looks good, but i would love to see more variety in the zombies.  there's a screenshot posted where the same two zombies are repeated 4 times.  kind of takes you out of the game a bit when you notice it.  they even have the exact same pose.

i'll give the demo a try and see how it plays.

really though, it will be interesting to see if they can come up with a story not too similar to the other movies.

maybe they can make the aliens appear to be misunderstood, that where they came from biting you in the face and impregnating you is actually the equivalent of saying  'hey, how are you doing?  how's the wife and kids?'.

play this in your head with the family guy bit.

i think i am at 2-5 or so.  yeah, some of the levels are wicked hard while others i pass on the first attempt.  still no closer to target times though.  those are going to be madness.

i like the achievement you get for blowing up a lot in a level.

anybody unlock anything other than the first gamerpic?  i wonder how much stuff you get from this one.
7327  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Alien the Prequel on: August 01, 2009, 05:23:00 PM
if they make it a different take on the whole alien one aspect where a research ship finds the space hulk and then has their own survival/destruction story ala alien with the ending being crashlanding the hulk onto the planet, then it could be good, if a bit trite.

or they could rehash alien 4 with a research ship working on the alien as a weapon and stupidly let it loose.

really though, it will be interesting to see if they can come up with a story not too similar to the other movies.

i'd actually be happier buying it from you directly.  you get the money up front and get a larger share of the gain.  are you still in the city you so carefully destroy, or did you get uprooted to somewhere safer?

yup.  and not only that, it's going to be getting art by dave gibbons.  name not familiar?  he's the artist who penned Watchmen, among many others.

linky

out first on apple's platforms, then 'other handhelds'.  perhaps an xbla/psn release is on order too.  this could be pretty damn cool.

I've heard Men of War is crazy challenging/difficult.  True?

I didn't think it was crazy challenging, but it is challenging at times.  the same could be said for soldiers.  you just need to reload a save game and try a new tactic when you get stumped.

i picked this up during the sale and played a bit.  it definitely looks and feels like s:HoWW2 and that's a great thing in my book.  the difficulty can be quite high if you have never tried one though.  it helps to save before any major action in case you end up getting wiped out.  the first mission has a few spots where you can also do insanely well against larger forces if you play your cards right.

at one point, i had two MG'ers in a well situated house facing out and loaded down with ammo.  they were supported by the other riflemen and smg's arrayed nearby and for covering fire.  while i took the tank up in manual control (god, that is fun btw) and cleared out the campers, they held their own admirably.  i didn't lose a man and when i rolled up with the tank, they had swapped to their backup weapons.  the pile of bodies all around them was huge.

in comparison, on a previous attempt, i let their armored car do too much damage and the whole team was wiped out.

if you haven't tried it, space invaders infinity gene is pretty damn cool.  play levels created from your music tracks.  somewhat expensive compared to most iphone games these days, but well worth it and still a great deal.

also on sale for now
radial 50  - breakout within a circle. pretty fun
kids vs zombies - free the last time i checked and not a bad game to boot.
spore origins, also for a buck, and if you haven't got it, pretty fun for a while.
star hogs.  bought, dl'ed and haven't played much.  worms-style tank game with a campaign and upgrades, plus mp.

mafia 2

pretty sure the dev has nothing to do with stalker directly, maybe the pub does, at least as a euro distributor.

stalker was by deep silver and gsc gameworld.

beyond that, it doesn't really have much in common with stalker outside of the character models for the zed heads.  it's a corridor shooter with discrete levels and some semblance of enemy ai.

oh well.  i was worried they would dilute themselves too much with this and the next stalker game.

stoneloops is .99 for a while.  well worth the price, even though i feel a bit burned by getting it a few days earlier at 3 bucks.  zuma on the iphone, and not a hobbled app either.  7 levels, 2 different gameplay modes it controls pretty damn well.

7345  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: [Steam] Weekend Deal(s) Velvet Assasin, Men of War, X3 Terran Conflict on: July 25, 2009, 05:12:37 PM
terran conflict actually added a bunch of stuff to spruce up the campaign side of the game, iirc.
Quote
X: Terran Conflict is a brand new, stand-alone game set in the universe of X. It is the culmination of the X trilogy, with a grand finale that takes us all the way back to Earth's own solar system. Gamers can take on the roles of different characters in the X universe, or of a Terran military pilot, and experience a multitude of stories in the largest X universe ever featured - for X: Terran Conflict will offer more missions than any other X game before. Meanwhile, X: Terran Conflict will pose questions such as: How has Earth changed in all these years? And how will relations between Earth and its counterparts in the X universe develop?

