devoted to nothing but mw2 this weekend, even if the damn network goes 2012 on us.

oh hell yeah i'm in.  i finally got a working connection last night and played for a too short two hours with a bunch of people.  damn, that was fun and it's great to finally be back into the game.  i'll be in later tonight, possibly ~9 pst to whenever the group splits up.  just like old times.

damn, that is seriously cheap for the overlords.  if i hadn't had so damn much to play, not to mention the first one on 360, i'd be seriously tempted

the sequel adds a few new tweaks to the gameplay, so if you like the first, i recommend the second.

Finished it up today.  Don't know what my actual completion time was, but it wasn't much.  i started at around 12.30am last night, played til about 2.45, then started up around 11.30am today, and finished somewhere around 3.30pm, with a few breaks during that time.  I'm hoping I get some mileage out of MP, because the SP was short even by FPS standards.

Spoiler for Hiden:
I totally agree with not really knowing what was going on most of the time.  They were obviously going for a fairly complex spiderweb of intrigue plot, but most of that just got lost.  After the Wolverines mission, things definitely did get better, but still were some annoying parts.  I really didn't like the "hold the house while the hard drive downloads" mission.  The thing that screwed me up was that after the transfer started, they said to go down and get a better weapon.  But when I was halfway downstairs, they started screaming at me to go plant claymores in the driveway.  I ran back upstairs, but didn't have nearly enough time to plant the mines, and that's even if I knew where the hell they were talking about.  I can see how that mission could have been a neat sniper-esque defense, but I simply didn't have enough time to figure out what exterior areas needed covering, so I just hung around in the back room with sight lines to the two doors and played whack-a-Russian.  Not fun at all.

Through the whole thing, I suffered tons and tons of cheap deaths from various things exploding with little to no warning, getting shot from strange directions, and getting shot while I was trying to figure out where I was supposed to go.  My favorite cheap deaths were the ones where a teammate was sitting patiently at a corner, sometimes glancing around it, and so I round the corner only to find an enemy or two standing right out in the open waiting to shoot me.  Teammates were just more than happy to ignore enemies until you cross the magical "combat trigger" line.  It's as annoying as it's ever been.

I did like the massive combat in DC, as well as the fight on the oil rig.  The fight in the boneyard reminded me of the opening level of Metal Gear 4.  I also really liked the slo-mo breach, though knowing if there were hostages inside and how many would have helped a lot.  IDing targets is really hard when there's debris in  your face for half of your slo-mo time.  The vehicle sections were actually much better than I was expecting them to be, and I liked the whole blizzard level.

The other thing I really didn't love was your character constantly getting killed.  They were fairly sparing with it in CoD4, so it had a lot of impact.  There were at least two (three?) of these in this one, and it started to come off as a bit rote.  Permanent death of your character needs to be something that's used extremely sparingly, or these games are quickly going to start becoming predictable.  Maybe they could work on a Game of Thrones game next.  Then they'd get to kill you every ten minutes as you hop between characters.

So I guess I'll start up the MP tonight.  We'll see how long my patience at getting shot every 10 seconds holds out.  On the plus side, I never need to take the extended mag perk, since I'm never alive long enough to run out of bullets.  biggrin

Pretty much agree with your SP assessment, Chaz.

Spoiler for Hiden:
I'd go so far as to say the perma-death and the shocking scene are becoming too common.  It was unique in the first game, and really stunning (and used in the same mission).  The terrorist mission, while quite disturbing and effective emotionally, didn't have the impact it should have.  It seemed to come in the exact same spot, story-flow-wise.  It made me think, "Oh, here's there nuke sequence."  Also, there was no build up to it.  It would have been much more effective to have the character infiltrate the group, then have to attack a rival cell to further the cause or take some weapon.  Get us comfortable playing the bad guy.  Maybe even let us enjoy it a little bit for a couple of missions.  THEN pull the horror out.  Also, the impact was deadened when they dropped a nuke anyway.  Except it was really an EMP, I guess.  That didn't seem to do any physical damage in Washington where it hit, but was able to blow up a guy IN SPACE.  The DC levels also lost something, since it felt like I was playing a Fallout 3 prequel.  That may just have been bad timing for them, though.

The Wolverines section also was missing something, IMO.  Civilians.  It was cool to see a plane in a house, for example, but it just felt like Generic Town, USA.  Let us stumble on some holed up citizens, though, or even some dead bodies, and it would have been more chilling.  Though I'm glad we didn't get an escort mission.

The final showdown felt too similar to the one in the last game, too (though in reality, that sequence may have technically been better in the sequel).  And the bad guy's motivations felt way underdeveloped and vague.

