Not only that - but remember, there are only 20 levels for your character to gain.  You may become over-leveled with all that cross-country tripping.  Just a thought...  icon_confused

Interesting thought..other than when I first came out of the vault, I haven't had any real problems with the battles- I guess it's because I always target the head and have high perception....I wonder if you can 'over level' or whether your SPECIAL attributes determine how easy or hard the game is...not that the two aren't related of course.

i do most of my dc travel above ground.  despite being a mass of wreckage, you can manage it.  it's just more likely to be super mutant battles instead of mutated animals/ghouls.  but you can still sneak around a good deal too.  i went overland all the way to rivet city for instance.

moo is a perfect fit, even if it takes away from gc's fanbase.

agreed on most accounts.  not as strong as CR by a pretty wide margin.  nobody in this film felt threatening, even the bad guy feels like a henchmen to a bigger bad guy.  sure, that seems to be the direction now, and the big meeting scene was well done and paints a good picture of future movies, it didn't do much for this one.

the car scene was ok, but it felt cut in half.

i liked it ok, but i really want a good follow up now.

Dude, one title absolutely heads up the list:

Earth Died Screaming by Tom Waits

After that, it becomes a question of thematic songs for the End of the World, or musically fit songs that properly convey post-apocalyptic asthetic?

London Calling - The Clash (thematic and musically fit)
Corona Radiata, Ripe (with Decay) or  Me, I'm Not (the 14 min long version) - NIN (for musically fit, thought not thematically fit)
The Day The World went away - NIN (thematic)
After the Gold Rush - Neil Young (Thematically & Musically fit?) - and arguably the #2 to Earth Died screaming

both thematically and musically i guess.  my list was a mix of that as well.

i have listened to all of the suggestions so far.  good choices all around.  some very dystopian sounding pieces, a number of heavier 'moment of destruction' songs and a few somber "hymn for the dead' style songs.  thank you everyone.

Love the Muse song they use in the trailer.  I have never read Watchmen, but I bought it recently at an airport bookstore after seeing someone else on another flight I was on reading it.  Haven't finished it, but enjoying it so far.

i also love the song used in the intro part with rorshach talking.

muse - take a bow is the song later on and a great fit.

R's voice is a pretty good match for the character too.  very strained and gritty.

this is looking good.

I just hate this current trend in movies having to be darker, grittier and depressing in order to be praised.

It seems to be the trend but I hope it ends soon.  A darker Bond, a darker Batman, a darker Battlestar Galactica, a darker Mickey Mouse (wait that is still in the planning stages).  It seems like darkness/violence is all that young people can relate to.  The biggest shows - non-repeats have been things like the Sopranos, the Shield, Deadwood, etc.  Dark sells right now.

the new star trek has been mentioned as an anti dark film, so that could be a good boost.

of course, we all know how the harry potter films have progressed, but that's more to the way jk rowling took the series, but yeah, people are going for more grittier films than they used to.

as long as they still make the fun ones, then i won't complain too much though.  i have wide tastes when it comes to movies and i don't favor one at the expense of the other.

and personally, i really liked CR.  who says that bond should be as campy now as it was then?  i just wanted a great movie about james bond, and they did that.
7739  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Wife lost her job, disability woes, unemployment - I need your advice. on: November 14, 2008, 08:19:45 PM
damn sorry to hear about this ron.  as said earlier, gt is the community it is because of you (and your staff, i'm not forgetting you either) and knowing that you are facing these kinds of problems is sad.

i would be very angry if the company i worked for pushed me out just because of a disability.  hell, they have had a less than good medical insurance rating due to a former employee who had cancer, and i know they didn't cut her loose.

definitely look for a lawyer/help group to consult with.  this sounds like a cop out by the company.

you didn't say, but what about the drivers from the other car accidents?  if she wasn't at fault, it should be possible to file a claim against them for damages.  i just hope you didn't already settle out of court on those accidents or you may have waived your right to file claims.
7740  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: October NPD numbers on: November 14, 2008, 07:35:43 PM
they really should put the release date in there, not just month.  comparing 4 days of october for fallout vs 11 for fable really doesn't make a fair comparison, but i am really happy fable sold that many already though.

790k for 11 days  71.8k per day
375k for 4 days 93.75k per day, just this version alone.  (in light of kathode's comments, i really wonder why they didn't add all versions to this chart)

saints row did badly though
270k over 18 days 15k per day, if you take a reasonable estimate of 190k for the ps3, that number only jumps up to 25.5k per day with a ~500k total units sold, and i am being optimistic.  is 500k enough for a sequel?  unknown, but how many units of sr1 were sold?
dead space's #s may not be enough to keep it afloat.  a victim of timing or interest?

of course, this being the monster season of 2008, i expect most of these numbers to stay high enough into 2009 as people get around to picking up games they missed.

