7001  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Do you still get excited for games by id? on: July 22, 2009, 04:45:13 PM
i played doom 3 for a bit until the repetitious mechanics of the gameplay became obvious and i tired of plodding through.  i do appreciate what the engine did like the keypad interaction and such and obviously, it was a very nice looking shooter.  in the end, i feel like a lot of us probably do when playing an id game;  i can't wait to see what X does with this engine.
7002  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 'Splosion Man 'splodes today! on: July 22, 2009, 04:40:20 PM
downloaded this morning, played the first mission, and then bought it to play the next few.  i would have played more, but that whole 'work' thing got in the way.

so far, it's pretty interesting.  a combination speed run, puzzling platformer, and hunt for the secret item (nice nod btw).  the graphics are sharp and remind me of maw, portal, and team fortress 2, ie cartoony and bright with exaggerated proportions.

it's not been too hard, but with 3 of 50 single player missions done, i'm not expecting them to be.  they are not overly long either, and the par times for each have been in the 90 second mark.  i think the best i have been able to do so far is over 3, but that's also skipping the secret item.

i really liked the maw, even though it was fairly short, and still use the premium theme unlocked at completion.  i plan on changing it once i beat splosion man as i think it's a pretty cool unlock.  this also has avatar stuff, so i'm interested to see what that is.
7003  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Worst Game System Purchase as a Gamer on: July 22, 2009, 06:40:12 AM
wii.  don't know why i keep the damn thing.  all it does is sit there and hide on the shelf.  biggest regret i've had after the big games came and gone.  come on N, where's the damn awesome 1st party licenses now?  should have sold it after smg.  last great game i played.

cool.  let us know where and when we can get a copy.  i would love to read a zombie novel set in this region.

I picked up a couple 1600 pt cards at Target since they have the $5 back deal, so maybe 'Splosion Man if I dig the demo.

assuming i can find any cards nearby, i'll probably do the same.  maw was a pretty fun diversion.

i don't thinks it's stupid to have a buy-back policy at all. in fact, it makes both sides happy with the dd model.  i for one can recoup some of the cost of buying a game, either from finishing it and having no further interest, or from buying something i end up regretting.  regret due to satisfaction, not remorse, btw.  buyers' remorse only happens when the damn game drops in price the month after i get it, but it's an acceptable risk imo.  'buy-back' also gets the used market out from under the stigma of "taking away from the devs" as it removes that option from the buyer.  it's a great move and i will support it.

it's not about 'assuaging fears' as you put it, it's about giving us the same options we have with physical media.

and regarding cost, if same price = more money going back to the devs instead of to the stores, then i'm all for it too.

... attack the peloton ...

yeah, i think i'm going to have to bow out on this one as i don't have a freaking clue what a peloton is nor why i'd be attacking it.

i still think it's cool that something unique was made though.  it gives me hope for an eventual release of wii curling.

the sega cd gets a pass for me on the basis of lunar 1 and 2 alone.  and sonic cd was pretty damn cool too.  other than that, it was mostly bad ports and fmv crapfests.
7011  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Digital Games sales are growing up on: July 16, 2009, 09:24:58 PM
good to hear that.  stardock has always been a good company, so i would have no qualms about buying full games from them.
7012  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Awesome App Megathread on: July 16, 2009, 05:07:52 PM
i need to revive this a bit.  anybody used a good remote desktop iphone app?  i see there's a few, both using RDP and client/server apps like logmein ignition and vnc clients, but i'm not dropping money on them when reviews are all over the freaking place for pretty much all of them.

jaadu looks pretty slick, but at $25 bucks, i need more than a 3 sentence review to pull the trigger

i would use vnc/logmein as those are pretty slick and should be easy to set up, but i cannot add them to the servers here.

