7001  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: What's Behind (and Ahead for) the Plunging Price of Oil on: October 27, 2008, 10:43:19 PM

Quote from: jament on October 27, 2008, 04:14:34 PM

Yeah, I don't know...

30 miles from where I live, we have 4 wind farm projects.  The first phase is done, about 10 miles from the coal-fired power plant where they'll put that electricity generated from the first 60 turbines on the grid.  Eventually, there will be around 300 wind turbines in that area.

Each turbine requires hundreds of yards of concrete, brought in from 60 miles away.  Each turbine, blade set and tower is brought in from the east coast by rail and trucked the last 300 miles to the site.  Each turbine requires that 6 semi-trucks (1 for turbine engine, 2 for blades, 3 for tower) and twelve pilot cars make that 600-mile round trip.  So, 10,800 miles per turbine on the highway and thousands of miles by diesel-powered rail.  Then there's the energy required to engineer, manufacture and produce each unit - impressive pieces of machinery, to be sure.

The first phase, according to the utility, will provide 16.8 megawatts of power when fully functional, enough to power an average of 4,300 households per year and the turbines are projected to last for 25 years.  That's some pure, clean, renewable energy.  So clean that if we consider the carbon footprint of the manufacture and installation of each turbine, if they operate trouble-free for 25 years, we could actually break even.

It's schadenfreude.

pitifully sad when you put it that way.  don't forget the carbon footprint of all the people who designed, manufactured, delivered, installed, operate and maintain the site.

first time in a while where i felt connected to a game world, enough so that after ignoring the temple of lights pleas for help and finding out what that did to them, i bought a house there, married and had a kid.  for some reason, i feel responsible for this village since i let them down.  i also played music for the baby, just because.  i wonder how long they take to grow up, i have a dolly for her and some new presents for both her and her mom.

demon door related:
Spoiler for Hiden:
i also unlocked the demon door in that region and found the sweet little house inside.  i plan on moving them inside it as it should be "safer" there and it looks a heck of a lot nicer too.

sadly, with fallout hitting this week, i will be taking a break from it.  not enough time to do this game justice imho.  i will be buying up as much real estate as i can though, just so i have a nice fat bonus when i get back in.  smile

i think this year will be the last one for me once they do their yearly sale.  always a good bargain to be found (assuming it's not broken like dead rising was)

had pretty good luck with launch day games, but once it's out, forget about it.  i could have nothing but the one game i want and still end up with something 10th on my list.

Spoiler for Hiden:
finished the spire last night.  damn what a depressing place that was.  and not just the environment either.  i was pretty surprised that the timeline jumped forward as much as it did.  i wonder if my refusing to submit had anything to do with that.

i also got married and had a kid last night, and while by my actions, i have somewhat progressed more to neutral instead of full evil, apparently my daughter is.  i'm buying up as many shops as i can afford and a number of houses too.  damn cool to have money trickling in like that all the time.

i wanted to finish this before fallout comes out, but now i just want to stay in this world more and more.

i got that one after hitting 10x multiplier in wood chopping, and only ever getting to 9x in smithing, so i think that's the trigger.
7014  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fable II Impressions thread on: October 24, 2008, 06:27:47 PM
i missed out on playing this yesterday, but at least i can expect a bigger payout from the jewelry stand i bought.  i think i'll end up buying all of the little stands in town before i go find someone to marry, although i still plan to get my revenge on the jeweler for dumping me.  i never even made a proposal to another woman, but she thinks that all the other people in town who love me are vying for her man.  again, i wish you could inherit the properties of people you marry.

last night, while watching the game shows with my wife, she said something about turning it to her favorite show, "wheel of torture".  that spurred me to tell her about fable's version and what i planned to do to the jeweler.  got a nasty look for that, but what can you do, i am a bad bad man (in game)

hark, we need to go terrorizing the world some night.  could be a lot of fun.   icon_twisted

well, after ~10 hours of playing, i finally figured out what the H those gargoyle statues are.  it was driving me crazy to hear those damn impish voices insulting me, and then i saw one above an archway.  it was satisfying to blow it up with the rifle i have.

i find that money making offline is much slower than i thought it would be, something like 1 payoff per hour vs the every 5 minutes or so in game.  oh well, it won't hurt i suppose and if you play it evil, you can make more off them.   icon_twisted

my fiancee (in game jeweller in bowerstone) broke up with me after a few days of not getting married.  i think i'll use the 20k i have earned, buy a house, woo her again, marry her, then find out what the "wheel of evil" is all about.  icon_twisted  i hear spouses get bonus points too.

