lots of people over at CAG claim that tru commonly pulls that trick and holds most (if not all) of the big release week games off the shelf when this sale happens.

We are in line behind two people (who are shopping together) and the first guy buys 3 copies of uncharted.  First the lady said we could only buy one copy.  I overheard that, and told her that was crap, they're still getting their $$$.  So she sales 3 copies to him.  The other guy with him also wanted 3.  Then she tells him that they have first check to see if they have enough preorders.  Fair enough.  Turns out the rest of their stock is for preorders.  So he's hosed as well as I.
shit like that is why i'm glad i ordered online.  not thrilled mind you, as they may still find a way to frak the whole thing up in typical TRU style.

what's worse is this clown will just end up flipping on the two other copies of uncharted, either through ebay or just swapping out later on.

which brings me to my rant.  if you plan on buying 3 games to get different ones later, as i considered, don't be a douche and get three copies of a brand new game that everybody is looking for.

it also gives you an option though.  you could do the same thing next week when all the uncharted binge buyers return them to get borderlands or whatever.

amen brother.

same goes for the spotlight/highlight/ohnobrightlight nonsense.  one tab is enough for this stuff.  same goes with the 'game with ...' stuff.

clean up the damn game marketplace blade.  make 'avatar games' a subset once you get to the browse list.  we don't need it as a full tab while there's the same old 4 games or whatever.

if i'm playing an arcade game/demo/movie/video, whatever, don't auto-launch the game i put in the disc.  auto launch game should only be when you aren't already doing something else.  or at least prompt me or something.

i don't mind points cards btw as every once in a while you can get them on sale.  can't do that with cash, and if you buy something when live puts it on sale, double sale.
7724  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I think I'm going to play PS2 games until November 10th on: October 13, 2009, 09:53:20 PM
i can agree with the originality, definitely. there was an article a while back which asked which games were actually impossible in their current form last gen.  games like gta 4 and halo 3, even the cods all next gen in graphics only, but quite doable on an old platform.  hell, even oblivion and fallout 3 would have been possible in the old gen.  morrowind worked, and much of their engine is based on it (assuming it is, anyways)

i don't even agree with some of their 'true next gen' games, like dead rising.  they put that one due to the large number of enemies on screen.  i remember the earlier dynasty warrior games and say 'what's the difference?'

even games without being a true sequel are hard to quantify as truly next gen.  bioshock and dead rising, for instance, are based on the old system shock model.

it's really seems like the level of original ideas in new games has dropped off recently.  just bits and pieces really, or things which don't stand out like they used to.  take gta4, it did a number of environmental effects which weren't fully fleshed out before, like the way the cars handled and how people and vehicles interacted (dents and people rolling off and hobbling away, persistent blood, what happened when you killed a driver), but it just tends to fade into the background, so you end up with a sense of a game not unlike what we had on ps2.

Un-fucking-believable opening sequence. So cinematic... I don't even need to play the rest of the game to know it's brilliant.

Pete, you want out of your gaming slump, here ya go.

sadly, he doesn't have one, or i would have made the recommendation in that thread.
7726  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I think I'm going to play PS2 games until November 10th on: October 13, 2009, 07:46:50 PM
i have to disagree about the last two years.  there have been a ton of great games this generation, and the last two years (through end of year 09) have had a great share of games.  someone commented in the brutal legend thread that if it was under 95%, he wasn't interested.  i think that's short sighted tbh.  not every game will be perfect, and to limit yourself to only the top tier cuts out a lot of good games with minor flaws.

this year, i've enjoyed the hell out of a bunch of less-than-perfect games, and while i didn't necessarily love them enough to keep them on my shelf for ever, i would recommend them to anyone.

red faction
call of juarez: bib
overlord 2

all of them from the first 6 months, basically.  while not one of these is perfect, they each succeeded in the most important aspect for me.  they were fun.

