it will be hard not to get rb2, but to be honest, i don't play it much unless friends come over.  yak 2 may be on the list even though i never played the first one.

how's the quality/quantity of the content?

sucks that one of the biggest lures for getting this thing is broken.  what's been delayed?

7204  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mercenaries 2 impressions thread on: September 05, 2008, 07:21:45 PM
the warts i have seen which mark the game down a notch or two.

camera view not being a chase cam makes some of the boat race missions a pain in the ass, especially the one with the prototype boat and all of the damn mines.  i did one and stopped.  and what the heck, as soon as you finish, the boat disappears out from under you.  thanks for dumping me off in the middle of a warzone in the fracking water,  finger

had one incredibly maddening moment which almost killed it for me.  i have been making a few backup saves "just in case" as i passed notable missions, and for some reason, my autosave ended up with an older timestamp after a string of missions for the pirates.  i didn't know that my save game was the older one until after i did a big mission for the plav and a bunch of other stuff.  so i go back to the pirate base thinking i would take the outposts for them and go after their hvt's.  nope, they never heard of me, so i get to do the damn jet ski race over again.  my autosave from earlier was overwritten by what i had just finished.  i had already done it twice the first time due to getting ganked by a gunboat (a pirate gunboat too?!), but i wasn't interested in going after the next mission target just yet, so i went ahead anyways.  about 3 checkpoints from the end, a damn vz soldier one-shots me with a perfectly aimed rpg out of nowhere.   mad

i have seen the minor issues like an empty floating helicopter which explodes if i try to steal it, cannon fodder allies and wildly inaccurate rpg trajectory (why are my shots so damn likely to fly off at odd angles, but yet a single vz hits me dead on the nose?!)

still, i haven't soured on the game though.  trashing that fortress was awesome.

31 and been playing them since the 2600 days.  moved up to an atari st and eventually a 386 with a whopping 300mb hard drive and 4mb of ram.

missed out on the c64 games but i count as older anyone who played 2600 games when that was all there was.

we spent labor day overnight at camano island and were seriously considering going up north to pick up a few things.  would have been right in the neighborhood when this all went down.  not to mention the F-up this surely did to the drive home.

2) I beat the mechanic driving mission the very first time.  icon_twisted Tongue

same here.  i got very close to timing out a few times, but i was able to make it to the next checkpoint in time.

did a bunch of the plav's missions and royally pissed off the UP doing it.  oh well, i still have their buildings to destroy.  there are a lot of them this time, and they get harder.  i died last night to an alerted building while trying to drop some arty at their doorstep.  it was very satisfying to take them out on the second try though.  artillery fire kicks butt.  hopefully they up it with a heavy barrage option later on.

got all of the recruits too and misha's mission is so damn fun i wish i could replay it again.  that's a great showpiece and would make a killer demo.  after i grabbed the bombs, i circled the small island looking for a good vantage point to see the bunker, but it was well guarded by the fort, so i drove back down to find the jetski i used to get there.  oh look, an enemy heli is patrolling around.  i jumped out, hijacked the chopper and then pulled out a trick from mercs 1 i used to great success:  dropping vehicles on other vehicles to explode them both.  then i saw the abundance of VZ oil tanks lying around.  those make great bombs if you can aim the drop just right.  took out both tanks and the alarm towers and bunkers in the fort.  swapped my heli for a fresh one after the sams got me and layed waste to the bunker with a very satisfying explosion.  the heli didn't just explode mid- air like in the last one, so i was able to jump out and survive.  mercs 1 would have been a mission restart.

very satisfied that i picked this up.  incredibly fun game.  solid 9 now.

sweet.  this could come in handy with the UP's light tanks they have hanging around.

it would have been better if you could call a pick-up with the heli pilot.  that may have made it a bit too easy to stockpile the goodies though.

damn fast.  i would make this my portable browser app over firefox if at all possible.

i like the webapps functionality.

if they can keep the speed and stability while adding in the extensions that make firefox so great, then i just might switch.

lifehacker had a speed test among this, ie and firefox.

results?  not conclusive except in specific cases, but it does seem faster.  biggest advancement comes at a price.  individual process per tab increases total memory usage to give you better stability for the overall browser.

some of the small things i like about the engine...

