huw, your surname has never been more fitting than it is with that picture.

yeah, she doesn't rank near the bottom of the hot-or-not scale, but her actions put her firmly in the look, but don't touch category.

besides, she has poo on her.

this might actually get me interested to play again.

they are going after the hardcore cheaters.  no more level 50 fully prestiged players with not other achievements to their name riding around and F'ing with you in free roam.

took you guys long enough.

capture?  You mean for torture right?  I'm sure timesplitters fans would rather have a sequel.

Resistance 3 was also announced, but their site is getting hammered and I haven't been able to see if there is a trailer.

yeah, it's pretty well smashed atm.  as long as R&C has the same trappings and doesn't try to make it into an arena combat game like the last ps2 game, i'll probably pick it up.

Sounds a bit silly yes, but then again, had it had some unique name of its own, we might all have loved the idea ;-)

Do you love the idea?  It's not really grabbing me.  Too early to write it off, though.

I've been burned by the crappy forced license game too many times.

hehe no, sorry, I don't LOVE the idea, but it seems like a fun small game to play with friends. What I meant was, appealing to fans of the Red Faction games like this isnt helping anyone. Fans will scoff, people who dont know Red Faction will probably wonder what the heck it is and play something else shiny.

agreed.  diluting the brand is rarely a good thing.

plugging along with DS1 even though it's polish is worn off and the dull luster is now evident.  got a little time with sc2 and did some of the cooler missions (hello ghosts!)

again, if they hadn't used the term "new IP", then people wouldn't be having this reaction.  but when you hear that and know what irrational is capable of creating, you get excited because the potential for something completely different and awesome, made with the talent they have shown they possess, is bigger than "another bioshock", no matter how they changed the formula.  we still like the game itself and i look forward to it just as much as any other big name developer's new project, but that desire for something new remains.

Everything you said in this paragraph is reasonable and I won't argue against it.  I definitely agree that Irrational shouldn't have marketed it as "new IP".

But the only other thing I'll say is why would you consider "something new" as definitely better?

i'll grant you that.  "something new" has a long history of falling down on its face.  but the possibilities for a new ip being a great game are very good from irrational.  tbh, i think the 2k overlords had as much to do with directing this project as the lead designers.  this is now a proven franchise and it's a safer bet for them.

7744  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Irrational: and the new game is..... Bioshock: Infinite on: August 14, 2010, 10:31:02 PM
how about we just agree that it's not entirely new?  it shares enough of the gameplay elements of bioshock that it is very hard to say that this is new IP.

to me, it sounds like it plays like bioshock with the addition of a helper.  you have different powers here, but you still gain them in a similar fashion (the preview even calls them plasmids fwiw), use them against crazies and hulking contraptions (big daddies and sisters and the mechanical man shown in the trailer), and fight in a decaying world built by man's ambition and torn apart by man's ambition.

hell, it's so similar to bioshock (and system shock when you think about it) that it's like id and the action-only fps:  it's their game formula.

again, if they hadn't used the term "new IP", then people wouldn't be having this reaction.  but when you hear that and know what irrational is capable of creating, you get excited because the potential for something completely different and awesome, made with the talent they have shown they possess, is bigger than "another bioshock", no matter how they changed the formula.  we still like the game itself and i look forward to it just as much as any other big name developer's new project, but that desire for something new remains.

Two questions:  can you copy the saves using the USB connector they sold to transfer them to the ps3 and how do the graphics compare to the ps3 upscaling?  I am kind of curious to try this with some of my backlog.
7746  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: RAGE, the video game. on: August 14, 2010, 07:57:37 PM
They've been losing ground to the unreal engine for years in any case. Quite a contrast from post doom 3 and seeing a lot of games built using engine 4.

Yes, but were there goggles?  You can't have steampunk without goggles.

1:15pm now, catching the 3:30pm show.  Should have impressions upon return.  If you mean official as in online review sites, you can read the mixed reception here.

I think impressions depend entirely on initial expectations.  I'm expecting a guilty-pleasure 80's action flick with updated technology, great humor, fun action, and tons of explosions.  And it sounds like that is exactly what we'll get.

better than i expected amongst critical reviewers.  eh, not like it matters for a popcorn flick anyways and enough people are liking it for what it is and not what it could have been.

10 hours for the main missions perhaps?  i know i spent more than that on the first, but no idea how much exactly.

i'd wait until i see people finishing this up within 10 hours if i were concerned, but i really think this is one of those games you play without rushing through.  hopefully, there are compelling reasons to do so outside of collecting cars and hunting for magazines as the environment looks amazing and it would suck if they only put the life into the game during scripted sections.

isn't that more or less how call of pripyat was made?  open world exploration with lots of different ai interactions?  throw in some vehicles and co-op and that's pretty much what i remember being hyped for all those years back.
7754  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Irrational: and the new game is..... Bioshock: Infinite on: August 13, 2010, 08:25:24 PM
i think the biggest generator of "meh" is this is what Irrational considers "new IP".  if IW had announced pulled the same thing with modern warfare, people would have had a similar reaction too.  no doubt BI will be a great game and could very be strong enough to distance itself from the first two, but it's hard to get excited when we all imagine what they could do with really new IP.