this is kind of annoying.  got two emails today.  one was that uncharted 2 is on backorder.  grrr. it was showing in stock when i ordered it, and their system is smart enough to know as it both showed OOS for fallout goty and limited me to 2 points cards.  the second one was shipping details on the other game.  they split brutal legend and sent it alone.  i go check my status, it says operation flashpoint is held until today, it's day of release.  apparently tru didn't keep up with release dates very well as that was last week.  and now uncharted 2 is showing in stock.

also, i love how their standard shipping is 7-9 days.  i ship a package to the other side of the country first class, it gets there in 5.

thank god for gamefly, as i still had uncharted 2 in my queue and it's on it's way.  i'll have that before anything from tru shows up.

due to the will of the gaming gods, i am going to end up with two copies, in a way.  i have my bought copy coming eventually, (last note was it was backordered) which is hugely bumming, and then i ended up with gamefly sending me a copy as i put off changing that around in time.  i don't expect to play this until the weekend, but at least it should be here in some form.  looking forward to it.

Eurogamer liked it, although not as much as most.

this part stood out
zip about in a flame-splattered Epona stand-in called The Deuce, a fat-tyred roadster which can be upgraded by Ozzy Osbourne himself as the game progresses, until it's a low-riding white-trash Batmobile, tearing across the landscape with gatling guns, homing rockets and flames shooting out of side-mounted exhausts.

beware, there is a small spoiler on page two regarding the RTS side.  skip ahead if that's an annoyance

now, take for granted that i skimmed the last third of your post, but from what i read, i can completely understand what you are facing as i was in the same boat, employment wise (just not as long).  gaming did take a rather dull sheen right then, and yeah, i felt guilty when i could be looking for a job.  but take this in stride; you are not going to get considerably further in your job search if you treat it like a 12 hour job every day.  you'll burn out on searching and likely end up depressed.  not a good state of mind when you're looking at job listings.  if you haven't got yourself listed with temp agencies, you should look into it.  while IT is a much different beast than geological studies, you'll have someone else with a lot more resources keeping you in mind when a job does surface.

as for gaming, you've got a pretty good list, but if you take out the guilt factor of not finishing every game you buy, you will end up a lot better for it.

Bioshock, Fallout 3, W@W SP, Gears of War 2, GTA IV, The Orange Box Half Life 2, Far Cry 2

out of these, if you haven't played portal, you should.  one, it's not terribly long, maybe a few hours if you take your time.  two, it's a different game than everything else on your list (all shooters, pretty much) and it's also pretty humorous.  i've been in your position before and an enjoyable game like portal would be exactly where i would start on your list.

if you have played it, and regardless of which game you want to start with (really, they are all good) take the time to start one and specifically ignore the others unless you end up completely turned off on it.  give it a good solid commitment of a couple days at least.  knowing that you have a backlog of great games shouldn't be a burden which ends up sapping your will to play any of them.  beyond that, playing half a game now and getting back to it later is also not a bad thing.  i just revisited far cry 2 myself and beat it after at least 6 months of shelf dust on it.  same with saints row 2 and now fallout 3.  nothing wrong about it at all as our tastes change from time to time.  sometimes you want to shoot mutants, sometimes it's nazis and sometimes it's just generic south american mercs.  it's your call who you want to shoot slywink

7747  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: EDGE's 50 Best iPhone/iPod Touch Games List on: October 11, 2009, 05:31:59 AM
my personal best wth flight control is 52, but i don't play it as much as i do harbor master.  for one, since i have bought it, they've added in like 3 new ports, with not just another layout, but different takes. (specific colors to specific ports, mixed color cargo ships, pirate attacks you repel with a cannon, sea monster attacks you tap to defeat).  out of all of the games i have (32 paid, umpteen free during sale) it gets updated the most.

my list so far:

traffic management
1) Harbor master - .99 + Lite
2) Flight Control

Dual stick shooters
1)  Isotope - 1.99 + Lite.  Geo wars graphic style, many ships with various weapons.  lots of upgrades and many missions.  Most played game of all i have
2) Alive4Ever - 1.99 + Lite.  take left 4 dead, make it a top down shooter with upgrades and different objectives.  fun, but imo, it burns out fast.
3) Minigore .99.  great style, but short on options.  very much a basic entry in the genre.