Overall, I still liked the game, but it felt a lot like they stuck to the previous formula too closely (something that was fresh and exciting, and the farthest thing from a formula at the time).

Spoiler for Hiden:
in regards to the bad guy angle, i totally agree.  when i was thinking about it earlier after reading a post in the news, the biggest loss of gravity in that sequence is how you are just thrown in, no questions asked.  had it been a bit more like the undercover stuff in the last splinter cell, it would have been better.  instead, we get dumped off the elevator with a shooting gallery and no sense of risk.  it's shocking for no other reason than to shock.

i think they missed the boat regarding the nuke sequence.  i missed most of it until it was explained later on that the nuke seems be launched intentionally by price and then detonated to disrupt the russian advance.  of course, had they made you storm the sub to stop it, it would have been a complete rip off of that level in mw1.  that act was later used by shephard to brand 141 a rogue unit, among other things.

agreed on both the wolverines mission and the fast food dash that they would have been much better if there were some civilian presence, perhaps a forced moment when you have to either let russians execute a group rounded up or risk getting wiped out in a pitched battle.  or a defense/escort section where you are fighting to get survivors into a defensible building.

the last moment was cool, but it felt like they simply took the post nuke shambling around effect and combined it with the bridge standoff from mw1.  i would have preferred a more direct battle where you are also fist fighting the general.  instead, it felt like a qte.
7205  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dragon Age Countdown on: November 12, 2009, 09:44:53 PM
so, does that mean that playing as a rogue is going to screw me up later on?  i was hoping to take advantage of the long ranch + dual wielding talents the first time out.

i haven't played much yet, only up past the joining, but i've managed half of my battles without too much difficulty.  mainly, i just need to change my approach from the action heavy games i'm used to.
7206  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Modern Warfare 2 Impressions [And official GT Review] on: November 12, 2009, 05:50:36 PM
F'ing dsl connection crapped out on me again last night.  able to log in to live, but not stable enough to download the damn patch i need to try it.  i am going to dump this stupid crappy isp as soon as i can arrange it.  i expect live to go dead, but not just for me while all of you rank up into the thirties.  at this rate, i'll be around for half of you through your first prestige rank and flail around behind everybody who doesn't.  i'm so pissed i wasted time with the damn modem when nothing helped.  i still get a 'some content is unavailable' message 90% of the time and none of the marketplace stuff is even visible on the dashboard.

i finished the sp as a result and a handful of the spec ops missions.  man, some of those are really short, like the sneaking into the village mission.

end game stuff
Spoiler for Hiden:
ok, so it makes more sense that shephard acted that way, even though it's questionable how he convinced some of his men that the 141 members needed to be killed and torched.  that was a bit unexpected.  it also fleshes out the airport level and your part in it.  he was behind that plan and basically sent a good soldier to be the fall guy.  shephard acts his part as the good general until the gov't gives him full control, when he uses that to recruit loyal soldiers as his hit squad and turns on makarov by sending 141 after him and his nuke plan.

in essence, the whole damn plot revolves around shephard getting revenge on the russians for their involvement in the first game.

who's left to be the target for mw3?  sure, soap and price are fugitives now, but it's not like anybody will listen to them and with shephard dead, no proof.  i have a feeling the next one goes up the president.

before i joined gg, i had been really big into the white wolf vampire novels and the first VtM pc game and picked it as in the lor, caine is the first vampire, cursed by all around him.  i don't feel cursed or anything, but i liked the name.

my gamertag is from kim stanley robinson's Mars trilogy, a character himself named for a geological feature on the planet.  i've always had a fascination with mars and when i went to play guild wars, i needed a last name.  the mispelling is unintentional, but better fitting i think.
7208  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Modern Warfare 2 Impressions [And official GT Review] on: November 11, 2009, 05:04:46 PM
F N crappy net connection would last long enough to see an update was required, but not actually download the damn thing.  every time i tried, it would just sit and eventually dump back to the dashboard.  getting a stupidly frustrating message about certain options not being available to live, but mp should work.  well, that's all fine and dandy except when you have a forced update system.  after screwing around with the damn router and modem for a while, i called it quits and played the sp up past the ultimate 'flag waving from' moment IW retook from treyarch.  that was a great level due to the trick they played, but at the end, i thought, 'damn, haven't i done this before?"

i didn't find rio too annoying once i got the layout.  it's not really a spawn closet kind of thing, but the enemy does work to flank you quite effectively.

i really enjoyed the levels in the blizzard and i also like the nods to red dawn.  hits a bit close to home, so IW did a good job with that.

i can definitely tell which levels will be a huge pita on veteran though.  some of those were tough on regular.  the game does seem to have more checkpoints then before, so that will help.

