7721  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Wired's 10 Most Disappointing Games of 2008 on: December 15, 2008, 10:46:34 PM
7. Stalker: Clear Sky (PC)
3. Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
2. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Xbox 360, PS3)
1. Spore (PC)

these 4 i played and only agree with spore.  stalker, while maybe not the game we all dreamed of back in 2005, is a great follow-up and does a lot more than i expected it to.
sw:fu was hyped, then trashed after release, but even though i think they missed out on an opportunity with the techs they unveiled, i had a lot of fun playing it and i wasn't expecting anything grand after the demo hit.
mario kart wii is functionally the same game as it has been for years, only this time with motion.  sadly, a sign that shows through on other N titles (animal crossing is the biggest example here).  it's still a lot of fun though.
spore had the most potential, but sadly became too big for it's own good and suffered from a design standpoint of complexity vs playability.

Disappointing doesn't mean bad. I was disappointed in Mercs 2, but I still consider it one of my favorite games of 2008, and I'm sure I'll play it for a long time.
i too was disappointed by what they failed to do, but i had fun with it.  to me, it's almost like a dynasty warriors game in that i already know how to play it, but i still enjoy the feeling i get going through the motions.  missed potential, but a solid game.

good topic starter though for a GOAT thread.
7722  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Home invasions by the police on: December 15, 2008, 09:48:16 PM
Quote
One of the most appalling cases occurred in Maricopa County, Arizona, the home of Joe Arpaio, self-proclaimed "toughest sheriff in America." In 2004 one of Arpaio's SWAT teams conducted a bumbling raid in a Phoenix suburb. Among other weapons, it used tear gas and an armored personnel carrier that later rolled down the street and smashed into a car. The operation ended with the targeted home in flames and exactly one suspect in custody--for outstanding traffic violations.

swat team assaults can get out of control.  here's a little event i watched unfold when i was a teenager.

in 1996 the county swat team staged a hostage situation in an abandoned building across the street from me.  the week before, we all got a letter stating what was expected to happen and that everything would be fine.  (basically, warning us about a door breaching charge).  that day, we all woke up pretty early and talked to the officers milling about before the big event started.  the county brought out an apc which was damn cool to see and we got a chance to ask the county "spokes-cop" about it.  no idea how many officers were involved, but there were city, county and wsp vehicles lined up down the block.

they had a few of their own inside with a couple more playing hostage.  they had snuck up a few guys and placed a sting of det cord around the front door and main window.  that was a loud enough blast to set off car alarms.  they popped off a number of tear grenades and started to storm the main entrance with the apc using it's turret to knock the door down.

this is when it all came apart.  the house was abandoned and set for demolition (hence the owner not caring what happened to it) and part of this was due to a tall tree which was planted much too close, resulting in the root system upsetting the foundation and making one side pretty unstable.  after the blast, and the apc knocking out a good chunk of the front entry way, the roof began to collapse, hitting a few of the officers inside.  the c4 cord also started up a fire, which spread from the front to the now exposed roof members and eventually it burned a sizable hole into the roof.  before we knew how bad it was, they had an ambulance and fire truck en route to help.  the tear gas was applied too liberally i assume as it was everywhere.  we eventually went back inside and tried to deal with it, so you can imagine the fun of the emt's and firemen.

eventually the fire was put out, but the house looked pretty beat up and i was shocked it didn't collapse all the way and nobody was seriously hurt.  but seeing this all go down, i wonder

obviously, i am not aware of everything surrounding this case, but i've seen how easy things can get out of control, especially when there is little control to begin with.

I think the fear is somewhat exaggerated. It would take quite an effort I believe, to pull it off, and I just don't see most hate mongering racists having the ability to do so. It's one thing to send racist cartoons, and another to actually commit to and succeed in assassinating a president.

There was a lot of hate for Bush, and I don't think there was any sort of attempt or plan, even.

Ale

never underestimate a crazy person with a plan.  mcveigh, dc sniper, etc.

i wonder if anything was ever attempted on bush and hidden from the media.  obviously, anything serious never happened, but i'd be surprised if nobody was ever caught in the planning stages.  don't forget the one case of attempting to kill barack at the dnc.

i really think the secret service (yes, SS was a bit jarring to read for me too) is up to the task of protecting their man.  they have been at this job for quite a while and are not letting situations happen when they don't have a position of security.  i've also seen and heard what kind of protections they build into their vehicles and equipment and to be sure, they can handle an armed ambush (and probably an army) long enough to extricate themselves.

were such an event to occur, the ISS crews would be able to see the fires at night.

one of the few benefits to living in the south end of the metro area.  no snow or icy roads, and although it's cold, i had a clear drive to work.  from the look of the parking lot, most of the locals had decent accumulation and tougher drives to work.  poor babies and their 30 minutes or less commute.

thanks for that mytocles.

