7722  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Skyline trailer on: August 12, 2010, 06:12:11 PM
let's see, where to start?  they mention stephen hawking a few times.  two generic cops stare up at the sky; i expected to see will smith again, except this time he's a fighter pilot MIB cop who fights robots aliens and this time he's teamed up with an old young white guy.  instead, they got Turk and Milo.

what else, it's L.A., so i expected to see more half naked people among the group shot.  if you only get lifted when you go outside, i guess that leaves the hackers to save the day again.

a minute and a half to explain the background image on the trailer page?  not much of a surprise there.  should have kept the background more generic for a while.  oddly enough, my first thought was of the plot of Prey, the game.  by the name, i really expected to see a street racing movie with everyone's favorite bald and gruffy guy, riddick.

tbh, the trailer was ok and shows promise, even if they do end up with some generic aspects to the story.  as long as they don't hack the alien mothership with an iPad, i'll be happy with it.  been a while since a good sci fi invasion movie.

FF2 - $6.99
Vanguard Storm - $2.99
Crystal Defenders - $3.99

never did either.  after plowing through zombie ned in the upper 40's and going to level 53 or so in the armory, i kind of lost interest.  that and a big game i was looking forward to was released.  of course, i could never get a group together to take on the crab.s
7727  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mafia II demo for 360 out now on: August 11, 2010, 11:23:54 PM
It was mentioned in one of the videos that the game is set in the winter in the '40s after Vito gets out of the war and then jumps to the '50s at some point in the summer. The devs were sure to point out the difference in the city between the two periods, with more austere details compared to the richer people later on.

As for the cars, I remember the mechanic, but I was referring to the cars in your garage and wether they were unique and therefore could be lost or more like SR where the car would be replaced if you left it or destroyed it.

Gameplay-wise this reminds me a lot of Saboteur. Can the first mafia game be compared to the kind of gameplay as well? I mean, open-world stuff to do, missions to continue the actual story, and stuff to do like collect cars and such?
no, not really.  there were a linear mission order in mafia 1 iirc and you only got the open world experience during the transit portions and in a separate open world game mode which wasn't tied to your character.  it had challenges and some exploration but it wasn't very deep.  more like offering you the chance to revisit the places in the main game and see how the world worked when you weren't in the story.

i hope they did away with that now and give you the freedom to take missions when you want and explore while you don't.  then it could be remeniscent of saboteur i guess, but without the nazi's and the occupation aspects.  if you want, imagine that sean adopts an italian accent and moves overseas after the war, i guess.  biggrin

despite finishing up saboteur, i kind of have the hankering to play through it again.
7729  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: What great tv shows did you miss only to find later? on: August 11, 2010, 08:22:06 PM
farscape and firefly are the big ones for me.  futurama less so as i liked the show but had never seen all of the episodes until i had them on dvd.
then i loved them.

+1 to the marathon approach to tv series.  it makes the story lines more concise when you watch them that way and makes the weekly (or longer) waiting/analyzing/criticizing aspect go away.  the poor episodes sting less when you watch a good one right afterwards.
7730  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Woman freaks out because she cant get nuggets on: August 11, 2010, 08:16:55 PM
if you had we wouldn't see you for quite a while in sc2 or anything.  that woman is in the cell for 2 months iirc and the attendant is on the hook for federal charges and could face years in prison.  i don't think the punishment would fit the crime in that case, but i would not want my 15 minutes to come at the expense of 2 years or more with my wife and kids.  better to be a happy unknown than a famous loser.

but yes, people these days are more prone to flying off the handle.  i think the general state of things in this country has a lot to do with that.  i also know that if it were me on the receiving end of that woman, i would have defended myself with more than just the window.  we all know how hot the coffee is; she would have found out first hand.   icon_twisted

Microsoft have announced that they have big things planned, which IMO after E3 they need, hopefully they wont all be Kinect games -their press conference is 17th August as well(Peter Moley will be doing it again)-12.30pm CET

actually I think they need to knock it out of the park with Kinect after E3.

definitely.  their e3 conference was only marginally better than the konami 99 nights 2 guy thanks to the slim model unveiling.  they need to show everyone not interested in party games why they should bother to be interested in a slightly-cheaper-than-wii peripheral.
7733  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Own MW2? Play XBLA SNK games for free! on: August 11, 2010, 05:08:49 PM
this has to be the weirdest thing i have ever seen.  now that it's a known issue, i expect it will be patched out quickly, but i also expect to hear of other cross-game exploits now that people know it can happen.  old demos might become very popular on the marketplace.
7734  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mafia II demo for 360 out now on: August 11, 2010, 05:06:29 PM
at least from the first mafia, your friends would fire back when you drove, but i don't remember being able to do that myself.  it would be nice if you could at least use the pistol to fire back.

