i really wish they would have let you get more than one rebate.  i had a lot of fun with a bunch of the trials but not enough to warrant a purchase for now.

i bought scott pilgrim, meat boy and lara croft.  costume quest sounded ok but the damn text was too small to read from where i sat.

The DW series is like a bad horror series:  you know the formula is intact and somewhere along the way, a whole lot of people are gonna die.

I do think the battles need reworking though. I've fought in the yellow turban revolution so many times it feels like I was there.
7007  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fable 3, now with impressions + the official GT Review! on: October 28, 2010, 02:20:18 PM
Ok, this arrived via rental last night and so far, I am pretty lukewarm about the interface and how you interact with people. You would think that the system would have been improved, not padded by unnecessary delays. Hit A to interact should have been a quick pull of one of the buttons and locked on to the targeted person like they had in fable 2.  Why drop the seamless aspect they had for a slow-ass sub menu. The graphics seemed so much crisper before and the character detail feels a bit dated.

I am nor very far in so it has time to grow on me, but I didn't feel drawn into the world the way I did with 2.

you're talking about hardcore mode, right?  I nuked that before I put the game on hiatus, I was getting bored with having to worry about food and water.
well, that's the biggest aspect of it of course, but I am also referring to the new stuff. Crafting and the survival skills, weapon mods, ammo types and reloading, and the multiple factions. It's that plus hardcore mode which raise NV to a level approaching Gothic in how immesive the world is. It's not all the way (nobody gets pissed if you wake them up in their house at 2am and threatens to attack you, and loading for caves/buildings takes you out of the game) but within the engine, the reality of the world has improved.

I am glad to hear it's done so well as that means we can expect some patches and dlc.

Ha, that's funny. I would have been tempted to leave the soldier a frag grenade.

Had one annoying issue pop up when I went to play last night. I has been up in the souhern hills hunting bighorns (mutant beef, it's what's for dinner) and saved as I was making my way north, overlooking a road and some bandits. When I loaded the save, I heard this growl and was immediately attacked by a glowing ghoul. It was not there when I saved of course and I had to try a few times to survive while keeping my eyebot alive.

Despite what the guide says, nodding the varmint gun is worn the effort. I have a long range NVG scope and a silencer on it now and between those mods, my decent sneak skill, my eye in he sky and the perk which increases critical damage against animals and I can hunt damn near anything and get the positions marked long before the are even visible to the naked eye. It also works great as a sniper rifle against the rovig gangs.

11/14 - 11/20 deals

figured this was worth posting as it's better than you can get anywhere else.  over at CAG, a rep from kmart has been given free reign to get awesome deals for new games on release week and afterwards.  it's worth noting and i know not everyone here visits there so i've decided to keep track of the deals for the GT crew.

in short, the Gaming Coupon is this:  a code printed on your receipt at the time of purchase that is valid on any gaming item, starting the sunday after you buy the game.  they can be stacked as long as you don't use the copies of the code and don't add up more than the games you are buying them with.  codes are unique per game, not by amount. ie, SWFU2 has a $20 GC, Fable 3 has a $20 GC.  using both codes on a game is ok, using two codes from two copies of SWFU2 on the same purchase is not.

Using a coupon on a game with another coupon is expressly allowed.  you can train them as long as you want.  the code takes off the amount pre tax.

Some deals grant points.  here is the info on their deal card.  unlike the best buy card, points don't take 30 days to post, which is nice.

without further ado, here are this week's deals

this week, 10-24 - 10-30.  unless noted, all games are valid for all systems they are released for.

$20 GC
RB3
SWFU2
Fable 3
Sims 3
WWE vs RAW 2011
TH Shred bundle
Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2011

$15 GC
Bakugan Defenders of the Crown

Misc.
Wii + Wii Fit - $50
DSI/DSIXL + Zhu Zhu Pets - $25
XB360 4GB - $50 in "shop your way reward points"  - Basically like best buy's reward zone.  see above link for details

On sale:
$40
MoH
Enslaved
Castlevania: LoS

I agree with everything except for the 'game-breaking bugs' (haven't seen a single one in a full playthrough), as well as the holding hands mechanic (you 'let go' if there is no way to hold hands without making for some very wonky animations, but they'll still follow as if on a leash until they get close enough again).

You may have noticed I'm currently playing the game (as some of you have messaged me) - doing so for a review for GT. So I can't say much more than what I have already.

figured as much.  how far are you into the game and how long have you played?  i am curious if the lack of traditional rpg aspects hurts the game or not.

A lot of interesting tidbits in the GAF thread. Rumor is that there are no grips for LMGs. There are 50 ranks per level, but 15 prestige levels. No death streaks.

Something we were talking about today - the rumor around second chance (same as last stand) is that the pro version allows any teammate to revive you. If true, that could get annoying.

i'll be bummed if that's true about the LMG's.  once i got that unlocked in mw2, that was pretty much the standard loadout for me.  well, until i got ranked up enough to have that and the scope at the same time.

Eurogamer has an excellent article about the 4 hour comment.

It's worth reading, but here's the relavent info:

Quote
While Vanquish maintains its own in-game timers that measure progress as you move from level to level, by stitching together all of the captures into one enormous video, we can time exactly how long it took to complete the game. The result? Eight hours, 47 minutes. However, my completion stats were rather poor. I died many, many times: 54 to be precise, although admittedly many of them were down to one particular boss with an extremely annoying one-touch kill attack. Regardless, the completion stats made it clear that there was still much to learn in mastering this game... which is perhaps the whole point.

But to address the game length issue, let's get a measure of Vanquish's actual game content by cutting out all the cut-scenes, removing all of our deaths and giving it to you straight from start to finish. Is it conceivably possible that you can complete it in under four hours? Here's the entirety of the game presented in just 15 minutes of accelerated gameplay. There's a timer in the top-left to give you an idea of the passage of time as the game was played.

Even in these ultra-optimistic conditions, the timer winds up at five hours, four minutes. Beating that time on your first playthrough of the game by over an hour would require the ability to sail through losing no lives whatsoever, intimately knowing all the strategies required to beat each level right off the bat. In short, unless you're a superhumanly adept player with a phenomenal gift of foresight, the chances of you completing the game in under four hours are extremely remote.

wow, they went full geek on this one.  impressive.  wish they had done this earlier as i might have taken advantage of the deal they had running at kmart.  buy the game and get another one half off plus get $20 credit.  i am sure the good stuff is gone now.

during the end of mission 2, you have up to 4 weapons and switch between them.  during the apache section, you only get to use the guided missiles when the other chopper paints them.  otherwise you switch between the chain gun and the rockets.

unless i have forgotten a section that is.

i think i was too concerned about fighting them until i knew i was ready and stayed the hell out of their region until much later in my game.  by then i could take out super mutants with ease and had a lot of kick ass weapons.
