A lot of interesting tidbits in the GAF thread. Rumor is that there are no grips for LMGs. There are 50 ranks per level, but 15 prestige levels. No death streaks.

Something we were talking about today - the rumor around second chance (same as last stand) is that the pro version allows any teammate to revive you. If true, that could get annoying.

i'll be bummed if that's true about the LMG's.  once i got that unlocked in mw2, that was pretty much the standard loadout for me.  well, until i got ranked up enough to have that and the scope at the same time.

Eurogamer has an excellent article about the 4 hour comment.

It's worth reading, but here's the relavent info:

Quote
While Vanquish maintains its own in-game timers that measure progress as you move from level to level, by stitching together all of the captures into one enormous video, we can time exactly how long it took to complete the game. The result? Eight hours, 47 minutes. However, my completion stats were rather poor. I died many, many times: 54 to be precise, although admittedly many of them were down to one particular boss with an extremely annoying one-touch kill attack. Regardless, the completion stats made it clear that there was still much to learn in mastering this game... which is perhaps the whole point.

But to address the game length issue, let's get a measure of Vanquish's actual game content by cutting out all the cut-scenes, removing all of our deaths and giving it to you straight from start to finish. Is it conceivably possible that you can complete it in under four hours? Here's the entirety of the game presented in just 15 minutes of accelerated gameplay. There's a timer in the top-left to give you an idea of the passage of time as the game was played.

Even in these ultra-optimistic conditions, the timer winds up at five hours, four minutes. Beating that time on your first playthrough of the game by over an hour would require the ability to sail through losing no lives whatsoever, intimately knowing all the strategies required to beat each level right off the bat. In short, unless you're a superhumanly adept player with a phenomenal gift of foresight, the chances of you completing the game in under four hours are extremely remote.

wow, they went full geek on this one.  impressive.  wish they had done this earlier as i might have taken advantage of the deal they had running at kmart.  buy the game and get another one half off plus get $20 credit.  i am sure the good stuff is gone now.
7207  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Medal of Honor returns (modern combat in Afghanistan) on: October 23, 2010, 04:03:54 AM
during the end of mission 2, you have up to 4 weapons and switch between them.  during the apache section, you only get to use the guided missiles when the other chopper paints them.  otherwise you switch between the chain gun and the rockets.

unless i have forgotten a section that is.

By the time I got to them in FO3, I was mopping the floor with them.  Probably just need to level up some more.

I had an alien raygun at the point iI first encountered them in FO3 due to stumbling across the crashed alien ship.  I didn't even realize they were supposed to be hard to kill  icon_lol
i think i was too concerned about fighting them until i knew i was ready and stayed the hell out of their region until much later in my game.  by then i could take out super mutants with ease and had a lot of kick ass weapons.

it's arena flight combat with the usual mp game modes (TDM, CTF) and a pretty decent graphics engine behind it.  was it worth full price?  not sure, but for a buck and a half, i'm willing to take a chance.

no word on how long the sale will last.  it's also getting patched soon with a pretty decent upgrade.  there is also a demo.

I think I'm also going to bite the bullet and grab the game guide. I figure it will be fun reading.

it's pretty well written and great to get a handle on all of the changes they made. I wish I had had the guide before I started out as I would have chosen different skills and traits.  It has a good section on hardcore mode and the usual character builds. It's too bad I couldn't sneak it in to work as I would love to read up during the  slow times.

Amazon last had the hardcover version for under $20 so you might want to start there.
7217  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What happens in New Vegas.... The FO:NV impressions thread on: October 21, 2010, 06:01:19 PM
I've had the flailing arm bit and it's disappointing that it wasn't seen and fixed as i've already seen this happen a lot in just a few hours. I also ran into a one I haven't seen mentioned yet. I had on Joe cobbs armor and was KoS to the ncr so the first one to see me actually caugh me unaware and killed me. After I reloaded, I swapped armor and went out to find and talk to him instead. Not far from his outpost, I crouched down in case he was somehow hostile to me. Well, before I even saw the guy, up popped his inventory. I closed it and it popped again. Still no where on site and I hadn't clicked A at all. The second time, I figured on helping myself to the "invisible man's" stuff and he comes running at me from the main base and attacks. Guess my telekinetic pickpocket got his attention.

Also, are you supposed to be awarded perks at every level or just when the new choices become available?  Not sure if they changed that from FO3 or if I hit another bug. The level up screen didn't pop immediately afterwards but not long after I killed a gecko who was attacking.
7218  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What happens in New Vegas.... The FO:NV impressions thread on: October 20, 2010, 08:14:50 PM

Got to play for a bit last night and it does feel like a well written but technically imperfect mod. I ran into two problems already, once stuck in a rock and another where I hit level 2 and didn't get the upgrade screen. Had to revert a bit but I was able to level up afterwards. Playing with hardcore on as otherwise it would feel too much like fo3 for me. It hasn't been annoying yet and it already influences how I am playing.

Going with a stealthy ranged/melée survivalist hunter and working to boost my repair skill up as well. I like that the perks are not all 100% positive.  I wish I could take a day off to get immersed in it.

7222  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: GOTY editions and resale/trade on: October 19, 2010, 08:03:06 PM
I am kind of ambivalent on this as I bought the first two dlc for fallout before they announced the goty version. I got that on sale and as it included what I bought, I had essentially an unsellable copy of those two unless I was willing to part with the dlc disc.  The flipside is now available if I get the borderlands goty. Now I can sell the codes for the two I have so it's actually beneficial up front.

Where I would make he case for on disc dlc is to allow those wihout access the ability to play the dlc. In this case, as it was wih the RE5 goty, it is completely useless for folks in that situation, like armed forces over seas.

luckily the new MoH doesn't go off the rails like Airborne did with Super Nazis.

you must have missed the secret level with it's super Taliban and their bullet-repulsing turbans as you fought to secure the underground mountain fortress and it's batteries of ground penetrating mole cannons.

That was a huge pain in the ass level, especially when they brought in the mind-washed Russian grizzlies.

small bit of the characters VO

there are already a number of gameplay vids on youtube but i imagine they are either going to be heavy on the spoilers or from hacked systems.  they look pretty good though and the environments outside look like a cross of RDR and FO3.

the one i watched had a guy at very low level attack an encampment.  pretty bone-headed.

sadly, the stilted 3rd person walking animation is still present though.  the m16 style carbine is going to be a nice hunting rifle from the looks of it.  good damage and accuracy.

time has come to let the previous thread pass into history.  now's it's time to go back to the western wasteland and see how the world has fared since the dweller and his descendants made their mark on the world.

so, who's in, who's going for hardcore mode and who still thinks you can't save any where?

i haven't decided whether to try that mode myself or not.  it could be a huge pita or could be a vital part of the experience.

that has to be the msrp and i wouldn't expect it to be that high in the stores.  i may just have to rent it if it is though.  the game is pretty damn cool and i am interested in seeing how that translates to the big screen.  the next time i go to a book store i plan on looking for this.

checking the listing I see the MSRP is actually $39.99.  Hopefully someone else will have it at a lower price.

you might also look around for some asian delis and ask them if they do/know someone who roasts them.  the place we get ours from is often used to seeing two complete strangers buy a half a pig and you might even be able to buy some in smaller portions.  nothing really compares to the slow roasting and we've tried various attempts ourselves.

this whole thread has started off a party next july for no reason at all except as an excuse to have one.

in previous years, we would go to 2 or 3 parties with a pig roast.  not so many the last year though. frown
