the biggest change i have seen is this.  when you are sp, you can change inventory and heal during fights.  try that during mp and you'll be seeing red in no time smile  very useful when you have boss fights as you can swap out your weapon loadouts for shields/armor and heal up.  obviously, once you get all 4 slots for weapons, it's not as bad, but the ability to heal has saved my butt a few times.
7002  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NCIS LA on: October 26, 2009, 06:17:37 PM
yeah, that's been my take on it as well.  the cast hasn't built up the chemistry, but i expect they will if they get a few years in.  all in all, the characters are not as likable as the ncis group and i don't get why they picked linda whats-her-name for the lead boss; she's more of a den mother than anything and doesn't hold a candle to lauren holley.

nobody on ncis:90210 is as good a fit as harmon is in their role.
7003  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Call of Duty 4 Impressions on: October 26, 2009, 05:23:10 PM
i played through cod4 on normal, then up to the end of the 2nd pripyat mission in veteran.  damn, that was ungodly irritating and so when i got cod5, i just went through on hardened.  that's difficult enough for me, thankyouverymuch.  not overly difficult like an hour per section in veteran, but definitely harder than on normal.  that IW changed it up for mw2 has me hopeful that a veteran playthrough won't be the controller smash inducing experience the first one was.

if they just made the damage equal for both you and the ai, it would have been much better.  you couldn't take more than two shots, but i'll be damned if they couldn' take half a clip to the face before dying.  and then you got to repeat that with 30 of his clones.
7004  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Borderlands - Reviews, impressions and discussions on: October 26, 2009, 04:51:43 PM
yeah, part of the problem is not finding anybody to play with, it's finding anybody in the same level range.  i look and the closest level character is 5 levels above me, pretty much constantly.  it's not that you can't have fun that way (my first mp night was with glycerine, level 12 vs my level 7) but the area's you end up in.  once you get out of the badlands, you get access to a bunch more quests and it limits you unless you have reached that area yourself.

i really loved the mp saturday night though with doopri.  we both went up more than 10 levels and cleared out a ton of quests.

assault rifles kick ass btw.  nothing like a 100+ damage, highly accurate burst with a good scope that you can easily target their heads with.  i can take out those big ass bruisers that way no problem, and half the time, they get interrupted by the critical shots, so i can take on the next group without retreating.

the metal storm is pretty cool too, especially if you get a good class mod and mg.  100+ rounds at 80 damage and as soon as i kill one, it becomes a freaking minigun.  great crowd control.
7005  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (10/25) on: October 26, 2009, 04:39:40 PM
thankfully, nothing, which gives me enough time to hopefully catch up on the last three games i got.

or failing that, at least it's more time with borderlands.  damn, that's addicting.
7006  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Borderlands - Reviews, impressions and discussions on: October 25, 2009, 06:33:17 PM
i've generally had good use of the turret, but i think i'm going to respec some later on and amp up the damage/rounds it fires.  the elemental damage is pretty awesome when you can get it matched up right.  i had a room full of those elder 'big ass M-F'ers', all level 15 and 16 basically trying to smear my guts onto the cave wall when i dropped a turret down.  it took down two of them at full health and seriously F-ed up a third one, plus gave me enough of a health boost to survive.  it's also the reason i was able to solo the final round of the combat arena against that big ass 19 fire breathing beast, even though i had forgotten to change it's elemental attack, so it actually healed the damn thing.

found a pretty kick ass weapon last night.  a shotgun 'that shoots F-ing rockets!'  it's sadly not that great as a shotgun though as it's aim is wild.  it did lead to a pretty funny moment though when it missed the raider and instead blew up some container behind him, which actually melted the guy .

i've also seen a bit of the over-leveled combat effect when a level 3 attacked.  with my old regular shotgun, the blast took out his torso and sent both his arms flying back about 30 feet from where his legs were.
7007  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Awesomely Bad Movies on: October 23, 2009, 09:36:27 PM
i think we are veering off too far from the 'so bad it's good' region into "pure crappitude", but i digress.  in that latter group, i firmly plant stephen king's dreamcatcher.  this was so bad it tainted the book with it's backflow of crap.  i'm so burned by that garbage i have resolved to never read the book.

The thing that annoys me more than anything else is that "hold-x" is used both for sucking up ammo, which I always want to do, and replacing your current gun with what you're highlighting, which I never want to do.  I'm only level 11 and I've probably switched my gun by accident 20 times or more.

so that's what that was.  that is annoying.  i got this as a rental and no manual, so if it was explained at some point on screen, i missed it.  beyond that, i kind of find the requirement to look directly at the ammo to pick it up somewhat annoying too.  if it picked up anything within reach, i would be much happier.

i was able to get in a bit of gaming this morning and got the soldier to level 4.  the loot is a strong draw, and i'm enjoying the missions and the promise of something new.  the special of the day from the vendor is a pretty odd feature, but i like it.  makes it feel like you might be able to snag a great piece of equipment now and again.

i'll have more time in game this weekend and hope to play the mp a lot.
7010  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Borderlands stuff on: October 22, 2009, 09:31:25 PM
some places have broken street date on it, probably due to the fact that there was a delay to the pc version and some people didn't notice.

but don't go out and bother trying to play it just yet.  apparently the retail copy also only unlocks on the release day as well.

in other news, pirates will be playing this before you will, no doubt.

and even better, the $20 gc is good on both hardened and regualar versions.  this makes the hardened version a lot more affordable.  now i just need to decide if i want to go that route.

steel book + art + cod1.  worth the extra $20.

i really hope the eca codes get going again soon.  that would make up the difference that amazon wants for tax + shipping

well, i got hit with the level 25 freeze bug, pretty much as soon as the last line nate says about it all being clear.  lucky me.

at least it autosaves.  i hadn't saved since midway through level 22.  i also found that the assault shotgun does wonders against all enemies.  man, that just tears them apart.  pretty much one shot on normals and two or three on the body armored guys.

