I may have picked this up if it was for 360. I just can't seem to get used to the PS3 controls for FPS games.

i had the same line of thinking, but then i rented fear 2 on the ps3 due to a rrod'ed 360 and i picked them up pretty well.  the learning curve wasn't as big as i thought it was considering how natural i am with the 360 controller.

great price for this one, and imo, one of the best shooters of the generation, once you get past the opening hurdle.

7325  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: FEAR 2 impressions thread on: February 16, 2009, 07:11:17 PM
i did end up playing through about 2/3rds of the game (past the school) and even with the jagged edges, it's pretty fun.  the weapon variety is good and except for the pistol you can be viable with every basic weapon throughout.  you do get a good range of special weapons, but aside from the intended set pieces where you are prompted to use them, i always stick with the smg/assault rifle, shotgun.

one thing i do like a lot is that you aren't always facing enemies who target you.  there's two 'factions' and they will battle it out if you let them.

also, the story details you pick up via log files is great.  it explains much of the why's and are worth hunting for.

i think i can finish this up with another game session, as it doesn't drag on even though each level can be pretty big.

in the end, i give it a 7 or 7.5 as it is very solid, but very much filled with the standards of a corridor shooter so it comes off pretty derivative.

oh come on, for only 49USD! you too can say you are a movie producer.  then it's possible to use that line at parties.  imagine the possibilities!

and you get a chance to share the profits from the film.  that could buy lunch.  for two even.
7327  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Console games that are 100% Japanese quirk on: February 15, 2009, 07:28:13 PM
r.a.d.  a giant mecha fighting game where you control the legs with the L1/L2 and R1/R2, instead of just using the right analog.  the sticks controlled the arms for punching.  on top of that, you also controlled everything from the POV of a small kid who was also in the game world.  it was a godzilla movie come to life.
7328  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Underrated/"hidden gem" PS2 games? on: February 15, 2009, 07:25:00 PM
i'll throw out three mech games:

front mission 4:  while not as solid as fm3 by most fans, it was pretty good and gives you a lot of mech building srpg goodness
ring of red:  another that was pretty much overlooked and never saw huge copies sold, thus ending any chance at a sequel.  alternate history ww2 with mechs and a slice of action to a srpg game.
r.a.d.  : a sure entry in the quirky japanese game thread, this one had you controlling your mech via remote control, complete with a little boy who needed to be protected in game and was your POV.  it was like a godzilla movie come to life.

and two of my favorite rpg's

summoner.  hyped up the A before launch, reviewed poorly against that hype and it's flaws, and most people simply chalked this up to 'crappy launch rpg'.  those of us who gave it time found a good story with some interesting twists, a combat system that got deeper the more you played and a pretty good game over all.
summoner 2:  i was actually surprised this got the funds to be made, but i'm glad it did.  it took much of the lost potential of the first one and improved on it, adding more characters, a larger story and a better combat system.
7329  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: FEAR2 Impressions on: February 15, 2009, 05:23:05 AM
playing the ps3 version and my biggest gripe aside from the 'been there, killed that' feeling is that they didn't bother to code 1080i support into it so my older tv makes it look like an xbox 1 game.
7330  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: New Aliens vs Predator on: February 15, 2009, 05:21:17 AM
review of the sequel don't give it a very good impression, even from a design point of view.

zombies in nam?  wth? bad ai, bad graphics, bad controls.  eurogamer slammed it with a 2.  it has no redeeming qualities, which sounds like a badly managed product all around.  what did they do, let the B team handle this one?  it doesn't sound like it would even benefit from a few months of polish.  it's flawed all around.

don't they have the same people who worked on avp1 any more?  even rogue trooper wasn't all that bad, just generic.  but even generic games can be fun, just look at fear 2.

I'm torn as to whether to buy this or not. I'm hoping that when Watchmen is released on Blu-ray, they re-interleve Tales of the Black Freighter with the main text.

i would buy this.  i also hope that they actually filmed out the original master plan and would splice it back in with a super long director's cut or somesuch.

as it stands, the tale isn't great on it's own and really was only a counter-story to the main one.  as chaz points out, it was better when the panels were inter-leaved with the story as they purposefully drew them similarly.

well that was kind of a wash-out episode.  not much going on and the fill-in-the-blank plot hole approach left me feeling a little let down.  i know why they did it, but it wasn't a good episode, especially coming from last week's.  they needed to explain ellen's existence and importance, but i always dislike the "18 months ago" approach to ret-conning your story.  i think most people who have been critical of the plot holes will not be satisfied with how this episode was done.  hell, i haven't been critical and i wasn't satisfied.

looks like next week should be pretty good though.

not sure what the trick is, but i do remember there being a 'display reset'  switch you used.  someone here had a problem with their hdmi connector flaking out.

not sure, but did you use hdmi?

if it's not easy to hook back up to your machine and then change the display to use component cables (ie, hook up both sets and change in settings) then this should do it:

Quote
With the PS3 in stand by mode Press and hold the power button for 5 secs.. (until you hear the second beep) this cause the PS3 to reset the display properties back to 480i..follow the onscreen instructions to set it back up to 1080i

7343  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The PSP2 and the Return of Sony on: February 13, 2009, 11:01:50 PM
i hacked my psp a while ago and haven't even bothered to upgrade the cfw as so few games in the last two years have even been appealing to me enough to bother.  i still use it as a emu device for genesis games i have in my closet and for playing the psp games i've bought.  my newest game was patapon fwiw.  i'm not big into srpg's and even the clearance copy of ff tactics is still in the shrinkwrap.  really, aside from maybe the star ocean games (which i admit i would probably bail out on after a week's play) and loco 2, i haven't any interest in the psp.

since i dusted the thing off this week, i have used it to control my ps3 to get media streaming working and a quick review of mgs po.  that's it.

now on the ds, i have dq4 to finish, dq5 coming soon, chrono cross and a whole stack of other games which look like fun should i want something new to play.