7013  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Digital Games sales are growing up on: July 16, 2009, 04:59:12 PM
while i love the download services and have bought from almost all of them, i really dislike the one aspect you cannot avoid:  resale.  do any of the services allow you to sell the copy/transfer the license you have once you are done?  if they did that, i would probably buy more major releases that way, not just special cases like half life 2 and sale priced games.

maybe in 2015, when devs finally get the elusive 'duct tape' physics down.  i hear that is quite difficult for modern computers to handle.

now, just imagine how cool it would be to fire both at the same time?  flaming bullets at ya, alien bitches (and bastages)

as am i, considering i bought (and later returned) the gc version of it for $40 a year or so ago.

different difficulties?  i'll have to try the demo.  i'm somewhat ambivalent as i passed on N+ last week.  i played it before online and on the psp, but it quickly went from fun to frustrating monotony.

this could be awesome and one more reason for me to finally upgrade the old wingman 3d joystick i have laying around to something more recent.  that and arma 2 (and maybe that WW I flight game) are luring me away from the console.

god damn that's a weird promo.  now, with your nvg's and gow 2 lancer, you will be a fine target for the local PD to take down when they get the call you are prowling around in your black sweat pants at night.

i'd have to say though, as one whom firmly believes that a zombie apocalypse is rising, NVG's would be downright vital  thumbsup

the funny thing about chrome 2 is that it was first hinted at over three years ago and not a peep out of them about it for a long time since.  i figured it was dead or rolled into something else.  it was on my radar due to the potential for infantry vs mech combat.

knowing that coj 2 was made with it makes me somewhat interested in it now.

these.  definitely.  sadly, i think that jj is not keen to doing a sequel now that he's all big mr star trek.  he'll probably stick to doing those now until the new cast gets as old as the first.  not that there's anything wrong with it, but cloverfield could make a killer sequel, something like a 28 weeks later (where is 28 months btw?)

i wish you the best of luck on that interview.  may it land you a permanent gig.  too many i know haven't been able to get stable jobs post layoff, myself included, but contract work is still work.

7033  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: New Mechwarrior coming on: July 09, 2009, 04:10:45 PM
they want to make the mech's more viable so you don't just move on as soon as the next big thing comes available.  i love that as i was very fond of using lights to take down heavies by surgically removing their weapons and hobbling them.

now, all we need is the marauder II and i'll be happy.

as usual with these gamestop sales, if you want something on the list, better go soon.  i grabbed the last copy of hawx for the 360 yesterday and it was only the first day of the sale.

and yes, they don't update the used prices on these things, ever.  which is really stupid if they want to clear out stock.

if you aren't too bushed after you hit pike's, make sure to walk down to the pier.  great amount of little things to watch and you can get your ocean fix that way.

too bad it's so short a visit though, as we could all meet up for a beer or something.

If you ever plan on having kids, it's going to get worse...because trust me, kids are great, but they're also the ultimate stress you'll have in life.

+ two headaches, aged 1 and 3.  they also cause a lot more stress in a marriage than you would expect, and it has to do with parenting workload.  when the parents work different shifts, as with my wife and I, you end up with one parent taking over more of the job of raising them and that can cause resentment. i get this all the time, and it's currently the cause of our own spat.  she resents that i get home in the evening and only have to 'put in' a few hours before taking them to bed and that i get free time afterwards.  i've learned that if i don't want her mad at me as soon as she walks in the door, i have to be off the pc or xbox, even if i've already done the usual housework.

in any case, if you are always the rock in the storm, stay strong and show her that even though you have your spats, you still love her and the little things cannot break that bond.  it's a hard trick to learn, and not one i've perfected tbh.  the ones who love you most know just what to say to hurt you.

good luck man.  good luck to us all.
7040  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: ArmA II - demo, videos, reviews and other stuff on: July 08, 2009, 04:47:36 AM
really impressed by how well it looked and ran on my system.  i was expecting a hit due to the 4400 processor and it ran very nicely at mostly high settings.  i managed to get through the first demo mission from the chopper and thought the ending was a bit abrupt.  basically, we had lost a few men on the path in and i was dragging a man to safety to patch him up when the bmp drove up.  i thought i was a dead man, but i guess he was the cavalry as none of the squad attacked or hid.  i was so invested in getting my guy out of the firefight that i didn't notice the friendly running up to my position.  had the mission not ended there, i likely would have put two into him.

i skipped arma1 after having a wretched time with the demo and played ofp up to where they start sticking you with a squad to manage, but i had a hell of a lot of fun with it and even grabbed the expansions.  arma2 does gives me the same reactions ofp does, plus the enhancements and graphics are much improved.  i do hate hearing about the stealth bug though.  that's incredibly asinine that it wasn't caught as stealth was a major part of survival in the first one.  not an easy part due to the ai's eagle enhanced eyesight, but doable.

has this hit the shelf yet?  i have been having problems with steam not finishing up the download properly and had to get both the arma2 demo and eve online from another site as steam always showed 'downloading' despite showing no progress.
