of course, i have over 60 hours in fo3 without finishing up the main story line or the last 3 dlc, so even though there's more game left, i feel like i got my money's worth.

I give Gothic a slight edge over Nehrim, just because the NPC's in Gothic have better personality. However, Nehrim is very, very good. Lot's of people didn't like G3 very much. While I found having to clear out the cities kind of repetitive 2/3 of the way through the game, it's still a Gothic game and enjoyable. I somehow avoided the bugs that plagued many people.

and with the last big community patch, G3 should be pretty good and stable now.

i have it and risen but haven't had the time to devote much to either; only about 3 hours or so in on either one.

beat this tonight.  pretty decent story and i enjoyed the character development.  decently long game too and the combat gets a bit better one you get the other abilities.  they are all very useful too as you face much stronger enemies towards the end.  trying to grab some of the leftover low hanging achievements before i send it back on monday.

the ending is rather odd and not at all what i was expecting.
7330  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Halo: Reach Impressions thread on: October 15, 2010, 04:19:45 AM
afaik, that's the only place you can easily get it and not long after the checkpoint.  like i said, i spent an hour trying for it and inevetably, i would miss as the bastard would move at the last second, the game would register it as a regular melee instead of an assassination (i actually lived through this twice, once where i one-shotted him) and a handful where i go the assassination but not the achievement.  the game is just too damn finicky when it comes to this one and after dying and cursing it for an hour i just said to hell with it and moved on.

i did finish the last sequence without resorting to hiding though so that makes up for the earlier frustration i had.

the level pack is out on 11-30

$10 for 3 maps supporting all the major types with another 250 points to earn.  not sure what those are yet.

will it be enough to get people back after black ops?  not sure.  i have usually moved on by then but as i still love the hell out of firefight (great for stress relief) i might actually keep this one for a while.

so, final opinion on this one?  i enjoyed the maw and splosion man but i am hearing that much of this one's charm lies in its humor and that's too damn subjective to base $15 bucks on.  it's hard but is it cheap deaths or not?  what's the replay value?

Just finished the SP campaign. Forgettable, janky, unpolished, derivative and plain mediocre. It tries hard, it really does, but it falls flat on it's face. And I don't really have any desire to replay it on hard difficulty ("the way it's supposed to be played, bro") with the hopes that somehow the whole experience will be 10x better. The more I played this game, the more I wanted to go back to play MW1 (and even MW2). Final grade for SP campaign: C. Can't speak to any of the MP as I have no interest in engaging in it.

I like how you can plainly see, as you're playing the game, Danger Close going down a checklist to implement all the requisite elements of a modern warfare shooter. I have no problems with scripted events as a way to increase immersion and control pacing, but the way it's done here (which is poorly) makes what would otherwise be a cool game design choice stick out like a sore thumb.

pretty much agree with this on all counts.  the sp campaign is nothing bad, nothing special.  it's also quite easy on hard and over quickly.  probably around 5 hours by my estimate.  other than wrapping up the random sp achievements, i doubt i'll bother with replaying it on tier 1 mode.

on to mp.

just finished another 2 levels and half of the 4th.  the stealth sections are pretty fun and don't immediately kill you if you botch a stealth kill.  the atv is used, but it's not a run-and-gun like the snowmobile.  used to get through a lot of rough terrain quickly with a number of stops in between.  stealth seems pretty damn easy and i was able to sneak by in areas which any other game would have left you spotted by enemies.  it's odd and not easy to describe but compared to the snow storm in mw2, you can get away with a lot more here.  tbh, the game isn't dark enough to make the stealth sections believable.  at one point, i was "hiding" by an open doorway with a number of lights in the room.  a taliban walked by and pretty much ignored me.  at another point, i walked straight up to his buddy (didn't even need to crouch) to knife him.  pretty bad awareness by the ai if you ask me.  at least it lets you flank them and not be the sole center of attention like cod.  your buddies are pretty effective too and getting ammo from them makes the standard weapons more useful.

i'll have to go back and see the manual; missed prone as an option entirely.  of course, from the stealth sections, it's not needed to progress.

end of the second mission was kind of fun but as it is really hard not to compare this against cod, it pales in comparison.

GI gave this a 7 and pretty much said it was a failed attempt to reboot.  so far, i can't disagree with that in regards to sp.

GI has given this an 8.  basically, silly but fun.  a huge difference between its focus and rb3's (GI gave it 9.25 and praised everything about it.)

where RB3 gives you the definitive path from plastic to electric, GHWoR gives you power-ups, boss battles and character progression.
7340  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Force Unleashed II on: October 13, 2010, 04:12:40 AM
just got GI and they rated it 7.75.

they are labeling it one of 2010's biggest disappointments.

pros:  better, more fluid combat and enhanced force powers.  mind trick is fun as hell.  displays of the Force are bigger than ever.

cons:  the story falls below the bus, peters out on the ending and lacks excitement.  levels are not as varied or as good as the first.  boss fights are by the numbers and the end boss fight is too easy and drags it's feet.