Run, Ronnie, Run!  a movie disowned by both it's writers.  so bad they didn't even want to be paid for it.

Quote
Ronnie Dobbs, (David Cross) a redneck petty criminal whose scams were caught on tape by a Cops-like television show called Fuzz, is noticed by failing infomercial personality/inventor Terry Twillstein (Bob Odenkirk), who sees Dobbs's popularity with lowbrow viewers. He promotes the idea to television executives for a show, "Ronnie Dobbs Gets Arrested" in which he is arrested in a different city each week. The show becomes phenomenally successful, making Dobbs rich and famous and changing his life dramatically.

if you remember the sordid tale of a former citizen of one Enumclaw WA, known after death as 'he-who-sleeps-with-horses', you might wonder, did they ever make it against the law to have sex with horses?  that would be a yes, although it didn't stop other men so interested from finding greener pastures.

this one in particular, adding new meaning to the phrase "hiking the appalachian trail" moved to a new state to get his wild oats sown.  now he's being charged with animal cruelty, which is at least better than the trespassing charge he picked up the first time.

There’s nothin’ in life that’s worth doin’, if it can’t be done with a horse…

well, i have to wonder what 'dynamic situations' could entail other than the random battles, which this does seem to have.  tbh, i'd rather have a host of designed missions now and again, or you end with 20 variations on the same 'kill x of y' quests, which also seems to be the case here.

i think the idea of random generation = gaming nirvana doesn't necessarily hold up any more.

I'm loving the game, but as someone who didn't love the combat in the first one, I'm finding the fights getting a little too much as we near the end.  I've had to restart several multiple times and was growing frustrated a few times.

I was in the same boat, I was disappointed at how they basically rammed combat down your throat the last third of the game. The environment/climbing puzzles grew frustrating towards the end as well.

if you take out the combat and the environmental platforming, what's left to do?   Tongue

I'm not surprised about CoD being the top shooter in the decades top 10 - it's multiplatform and Halo isn't. I'm actually surprised any Halo game made the list, but Halo 2 didn't have much competition back in 2004. I suspect no Madden game making the list after Madden 08 (2007) is a result of the decline of the PS2 as a platform of choice for sports gamers.

LOL about Wiiplay - it's really an example of Nintendo's savvy at marketing peripherals. I'm always amazed that MS and Sony haven't attempted a similar ploy.

yeah, but how do you pack in a game with the chatpad?

btw, they did do this with the camera, although with notable niche games.

yeah, so far it does seem to be a co-op over sp focused game.

for any others wondering, here are the relevant parts:

Quote
single-player in Borderlands is entirely valid, and fun. But the sense remains that there's something missing. This is filled when you start playing co-op, because one of the most obvious mechanisms in the game suddenly makes sense.

Quote
Co-op is arguably how Borderlands is meant to be played. While the quests in the single-player are adequate to the task of keeping you occupied and entertained, the ludicrous ramping of enemy numbers and power when friends join makes the experience far, far more chaotic, and therefore more entertaining.

most importantly, the four classes seem to be pretty much able to survive the higher levels with their specials, although the bird is somewhat less effective at higher levels.

Say it ain't so, I'm probably going to be doing a lot of SP not co-op.

It's the same game in either mode.  More players just means more/tougher enemies to shoot.  Nothing more.

Right, but plenty of boring games have been made more amusing when played co-op.  Mario Party and Smash Bros. are perfect examples.

exactly.  you shouldn't need the presence of other people to make a game fun.  saints row 2 for example was still awesome in sp.  i'm hoping for some more fleshed out impressions before i buy this.

almost finished it last night, up to a section in level 22 where you have a couple of towers and snipers to take out.

i really enjoyed the battle back in the last town and the level after that.  such a cinematic experience (yeah, overused phrase, but what else would you use?).

i haven't even noticed, but there are stealth bonus items?  or do you mean the stuff you pick off of the bodies when you get them?

i really liked the opening to the last section where you get access to the only ranged silent weapon.  made for a nice head start on the battle.

that comic reminds me of the hl2 comic 'Concerned' and how he wrote the combine soldier's moments.

a lot of this depends on two things.  one, whether i even get the game (hopefully via gamefly) and two, whether i can play this primarily mp.

if i play solo, i'll probably stick with the soldier.  mp, either tank for something new, or the sniper (although i expect that to be a popular class)

well, i guess that makes sense JD.  if you are supposed to be this badass when you are level 20 going to the newbie zones, then it means you aren't going to take on those 5 levels above you.

7036  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: what has been your worse game this gen? on: October 19, 2009, 04:39:41 PM
i have to agree with you there kronovan.  i've enjoyed many of this gen's (and mine) most disappointing games, but that's a subjective descriptor.  if i am disappointed with how a game turns out, then it's because i had such high hopes for it going in.

godfather 2 was disappointing initially, then i enjoyed it a little more after i accepted what it was doing differently from the first one.

mass effect was disappointing because i really loved the idea of it all.  a big epic space rpg with exploration, great graphics and a great story.

mercenaries 2 was disappointing because it didn't live up to the original in terms of fun.

but worst game?  no.