3rd party games won this generation imo.  the price was the opening shot though and for sony, it drained a lot of the potential out of the system.

7344  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: FEAR 2 impressions thread on: February 13, 2009, 10:45:01 PM
bingo.  it's why i never finished R1 actually.  it got to be a bit distracting and all.

that said, i wonder if they did code 1080i for the 360.  i only rented it on the ps3 as my xbox is still in the shop and i don't expect it back until march.  if anyone can confirm 1080i, i'll send this back and just wait for kz2.

it's especially distracting considering how much i tweaked my pc for fear 1 and how beautiful the game looked back then.  this just looks like a ps2 game at times.

got a little time with it and it does seem a proper sequel to the first one.  hopefully it will open up a bit as the current level really comes off as too similar

my biggest gripe is the graphics.  apparently they didn't bother to code this thing for 1080i screens, so i get to see the game in all of its 480p 'glory'.  after finishing up mgs4 and playing the killzone 2 demo, the graphics are less than impressive in this mode.

otherwise, it looks like fun.

unless companies get going with good free home content, or at least stuff tied to your games, then it should be killed off.  i'm not paying for virtual crap, regardless of it's quality.  i've never bought a theme or a gamerpic, so why would i bother with a banner in a virtual home?

Two  thoughts:

1)  Sony should stay FAR away from anything that is going to potentially cost $500

especially for a portable device, no matter how many cool gadgets they manage to stuff inside.  the ds' popularity proves that games win the war, not fancy everything-in-a-box designs.

Quote
Here's what the next PSP should be: an iPhone with buttons.
The next PSP should be a fantastic point-and-shoot camera and camcorder.
Quote
i neither want nor require a gaming device to have a camera when my phone does this just fine, thankyouverymuch.
The next PSP should be a top-quality GPS unit for both pedestrians and drivers. (Without buying an additional module.)
Quote
this i could use, but again, many phones also do this now, so why bother with it in a gaming device?

The next PSP should have a touchscreen.
Quote
why, just to be like the ds?  imo, outside of the quirky japanese games, the touchscreen is not the end-all, be-all of gaming control.

The next PSP should have accelerometers and a compass.
Quote
not sure why these are useful in a gaming device.  iphone-ish features will not win over against the cost.

The next PSP should come with a great web browser.
Quote
agreed here.  not that the existing browser is bad, but if they could improve it with chrome's speed and firefox's flexiibilty, then i would be happy.

The next PSP should be offered in two flavors: one with a phone inside, one without.
Quote
imo, this the diversion point for sony:  do you remain a solid gaming device or saddle up with a service provider?  risky proposition considering the opposition.  iphone is the leader here and android phones are faltering it seems.  why tie your next gen with another big 'what if'?

The next PSP should be able to download and purchase games over-the-air via 3G or Wi-Fi, saved to copious internal flash memory. (Something the current PSP is finally seeing in part through the PlayStation Network, but perhaps Sony should abandon retail entirely. It's worked for the iPhone, Gamestop and Wal-Mart be damned.)
Quote
agreed, but give users a second method of purchasing and transferring via pc, not just through 3g

The next PSP should be Sony's best mobile gaming device. (Although it need not be much more powerful computationally than the current PSP.)
Quote
it should be more powerful, but not exponentially powerful.  the ps3's architecture proves one thing about that approach:  complexity does not necessarily equal better games.

The next PSP should cost $500—or $200 when subsidized by wireless carrier.
Quote
again, i would rather see a solid gaming device like the psp is now with a better push for 3rd party developers.  marrying this with a phone is not going to be easy to sell.  plus, such a device would have to shrink to be feasible as a phone.  the psp is huge compared to an iphone and even gutting out the umd drive would not shrink it enough to be a comfortable size

Sony needs to go all in. Convergence is a bear. A bear that, when you've just about wrestled it into submission, grows another couple of arms holding pico-projectors and a WiMAX chip. But it's where gadgets are going, like it or not, and while it may take another decade or two for all of the aspects to come into their own (see: the iPhone's horrible but heavily used camera) the opportunity exists for companies to rise to the challenge of making miraculous do-everything magic pocket lumps.

If anyone has the engineering talent to do it, it's Sony.

really, i am not fascinated by the idea of a psp turned into a phone.  why bother when the iphone pretty much fits his description anyways?

here's a +1 to much of what depward said.  better download support, harder to hack, but easier to port your library of ps1 games (or even ps2, now that would be cool) and a 2nd analog.
7350  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: New Aliens vs Predator on: February 12, 2009, 10:54:45 PM