1)  Space Invaders Infinity Gene 4.99.  has the potential for unlimited levels via music mode.  (it generates new levels from your music)  in actuality, these levels aren't all that different, but it's still pretty fun.
2) Dropship - free.  side scrolling gravity based shooter/rescue ship.

Tower Defense
1) Defender Chronicles - Side view tower defense with character levels, weapons and upgrades.  recently upgraded to add more levels in story mode.  note, i cannot seem to pull this one up in the app store.

misc puzzle
Stone Loops of Jurassica. .99 + Lite.   it's a zuma clone with a ton of levels in two modes.  great value

Ynth 1.99 + Lite.  - unique take on a block puzzle with you as a lady bug trying to cross a pit of quicksand in various chaped blocks.
Radial 50 1.99 + Lite.  360 degree break-in.

i haven't tried it yet, but seeing as it's free, it deserves a plug here for everybody.  car jack streets is a top down gta clone and looks pretty cool, very reminiscent of the first two gta's

7749  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What was the last good game manual? on: October 11, 2009, 04:37:05 AM
the manual for red baron was so in depth that i actually used it as the starting point for a history class report on wwi.  it had huge bits of interesting trivia in it.

recently, i would have a hard time thinking of any actual manual that wasn't just a 'EA special' (8 pages with 5 of them dedicated to credits and warnings)

ARMA 2 wasn't too bad, but it would have been considered light by old standards.

not sure which one i'm thinking of, but one of the squad shooters (rainbow 6) had a lot of useful stuff on room clearing procedures that you wouldn't expect to get in a game.

no copies of crysis at either store i have checked.  one copy of lotr: moria and two copies of coh: tales of valor (had it, but changed my mind at the last moment) and a copy of both endwar and hawx.  not a whole lot on the 360 worth mentioning, mostly terminator salvation and gi joe, both 24.

yeah, you didn't miss a thing with cod3.  treyarch's initial foray into a full game fell on it's ass, which makes it pretty surprising considering how much better cod w@w was.

what gets me about the delay is this, it's supposedly due to piracy issues, as they are probably trying to make it that much harder for them to play it, but in the end, all it does it delay the start of cracking season by two weeks as you know they'll get it eventually.  so, why bother making it much harder than usual if all it does it delay them by a week?
7759  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: If you thought your GOD prices were silly on: October 06, 2009, 05:22:11 PM
this would be troublesome for the resell market if all you had to do was buy the game, download it digitally, then sell off your physical copy.  i'm not sure the game companies would be ok with that as it would remove one of the biggest barriers from the resale market.  hell, if that was the case with everything so far, my game shelf would be about half of what it is now and anything i ever anticipated playing would be installed already.  and you would have to figure out some way to force uninstallation, but i don't see how.  it's like a pc game with no drm; once it's installed, you can't enforce the disc in the drive if you never designed it that way from the beginning.  it's the same way with the current 360's method of downloading to the hd.  their copy protection is the disc.  perhaps randomly wanting to 'insert disk' to play when using the digital copy would do it, but then it also negates the backup solution.

this is slightly different than the current blu ray + digital copy as the digital copy isn't nearly as high quality as the disc (obviously) but with a game, it would be 1:1.

now, if digital copies were priced comparably and the console titles went on sale as the pc market often does, then at least there would be some parity between the prices.  xbla and psn have at least taken this step on occasion and both reduced prices permanently or during their deal of the week.  but afaik, neither have taken this into account for most of their full retail games (sole exception being warhawk)

kotaku did a quick check of the top 10 psp games, comparing best 'like new' copy against the psn price and in all cases except one, it was much cheaper to get the physical copy, and that's only due to the one being a limited print niche game (disgaea) where price was affected by market commodities and demand.  i would believe that this is the case for any download vs physical copy comparison.  download is higher, usually due to the seller's perceived notion of 'convenience', at least on console anyways (sale prices notwithstanding).

i grabbed the latest patch after i bought it and never had any crashes or anything.  mostly, it just took some tweaking to get a playable fps without making it look like opflash 1.  my biggest problem though was due to a failing wireless keyboard.