Quote from: leo8877 on November 14, 2008, 04:33:44 PM

Sorry you guys don't like it.  The value for effort I got on the two titles I traded in was more than worth it.  Maybe someone else here will feel the same way.

no need to apologize leo.  i appreciate the work you put into posting this, and i do see the value if you have some of the older games on the list.  my beef is with gs and their handling of trade values for the more recent games.  imho, both of the ones i listed (and several more if you look) should be given a higher value than the older ones on the list.  it annoys me as i usually like to keep games around for a bit after playing them in case i want to replay again, and when or if i sell them, i hate having to cut my throat to sell it.  if i was going to sell gta 4, i would not be happy getting only 20 bucks for it, especially considering it hasn't dropped price yet.  same with any of the other games i have which still demand full retail price now.   once they have dropped 20 bucks or hit budget status though, i don't consider the drop in trade value that bad as the drop in used value is much easier to accept from my pov and if i bought it at 60 then it's my own fault for not selling it sooner.

gs annoys me as two of these games would resell there for 110 total, plus the 20 you gave them for a new game means they are making 70 bucks per transaction once those games sell.

note, i don't hate gs all around, and i have bought used games there before, but it was always due to some special of theirs (3 games for the price of 2) and never a recently released one.  i have also taken advantage of pre orders if it was a good offer or a game in high demand.
7743  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Watchmen: the end is nigh on: November 14, 2008, 06:33:54 PM
if the movie wasn't enticing enough for hardcore fanboy's (and alan moore) to hate on, then this should put them over the top.  apparently, a game is being made which takes place ~10 years before the events of the book and features rorschach and nite owl fighting crime.  there's a handful of pictures in the current issue of egm which look ok enough and i am reminded of the warriors, both by the look of the enemies and the general style of the environments shown.

in it's favor are a coop campaign and different fighting styles with both heroes.  R is weaker, but a more vicious fighter who will use any weapon he finds; nite owl relies mostly on his strength and gadgets (like batman, i would guess.)  it also has a story penned by Len Wein, who worked with moore and gibbons on the novel.  it also happens to be a downloadable episodic game ala penny arcade's, with an expected 12 chapters (nice touch, that) for both the major systems.

i just finished re-reading the novel a while back and i have to wonder:  how this could tie into the canon without either revealing the plot of the first one, or having a story so fleshed out that it's absence in the novel stands out.  i really hope they bring in the rest of the characters though, as it would be pretty cool to see the world fleshed out.

this part pretty much kills it for me though.

Ubisoft Montreal also saw fit to include a rubbish snowball-throwing mechanic, which works by letting you press B to instantly snatch a snowball from the ground, then hold B to aim it at your nearest opponent and release the button to fling it. Anyone who gets hit by a snowball instantly collapses face-first into the ground. Think of an un-aimed snowball as a tiny green shell (though capable of rapid fire) and an aimed snowball as a red shell. And yes, that means that in first place, the AI pelts you with what might as well be rocks at all times.

i hate that mechanic even worse than the rubber banding ai racers.  it's a cheap mechanic and always leaves me pissed off i lost a race rather than encouraged to see what i did wrong.

Looks to me like they're giving you $40 trade in value on a limited list of new to relatively new games. $20 each. Seems to me to be a lukewarm deal at best. I could be wrong, what do new'ish games typically trade in for there? (I hate GS too and rarely if ever go there).

especially the more recent ones.  mercs 2?  saints row 2?  only $20?  F that.  no way is that a good deal when they will just slap a 54.99 sticker on it.
7747  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Good post-apocalyptic music? on: November 14, 2008, 12:27:12 AM
i'm looking for music which fits the theme of an end of the world movie/game.  i have found that fallout 3's music is a great fit for that game in every way, and i am looking for other non game pieces in the same mold.

for instance.

In the house in a heartbeat - 28 days later - this evokes the desperation of the zombie movie
Pink Floyd -High Hopes  haunting intro, very somber song.  growing up, i pictured this song to a scene of b052's taking off with a load of nukes for russia.
Muse - Time is running out the video makes this obvious, but it has that modern rock 'screaming at the end of the world' feeling.
Metallica - The Memory Remains - i really liked the vibe from the last part of this song, both the guitar and the vocal by marianne faithfull.  damn haunting and i always associate this song with the matrix.