anyone notice that the regular jobs time out?  i had that happen with the blacksmith and i wonder if i'll be able to finish off the job to level 5.  it is harder, but the money is better than wood chopping for me.  i also advanced far enough to do a merc mission.  nothing too hard, just clearing out a basement full of bugs, but it paid pretty well.

i have found a wandering book seller who helped me train my dog to level 3 in both treasure and fighting, and now i see he gets beaten up during fights more often and needs healing.  we are still evil, although i think i see him turning brown again.  i'm still very blue, and can see strong chest muscles over a slight paunch (too much fatty foods i guess).  no magic running through my veins, but i try to mix it in now and again.  using the fire spell pretty exclusively as the force push just didn't seem to be as helpful.  ranged combat allows me to zoom in for more damage, but it's very slow.  melee unlocked combos last night, and those are very nice.  combine that with flourishes, and i can handle a mob nicely.

great little moment last night when a villager remarked that i was quite scar free for being such a well known fighter.  i had one odd thing happen when wandering around old bowerstone.  a villager attacked me on sight.  needless to say, she didn't put up much of a fight, but thankfully, i wasn't charged with anything.

getting further into the story and fought some tougher enemies than bandits and hobbes (sp?), plus a large boss, which was cool.

From what I understand the 360 version is pretty damn good and not noticeably gimped from the PC version with one exception: PC version has quicksaves and the 360 version doesn't.

down to the last day and i still have this pc vs 360 debate going on my head.  other than the quicksave (btw, i read that they weren't save-anywhere at all.  did that change?)  my pc is pretty, comparable to the 360 and i am pretty decent with console shooters, so the biggest thing is mp.  if i go pc, i doubt i'll do very much at all but it could be fun.  damn, which would be a better experience:  couch, big screen, controller, or monitor, mods, mouse/keyboard?

this makes it the first time when a multi release game is equally good for both.

here's some shots from the PC version.  maybe it'll help you decide  icon_twisted

my pc is getting near 3 years old now (bought for oblivion) and the video card does admirably with lots of dx9 games but after my hassles in getting stalker CS to run at good speeds without dumping every graphic to 1/3rd, i picked up far cry for the 360.  only played up to the priest, but it really looks great.  yes, i will end up missing out on something i know, but for now, this does nicely.

graphics are quite good, and i love the change of time when you sleep through the night.  just wish you could force yourself awake after you mistakenly set the clock to 11 hours ahead instead of 1 hour.  doh!

i wish they marked the mercs on your map with the binoculars like they did in fc1.  after the first big tutorial mission to rescue that guy, i had to wonder how many enemies were left wandering around, and they can be pretty stealthy if they want to.

cool.  thanks for the heads up.  i think i'll try to swap my pre-order to the 360 instead.  did you pre-order the game?  i was under the impression that pre-ordering would get extra stuff, but they never mentioned emailing it or anything so i assumed it was something physically different from the regular version everyone else has.  if it's just a reg version with a download code, or something in game like they had for burnout paradise, then the codes should be leaked somewhere already and easily added in game.

Never did see you Myto.  The only person I saw was USMC Kato and I couldn't figure out what to do because I think I missed the pop up message.  From reading this thread I gather we can chat if we sync up or something.  Kato's orb and mine were literally one last night (that didn't sound right  ninja) but I didn't know what to do.  I felt like Lockdown.  icon_wink

target the orb, press LT, then you can interact with "A".  bit clunky, imo, but it allows you to interact with them even after they left the area.

pretty unusual feature to have the orbs in game like that, but i like it.  nothing like going to work in game and seeing your friends toil along with you at the blacksmith.

anyone grab their pre-order from gamestop?  i am curious if their special edition is the same as the wooden box deal everywhere else.  that's the only reason i pre-ordered there due to it being priced the same as the regular version.

i am now leaning towards the 360 version by roscoe's early impressions.

how well do the fps controls work roscoe?  how frantic is the action?  what's your impression of the environment, damage, and of course, fire?

i probably played more in one sitting yesterday than i will get to again, so here's a little picture of a neutral-chaotic's slide into the dark side.  i started out as a child by selling the warrants to the underworld boss, giving the drunk his wine, and trashing the barn instead of the beetles.  my picture was rude, too.  i forget which way i went with the last one, but needless to say, that part of bowerstone was quite seedy when i got back.  i generally did good as a young adult and followed the quest while veering off into the woods now and again to hunt for loot and random fights, using 40% melee and range and very little magic.

