know soccer is thought of as a non-contact sport for some reason in the US, but have you seen the stomping, elbows, cleats up tackles, and portentional leg breaking challenges that often don't get much more than a yellow? There are many players known for this kind of behavior. A lifetime ban would be way out of wack for something that is stupid, but not really that dangerous. Suarez's racial abuse last year was worse than this.

US did not look good today, pretty sloppy and just didn't do much, but it was against a really good German side. Going to watch Belguim today and pay closer attention to who we are up against.
I think those attacks are also worthy of a ban if the player has a history of them and has show that they aren't going to change their ways.  Basically, any player that repeatedly oversteps the boundaries of sportsmanship.  Maybe a lifetime ban is too long, but if A-Rod gets a year for juicing and the Saints get busted up for year over the bounties, then multiple biting attacks should warrant a higher punishment than he got.