i was in the rental camp by way of money but now am going to stick to it until i see favorable impressions here.
7341  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fallout: New Vegas Announced on: October 13, 2010, 04:04:15 AM

the first port also had the unfortunate trait of including the voice over work for every supported language in one installer, meaning if you bought it online it was a huge ass download.

plus the broken part of the port and overly console-itis.

as much as i liked the first, i will be gameflying the second.  just too damn much this year and some games have to be bumped down to rental.
7343  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Medal of Honor: Modern Warfare on: October 13, 2010, 03:52:25 AM
played the first mission of the single player campaign.  it was pretty dull and basically broke down into a dull series of house sweeps and occasional ambushes.  nothing remotely interesting and they managed to rip off a game mechanic from mw1 in the first mission.  it's the last fight of the mission before you see the cutscene.  the mechanics are decent but not as visceral as mw nor as large in scale as bc2.

that said, i do like a few aspects of it so far.  they added in the ability to lean, somewhat awkwardly, but it's passable in the situations you encounter so far.  looks like you can't go prone though.  playing on hard and wow, after playing Reach on legendary, mw1 on veteran, and [email protected] on hardened, this isn't even close to being as hard as those games so far.  no infinite spawn of aim-botted mini gods jumping out of every window and you don't die from a single round.  until i hit a wall with it, i'll probably play through the whole game this way.

haven't tried mp yet, but that's because all of you were on mw2 instead.  i'll post some impressions once i have enough of a feel to compare it to mw2 and bc2.

ok, the damn chase sequences are annoying.  a dozen attempts to hit every boost pad or you fail the sequence plus they went and added orbs into the section too, just to add extra annoyance.  two of them so far and i am really glad they don't have any more of them.  i am now stuck in a puzzle where i can't proceed according to how the solution is set up.  either i've locked myself out of the right way or the game is buggy as trip isn't responding to the commands i am giving her.

combat is much better once you get your skills upgraded.  damn mechs block a lot of your attacks so having the wide stun is vital.  and focusing on the specials is important.  the staff is good in a pinch and to soften up a squad of them as they run into the fight.
7349  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (10/11) on: October 11, 2010, 07:39:12 AM
afaik, arcania is next week.  not the brightest move going against fo:nv, of course, but that's what gamefly is telling me.

i am on the fence on whether to pick up moh this week.  didn't touch the beta but i know enough that it's similar to bc2 but not a clone.  sp could be good fun and i think i could get decent trade in value for it so the cost is only temporary.

hit a wall in scott pilgrim (last damn boss, wth!?) so i have resorted to farming for money.  back into enslaved and i am working my way through (more of a slog really) and at least i have been able to progress in the story.  almost 2/3rds finished and hope to have it mostly done by the time moh arrives.

didn't touch dr2 and i am not really inclined to go back.  it's my anti-game.  everything i should love but just can't get past the annoyances.

This won't fix your DVD problem, but could be helpful if you find yourself without a drive and need to install:  windows 7 can be installed from USB. As long as you have a 2nd machine to set it up of course. I looked into it a while back when I had a suspect drive. In my case, the connector in the MB went out.

Ugh, just ran through two whole levels without trip's help or ability to upgrade. I am now banking almost 400k in points once they let me use them. Really wish I had buffed up a bit first as the endless stream of mechs became a huge PITA. It might not really be endless, but after the third wave rushed me right after the checkpoint, I decided to just run past into a climbing sequence. It took a bit of luck to get past the groups later on. If it weren't for the masses, the level itself would be very short.

Still, I have been able to get past by most of the mobs. The story just took a darker turn which should be quite interesting to see develop. Only half way through the chapters.
7356  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PS3] Enslaved on: October 10, 2010, 12:57:19 AM
well, i managed to get past that boss i was stuck on after the third try.  it helped knowing exactly what to do and to get in the groove for this type of combat.  still wish the camera was better though.

played through the next 3 chapters pretty quickly and i appreciate them not throwing a hard boss at you every end of level (so far).  i think the backdrop for chapter 5 is pretty awesome.  i have been pooling my points until i see what works.  any tips for picking the best upgrades?  i've buffed health and regen, combat awareness and counter attack.  i should get used to using it as any group of enemies really put up a fight, nevermind the potential for reinforcements.  i am glad you can interrupt that but really wish the timer was longer on hard.  by the time i hear the warning from trip and ID the mech i get enough time for two shots at it, tops.  never been able to hit the mech in time when it's up close, save the time i got the achievement for 1 second to go.

Oh how I would love to see that.

"...get in there, you...big, furry oaf. I don't care what you... SMELL."

Although I would imagine with Walken in the lead, Han Solo would have been a little more menacing and not quite so rogue-ish.
it also would have made the one-liners achingly bad. Any of han's lines in ESB would have just gone flat.

wouldn't a game called 'World of Starcraft' technically be a new IP since it doesn't exist?  kinda along the lines of what Irrational pulled with their 'new ip' being Bioshock Infinite'?

that's what i would expect too.  "it's new because we haven't made a sci fi mmo yet".  actually, i would expect kotick to come out and say something along the lines of "we're calling it a new IP, so if you geeks can't accept this isn't a new IP, then you can go suck it."