my path began to slide when i used the assassin's coat and bandit's mask, and again when i took my first assassination job.  i wasn't expecting it to be quite so evil, but more like the dark brotherhood quests in oblivion.   here, you pretty much end up murdering decent folk who pissed off the wrong people (who are usually bad themselves).  this one was troublesome as she was a gypsy and i felt a degree of guilt at luring her off with promises of friendship into the woods.  i was watched though, and ended up offing two guards who came to arrest me.  well, there goes the path of light.  after getting away from the lake, i followed the main quest along to meet the first hero and get her on our side.  i then met a departed soul with an evil offer of revenge, which i took and performed to his expectations.  when i went back to town, i hired a henchmen (usmc kato) and we proceeded to find a bug.  the quest i tried to finish off glitched, putting me in spectate mode, him into ghost mode, and neither of us able to attack anyone or even interact.  luckily, it cleared up when i walked back to town.

we then took another assassination job which is where i made my last slide into darkness.  with each target we killed, we ended up wracking up quite a body count in guards and random villagers who tried to defend against us.  when one villager kicked my dog as he walked past, we sliced him apart.  nobody kicks my dog, pal.  my body count in the lake area was a baker's dozen with an 11k fine.  this brings up my only complaint about the internal game logic.  i was able to erase the blood debt with a simple quest to kill 4 weak bandits, who put up barely a fight.  nice to know that 13 kills punishment = 1 kill's punishment.  my alignment went over to 100% dark after that and i now resemble a blue demon with claws.  the dog now has black fur and bright red eyes.  i scare people just by walking past, but oddly enough can still pick up chicks.  i guess the like the bad guy here too.  i really wish you could inherit a business by marrying the owner, but seeing as i haven't bought a decent house for her yet, i can't say for sure.  i did buy the jewelry shop last night and turned it on to find a ~$700 payment after a short moment.  it doesn't add up as fast as it does in real time, but it will help in the long run.

game looks great, and plays pretty well too.  i have been able to upgrade my melee/ranged abilities and see some of the better stuff coming, so combat will get better as you do.  only knocked out once after an extended fight against the zombies, but no visible scars.  i can't wait to put more time into this tonight and see if can change my alignment back to neutral at least.

there was an activity in that one where you broke in at night and cracked the safes.  they had a mini game attached to them as well, but it wasn't hard.  then you had to carry your loot to the trunk and get it all back to the pawn shop (or whatever).  if you tried to hit the same place too soon again, they would post guards.

they had an achievement for it too, after 40 of them things.

i didn't realize that there were so much extra things not even mentioned in game, like mugging, streaking and ho-hoing.  you also get more respect for drive bys.

got really annoyed with a fuzz mission when one of my targets got stuck in a support pillar and was seemingly unkillable.  i kept using c4 to try it but couldn't kill him that way.  ended up using a shotgun on him.  that sucked up all of my time though and i didn't complete the mission.  tried about 5 or so times to get past level three of fuzz in the suburbs and it gets hard.  not sure if using the specific weapons will actually make a difference as chainsaw/flamethrower seem to take more time to kill them than actually increase my ratings.  especially the damn flamethrower.  they run and put the flames out too fast and make me run them down again.  pita.  not to mention when they set me or the cameraman on fire.

did a small bit of mp.  that was fun.  had a great moment when an rpg round blasted a van towards us as it caught fire, exploding in the intersection.  ahh, Mayhem is so much fun in mp.

i look forward to more mp.

Apparently, it's much harder than the average shooter until you get into its mindset.  For some, that's a good thing.  For me, I'm not so sure anymore.  I didn't see any mention on if the levels are of the "too long" category, which the last one seemed to be.

sounds like they went with the stalker approach to gameplay, not that i mind it sometimes.  levels don't apply here as this is a total freeform game ala gta, oblivion etc.  no loading screens either.  i'm pretty excited and have the pc version on pre-order and the 360 version on my gamefly queue (for possible gt mp fun)

comparing it stalker: clear sky would be a better match instead of far cry 1.  faction wars, exploration, and difficulty set more to realism instead of arcadey fun (gta, saints row, mercs)

the amazing graphics are very much a part of fc2.  when was the last time you got to burn your enemies out of a building or lure them out at night with a suspiciously set fire?  not even crysis allowed you to torch things.

been too long for me to remember the whole story, but the firebombing of the restaurant stands out as one of the greatest set piece levels.

too bad they didn't use the music theme from the games.  mp2 has such a haunting theme song that would have fit nicely.

i want to see this movie in the theaters.

Well, the movie is based on MP1 not MP2.  There's probably going to be a sequel.

oh yeah, i know that about the movie.  i just really thought the theme for 2 was a great piece.

here's a good amateur version of it.  amateur in renown, not in quality, btw.