huge explosions white the screen out and your character covers his/her eyes.
explosions in the water make nice waves which affect anything close enough.
junk in the back of the locals' cars.  soccer balls everywhere!
burning down forests.  contributing to global warming never looked so good.
using the giant fuel tanks to take out nearby buildings.

oh, and for you bullwinkle....

does this game have the same faction mechanic as the first? where you have to balance relations between, what 4 or 5 sides?

so if you want to spend time in factions As field, you have to be careful about doing too many missions for faction B, their mortal enemies?

how many, and does the game have the balancing act?

i did a large chunk of the UP's targets before doing their next few missions and the rebels were fully hostile to me.  not sure how much i could reduce the hate by capping the regime, but it cost a cool 2.7 mil to get them to like me again.  sure, a buttload of moolah in comparison to the missions i was doing, but i had just made 2.2 by doing one of the pilot's challenges, so it wasn't a total loss.

after 4 hours or so, about 20% done, with most of the UPs missions done.  i need to find some new contacts other than them and the rebels, plus get the other recruits.

of that list of issues posted earlier, i found out that most of them are negligible and also about the c4 and air strike methods.  sure, the ai can and has blown themselves up by mistaking the building in between themselves for an imaginary castle, but i can allow artificial stupidity now and again.

blowing stuff is as fun as i expected.  icon_twisted

while this game would have been better served by going before gta 4, it's just as fun as i remember mercs 1.

btw, the note that this game can be too hard for dying at the end of a mission is ironic.  mercs 1 didn't give you regenerating life.  if you were on your deathbed, the best you could hope for was a medevac or a health pack drop, and those were sometimes hard to arrange.  the last mission was a killer for that reason.  regenerating health would have made it a breeze in comparison.

also, money comes easier in this game.  i don't think i had as much only 4 hours in. and with the abundance of oil and airstrikes you can simply find in the world, you don't have to buy as much this time around.  (yet)

8.5 so far.

me, i would rather avoid the hassle and the risk and also because i have been able to get both points cards and live memberships on sale.

That was a single incident, not a policy.  It was resolved quickly.

of course, i know that and am not trying to paint with a wide brush, but when stuff like this can happen, it makes it even harder for me to go that route in light of cheaper cards.

i only have one of the psn games because i would rather not let them have it either, but i'm a little paranoid that way.  chalk it up to a wamu debit card fraud of almost $1000 several years ago and i avoid giving out my cc online whenever possible.

now, back to your regularly scheduled program.  i wish i had remembered to bring my system in so i could download and play it this weekend.

The music is in the top right corner of the article.

7230  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mercenaries 2 impressions thread on: August 29, 2008, 04:53:17 PM
wow mike, those kind of things make me a bit wary too.  there's even things which were much better in mercs 1.  you could place multiple c4 and blow them all up at once. (made some missions much eaiser as you could get far enough away before getting into trouble)  sneaking was actually possible, although i never did much of it, and using smoke for air strikes?  what, did they cut the laser pointer altogether?  if so, that's pretty damn stupid.

combine that with the ai, save wonkiness, disappearing items, and  lack of polish and it kind of leaves a bad shadow over this game.  i really hope this is not the case throughout the game.

there is full coop throughout roscoe.  one of the biggest additions to the game.  i wonder if they did that part right.  not sure about competitive versions or the details around coop though.

don't worry too much pete.  it's still about 2 months away before fo3 and mass effect can be beaten in less time than that, especially if you take a more moderate approach to finishing side quests.  even if you do everything, you still won't hit 120 hours in one playthrough.

it may be some time before i get back to oblivion.  hopefully before fallout 3.
7239  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Alone in the Dark impressions (processing) on: August 28, 2008, 04:33:54 PM
cheapest price is through gamefly for the console versions.  i could have kept the 360 version for ~$23.  it was a hard decision to make sending it back, and if they had sent me the price drop email sooner, i may have kept it then.
7240  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Impressions on: August 27, 2008, 05:02:16 PM
pete, drop the difficulty level down to the minimum.  sure it could be considered cheating, but who the hell cares?  it's your game and playing through the way you are is only pissing you off.  at least then you get through the 8-10 capital A-hole enemies without making every room an epic battle.

i agree though, the gates sucked after a while.