it also has the same galaxy spanning openness as the previous games, so you can get empire building as well.  i played 2 and 3, but not 3:tc, so it's tempting to get this one just for the sp stuff.

you get to pick different starting roles as well, so you aren't just set loose with no direction.  very much a targeted subset of space sims, but it does what it does very well.

i'll have to try slacker for music.  i swear i only hear the same artists and songs in a very small loop.  it's as if i only have 5 cd's worth of music to listen to at a time.  to make it worse, the last.fm app doesn't work for me.  can't log in with the damn thing at all.  possibly a firewall/permissions issue but i need to check it outside of work on a clear wi fi connection.

last week it kept throwing in songs which had no place in the genre, like a 70's soft rock song in a hard rock channel.
7350  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 'Splosion Man 'splodes today! on: July 23, 2009, 04:16:03 PM
the difficulty ramps up a bit after the first 5 or so.  i think i spent a good 10 minutes on 1-6 alone.  (one part where you fall into a pit to trigger a switch, then have to chain bomb jumps up to a platform while spike walls close in got me several times.)
7351  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Monkey Islan on XBLA - Anyone got it? on: July 23, 2009, 04:14:20 PM
my only complaint is that the huge size of the download gives you hope you'll get a decent amount of game in the trial, but it barely gets started before you hit the nag screen.  it's more for those familiar with the game to see how the conversion turned out, not so great for those new to the game.  you have basically three conversations and see 2 areas.  i think it was under 10 minutes, and that's listening to the voices rather than skipping through.

i played through most of it the first day it came out and then co-op'ed through with 3 others in legendary the next two nights after i beat it.  great fun and more than worthwhile to get for co-op.  mp is great fun and you could spend a whole year playing it.

Grabbing this later today. I really enjoyed The Maw and this looks brilliant compared to that.

How are the controls? Is the jumping and platforming easy enough for a 7 year-old to play or is it heavy on the coordination?

not too bad, as long as he/she has got the notion to double jump and the like.  there seems to be a lot of that going on.
controls are tight and simple, from what i can tell.  run and bomb.  bomb acts like a jump, so you use it to bounce from wall to wall to get over obstacles.

Played through the first 5 levels, so far the game screams originality and creativity. The level design is clever and fun, 'Splosion Man himself is hilarious!

i like the animation when he runs.  it's like a kid running in the park after a long winter.  the gibberish they all speak adds to the game's charm.  glad they went that route instead of english.  gives them more reason to for good body language as a communication method.
7354  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Do you still get excited for games by id? on: July 22, 2009, 04:45:13 PM
i played doom 3 for a bit until the repetitious mechanics of the gameplay became obvious and i tired of plodding through.  i do appreciate what the engine did like the keypad interaction and such and obviously, it was a very nice looking shooter.  in the end, i feel like a lot of us probably do when playing an id game;  i can't wait to see what X does with this engine.
7355  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 'Splosion Man 'splodes today! on: July 22, 2009, 04:40:20 PM
downloaded this morning, played the first mission, and then bought it to play the next few.  i would have played more, but that whole 'work' thing got in the way.

so far, it's pretty interesting.  a combination speed run, puzzling platformer, and hunt for the secret item (nice nod btw).  the graphics are sharp and remind me of maw, portal, and team fortress 2, ie cartoony and bright with exaggerated proportions.

it's not been too hard, but with 3 of 50 single player missions done, i'm not expecting them to be.  they are not overly long either, and the par times for each have been in the 90 second mark.  i think the best i have been able to do so far is over 3, but that's also skipping the secret item.

i really liked the maw, even though it was fairly short, and still use the premium theme unlocked at completion.  i plan on changing it once i beat splosion man as i think it's a pretty cool unlock.  this also has avatar stuff, so i'm interested to see what that is.

i don't thinks it's stupid to have a buy-back policy at all. in fact, it makes both sides happy with the dd model.  i for one can recoup some of the cost of buying a game, either from finishing it and having no further interest, or from buying something i end up regretting.  regret due to satisfaction, not remorse, btw.  buyers' remorse only happens when the damn game drops in price the month after i get it, but it's an acceptable risk imo.  'buy-back' also gets the used market out from under the stigma of "taking away from the devs" as it removes that option from the buyer.  it's a great move and i will support it.

it's not about 'assuaging fears' as you put it, it's about giving us the same options we have with physical media.

and regarding cost, if same price = more money going back to the devs instead of to the stores, then i'm all for it too.