things i noticed in the demo.  the car handling is pretty much as i remember it, which is a good thing as i see it.  made getting those faster cars more enjoyable later on.  i also like that you can store cars.  not sure if it's like saints row where the car respawns after it's lost, but i kind of doubt it as it goes against the realism they have going here.  i also like that aspect of it, like the little bits of environmental interactions you can have while in your house.  the playboy popup was quite a surprise and between that and the regular cursing, make this game fit the M rating.

the graphics were a bit grainy, but i hope that's due to the early build in the demo as it was a bit distracting at first.  of course, the first thing i noticed afterwards was that the mission was set in the 50's, not the 40's as has been shown before.  maybe that's what the first notice referred to.  i would have liked to see the 40's actually, with the snow and all.  the difficulty level was perfect and the combat is nicely balanced.  pistols are great for long range, shotguns dominate the face to face range, and the tommy just kicks ass all around.  pretty much like i remember except for the biggest thing;  they have dropped the ammo per clip aspect of reloading.  now, it's pretty much like every other game and you don't lose the ammo left in the clip.  imo, it's a shame as it was one of the ways the first game was different and it made the decision to reload more important.  they also went with regenerating health, which i am not fond of here either.  i hope they haven't dropped other details from the first like fuel usage and refilling stations and having your gas tank shot causing a leak.

one thing i am hoping for the game is that they send you on a mission to take out an old ex mobster in his front lawn.  would be a nice nod to the first one.  of course, more references would not be a bad thing at all.

the first of the paid DLC's are now available, called legends and killers.

for $10, you get all this:
eight "new" characters from Red Dead Revolver
nine new mp maps
tomahawk throwing weapon

i would hazard a guess and say that this isn't going to be all that popular around these parts.  even if you look at this as a map pack (which makes it single-handedly more of a value than the MW2 map packs) i don't think the buy-in is going to be very large.

which prompts the next question, who here is still playing this one at all?

Well I'm plowing through MGS 2 (just made it to Core 2) and man is it EVER not as good as MGS1! I mean the first game had great dialogue and one liners and a wonderful soundtrack which totally added emotion to different scenes whereas half of the dialogue in MGS2 is Jack's girlfriend nagging him and the conversations that are somewhat decent have no music to help raise the tension.  What in the hell were they thinking when they made this game?  It better get a lot better soon.  It's not a total disappointment but boy so far it sure hasn't lived up to the first game.

Just wait.

It hasn't even begun to suck yet.

This is outrageous!

Spoiler for Hiden:
It doesnt't truly start to suck until you are running around naked as Raiden while holding your junk.

yeah, that whole end game was just screwy.  i actually liked the fights in 2 better then 4 (with the exception of the big "different" fight of 4 in the snowy level.  the villains were more interesting than the mech sisters imo.

I was excited about Kinect when it was Natal.  The E3 showing of 2009 had a lot of promise, but a lot of that was gone by E3 2010.  It's not just one video.  It's a lot of them and impressions and articles and demonstrations.  Nothing has shown that Kinect is what it was supposed to be or that it's even something ready to compete with Wii or Move (Move has had the exact opposite reaction from me 2009:meh  2010:Hey!).

So was I (and I was actually at the Microsoft Conference last year as well). Natal looked freakin' awesome and it had a ton of possibilities. Now...I see it as shovelware Wii crap central.

yup.  they had a year to get good looking and great games working with it and instead they give us year one wii games.  they should have just shut the hell up last year and announced it now.  if this were the lightgun revival, we would have seen the prototype being used in a CoD MW2, then fast forward and we get duck hunt and carnival games.  they wasted the potential of a whole year.  it's their version of "$599!"

despite how poorly this looked due to the guy and his unfamiliarity with the controls, i don't think this is the type of game that sells the product.  it looks about as complex as a genesis game with mario kart attacks tacked on and not something i would be interested in even free.

the initial problem with pressing start is valid though.  if it's not intuitive enough to pick up for someone used to games and motion controls, then how easy is it going to be for the average user who picks one up on a whim?