hope to get in some mp tonight, but i tried to get the patch this morning and ran into the same problem.

i'd love a space mmorpg set in Ben Bova's current universe, with corporations (and corporate warfare, espionage), scientists and religious organizations working against each other to unseat the balance (religious zealots working to disrupt scientific experiments, scientists looking to dispute the tenets of the religions), all set within this solar system.  give us every planet and moon and map them out with all sorts of potential discoveries, ancient relics, alien life, valuable resources etc.  you have a subset of Eve with a more detailed and concentrated realm.

not all of the current crop of comedies are based around bodily functions.  some of them have drugs as a central point and have been very good.  i think it's shallow to throw out this generation's comedies though as there have been many great ones.  i think the old group has missed the ride though and should probably resign themselves to the past instead of trying to prove how funny they are.

sounds like some of the flaws of veteran mode snuck into regular this time.  one reviewer said it took him 7 hours on hardened, which is considerably less than it took me through my w@w hardened run and a drop in the bucket compared to my half run of mw1 on veteran, so i'm confident i'll be ok here.

has anyone tried sp on hardened/veteran?  i am curious if they really tweaked it the way they said they would or if you still get 30 enemies at each little checkpoint from their clown car-esque huts and one room buildings.

it was totally killing me that i wouldn't be able to make the midnight launch, and now i only wish i had pushed myself out of the door despite the hour long drive, long lines and crappy weather to come in to work late and then fight off sleep until later tonight.

the game sits, sadly unopened in my glovebox and i didn't have to fight anybody off to get it and got it for $50 to boot.  i was tempted by the two other versions, and even saw someone buying the nvg edition, but $30 is a lot to pay just to get cod1, when it's totally likely i wouldn't even finish a play through with it. hell, i even pondered the super deluxe edition, the one with an xbox in it, but the wife would probably use it to bludgeon me into a stupor.

mp. tonight.
can't! freaking! wait!

the thing is, it seems odd that even 1 more line would actually work for all items.  hell, most of the uniques have a red line for commentary, then the stats, but it seems like they should have more than that based on some of the rare weapons i have found.

i found an odd one recently that acts differently when zoomed in.  assault rifle with the usual 3 round burst zoomed out and empties the clip when i zoom in.  it's awesome against brutes as i can get the put the full clip into their head while they stagger and burn due to the incendiary ammo and low recoil.  if they aren't moving around too much, i take them out in one burst.

any points deals that i have found are always listed on cheapassgamer's forums.  the last one was the tru b2g1f deal on accessories;  live cards fall under that category there.  before that, it was a $5gc with the $20 card at target.  from my experience, there are only a few times each year that you can easily get deals on cards, and i doubt there will be any more for a while.

yeah, i can definitely say that i'm having fun as the soldier.  i've upped my sniper skill enough to reduce the weapon sway and i actually use that a fair amount, even without perks, as it percs all the time with incendiary attacks.  closer up, i swap to an AR (157 damage, 45 in the clip, no natural weapon sway) for crit shots.  if i'm even the least bit protected, i can take out most enemies in 1 burst, badasses in two.  i have a kickass mg Hark gave me that holds almost three hundred rounds for crowd control and a unique shotgun (damage 300+, fires 6 rounds all at once) that shreds anything that gets close.  i barely use the turret any more except as a diversion.  throw it down and flank.  once i get more points to spend, i'll improve it again.

the biggest problem i have is in the arenas as you don't get enough places for good cover and many of the baddies have explosive launchers.  i scraped by the final round of the second arena even though it was rated 4 levels below me.

i should have been clearer.  i didn't finish it, i'm just not into it that much and have no desire to go back to it.  that said, you should be able to get a lot of playtime with it, as there's a ton of levels and two modes to play through.  puzzle, where you are given some objective to complete, and speed, where you only need to get to the star.  after that, there's an advanced mode for each level where you get 3 rounds in the level and cannot reuse any items, which could boost creativity.

had some good loot drops last night and finally got to upgrade.  i'm kind of surprised the second area has so many quests.  am i right in thinking it's the last area as well or does it open up a whole new hub base after new haven?  i leveled up to 31 with my soldier and aside from the last fight in the arena, i've been able to handle everything the game throws at me.  i've pretty much dumped my turret points in favor or straight on damage with assault rifles and mg's, but i might spec out a few turret lines after my others are maxed.

co-op with the nyge last night and we ran through a pretty good chunk of quests.  damn, melee fighters really own the bruisers up close.

soulchilde was granted the name in ancient times, by nomadic hunter gatherers for his penchant for devouring the souls of bad children.
