if you do feel like diving back in with gta's world after, i can recommend tLatD.  it was a great expansion and in many ways, i liked it more than niko's storyline.

never played the second one due to how they mangled the disc vs. dlc content, but i probably will break down and get it eventually.

of course, with red dead being a similar game in many ways, i may not go with another sandbox game so quickly.

word of advice with red faction.  hit and run attacks are easy to pull off and are very much in your favor early on when the enemy is better armed and entrenched.  do the extra stuff while you go as you get more salvage from it, and some tasks disappear once you free a section until the end of the game.  don't worry over dying as you can make up the loss of morale easily enough.

and lastly, never underestimate the power of a good sturdy vehicle.

really hoping this is good as i love games with destructible environments.  criterion is an odd choice for a fps, but with what they've done with burnout, you know they can make destruction look great.

7724  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Playlist - 06/5/10 - Thanks MO! on: June 04, 2010, 04:32:50 PM
finish up red dead sp and as much of the extra stuff as i can.  i finally picked up picross 3d and have to play in lieu of all the iphone games for distractions.

if i burn out on red (first pangs of weariness after 35-ish hours straight), i may restart bioshock 2 or get started with opflash 2 on the 360.  (brutal hard, but it seems to have potential for me).  i still have nier to get to on my backlog though, and that's glaring at me whenever i open the 360's drive.

pete, you can't go wrong with red faction.  that game never ceases to draw me back in for more.  unadulterated destruction has never been better.

i also need to see if split second is worth keeping around.  had it since release week and haven't loaded it up yet.
7725  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: It's the beginning of June. What's your GOTY? on: June 04, 2010, 04:27:00 PM
it's a tough call between me2 and rdr.  both did what they did amazingly well and both looked and played pretty much perfect.  me2 had a better plot, but rdr has had a better mix of missions to go along with it.  me2 had better set piece battles (barring the end boss) but just barely.

actual gameplay was better in rdr though, especially in light of everything culled from me1.

i only dabbled a little with bioshock 2, but all of the nods here mean it will be next on my list.

heavy rain lost me once it decided to kill off one of the main characters by not responding to controls.   no matter how much i tried, i could never get a different ending and just turned it off.  i can accept losing a character to my mistake, but not due to the game saying 'press left' and then not doing anything once i did.
7726  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PS3]Deus Ex: Human Revolution on: June 04, 2010, 04:15:00 PM
he's more like the first gen augments, like anna and gunther.  only set 27 years before DE1, so it's entirely possible that they will end up showing us the beginnings of the whold conspiracy and i hope they reference those two somehow.

a few things from the trailer.  one, i liked it quite a bit.  the details they showed of your mech enhancements and overall tech, the first scene imagery, the dystopian future and the clash between civilians and police.  the music was damn nice and the trailer was very well done.  his words about choice allude to them including some form of DE1's freedoms and could give us more than one ending.  i certainly hope so.  i also hope they give us at least the choice of upgrades.  i saw several different paths they could take and it would be disappointing if they just made this a wider corridor shooter with doled up upgrades.

this makes me pretty happy that square is behind this now.  they do know how to put out a trailer.  consider my interest piqued and unless they completely botch the underlying game, i can live without the ideal sequel we all hope for.

of course, we all know that within 20 years, detroit will be nothing more than a ghost town anyways, so it's odd to see so much high tech there.  of course, that means a omni-corp style takeover.

Things can happen and all that, but it makes me doubtful that the unannounced stuff that I'm looking forward to on those "leak" (notably some sort of news on HL2: Episode 3) is legitimate.

Valve did promise a surprise other than Portal 2, and it better not be Left 4 Dead 3.

The only ones I ever had were for wc1 and 2. The big one was kind of cool; it covered all of 1 plus the expansions and was written almost auto-biographical from the main characters perspective. Author even named him something so he could use a name. That was before blue-hair became Blair.

Friend had wc4 guide, but I don't think he held on to them.

Sorry you had to play with CeeKay. On behalf of GT, we apologize.

The character.  Not the actress, though.  Estelle Getty was nowhere near old enough to be anyone's mom on that show.

Betty White and Bea Arthur were both older (White is [and was] the oldest).

i figured that's what you meant after i posted it.  always knew that the oldest character was played by the younger actress.  one of the shows' biggest quirks.

Mat Latos and Matt Cain have both been within an out or two of perfection in the last few weeks, as well. I guess pitching is back.

So who's going to throw the next one? Big Time Timmy Jim? Johan? Lee? Jimenez? Somebody no one has ever heard of, fifteen years from now?

i could only hope for lee, but considering how badly the M's have played, he could still end up with a loss after 9 hitless innings.

not sure whether griffey leaving is good or bad.  he won't be there to drag down the average, but he won't be there for team leadership either.   icon_confused

That and they no longer have someone to lead ingame nap time either so they wont be as well rested.   Tongue

Never bother with any of them, but I do appreciate the intent of some of them like ExHM and tbl. Not sure how much good it does long term though and I had heard about the plight of many of those new mansion owners after the show ends.  Seems too shirt sighted IMO. It would be like giving a homeless man a new car. He can't pay the sales tax and can't buy gas after the tank runs out, but man what a ride!

you do get better scores for playing it stealthy though, but unless you are going for some of the crazier rankings/trophies, you can gun through and do just fine.  afaik, stealth doesn't change the outcome any and you still get the same crazy boss fights.

 thumbsup for the graphics engine.
thumbsdown to the dumbing down.  i want those rpg aspects.  it's part of what made the first game so fun and not just another fps.  if it hadn't done that, i really doubt it would be as revered as it is now.  take out the non combat parts, the rpg parts, and the freedom of choice (who knew going in that you could save/kill certain people?) and it's just a damn shooter.

hopeful, but i'm afraid we'll look at yet another sequel and reminisce about how good the last one was, despite how much we disliked the previous game in the series (splinter cell)

it was pretty similar, but yes,  the flight controls were quite different.  i loved the pc version up until the infamous save game bug hit and i lost half of my progress.  good thing this was back in the returnable pc game days as it went back the next day.

only played a little of the console version and it's not bad on the eyes.

definitely in with the trial game.  have to see how fun it is before i go out to get more space-bucks though.

his last comment makes what i had heard of the aliens rpg especially jarring;  it was said that that game was almost shippable, certainly demo ready.  for them to go from something supposedly close to completion and end up with a final product unfit to be called beta is a sign we should be worried about obsidian after FO:V.  it also makes me question whether i will wait for reviews.

Still, SCEA Europe often gets things wrong in other areas, kinda weird that they're getting it so right with the Go.

hell, with 10 games, it practically pays for itself. i'd be interested myself if the right 10 were offered.

sony usa can go suck off a pig.  this thing is all but dead in the US and they can't even offer a deal to get it moving.

any way to import one?

yeah, but then we didn't have the strong negative reaction to those movies either.  i thought that the animation and voice casting was pretty good and it had enough funny parts for both kids and adults.  i do think it's better than both of those movies you listed though, and while it's no pixar movie, it's still pretty good.  i enjoyed it more than the last ice age for example, and certainly more than the last few disney offerings.