Spoiler for Hiden:
i was under the impression that i could get access to some better armor than the talon mercs have.  although the one from crow sounds pretty cool though.

i looked in the guide for this info, but couldn't find anything.  btw, now that two of my traders are dead, does that mean their schematics are gone too?  maybe i got lucky with finding one on doc, but lucky didn't have one on his body, iirc
7729  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fallout 3 impressions thread on: December 15, 2008, 06:53:27 PM
having just wrapped up the little quest in canterbury, i am kind of sol in this regard:

Spoiler for Hiden:
doc hoff died a long time ago, by the bandits camping in the b&b outside arefu, and i watched lucky whats-his-name die when he took on a deathclaw.  of course, this makes roy's offers less attractive as there isn't anyone to take the traders' places.  it's both cool and annoying that valuable npc's can be killed without direct contact.  i found doc's body by the hotel's mailbox and his guard and brahmin were nowhere to be found.  i did not see or hear the conflict which killed him.  so, i now wonder what kind of trader upgrade each of these two would have had due to my investment.  i did put some change into upgrading crow's goods, so i really hope to meet him before he gets killed.

on the plus side, it means i found the schematic much earlier than i would have normally.

well, my hatred of dome turned around completely last night.  after a very normal start of 5 deaths in 2 minutes due to crappy spawns, i popped up and got the drop on 2 in that outside standalone perch, then one attacking a friendly, then another in the 2nd outside elevated camping spot, then a 5th after he missed with a sticky grenade, giving me an arty.  dropped that with uncanny luck and tore up three more. instant dogs ftw!!!!  they killed 5 all by themselves and i survived to see a 2nd friendly call them in again while taking out 7 more before running out of ammo.  biggrin

had i just enough good luck to reload a second faster with the smg i snagged and i could have gone to a 20 kill streak.

best damn night i have had so far even considering the profanity laced dill-hole who cursed us out after we slaughtered them on airfield, despite our reluctance to run out into the open like "real men" would, according to him.

last i heard, it was fall 2010 at the earliest for the next gen.  personally, i'm ok with that or even 2011 before getting a new system.  i am perfectly happy with the games at this stage and i don't feel it necessary to add motion to every 360 game out the door.  plus it means i still get to play whatever game i like without weighing the pros and cons of buying a new system just to do so.

dude.  if she really warrants enough attention to get a gift above and beyond your words and respect, i would give her $50 to a nice restaurant.  it's enough to pretty much cover two people for dinner and not require a lot of out-of-pocket expenses outside of a tip.  it's also pretty timely as she wouldn't likely be doing such a thing during a busy shopping season/downturn.  personally, if a manager gave me that kind of coin, knowing my family arrangement, i would be very appreciative that they value me enough to wish my wife and i to have a good night out without worry.

at this rate, i would be surprised if they satisfied the current market before the next gen comes out.  this could bite them in the butt though as many of the early adopters (myself included dec 06) have already moved on and are now wary/weary of a new wii system and those late adopters will be somewhat fresh off a console purchase and unwilling to upgrade for a marginal benefit.

with next generation approaching for a likely fall '10 release, there isn't as much time for people new to the system to feel like they have gotten the full benefit of ownership.

full list of BC games, straight from the horse's mouth

from this, i recommend
crimson skies - fun take on air combat with good action and humor.  still stands up pretty well graphically.
indigo prophecy - if she didn't play it on the pc, it's worth a shot here
dreamfall - same as above
conker's bad fur day - a raunchy take on the mario 64 style of game

the only problem i see is being able to find good copies of many games these days.

i recommend the saints row games.  1 is dirt cheap, and 2 is a ton of fun and has co-op.  (i forget if it's split screen though)

and the timelines of the different books are each a different timeline of their own.

i really like that they don't define one of the TL's as the proper one, thus discounting everything else.  of course, a lot of that is the result of not having one person or group in charge of the IP ala george lucas.

now we just need someone to redefine alien 3 and 4 and the avp movies and remake aliens 3 as the dark horse comics imagined.  then all would be good with the world.

not surprising considering how long the show lasted, but it's similar to snl in that if you sat down and watched a whole year's worth of episodes during one of the big years, you would come away with a lot more you had forgotten about.  i got the same effect after a bond binge from last year's $99 21 disc amazon sale.  or to a lesser effect when i watched all 4 sets of futurama every day for a week.

i intend to take it slow with this set though.
