They've been losing ground to the unreal engine for years in any case. Quite a contrast from post doom 3 and seeing a lot of games built using engine 4.

Goddamit, the demo just cost me $50.  Oh well, at least I don't have to dig out my Mafia 1 discs.  Because I'm totally replaying that one before the new one.

if you buy it on steam, you won't have to.  they throw in the first one as a freebie for preordering.

I didn't catch the Steampunk stuff that people have been mentioning, any examples from the trailer?

It's kind of the whole thing. Airships and brass and a Victorian sensibility with futuristic objects.

Yes, but were there goggles?  You can't have steampunk without goggles.

Caine's got 'em.
not any more, they don't do anything.

1:15pm now, catching the 3:30pm show.  Should have impressions upon return.  If you mean official as in online review sites, you can read the mixed reception here.

I think impressions depend entirely on initial expectations.  I'm expecting a guilty-pleasure 80's action flick with updated technology, great humor, fun action, and tons of explosions.  And it sounds like that is exactly what we'll get.

better than i expected amongst critical reviewers.  eh, not like it matters for a popcorn flick anyways and enough people are liking it for what it is and not what it could have been.

7727  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mafia II on: August 13, 2010, 08:30:07 PM
10 hours for the main missions perhaps?  i know i spent more than that on the first, but no idea how much exactly.

i'd wait until i see people finishing this up within 10 hours if i were concerned, but i really think this is one of those games you play without rushing through.  hopefully, there are compelling reasons to do so outside of collecting cars and hunting for magazines as the environment looks amazing and it would suck if they only put the life into the game during scripted sections.

isn't that more or less how call of pripyat was made?  open world exploration with lots of different ai interactions?  throw in some vehicles and co-op and that's pretty much what i remember being hyped for all those years back.
7729  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Irrational: and the new game is..... Bioshock: Infinite on: August 13, 2010, 08:25:24 PM
i think the biggest generator of "meh" is this is what Irrational considers "new IP".  if IW had announced pulled the same thing with modern warfare, people would have had a similar reaction too.  no doubt BI will be a great game and could very be strong enough to distance itself from the first two, but it's hard to get excited when we all imagine what they could do with really new IP.

Darkstar One for a bit as it's a good space shooter, even though it's imperfect.
Starcraft 2 for sure.

a $3 discount to use a competing product?  why in the world would comcast do such a thing when they are basically offering on-demand stuff for movies already?  might be worth it for the tv shows though as on-demand is pretty hit or miss for series and no use at all if you don't subscribe to the premium channels.

still, with netflix, i would much rather use that with the 360 over mailed discs anyway.

it's set in 1912 so about 40 years before rapture is built.  one of the characters you see a glimpse of looks like ryan as well, but no confirmation if it is.  it would also make him much older in bioshock than he looks.

Epic apparently have some 'bulletstorm sized' announcement to make,CVG seem to think its an entirely new game

CVG mention that it could be a massive new game announcement after this Twitter announcement

'Bulletstorm sized unveil coming to Games-Com - I'd tell you to hold onto your hats, but that won't matter when your HEAD EXPLODES biggrin'

to me it seems that it would be more to do with Bulletstorm itself, but i guess they(CVG)could be right

how about Rage on the iphone?  60fps and high detail levels.  looks as good as anything on last gen consoles, but imo, as good as some stuff this gen.  texture work is great.

from the demo preview it sounds like the civvies are normal until something changes them, then they go all children of the corn on you.  i hope there is some interaction though as it really gets old fighting by yourself all the time.  it would be great to have some locals in support and some kind of raging war instead of all-on-one.

7749  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Skyline trailer on: August 12, 2010, 06:12:11 PM
let's see, where to start?  they mention stephen hawking a few times.  two generic cops stare up at the sky; i expected to see will smith again, except this time he's a fighter pilot MIB cop who fights robots aliens and this time he's teamed up with an old young white guy.  instead, they got Turk and Milo.

what else, it's L.A., so i expected to see more half naked people among the group shot.  if you only get lifted when you go outside, i guess that leaves the hackers to save the day again.

a minute and a half to explain the background image on the trailer page?  not much of a surprise there.  should have kept the background more generic for a while.  oddly enough, my first thought was of the plot of Prey, the game.  by the name, i really expected to see a street racing movie with everyone's favorite bald and gruffy guy, riddick.

tbh, the trailer was ok and shows promise, even if they do end up with some generic aspects to the story.  as long as they don't hack the alien mothership with an iPad, i'll be happy with it.  been a while since a good sci fi invasion movie.

7754  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mafia II demo for 360 out now on: August 11, 2010, 11:23:54 PM
It was mentioned in one of the videos that the game is set in the winter in the '40s after Vito gets out of the war and then jumps to the '50s at some point in the summer. The devs were sure to point out the difference in the city between the two periods, with more austere details compared to the richer people later on.

As for the cars, I remember the mechanic, but I was referring to the cars in your garage and wether they were unique and therefore could be lost or more like SR where the car would be replaced if you left it or destroyed it.

Gameplay-wise this reminds me a lot of Saboteur. Can the first mafia game be compared to the kind of gameplay as well? I mean, open-world stuff to do, missions to continue the actual story, and stuff to do like collect cars and such?
no, not really.  there were a linear mission order in mafia 1 iirc and you only got the open world experience during the transit portions and in a separate open world game mode which wasn't tied to your character.  it had challenges and some exploration but it wasn't very deep.  more like offering you the chance to revisit the places in the main game and see how the world worked when you weren't in the story.

i hope they did away with that now and give you the freedom to take missions when you want and explore while you don't.  then it could be remeniscent of saboteur i guess, but without the nazi's and the occupation aspects.  if you want, imagine that sean adopts an italian accent and moves overseas after the war, i guess.  biggrin

despite finishing up saboteur, i kind of have the hankering to play through it again.

farscape and firefly are the big ones for me.  futurama less so as i liked the show but had never seen all of the episodes until i had them on dvd.
then i loved them.

+1 to the marathon approach to tv series.  it makes the story lines more concise when you watch them that way and makes the weekly (or longer) waiting/analyzing/criticizing aspect go away.  the poor episodes sting less when you watch a good one right afterwards.
7757  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Woman freaks out because she cant get nuggets on: August 11, 2010, 08:16:55 PM
if you had we wouldn't see you for quite a while in sc2 or anything.  that woman is in the cell for 2 months iirc and the attendant is on the hook for federal charges and could face years in prison.  i don't think the punishment would fit the crime in that case, but i would not want my 15 minutes to come at the expense of 2 years or more with my wife and kids.  better to be a happy unknown than a famous loser.

but yes, people these days are more prone to flying off the handle.  i think the general state of things in this country has a lot to do with that.  i also know that if it were me on the receiving end of that woman, i would have defended myself with more than just the window.  we all know how hot the coffee is; she would have found out first hand.   icon_twisted

actually I think they need to knock it out of the park with Kinect after E3.

definitely.  their e3 conference was only marginally better than the konami 99 nights 2 guy thanks to the slim model unveiling.  they need to show everyone not interested in party games why they should bother to be interested in a slightly-cheaper-than-wii peripheral.
